...I seriously cannot stress how much I hate tags like "Give us BAMF Aziraphale" because it seems to imply that he's not badass.

He IS. Tell me how well most people could endure 6000 years of consistent, persistent demoralization, harassment and shitty treatment without snapping?

Do you know how HARD it is to be kind when you've been put through a system that actively discourages kindness and softness, a system that tries to beat it out of you - not physically, but still. The fact that Aziraphale got through all of that and is not just still kind, but still has the capacity to be kind to the very people who hurt him, is fucking remarkable.

Aziraphale is badass. Period. Full Stop.

It's well past time that we stopped equating physical and fighting prowess as a measure of badassery. Just about anyone can exercise and get strong enough to fight someone. Just about anyone could possibly get weapons training. Neither of these things is half as brave as putting yourself in front of a crowd of people and holding off 70 demons with just conviction and a candleholder because it's the RIGHT THING TO DO.

EDIT: I had to add this while I was thinking of it.

I feel like people are buying into Heaven's version of badassery. Angels were made to FIGHT. To fight the last big battle against demons and Hell.

Aziraphale is a deviation because he DOES NOT WANT THAT. He doesn't want to fight a war that will hurt billions and destroy the world. His defining moment in Season 1 is when he stands in the face of the quartermaster and refuses to fight the way they want him to. Instead of a weapon, he chooses to find another way.

If anything, I would think it's leading to the idea that Aziraphale feels he must fight, that he has no choice, and then, when it comes right down to it, finding another way. A kinder way. A BETTER way.

By the standards of Heaven, Aziraphale picking up his sword and fighting would be Normal. Him refusing and finding another way is what makes him Unique. THAT'S what makes him badass.

Thoughts on Bertha Russell (Many Thoughts)

I am So curious about Bertha Russell's backstory. We have little snippets:

Her father was a potato farmer.

She has lots of mommy issues. (George mentions her mother said she was the only child "worthy of her dreams" to which Bertha angrily responds that her mother's dreams were worthless because she died with nothing which is A Lot)

She has sibling issues. (George offers to invite her sister to a thing and she refuses)

She and George met when they were both poor, they made the fortune together.

She had a distinct learning curve when they first got to New York. She bought The Wrong House and made The Wrong Friends and had to learn and relearn things over a period of years. (I am especially interested about this time, because she would know Nothing, being the ultimate outsider, but she is a tactical genius and viciously ambitious...I want to see young!Bertha in the early stages of the struggle before she knows how to dress/talk/act).

I hope we will learn more about her because more than any of the other characters she wants things. Things that are nebulous, but she doesn't seem to realize are nebulous, because she has clear goals but they don't satisfy her so she has to make another goal. Loving husband doing well? Not enough. They have enough money to hear the call of the guillotine? It's not enough, they need status. They have status? Not enough, they need to beat Lina Astor. Now they've beaten Lina Astor, but I don't think anyone thinks that's going to be enough. George points out multiple times that he is content where he is and content to let their children marry for love to people of what Bertha considers middling station. She's the sole driving force for continued social climbing. And it doesn't matter how high they get, she wants to go higher, she wants to go "all the way" but there isn't an all the way unless I guess you're Empress of the World. But then the moon starts looking awfully conquerable.

She claims she's doing it for their children, but both children have said her suggestions aren't what they want. And it is heavily implied she just sold her only daughter to the Duke so he would attend an opera performance. She wants Gladys to marry the Duke so that she will be grandmother to English nobility. It's for her. So she is willing to use her children, her alleged motivation, as pawns. They aren't her real motivation after all, even if she may think they are. I do think she loves her children and George. I also think that she thinks she's helping Gladys, but I also think there's a limit to that love because it exists beside the yawning void of hunger within her psyche. George outright asks her if his love for her is enough to make her happy early in s1, because her love is enough for him. She says it's "almost enough" and that's significant and enough for him, which is telling, when usually any answer other than "yes of course" would be taken by a love interest as a searing betrayal. Anyway, the point is, her kids/her family are, at least, not her entire motivation and might not factor into her motivation at all, if she is fully honest with herself.

