the upside to writing means that nonrecruited characters don't have to die, which is good, bc for narrative purposes I prefer to minimize recruitment.

on the other hand, i always feel a little awkward when a postcanon goes "yeah, everybody's fine except the obligate lord & retainer." So we're gonna have a few deaths, although I only have one locked in:

Hilda dies at Derdriu. Sorry Hilda. I find her death fascinating in light of what it means both for her and Claude's characters, and I think it lends tragic weight to Claude's departure -- he's misjudged the situation in Fódlan so profoundly that a friend died about it. My meta on this is extensive enough for its own post, but. Damn.

There are other characters I don't have active plans for who might wind up on the chopping block, but it's easier to list the characters I do have plans for:

Bernadetta is presumed dead at Gronder Field, killed on the central hill before it was set alight. As it turns out, she survived, albeit with severe burn scars. Nobody can quite understand why she's so happy about this. To Bernadetta, it's the best thing that ever happened to her -- now she's definitely, irreparably "unmarriageable," and she doesn't have to worry it anymore!

Mercedes surrenders at Fort Merceus. With Emile dead, Mercedes has lost her main reason to fight for Adrestia, and with the fortress fallen, the Empire's days are numbered; she's lost the will to fight her former friends. Since she's not actually Faerghan, her siding with Adrestia isn't technically treason, which is a relief -- despite feelings of personal betrayal, nobody really wants to treat Mercedes like a traitor.

Petra surrenders at Enbarr. Her loyalty to Adrestia was in service of Brigid. If Adrestia's going down, Petra's not going down with it; she owes her survival to her own country. She hangs around long enough to lay down some new diplomatic norms with Dimitri and Ferdinand, but she leaves for home ASAP.

Lysithea likewise surrenders at Enbarr; she's not out to die for a lost cause. She's still got her parents to think of. This turns out to be very fortunate for reasons I'll get to in a bit

Dorothea doesn't surrender immediately, but not for Adrestia's sake. When Enbarr's defenses collapse, Dorothea rounds up every civilian she can find who couldn't evacuate and barricades the opera house, refusing to surrender without a guarantee of safety for herself and her people. Ferdinand heads up the negotiations, since he's more or less taken charge of Enbarr.

Speaking of which, Ferdinand resumes the Aegir role of Prime Minister. Nominally he's under Dimitri's oversight, but in practice he's largely autonomous -- Dimitri does not know enough about Adrestia to govern it, and he's got enough to worry about between Faerghus and LEICESTER, FOR SOME REASON, DAMN IT CLAUDE.

Lorenz probably survives as the resident Leicester wrangler. If it's not him, then it's Gloucester Sr, and I'd rather just write Lorenz.

I have plans for Leonie but they don't come into play just yet.

... as for everybody else ... I have some vaguer long-term plans lined up, but in general if I haven't mentioned them yet they're fair game. ^^;;

Währenddessen sitzen Schüler von nebenan im Hof an den Springbrunnen, füllen die späte Pause mit Döner und Energy Drinks und warten augenscheinlich darauf, vom Hausmeister des Platzes verwiesen zu werden. Trainings-Szenario im großen Besprechungsraum gegenüber - wildes Gestikulieren vor großem Monitor, bedingte Aufmerksamkeit Aller, schüchterne Kaffeekellnerin und große Teller mit Keksen auf den Tischen. (Die Stunden: Schwül, wolkengrau, regenlos.)
