Day27-28 Explore Rescue Protect
Honestly, I wasn’t too proud with this one. I don’t really like how this was turned out but… I’m out of ideas so… eat it up. Why is Barnacles protecting Bianca? You guys all know how walrus is always a jerk to Captain Barnacles in the Walrus pups episode? Yeah. Why is Peso and Pinto’s feather gray and not white and black? They haven’t grow their adult feathers yet. The feather came in after they turn 12 so yeah. Think of puberty.
Headcanon: Peso, Kwazii, and Barnacles have been exploring, rescuing, and protecting ever since they were little.

Here's a moment no one seems to mention about Barnacles: Walrus Pups episode when the pup says that he wants someone to hold his flipper cause he's scared and Barnacles, when trying to keep two icebergs from crashing into them, without hesitation holds out his paw so the pup can be comforted.
YES yes you are so right, it's adorable :3
plus: that whole scene in general screams "claustrophobia", and considering Barnacles' fear stems from getting trapped.... in ice.... for a long time.... while he was out with younger cub scouts........
all I'm saying is it's 100% possible he offered to hold the pup's flipper so quickly because he was scared too. </3
and he probably wished someone held his paw back then, too.
#i love him and kwazii in that whole ep/scene#the way kwazii assures him that he'll find him as fast as he can.#the way barnacles mentions to kwazii that they're ''running out of room!'' and kwazii says ''we're almost there! hold on captain!''#the way barnacles is so happy to see kwazii#the way they were hanging out in the front of the gup together after the rescue and barnacles was smiling#aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa#the episode came out long before sac actun but....... i feel like they knew. even then.#cries and sobs /pos#octonauts#ask#captain barnacles

why is your favorite character Barnacles? and do you relate to him in any way?
Oh, there are various reasons why he's my favorite character! And in some ways, I do relate to him! (Thanks for the ask btw!) Spoilers ahead! As well as some mentions of drowning, being stung by a jellyfish, and similar themes! So, a lot of the reason he is my favorite character would be his personality. He's clearly strict, to some extent, and protective. He's exceptionally detail-oriented and clearly hates when things seem out of place (or when things go out of his control). He has a preference for how things are done. That's evident in many ways throughout the cartoon itself (scenarios of the other Octonauts sounding the alert, something slightly inconveniencing his plans, or when Kwazzi goes on without order, he is clearly taken back and has to regain his thought process). Many instances show how protective he is with his crew as well (he has been stung by a jellyfish, swallowed by a whale shark, tossed into the ocean from considerably high, nearly drowned, nearly crashed, and various other items)!
Not to mention how he takes pride in his strength! He is very willed and takes matters into his own hands if necessary. It's typical for him to take conflict on with hands-on force (and not to mention that he actively works to maintain the strength he has). Despite being the most muscular member of the crew, he only teases with the knowledge (unless, of course, it's a dire situation). His mental strength is also quite interesting to see put into play throughout the show. Throughout the episodes, it's rather apparent that he has experienced some rather traumatic conditions but never once let the circumstances downhearten him. I feel his repression (of trauma) prevents the crew from worrying about him because they all look up to him; they rely on him. When you think about it, Kwazzi was the only one that knew Barnacles had claustrophobia (that we know of). He keeps most of his personal fears and his early life private. Seeing him come forward and open up to Peso (Caves of Sac Actun) was such an intriguing way to see a build of the character. He was opening up more (which he deserves) and showing that even as captain, he has a more sensitive side.
The fatherly act that he has is another reason he has my favorite character. He treats each member as more than a crew but a family, and it's clear that he's completely lost without them. His protective behaviors always come through most when one of his crewmates is in trouble. He is always quick to take a sting for any one of the people he loves (he even punched a block of ice mid-air to stop it from crushing three walrus pups and his relatives). I believe that any word to describe his paternal instinct could never be enough. He just has it engraved in his mind that HE is the one that is to protect everyone. He will not stop for anything. He most certainly knows that he's seen as a father figure. Ex (I couldn't find the clip): Sea creature @ Peso: "Is he your mom?" Barnacles: "Um, no, but I look after him!"
