REDress Previously known as the "Amalgamate" timeline, now it was completely rewritten. The families of the amalgamates took revenge on Sans and Alphys, injecting them too with Determination, melting them into amalgams as well...

War Rewind Flowey and Sans mess with the resets, mistakenly send themselves back to the time of the war between humans and monsters. Flowey dies, but Sans, adopting baby Chara to save them from their fate, allows Asriel to survive in the future and become king. Now all humans who fall underground will be treated as friends. This timeline was fairly inspired by Timetale! And also by my chats with @ask-dcf :3

Hopeless Timeline Flowey grows bored, and decides to torture Sans with Save Files and Resets to see how far that would go. The story then starts to take interesting turns as I RP it. Welcome to my world of giant underpants and other daft things. It makes a change from the incessant ‘glummy’ news.

First of all, I want to wish everyone a happy, prosperous and healthy 2020. Now then, you are probably wondering where this post is going to lead. Hopefully, by the time you’ve read it, you will feel a little happier than you did before you read it.

I Like Walking

I like to go walking whenever possible, with my wife. She goes every day, whatever the weather, but I’m not so brave and usually wait until it is at least dry. Most of our walks follow the same route, so after 12 months or so of photographing the same scenes over and over, I started to look for different ideas. Maybe photos from various angles, “Nah!!” I needed something unique.

Gimp

Thank heavens for the free photo editing software, Gimp. It’s not quite as powerful as Photoshop, but it is free and with a little imagination, you can create almost anything. With that in mind, I started taking photos of the mundane while on our little hikes. The washing line above, no one would give it a second look, so how could I make it more interesting. I know, a giant pair of men’s underpants!! It looks good to me.

More Pie

It soon became a habit of taking mundane pictures and adding things to the view to make them ‘different.’ Pye Corner is the name of a small farm that we often pass. It is a beautiful place, secluded with the River Lugg passing through. What a Pye Corner photo needs is a……. pie! So I added a steaming hot chicken and mushroom pie. Sorry if you think I’ve gone mad.

Giant Slipper

Wouldn’t it be good to see a roadblock? How about one of those giant slipper boots? Just the job. The photo looks so much nicer now it has something interesting going on. Talking of slippers, how about a foot blocking up the road? Yeah, now we’re flying. This is much more interesting than the same old photos day after day of the same old bits of tarmac and fields.

The Day The Earth Stood Still

Another time, just after we had had a smattering (sorry if that’s not a real word) of snow, the robot from ‘The Day The Earth Stood Still’ decided to show up outside the local pub. He looked very intimidating, to say the least. Locals say to us they have never seen the things we encounter on our daily walks. Perhaps they’re not looking hard enough. I hope you enjoy these fun photos as much as I have enjoyed creating them. And of course, there are my Benchman photos which I do enjoy creating with.

The Museum of Cosmonautics

When it comes to must-visit places in Moscow, Russia, the Museum of Cosmonautics generally doesn’t make the same lists as The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral or the Bolshoi Theatre…however, does that mean it’s not worth adding to your Moscow itinerary? This post will explain!

What is the Museum of Cosmonautics?

The Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration. It charts the history of the Russian space race and famous Russian astronauts and has an impressive variety of space equipment, suits…and even some famous taxidermied dogs (more on that in a second). The museum itself is actually located at the base of the monument “To the Conquerors of Space,” which is a 100-meter titanium obelisk erected in 1964 to celebrate the achievements of the Soviet people in space exploration. (Pictured below.)

Note: The Museum of Cosmonautics is not the same as “Star City,” which is the Russian space training facility. Star City is where cosmonauts still train today, and it’s home to the world’s largest centrifuge! You can tour it, click here for more info, but you have to apply for a visitor permit at least 45 days before you intend to go. (We did this before my brother-in-law visited and were denied because the cosmonauts didn’t want to work over their holiday break. Can’t blame them!)

Take a Look Inside The Museum of Cosmonautics!

There are a lot of interesting things to see in the Museum of Cosmonautics – even if you aren’t that big of space exploration buff. Likely the first exhibits you’ll notice when walking in will feature two taxidermied dogs. These are “Strelka” & “Belka’ and they are the first dogs to ever go to space and return. Strelka went on to have 6 puppies, one of which was given to President John F. Kennedy. This dog ended up having puppies with the Kennedy’s dog, Charlie. JFK jokingly called the pups “pupniks.” (I thought that was funny, personally!)

There are a lot of space suits in the museum! I personally found this interesting. Some are replicas and some are originals. The two I found most interesting (that were original) were the first space suit used to exit a spacecraft into outer space and the suit worn by Michael Collins during the Apollo 11 mission (the moon landing)! I couldn’t really find any info on how Collins’ suit ended up in Moscow, but hey, it’s here! Also, the space suit of Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (the first person to go into outer space!)…I believe is in Washington, D.C. at the Smithsonian? Not at this museum in Moscow (although, there appears to be a replica). I do apologize if this is incorrect…however, I couldn’t find any information on this and there were no signs indicating the suit was actually Yuri Gagarin’s.

I also like seeing the various equipment that the cosmonauts used to train before launching as well as the bicycle they would get to use to stay fit once they were in space!

You can also see the original descent module that the Soyuz 37 crew used to get back to earth with! Soyuz 37 was a 1980 Soviet manned space flight to the Salyut 6 space station.

You Can Buy Space Food

You can buy the same stuff the cosmonauts eat at a vending machine near the entrance of the museum, haha. It costs 400 rubles. I couldn’t resist buying a tube of “space food.” I have yet to taste it as I’m waiting to do this when we’re home with family – so, everyone will get a taste!

So, Is It Worth Visiting The Museum of Cosmonautics?

Honestly, I really enjoyed my time at the Museum of Cosmonautics. I’m grateful I was able to see it! However, if I was on an incredible time constraint visiting Moscow, such as, maybe only 1 or 2 days…I wouldn’t say you have to kill yourself trying to visit it. (You can’t leave Moscow without seeing the Armoury, though!)

However, you only need about 2 hours to see the highlights of the museum. It is also quite easy to get to using the metro (and it’s right next to the VDNKH metro station). Or, it’s about a 600 ruble cab ride from the Red Square area. So, if you have a couple extra hours to spare while in Moscow, you won’t regret visiting even if you’re not into space exploration! (I mean – you can buy space food!)

Also, if you don’t do a tour, I suggest paying for an audio guide (only 150 rubles). This is because not all of the signs throughout the museum are translated to the English. If you plan to take photographs as well, there is a 250 ruble fee for this too!

There is one more thing that slows down your website speed, which is Google fonts. Actually rendering a google style sheet and font takes a lot of time. Fortnite Chapter 2

Fortnite Chapter 2 is absolutely amazing and it’s been a huge turn for Epic.

I mean… people watched a black hole for days and couldn’t wait to “drop into a new world,” as epic showed on their website, getting players pumped to check out the new island for Fortnite Chapter 2.

The Fortnite Chapter 2 map has some interesting locations and a lot of exploring, which you earn XP for simply by discovery. The XP earned through playing allows you to earn new Fortnite skins, emotes, and gear to show off in the game.

Since Fortnite’s birth, you have been able to buy what’s called a battle pass, allowing you to earn additional XP leading to even more rewards.

As mentioned above, it’s comparable to collecting cards before the millennials switched things up, and it’s crazy to see how much has changed, don’t you agree?

