It's September and that means that fall activities are either already starting or will be popping up soon, both around Bearcreek and other nearby towns and cities. We've compiled a list, along with some links with more information, to various activities that the locals may be interested in participating in this fall & Halloween season!
Being that we have a Halloween party event planned for the end of October, we didn't want to necessarily throw an event meme out there and instead took some of the ideas and put them in a list under the cut that your characters can either reference, mention going to/headcanon going to, or if you so wish you can discuss paras amongst yourself if you'd like to write any of them out! We just didn't want to overwhelm everyone with a para meme so soon after our last event or before the next event.
go on a hike looking at the fall foliage.
go apple picking.
visit a pumpkin patch.
walk through a corn maze.
make candy apples.
go to a bonfire.
go to a sunflower field.
go on a hayride. (haunted or not-haunted)
go to a haunted house.
visit a place rumored to be actually haunted.
watch scary movies together.
decorate for Halloween together.
carve pumpkins.
paint pumpkins.
go costume shopping.
make their own costumes.
tell scary stories.

Ben are you required to go to the Kings coronation or are you exempt due to being American?
Hello, Thanks for writing; I appreciate it and you. I am directly related to Princess Diana, and her family, and therefore to the Royal family by marriage, by blood to Prince William and Prince Harry. My title is an old one, dating back to one of the last times Parliament decided to "defrock" several families, because there were getting to be too many of us. The title originated in Scotland, family relocated to Northern Ireland, and settled on lands south of Belfast. The family history is similar to many others after World War I (see Downton Abbey). Heavy taxes were levied, land was slowly sold off. Marrying American heiresses to infuse money into the family and estate, creating the American connection. But, that didn't stop the inevitable selling of the house, which was later torn down. The family now resided in a townhouse in London near Hyde Park. The title became what they nickname "on demand," basically meaning it is title only, with no authority, or anything anymore. However, in Northern Ireland itself, we can be "recalled" for "advice" regarding matters of importance. Last time that happened to my grandparents over the Government of Ireland Act in 1920, and my parents in 1998 Good Friday Agreement. My mother married an American politician in 1950. When I was born, it was a back and forth trips across the pond between America and London. I lived in the townhouse when I was at university in London. My mother sold the townhouse, so now even that is gone; feels weird when I go "home" to London and have to stay at the Waldorf. Princess Diana made a point of including us in invitations, enjoyed having the drop of American informality around, including her wedding, and the wedding of Prince William. After he death, her brother stayed in touch for awhile; then, things went quiet. Prince Harry's wedding was more intimate, and Her Majesty's funeral a state major event, and we are now beyond minor. Princess Diana told my mother things often before they got into the press. My mother, and thus I, knew about Camilla from day one. I respect the title Of King Charles III, but. Before my mother's death she said she feared Prince William would be drawn into the Palace atmosphere and turn into Prince Charles, where as Prince Harry, not in line for the throne would have a bit out of an outsider looking in, see the problems, and become like his mother Princess Diana. Prince Charles and Princess Diana divorced, and thus she feared a future "divorce" between the two brothers, William, stuck inside the Palace managed bubble world, would be unable to see or acknowledge what Harry, on the outside looking in, could see, end up being blamed for being a troublemaker. She feared more sensitive Harry, might end up wounded as did Diana. Her insights now sadly seem to be coming true. So, having said all that, very long answer, I am obviously not invited, nor will attend the Coronation, both because of the minor level of the family title, and our family connection to the Royal Family, in many respects died when Diana died. Once in a great while, I attend something, a charity event, or similar, and when introduced, someone sometimes bows; being half American, I have never quite get used to it. Diana would just laugh. LOL. Again, thanks for writing. I remain Respectfully, Darlow, Ben

[HELL HOUSE LLC] 2015
"Fifteen people, including the first group of attendees and the members of the Hell House company that opened the attraction, died in what authorities decreed as an "unknown malfunction"."
[ubasjuice reviews]
Stephen Cognetti put himself on the map with his release of this film, and what started the Hell House franchise we know of today. (I'm honestly not familiar with any of his past works, feel free to educate me.)
One of the few found-footage horrors that really scared the crap out of me, they didn't even incorporare jump scares that much. The way they presented the interviews, the camera footage during the opening, the "making of" phase, was very well done. It draws you into it. It makes you feel like you're watching a documentary.
Creepy. One word is all it takes to describe the feeling when watching the HH series. From the sound effects, music, the lighting, how the actors move, and a big factor is, and not everyone likes, that it's a found-footage POV style of filmmaking.
The Abaddon Hotel, the place where everything happens, is actually a real place you can go in to, it's real name is Waldorf Estate of Fear (formerly Waldorf Hotel), and it also is a popular haunted attraction; but here's the twist, the history of the place has it's own Andrew Tully, who goes by the name of Oliver Sommersby, that was rumored to have killed 25 people in a span of 10 years.
The actors were unknown to me but definitely didn't feel like they were casted just for the sake of. They were perfect for the roles they played in. Each one has a unique personality/role and they made us fall in love with them, thus making it horrifying seeing what they have to endure.
The twist at the end was a cherry on top for this indie horror film. Even though it was just released in 2015, it already gained a massive cult following, and very well deserved.
Highly recommended!
Juicy 10/10

Exception | Carter Baizen x Reader (Part 8)
My Masterlist
Series Masterlist
Summary: You were his one exception. He was yours too.
Word Count: 4400+
Pairing: CEO!Carter Baizen x Lawyer!Reader, Nate Archibald x Caroline Baizen, Carter Eleanor Lydia Y/L/N-Baizen, Chuck Bass x Blair Waldorf, Serena van der Woodsen, Cyrus Rose x Eleanor Waldorf, Lily Bass x Papa Y/L/N (yeah, no comments)
Warnings: Swearing, Gossip Girl References, Infidelity, Car Accident, Teenage Pregnancy
A/N: This is my entry for @baezen‘s writing challenge. Shout out to @franksufferbuddy and @propertyofpoeandbucky for motivating me. The song I used is This Love by Taylor Swift, which seems to perfectly explain Carter and our reader.
Not that you had ever been paying much attention in your science classes at Constance while you were daydreaming about boning Carter Baizen during the lunch hour. But you were aware that Newton’s Third Law of Motion states that every action has an equal and opposite reaction, unless it was Stevie Wonder once sang that problems have solutions. But if every action has an equal and opposite reaction and all problems do have solutions, then the solution to your problems was simply the equal and opposite reaction to all of your actions. There was no other way to put it.
For the first time in forever, it seemed that you and Carter were in agreement of what you needed to do once you put your differences aside. After all, you were no longer the two irresponsible and spoiled teenagers you once were. You were both CEOs who ran two multinational corporations set to merge and co-parents of a young daughter whom you must now raise together. Things had changed for the better, and you had to do the right things.
Following his discharge from hospital, the father of your child found himself moving into the Y/L/N penthouse with you and your daughter upon your insistence. The decision to live together in the same household had been made in order to allow the father and daughter to get to know each other. But the thought of living under the same roof with the man who was meant to be the love of your life did make you feel slightly apprehensive.
With your mother returning to London for some well-needed alone time at her now unoccupied estate, Annalise stuck around to lend you a hand in raising your daughter. She really was your pillar of strength at a time like this. But now that you and Carter were living together, that was only the first step to fixing all that you had messed up within these fifteen years.
And speaking of messes, Y/L/N Industries was certainly the biggest mess you needed to clean up. Apparently the fact that you hadn’t held up to your end of the bargain by going on a proper date with him meant that he would not be pulling his offer to merge your company with his, not that you wanted him to pull the offer anymore. You just knew where he was going with this.
Your father had insisted that the Y/L/N legacy must be protected, and your daughter was as much a Y/L/N as she was a Baizen. She was your legacy as much as her father’s, so the two of you had come to a mutual decision to merge the companies and name your father as the legal heir.
“When our daughter is old enough, she’ll inherit the company.” Carter had promised you when you had signed off on the merger agreement. “Because she’s the best of me and the best of you. I won’t let your legacy be taken away and you can promise your Pop that the company’s not being taken away from your family. It all belongs to his granddaughter.”
The next step to this solution - legitimize Carter Eleanor Lydia as the heir apparent to her father’s fortune. There were three parts to this step, according to Cyrus Rose, who happened to be the legal advisor of Baizen Industries and of Y/L/N Industries during your absence. You may be a very competent corporate lawyer, but your conflict of interest was not something neither you or Carter wanted to deal with. There must be no loopholes in this merger so Cyrus had handled all of it.
In order for your daughter to be named as the legal heir, you had finally added Carter’s name to her birth records in London. To avoid any other loophole, Cyrus had also gotten Carter to go through the legal adoption process as well. By getting it down on paper, he promised you that he wasn’t going to walk away from his responsibilities like you had feared his past self would. This had been his first step to accepting fatherhood.
