Ogimaa Mikana is an artist collective founded by Susan Blight (Anishinaabe, Couchiching) and Hayden King (Anishinaabe, Gchiâmnissing) in January 2013. Through public art, site-specific intervention, and social practice, we assert Anishinaabe self-determination on the land and in the public sphere.
The Ogimaa Mikana Project is an effort to restore Anishinaabemowin place-names to the streets, avenues, roads, paths, and trails of Gichi Kiiwenging (Toronto) - transforming a landscape that often obscures or makes invisible the presence of Indigenous peoples. Starting with a small section of Queen St., re-naming it Ogimaa Mikana (Leader's Trail) in tribute to all the strong women leaders of the Idle No More movement, the project hopes to expand throughout downtown and beyond.
âThe Anishinaabeg endure. We do so through settler colonial time, and across space. Â We do so in contention. Untitled (All Walls Crumble) considers this movement. To be Indigenous in the city is so often a struggle for recognition, to be seen, and to resist the erasure that is common in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, etc. Yet with recognition also comes appropriation and co-optation. In this unease, we consider the benefits of erasure, or at least, covert movement. Inspired by stories of our relatives and ancestors counting coup, and Basil Johnsonâs description of warfare more generally, the Ogimaa Mikana Project considers the tension between visibility and invisibility to challenge settler colonial logic. Against a crumbling wall holding up Ottawaâs major highway - scheduled for demolition and replacement - we draw attention to the ways the settler state recycles itself, and by extension, affirms its legitimacy. We see it and resist in provocative ways that mirror a there/not there presence. Against this crumbling wall, we reclaim space for an anti-recognition: to speak to each other, as Anishinaabeg, as communities pushed out by gentrification, as the colonized, and offer a refrain and a sign of defiance: âWakayakoniganag da pangishin. Nin d'akiminan kagige oga ahindanize.â

Displace, 2021-2023 Part of solo show Displace, Project 107 Gallery, Toronto, ON Canada. January 4 to 8, 2023 This building is slated to be demolished. The first development notice went up in 2014, outlining a plan to replace the site with a high-rise condominium complex. In the eight years since, the plans have evolved and the demolition â ever pending â has been delayed. Perhaps indefinitely. Perhaps for a few months. In the meantime, memories remain. The walls, windows, rugs, floors, light switches and layers of paint bear the palimpsest of a century. These are the scenes captured in photography. In the early 20th century, this site was an industrial setting, where electrical appliances were manufactured. By the 1990s, artist studios and small, independent businesses carved out a new territory, and were eventually joined by offices and a data centre, with car dealerships and apartment towers as their neighbours. Walls were covered in stucco, floorplans were redrawn, windows and floors were replaced, but the bones remain. According to the City of Torontoâs Planning department, âThis site was not deemed to have any historical value.â It is a calculus that erases the cultural life behind the bricks â the affordable, creative spaces that breathe life into the building and the city beyond. At 7 Labatt and across Toronto, this heritage, history and culture is disappearing into oblivion. But for now, the building remembers. In a space where erasure is on the horizon, the sense of fragility is palpable. In lieu of a traditional gallery setting, where works of fine art are framed and displayed on white walls, the exhibition takes an unconventional form, recognizing the vulnerability of its site â and subject â via an ephemeral medium. These fleeting, vulnerable images are displayed in different scales and settings, creating a dialogue with the building and its uncertain future. NESTLED ALONG THE SHORES OF...
...Lake Ontario in Toronto's east end, the Leuty Lifeguard Station is a staple attraction as one strolls along the boardwalk.
Since it was built in 1920 by Chapman and Oxley architects, the Leuty Lifeguard Station has helped to save thousands of lives. Over the years it has been moved four times to keep it close to Lake Ontario's edge. During the 1980's the Leuty had fallen into disrepair and was threatened with demolition. Local residents formed S.O.S. (Save Our Station), and enough money was raised to restore the structure. It has since been declared an important historic site by the Toronto (Canada) Historical Board.

We will decide where you will end up, since you would have forfeited the right of being on the âwinning sideââŚâ
Following the end of major hostilities in the global north and the formation of what would later become the Corporate Empire, one question yet remained: What was to be done with the remnants of CorpEmpâs enemies? Not every population center under now-CorpEmp control welcomed the flag of the Platinum Eagle with open arms, and there were many internment camps that housed opposition leadership and combatants by the end of the wars that gave rise to CorpEmp. Arguments over the fate of the defeated varied between forceful integration and reeducation, forced labor, and mass executions.