Fortnite creates new friendships

Whether you choose to play Fortnite or Save The World, you’re still going to be gaming with others (if you choose to fill your squads up with stranger friends). Further allowing you to talk with, laugh, dance and share emotes in a build while spray painting together before your final attack in order to be the last to survive.

Fortnite has always been a game that brings people together. The game has even brought families together, playing in the same room, rather than just staring at Snapchat they get to attempt survival on the island, laugh, scream and maybe cry a little when defeated (at least I do).

Fortnite World Cup 2019: Building better and faster!

Indeed, Positive Celebrity has made a few friends while visiting Twitch and playing Fortnite’s Save The World. We’ll just call him M-Dawg but he’s one of the good guys in the game and we’re thankful for his friendship!

What is the prize for winning the Cup?

Being that you can win a huge prize of up to 10 million-dollars, teens, and adults play in the contender league which now includes, solo or squads (a team of up to four).

In fact, the game is now considered an e-sport! According to TechCrunch, there have been some major wins in contender leagues, in Fortnite Season X.

“The big winner in today’s solo challenge was 16-year-old Kyle “Bugha” Giersdorf, who won $3 million for beating out the competition in the solo tournament. And, as sports writer Darren Rovell noted on Twitter, Giersdorf’s prize pool is only $850,000 smaller than the pot for the winner of the U.S. Open, which is set to begin in a few weeks at the same stadium.

Indeed, the esports prize pool is one of the biggest awards for a popular competitive event. Wimbledon winners took home less than $3 million and Tiger Woods won $2 million for besting the field of competitors at the Masters.”

Fortnite Save The World

Fortnite Save The World lets gamers go through different missions all while battling some intense zombies.

You get different rewards that help you progress in the game but it takes a lot of time and grind to achieve and complete the game as a whole. But it’s also a lot of fun because you can team up with a squad in Fortnite Save The World as well.

If you purchase Fornite Save The World before it’s release then you do get a couple of perks and couple skins with a pickaxe. I personally thought it was worth it.

Fortnite Save The World has been growing over the last few months with more and more players.

With that in mind, there’s an interesting phenomenon happening in that game, where players will attempt to scam new players into dropping their loot, mats, and guns, so never just join in and go into what’s called a “trade box,” you are likely about to get scammed.

Fornite Save The World scams are popular enough that I will say there are some YouTube heroes out there protecting the squad.

These YouTubers will go into Fortnite Save The World and essentially “scam the scammer,” my nephew was the first to show me the videos and they are hilarious, check some of them out below.

You will laugh, the scammers who get scammed for their crime end up watching their weapons get destroyed, leading to screaming and crying, and even attempts at saying their “cousin works at epic,” absolutely hilarious.

Fortnite Rare Skins and more

The Fortnite “rare skins,” are exactly like collecting holographic Charizard Pokemon cards. For example, the Fornite skins today have dropped and they include the one, the only Skull Trooper.

Skull Trooper is just one of the most popular skins to have and we have no doubt that almost everyone who can afford has bought it.

They even have the Skull Trooper dressed as a female, catching the eye of those looking for Fortnite girl skins.

Skull Trooper officially has a girlfriend and her name is Skull Ranger.

What is Fortnite Chapter 2 and the new world?

Basically, there are many theories right now trending on Google about Fortnite Chapter 2 and it’s a new world.

As a matter of fact, the whole map seems to be some kind of base, which also includes a bunker and the very house of “the visitor,” which will likely make more sense as we progress through the season.

Not to mention, The Visitor in Fortnite X is the one who caused all the chaos and led us into Fortnite Chapter 2. As a matter of fact, we did not think we’d be able to visit his actual home on the new map.

Further, the house is filled with memorabilia from Fortnite Season X, as he’s brought many souvenirs with him, including the clock from titled towers, a statue from Sunny Steps, and according to Forbes there’s even a hidden basement.

“In terms of his general living space, he has his control center in a secret basement you have to break through either the floor or a cabinet to access.”

Besides, it’s a pretty interesting storyline and as it’s as though we are part of “the movie,” and being able to watch the LIVE events make the game feel even more interactive for Fortnite gamers.

ast Friday I had the privilege of briefly meeting a Holocaust survivor, hearing an extended recorded conversation with another Holocaust survivor, and hearing an hour-long talk from a German Jew who fled to the US shortly before war broke out.

It was, of course, sobering. And terrifying, when we consider where we are right now.

Eva Mozes and her twin Miriam were taken into Dr. Mengele’s experimental lab. Three thousand twins went in. Two hundred came out.

They were subjected to many different experiments. At one point Eva was supposed to die, injected with an unknown substance while her sister waited under observation for the comparative autopsies. But, “I spoiled the experiment. I didn’t die,” reports Eva. She survived and ultimately opened the CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Educational Center.

I don’t need to spend time reviewing the atrocities of the Nazi regime. We all know Nazis are bad, we’ve seen it in all the movies and comic books.

But I actually think that’s part of our danger now. We’ve made the Nazis a caricature of themselves, a cartoonish byword instead of real people. We forget they were real people, who often thought they were not only justified but were doing the right thing for the largest number of people. We think real people could not possibly have gone there, could not possibly go there again.

But let’s look at what really happened:

Only 33% of the German voting citizens voted the Nazi party into power. It didn’t take an evil majority; it just took some people who thought it was a good idea, others who went along, and a lot who didn’t bother to vote otherwise.

Most of the pre-war Germans weren’t vocally anti-Semite. Walter Sommers, a German Jew who came to the US in 1939 and today is a docent at the museum, said his non-Jewish schoolmates, neighbors, teachers, and coworkers were very friendly with him. They didn’t support the Nazi platform at first, they just didn’t vote against it.

Many of the pre-war Germans didn’t like what was happening. On November 9, 1938, Walter was walking home with a friend who was in the Hitler Youth — everyone was — when they observed the beginning of what is now known as Krystallnacht, an SS-organized attack on Jewish businesses, synagogues, and homes which killed hundreds, sent thousands to concentration camps, and destroyed countless businesses and synagogues. They saw German firefighters trying to save a burning synagogue and being restrained by SS, and German police ordered not to interfere in the physical attacks upon Jews. Walter’s Hitler Youth friend was upset along with Walter.

Denial was powerful and widespread. Walter Sommers said most people, Jew and non-Jew, kept responding to the new anti-Semite laws with, “It’ll blow over.”

Then the Nazi party gained enough strength to crack down on dissenters, sending protesting pastors and political activists to the new camps. And suddenly it wasn’t safe to disagree or protest any more. The chance to be heard, to stop what was happening, was gone.

That in itself is enough to make us stop and think about what happens when we say, “Aw, it’s a hot topic right now, but it’ll pass. It’s not affecting me.”

Letters home from Dr. Mengele

But the most chilling exhibit in the building for me was not the first-hand descriptions of the ghetto or the camp, or the lab experiments, or how a mother pushed her son into a labor group to save his life just before her group was death-marched into the woods and massacred. No, the most chilling exhibit for me was a collection of personal letters home from Dr. Mengele.

They’re sweet letters from a man to his family, eager to see them, asking after friends and neighbors, trying to work out how his wife can visit him during the war. They’re letters which, if you did not identify the sender, would be displayed anywhere as an example of the hardships of war and a man’s love for his family back home.

They are a blood-curdling reminder that even Dr. Mengele, even Goebbels and Hitler, were actual human people. That real people could deceive themselves into heinous acts the world still shrinks from addressing.

It didn’t start with murder, it had to start slow and build. There were just over 8 years between the Nazi rise to power and the construction of extermination camps. At each step, the people had choices.