While Carter Eleanor Lydia was legally his child, her birth was still not legitimate. Perhaps when Cyrus had first suggested how to fix that, you and Carter had seen it as a simple step to avoid loopholes. But the two of you would be lying if you said that you didn’t want to go ahead with the next step.
No other time was right, and the two of you needed to admit the truth. You loved each other despite what you had been through and you could not move on from each other no matter how hard you tried. And after almost losing Carter to the accident, you just knew that you could not waste any more of your time. Fifteen years were long enough.
Eleanor Waldorf took it upon herself to throw you a small and intimate wedding at her penthouse, with Cyrus officiating the ceremony as he did all those years ago for his own stepdaughter. Blair had offered you a dress from her own bridal collection at Waldorf Design and Chuck was hosting the reception at The Palace in your honor. It was the least you could do for all those years of babysitting him and Nate whenever Bart was out of town.
Serena van der Woodsen found herself lurking around the familiar Waldorf penthouse, wondering whether now was the right time to apologize for the part she had played in your departure fifteen years ago. She wanted for things to be okay between the two of you, as she did have a decent relationship with your father whom she had grown to respect over the years despite how you felt about that. She owed your father that much to even try to fix things with you. so she gathered up the courage to approach you while you were getting dressed in the guest bedroom, a solemn expression on her face as she kept her gaze to your reflection on the mirror.
“Hey, Y/N…?”
“Don’t.” You shook your head, your voice rather cold as you fumbled with Lydia Baizen’s jewelry box that Caroline had lent you for the special occasion, not even looking up at her reflection in the mirror as she stood behind you. “Whatever it is you’re about to say, don’t say it. I may have forgiven Carter for what he did, but if you think I’d ever forgive you for what you did… Serena, I never will.”
She did not know what to say to that, for she knew that she was at fault. After all, it was she who had dragged Carter back to her room after that party in Santorini, and she had known consciously what she was doing when she had slept with him. At that moment, all she had cared about was getting back at you for your disapproval of her. But now, she knew how wrong she had been.
“I knew what I was doing, Y/N… and I know I was wrong. I’ll have you know that I’m not proud of what I did to you, and I’ll never forgive myself for it either.” She pleaded, her eyes glazing over as she genuinely meant every word she said.
But you wouldn’t budge. “That’s your choice, Serena. But this isn’t about you. It was never about you. It was about me, and what I had with Carter before you ruined it. It’s about my daughter, my family. The family that we could have had if you had never been a part of the picture. It’s about us and you won’t have a part in it now. I would prefer it that way, actually.” You shrugged her off as you took out the Baizen family brooch from the jewelry box and set it down on the dresser. This would be your something borrowed.
“Now if you’ll excuse me, Serena… it’s my wedding day, and you’re the last person I would want here.”
“Understood.” Serena nodded, her lips curling into a frown as she stepped out of the room. She should have expected this from you. As someone who had been privileged her whole life, as someone who'd had everything she would ever want, as someone who had grown to enjoy all of the luxuries that the Upper East Side had to offer, she realized that your forgiveness was one thing that she would never have. “Congratulations, Y/N.” And with that, she walked away.
Annalise walked into the room as she watched Serena walk off, carrying in her hand the dress that Blair had just dropped off. With the wedding being so last minute, you really did not have time to go out and choose your own dress. You had left Blair to pick it out for you, so you were just as eager to see it as your own maid. “We have the dress! Something new!”
Your daughter followed behind her, holding a bag from Saks. “And I have the shoes!” She announced, closing the door behind her. “They’re blue.”
“Your Aunt Caroline gave me your grandma’s brooch.” You told your daughter as you held it up for her to see. “Something borrowed.”
“Okay, so now we just need something old…”
“Oh that reminds me.” Your maid set the dress down on the bed before she grabbed her purse to retrieve a gold necklace that had a pendant made of pressed flowers that you recognized all too well. “I’ve been saving this for the day you would get married, Miss. Y/N.”
“Annalise, is that…?” As you looked up at the woman who had raised you, you could not help but tear up.
“A piece of the flowers from the corsage Mr. Carter gave you for your senior prom.” She nodded, walking around you to put the necklace on your neck. “When you came home that night, you took it off when you got changed for the after-party. I was saving it because I always knew that you would end up marrying Mr. Carter. You were so happy that night. That was the last night you two were really happy with each other before everything happened, Miss. Y/N. That’s the kind of happiness you should have for the rest of your lives. I just thought you could use a piece of that happiness now.”
You turned around to face Annalise and pulled her into an embrace. “Annalise…” You remembered that night very well. It was when Carter had promised to do right by you during your slow dance. It was when you had conceived your daughter after the after-party. It was when he had confessed his love to you and told you that you were his one exception. It was the night when everything seemed perfect, only to be ruined in the matter of weeks.
“Thank you, for raising me and for all of the good advice you’ve given me. Thank you for being there for me when no one else was and thank you for knowing that… that Carter was my one exception.”
Wrapping her arms around you, Annalise sniffled. “Miss. Y/N, you might not remember the first time we met. You were just a baby. I was only supposed to be a housekeeper, but when your mother needed a nanny, I stepped up because… well, who wouldn’t have wanted to spend every single day with you? You were an angel. You are beautiful and kind and you have a heart of gold.” She pulled back from the hug to wipe away your tears. “I know how hard it was when your parents got divorced, how hard it was for you to see your Pop with someone else. You wanted to be loved and you wanted attention, and Mr. Carter… he loved you so much back then. He loves you even more now. I know you’ve been beating yourself up for the last fifteen years for the way you handled things. As disappointed as I was back then, I want you to know that I’m so proud of you. You’ve made a life for yourself and you’ve raised a beautiful daughter. You’re going to get married to Mr. Carter and you’re going to live happily ever after.”
“Thank you, Annalise.” You grinned at her and turned over to look at your daughter. “I don’t know if I’ve nailed this mom thing yet. But raising a teenage daughter in the Upper East Side… it terrifies me. I know that the only reason you stuck around here for all these years was for me to come home. And now that I’m here and I’m getting married, having my own family.” You shook your head in disbelief, chuckling softly at the turn of events since you had first arrived in New York. “I want you to be a part of it. I want you to… help me raise my daughter like you helped my mom with me, if you wouldn’t mind. Even if I figure out how to do things on my own as I always do, I still want you to be a part of my little family.”
“Oh Miss. Y/N.” Your maid grinned as she cupped your cheeks. “You don’t have to ask. I’m going to be here for you, for as long as you need me to. And if you don’t need me anymore, I would still be here to see you… succeed.”
You donned your Waldorf Design wedding dress and the Louboutin pumps your daughter had picked out. The dress was short, and a lot less traditional. But it just seemed right for you, because it reminded you of your prom dress from fifteen years ago.
Caroline had tied your hair up and pinning it down with Lydia Baizen’s brooch. Hanging from your neck was the pendant that Annalise had gifted you.
Your mother was in tears at the sight of you as a bride, something that she never would have expected to happen when the two of you had attended Caroline and Nate’s wedding a few months ago. But things had surely changed for the better, and you knew exactly who was responsible for that.
“Pop.” You smiled as your father entered the room, dressed in his finest tuxedo for the occasion of his daughter’s wedding.
“Hello, Y/N.” He smiled at you, holding out his arms. “Don’t you look beautiful.”
You rushed over to him and hugged him tightly, your eyes glazing over at the thought of your father being there to walk you down the aisle. He seemed healthy, and genuinely happy with the way he smiled at you. “Pop, I’m so glad you’re here. I fixed it, Pop. I fixed it. I fixed… everything.” Well, almost everything. Months ago, you had been scared to lose him without ever making amends, but now you were glad you could live every daughter’s dream.
That statement did not just apply to how you had fixed the debt that Y/L/N Industries had been drowning in, but also all other dilemmas that you had found yourself in. You hadn’t disappointed your father as you thought you would. You had gained your mother’s trust and Annalise’s forgiveness, Caroline and Nate’s blessing for you to be a part of their extended family.
You had mended your relationship with Carter and your respective broken hearts that kept the two of you from ever finding love with anyone else. You had redeemed yourself in front of your daughter for keeping her father away from her. You had reversed every mistake you had made in the past, and built yourself the future you were always meant to have, with no exceptions.
“I knew you would, baby.” Your father kissed the top of your forehead. “I knew you wouldn’t need me. You never did.” Smiling down at you, he looked over at the others in the room. “Ladies, can I get a moment alone with Y/N before we walk out there?”
Carter, Caroline, Annalise, Lily and your mother left the room promptly, as it was almost time for the start of the ceremony.
“I didn’t think you would need me, Y/N.” Your father confessed as he turned away from your gaze for a moment. “When you were younger, I didn’t think you needed me. Your mother and I couldn’t work things out and we tried… to be there for you. But I couldn’t, because I was so selfish and I was caught up with finding someone to love me. I didn’t think you would have needed me to... I was unfair to you and I realize that now.”
