DRAMA REVIEW | You Are Desire (2023)
From the very start I was very impressed with this drama. The first episode felt grounded in reality and presented all the main characters as young adults behaving like such but also with a level of maturity that felt respectful. Sometimes youth dramas don't know how to balance the growing pains, friendship and romance but You Are Desire does it perfectly.
Xia Feng Yan created a story with solid development based on actual growing from well rounded characters that act and react in ways that feel natural. I am amazed this is her first project and I will keep an eye on her because she has a bright future.
Deng Ke (My Huckelberry Friends) also started in the industry as a screenwriter before transitioning into directing, so it was a perfect fold for Xia's story. He understood the assignment and complemented the script with beautiful cinematography, camera movements and choice of cast.
This drama could have died in the hands of a lesser cast but Zhou Yiran and Zhuang Dafei carried the drama flawlessly. Most of the story centers around them and how they interact with others when loneliness has been a part of their young lives for a long time. The supporting cast were also at their best, each with their own lives and struggles which made them well rounded individuals and not an artifact to push the leads's story.
All of these elements created a beautiful group of people dealing with different experiences. A slice of life drama where we understand the world is not always fair and parents make mistakes; where people need to learn to grieve in a healthy way. That families can all look very different from each other and that's okay as long there's love. That you don't always pass the university exam and your workplace might suck. A world where you fall in love and support one another as you grow together with a clear understanding of each other. That life can be sweeter when you are surrounded of good people who truly appreciate you.
Overall, You Are Desire it's a wonderful story that enjoyed from the very first episode to the last one. Criminally underrated, for sure, as I don't understand how more people are not talking about what is probably one of 2023's best cdramas.

I've really enjoyed the cast of Keep Running this season. I enjoyed the past casts too, but I think this season just somehow appeals most to me in terms of cast dynamics.
Li Chen, Zheng Kai, and Angelababy are, of course, perfect as always. I cannot imagine the show without them, and I think all 3 were the best choices to retain from the original cast. While they're competitive, I think the three also set a great tone for keeping things playful and also aren't shy to show concern or care for other members and guests. They're really a trio of strength, speed, and luck/charm.
Sha Yi has always been an amazing addition ever since his first appearance back in season 8. He's the perfect mix of teasing and caring. I love his old man jokes, and how he and Chen go back and forth about who is going to be the one to tease "the kids" and who is going to be the one to try to defend them.
Bai Lu - I honestly just love her. I love when she gets amused by something and laughs so hard. I love how she throws herself into things. (I really love when she and Angelababy have their little alliances or joke around with inside jokes, and I need more of them being on the same team together)
Zhou Shen I think brings one of the most unique "personalities" out of all the men Keep Running has had. I love his willingness to try things even when he knows it's unlikely he can do them. I love how he's always quietly caring for people in the background and how his love for singing sometimes just breaks out and we're all treated to spontaneous performances.
Fan ChengCheng surprised me with how good of a fit he became. I was interested to see where he would fit in, and I love what he has brought. He's so devious but also so unlucky. He's really a great addition to variety. I hope he continues to play up being the devious youngest member. In the last episode when he and Angelababy "exploded" together against the staff, it was so hilarious. They played off each other so well.
Every single pairing works so well. I'm excited no matter how the teams are divided because everyone has such great chemistry. I honestly hope to see more of this cast in the future seasons, and I'd love for them to last for several more seasons and specials.
(Also, if Dylan Wang were to somehow join as a permanent member, I'd love to see how the cast handled his and Adam's combined chaos on a regular basis. )

The Romance of Hua Rong season1-2 9
Story: 10
Acting: 10
Chemistry: 10 🔥
Comparable to: ?
This is going to be a total shameless guilty pleasure drama for me . The storyline is a bit far fetche sometimes, it has the rinse and repeat storyline effect too and the main female lead can get annoying sometimes. But, and keyword here as being but, what made me want to keep watching and have the total giggles with the googlie eyes is the male lead, Yuan Hao, who’s beyond handsome plus charming, and sexy. He just nails his role in this and instantly makes up for the flaws in the show. (The costumes are by far my favorite in this) His character growth is probably my favorite in a long time. He’s just *sigh* a great character and the actor did him soooooo well. Like I mentioned above even though the female lead may have her faults she still has some great moments too especially in season 2, the chemistry is amazing between both of them. This is a cute fluffy pirate’y adventure romance. I throughly enjoyed this one immensely.

