Facts About Attic Insulation In Oakland and Pleasant Hill, CA
Experiencing discomfort is common when one continues to reside in the same property for generations. Sure, regular renovations and remodeling of rooms may improve the interiors, but addressing a host of issues such as poor air quality, cold & hot areas, and high utility bills is likely to be worrisome. No worries! A home inspector may discover the cause and advise extensive attic insulation in Oakland and Pleasant Hill, CA.
It is interesting to note that insulating the attic perfectly by sealing the entry of outside air can be beneficial in the long run. It also protects the property from excessive heat and cold caused by weather conditions. It is surprising to learn that indoor air quality is sure to improve when the attic is insulated perfectly.
It is advisable to contact professionals or a company well known for providing such services once the property owner is convinced of the need for insulation. The parameters to consider for ensuring proper insulation include the following:-
· R-Value- The value indicates the resistance per inch of the thickness of walls. The ability of insulation to thwart the heat flow is thus understood. It is important to opt for a higher value that signifies better performance and more energy efficiency. A majority of attics require R-38 or more
· Climate- Extreme climate necessitates a higher R-value. This will ensure complete protection inside the home
· Age of Property- Considerably more insulation is required for older homes that have undergone years of wear & tear
· Attic Size- Last but not least, one would need to consult an insulation expert to determine the type and extent of insulation required to seal the attic
There are multiple types of materials used for proper insulation. From Polystyrene, Cellulose, Fiberglass, and Mineral wool to Denim, each comes with its capabilities and R-value. Furthermore, one may select a specific type of insulation depending on the purpose. The following must be considered carefully before going ahead with the task of attic insulation
· Foam Board Insulation-One may use this to insulate attics of unfurnished homes
· Spray Foam Insulation-This is handy to insulate attics with small, hard-to-reach spaces
· Blanket Insulation-Best for unfinished attics
· Blown-in or Loose Fill Insulation-This is perfect for finished attics with space constraints
· Radiant and Reflective Insulation-The attic ceilings are usually insulated by using this particular material mostly to eliminate drafts
There are several advantages of having the attic insulated. Most old homes have to do it several years after moving in. The new property contractors will undertake the task and provide the buyer with a finished attic replete with insulation. The myriad benefits associated with insulation include:-
· Extra Comfort
· Increased Life for the HVAC System
· Improved Indoor Air Quality
· No Moisture Accumulation
· Increased ROI
· Cost-Effective
Crawl space insulation in Walnut Creek and Oakland, CA, is just as essential as insulating other parts of the property. It can improve the livability of a property and keep pests away.

Charles B. Rich House - Squire Rich Historical Museum
Brecksville Historical Association
9367 Brecksville Rd.
Brecksville, OH
The Charles B. Rich House, also known as Squire Rich Historical Museum, located at 9367 Brecksville Road (State Route 21) in Brecksville, Ohio, was built in 1846, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Charles Rich and his wife, Ann Jane, came to Brecksville by ox-team from New Lebanon Springs, on the border of New York and Massachusetts. The journey was made in 1835 and their two daughters Hannah and Lucy were born shortly after arrival. The original property consisted of 100 acres; another 50 or so acres were added later. The land was farmed and the crops included corn, wheat, potatoes, and turnips. Farm animals were also raised.
Lawyer Rich built this house in Brecksville, Ohio, in 1840-1842 for $600 (paid in cash). Rich hired shipbuilders who had come inland from Lake Erie for the winter to help build the house. The beams and some of the interior work are reminiscent of a ship's construction. The house has four rooms upstairs and five downstairs. Originally the house had four rooms downstairs and four rooms upstairs. Later a porch, a shed, and a summer kitchen were added. Back in the days before air-conditioning, farmhouses would often have a separate building (a summer kitchen) where they would cook meals, preserve garden-fresh produce, and bake goodies. Having a separate building meant the women would heat the main house while the food was being prepared.
The floors are made of white ash. There is a thirty-four inch black walnut wainscoting, or paneling. The doors and the woodwork are also black walnut. Lumber for the home came from the trees on property that now is part of Lubrizol, on Brecksville Road. The lumber was prepared by a local sawmill using power from Chippewa Creek. Rich used stoves rather than fireplaces to heat the house, an innovation for the time period. Squire is a title often accorded to justices of the peace. During his 28 years as a justice of the peace, Rich conducted lawsuits, settled family quarrels and disputed boundary lines, and adjudicated cases in the dining room of the house, which doubled as his office.
Charles Rich served as a Justice of Peace for 30 years in Brecksville Township. This occupation was the source of his “title” of Squire. His duties included performing marriages and settling land disputes as well as dealing with criminal cases involving horse and cattle thievery. The family home was also his place of business. Ann Jane Rich not only carried out her duties as a farmer’s wife and mother, but was an expert seamstress as well as a practicing herbalist. The herb garden at the house attests to her use of herbs for both medical and culinary purposes. Her tailoring expertise can be viewed in Holland Snow’s wedding coat, on display in the museum.