“Pop, no…” You shook your head, frowning. “You know what I-”
“No, darling. I was your father..” He cut you off. “I was your father, and I failed. I let you down, Y/N… and if you think it should ever be the other way around, it’s not. You were only a product of my mistakes and you shouldn’t ever feel like you don’t deserve to have your happily ever after, just because I didn’t have mine.”
“But, Pop… I…” You bit down on your bottom lip, not knowing the right words to say. You fought back your tears as you took your father’s hand in yours. “I ruined your relationship with Lily, just because I couldn’t stand seeing you with Serena. I can’t forgive myself for ruining what you had. I ruined your life, I ruined Carter’s and I ruined my own.”
“But you fixed it.” He reminded you, clutching tightly onto your hands. “You fixed everything, Y/N.”
A small smile crept up on your lips as you realized what he meant by that. “You’re… asking me for my blessing, aren’t you?”
He nodded. “I should have done that fifteen years ago.”
“And if I say no?”
“Does it look like I care about what you think?” Your father remarked, rolling his eyes in a playful manner. “No, seriously… she’s single, I’m single. I’m just trying to see if there’s a chance that we could rekindle what we had before you took off on us.”
You laughed softly as you leaned over to kiss his cheek. “Lily was good to me, Pop. I was just too dumb to realize it. I may not have it in me now to forgive Serena for what she did, but Lily… she deserves her happily ever after and so do you.”
“I love you, Y/N.” Your father pulled you into a tight hug. “Never forget that.”
As you sighed and accepted his embrace, you could not help but feel a large weight be lifted from your chest. Your biggest regret had always been disappointing your father and ruining his relationship with Lily, but now you knew that your father wasn’t one to hold grudges… unlike you. “I love you too, Pop. I love you so much.”
Clear blue water
High tide, came and brought you in
And I could go on and on, on and on
And I will, skies grew darker, currents swept you out again
And you were just gone and gone, gone and gone
In silent screams, and wildest dreams
I never dreamed of this
As you stood under the arching flower arrangement that Eleanor Waldorf had managed to get in such short notice, hand in hand with the man who was the love of your life, for once it felt that everything was right in the world.
Tossing, turning, struggle through the night for someone new
And I could go on and on, on and on
Lanterns burning, flickered in the mind only you
But you were still gone, gone, gone
Been losing grip, on sinking ships
You showed up, just in time
For one moment, you wanted to forget all that had happened since that dreadful night in Santorini. You wanted to forget all about your pointless fight with Carter. You wanted to forget him storming out of your shared hotel room to go to that party with Serena.
This love is good
This love is bad
This love is a life back from the dead, oh
These hands had to let it go free
And this love came back to me, oh
Instead you thought of your prom night where you had been crowned king and queen. It was the same night you had conceived your daughter, who now stood behind you as your maid of honor. It was the same night Carter had declared that you were his one exception, which you really were.
This love left a permanent mark
This love is glowing in the dark, oh
These hands had to let it go free
And this love came back to me, oh
You thought of your Cotillion a year before that, where Carter had been your escort. It was when you had shared with him your dream of helping to rebuild Machu Picchu, a dream that you never got to realize but he had done so on your behalf. Every dream you had given up since that dreadful night in Santorini, Carter had fulfilled because he loved you. If that didn’t make you realize how he never stopped loving you, then you must have been the biggest idiot on the planet.
Your kiss, my cheek
I watched you leave
Your smile, my ghost
I fell to my knees
When you're young, just to run
But you come back to what you need
You thought of the party where you had shared your first kiss as teenagers. Being locked in your bedroom closet together. What was meant to be just a game of seven minutes in heaven with your crush had somehow turned into you finding the painful, messy, heartbreaking yet absolutely beautiful love of your whole life.
This love is good
This love is bad
This love is a life back from the dead, oh
These hands had to let it go free
And, this love came back to me, oh
As much as you had once wished to deny it, Carter Baizen had been every part of your life. From the Archibald parties where you hung out as children, to your teenage years when you had fallen in love, and now your adulthood when you had reunited, you could not be rid of him from your life no matter how hard you had tried. Carter your past, your present and now your future. The love of your life, the father of your child, and your one exception.
“To quote Siddhartha, ‘we are not going in circles. We are going upward. The path is a spiral. We already climbed so many-’”
“Cyrus!” Chuck, Blair, Nate and Caroline interrupted the officiant of your wedding in mid-speech.
“Cyrus...” Blair gave him a look of disbelief, motioning him to wrap up his speech. “I think that is enough.”
“Perhaps, we could skip to the ‘I do’ part.” Chuck suggested, laughing softly as he remembered the event of his own wedding, which was certainly a lot less stressful than his. But that did not make it any easier to deal with Cyrus’ speech.
“Oh come on, you two. You cut me off mid-speech the last time I had to do this. It’s not like Y/N and Carter are being hunted down by the police. The least you could do is let me speak” He protested, earning a laugh from the rest of the non-judging Breakfast Club who were present at your wedding.
“Cyrus.” Nate shook his head, laughing softly. “These two have waited fifteen years to do this. We just feel that they shouldn’t be kept waiting any longer.”
“Okay, fine.” He gave in. “Where are the rings?”
“I got it.” Carter Eleanor Lydia handed your wedding rings to Cyrus as she grinned eagerly. Even she had never expected that she would see the day that her birth parents would end up getting married. But she knew that you both loved each other and that the distance or time spent apart did not have a part in changing that. She knew that she was a product of your love, and not your mistakes. She knew that her parents were much better than the ones they’d had before.
Taking the rings from her, Cyrus turned over to look at Carter. “Do you, Carter, take Y/N to be your lawfully wedded wife?”
“Yes, sir.” Carter replied as he gave your hands a squeeze. “You’re my one exception.”
“Do you, Y/N, take Carter to be your lawfully wedded husband?” Cyrus asked you.
“Yes.” You nodded, your eyes not leaving the man who was now about to become your husband. “You’re my one exception.”
All it took was those four words and the exchange of rings to seal your fate. You were no longer two spoiled brats from the Upper East Side who threw the wildest parties and ruled Constance and St. Jude’s. You were no longer the two long lost lovers named Carter and Y/N who could never be in the same room as each other, but Mr. and Mrs. Baizen. Husband and wife. Parents of Carter Eleanor Lydia Baizen. You were grown up. You were responsible. You were parents.
“Then by the power vested in me by the great state of New York, I now pronounce you married.” Cyrus announced as he looked over at the groom. “You may kiss the bride!”
Carter wrapped his arms around your waist and gave you a quick peck on your lips, leaning into your ears. “Not when our kid could see us.” He whispered, chuckling softly. “Raising a teenage kid is not that easy. We have to set an example and… we have no idea what they see in their phones these days.”
“Oh boy…” You let out a laugh as you cupped his cheeks, giving him a quick peck on the lips before turning over to look at your daughter who was recording your kiss on her phone. “I guess we can be the examples of what not to be?” You shrugged your shoulders, leaning into his ear. “I protected her from the Upper East Side as much as I could, baby. But it’s your turn now.”
After all, Carter Baizen may have been the baddest boy in the Upper East Side, succeeded only by Chuck Bass after his extended hiatus from the life of Manhattan’s elite. The succession at St. Jude’s had probably continued along with the tradition of the Lost Weekend, which your husband had also invented. Who even was the Upper East Side’s resident bad boy now? Who knew?
But now, Carter Baizen was the father of a teenage daughter who was going to be attending Constance Billard School for Girls in less than a month. She was going to be a part of the next generation of Manhattan’s elite. And as Justin Timberlake once sang, what goes around comes around.

fake married + poorly timed confession + the leverage ot3? or any component ship, i'm not picky xD
as it happens, I was already planning on writing a fake married fic for the ot3! so this is more fic than fic description, though I couldn’t really convince myself that any of these three would full-on confess in the middle of a con which is, of course, the most poorly timed you can get. but here you go and please enjoy, mind the cut!
for this ask meme, which is still open
Parker and Eliot crash a senator’s garden party, posing as a married couple so they can be each other’s cover while each one sneaks off in turn. When Eliot needs to take a quiet moment to get rid of the guards on the roof, he excuses himself from the conversation in the parlor with a grin and a, “Better go make sure the little lady’s not having too much fun without me!” This wins a round of chuckles, and Eliot rolls his eyes as he turns away.
Parker, a few seconds later and out in the garden, just blurts out, “I’m going to look for my husband,” and clomps off.Sophie, keeping the senator busy at the buffet table, turns her eyes to the heavens in supplication.
Eliot meets Nate on the roof once the guards are dealt with, and leads him down to the senator’s bedroom so he can lie in wait and be all spooky when Sophie sends the senator up to look for his watch. Parker, meanwhile, is raiding the senator’s office safe for something Nate can blackmail him with. It’s a tightly timed con, but Eliot has a good four minutes to get himself back to the garden before the house guards notice that something’s gone wrong on the roof.