a neatly tied package is left with a signed handwritten note, somewhere easy for the cat to find but out of sight from other prying eyes, a gift to take home.
I heard others speak of today. it is an acceptable time to return the gesture from the month prior. you may view this offering as such. though I am unaware of your tastes, nor your host, these are items I have collected as thanks. do as you wish with them.
once unwrapped, the contents revealed consists of a single toy—one of those foam balls with a couple of feathers attached, a box containing assorted edibles for S-0, and a small bag filled with cookies for Wang Yi. if these aren't sufficient, S-0 can always make suggestions next time they meet.
S-0's paws are enough to smooth out the note and read it for himself, but he can't do much about a sealed box. Luckily, he has a lackey to boss around for these things.
【Wang Yi!】
' What is it now...oh huh, a delivery? '
The paws push the note at him first, and Wang Yi's eyes widen as he reads the contents for himself. His expression is pensive at first, but turns positively gleeful when they finally get the box inside and open it up on the kitchen counter. The System is already wiggling its butt into the box to better grab the feathered ball when Wang Yi laughs out loud.
' Hahaha, what the hell, Sao Ling? '
' Did you pick up a human girlfriend this time? '
The butt wiggling stops as S-0 turns on his back, front paws hugging the new toy to his chest. 【My Auxiliary User is much more skilled and superior than any simple human love interest.】
' What's that supposed to mean? '
【Nothing you need to worry about. But prepare more anchovy snacks for me next time.】
' Huh–wait a sec, have you been sharing them with her? '
A fluffy tail bats Wang Yi in the face. 【This is a chance to prove your prowess too, Host. I can't have you embarrassing me in front of the other NPCs.】
' Who the heck— '
【Go!】
Wang Yi grabs his bag of cookies before S-0 can scratch him and grumbles, ' You're such a spoiled cat. Do you want to keep the box? '
【Of course. And open my box of snacks too.】
' You're not getting any before dinner. '
【Mreow!】
' I said no—argh, gimme back my cookies, dammit! '

okay now that I'm reading Heavenly Tyrant I would also like to cast
Wang Yibo as Qin Zheng
I think he could pull off the dichotomy of "cold, aggressive, revolutionary leader" and "absolutely annoying loverboy" very well lol
Zhou Dong Yu as Qieluo
???? My girl can be fierce we do not have to question this. But, like Qieluo, she can also be well-rounded and show unexpected emotions in a way that connects with people. Literally who else could play Qieluo?
Qi Xia Xia as Wan'er
Our headstrong revolutionary! She's flirts while aggressively debating about laborism. It'd be a good challenge for this actress. Usually her fierceness is presented through violent and powerful characters, but Wan'er would require her channeling this energy in a new way. Let's broaden her range!
Yang Zhi as Taiping
If anyone can pull off both a cheeky and shell-shocked character, its Yang Zhi. I have no doubt she'd also do quite well at the "club" with "jello shots" whatever that is. Yang Zhi also has this intriguing awkwardness about her characters, and while Taiping doesn't come across this way in the book, I also think it would look good on her on screen.
Xu Kai as Di Renji
Hear me out! Xu Kai can give off the thoughtful and critical mind very easily in his performance. I think it would basically ooze off of him without even trying too hard. He's the stoic revolutionary who secretly steals the audience's heart without needing enough screentime to do it
Inspired by this post, I wanted to fancast Iron Widow! I really liked these picks, especially Nini who would do a great job as Wu Zetian, but didn't want to just copy and paste.
Li Meng as Wu Zetian
She was a wonderfully cruel and charismatic villain in The Double and I would love to see her rage and passion in Wu Zetian's character.
Yu Shi as Li Shimin
Ok listen I think he's handsome, but also he could do it.
Tan Jian Ci as Gao Yizhi
For our wealthy scholar. His 2023 and 2024 characters were polar opposites characterization wise, and I'd love to see him continue to challenge himself with a unique character like Yizhi.