One warlord made a proposal that would later be accepted by the other warlords. Certain metropolitan centers (mostly ones that offered the most resistance), and various islands were given âindependenceâ so as to house the vanquished. Those defeated enemies were divided into three tiers of âcomplicityâ in opposing the victorious warlords. The political, economic, and military leadership of the forces that opposed CorpEmp (âmost complicitâ) were the first inductees into what would become the âServile Casteâ, forced to do many jobs deemed unfit for the average CorpEmp citizen. Intellectuals, junior officers and politicians, and other persons of âaverageâ complicity were sentenced to being Serviles temporarily for a predetermined time and subjected to forced exile. The average citizens and underlings (âleast complicitâ, as they were just following orders) were given a choice: renounce what they had just fought for/lived under and accept CorpEmpâs rule and ideology heart and soul or accept exile alongside the temporary Serviles.
The reason for offering exile was simple. Lording over resentful populations could prove disastrous in the long run. Depositing those that would be restive in designated areas âoutsideâ the borders of CorpEmp was the faster solution. These Cordons Sanitaires as they would be later known, would also serve as a relief valve to prevent future dissent from fermenting within CorpEmpâs borders. The purpose of the Cordons regarding potential dissent was clear: like CorpEmp or leave it. One distinction between those being sent to the Cordons as âpunishmentâ and those dissatisfied with life in CorpEmp was that voluntary exiles could choose their point of relocation; those whose relocation was mandatory were seldom placed on the same continent of origin. This meant to make establishing contacts between the Cordons and âsubversivesâ operating within CorpEmp Borders more difficult.
To ensure that no one Cordon could serve as a threat to Imperial interests and security, no one anti-imperial movement was allowed to dominate in any one Cordon. Competing gangs and militias (if such a distinction could be made) were too busy fighting each other over maintaining power within their Cordon, rather than extending their influence beyond the Cordonâs borders.
Some Cordons, still resentful of their collective defeat, managed to organize under CorpEmpâs nose and launched a rebellion in 2100 A.D., following the death of Emperor Ignacio I Rotthey. The quick succession of his daughter, Hippolyta, and the intense memetic engineering of the loyal Imperial population kept the rebellions contained within the borders of the Cordons Sanitaires, resulting in the Treaty of Las Vegas (Las Vegas itself a Cordon that bought its freedom, and the rest of Nevada, from CorpEmp). Around half of the Cordons were reconquered by CorpEmp and resumed their role as dumping grounds for undesirables. The other half would form the United Markets, World Congress of Freedom, and Green Consensus. These three powers would be (begrudgingly) recognized as independent by CorpEmp.
The Cordons Sanitaires were stark contrasts to the predominantly rural CorpEmp territories surrounding them. The Cordons were urban sprawls, every inch of ground within their borders covered in urban jungle. This meant to serve as a lesson for inquisitive Imperial children asking about them during their geography and social studies: the ideologies that preceded CorpEmp are cancers on the world, and the concrete and rebar slums were their monuments.
As the centuries passed conditions in most of the Cordons worsened, due largely in part to the depletion of local resources and a near-dependence on CorpEmp for material and financial aid. Many of the âGreat Syndicatesâ that rose to dominate CorpEmpâs economy took advantage of this, outsourcing white collar and other âunworthyâ occupations to the desperate residents of the Cordons at wages barely above subsistence level.
By the 2800s the Cordons Sanitaires were nothing more than dilapidated ghettos, eyesores on the otherwise slowly rewilded surface of the Earth. More and more denizens of the Cordons, as well as dissidents from CorpEmp, were heading to the non-Imperial colonies in the fringes of the Solar System, and to the Extrasolar colonial expeditions that were being created. The Cordons were subject to so much emigration, that debates raged in the Imperial Concert over annexing the remaining Cordons outright. The Cordons Sanitaires as a system were ultimately abolished during the Battle of Earth during the Crystalline War (2801-2885). Due to the aliensâ focus on dense concentrations of human habitation, the Imperial military began converting the Cordons (and Imperial population centers) into a series of fortresses, death traps, and kill zones to lure the enemy in and force them to fight battles of attrition. What became of the Cordons remains the most scarred and irradiated areas on Earth to this day.