Or so he thought—they must have better failsafes in place than they’d realized, because Parker almost gets caught on her way back from cracking the senator’s office safe. Eliot, who’s half a corridor away and only just done getting his shirt and hair back in order, huffs in exasperation and rushes to intercept the guards about to reach her.
He rushes fast enough that he reaches her first, and instead of letting him barrel past her, Parker grabs him and swings him up against the nearest wall.
When the guards turn the corner, they find the two of them passionately making out. Parker pulls away from Eliot and says, with a drunken giggle, “You boys here to join the fun? Careful, my man here’s mighty possessive.” She lays her head on Eliot’s shoulder, and he takes the hint and glares the guards away.
- - - - - - -
Eliot does not talk to Hardison about this. The absence of that talk is a palpable weight in the van as they drive away from the senator’s house. Nate and Sophie can feel it too, he knows, from Nate’s wince and Sophie’s brief but sympathetic smile. It’s not like Hardison and Parker are—It’s not that they don’t—Well they are, actually, but—
Eliot takes a deep breath and lets it out through his nose. Hardison and Parker are dating, and even before that Parker had really only ever kissed Hardison on cons, but Hardison isn’t possessive, no matter the spike of horror that flashed through Eliot at Parker’s words to the guards. He has to know that Eliot would never try anything with Parker, would never hurt either of them like that. It’s fine. It’s going to be fine.
Still, he’s deeply relieved when Nate says that their next angle of attack is going to involve Hardison and Parker handling the real estate agency, just the two of them, while Eliot provides backup for Sophie almost all the way across town.
- - - - - - -
That relief means that Eliot is not even remotely braced for it when, at the last minute, the plan changes.
It turns out that the mobster’s cousin runs the real estate agency. This explains why the agency’s involved in the first place, but not how, so they still need to get Hardison in there to do his magic on their servers. “Alright,” Nate says, “Eliot, you’re switching with Parker. The mob might be hiding the drugs at the agency, so keep an eye out for guards.”
Hardison groans. “Come on, Nate, I already booked the appointment for Mr. and Mrs. Dallanby! Newlyweds, they just got back from their honeymoon in Kenya, I—I set up the facebook pictures, man—”
“We’ll just have to hope they didn’t do a background check,” Nate says, and Hardison grumbles but Eliot hears keys clicking on the line as he switches the personas around. “If they did, you’ll just pull a Bogota Chop Shop on them.”
So Eliot has to gun it across town to meet Hardison in front of the realtors’. (Parker, making the same trip in reverse, reaches Sophie a full five minutes earlier, because she is a maniac who should never be allowed behind a wheel.)
Eliot and Hardison still have not talked. Eliot tries not to think about that as he pulls into the agency parking lot and Hardison hops out of Lucille to join him. Somehow he is still trying not to think about it when Hardison takes his hand, pulls him through the front door, and introduces them as “Mr. and Mr. Dallanby, oh were you expecting a Mrs. Dallanby? Of course you were, of course, why do I even—I guess we should go somewhere else, hmm, what do you think about that? Come on honey, we’re leaving! I’m so sick of—”
Eliot finally pushes past the weird anxiety that won’t let go of his brain and manages to say something empty and reassuring, and then the receptionist is nervously insisting it was just a typo in the system and offering them coffee while they wait, and Hardison grumpily allows himself to be pulled away toward the waiting room couch.
He doesn’t drop the act there, though. He leans against Eliot and—and snuggles up against him, and somehow Eliot’s arm is around Hardison’s shoulder, and something inside him panics and tries to pull away but Hardison grabs his hand and yanks it down and hisses, “Look the goddamn part!” and there’s nothing Eliot can do but sit there and take it.
They still haven’t talked. Eliot can feel the tension in Hardison’s shoulders. He swallows hard and tries not to think about it.
- - - - - - -
No one at the restaurant opening should recognize him, but Eliot keeps out of the serving area anyway. It’s not hard—whenever the owner comes out and says someone wants to meet the chef, he just snarls that he’s too busy and ignores the woman until she goes away. It’s a lie—he’s only had three days with this kitchen team but he must grudgingly admit that they’re on top of things. Eliot keeps an eye on it all anyway, making sure the prawns don’t overcook and the beef doesn’t boil, with only half an ear for the drama happening in the serving area.
Hardison and Parker are building up to a fight. Eliot does his best to tune out Parker’s insults, Hardison’s anger, and Sophie’s careful coaching on when to escalate and when to wait. He’s not on until later, when the senator shows up; for now his biggest concern is fixing the garnish on these flounder fillets. Something’s still not quite right––maybe some shallots…
The argument in his ear crescendoes and crests. Hardison storms off in a rage. Parker fakes a few weirdly convincing sobs. For such a wooden grifter, she’s surprisingly good at pretending to cry. It’s barely a minute before the divorce attorney sitting behind Parker turns around to offer his services. Eliot can practically hear Sophie’s smug smile.
Hardison goes back to Lucille, or so Eliot thought. When he admits to himself that he’s micromanaging the kitchen more than he needs to be and retreats to the pantry, ostensibly to fetch some carrots but really to cool down, he finds Hardison leaning against the door, fiddling with his phone and munching on an apple.
Eliot almost snatches it out of his hand. “Don’t take those,” he snarls. “They’re for the chicken waldorf, not for you.”
Hardison shrugs, that slow grin of his spreading across his face. “I’m a thief. What do you expect?”
Eliot rolls his eyes and shoves past him to get the carrots. When he turns around, Hardison is framed in the doorway, blocking his way out. Before Eliot can snap at him, he says, “Hey man, are you okay?”
Eliot raises his eyebrows, unimpressed. This is a long con, but not a difficult one. And he got to punch out three of the senator’s security staff just a few days ago. He’s fine.
“You’ve been kinda off these past few days. And you disappear the moment we break for the day.” Hardison doesn’t shrug or quirk a smile to take the edge off his words, like most people would. He looks steadily at Eliot, eyes gentle, and keeps his voice soft and calm. “You know we’re here for you, right? If you’re having trouble with something, or if you just want to talk, we’re here. You’re not alone anymore.
“Our mikes are off,” he adds belatedly, gesturing with his phone. “Just us here.”
It’s a special kind of courage, being entirely sincere with someone, opening yourself to the possibility of whatever they might throw at you. Hardison screams when Parker drops him off of even two-storey buildings and panics at the first threat of violence, but in his own way he’s braver than the rest of them put together. It’s admirable. It’s terrifying. Eliot glares, feeling his fingers clench around the carrot leaves, and knows that there is nothing he can do to intimidate Hardison even a little bit.
It’s not out of fear, then, that Hardison lowers his gaze and steps aside so he’s no longer blocking the only exit. It’s a concession, freely given.
Eliot has a brief, violent internal argument.
He can still hear Parker keeping the lawyer busy and Sophie advising her on how much to flirt, but after all these years of practice it’s easy enough to tune it all out and just listen for his name. He takes a deep breath, and then another.
“You and Parker are good together,” he says. Hardison’s eyes flick up, surprised but almost managing to hide it. “And I’m—I’m so happy for you both.” He doesn’t notice the way he ducks his chin a fraction until after he’s done it, bracing for a punch he knows won’t come. “And you know that I don’t—that I would never—Look, she’s your girlfriend, I’m not ever going to…to even try to…”
This whole being brave thing isn’t working out too well. Hardison is watching him with patient incomprehension. Eliot squares his shoulders and opens his mouth to do this right, but before he can, someone in the hallway cries out, “Girlfriend?!”
Hardison jumps. Eliot lunges forward to grab him and shove him into the pantry, so Eliot is between him and whoever this is, but it’s too late, there’s a hand reaching out and shoving Hardison’s chest, pushing him away from the door—
The hand is followed by an angry waitress—Jenna? Jamie?—who is utterly and bafflingly furious. “You asshole!” she yells over Hardison’s confused spluttering, “I hope she does divorce you!”
Eliot puts out an arm to block Jemima’s rampage, and she turns her look of absolute disgust on him. “Chef, were you aware this jackass is married?”
“Eliot!” Nate says in his ear, at the literal worst possible moment. “You’ve got incoming!”
“Married!” Joanna screeches in Hardison’s face. She’s not quite straining against Eliot’s arm, but she’s conveying through body language and intonation that she’s about three seconds away from violence. “And you have a girlfriend!”
Hardison’s face is absolutely priceless. At a better moment, Eliot would stop to appreciate it, but right now there are three mobsters rounding the corner just a couple feet behind Hardison, and they recognize Eliot from the real estate agency. “Mr. Dallanby?” one of them says, sincerely confused.
Hardison jumps again and glances over his shoulder. “Mr. Dallanby?” another mobster says.
The third one gasps. “You have a girlfriend?”
“He does!” Jen crows. “He’s a goddamn cheater!”
“Oh that’s messed up,” the first mobster says. The other two mutter their agreement. They step forward until they’re looming menacingly behind Hardison. The second mobster turns to Eliot and says kindly, “Are you okay, Mr. Dallanby?”