“That could never happen again,” I’ve been told time and time again. I’ve even heard it used as a justification for civil rights infringement or government registrations — “Yeah, it could be used wrongly, but we don’t have to worry about that now that we know, because that could never happen again.”

Whyever not? We’ve convinced ourselves of our own moral superiority and rely upon that perception to prevent tragedy, rather than applying the moral objectivity which might be more useful than disdain for the fools of the past.

This is why free speech is important to me, even if — especially if — I disagree with what is being said. (It’s easy to allow free speech which echos one’s own sentiments; the test of your patriotism is allowing someone to say something different.) This is why fighting racism, sexism, and religious discrimination is important. This is why the first six amendments particularly matter (okay, maybe not the Third quite so much in this age) even if inconvenient to us, because those are the rights which disappear first under dangerous regimes. This is why we should never say “that could not happen again” and instead say “that will not happen again, not on my watch.”

Germany wasn’t looking for a Holocaust. The Nazis did that by taking advantage of distraction, discontent, division, and apathy.

You’ve heard before that all it takes for evil to triumph is for good people to do nothing. Today I want to remind you that doing something does not have to mean calling people names on the street or online. (In fact, I think it’s more often counterproductive, forcing people to shout their line harder and making it impossible for them to consider what you’re saying. Don’t make it hard for people to join your side.) Doing something means contacting your elected officials, showing up for discussions and voting, making an effort to reach out to disenfranchised minorities, praying.

As I write this, the country is reeling from the Las Vegas concert shooting. Within hours my social media feeds started the utterly predictable debate over blame. Names were called, commenters were unfriended, and we became more divided as some immediately tried to make political hay while the bloody sun shone.

Yesterday I announced I was participating in Inktober as a way to make everyone else feel great about their own artwork, but today’s prompt was “divided,” and today’s drawing wasn’t funny.

Nothing personal, Alaska and Hawai’i, you just didn’t fit. I still love you both.

Wrong and right.

This week, please find someone you disagree with, and find something you like about them. Maybe even compliment them on it. If this is hard for you, start small, maybe not with someone who voted for the Other Party but with someone who puts the toilet paper under instead of over. (Monster.) Get some practice and build the habit.

Last week I prayed for someone I deeply disagreed with. Granted, my prayer was along the lines of, God, please help [redacted] stop being a turd, but it helped. We should try to remember that we’re all real people, and none of us have exclusive and permanent rights to the moral high ground.

Disneyland with kids is amazing. It might sound silly but when we first found out that we were going to be dads one of the very first thoughts that went through my head was “ hooray! Someday we could to take our kid to Disneyland!” If you’re planning a trip to Disneyland or already have one on the books doing Disneyland with kids is one of the most special memories you’ll ever make.

So what do you do on your first trip to Disneyland with kids? Well, there are rides you’ll do and then there are characters you’ll meet, but there’s more to it. We’re going to share our favorite attractions to do with toddlers and with big kids as well as the easiest options for family fun in both Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure, but we’ll start with the original.

Prepping for Disneyland with kids

If you haven’t read it yet go check out our article on planning and prepping for a trip to Disneyland with kids. Basically you want to decide ahead of time what the most important experiences to you are (fireworks, parades…) as well as make sure you got your dad toolbox ready, AKA your backpack of supplies and the Disneyland app.

  What to bring into the park:

smartphone with a great camera (love the Pixel!)

lots of simple snacks ready at a moment’s notice

your own stash of wipes and paper towels

light jackets for everyone (even rain ponchos)

the Disneyland app loaded onto your phone

sunblock and hats

As long as you have the supplies with you the rest of the day is going to be a breeze. Seriously, the backpack/app combo is totally the ultimate Disney dad toolbox.

Disneyland’s FastPASS system

Disneyland uses the FASTPASS system which means that you can scan your entry ticket at different stations to get a pass for a shorter wait time for an attraction later in the day.  If you want to leverage the system, go for it, but know that you can have just as much fun without it. If you’re using FASTPASSes, start your day by getting passes for what is most important to you to ensure that you’ll get to do that ride that day.

Tip:  pay close attention to the time stamps on your FASTPASSes as they both say when you can return AND when your next FASTPASS will be available to get.

Disneyland Guide Land by Land

The Disneyland Resort has two parks (you probably know):  Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure.  If you’re going to do only one, Disneyland with kids is the way to go.  It has a great balance of attractions for really young guests as well as adults.

Tomorrowland Guide

Tomorrowland is a great place to start if you’re an adult.  The main attraction being Space Mountain, it’s the perfect launch to a day.  Bigger kids like Tomorrowland for its Star Wars theme attractions, from Star Tours to Jedi Training, the Star Wars Launch Bay to the Path of the Jedi.  Who knows how this will all change when the newest addition to Disneyland opens in 2019:  Star Wars Land.

For smaller kids though, you’ve got three really fun attractions:  Finding Nemo Submarines, Autopia, and Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters.  Oh, and the Astro Orbiter… but that’ll make you nauseous.

Planning tip:  hit Space Mountain and Finding Nemo first thing in morning or at the end of your day. The lines are super short if you’re there within the first hour of the Park being open.

Characters to meet

The highlight in Tomorrowland is within the Star Wars Launch Bay.  Here you’ll be able to meet Chewbacca, Storm Troopers, and of course, Darth Vader.  There are queues within the Launch Bay, but the atmosphere and Star Wars displays are pretty cool and you won’t mind waiting.

Fantasyland with Kids

Enter through the castle, just do it.  We just did Disneyland with kids and I’ll tell you straight up, Fantasyland made the whole trip worth it.  Here’s the big disclaimer though: not all of the rides in Fantasyland will be a hit with all ages. From a kid’s perspective Pinocchio, Snow White and Mr Toad’s Wild Ride are all strangely creepy. There was a fair amount of screaming.

Having said that, Peter Pan’s Flight, King Arthur’s Carrousel, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Tea Party were amazing with the kids.  

Time saving tips:  walking through Sleeping Beauty Castle is fast and easy and is a great way to occupy time if nobody has the patience to wait for lines.  Also, the Storybook Land Canal Boats and Casey Jr’s Circus Train cover the same territory.  Pick one and nobody will be the wiser if the other is skipped.

Feel special:  if you ride King Arthur’s Carousel, ask the cast members at the attraction to point you towards the carousel horse named Jingles.  This was Mary Poppins’ horse and is specially painted with her emblems.

Characters to meet

The characters we have most commonly met over the years, and this holds true today, are Alice and the Mad Hatter.  They wander continually and are really spacey… always perfectly in character.  This also makes is tricky to get a great pic with them because they’re genuinely distracted by EVERYTHING else.  That’s okay though, the kids loved meeting them.

Pixie Hollow is also right by Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, so meeting Tinkerbell is a breeze.  To snap pics with the many Princesses, you’ll have to stop by the Fantasy Faire just outside of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle.  They may also be wandering about, but there is a queue and process for a guaranteed Meet and Greet.

Tip:  some kids need a buffer between them and characters. Ask if your kids want to be right next to these oddly familiar faces before they freak out.

Frontierland in the afternoon

There’s not a ton to Frontierland so if you’ve got only one day, don’t linger here.  Big Thunder Mountain is the prime attraction to hit up and it really is awesome.  It’s my personal favorite rollercoaster within Disneyland.  The other main attraction of Frontierland is the Rivers of America where you can relax by the water, get on the water on the Mark Twain Riverboat, and explore Tom Sawyer Island.