METZ, Spiritual Cramp, & Stuck Live Show Review: 12/16, Metro, Chicago

METZâ self-titled debut album came at a time when guitars re-entered indie rock in full-force. 2012 saw breakout albums from bands like Cloud Nothings, The Men, and Parquet Courts, a paradigm shift from the baroque pop of the 2000s towards something like it was during the heyday of the 90s. But similar to Attack on Memory, METZ was bleak, what seemed at the time like a pummeling expression of desolation after the 2008 financial crisis, akin to the waning optimism from the early Obama years. Ten years and three METZ albums later, the world has gotten worse, and the Toronto-via-Ottawa punk band has retained its hard edge. What better time to celebrate their first and arguably still their finest statement?
At the Metro on Friday, like every other night of their tour, METZ played their first album front to back. As the band walked onto the stage, drummer Hayden Menzies played the abrasive opening notes of âHeadacheâ with the lights still off, remaining dim as guitarist and vocalist Alex Edkinsâ siren-like lines began. Only when bassist Chris Slorach entered the fray did we see the band, and they were off to the races, burning through âGet Offâ, âSad Pricksâ, and âRatsâ at a breakneck pace. From the off-kilter instrumental of âNauseaâ to the build of âWet Blanketâ and noisy, dynamic breakdown of âWastedâ, the band showed themselves to be, to quote one of their 2012 contemporaries, masters of their craft.
Including the encore, METZ had time for 5 additional songs, including two from their most recent album Atlas Vending (Sub Pop): âBlind Youth Industrial Parkâ and the swirling, epic closer âA Boat to Drown Inâ. IIâs âSpit You Outâ, a live highlight since it came out, was especially disorienting in its chaos in conjunction with the light show. And, to my pleasant surprise, the band did the motorik âDemolition Rowâ, released earlier this year as part of a split 7â˛â with Adulkt Life. The show served as a reminder that METZ are capable of effectively delving into different subgenres but are still at their best when bashing you over the head with noise.
Opening for METZ were two more punk bands, albeit with different aesthetics. San Franciscoâs Spiritual Cramp combined screamy, political post-punk with self-aware, self-deprecating, self-hating dance jams on tracks like âI Feel Bad Beinâ Meâ and âThe Erasureâ. Vocalist Michael Bingham was filled with banter contrasting the bitter cold lack of pretension in Chicago with Californiaâs sadsack sunniness. âYou canât tell if Iâm being sarcastic,â he said to the crowd, following up with, âI canât tell if Iâm being sarcastic.â The vagueness of tone is certainly a feature of the band, the type to artfully sample vocals at the same time as featuring a barely-audible-but-theatrically-played tambourine on stage. When Bingham declared, âFuck the cops, fuck the president, and fuck you, too,â you could sense a sneering sincerity, one that made the band ironically even more likeable.
And taking a victory lap were local heroes Stuck, a year removed from their most recent EP Content That Makes You Feel Good (Exploding In Sound), two years from their debut album Change Is Bad (born yesterday). As such, they played four (!) new, unreleased songs, including jagged set opener âPunisherâ and the disco beat-laden âFreak Frequencyâ. Live, lead vocalist Greg Obisâ yelped personal and sociopolitical litanies echo the urgency of someone like Squidâs Ollie Judge, backed by the bandâs gnarly rhythms and burning tempo changes. The jangling tremolo and rusted edges of a song like âInvisible Wallâ encapsulated what the band does best: reel you in, but not let you get too comfortable.

Mysterious Kodak Mosaic Discovered Behind Drywall
A mysterious mosaic created during the heyday of Kodak has been rediscovered after decades when the owners of a former Kodak research building knocked down a wall during renovations.
Rochester, New Yorkâs local CITY News reports that the tech company Delta-X Global had been rehabilitating the old Kodak laboratory in Eastman Business Park (formerly known as Kodak Park) to create its new research and development hub.
The Discovery of the Kodak Mosaic
In February, in the midst of demolition work and knocking down a wall in a conference room on the first floor, the rehab team made an unexpected discovery: there was a beautiful and enigmatic mosaic hidden behind the drywall, perfectly preserved out of view for decades.
âThe drywall had been covering a gray cinderblock wall, about 12 feet high and 18 feet long, adorned by an elaborate mosaic composed of tens of thousands of hand-cut tiles, most measuring about one square inch,â David Andreatta of CITY News writes. âOthers were as small as the pips on a pair of dice.
âGradations of blue danced with specks of black, and diminutively detailed dots of yellow and red, against a backdrop of white. Together they formed⌠something. A submarine? A rocket? A fish? A submarine rocket fish?â
Rochester-based photographer James Montanus, the son of the legendary Kodak photographer Neil Montanus, was one of the first people to lay eyes on the rediscovered mosaic before word of the find got out.