Hardison is stiff as a board, his eyes wide in a silent plea for Eliot to do something. Eliot, absolutely nonplussed, opens his mouth and closes it several times before he manages, “I’m fine, thanks. It’s—we’re working it out.”
There’s an unintelligible commotion in his ear and Jackie is starting to realize that something’s up. Eliot wonders desperately if this is a nightmare. The first mobster, who seems to be in charge, steps forward and offers, “If you need a hand, son, or if you need a moment to process this—”
“That’s okay,” Eliot says hurriedly. He’s trying to parse the jumble in his ear, and it’s not working but he’s pretty sure the main concern is that he and Hardison have gone off comms and not gone back on again. “I’m—we’re good.” He steps forward and grabs Hardison’s hand, pulling him away from the mobsters.
This, unfortunately, puts him right next to Janice, who declares in strident tones, “Oh no you are not! You have a wife back there, asshole, you can’t just cheat on her and expect—“
At that precise moment, the senator walks around the corner behind the mobsters. “I thought we were supposed to meet in the—Ted Dalton? What are you doing here?” Because of course, they had to be conning the one senator in all of Congress who actually learns the names and faces of every guest at his garden parties, well enough to recognize Eliot three entire days later and dressed as a chef.
The mobsters frown. “Wife?”
Parker, skidding around the corner behind Eliot with an audible squeak of tennis shoes on linoleum, says quietly, “Oh shit.”

In 2007, Jared Kushner purchased a building on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan for a then-record $1.8 billion. Then the Great Recession hit, and the property has been struggling financially ever since. In 2012, Kushner had to sell the more lucrative retail spaces at the base of the building, for $707 million. Today Kushner Companies still owes over $1.15 billion on the remaining office section, including one mortgage for over $250 million. (Note that Jared Kushner says he sold his stake in this particular building to family members, ostensibly to eliminate the conflict of interest from being his father-in-law’s senior advisor.)
Anbang Insurance Group is a prominent Chinese company “whose murky links to the Chinese power structure have raised national security concerns over its US investments.”
“The company’s ties to the Chinese government are sufficiently unclear that former President Barack Obama declined to stay at the Waldorf after Anbang bought it because of fears of espionage.”
One of Anbang’s U.S. investments is set to benefit the Kushners in a big way. Anbang and other undisclosed lenders are bailing out the struggling Fifth Avenue building, under the following remarkable terms:
For the purpose of refinancing debt, the property is being valued at $2.85 billion, “the most ever for a single Manhattan building.”
The $250+ million mortgage is being settled for $50 million, without further explanation.
Kushner Companies will receive $500 million in cash, $400 million from Anbang and $100 million from other investors.
Anberg will take out a $4+ billion construction loan to convert the property’s higher floors into luxury residential units; the completed project will be valued at $7.2 billion.
Kushner Companies and Anberg will become partners, and Kushner Cos will get a 20% stake in the entire building, including those more lucrative retail spaces and the new luxury residential units.
“The planned US$4 billion transaction includes terms that some real estate experts consider unusually favourable for the Kushners. ... ‘At the very least, this raises serious questions about the appearance of a conflict that arises from the possibility that the Kushners are getting a sweetheart deal,’ said Larry Noble, general counsel at the Campaign Legal Centre. ‘A classic way you influence people is by financially helping their family.’”
Ya think?
Kushner Companies is taking advantage of the controversial EB-5 program, “which is intended for economically distressed neighbourhoods and provides residency permits to major foreign investors.” This is not the first time Kushner Companies has utilized this program for a building that is by no stretch of the imagination in an “economically distressed” neighborhood. It’s also not the first time Kushner Companies has used the program’s potential U.S. visas as an incentive to attract wealthy foreign investors (Remember, Trump will still let you into the country if you’re rich enough.) And of course it’s not the first time lenders with business before the White House have made very favorable loans to Kushner Companies with suspiciously convenient timing.

One of the first articles that mentioned Moon’s pikareum sex rituals
A.D. magazine May 1974 by Jane Day Mook (pages 30-36)
New Growth on Burnt-Over Ground
Third in an A.D. series offering a critical look at new religions in America.
Hope and fear are almost always entwined in the impulses that cause a man or woman to seek a faith. Therefore it is not strange that religions contain promises both of divine intervention or mercy, and of judgment. Thus, Judaism speaks of a messiah and an apocalypse, the faithful of Islam expect a delivering mahdi and a terrible, bright-sworded angel, and some Christian Scriptures indicate that Christ will summon saints to glory and the wicked to perdition on a future Day of the Lord. Even among the new religions now sprouting on the burnt-over earth of American religious life, the notes of hopeful expectation and dread of doom are sounded. Religious leaders arise, and are examined by their followers: Are you he (or she) who will deliver us? And almost always a direct answer is avoided in replies that sound strangely like, “Who do men say that I am?” Today, in many areas of America, people are asking a middle-aged Korean named Sun Myung Moon who he is. Writer Jane Day Mook, in six months of extensive research, has come up with some of the answers.
The Unification Church
There has been a rash of headlines:
Korean Preacher Urges U.S. Not to “Destroy President” Minneapolis Star, December 1, 1973
Watergate Day of Prayer Asked by Unification Church Washington Post, December 18, 1973
Unification Church Program Under Way in Houston Religious News Service, December 27, 1973
There have been other media reports:
█ On December 26, 1973, Congressman Guy Vander Jagt of Michigan read into the Congressional Record a statement by the Reverend Sun Myung Moon of Korea, founder of the Unification Church International, urging Americans to forgive, love, unite.
█ Governor Wendell Anderson of Minnesota and Mayors Charles Stenvig and Larry Cohen of Minneapolis and St. Paul, respectively, issued proclamations saluting Moon when he visited the Twin Cities in December last year.
█ Twelve hundred supporters of Moon turned out—with specially issued tickets (100 of them for the best seats up front) — to cheer President Nixon at the national Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the White House on December 13, 1973. They carried signs saying, “God loves Nixon,” “Support the President,” and quite simply, “God.” Afterward, when the President came to greet them in Lafayette Park, one writer reports, they knelt down as he drew near.
█ Six weeks later Moon was invited to the 22nd annual National Prayer Breakfast in the Washington Hilton Hotel. While it was going on, more than 1,000 of Moon’s followers gathered to sing patriotic songs and demonstrate their support of the President. Tricia Nixon Cox and her husband walked among the disciples and spoke with Neil Salonen, national head of the Unification Church.
█ The next day, Moon had an unscheduled meeting with President Nixon. He embraced the President and then, it is reported, “prayed fervently in his native tongue while the President listened in silence.” Before leaving, Moon exhorted the President not to knuckle under to pressure but to stand up for his convictions.
What is this all about? Who is this Korean religious leader, Sun Myung Moon, who reaches the eye of those in high office, including the President himself?
What is this Unification Church that has suddenly surfaced in the United States with so much noise and splash? Is it really a Christian church? Is its aim political or religious, or both?
The Unification Church (whose full name is The Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity) found its way into the consciousness of a few Americans about 15 months ago. In Tarrytown, New York, a gracious estate of 22 acres overlooking the Hudson River quietly changed hands for $850,000. [Price confirmed by Michael Mickler in History of the UC in the US.] “Belvedere” became a center for the Unification Church.
---
Korean messiah? Christ of the second advent? Young Americans find new faith and new life in following him.
---
Joyous, disciplined, loving, Moon’s young followers express the confidence of the deeply committed.
---
Suddenly the residents of Tarrytown discovered that, because this is a “church” and therefore tax exempt, they had lost $8,000 in city taxes. They discovered, too, that by the summer of 1973 the estate was teeming with young people—Japanese, Korean, German, Austrian, and especially British.
The British—115 of them—came in response to ads posted on their college bulletin boards: New York and back for $25 and a summer of “leadership training” to boot. But the Belvedere mansion was not adequate. Crowding was dismal, regulations and restrictions irksome, morale bad, the program unfocused, the unabashed conversion tactics unpalatable. A good many of the students apparently went home to England disappointed and angry.
Meanwhile, the Unification Church had purchased a home for their leader, Sun Myung Moon, who has acquired permanent residency visas in the United States for himself and his family. Reported purchase price of the second estate was $620,000 with an additional $50,000 said to have been spent for furnishings.
By summer’s end attention shifted to New York City and the start of Moon’s 21-city Day of Hope Tour. Full-page ads appeared in the local papers:
CHRISTIANITY IN CRISIS NEW HOPE
Rev. Sun Myung Moon
The ads carried, center-page, a picture of a pleasant-faced Korean man, sometimes in Korean dress, sometimes in Western, sometimes posed with the capitol dome in the background. They told of coming meetings in Carnegie Hall. The same pictures and message were in subways, drug stores, shop windows. They were on leaflets handed out by dozens of earnest young men and women, some American, some from abroad.
Invitations went out to city leaders, especially clergy: “Rev. and Mrs. Sun Myung Moon request the honor of your presence” at a dinner at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. ...