He's incredibly fatherly, constantly pushing the team to do what they want, blaming himself if something goes wrong. The best example would be "The Jellyfish Bloom," season 1, Ep. 34. He blames himself for letting Shellington stay out overnight, even though he had no control over what nature was bound to do. He just feels it's his fault if they get hurt. He ends up hurting himself while blocking the entrance to the Octopod, ensuring that neither the crew nor the jellyfish is harmed (and is clearly upset for most of the episode because he is rendered, mainly, immobile).
(This is a clip right before he is stung.)
I also love the fact that he is very proud of the fact that he was a Polar Scout. Most people would be ashamed that they were a scout, but he flaunts it as a tremendous achievement. It is fascinating to see from a leading character (though I'd like to see more of his past)!
And his past is another reason he's a favorite. What we know of his past is the stories about the Polar Scouts he shared, but nothing beyond that. His story, and the theories to go with it, are exceedingly intriguing aspects of his character. It makes anyone want to know more about him. Though there are hints to who he was (the wheel from the M.V. Manitoba, the sextant, and the anchor. As well as the Octopod that was before the current one). It makes me want to learn more about his character (even if I have theories).
- I relate to him because I am protective of those I love (willing to jump in front of anything for them)! I am a very parental friend, it's true! There are a couple of his aspects that I relate to.

A new episode aired in Canada, so I gotta post some new Marshall pics!
Season 8′s “Pups Save a Lonesome Walrus / Pups Save the Hummy Gummies”!
Marshall got called in during both segments today, so you know I certainly liked that! And his ability to speak/understand other animals popped up again, which was also pretty cool. :)

S1 E9 Review: Pups Get a Rubble / Pups Save A Walrus
S1 E9 Review: Pups Get a Rubble / Pups Save A Walrus
Pups Get A Rubble
This episode is mostly an extended flashback from Ryder about how they added Rubble to the team which is introduced while Rubble is replacing one of the steps on City Hall. This begs the question of whether the city had ANY construction services before Rubble joined the PAW Patrol.
The flashback begins with Ryder playing soccer with Marshall and Chase, when the ball is…

Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo (second format) episode 7-9
Episode 7(a): Waxworld
Monster: Owner of Waxworld, the “Waxmaster”
Interests: Faux-gang is in England, Shaggy and Scooby are eating some fish n’ chips, but Scrappy eats Shaggy’s. Also they don’t pay for it as Shaggy’s money goes rolling away and they give chase, the vendor doesn’t care. Wax museum, so a number of passed monsters used. Waxmaster is dressed like a vampire, unsure if he is a vampire? He wants to make the faux-gang wax figures and hasn’t done any vampire stuff. Just likes to dress up I guess. Wax Master ends up in the tub of hot wax, Scrappy dips him in again “for good measure”. Scrappy then makes a wax candle of Scooby...
Episode 7(b): Scooby in Wonderland
Monster: Dreams
Interests: There is a bed in the back of the Mystery Machine, but only room enough for the dogs. Shaggy is reading them a bedtime story, guess which one. Scooby ends up dreaming the story, as Alice. Scrappy is the rabbit. “Bunny power” Shaggy is here as normal, and both seem to know each other as who they are and Scrappy. After falling down the rabbit hole, Scooby loses his Alice hair. Scooby snack with a “EAT THESE STUPID” sign, much meaner. Scrappy recognizes Shaggy and Scooby but continues to play the role.
Episode 7(c): Scrappy's Birthday
Monster: New-born Scrappy? An orderly??