Note:  big changes are happening in Disneyland right now including revamping the Island and areas on the backside of the Rivers of America.  Know that access to much of Frontierland’s space is limited while the Park undergoes updates and the addition of Star Wars Land.

Fronteirland is great for dining when you do Disneyland with kids.  From the outdoor vendors with snacks to the restaurants, you’ll have lots of options and plenty of seating.

Top picks for dining in Frontierland:  Rancho del Zocalo, Stage Door Cafe – both have simple menus and are easy with kids. Rancho del Zocalo has lots of seating, but the Stage Door Cafe does not.  It’s a grab-and-go sort of place.

Characters to meet

There aren’t too many characters that roam through Frontierland, but Woody and Jessie are almost always a guarantee here or over in California Adventure by Toy Story Mania, and often Pocahontas winds her way around the river bend. The cool thing about Frontierland and its cast is actually the cowboys.  If you’re lucky enough to catch one, the cowboy stand-up comics and shows are awesome and hilarious.

Adventureland: best spot in Disneyland with kids

Adventureland has long been our favorite place in Disneyland.  Indiana Jones Adventure was the first scary ride I ever did as a kid, and now it’s one of my favorites as an adult. If you’re doing Disneyland with kids though, if they’re pretty young you may need to skip this one, because it’s a whole lot more thrilling than just a simple roller coaster.  If the littles are daredevils though, let them check it out.

The best things about Adventureland though are the mellow attractions that are good for any age.  If you’ve never done the Jungle Cruise with a toddler, you have to; it’s hilarious and so exciting for them.  Tarzan’s Tree House is also a hit. Tarzan is one of our kids’ favorite movies, so getting to go through the tree house and see Tarzan and Jane and the animals, it was one of their favorite experiences in the Park.

Tip:  the Jungle Cruise at night is really fun, so be sure to hit it both during the day and after dark.

Lastly, the Enchanted Tiki Room and its ridiculously cheezy singing birds and flowers is a must.  We hung out in the Tiki courtyard before the show, watching all of the gods moving and talking. Then going in and actually watching the show, the kids were totally in awe.

Characters to meet

Moana.  Seriously.  Meeting Moana was at the top of our bucket list for Disneyland with kids and it was really perfect.  They were dumbfounded when they saw her and they had so many questions. It was unforgettable. 

New Orleans Square relaxation

On a hot day sitting on a bench by a fountain in New Orleans Square is just ideal.  It’s one of the more calm and quiet areas of Disneyland and when you’ve got wild children, it totally mellows them out. The tighter street area of the Square is beautiful and a slice right out of NOLA, but for the relaxation, grab some beignets and sit until the grand old trees.  This is one of the spots to let the smallest visitors grab a nap if needed, which can be important to maintain a happy time.

The attractions of New Orleans Square are all about chillin’ out too.  Pirates of the Caribbean has a little thrill with two small drops (and you sometimes get wet, soaked), but for the most part is just a mellow boat ride everybody enjoys.

Note:  even kids who love pirates might be spooked when face to face with them, FYI.

The Haunted Mansion is the other big attraction.  It’s again, nice and mellow, but also children might be creeped out.  It’s best during fall and winter when it’s set up as Haunted Mansion Holiday.  Jack Skelington and the crew from the Nightmare Before Christmas take it over and it’s awesome! It’s fun with haunted jingle bells playing and all kinds of Halloweentown stuff.  It’s one of the reasons we want to do Disneyland with kids next Christmas.

Characters to meet

Depending on the day of the week there may not be anybody to spot, but if you’re lucky a band of pirates might stroll through, including Captain Jack Sparrow.  Also, this last trip we spotted Princess Tiana and Dr Facilier from the Princess and the Frog… because it takes place in New Orleans.

Tip:  also watch for Princess Tiana and Dr Facilier also hanging out on the decks of the Mark Twain when it’s docked in Frontierland (close to New Orleans Square). And what’s more New Orleans than a beautiful old riverboat?

Critter Country fun

At the very end of Disneyland things get rustic.  That’s where you’ll find Splash Mountain and the Winnie the Pooh ride.  Pooh is cute and colorful and silly.  It’s great for little kids and adults that have a soft spot for cute things.  It’s a must if you’re with a child.

Note:  Once upon a time the Country Bear Jamboree was where the Winnie the Pooh ride is.  If you’re quick and know where to look, you can spot the talking taxidermy heads within the ride near the end, but you have to turn around and lean forward and break your neck to see them.

Splash Mountain is the big ticket item though.  For all of the cute, singing animals within the old mountain there is plenty of thrill and creep-factor.  Yes, you will get wet.  Yes, there is a double drop in the dark.  Yes, there is an ominous chorus or terror and despair before you take the big plunge.  It’s all in good fun though and if you’ve got a brave kiddo, go for it.  We took our oldest and he refuses to say he enjoyed any part of it… but he totally did.  Ahh, Disneyland with kids…

Tip:  this is a spot to get a FASTPASS, for sure.  If it’s a rainy day, chances are the lines will be swift, but on a hot sunny summer day you’ll be so glad you got the shorter queue.

Characters to meet

They’ve created a really great setup to do a meet and greet with Pooh, Tigger and Eeyore.  There is one queue to meet all three, much like meeting the Princesses.  When it rains, they just shift the queue to be undercover at Pooh Corner and you still get to hug them all.

The other folks to watch for in Critter Country are Briar Bear and Briar Fox.  They’re not always around, but when they are they like to roam and stop for pictures.  They’re hilarious and act like doofy guys when you pose with them, so know that little kids might not be all up for a hug.

Tip:  if you haven’t grabbed a Disney PhotoPASS card by the time you’re in Critter Country, get one from the cast members working with Pooh and friends.  It’s a cool way to capture professional photos all around the park.  Also, PhotoPASS cast members can help you by using your own camera to take pictures of your with characters and such, so leverage them.

Mickey’s Toontown (if you have the time)

On beyond It’s a Small World is Toon Town. I will say that it’s the coolest place and is visually amazing. You’re literally walking around in a cartoon world.  There are some attractions in Toontown that kids may enjoy, including Gadget’s Go-Coaster and Roger Rabbit’s Cartoon Spin, but the purpose of Toontown really is just being in such a whimsical place… and to meet Mickey Mouse.

Note:  Toontown typically closes earlier than the rest of the Park, so if Disneyland with kids includes a visit here, check what time the land closes that day.

It’s 7 am on a chilly December morning in Cairo, Egypt. I’m excited (and slightly hesitant) to go on an overnight camping trip in the White Desert. It’s my first time camping and I have no idea what to expect. All I know is that I’m in for some beautiful landscapes. My mom is a trooper and has decided to come along on the adventure.

By 7:30 am my mom and I are sitting in a car with our tour guide, Mido. I’ve barely slept thanks to late night packing, so I’m in dire need of coffee. Mido points out some of Cairo’s famous sites on our way out of the city. Once we officially make it out of Cairo, I sit back and drift off into a half-sleep; we have a couple of hours until we arrive at the rest stop.

Why Egypt:

So, where exactly was I going on this grand adventure? Well, let’s take a step back to explain why I decided to visit Egypt in the first place.