So, the hunger. The call to Rise. The rage that has her hyperventilating in bed alone after her failed party instead of crying in her husband's arms like most television characters would do. The instinct to look upon a room of people and think you will all bow to me you sniveling mortals. Why is it there? Like...why is she Like This? I think some of it has to come from what we can learn just from George's comment about impossibly ambitious, ruthless, low empathy Bertha being the only one "worthy of her mother's dreams." Which means her mother had dreams that were very important to her and that she never achieved. Her mother also guarded said dreams and judged her children harshly, we know Bertha has at least one sister, who is apparently judged not worthy in the eyes of her own mother. We know Bertha does not like talking about this and tries to dismiss it. Was there pressure on Bertha to be worthy? When could that have started and how did it manifest? Circling back to my interest in young!Bertha in NY, if the social rejection was bad in s1, it was probably worse then, and constant social failures would have made her angrier and more determined to both to become the queen of New York society and to see it burn. This is all stuff I want to learn more about in season 3.

HERE IS WHERE I PRETTY MUCH JUST DO PREDICTIONS (WHICH MAY BE TINFOIL, IDK):

Because I think we will finally get to see Bertha Russell: Season Villain. Every season needs a villain, and Bertha has pretty much vanquished all of them. The first couple seasons the overarching villain has been New York Society with its inequalities and pointless social cruelty, if that holds, Bertha is now the head of that system, having beaten Lina Astor and set herself up as the queen. Additionally, side opponents (not really villains) like Agnes also aren't in a position to make major problems for the protagonists because the Van Rhijn household is now the Forte household and cinnamon roll Ada is now in charge. Unless Agnes attempts to usurp her sister in a subplot (which I don't think will happen except for maybe one episode of hijinx) she's not in a powerful spot. The Society character is indisputably Bertha. And Bertha has been up to some serious villain shit. If she did agree to marry Gladys to the Duke, she's now against All the Protagonists---a sure sign of villain status. She's even against her husband, who swore to back Gladys in her choice of love match, and Gladys doesn't like the Duke. If Gladys wants out, Larry will almost certainly help her. And Saint Marian will help Larry either for love reasons or moral reasons, and hopefully Peggy has better things to do but she will probably get dragged into it somehow and if Marian's involved Ada's also involved and you see where this is going.

Also, show pacing wise, Bertha is due for a loss. I love her and I want her to win everything and be declared Empress of Earth and Moon but realistically that isn't going to happen. In a show where villains lose, it checks out. Gladys isn't going to marry the Duke, and if she does, everyone is going to regret it. One reason I think we will learn more about Bertha and her history is because if she loses she's going to Lose It. Dramatic monologue style. When she had a party and no one came she swore eternal vengeance and spent the night Angry Breathing and presumably fantasizing about the Red Wedding. She doesn't handle losing well. A big public loss after achieving every status symbol she could think of would probably break her mind, and she'll probably tell whoever she's talking to (probably George) enough backstory info that we the audience can fill in stuff. This is also where I would guess she and George would reconcile where he would see she is the person he loves and has not transformed into an automaton, she's just Messed Up, which he always knew and loved so he is Back In.

IN CONCLUSION:

This is who Marina was writing about. She is a primadonna girl, and all she ever wanted was the world. She cannot help that she needs it all, in this case the primadonna life: both the rise and the fall. She also knows exactly what she wants and who she wants to be. This is why she walks and talks like a machine. Unfortunately, she is becoming a self-fulfilled prophecy.

Supernatural fic writers, I've got this idea and it won't leave me alone. I've never used tumblr before and I haven't even finished the damn show yet (on season 9) but this idea bitch slapped my ADHD, clutched my attention span by the balls, and worked it like a slave, Lincoln be damned.

it’s Dean Winchester, obviously. But not just any Dean Winchester— specifically protective older brother edition who can be gentle to his loved ones but never to himself. Determined Dean Winchester who doesn’t want to blame his dad for how shitty he turned out but wants to nurture his little brother to turn out better. My darling Dean Winchester who is so unfamiliar with love that all he can do is protect, protect, protect and hope that his kids will get it—kids being Sam, Adam, Charlie, Kevin, and Ben in this case. 