Interests: Shaggy goes to eat a chicken leg, but Scooby steals it. Shaggy reminisces about Scrappy’s birth. Scooby’s sister Ruby-Doo ... who speaks perfect english. “PLEASE DON’T LITTER” sign in the hospital/vet. Only one pup.. Scrappy fights the doctor as soon as he is born. After being beaten to the ground, doctor comments on him being a scrappy tyke, causing Ruby to name him Scrappy. Scrappy runs off in the hospital by himself. Ruby’s room is 177. Scrappy’s cake has 3 candles, question is he 3 years old? He looks the same as the day he was born.
Episode 8(a): South Seas Scare
Monster: Lava Monster
Interests: Nice opening minute of racism. Scooby and Shaggy run the classic dress up and interact with the monster distraction play, but Scrappy interrupts right at the end. Twice. Lava Monster throws food at Shaggy and Scooby and they eat it, mainly whole chickens and ham.
Episode 8(b): Scooby's Swiss Miss
Monster: Whoever the character designer was. Toxic relationships.
Interests: Despite being cold and in the mountains, faux-gang is not wearing winter cloths. ... SUPER DISURBING HUMANOID POODLE! Like holy shit..She is on two legs, wearing high heels or at least standing like it, has a dress, and super thin waist. Like she looks more like just a deformed human with an unfortunate haircut then dog? But she flirts with Scooby and is clearly meant to be a dog. There is a bulldog that claims the “poodle” is his girl and thus anger at Scooby for her flirting. This bulldog looks like a normal dog... well normal dog for this universe. “Poodle” does seem to be in relationship with bulldog. Faux-gang ski without poles?? Is that a thing? Look I know nothing of winter sports. OH GOSH THAT SHOT OF THE FAKE POODLE WAS WORSE! Oh gosh this shot of Scrappy is awful too. “Poodle” ends up a tree.. from a bear that can’t climb it, bulldog tries to help, but ends up backing down from bear, Scooby accidentally saves her. “Poodle” wants to marry Scooby, Scrappy runs off and brings back the bulldog in bandaged up and dressed like a groom, the “poodle” response with, “Oh well, a tleast he can’t run away”. Gross.
Episode 8(c): Alaskan King Coward
Monster: Walrus-Cat-Lizard creature?
Interests: Sled dogs. New winter outfits. They are here to dig gold. Santa??? Scrappy-trap makes a return. Scooby and Shaggy actually notice the trap and avoid it... well they avoided the trigger for it, but still get hit with it along with the monster. (And the random Santa appearance was not really mentioned, just there. Episode seems to have aired on Dec 27th)
Episode 9(a): Eu Tu, Scoob?
Monster: Time Mages? Random rifts in time? Blood Sports? A Lion? A Gladiator? The Emperor of Rome?
Interests: Faux-gang stop at a .. roadside pizza stand? Scrappy comes back with a Scrappy special, pepperoni, anchovies, onions, chocolate sauce, and garlic. Also whipped cream which seems to be a deal breaker for Shaggy and Scooby. Faux-gang somehow end up back in time to ancient Rome in the coliseum. Hotus Dogus. Played off as a hallucination from the pizza.
Episode 9(b): Soggy Bog Scooby
Monster: Swamp Monster
Interests: Fishing outfits. End up on a random boat “Lets go see if we can find some food”. “Maybe we can find some food in here” -Shaggy, pointing at a door that says Galley. They only find a can of cream broccoli, Scooby is not a fan. Scooby looks for a can opener, despite having open cans many a times before.. okay it was for a gag with the monster.
Episode 9(c): Scooby Gumbo
Monster: Faux-gang’s disrespect for a restaurant not wanting to get shut down for health violations.
Interests: Dogs? Where? Episode is just faux-gang trying to trick a chief who doesn’t want to serve dogs. Scrappy ends up as a pastry chief for the restaurant.

Walruses fell to deaths because they were chased by polar bears
Walruses seen falling to their deaths as they scaled high cliffs to escape climate change could have died because they were being chased by polar bears, a zoologist has claimed.
Footage from Sir David Attenborough’s Netflix documentary Our Planet showed walruses plunging off 250ft high cliffs in northeast Russia.
