Some of you may have seen the recent news about the Barbie flip phone.
Tumblr media
Produced by HMD, and marketed as a way to stay in the moment without being distracted by apps, the subtext is that this is a basic phone with limited functionality to allow children to access certain phone features (like being able to stay in contact with their parents while not home) without being given unsupervised access to the entire internet.
The Unicorn Play Phone Set features a mimicry of a Barbie smart-phone, with a matching unicorn phone case with a storage pocket for Barbie-themed toy credit cards - and a rainbow wrist strap so you can't accidentally drop it down a drain.
Tumblr media
(Was that drain thing too specific?)
But neither of these are the first foray into Barbie phones.
In the late 90s, there actually was a working Barbie landline.
Tumblr media
This was, from memory, the era of a lot of novelty landline phones so frankly should come as no surprise.
Or Phone Fun Skipper, which featured not just Skipper using a phone, but also a phone for you to use too.
Tumblr media
More in line with the Unicorn smart phone, this is of course not an operational phone, but that isn't what bothers me most. It's that the "phone for you" does not actually look like the phone Skipper is using. It's not even the same colour! What's the point!
Tumblr media
Side note, but Skipper is wearing an adorable little vest here. It's bizarre but loveable.
There have been a few iterations over the years of Barbie "phones" that are actual operational walkie-talkies, and I find those quite charming also.

Released in 1974, Mego’s Communicator was a stylized walkie-talkie made to resemble the same device used on the Star Trek television show. Each walkie-talkie operated on a 9-volt battery and could send and receive voice messages up to 1/4 mile – perfect for alerting your landing party of a pending danger! Mego sold Communicators in two forms: a boxed set and a carded “blister pack.”
A large part of the coolness factor of the toy was its two-tone blue case, silver and black Starfleet insignia, and a cover that flipped up at the press of a button, just like the antenna grid on the original prop. The Communicator also featured a telescopic antenna, a push-to-talk switch, a belt hook, and a green/red alert signal button that was used to emit a “twin warp
Another super cool toy from childhood, they really worked!

I just remembered that my father would get us to play a game where he would hide in tall bushes and give us one of the walkie talkies. The goal was to communicate with his until we could find him and I can't tell if that's mgs coded or not

I was also taught as a child that weakness isn't allowed but that's a whole different story

I just need to say that a lot of the walkie talkies when they're almost completely out of battery start making incessant beeping sounds alerting pretty much anything around to your location and honestly I need a lot more of that in horror games