Ann Jane died in 1882; the Squire a year later. Hannah Rich Kettlewell then lived in the house until her death 1905; her son, Charles Kettlewell lived there until his death 1941. In 1921, the property was acquired by the Cleveland Metroparks, Brecksville Reservation. It has been Cleveland Metroparks property since then. The historic house has been maintained as a museum by the Brecksville Historical Association since 1961 and was listed with the National Register of Historic Places on February 22, 1979. In 1996, a burst water pipe caused extensive damage of over $36,000. Once repairs were made, a re-dedication ceremony was held in 1997. The Museum can be visited on most Sundays from mid-May to mid-October from 2 to 5 p.m. Tours can also be arranged by appointment.
Six rooms can be viewed on a tour of the Squire Rich House. Tours enter via the back porch into the Summer Kitchen. This must have been a busy place – this is where canning and other food preservation took place as well as food preparation and baths. There is a wood-burning cook stove as well as a variety of kitchen implements. The yoke used to bring water in from the well and cistern is on display, as well as the wood box and wooden tub. According to Squire Rich’s granddaughter, there was no dry sink, the dishes were washed in a pan on the Pantry shelf and the water poured out the window or down a drain in the kitchen. At the Museum the pantry shelves now display a collection of irons, ironstone china and other kitchen utensils.

Texas Cities: Austin
We spent 1 week in Austin, working from home at an Airbnb with 2 desks(!) in North Austin near a yuppie food/shopping area called The Domain. Most of our exploring was limited to a Friday that we took off work, and we were grateful to have our car to explore different parts of the city. Austin seems like a good place to live, and a fun place to visit anytime besides the extremely hot summer, when we were here. Below are our recommendations!
Veggie Food
Tex Mex We really liked all of these places, but there are plenty of other options in Austin as well!
The Vegan Yacht (south of downtown): Has an especially delicious tempeh burrito called the “freeto” ($9) with fritos! They are a bit salty but add a great crunch. It’s combined with a vegan store that had a really fun selection of vegan items that aren’t always found in grocery stores. Parking: free.
Velvet Taco (multiple locations): We love their korean taco (with tofu) and the cauliflower taco (surprisingly tasty). We tried their other 3 vegetarian tacos and didn’t love them. They have meat options as well. This is a chain that we also enjoyed in Houston. Both locations we visited had outdoor seating and had somewhat of a Chipotle vibe (in a good way). Parking: Varies. It was free and easily available at both locations we tried.
Torchy’s (multiple locations): We really enjoyed their migas taco ($3) for breakfast, friendly service, and outdoor seating. If Velvet Taco : Chipotle then Torchy’s : Taco Bell. We would eat here again. Parking: Free and plentiful at the location we visited south of the river.
Other
1886 Cafe & Bakery (Sixth St): This has turned into much more of a tourist attraction than it was when I was in Austin for SXSW 2012; it is listed as a top 10 Austin attraction on several lists online. While it used to have a slightly upscale vibe and involved full table service, now you line up to order at the counter, it’s more crowded, and the cafe feels slightly dirty. However, the Texas-shaped waffle with pecans, fruit, & whipped cream ($14) is still as delicious as I remembered, and eating in the lobby of the Driskill Hotel is pretty nice. Parking: Difficult. We lucked out and found street parking about a 5-minute walk away. You can pay for street parking using the ATX app or a payment kiosk.
The Driskill Lobby - you can eat your food from 1886 Cafe here.
Flower Child (The Domain): This is a great little vegan chain with True Food Kitchen vibes. We tried it in Dallas and really liked the Glow Bowl and a thai wrap. Parking: The Domain has free parking garages with plenty of space.
Pro Tip: Maybe avoid Indian food in Austin. We heard this from a friend, and tried a pretty highly rated South Indian restaurant in North Austin that was very mediocre.
To Do (Stuff We Liked)
Zilker Park Botanical Garden ($8 non-Austin residents, free with American Horticultural Society membership): This is a very pretty place to visit and walk around. In particular, the Japanese Garden has some stunning ponds and the Prehistoric Garden has a very nice waterfall. It opens at 9am - if you’re here in the summer, go as early as possible to beat the heat! The walking path throughout the garden is somewhat shaded but it is still very hot. And wear comfortable shoes - it can be a bit wet and muddy so sandals are not ideal. Parking: Free and plentiful.
Texas State Capitol (free): We really enjoyed our visit. The building is beautiful and allows visitors to roam freely through the lobby and halls. There are free informational tours every ~30 mins, or you can take a self-guided tour using your mobile phone (you call a phone number and enter a code for each item you want to hear about). We enjoyed visiting the Senate and House chambers - there are even staff there to answer questions. It’s also neat to see the portraits of Texas governors lining the rotunda walls on every floor. The air conditioning makes this a great break from the summer heat, and the restrooms were very clean.