2023-2024 cdramas year in review
i'm borrowing this idea from thai bl tumblr, but with less fun categories because i'm tired. i'm including shows from this year and last year since i mainly watched a mixture of the two in 2024.
tagging whoever wants to do it!
overall favorite show (2024): fangs of fortune it's gorgeous, i love the characters, and it's got one of the most shippable poly casts i've seen in basically ever.
overall favorite show (2023): mysterious lotus casebook i actually did watch this one last year and i liked it, but it wasn't until i rewatched it again in 2024 that i lost my mind over it.
favorite character: di feisheng from mysterious lotus casebook my love my darling my heart. i adore him with every fiber of my being. i honestly never really noticed xiao shunyao too much before this but he's sure got my attention now.
favorite character runner up: pei sijing from fangs of fortune sorry, you can't give me a badass kuudere archer and expect me to NOT be absolutely nuts about her. cheng xiao has also improved SO much from her early days acting and i think it's super neat that they incorporated her dancing background into her fight scenes.
favorite ship: dihua from mysterious lotus casebook see above about losing my mind. it's got everything i love in a ship: history, tension, longing, being totally obsessed with one another. i've written so much this year and most of it is for them.
favorite ship runner up: jingxiao from fangs of fortune GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS i love them and they love each other. i love how flirty wx is with psj and how sincere and open psj is with wx.
favorite canon ship: song mo/dou zhao in blossom this is still airing so i hope they don't fuck it up, but it's such a refreshing dynamic. they're really partners, and he's so gone for her.
favorite canon ship runner up: gu jiusi/li yuru in destined i'm not really a fan of straight romance dramas but the strongest arc of this show is undoubtedly the first one, where they unwillingly get married and slowly fall in love. bjt is particularly charming in this role and song yi is lovely per usual.
favorite fl: dou zhao in blossom i love that she's careful and meticulous but not omnipotent. she's working at changing what she can but she's not a miracle worker. she feels warm and human and fallible in the best way. also mzy is gorgeous and i love her, fuck the haters.
favorite fl runner up: xue fangfei in the double she's batshit overpowered and it's still contrived in some instances but wu jinyan sells it enough that i just eat it up hahah.
favorite ml: li lianhua in mysterious lotus casebook his burnt out gifted kid ass is captivating. he has so many complex layers; it's a role that really gives cheng yi a chance to stretch his muscles and i think he did a great job.
favorite ml runner up: pu yiyong in oh no! here comes trouble he's a dumbass delinquent with a hereditary power to see spirits and release them, what's not to love.
favorite female supporting role: yang ying in a journey to love one of the best character arcs i've seen in a long, long time. i love her journey and where she ends up and i hope she gets everything she ever wants. iconic role for helan dou imo.
favorite female supporting role runner up: feng baobao in am nobody she doesn't understand human interaction and she loves knives and is good at them. she was made for me.
favorite male supporting role: yu shishan in journey to love breakout role for fang yilun, suave playboy with a heart of gold, faithful brother in arms. i adore him.
favorite male supporting role runner up: wang ye in i am nobody lazy, lowkey, and the best in the world. a good look for hmh also.
favorite antagonist: shen yurong from the double what a thoroughly unhinged man. i particularly loved the middle section of the show and the back and forth between him and xff. i wanted him to take a different path, but he couldn't.
favorite antagonist runner up: li lun from fangs of fortune oh my beautiful, bitter, lovelorn tree demon. he's like catnip for me.
favorite antagonist honorable mention: gong shangjue from my journey to you so intense, so brooding, so murderous.
bonus 2023 thai show section
favorite overall show: moonlight chicken i just really loved this show. i like both gemfourth and earthmix and while i did not enjoy the bit of firstkhao pandering at the end, i thought it was a generally thoughtful exploration of human foibles.
favorite cast: my school president they're adorable and i love them. this is overall such a fun, feel good show with great music. tinngun are wonderful and so are the secondary couples. special shoutout to babygirl por's outfits.
most ridiculous sex scene: bed friend you know the one.
biggest disappointment: only friends i still haven't finished it. i'm just not invested in anything or anyone. i think part of it is that i don't really love the cast, out side of neo and mark. i do like first and khao but not really together, sadly.