Mayor John Lindsay and Senator Jacob Javits sent messages of regret, but approximately 250 others came. Catholic and Protestant clergy, armed services chaplains, foundation executives, university professors. Solid names all.
The pattern was to be repeated across the country as the much publicized Day of Hope Tour moved south and west through the last three months of last year, and again in the second tour of 33 cities that began in mid-February.
I went with my husband to the first presentation by Mr. Moon at Carnegie Hall on October 1. Outside, a few protesters milled about (Jehovah’s Witnesses mostly). Inside, the lobby was full of young people, most of them Oriental. “Welcome Mother. Welcome Father,” said a charming Korean girl taking our tickets as guards looked through our briefcases. “Welcome to our program. Thank you for coming, Mother. Enjoy it please.”
Mr. Moon was already sitting on stage. He was wearing Western dress, as was his translator, Lieutenant Colonel Pak Bo Hi, formerly a military attache stationed in Washington.
Moon spoke in Korean, flailing the air and pounding the lectern. It was not easy to follow his message, which was about Adam, Eve, Satan, and the Holy Spirit, linked in a mysterious theology we could not piece together.
Who is this man Moon, and what was the message he wanted us to hear?
Sun Myung Moon was born in what is now North Korea in the village of Kwangju Sangsa Ri [in North P'yŏngan province] on January 6, 1920. His parents were Christians, members of the Presbyterian Church, which is the largest Protestant denomination in Korea. After attending village primary school Moon was sent to high school in the southern city of Seoul.
On Easter Sunday 1936, when he was 16, Moon had a vision. As he prayed on a mountainside, he relates, Jesus himself appeared and told him “to carry out my unfinished task.” Then a voice from heaven said, “You will be the completer of man’s salvation by being the second coming of Christ.”
The local ground was ready for such ideas. Already there were among some Pentecostal Christians in the underground church in Pyongyang predictions of a new messiah who would be a Korean. As Moon went about his engineering studies at [a Technical High School affiliated with] Waseda University in Tokyo, he pondered, remembering his vision. In 1944 he returned to North Korea and set about to develop among these Pentecostals a following of his own. In 1946 he founded the “Broad Sea Church.” His followers, it is said, were fanatical people.
Meanwhile, in South Korea a man named Kim Paik-Moon [or Kim Baek-moon], knowing the prophecy of a Korean messiah, had already taken the obvious next step. Kim considered himself a savior and said so. In Paju, north of Seoul, he had established a community called “Israel Soodo Won” (Israel Monastery), and Moon spent six months there learning what was to become the basis of his own theology, the “Divine Principle,” before returning to Pyongyang.
It was about this time that he changed his original name of Yong Myung Moon to Sun Myung Moon. To many people “Yong” means dragon. “Myung” means shining, and Moon and Sun are understood as in English. Therefore, since 1946 his name has meant Shining Sun and Moon. It savors of divinity and of the whole universe. A name is essential to an Oriental, as revealing one’s character.
Now the facts become uncertain. Between 1946 and 1950 Sun Myung Moon spent time in prison in North Korea. The reason? His anti-Communist activities, Moon testifies, reminding us of the rabid Communism of North Korea. Bigamy and adultery, others claim, noting that his real anti-Communist campaign did not take shape until 1962.
In any case, late in 1950 Moon was released and he trekked to South Korea as a refugee with two or three [it was two] disciples. Settling in Busan, he began to propagate his principles. In 1954 he founded his new church [in Seoul], calling it “The Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity.”
Moon had gleaned his theological ideas from Kim [Baek-moon], and a follower, Yoo Hyo-won [Eu Hyo-won], wrote them down. By 1957 Divine Principle, which proclaims the theology of the Unification Church, was in print. It was first published in English in this country in 1966 and for a second time in 1973.
Divine Principle is concerned with the physical as well as the spiritual salvation of humankind, and the doctrine goes like this:
God intended that Adam and Eve should be perfect and that therefore their children also would be perfect. But Satan entered the Garden of Eden and seduced Eve. By this act she became impure, her blood forever tainted. This taint she passed on to Adam, through their union, and so he too—and their children and all humankind—became forever impure.
God wanted to redeem humanity from this impurity. Therefore, he sent to earth Jesus, the second Adam, and Jesus began the work of redemption. Spiritual salvation he achieved. But God’s will was once again thwarted by Satan. Jesus died on the cross before he could marry and father children. Thus, physical redemption was not accomplished. Our blood is still impure. Now it is time for the third Adam or “the Christ of the second advent.” It is time for the physical redemption of humanity and the reign of the New Israel, Korea.
How will all this come about? Quite simply: the third Adam sent by God to earth—to Korea—will marry a perfect woman, and their children will be the first of a new and perfect world. Eden will return to earth. Heaven will be here, not in some shadowy afterlife.
Does Moon consider himself the new messiah? In the early days of the movement, he admitted that he did. He no longer does so, and his followers are apt to smile when asked what they believe and say, “It is a personal matter.” In the national headquarters of the Unification Church in Washington, however, a votive candle burns beneath a portrait of Moon. Furthermore, in some materials of the Unification Church in Korea there are mythical tales relating that Moon was worshiped by Jesus. Jesus asked Moon to help him complete the saving of humankind and supposedly said, “I have done half, but you can do the other half.”
The half assigned to Moon, of course, involves his fourth and present wife. In the early 1940s Moon was married, but in 1954 this first wife left him because, he said, “she did not understand my mission.” He also is said to have had two other wives before marrying in 1960 an 18-year-old [she was 17] high school graduate named Hak Ja Han. At the time of their union (which is called “the Marriage of the Lamb”), he told his followers that she had not yet achieved his own spiritual perfection, but he was confident that she would in time. Together they are the new Adam and the new Eve, the parents of the universe, and their children herald the coming perfection of humanity.
Here reference must be made to “pikareum,” or “blood separation,” which is referred to in Japanese and Korean sources. In this secret initiation rite, it is said that the inner-core members must have intercourse. In the early days of the Unification Church, this was with Moon who, through the act, made pure the initiate.
In 1955 in Seoul Moon was imprisoned briefly and several students and professors were expelled from their universities because of engaging in what were called “the scandalous rites of the Unification Church.” However, in the 14 years since Moon’s marriage to Hak Ja Han, it is not known whether in the secrecy of the initiation ceremony, the rite has become purely a symbolic one.
When asked about this matter of purification, a leader of the Unification Church in the United States replied that purification takes place at the marriage ceremony and that, with special prayers, God’s spiritual blessing and purification are conferred through Moon.
---
To Moon, Communism is equivalent to Satan. Anti-Communism is the political backbone of his movement.
---
Both the theology and what were understood as the practices of the Unification Church have been anathema to main-line Christians in Korea. Moon himself was excommunicated by the Presbyterian Church in Korea as long ago as 1948.
His church has not been accepted as a member of either the National Council of Churches or the National Association of Evangelicals in Korea, both of whom state unequivocally that the Unification Church is not Christian.
But Korea is used to offbeat religious movements. There are dozens of splinter sects and “new religions” there. The Unification Church, or Tong-il Kyo, is one of the largest of these with its claimed membership of 300,000 Koreans.
The Unification Church claims a world membership of about a half million. In the United States the number of followers is estimated at about 10,000 so far with between 2,000 and 3,000 core members.
[A more accurate assessment would be up to 20,000 in Korea and up to 200,000 as a worldwide total.]
The Unification Church may not be accepted by Korean Christians, but it is openly favored by the present government in Korea, and this sets it apart.
In November 1972 President Park Chung-hee promulgated a new constitution giving himself sweeping power. Christian leaders, among others, mounted effective opposition to it and called for a “democratic” constitution. On January 8, 1974, the president responded by decreeing anyone criticizing the constitution would be tried and, if guilty, imprisoned for up to 15 years.
On February 1, six ministers and evangelists (five Presbyterian and one Methodist) were sentenced to up to 15 years’ imprisonment for their criticism of the constitution. They were judged not by a jury of peers in a civil court, but by a special court-martial at the South Korean Defense Ministry.
Compare Moon, in this context of South Korean politics. Moon started and directs near Seoul a school to which the Korean government annually sends thousands of civilian officials and military personnel for training in techniques of anti-Communism.
In Moon’s view Communism is ideologically equivalent to Satan. Anti-Communism is therefore the political backbone of his movement. Thus he wins the support (which may be in part financial) of the government. At the same time Moon, as a “religious” leader, lends the administration the aura of respectability that all autocracies find useful when, for both home and overseas consumption, it is most needed.
Moon exports to 40 countries the main components of his religious-political movement: the Divine Principle theology with its Korean messiah coupled with vigorous anti-Communism. Chameleonic, the group changes its coloration depending on locale and circumstances.
Sponsors of the International Federation for Victory over Communism, they take on in the United States a quiet title: the Freedom Leadership Foundation. In Japan, however, where they have the support of right-wing groups, they are openly part of the World Anti-Communist League. Here in the United States they sponsor prayer and fasting “for the Watergate Crisis.” In Japan, at the time of Red China’s seating in the United Nations, it was prayer and fasting “for Victory over Communism.”