The animals were said to be making the dangerous climb to higher ground to escape receding sea ice due to warming seas.
Hundreds of walruses became confused by a combination of shrinking ice cover and their own poor eyesight, causing them to scale cliffs and often plummet to their deaths when they attempt to return to sea, the show stated.
In the disturbing clip, walruses could be seen perched precariously on the edge of the rocky cliffs, unaware of just how high up they were.
It’s not the first time a David Attenborough-narrated programme has been faced accusations of faking dramatic wildlife footage.
In 2011 Frozen Planet admitted after the show aired that filmmakers used footage of cubs taken at a zoo using fake snow in the Netherlands and spliced it with polar bear clips from the wild.
As zoologist said the walruses were plummeting to their deaths after being chased by polar bears in northeast Russia
Polar bears were said to have chased the walruses off the cliff, but this claim was disputed by the filmmakers who stood by the footage
Sir David Attenborough at the Our Planet global premiere at the Natural History Museum on April last Thursday
Then the BBC’s Blue Planet 2 series in 2017 saw creators defend the use of studio shots taken in laboratories as it featured images of coral bleaching that could only be filmed with lights and specialised cameras.
The Blue Planet team also recreated a rock pool on board a ship to film up-close zebra mantis shrimp and the long teeth of the fangtooth fish.
In the recent Our Planet episode of the Frozen Worlds series, Attenborough says that all the walruses know is that they need to join the others and find food.
But a leading zoologist has accused filmmakers of using ‘tragedy porn’ and ’emotional manipulation’ to gain viewers.
Susan Crockford, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada, claims the animals were more likely to have been driven over the cliffs after being chased by polar bears.
She cited a famous incident in 2017 near where the Netflix series was filmed, where 20 polar bears chased walruses over to top of cliffs at Kozhevnikova Cape, Ryrkaypiy, in eastern Russia, according to the Siberian Times.
Describing the footage as ‘contrived nonsense’, Dr Crockford told the Telegraph: ‘This powerful story is fiction and emotional manipulation at its worst.
‘The walruses shown in this Netflix film were almost certainly driven over the cliff by polar bears during a well-publicised incident in 2017, not because they were confused by a combination of shrinking ice cover and their own poor eyesight.
Walruses were seen in the Netflix documentary Our Planet falling 250ft. The show claimed this was due to receding ice
The walruses could be seen falling from the high cliffs in the shocking footage. What caused the animals to fall has been disputed by a zoologist
A shocking segment of Netflix’s Our Planet showed the gruesome fate of walruses as they tumbled down the high cliffs
‘Even if the footage shown by Attenborough was not the 2017 incident in Ryrkaypiy, we know that walruses reach the top of cliffs in some locations and might fall if startled by polar bears, people or aircraft overhead, not because they are confused by shrinking sea ice cover.
‘The bears were then able to feed off the many carcasses after the survivors took to the water.’
Sophie Lanfear, director of the Frozen Worlds series that features the Our Planet episode, defended the footage, saying two crew members watched the animals fall and claimed they were not being chased by polar bears.
She said: ‘We filmed Pacific walrus falling from high cliffs. They were not being driven off the cliffs by the polar bears and we know this because we had two team members watching the cliffs from afar who could see the polar bears and were in radio communications with us to warn us about any bears approaching the crew closer to the walrus and the cliffs.
‘Once the walrus had rested at the top for a few days they wanted to return to sea when all the others below started to leave.
‘We would watch them for hours teetering back and forth on the edge before finally, falling off.
‘Fundamentally, the reason walrus used this haul out location is because of a lack of sea ice in the region, meaning they are coming ashore more frequently than they did in the past.
Susan Crockford, of the University of Victoria in British Columbia, claims the wakruses were more likely to have been driven over the cliffs after being chased by polar bears
Frozen Planet with David Attenborough next to a polar bear in 2011. Filmmakers admitted after the show aired that some scenes were shot in a Dutch zoo and included fake snow
Shots of a polar bear den, showing a mother tending to her cubs was actually shot in a zoo in the Netherlands and not the wild
‘Especially mothers with their pups. And at this particular site, once the beach below the cliffs was full, they spread out and up the cliffs and were unable to find their way safely down, with tragic consequences.’