Since I’m part Egyptian and have family living in Cairo, I’ve had the fortune of visiting Egypt several times in my teens. My family and I would spend a good chunk of the summer chilling at my grandma and aunt’s houses, sleeping by day and meandering through the streets of Cairo by night. Thanks to deathly hot summer temperatures and a general lack of resourcefulness on my part, the only places I’d visited in Cairo were the Citadel, the Pharaonic Village, and the Great Pyramids. I’d also visited Alexandria, Hurghada, and Sharm el Sheikh, but was fully aware (and slightly embarrassed) that I hadn’t even scratched the surface of Egypt, despite the fact that I’d spent nearly eight months there over the course of five years.

This time around, I was determined to actually see what Egypt had to offer and my digging led me to stumble upon the Black Desert and the White Desert. Once I saw pictures of these mystical places, I knew I HAD to visit, which led me to partner with Egypt Tailor Made to experience their Overnight Camping Black and the White Desert tour. For those of you who know me, you know that I don’t camp. Call me a princess but I really, really value toilets and running water and genuinely fear bugs. I am so not one with nature. Let’s just say that my first camping experience was quite…interesting. More about that later. Now that you have some context, let’s get back to the tour.

The Journey:

We arrive at the rest stop and buy some snacks and my mom and I commiserate about the state of Egyptian bathrooms (I’m usually not that much of a diva but this was a whole other level of gross bathroom). Anyway, I digress. After driving for a little bit longer, we switch over to a 4×4 desert car and meet our local Bedouin guide Ahmad, who is an expert at navigating the area. Our first stop is the Black Desert, so named thanks to the millions of black volcanic rocks dotting the desert landscape. Although volcanoes haven’t been a part of the Egyptian landscape in tens of thousands of years, wind and erosion left behind all these rocks that make the desert look like another planet. Pretty cool, huh?

At this point, it’s late afternoon and we are starving. We stop by this little hut restaurant and feast on Egyptian beans (ful), tuna, and salad. Although the meal is simple, that ful was some the best I ate in Egypt.

After lunch, we head over to Crystal Mountain. Funnily enough, Crystal Mountain isn’t really a mountain. Rather, it’s a large rock ridge consisting of stalagmites and stalactites. The ground is littered with tons of loose crystals, making the entire area sparkle in the sunlight. It’s pretty magical, because sparkles.

After taking a thousand photos or so, we clamor back into the car to our next stop – El Aqabat, a small valley at the edge the White Desert. El Aqabat means “the punishment” in Arabic; named so because it was particularly difficult for camels to get across during the good ole caravan days. Thanks to the soft-as-a-baby’s-bottom sand in this area, our car also struggled a bit to get in and out of El Aqabat.

At this point, it’s getting close to sunset so we drive to the White Desert, where we will be camping for the night. Although the area looks like it’s filled with snow, all that white is naturally formed limestone rock formations. Even the giant rocks are shaped naturally by the wind! Mido leads us around the desert and we all have way too much fun spotting various animals and shapes in the rocks. I swear someone is secretly carving these shapes out!

We pile into the car once again and drive for about ten minutes before stopping in the middle of the White Desert. Mido announces that this is where we’re camping for the night. My mom and I glance at each other, quickly realizing that camping did not mean an official campsite like we’d assumed. It meant pitching a tent in the middle of the desert. Oh boy. Mido confirms that there is indeed no bathroom so my mom and I promptly decide that we’ve had enough to drink for the night. This would have been an excellent time to have a SheWee (teehee) – lesson learned!

By now the temperature is rapidly falling, so all of us huddle into the Bedouin camp area. Mido and Ahmad start a fire for us and Ahmad starts chopping veggies and boiling water for dinner. The food smells amazing (and tastes even better). While we’re waiting for dinner to cook, we snack on fruit and drink tea. I ask Mido about the political situation in Egypt because I’m curious and it quickly starts a passionate and interesting discussion about politics, religion, and culture.

Everyone goes silent once dinner is served and for good reason – everything tastes delicious. We’re each served a giant portion of grilled chicken, broiled meat, steamed rice, chicken soup and veggie stew. I’m drooling just thinking back at how good that dinner was.

After dinner, Ahmad serves us some Bedouin tea (it’s really strong and a bit sweet). So much for our promise to avoid liquids! As we’re drinking the tea, one of the Bedouin guides at the nearby camp walks over and invites us to join them for music around the campfire. My sleep deprivation is hitting hard at this point but we agree to join the other camp for a bit. Our companions turn out to be a Korean family who has been traveling for an entire year together. Crazy!

Their guide (whose name has since escaped me) sang some hilarious Arabic and Bedouin songs and the Korean dad even contributed a song about how he can’t live without his wife (as translated by her). SO CUTE.

Now it’s officially REALLY COLD so my mom and I decide it’s time to cozy up in our tent. We scurry away from the camp to brush our teeth and go to the bathroom, giggling at the fact that we are in the middle of the Egyptian desert in January, all thanks to me. I’m actually exhausted at this point, so I have no problem falling asleep. Surprisingly, the tent combined with our four blankets is really warm, and I sleep like a baby.

The next morning we wake up to a beautiful sunrise, looking more than a little worse for wear. Sunrise at the White Desert is breathtaking, though. After breakfast, Ahmad and Mido take apart the tent and we start the drive back to Cairo.

On to the review part:

I loved my experience with Egypt Tailor Made and cannot say enough good things about the company. They were professional and organized, and my guide, Mido, answered all my questions about Egypt, the deserts and more. He took a ton of photos for us and never rushed us to the next stop. Plus, he made sure we were comfortable at all times.

I had arranged the tour directly with the owner of the company, Walid, and he called on our drive back to Cairo to make sure everything went smoothly. A+ for customer service.

The only thing I would have done differently would have been to ask for more details about the camp. I mistakenly assumed we would be at a campsite, and probably would have planned a little better had I known we wouldn’t be glamping.

  Other things to note:

There won’t be any phone signal once you start heading into the desert. Plan accordingly.

Bring warm clothing. Even though it’s warm during the day, it’s surprisingly cold at night.

If you can, plan your trip for spring or fall to avoid cold winds and chilly nights.

If you’re female and squatting isn’t your thing, invest in a SheWee. Also, don’t forget toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

Bring snacks if you tend to get hungry during the day! You can also buy snacks at the rest stop but they’re mostly junk food.

I sat my keys down next to the door and saw the empty lipstick sample sitting there. I said “Mom, is this the lipstick you wanted me to order for you?” Of which she replied, “Yes, please! I didn’t want to lose the name of it!” I smiled and opened up my app to add it to my order.

Lennon Stella came home to kick off her Love, Me Tour this week, with two sold-out shows. The Danforth Music Hall was packed for the emerging pop star, and there was a buzz in the air.

The GTA native came north of the border to start the tour, share her songs, and look out into a sea of people on Tuesday night. Two hours before she hit the stage, fans were lined up down the street and around the corner, and 15 minutes after the doors opened, they were a dozen rows deep in front of the stage. They were excited, they were ready, and they weren’t the only ones.

As the clock ticked closer to the show, the seats in the balcony started to fill and more and more ticket holders found their spot in the general admission floor. The assembled audience was so ready that they let out a cheer when Lennon’s dad popped out onto the dark stage to take a photo of the crowd.

And then, when Toronto alt-pop act, Valley came out to open the show, they cheered again, louder than before.

The four-piece band brought plenty of their own energy to the stage, matching the crowd and playing songs from The Room Is White and MAYBE – Side A to get things going. The set was tight, with lots of movement, lights, enthusiasm from the group. And on the floor, there was dancing and grooving and moving as The Danforth got into it.