âI have a friend who works in that building,â Montanus tells PetaPixel. âItâs a former Kodak research building that housed Kodakâs research scientists. He is one of only two former Kodak employees who are still employed there.
âBecause the building was just sold to a high tech firm in Toronto Canada, they were helping to take down some walls in advance of a $25 million major renovation.â
Uncovering the Meaning of the Mural
Montanus then took to his Twitter account to see if anyone could decipher the meaning of the mosaic.
â[âŚ] no one knows what it means or why itâs there,â Montanus wrote. âAncient aliens perhaps? Portal to another dimension? My friend has worked there for 44 years and no one has a clue. Do you?â
People soon pointed out that the mosaic seems to show scientific principles that allow for camera film and analog photography. The symbols for silver (Ag), nitrogen (N), carbon (C), and oxygen (O) are among the elements seen in the artwork, and there appears to be abstract depictions of things like sunlight, flash, a film strip, and an aperture.
â[I]t represents the science advances that make photography possible,â Tweets Maine-based writer Carla Jean. âBottom right is optics (lenses redirecting light), the top right letters are the elements used to make film (e.g., silver halide coatings) and more chemistry stuff.â
âThe mosaic shows the areas of science, chemistry, electricity, physics, and optics,â Dlugosh-Ostap tells CITY. âAll of those elements combined together were meant to express the work that was being done in this building in the â60s when it first opened.â
A software engineer and Rochester Institute of Technology alumnus named Mike found confirmation of this explanation in a Physics Today article from 1961, the same year the laboratory was opened.
âOne wall of the buildingâs lobby contains a ceramic tile mural depicting fundamental aspects of physics,â the article reads.
Mike also found the mural in an article about the labâs opening published in the Democrat and Chronicle that year.
âDepicted in the mural are the symbols of sound, mechanics, atomic structure, optics, electronics, electrical energy, and photography,â the article says. âThey comprise subjects which will be intensively studied in some 200 âlabsâ in the building [âŚ]â
The Artwork Will Be Preserved
The good news is that Delta-X Global plans to keep the mosaic and feature it prominently in its new research hub.
âWe are proud to be the new owners of the mural,â Dlugosh-Ostap writes in a Tweet. âWe are definitely keeping it and will be incorporating it into our new lobby design!â

Developed in the 1960s by technologist Ivan Sutherland, AR was originally produced as a transparent HMD through which 3D graphics were displayed.(2) In the late 1990s, the technology was becoming greatly advanced, being used in scientific research and environmental design.(3) Furthermore, AR was beginning to be used to perform rapid replay in sports such as hockey and football. By the mid-2010s, it would become the base for the phone application entitled PokĂŠmon Go, the game that would allow millions of people across the globe to catch 3D versions of fantastical creatures in modern spaces using AR technology and the camera on their phones.(4) These more modern applications of AR increased its popularity, making sure that the technology would be more commonly known by the populous.
Andrew Mayhew has done a variety of AR inspired and altered artworks over time. Impossible Things, a team of six technologists located in Toronto co-founded by Mayhew, is known for their work with Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and digital games.(5) Mayhew came up with the concept for ReBlink as a way to provide a modern day recasting of the past.(6) In using AR technology and shape recognition, Mayhew was able to layer different images on top of one another to change the relationship of the original art with the viewer.(7) Mayhewâs production was advertised as a way for the AGO to appeal to a younger audience. In interviews with the artist, he has stated that he hopes it would be a solution for the short attention span associated with the current generations, expressing his upset with people simply walking by beautiful paintings within the AGO.(8)Â In altering the meaning of the works to have a 21st-century lens, viewers are able to better understand the original artists intent within a modern context.