During the scene in Our Planet, Sir David said: ‘A walrus’ eyesight out of water is poor.
‘But they can sense the others down below. As they get hungry, they need to return to the sea.
‘In their desperation to do so, hundreds fall from heights they should never have scaled.’
Previous David Attenborough-narrated shows accused of faking wildlife footage
Preparing for the new arrivals: The fake nest being built in a Dutch zoo, ahead of the birth of the polar bear cubs
Dramatic footage of a polar bear tending to her newborn cubs in the 2011 BBC show Frozen Planet was actually filmed in a Dutch zoo using fake snow.
The tiny bears were shown mewling at their mother and nuzzling her for milk.
Eight million viewers were led to believe the scene had been captured by BBC cameramen inside an underground cave in the brutal sub-zero temperatures of the Arctic wilderness.
But the footage which was interspersed with real shots of the Arctic, was in fact filmed in a den made of plaster and wood in a wildlife enclosure.
At the time Sir David defended the methods used by Frozen Planet, saying: ‘If you had tried to put a camera in the wild in a polar bear den, she would either have killed the cub or the cameraman.’
The six years later, Blue Planet II also had to defend its use of studio footage filmed in laboratories.
Unlike in Frozen Planet, the Blue Planet team would not tell viewers which scenes were filmed in a studio.
The BBC’s Natural History Unit was also criticised for filming footage in zoos rather than in the natural world.
Walruses are among the top Arctic species feeling the effects of climate change as they rely heavily on sea ice to rest between hunts.
As the ice shrinks, more and more are coming onto shore, according to the WWF.
In addition to unfamiliar and dangerous terrain, ‘on land, they’re highly susceptible to disturbance from humans, aircraft or predators such as polar bears, which can spook them and cause crushing stampedes,’ according to the WWF.
In the disturbing footage walruses could be seen perched precariously on the edge of the rocky cliffs, unaware of just how high up they are. They then fell below, amid bodies and other living walruses
The pair of two-day-old polar bear cubs shown on the Frozen Planet documentary in 2011. At this age they weighed less than a kilo, but were filmed in a zoo
Members of the BBC Frozen Planet team with Sir David Attenborough and a polar bear during the 2011 series
These massive marine mammals also give birth on sea ice, and turn to the ice edges to mate.
Sea ice also provides crucial shelter from storms and predators, according to an NOAA report.
While the loss of sea ice may not drive them to extinction, scientists say it will have devastating impacts on their population.
‘It is certain that land-based sites alone will not support the same number of walruses that the mixed seasonal use of sea ice and land has permitted in the past,’ scientists wrote in a 2015 study.
‘Additionally, documented declines in the northern Bering Sea among dominant clam populations that are critical prey for walruses, associated with reductions in sea ice declines, provide cause for concern; such ecosystem changes are clearly important for walruses and other animals.’
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF LOWER SEA ICE LEVELS?
The amount of Arctic sea ice peaks around March as winter comes to a close.
NASA recently announced that the maximum amount of sea ice this year was low, following three other record-low measurements taken in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
This can lead to a number of negative effects that impact climate, weather patterns, plant and animal life and indigenous human communities.
The amount of sea ice in the Arctic is declining, and this has dangerous consequences, NASA says
Additionally, the disappearing ice can alter shipping routes and affect coastal erosion and ocean circulation.
NASA researcher Claire Parkinson said: ‘The Arctic sea ice cover continues to be in a decreasing trend and this is connected to the ongoing warming of the Arctic.
‘It’s a two-way street: the warming means less ice is going to form and more ice is going to melt, but, also, because there’s less ice, less of the sun’s incident solar radiation is reflected off, and this contributes to the warming.’