Everywhere, political involvement is a high priority. The Freedom Leadership Foundation, a Unification Church subsidiary, openly avows its goal of “ideological victory over Communism in the United States.” Gary Jarmin, the 24-year-old secretary-general of the FLF says that they are already spending $50,000 to $60,000 per year trying to influence senators and congressmen on national security issues.
As a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization, FLF is forbidden to lobby for specific legislation, but Jarmin and his seven colleagues in the work don’t hesitate to carry on “educational” programs for legislative aides. Furthermore, Jarmin says, there will soon be a totally separate, new organization that will engage in direct lobbying and openly support political candidates.*
* See John Marks, “From Korea with Love,” The Washington Monthly, February 1974, page 57
The World Freedom Institute is another branch of the FLF’s work, training young people in anti-Communist techniques from an ideological and “religious” point of view. Its International Leadership Seminars are rigorous.
Applicants must pass a preliminary interview. Alcohol and drugs are not permitted, smoking is allowed only at certain times and places, clothing must be clean and neat. All scheduled activities must be attended from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily, especially the lectures on Divine Principle, Communism, and Unification thought as a harmony of the Judeo-Christian image of God and the Eastern principle of yin-yang.
For all this, it must be said that political action within the Unification Church is probably limited to a few at center. Moon’s young converts may not be aware of the political side of their movement at all except in the most general terms.
If they wave banners and rally for Nixon, they feel it is because he is ordained by God and given power to be President at this time. Essentially they want to change the moral and spiritual order. They are committed to that, and for them it is enough.
Wherever they go, the Unification Church works to enlist the young. According to those who know the movement in Korea, Japan, and the United States, they are largely the disenchanted young—those whose activism in the ’60s and early ’70s has seemed to bring scant results, those who are turned off by the institutionalized establishment, who are looking for commitment and community, who want not just something but someone to believe in, who want unequivocal answers within a framework of discipline.
There are thousands of young Americans who, in our current retreat from involvement into privatism, fit this description. Moon’s followers are among them. Here in the Unification Church they find instantly a place among their own kind. The hierarchy itself is composed of young people.
The members live in communes that have been set up in most major cities of the country. “It’s like a family,” said one girl who helped establish a new church in Texas. “The whole purpose of the center is based upon God. There’s no premarital sex or drugs or smoking or drinking.” Indeed, Moon thunders against “sexual immorality” as the deadliest of sins.
These are young people who are earnest, sincere, committed, and of high moral character. They are also neat, pleasant, and polite. They are convinced. And they are innocent.
They probably know nothing whatever of Moon’s questionable background or of his strong right-wing political stance. And probably they do not know Christianity well enough (though they study the Bible fervently) to question the theology of Divine Principle. But they have a staunch belief in basic moral values and the possibility and power of spiritual redemption.
If you have not already seen the members of the Unification Church in your town, you will. They have centers in all 50 states and they are busy soliciting both converts and money.
In New York they have reportedly purchased a large old house a few blocks from the Columbia University campus and are offering rooms there for a low rent. They have established an office on the campus under the name of “Collegiate Association for Research of Principles” or CARP (appropriating the traditional Christian symbol of the fish) and at the time of this writing are busy recruiting students for a one-week International Leadership Seminar scheduled for the March recess at the former seminary of the Christian Brothers in Barrytown, New York, which the Unification Church recently purchased.
Some of the Columbia CARP group seem to have had experience in the movement elsewhere. For instance, one young man, a Japanese graduate student, asked a professor at nearby Union Theological Seminary to give him a private crash course in Christianity—something he had not needed for the work in Japan.
To raise money Moon’s followers have so far been selling flowers, home-made candles, bottled arrangements of dried flowers and grasses, and ginseng tea, a herbal tea with medicinal properties.
Everything they earn—everything—goes back to the Unification Church. They claim that when it was necessary to raise $280,000 for a down payment on the Belvedere estate in Tarrytown, the core members across the country dropped everything for eight weeks and did nothing but sell their wares.
Flowers and candles? Yes—and they raised the down payment and more.
In our town on a recent Saturday morning, a young Japanese girl came into a drugstore carrying a small bucket with “Drug Abuse” painted on it in white letters. In her other hand she held bouquets of pink and white carnations wrapped in green wax paper.
“I am Takako,” said the girl. “I am selling these flowers for the One World Crusade. Would you buy some, please?” The high school girl behind the counter looked doubtful but asked, “What is the One World Crusade?”
“Have you heard of the Unification Church?” asked Takako. “We are working against drug abuse.” She held out a paper encased in plastic. At the top in large letters it read: “Immorality/Drug/Abuse/Delinquency/Family Conduct.” Then it introduced Takako and again mentioned the program against drug abuse.
A bystander, a man, asked, “What is this program against drug abuse? I am interested in that myself.”
Takako struggled with English. “You know the Bible?” she asked. “We have meeting and religious education, and we study the secrets of the Bible.”
“But your program against drugs?” the man persisted.
“We work against drugs from the heart,” said Takako. “It is a heart thing, a heart change.”
The man smiled and shook his head. The drugstore owner and a woman customer each bought a bouquet.
This young Japanese girl has left her natural family back in Japan and has come halfway around the world to be part of another family, the Unification Family. This supplants her mother and father, her brothers and sisters. According to Unification doctrine they are impure and imperfect.
She herself, as she is initiated into the Unification Church, will be made pure, and her real family from now on is the group of purified and to-be-purified members like herself. The sadness she has caused (and this sadness is widespread in the homes these young people have left) is of no consequence.
---
Flowers, candles, tea—where does the real money come from that supports the projects of Moon’s church?
---
The idea of family is central to Moon’s teaching. The family gives blessing. At the top is the vast human family, then the national family, finally the marital family. One must be in a family to be saved, for the family provides the basic structure for the new Eden.
Most of the young people who join the Unification Church are single. After a period of membership—usually at least three years—they may be married if they have achieved an acceptable spiritual level. Marriages are arranged—a vast improvement, Moon’s followers say, over the chaotic system of personal choice that has destroyed the American family.
The arrangements used to be made by Moon himself, who knew most individual members in the early days and had, it is said, an uncanny gift for sizing up those he did not know. Now, with the growth of the movement, the arrangement of marriages will surely have to be delegated to senior members of the Family.
In 1970 Moon gathered a great group together in Seoul and performed a mass marriage of 777 couples. For those whom he joins, his blessing is a cherished benediction. It carries the notion that Moon himself is the giver of offspring to those he blesses and it makes pure the tainted blood of those who are wed.
Where does the money come from that supports the Unification Church? No one seems able to find out.
The Unification Church owns estates, a conference center, and many town houses (such as the handsome one on East 71st Street in New York).
It supports its core members in their work of evangelism, teaching, and preaching at a cost for food, clothing, and shelter conservatively estimated at $5 million per year. It brings hundreds of young Germans, Austrians, Japanese, and Koreans to this country at its expense, not theirs.
It pays for full-page ads in big newspapers. It publishes a tabloid newspaper, books, leaflets. It rents large meeting halls and lecture facilities for its leader to speak in. It invites the country’s leaders to banquets at the best hotels.
Where does the money come from? Not primarily from selling flowers, candles, and ginseng tea, though this effort should not be downgraded or underestimated. The member-businesses (in San Francisco, a printing press; in Denver, a cleaning establishment; in Washington, a new tea house) may swell the coffers but not substantially.
Moon himself is reputed to be a millionaire, the head of a sizeable conglomerate in Korea that product marble vases, machine parts, ginseng tea, pharmaceuticals, titanium, air rifles and other items. The value of the empire is estimated at $10 to $15 million. Some followers claim that Moon plows the profits back into the Unification Church, but others insist the industries belong to Moon, who has become a very wealthy man.
What outside backing does Moon have? Substantial sums may come from right wing Japanese industrialists and groups that are eager to reestablish the economic power Japan once held over Korea and who consider Moon “their man.” Former Japanese Prime Minister Kishi, leader of the violently anti-Peking faction of the Liberal Democratic Party, is actively associated with Moon’s International Federation for Victory over Communism.
The big question is: Does the Korean government back Moon? In the article in The Washington Monthly referred to above, John Marks, a student of the CIA in the U.S. and other countries, tackles this question. The Korean CIA, Marks points out, has on occasion secretly subsidized “private” organizations like the Unification Church if they will improve Korea’s image. It would certainly be interested, he says, in a “burgeoning religious-political movement run by a Korean who supports virtually all of the goals and who is in a position to work and lobby for its government’s position on the American political scene.”
Whatever the sources of its money, the Unification Church is in excellent shape financially, and that is very important to it. In Moon’s thinking, money is power and power indicates the blessing of God. God is on the side of power and wealth.