Based on their social media posts following the show, Valley is pumped to be on the Love, me Tour, and if the show on Tuesday night was any indication of how the rest of the run is going to go, things are going to be pretty great.

If you missed them, accept this as our recommendation to see them the next time you have a chance. Get to the front to take it all in up close, or find a spot that gives you some space to dance. Either way, you’ll be a winner.

That brought us to the main event of the evening. The woman that the sold-out crowd had been waiting for in the building, lined up for on the street and buzzed about online. And if someone had asked, “how well can night one of someone’s first headlining tour go?”, the answer would be, not much better than this.

The former star of TV’s Nashville owned the stage from moment one, with confidence (but not cockiness) that showed everyone that she knew what she was doing, and she was ready for her moment. It’s an important piece of the puzzle, her being ready. Because stepping out in front of a full house that came for you, and knowing that you’re prepared for it is not easy, especially for a young artist. So when Lennon Stella sang with talent and poise well beyond her 19 and a half years of age, she set the tone for the night, the tour, and whatever comes next.

Comparisons are a big part of music. Listeners want to find artists to add to their playlists that fit with what they’re already into. So when you read this next bit, remember that we’re not trying to say that Lennon is a copy of any of these artists, we’re saying she’s a comp and a good fit.

In watching her perform, listening to her music, and thinking about songs like Polaroid, La Di Da, Bad, and BITCH (takes one to know one), a few names starting coming to mind. Taylor Swift’s run in pop music, polished and purposeful, with singer-songwriter chops underneath was there. Kacey Musgraves’ High Horse popped into my head, and I started imagining Lennon laying down a cover of the 6-time Grammy winner’s hit. And you can continue on down the line with stars like Ariana, Demi, etc., whose voices are powerful and talented and set the bar in pop music.

Lennon also controlled the tempo of the show, slowing things down with an acoustic version of Polaroid, followed by a cover of Cyndi Lauper’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun while she played the keyboard. As she introduced the acoustic performance, she made a quip about turning it into a slow, sad song, because that’s what she does best. It was a nod to her foundation as an artist, and proof that the song is a jam because Polaroid 100% worked as a stripped-down singer-songwriter track.

As the show went on, the Toronto crowd seemed to be more and more involved. They were dancing all over the GA floor. They sang along in a way that a lot of artists dream about early in their careers. And it feels like they set the bar pretty high for the rest of the Love, me Tour.

Toronto fans also gave a loud cheer when Lennon’s Nashville co-star and younger sister, Maisy joined her on stage for a cover of MGMT’s Kids. It may not have been completely unexpected, but that did not stop the audience from losing their minds when she was introduced, and giving a scream of approval and excitement when she started singing.

Lennon Stella was a star long before the announced the Love, me Tour. Fans embraced and fell in love with her 2018 EP of the same name. They buy and stream and sing her songs. They know her from TV, and some have been following her career since the Call Your Girlfriend video hit YouTube almost seven years ago.

Tuesday night in Toronto she proved it all to be real, legit and deserved. Lennon Stella walked on stage and owned The Danforth Music Hall – and we’re ready for her to do the exact same thing for a long time to come.

Website Speed Guide

Do you know how slow your site loads?

Website speed needs to be a top priority for all websites in 2019. Why?

Just a one-second delay in loading time results in:

16% decrease in customer satisfaction

11% fewer page views

7% loss in conversions

Amazon says that one second of load lag time would cost them $1.6 billion in sales each year.

So, how fast should your website load? 47% of people say they expect pages to load in two seconds or less and 64% of mobile users expect sites to load in less than four seconds. However, the average loading times for various industries in the United States don’t meet those benchmarks. Take a look at this research from Google:

As you can see, the average website speed for all of these industries is significantly higher than the best practices line.

If you can speed up your website, it will give you a huge advantage over your competitors with slower loading times. You’ll want to aim for your pages to load in three seconds or less. That’s because 40% of visitors will abandon sites that haven’t loaded within three seconds. But obviously, the lower you can get that number, the better.

OK, now that you understand why website speed is so important, it’s time to do something about it. I created this guide of best practices that will help you speed up your website.

So read carefully and make any necessary changes to your site moving forward. Don’t be intimidated by any technical terms that you’re unfamiliar with — I’ve done my best to explain everything in plain English, so it’s easy for everyone to follow along.

Minimize your HTTP requests

HTTP requests are made for each element on your website. I’m referring to things like images, scripts, and stylesheets.

Research shows that 80% of website loading time is related to downloading on-page elements. So for those of you who have lots of these components on your website, you have more HTTP requests.

Using your developer tools settings, you can figure out how many requests your website currently makes. Then, take steps lower that number. Reduce clutter on your website and simplify the design.

You should also eliminate unnecessary redirects. While these are often needed for fixing broken links, they create additional HTTP requests. This will slow down your website speed.

I’d recommend using a tool like Screaming Frog to help you identify all of your redirects. Once they’ve been identified, get rid of the ones that you can live without. Only keep the ones that are absolutely necessary.

Reduce the time to first byte (TTFB)

TTFB refers to the time browsers need to wait before getting data from the server. Simply put, it’s basically how long it takes for a page to start loading.

Your TTFB is comprised of three elements:

HTTP request time

Process request time

Response time

Here’s a visual representation showing how the time to first byte works.

If your website has a fast TTFB, then requests can be delivered to the browser faster. Ultimately, this gets your content loaded for visitors faster.

You should be aiming for a TTFB that’s less than 200ms. Use WebPageTest as a resource to identify your time to first byte.

Just look at the “first byte” column to see where you stand. For those of you who have a TTFB that exceeds 200ms, you’ll need to take steps to improve that number. Here are some common issues associated with slow TTFB:

One of the best ways to reduce your TTFB is by enabling browser caching. Make note of that — we’ll discuss how to execute on that concept in greater detail later in this guide.

Make sure your web hosting plan meets your needs

Cheaper isn’t always better. When your website was new, you might have gone with a budget hosting plan to keep costs low. However, as your traffic increases, you’ll need to make sure that your hosting plan is upgraded.

There are four types of web hosting:

Shared hosting

VPS hosting

Dedicated server

Cloud hosting

The plan you choose and the company you use will impact your website speed. Rather than spending all day discussing the pros and cons of these hosting options, it’s in your best interest to review my guide on everything you need to know about web hosting.

This will give you the information needed to choose the best web host that will speed up your website.

Run compression audits

In order for your website to be as fast as possible, you need all of your files to be as small as they can possibly be. Just make sure that you’re not sacrificing quality, of course.

Smaller files load faster — it’s as simple as that.

I’d recommend running a compression audit with a tool like GIDNetwork to give you a better idea of how compressed files can speed up your website. Here’s what the audit looks like for Quick Sprout.

To test your website, all you need to do is enter the URL and click “check.” As you can see from this audit, Quick Sprout isn’t compressed. The tool also offers a “what if analysis” to show you the benefits of compressing your website.

This chart shows what my website would look like at different compression levels. It tells me that at the fourth level of compression, the size can be compressed to 131 bytes compared to 178 with no compression. The download would also improve from 0.12 seconds to .09 seconds.

These numbers are pretty marginal for my website, which is why I don’t currently have compression enabled. However, some of you might learn that your site can greatly benefit from compressed files after running this audit.

Which brings me to our next point . . .

Compress your files

Let’s say your compression audit looked something like this.

There is a huge difference between no compression and the first level. Those figures continue to improve as we reach level five.

In this scenario, you’d absolutely want to enable compression. Gzip is the industry standard for this practice.