Parking: You can park at the Capitol Parking Garage for free for up to 2 hours, and rates after that are quite cheap. It’s also just a ~10 min walk from there to Sixth Street, so it could make sense to leave your car here rather than trying to find street parking or paying $30+ to use a downtown parking garage.
St. Elmo Brewing Company (or other breweries): There are lots of breweries in and around Austin! We happened to visit this one and thought the outdoor, shaded picnic table seating was very nice. Half pints were reasonably priced at $3.50-$5 and we really liked the “Since, Like, Forever” (a double IPA). There is also a food truck in the beer garden - we didn’t eat, but it was nice to have as an option. Indoor seating is also good if you need to cool off. Parking: Free and plentiful.
Walnut Creek Metro Park (North Austin): We somewhat randomly visited here on a Thursday evening for a scenic walk. The trail we walked was very pretty and right by a stream. This seems like a great place to visit if you live in Austin. Parking: Free and plentiful.
Sixth Street (downtown Austin): If you’re staying downtown + aren’t as much of a grandma as I am, I can attest from my college days that this can be a fun place to bar hop in the evening and listen to live music. There is also a Velvet Taco on Sixth Street, which is an automatic win.
To Stay:
Our Airbnb was in North Austin, right on the North Star Greenbelt (which was very pleasant for evening walks). The neighborhood was a bit run down and the house seemed very old and run down, so while we didn’t feel unsafe, we don’t necessarily recommend this area.
Downtown Austin is probably a fun place to stay, but parking is very expensive. We looked at a handful of Marriott Hotels, all of which charged $50 per night for parking. Given this, we were happy to stay away from downtown; the 20-minute drive wasn’t a problem.

The Benefits of Crawl Space Encapsulation in Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek, CA
Some places in the house lose the interest of the homeowner over time. The crawl space is one such place. This place underneath the house is a requirement, but over time, this place falls out of favor. It is not an exaggeration to say that the homeowner tends to forget about this place and lets it be. This leads to the accumulation of dust and debris over time. Also, the place lacks proper ventilation leading to humidity and moisture retention. With no way to do away with the moisture, the place soon becomes a breeding ground for mold and mildew, threatening the house's structural strength. At the same time, the accumulated dust finds its way into the indoor air bringing down the quality of air that one breathes. Homeowners are often unknown of the source of the issues that they start facing. The way out of this problem is to opt for crawl space encapsulation in Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek, CA. The idea might seem to be not needed and a costly proposition, but this is going to pay well in the long run. There are many benefits of opting for crawl space encapsulation: Cuts down on high energy bills- Crawl space encapsulation provides a layer of insulation that makes the HVAC unit at one's home more efficient. The HVAC unit will not have to run hard to meet the right cooling or heating requirement. This helps keep the energy bills down to a great extent. Keeps the crawl space moistureless and dry- With the crawl space encapsulation, which is basically putting up a moisture barrier, the crawl space stays dry. With no presence of moisture, mold and mildew do not get to grow, keeping the property safe. It keeps the insects out- Dark and dingy places are the most favored places for insects and pests to build their nests in. With crawl space encapsulation in Pleasant Hill and Walnut Creek, CA, the place is sealed tightly, keeping most insects out. Improves indoor air quality and keeps the home comfortable- Homeowners need to be made aware that most of the air one inhales comes from the crawl space. Hence, sealing this area means keeping all the harmful pathogens and dust from entering one's home. The air one breathes is pure, which solves the issue for homeowners suffering from respiratory issues. Plus, with the encapsulation, which provides insulation, the floor of one's house keeps warm and hence is comfortable to walk on. Keeps the floor in good condition- If the moisture from the crawl space finds its way into the floors, then they can start to rot away. With crawl space encapsulation, the floors stay dry and last longer. Adds to the property's overall value- Crawl space encapsulation can save the future homebuyer from spending money. They are already getting a house with a crawl space encapsulated. This adds to the house's value and makes it lucrative in the real estate market. Crawl space encapsulation, therefore, is a good investment with a guaranteed return on investment. It has to be done by a professional company for the desired result.

🌞Heat advisories 🌞 Remember to conserve energy during the heat wave and stay hydrated! Flex alert: The California Independent System Operator, or Cal ISO for short, has declared a flex alert for Tuesday because of high demand on the state’s electrical grid as the heat wave continues. A flex alert is a voluntary conservation program under which consumers are asked to take basic energy-saving measures such as setting thermostats higher (to cut down on air conditioning) and delaying use of large appliances until late in the evening. Power outages: PG&E said early Tuesday that about 5,500 customers were without power across its service area, which covers the northern two-thirds of California. Most of those outages were concentrated in four Bay Area locales: Walnut Creek (1,819 customers without power), San Francisco (1,291), San Jose (648) and Fremont (519). The utility said about 236,000 customers have lost power since the heat wave began last Friday, with half of those outages in the Bay Area.