Moon and his followers have come a long way down the road from the mountainside where an earlier messiah, who had nowhere to lay his head, taught his disciples: “Blessed are the poor. Blessed are the meek. They shall inherit the earth.” A.D.

Chinese Company with Ties to Government Will Forgive Four-Fifths of Debt Owed by Family of Jared Kushner
A company owned by the family of Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, stands to receive more than $400 million from a prominent Chinese company that is investing in the Kushners’ marquee Manhattan office tower at 666 Fifth Ave.
The planned $4-billion transaction includes terms that some real estate experts consider unusually favorable for the Kushners. It provides them with both a sizable cash payout from Anbang Insurance Group for a property that has struggled financially and an equity stake in a new partnership.
666 Fifth Ave.Photographer: Daniel Acker/Bloomberg The details of the agreement, which is being circulated to attract additional investors, were shared with Bloomberg. It would make business partners of Kushner Cos. and Anbang, whose murky links to the Chinese power structure have raised national security concerns over its U.S. investments. In the process, an existing mortgage owed by the Kushners will be slashed to about a fifth of its current amount.
Kushner has sold his stake in the business and will not profit directly from this deal. In all likelihood, no laws are being broken. That doesn't stop this from forming a classic example of kleptocracy in action, though.
"At the very least, this raises serious questions about the appearance of a conflict that arises from the possibility that the Kushners are getting a sweetheart deal," said Larry Noble, general counsel at the Campaign Legal Center. "A classic way you influence people is by financially helping their family."
And, as Senior Advisor to the President (his father-in-law), Kushner can have a lot of influence over policy regarding China.
Kushner, who is married to Trump’s daughter Ivanka, has become something of a de facto envoy for the administration, and was present for a meeting between Yang Jiechi, China’s top diplomat, and his father-in-law at the end of February. As one of the president’s closest advisers, he could have input on a wide range of issues affecting China, from national security concerns and territorial disputes to trade matters and allegations of currency manipulation. There are discussions under way between China and the U.S. on a potential summit between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to take place as early as next month.
What better way to ensure that the President's son-in-law—arguably more of a policy wonk than Trump and therefore highly influential to the President—leans toward favorable policies with regard to China than to arrange for his family to negotiate a shockingly profitable sweetheart real estate deal with a company Bloomberg describes as follows?
The company’s ties to the Chinese government are sufficiently unclear that former President Barack Obama declined to stay at the Waldorf after Anbang bought it because of fears of espionage. Now Anbang will be business partners with in-laws of the First Family.

Buying or Selling a Home in Waldorf MD? Listing your House?
Buying or Selling a Home in Waldorf MD?
As the health crisis started making its way throughout our country earlier this spring, sellers have been cautious about putting their homes on the market. This hesitation stemmed primarily from fear of the spread of the coronavirus, and understandably so. This abundant caution has greatly impacted the number of homes for sale and slowed the pace of a typically busy spring real estate season. Mark Fleming, Chief Economist at First American notes:
"As more homeowners are reluctant to list their homes for sale amid the pandemic, the supply of homes available to potential home buyers continues to dwindle".
With many states like Maryland beginning a phased approach to reopening, virtual best practices and health and safety guidelines for the industry are in place to increase the comfort level of buyers and sellers. What we see today, though, is that sellers are still making a very calculated return to the market. In their latest Weekly Housing Trends Report, realtor.com indicates:
"New listings: On the slow path to recovery. Nationwide the size of declines held mostly steady this week, dropping 23 percent over last year, a slight increase over last week but still an improvement over the 30 percent declines in the first half of May.
Although we’re starting to inch our way toward more homes for sale throughout the country, the number of homes on the market is still well below the demand from buyers. In the same report, Javier Vivas, Director of Economic Research for realtor.com shares:
"Sellers have yet to come back in full force, limiting the availability of homes for sale. Total active listings are declining from a year ago at a faster rate than observed in previous weeks, and this trend could worsen as buyers regain confidence and come back to the market before sellers."
Lawrence Yun, Chief Economist at the National Association of Realtors (NAR) seems to agree:
In the coming months, buying activity will rise as states reopen and more consumers feel comfortable about homebuying in the midst of the social distancing measures.
“More properties will have to enter the market in June to bring the number of options for buyers back to normal levels for this time of the year, nationwide and in all large markets.”

This absence was made up for by Edward’s close relationship with his mother; He was the center of her life. —Edward excelled at his studies and became an accomplished pianist. As he grew older, Edward became enamored of the life of a soldier. World War I raged during most of his adolescence and Edward dreamed of the day he could join the battle. His mother’s greatest fear was that she would lose Edward in the war. Every night, she prayed that it would end before her only son turned eighteen and was old enough to enlist. Nine months before his eighteenth birthday, the Spanish influenza hit Chicago, infecting all of Edward’s family. Gravely ill, they were treated in the hospital where doctor Carlisle Cullen worked. Edward’s father quickly succumbed to the disease. On her deathbed and fearing for her son’s life, Elizabeth Masen begged doctor Cullen to do what was necessary to save her son. Somehow, she seemed to know doctor Cullen had the supernatural means to save Edward. —Moved by Elizabeth Masen’s plea and having already thoroughly considered the idea of creating a companion, Carlisle took Edward from the hospital late that night, carrying the unconscious boy to his home. There, Edward became the first human Carlisle changed into a vampire. Edward formed a deep bond with Carlisle, who became a father to him, gaining Edward’s trust and love the way his natural father never had. It was Carlisle who first realized that Edward possessed mind-reading abilities; He noticed Edward answering questions that Carlisle had not asked aloud. Edward had always had a knack for reading people; After his transformation, this ability blossomed into a true psychic talent.
Edward’s new family gained a member when Carlisle transformed Esme to save her life after her suicide attempt. Edward was still young enough to appreciate a mother’s care and Esme gave it to him. But as much as he respected Carlisle’s ideals and valued Esme’s gentleness and tenderness, he couldn’t help but question what it meant to be a vampire. —After almost a decade of living with Carlisle, Edward decided to leave his new parents and experience an alternate style of vampire life. He began drinking human blood instead of animal blood. Rather than becoming a true villain in his own estimation, he became a vigilante. Edward used his mind-reading abilities to target serious criminals as his victims—murderers, rapists, abusers, pedophiles and the likes. For his first victim, he tracked down Charles Evenson, Esme’s abusive ex-husband. In the end, though he couldn’t accept taking so many human lives, no matter the justification and in 1931 he returned home to Carlisle and Esme and their way of life. Edward knew from hearing their thoughts that Carlisle and Esme were sometimes concerned that he had no romantic love in his life. When Carlisle transformed Rosalie Hale and brought her into the family in 1933, Edward knew that Carlisle and Esme hoped that she and Edward became a couple. But as stunningly beautiful as Rosalie was physically, Edward was not attracted to her somewhat shallow and self-absorbed mind. The feeling was mutual. Edward and Rosalie always treated each other like brother and sister and were not always on the best of terms. When the Cullen family lived in Alaska, Edward had another opportunity to find romance, this time with Tanya, the leader of the Denali coven. Though Tanya was interested in Edward, he did not return that interest.
It wasn’t until the Cullen family returned to Forks in 2003 that anyone had captured Edward’s attention. There, Edward met a human girl named Bella Swan. Bella was clearly different from every other person he’d ever met in two impossible-to-overlook ways; First, her blood “sang” to him the way no other human’s had; Second, her mind was the first he’d encountered that was entirely closed to his mind-reading abilities.
V. PRESENT
After nearly being noticed by the population of Forks that the Cullens weren’t aging, Edward and his family moved to the city of New York, where they were determined to start up a new life, without having any real estate at the time. Now, they all live in the same building, but they all have their separate apartments. —Edward is still the do-gooder he has always been ever since he met Bella and had Renesmee and therefor, when he heard a car crash outside, it would seem fair that he too would save someone’s life. He had met Blair and Chuck on their various showings at the MET parties (to which the Cullens were invited as the city’s newest elite family) and thought of them as two respectable people with their very own unique personality and traits. He found them curious as a couple and started to spend more and more time with them, to Bella’s disliking. Though, he couldn’t help himself but find them intriguing and has even considered diving into real estate with Chuck, hoping that Bella would join Blair in her fashion venture. Though, things didn’t seem right, there were still people whom believed that Chuck had murdered his father (which, in essence, was true) and had the couple’s car crashed. Naturally, Edward had taken notice of it as the car had crashed outside of their building. Despite the blood, both he and Carlisle saved the couple from their impending death and although both Chuck and Blair barely survived the transformation, they were thankful to both Edward and Carlisle. About two years later, the newborn couple has moved from their safekeeping in Carlisle’s apartment with the help of Jasper and Edward to control themselves and they are regularly spotted with Edward and surprisingly, Bella at his side. —Though, Edward knows that their secrecy of being vampires won’t last too long in New York, as the city tells and spots you everywhere you go.
FORTUNATELY FOR YOU, THE ROLE OF EDWARD CULLEN IS OPEN.