This software locates lines of similar code and then replaces them to make all of your files smaller. It’s ideal for HTML and CSS since those files tend to have lots of whitespace and repetitive code.

Studies from Yahoo say that Gzip compression can reduce response sizes by 70%.

Reduce your images sizes

Visual elements are necessary on your website. Without images, your site will look boring, unprofessional, and probably untrustworthy.

But with that said, images can really slow down your loading times. That’s a big problem for some of you, especially for ecommerce businesses. Why? Well, consider this.

Some of you may have even more than three images per product. Now multiply that number by how many items are available on your website. The figures add up quickly.

Even websites that don’t sell anything need to reduce their image sizes. The average blog post has 3.2 images.

Use a tool like Compressor.io to help you compress your images without sacrificing the quality of them. After the images are compressed, you’ll want to make sure that you’re saving them as the right file type.

For the most part, JPG will be your best option. You can use PNG files for graphics that need to have precise detail, like a logo.

Minify and combine files

Each file on your website will increase the time it takes for a page to load. If your pages have lots of files, they will require additional HTTP requests, which we discussed earlier.

But you can’t just go through and eliminate everything. Then your website will be left with nothing. Instead, just minify and combine them. You can do this for:

HTML files

CSS files

JavaScript files

Google Fonts

Minification removes unnecessary characters from your files, such as formatting and white space. Basically, it will get rid of anything that isn’t required for your code to function. This ultimately reduces your file sizes.

Combining files reduces the number of HTTP requests by concentrating them into smaller groups. For example, a browser can potentially download six smaller files faster than one giant file.

If you have a WordPress website, your best option is the WP Rocket plugin. This will definitely improve your website speed.

Use asynchronous loading

Now that your CSS and JavaScript files are minified and combined, it’s time for you to optimize the way they get loaded. There are two options:

Synchronous loading

Asynchronous loading

Files that load synchronously load one at a time, based on their location on the page. The problem with this is that if one file is taking longer to load, no other files will get loaded until that particular file is complete.

With asynchronous loading, files can load simultaneously. In the event of a file taking a while to load, other elements of your page can still load without any delay.

You can use the same WP Rocket plugin to enable this as well.

Just navigate to the Static Files tab and check off the option for asynchronous loading, as shown above.

You’ll also see from this screenshot that “Load JS files deferred” is also checked off. This brings me to another best practice for website speed.

Defer loading for JavaScript files

When you defer a file, it means that you stop it from loading until other elements on the page have loaded. By deferring a large file, it helps ensure that the rest of your files load quickly without any problems.

JavaScript files are large and can be deferred.

As I just showed above, it’s easy to accomplish this with just one click if you’re using a plugin like WP Rocket. Otherwise, you’ll have to insert some code into the </body> tag for JS files. It will look something like this:

Personally, I like to avoid manual coding at all costs. So finding a plugin or tool that can do the work for you is definitely easier.

Improve DNS lookups

DNS is short for “domain name system.” This is a server that has a database of IP addresses along with names of various hosts.

When a user types a URL into their browser, the DNS server translates the URL into an IP address, indicating its online location.

Typing the name of a website URL into your browser doesn’t mean much to your computer; it needs to be translated to find the site that you want to reach. Here’s a visual representation of what this looks like, using ubnt.com as the example.

With a DNS lookup, people don’t need to memorize long strings of number combinations. However, sometimes this takes too long.

If your DNS lookup time is too slow, you should look into switching to a new DNS provider that will give you faster service.

Make sure browser caching is enabled

I talked about browser caching earlier when we were discussing TTFB. If you’re not familiar with how caching works, I’ll quickly explain.

Whenever someone visits a new website, all of the elements need to be loaded. These elements get stored in a cache, which is a temporary storage on their hard drive. The next time they go to that website, their browser can load that page without sending an additional HTTP request to the server.

If you have caching enabled, then your website speed will be faster for returning visitors. Check out my list of the best WordPress cache plugins to get this set up on your website.

Install a content delivery network (CDN)

As you know, your website is hosted on a server. Every time someone visits your site, a request gets sent to that server. So if you’re experiencing high levels of traffic, requests will take longer to process, which will slow down your website for these users.

But high traffic is a good thing for your website. The last thing you want is for this surge in visitors to deter those same people from coming back because your website speed is too slow.

The physical location of a user to your server can also impact how fast your website is for them. People who are farther away from the server will experience slower loading times, even if you aren’t having high volumes of traffic at that time.

Content delivery networks solve that problem.

CDNs cache your website on networks of global servers. So when someone requests a file from your website, it gets routed to the server closest to their physical location.

For example, let’s say your origin server is located in Texas, but you’re using a CDN to host your files across the world. If a user in China navigates to your website, their browser can download files from a server somewhere else that’s nearby.

Venture Harbour ran some tests on five pages on their website after they implemented a CDN. These were the results:

Page 1 — 20% faster

Page 2 — 37% faster

Page 3 — 41% faster

Page 4 — 4% faster

Page 5 — 51% faster

It’s worth noting that the page that was 4% faster went from 2.06s to 1.97s, so it was already fast to begin with. Overall, Venture Harbour experienced a 30.2% decrease in loading time across their entire website. That’s a huge improvement.

I’d recommend using Cloudflare or StackPath (formerly MaxCDN) to help you set up your content delivery network.

Host videos on external platforms

Videos can definitely add lots of value to your website. In fact, 64% of consumers are more likely to buy products online if they can watch a video about it.

But videos on your website can slow down your loading times if they’re not properly optimized. Let me explain what I mean.

Let’s say you filmed a product demonstration video that you want to add to your website. How do you approach this?

If you’re planning to upload the video directly to your website through a file transfer protocol (FTP) or your WordPress editor, it’s the wrong approach. Doing this means the video will get hosted on your server, which will take up tons of space. Look at how this compares to other file types.

For those of you who are using a shared hosting plan, you’ll be limited in the amount of space you can use. Adding videos to your website this way will push your limits. This can also hinder the user experience. Assuming multiple people want to watch a video simultaneously, servers with limited bandwidth will cause lagging and stoppages throughout the playback.

Instead, upload your videos to a third-party platform, like YouTube.

That platform will host your video; then you can simply embed the video on your website. This method will save you server space and speed up your website.

Uninstall unused plugins

Plugins are a great way to improve the performance of your website. There’s a plugin for nearly everything you can imagine.

I use them as well, and they tend to make my life much easier.

With that said, too many plugins can make your website heavy and slow down your loading times. So it’s in your best interest to only install plugins that you’re actually going to use.

When searching for a plugin, look for all-in-one solutions so you don’t need to get one for every little feature. For example, say you’re looking for the best social media WordPress plugin. Rather than getting one plugin for Instagram, one plugin for Facebook, and one plugin for Twitter, look for one that supports all of these platforms.

Go through your plugins and get rid of ones that you aren’t using. These could potentially be slowing down your website.

Conclusion

The importance of website speed can’t be overstated. Page loading times can make or break the success of your site.

You can’t just launch a website and forget about it. Your loading speed needs to be monitored on a regular basis. Otherwise, you’ll have no way of knowing where you stand, and what needs to be improved.

So what’s it take to have a fast website in 2019?

There isn’t just one thing you can do. Start by following the list of best practices that I’ve identified above.

Don’t get overwhelmed. It’s unrealistic to implement all of these tactics overnight. Start with one or two and work your way down the list.