Petty, I respect you.
I do.
However.
DONT BE QUITE ABOUT THE COLOURS IN ON1Y 1 BECAUSE I WILL READ A FULL THESIS ON IT, 20 PAGES!!!! 50 PAGES!!!!
PLEASEEEE Give
It
To
Meeeeeeeee 🥹
Anon,
You've opened a floodgate.
Because I always notice the colors, but just because I see colors doesn't mean I know why they are significant. Even if I see there is a pattern, it doesn't mean I understand its importance. And I don't think y'all should be subject to me screaming about Jiang Tian's paper bookmarks being yellow and pink in a book of (love?) poems where he has highlighted that "a girl's shyness is like a tender cherry under the sunlight" and "16- and 17-year-olds are like fruits in the morning sun, sparkling."
Sheng Wang asks who this is about, but we know who this is about. The colors mean things.
And more importantly, I actually didn't write weekly or episodic posts about shows until 2022. I used to wait until a show was over to write about the colors or background noise, and, mostly, I only did it when people would ask me about it. Big Dragon was the first show that I felt compelled to write weekly about the colors and background noise because it was so amazing, so 2024 is still an odd space for me to be in sometimes because as much as I love colors, I'm ALWAYS surprised how much y'all want to know about them . . . weekly . . . per episode . . . for all the shows.
I write for myself, but sometimes I think y'all don't need to witness me losing my shit every week for sixteen weeks over obviously color-coded characters in The Loyal Pin.
And sometimes I think y'all don't want to witness me losing my shit over colors that I can't completely understand like the grays in 4 Minutes.
And then other times I think y'all shouldn't have to witness me losing my shit over colors that I'm not sure are colors until I've watched enough episodes to feel sure that the colors are, in fact, coloring; then, the series, The Trainee, actually tells me the colors were coloring the entire time like I thought.
And that's why I try to be quiet about shows because I'm figuring them out in my head, or I'm waiting for enough information to feel confident about them, and I don't want to hog up the tag with my ramblings. I need to sit in it a bit to figure out what the colors mean.
Kiseki: Dear to Me was the perfect example. I didn't mention anything about colors until prompted by others because it took me until the third episode to feel certain that Chen Yi and Ai Di matched colors, then it took me close to the end of the series to realize all the cameo couples ALSO matched colors.
It took me until the end of My Love Mix-Up to realize Aoki's color had evolved.
It took me two seasons (and a movie) to feel secure that Kiyoi was a Heavenly Human in My Beautiful Man.
And it took me until midway through Semantic Error to figure out why the red disappeared.
That's how The On1y One is for me. I knew yellow/orange and blue would play some part in the story based on the posters, but I wasn't sure how until I started seeing more visuals appear.
Because even though I saw a yellow container of food for Sheng Wang in the first episode,
I didn't realize he mostly ate color-coded food until episode four.
It's such a tiny detail, so I could have easily missed it, but because I know that he is a picky eater, I feel like it's not simply a coincidence, and I quickly noticed it in the eighth episode.
But I needed to collect more images before I could state that. I needed to let the story develop before I realized it. I needed to settle into it. And that's why I wrote my halfway point post after a few people asked if I noticed.
Because I know I seem like a magician who shouts a lot, but I'm not. Sometimes, I have to be patient and let the colors sneak up on me while I'm simply enjoying the moment, like Sheng Wang's orange alarm clock nestled into the corner of his bed while he falls asleep on his light yellow pillow in his light yellow shirt.
I know not all visuals can be a literal bright yellow sign hanging from the color-coded boy's room, ya know?
I'm not Jenny who cannot grasp that she keeps taking food and drinks meant for Benny even when he realized if she could figure out the mug was about gay rights without realizing he was gay then someone smarter will along and piece the dots together . . .
Because like, girl, he's gay.
But it does take me time to collect images and get my thoughts in order, so until then, I'm going to be quiet.
Or as quiet as a loud ass like me can be.
#the on1y one#I won't move past that mug#like girl . . .#piece the dots together#the colors mean things#color coded boys in love#I'm trying to be quiet#I need to collect more images#I need to organize my thoughts#I need to live in the mess for a bit