Village Scene in Winter (left), originally painted by Cornelius Krieghoff in 1850, sits at 66.6 by 92.8 cm.(9) The Canadian oil on canvas depicts new settlers walking to and from a small village along a riverbank in which a large church sits. The people and horses carry wood and brick, indicating that the village is fairly new and that the land has been newly cleared. At this point in time, the confederation of the first four provinces is a mere seventeen years away and settlement among the southern regions is well underway.(10)Â By using AR technology, ReBlink transforms this painting into an environmental wasteland (right). Factories spewing smog into the air have taken up most of the landscape. The village, of which little remains, is slowly being disposed of as a demolition team is preparing to destroy the church built in the settlement. The river is polluted and littered with rubber and chemicals, and the riverside, rather than being dominated by new settlers clearing the forest, is lined with a massive pipeline. In front of the painting stands a man in a hazmat suit communicating via an intercom system regarding the viewer using the ReBlink application. As the viewer looks at this painting through their phones they can watch as a wrecking ball breaks down the Church steeple. All of these images speak to a change and destruction of landscape belonging originally to Native peoples. While Village Scene in Winter depicts Europeans constructing settlements in Canada, encroaching on Native territory and landscape, Mayhew and Impossible Things have transformed the scene into a modern scenario regarding the same issues. With recent events involving the Trans Mountain Pipeline, European peoples are once again settling into a land that is not theirs.(11) An environmental downfall taking place on unclaimed native territory speaks to the same level of forest clearing and unethical land claiming done by European Canadians in 1850. With protests lead by indigenous communities against the project being in the forefront of the news, this modern reinterpretation allows for a better understanding amongst viewers who may not be well educated in Canadian history. Mayhew âs remediation of Village Scene in Winter into images of an exaggerated eco-disaster allows for viewers to understand Kreghoffâs depiction and cross-reference it with current events and political climate.
By altering a portrait of an aristocratic woman, Mayhew is able to normalize the idea of the âselfie generation.â Throughout history, wealthy people would have commissioned artists to paint their portraits so that they may have an image of themselves to fondly keep hold of, such is the case with the painting Marchesa Casati by Augustus John.(12) Standing at 96.5 by 68.6 cm, the oil on canvas done in 1919 originally depicted a red-haired aristocratic woman in a white dress looking over her left shoulder at the viewer.(13)Â When using ReBlink, viewers see Marchesa Luisa Casati using a âselfie-stickâ to take pictures of herself. Oftentimes in the media, millennials have been referred to as the âselfie generation,â known for being self-obsessive and for taking a liking to taking photographs of themselves.(14) In remediating the well-known portrait to take photographs of herself through the medium of AR, Mayhew is able to draw the link between the old practice of commissioning artists to paint portraits and the modern practice of taking âselfies.â This remediation allows for generations to understand that preserving images of oneself is no new practice and that the millennial generation is not revolutionary nor worsened for taking these images. Impossible Things is able to convey the narcissistic personality of Marchesa Luisa Casati(15) through the new medium, exploiting to the viewer that the two images, the original and the AR altered one, depict the same action via different technologies.
In a third portion of the ReBlink exhibition, Mayhew and Impossible Things have incorporated AR technology into Drawing Lots by George Agnew Reid. The original painting, standing at 118.2 by 319.8 cm, depicts three boys passing time by sitting upon a brick wall and interacting with one another.(16) This painting is said by Mayhew to be the original inspiration for the ReBlink project. Mayhew juxtaposes the pre-modern age in which children passed time by playing amongst each other, with the newfound digital age that confines people to their devices while promoting social interaction via digital platforms. In Mayhewâs ReBlink version of Drawing Lots, the brick wall is situated amongst the urban Toronto skyline. The trees have been marked for removal and the three boys are now separated, engulfed with whatever they may be viewing on their smartphones. Viewers are able to watch the boys scroll through their phones as cars rolling coal drive by. This juxtaposition between the ways in which people engage with one another in each version points out the drastic involvement of digital media on the populous. By digitizing the painting to have a technological focus, viewers are able to better relate to the feeling of passing time that Reid originally depicted. In remediating Drawing Lots the modern viewers can critically look at the differences in social interaction over time, and by which platform it takes place over. Mayhew encourages the viewers to understand the differences, as well as the similarities in this portion of his ReBlink exhibition.(17) When programming the AR version of the painting, Mayhew coded it so that the three boys would not engage with the viewers looking at them through the application, unlike the prior works. The remediation of Drawing Lots comments on the profound difference of the meaning of âbeing social.â
ReBlinkâs use of AR to remediate and juxtapose the original meanings of famous paintings to modern day reinterpretations works as a translation guide for the current generations of Canadian peoples. In transforming Village Scene in Winter into a dystopian eco-disaster, the act of encroaching on Native land and the destruction of the environment is better understood. In remediating Marchesa Casati to be actively taking âselfiesâ viewers can better understand that the practice of self-preservation through images is no new phenomenon. Furthermore, by creating an AR version of a modern-day Drawing Lots the viewers understand how the digital age has changed us as a people. While ReBlink is revolutionary in its use of AR to communicate old themes to a current audience, similar artworks have also been done globally.(18) However, despite the popularity of AR exhibitions, Mayhewâs ReBlink remediates art in a way that gives a specific social translation to ever-present social behaviours and issues.