Making and Wasting Time, or: A Calendar For Self-Employed Agnostics Living in Seasonal Climates Who Follow Astrology
Originally uploaded to Joe Scanlan’s website.
“They always say that time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.” –Andy Warhol
At different times in different parts of the world, there was and is great variety in the number of days in the week: calendars with four- (Central Africa), five-, six- (Soviet Union), seven- (Chaldean, now Hebrew and Christian), eight- (Tuscany) nine-, ten- (France and ancient Egypt), thirteen- (Aztec), nineteen- (Baha’i) and twenty-day (Mayan) weeks did and still do exist. As sociologist and rhythm scholar Eviatar Zerubavel has noted, calendars that are not based on astronomy or theism are usually constructed around a pragmatic local cycle, as in the market weeks of West Africa, or a divinatory rhythm, as in the fugue-like calendars of Java and Indonesia. The Javanese have weekly cycles of two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight and nine days going simultaneously, distinguishing their appropriate travel, market, and festival days by the synchronicity of the different cadences. West African communities have weeks with as many days as there are villages in the area, so that each village can host an exclusive market day each week. Their days do not have celestial or god-based names, but are named after each corresponding village; consequently, their names inform the community when and where to buy things on a given day as opposed to what god to worship or what planet is on the rise.
*
Like language, the social structure of time is given to us. And, like language, we take what we like (or can use) from the days and weeks and ignore (or alter) the rest. Why not tailor the calendar to suit your particular needs and then intercalate the dominant calendar so that corresponding dates are readily available? Why not a calendar that functions personally or colloquially with more relevance, resonance and subtlety?
Sigmund Freud: Another procedure operates more energetically and more thoroughly. It regards reality as the sole enemy and as the source of all suffering, with which it is impossible to live, so that one must break off all relations with it if one is to be in any way happy. The hermit turns his back on the world and will have no truck with it. But one can do more than that; one can try to recreate the world, to build up in its stead another world in which its most unfavorable features are eliminated and replaced by others that are in conformity with one’s wishes. But whoever, in desperate defiance, sets out upon this path to happiness will as a rule attain nothing. Reality is too strong for him. He becomes a madman, who for the most part finds no one to help him in carrying through his delusion. It is asserted, however, that each one of us behaves in some respect like a paranoiac, corrects some aspect of the world that is unbearable to him by the construction of a wish, and introduces this illusion into reality.
*
By adding three months to the year and then shortening all fifteen of them to twenty-four days each, the months become consistent in length and more integrated with the change of seasons, with the three new months—Emmanuel, Dorothy and Elizabeth—accentuating the arrival of the new year, the end of spring, and the end of summer. Their location within the calendar year also pushes the months we normally associate with winter, spring, summer, and fall more squarely into their respective seasons. New Year’s Week would be a five-day period (six days, or an entire week, during Leap Year) that reconciles the monthly cycle with the 365-day year, just as the Mayan xma kaba kin (days without names) or the Aztec nemontemi (“hollow” or “superfluous” days) reconciled their calendars with the duration of the earth’s orbit around the sun.
The twenty-four day month also switches easily to seven or eight-day weeks, should the need arise, with no change in the monthly or yearly cycle. A seven-day week aligns just as well with Dorothy or Elizabeth as it does with May or October: both have three days left over after an exact number of weeks have passed. Personally, an eight-day week would be preferable if I had a full-time job since it would give me three days off each week and the month would only be three weeks long. A cinch! For now, though, I don’t have a full-time job, so I’m learning how to structure my own time. This calendar is designed to help make that process last as long as possible.
Laura Mulvey: The alternative is the thrill that comes from leaving the past behind without rejecting it, transcending outworn or oppressive forms, or daring to break with normal pleasurable expectations in order to conceive a new language of desire.
*
My father has been self-employed for twenty-three years. On June 5, 1971, he resigned from his job as a heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration repairman with the Julian Speer Company and went into business for himself. Three years earlier, we had moved from a house on Main Street in Stoutsville to a house in the country that had a pond, a creek and two acres of woods with prolific apple and walnut trees. June 5, 1971 was also my sister Kathy’s sixth birthday. Dad took her with him to Columbus that day not only as a present to her, but also as a way of demonstrating to his employer what he was missing by having to make all those overnight service calls to Ripley, Portsmouth, and Gallipolis. I hated my sister for that, since I wanted to go to Columbus and be a symbol for my father; but, with seven sons and one daughter, he obviously felt she would convey more symbolism. I can appreciate that now, just as I can appreciate his wanting to have more control over how and where he spent his time.
