L.J. Smith (1958-2025)

It is with a heavy heart I share L.J. Smith has passed away.

Very sad to hear about the passing of L. J. Smith.

She was the author of The Vampire Diaries, The Secret Circle, Night World, and more... books that were a big part of my teen years. When I was 16, I even won a fan art contest she ran on her website.

In her memory, I decided to redraw one of my old illustrations from that contest—Kaitlyn Fairchild, a character haunted by her ability to predict the (often tragic) future through her drawings, from the book Dark Visions. Her stories were filled with great characters, and I loved getting lost in the worlds she crafted. She’ll be sorely missed.

RIP, L. J. Smith.

Hi friends, I hate sharing this news especially after we just started hearing more information lately but our dear LJ Smith has passed.

I also have no idea if the contest that just ended will receive anymore information related to it, but her website did update to provide a guide to the Night World books with a PDF that does contain a “coming soon”. This was posted since her death announcement as well.

I will keep this blog updating when I hear more news, but in the meantime please send thoughts, prayers, and good vibes to LJ and her family. Thank you for letting us peek into the Night World.

TVD Stans are so dismissive with Bonnies trauma. Why are you expecting her to show mercy to people who have done her wrong???? Then try to gaslight Bonnie stans into thinking that her actions in retaliation to people causing her trauma aren't justified. WHAT????

Isekai Klaroline?

Here me out, a witch coven is attacking Mystic Falls again, using doppelgänger blood to open up a portal (in this au Elena is human and Katherine is not—also no cure plotline) and the witches used both Katherine and Elena’s blood to do it. Elijah, Caroline, and Stefan made the plan to save them, getting Rebekah and Klaus involved at the last minute. Rebekah says she is more so there to aid Stefan (but also for some reason she recognizes the coven and seems frightened—very suspiciously), and Klaus isn’t about to risk his hybrid army.

But the spell goes haywire and sends everyone there including a few dead witches to this other world. One only Rebekah seems to know. It’s suspiciously like the tales of wonderland, and she mentions of course it is, it’s the realm of mirrors, which is where the inspiration came from. She’d know, it’s here fault it exists.

But now the group must team up and find somewhere to get out of Wonderland of all places, and it doesn’t help that Klaus get trapped in the form of his wolf. He’s at least seemingly in control, unlike most werewolves are. Caroline wants to help him, desperately, but also keeps finding her self stroking his fear and taking the prey he finds for her. Elijah teaches her how to head dive so she can talk to him, after she asks, but Elijah has little hope Klaus will allow that, so he teaches her anyways.

Eventually Caroline gets into Klaus’s head.

Elena is worried about being the only human in the group of vampires. But she and Caroline are positive Bonnie will save them.

Rebekah though has a secret. And it’s that in 1607, 200 years after Katherine, she met a coven hoping to speed up the the process of doppelgängers to get on Klaus’s good side; hoping if she does this for him, he will trust her to go on her own for love. It works, and she checks in every few years of this doppelgänger’s upbringing, keeping in a secret, but this doppelgänger is like the rest capable of great kindness and great evil, and she unlike the others a witch. During a mutiny within the coven, she learns the truth about Rebekah, she was raised to be culled, a cow for the slaughter, and her revenge spell meant for Rebekah becomes her escape spell, and Rebekah watches as her gift to Nik disappears into the realm of mirrors, and she never says a thing about it. Never.

But now they are in this dimension, and Rebekah is sure that the queen of hearts must have been inspired by someone, and she dreads the moment everyone discovers her secret.

(The doppelgänger oc would function mostly as an antagonist character, and a fun exploration of doppelgänger lore I think).

rest in peace Lisa Jane Smith. you contributed so much to the world of vampire/monster fiction since well before 2000 and beyond. so many decades of stories. I deeply admire your work, I always will.

you gave us so many favorite characters. so many perspectives from different monsters. so many beautiful love stories. from the vampire diaries (which i refused to read part book 4 because it wasn’t your writing anymore and they did you so dirty) to your night world short stories, to the secret circle books, you’ve had me entranced.

you and your imagination will forever be missed. thank you for getting out one last book i know you worked so diligently on, refusing your illness to prevent you from finishing it. us readers will always be grateful. rest easy LJ, I can’t wait to meet you in a world better than this one ❤️