So yeah this is an AU situation. No monsters and everyone(?) knows each other and it's cute and stuff. It even features Benny being an awesome bestie, which I love to sink my teeth into. And also Destiel. I may be new gen but I'm cultured and queer and neurodivergent and that equates to "obsessed with Castiel's devotion to Dean Winchester" because I, too, can't be normal about humans I adore.

ANYWAY---

I’m thinking something like that movie Daddy Day Care but they're all dumb kids. Here's the outline I shat out in half an hour: 

John Winchester is practically missing, as he usually is, and so Dean takes on the task of being Sam’s primary caretaker. At this point they’re 12 and 16 years old.

Lisa (Dean’s ex-girlfriend, 19 y/o single mom, dumped him as soon as she found out he was underage; they never slept together) calls Dean and asks him to babysit Ben while Lisa goes out on a date. Dean agrees because he’s a softie and kind of a pushover. (Don’t tell him I said that.)

About 15 minutes after Lisa drops Ben (toddler) off at the house, Bobby calls Dean freaking out. Turns out John was supposed to pick up Adam, the Winchester boys’ younger half-brother, at the airport. Adam flew in from Minnesota for his biannual father-son time. But instead, Bobby has to ask Ellen to pick the kid up, and then Dean babysits him, too. 

Before Ellen left to get Adam, she was in a heated argument with her 11-year-old daughter, Jo. When Ellen has to leave for the airport, Jo refuses to go, so Ellen sends her to Bobby’s. Instead of going to Bobby’s, though, Jo goes to the Winchesters’ place and becomes yet another brat (/affectionate) for Dean to look after.

At this point, Dean decides to phone a friend. Benny swoops in to save the day, and shockingly, he’s great with kids. 

When Charlie rolls in, she initially tells Dean she snuck out because she got grounded for being on her computer too long. But later she reveals she ran away after her mom found her kissing another girl in her bedroom. Dean asks how her mom responded and if she’s safe, and Charlie admits she didn’t hang around long enough to find out, too scared of the possibility of a bad outcome. Dean texts Charlie’s mom and tells her the girl is fine and will be home tomorrow. Yay!! Sleepover!! :)   

Kevin joins the fray when his girlfriend breaks up with him. He’s reluctant to confide in Dean but ends up doing so anyway because his mom hates the fact that he got a girlfriend in the first place, considering he’s only 13 and should be focusing on his studies or whatever. Kevin stays for dinner and movie night, and yeah, Dean cheers him up. 

Benny cooks, and it’s amazing, but there’s a vampire joke somewhere. Lurking. Very meta, no fuckerberg.

It’s about here that Dean is feeling thoroughly overwhelmed, fearing he has bitten off more than he can chew. In the middle of the chaos—Jo teasing Kevin, Sam trying to fight Benny, baby Ben crying, Charlie playing her music too loud—there’s a knock on the door. Pissed off, Dean storms up and rips it open, ready to send whoever it is home crying. However, the open door reveals Castiel, Dean’s crush—who he’s been avoiding because Cas accidentally, obliviously confessed his undying love for Dean, the captain of the wrestling team, at the stupid ass high school mathletes tournament of all places, jesus christ—and Dean melts into a puddle. 

Immediately Cas is trying to apologize because he didn’t know that he wasn’t supposed to say he loved Dean, even though he did, and he does, and he doesn’t know why, but he does, and he tried to ask his dad, the pastor, but it turns out boys can’t like boys at all, so, yeah, maybe there is something wrong with Cas, but he still likes Dean, and he didn’t mean to embarrass him or make him uncomfortable or ruin their friendsh—

Dean kisses him, and the whole circus behind him shuts up. Cas spends the night, and in the morning when Ellen and Bobby come to wake the Winchester boys up, they find all the kids asleep and half-cuddling in the living room. 

Additional notes: 

I haven’t finished the show yet, so that sucks (give me a week, I've got this) but more importantly, I haven’t met Jack Kline. Or Claire Novak, but that's not as big of a deal. So I guess I’ll have to wait to integrate them. Or, y’know, if someone else picks up writing this... squeeze those darlings in pretty pleaseeeee....

I also wanted to include Jess because I love the idea of Dean teasing Sam and his first girlfriend. Also Jess and Sam warm my heart so there’s that, too.