It was typical of me: I had small money in my account, so instead of going to the village to spend my “Nigerian summer,” I visited Lagos.

We all know that if you visit Lagos and you don’t visit Lagos Island market, you might have as well have stayed back where you came from. (Hello IG sellers, I see you.)

So this fateful Friday, my friend Chinny offered to show me around the market. If she had left me alone ehn, I would have just broken down inside that market and cry so tey e fit cause flood. You can’t blame a JJC.

I was scared after my friend read the rules and regulations of the market to me, even though it wasn’t my first time. I already knew I wanted to buy a denim skirt, one trouser, three tops, and then cups for my Oriyoke Parfait, so we had specific places we were going to. No aimless walking around looking for who wasn’t looking for me. I withdrew money and we entered the market.

As soon as we got in, people started dragging me up and down to buy this and that. I wanted to tell one to get his unsanitary hands off my recently scrubbed skin. Body products don’t come cheap oo! But let us thank God for the gift of the Holy Spirit, who whispered to me to just ignore and use chicken-feather-removing hot water to shower when I get home. I obeyed, let myself be dragged. At least fine boys were dragging me, use your single mind to interpret. I finally felt how Charles Inojie did when he said: We fine boys no dey too follow woman, na dem dey rush us, na dem dey rush us oooo.

We made our way to Chinny’s aunt’s shop to ask for directions to where we could get cups. Next thing, one lady stormed the shop opposite, raging. I swear, if I had moved closer, I would have seen steam pouring through her nose and ears. She was raining profanities on the shop owner. What was his sin? He gave her a wrong suit size for the page boy and the wedding was the next day. The man gently told her, “Aunty, please stop shouting.” And what did she do? This aunty changed from gear one to gear five. That’s how the shop owner too changed it for her. He gave it back to her hotter, locked his shop and left.

We left there shortly after so I don’t know how they settled their issue. But I prayed he changed the suit back, if only for the little boy’s sake. Imagine him wearing agbada as a suit. The damage the pictures would do to his big boy reputation in the future. I don’t want to imagine oo.

I hung my bag around my neck but still held it tight in front of me. Everything about me screamed JJC as we made our way through the crowd, rubbing bodies with everyone and praying to the Almighty God that I don’t get scabies. We got to the plastic place and I priced the cups. It was ₦2,500 cheaper than I bought it from Uche in Enugu. Mr Uche Cup, when I get back, I will use your head to wash the back of party jollof pot. Just wait for me. Because I used the money for my denim skirt to buy more cups just so I won’t see you in a very long time.

As we were heading out, we saw the ‘bend down select’ with a Ph.D. The clothes were ironed and hung on racks all of them sold for ₦1,000. It was like a street boutique: innovation, and packaging at its best. I quickly went there and started picking clothes because nne m they were fine. And since abroad wasn’t calling my name, I had to make do with my own version of Saks Fifth Avenue.

Two hot chics with enviable bodies and faces that had slay plastered across them joined us to pick through the clothes. One of them took out a top, removed it from the polythene bag, aka Ph.D. graduation gown, looked at it, then crumpled it and put on the rack. The seller went berserk! “Come, this girl, why you rumple that top like that if you know sey you no wan buy?” The girl made a rude remark and the man just rushed her. I swear.

At this point, I knew fine girl fine girl couldn’t save her life. So I tried to stop him. If you see the way he flung my hand, it almost came off the joint. The people around told me to leave him, let him beat the devil out of her. Luckily, he restrained himself, but only after pouring venom all over her. I just imagined her getting slapped across her yellow face and the story she would have posted on her lit Instagram. I doubt she would have given Balogun ‘bend down select’ seller credit for the slap. Out of fear, I paid for everything I was holding. My brother, I didn’t want any trouble.

Unfortunately for me, I pushed someone’s wares down when we were very close to the car. It felt like my village people just wanted to get me in trouble because I didn’t spend my holiday with them. Dear villagers, is it where I am crushing palm fruits with my bare feet and sweeping the compound and singing village songs that I will find a husband before December?

I almost fell on the ground apologizing. The owner didn’t understand why I was begging like that. He said something in Yoruba and the lady beside him laughed. They asked me to go. I hope they said I was a well- mannered girl sha.

My home training almost left me when I asked a man for jeggings and he said he didn’t have big size. Chim! When did I become big size? I wanted to change it for him, call him ‘Omuti.’ But I remembered I was still inside Lagos Island market and I wasn’t allowed to have an attitude because anything can happen. Also, all the cake and jollof rice I had been eating since I got to Lagos had to show somehow. I had to let it slide after giving him uppercut in my mind.

It was a fun day in the market, looking at all the wares and pointing out to my friend the things I had seen on Instagram. Hi IG sellers again, in case you missed my first hello. Kimbit

                The sky was filled with gray clouds and it looked like it was going to rain any minute. As we walked outside the air was humid and felt sticky. The grass was wet from the rain the night before, so we walked on the road. There is only one main road that runs through the Florida Keys, so we had to be careful of the cars rushing by. After a couple blocks of walking we arrived at a dirt road with a sign pointed towards the ocean that said Dolphin Cove.

                My friend Kayleigh loved science and had convinced me to go on the Splash into Science trip for school it was a trip to Florida and for the most part it sounded like we would just sit by the ocean, so I couldn’t pass it up. The trip was okay a lot more science and then I thought. We learned about the environment in Florida and how things like pollution and nature destroy can affect it. Every new place that we went we had to sit through a long speech. Usually about why whatever we were about to see had been destroyed and why it was important to save it form more destruction. I thought most of it was boring. On the second to last day of our trip one of the things we were going to do was swim with dolphins.

                After arriving at Dolphin Cove, we walked up the long dirt road to a small white building. The teachers rushed us to get in the building and sit down. When we were all sitting down a women dress in a wet suit got up and started talking to us about the dolphins. She told us about each dolphin, the biggest dolphin they had there was a Dolphin named Kimbit. After telling us about each dolphin she explained to us the dangers that dolphins face such as pollution and dolphin hunting in different parts of the world. Once we were done talking about safety while swimming with the dolphins we went outside and got dressed in out wet suits.

                There was a long silver dock that shock a little when you walked out on to it. Under the dock was the ocean which looked green. At the end of the dock there were huge nets blocking off the rest of the ocean, so the dolphins couldn’t get out. We stood on the dock as we were instructed to get into the water. The water was freezing soon after we were in the water the instructor blew her whistle. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a large gray dolphin. The dolphin swam next to me and waited for the instructor to give it a treat. The instructor blew her whistle again and the dolphin turned to me with its fins out of the water. The instructor told me to shake hands with the dolphin I will be swimming with today his name was Kimbit. Kimbit was huge he was eight feet long and weight five hundred pounds. Kimbit felt like sandpaper. For the next twenty minutes I saw around with Kimbit doing tricks with him. The last trick that I did with Kimbit was were I had to float on my back and Kimbit put his nose to my feet and pushed me from one dock to another. After getting out of the water everyone was standing on a big dock watching the people who were still swimming with the dolphins.

                When we were done at Dolphin Cove we walked a couple more blocks up the main road to get lunch. The sun had come up and it was turning out to be a nice day in Florida. On the walk I thought to myself how much fun I had with the dolphins. I realized that the only reason I had the opportunity to swim with dolphins was because someone really cared about giving though dolphins a healthy life. I thought back to all the long speeches that we had listened to on the trip so far and even though I thought they were boring they were important. Swimming with dolphins made me realize how important protecting the environment and wildlife really was.
