What VOCALOID/utaite song fits the sds characters?

This is basically me combining my two biggest interests haha, but yeah I've really thought about this.

Meliodas: Aun no Beats. So from what I've read and what I think the meaning of the lyrics is. It's a person who mourns the death of their lover, and not being able to be together anymore (we all know why this checks out) the line that stuck out to me was "we were going to be together forever" anyway I really like this song and I think it fits him.

Elizabeth: Yume to Hazakura. This is a really beautiful song and its very melancholy. It talks about distant memories and unforgettable words, tbh I think it just fits her vibe. For Meliodas I had like a reason I don't think I have for this one. But it fits her and it's a beautiful song.

Diane: Lonely Universe. It was HARD finding a song fitting her man. But I think this is cute and it's her feelings toward King. It's in my opinion about a person who loses someone (King making Diane forget about him) and waits for them to come back, like they are always looking for something. It also feels like the person waiting is quite alone which Diane was after she left the giants, she didn't have anyone since the humans found her scary.

Ban: Vita. I gotta give my man a depressing song bro. So I can't really find the "meaning" of the song so I'll just make my own conclusions. It says "I'm living as best as I can" and "dying as best as I can" and I feel like that resonates with Bans character, you can't tell me that man doesn't want to die when he deliberately went to prison to get tortured. It also says "it's getting worse and worse" which I feel like Ban felt when he said that everyone he likes ends up leaving him.

King: Lemon. Ya'll I cannot not give King the yaoi angst okay. So the song is about grieving for a loved one, someone who's already passed (Helbram hehe) it has lines which are very beautiful like "Even the pain from that day, I still loved it all with you" and "more than I knew I was in love with you" (if you can't tell I really like King x Helbram) overall the melody of the song fits him too and overall I really frickin love this song.

Gowther: Hitomodoki. This is a mafumafu song (one of my fav artists btw) and Hitomodoki means kinda like Pseudo-human which in of itself fits my boy here. As soon as I listened to this song I thought how much it fit Gowther and I could go on a super long rant, but instead I'm just gonna drop some lyrics on you cause you'll see what I mean. "Is this hole I had mistakenly opened within my heart" and "In this human form, without becoming a human" and "oh, my heart — I once wished that you would have stopped" like you get what I'm putting down??

Merlin: Rollin' Girl. I had so many songs for her, like bitter Choco decoration, bad apple, lost ones weeping etc. But I decided to go with the old classic depression song. Again from what I read and how I interpret it, it's about a girl who's very lonely and needs help but never accepts it from other people. Even though she's in pain she want to keep "rolling" each day at a time (continue to live) she always wants to be perfect/succeed. Lyrics: "it doesn't matter how It turns out, that's just a downward hill towards more mistakes" anyway I feel like this song really fits her. Also this song may or may not have been my most played song last year and Merlin may or may not be my favorite character hehe...

Escanor: The reason I wanted to die (Boku wa shinou to omottetanowa. So as you can see this is a depressing song once again (all these mfs be traumatized) and its a really beautiful song that really shows how Escanor feels in my opinion. It sings about reasons to want to die and it's about grief and despair but also hope. The lyrics "The reason I wanted to die is because I hadn't met you yet" and "I fell in love with this world a little more where people like you were born" feels a bit like his feelings toward Merlin which is cute.

This is honestly mostly for myself but if you enjoy reading all this thats great!!

Anyone who’s followed me for any amount of time knows I am not Rhysands biggest fan, do I hate him? No but never have I ever considered myself a Rhysand Stan at any point . But let me be clear when I say what’s coming next…

Rhysand was absolutely SA’d UTM. He is Amaranthas victim.

It is mentioned how Amarantha used SA to punish Rhysand at times.. One example that he explains in Acomaf….

“Amarantha saw that jealousy. She saw me kissing you to hide the evidence, but she saw why. For the first time, she saw why. So that night, after I left you, I had to … service her.”

Even if you hate Rhysands character this doesn’t take away that this alone is absolutely SA. Not to mention all the other things Amarantha has done to him.

Now on to Cassian…

Everyone likes/dislikes different characters but I truly don’t understand this new wave of ultra extreme hatred for Cassian. This man loved Nesta completely and as she was when everyone else stopped reaching out. He kept reaching out his hand. He helped her, was her first true friend, trained her and loved her completely.

Was he always perfect? No (even thought he’s perfect to me🤣) but neither was Nesta. That is the beauty of Nessian. They are flawed but they love each other completely. They have that gut wrenching passionate healing love. Cassian has such a good heart and genuinely tries to help the ones he loves.

Some people try to say Cassian never defended her against Rhysand but there were times he did. Cassian didn’t defend Nesta when he though she was wrong. What people choose to forget is Nesta does not want someone fighting her battles for her. She doesn’t want Cassian speaking for her or defending her if he feels she is wrong. BUT anytime she is in actual danger Cassian absolutely defends and protects her….

*Acomaf- he literally was crawling to her with broken wings while he was bleeding out before she got thrown in the cauldron

*Acowar- He tries to get her train but she doesn’t want to

When he hears her scream during the battle of Hybern he leaves his legion to get to her

He physically fights the king of Hybern to try to protect her and then is willing to die with her

*Acosf- when she has her nightmare he sits by her bed all night to make sure she’s ok

When she’s kidnapped to the blood rite he is willing to break all the laws to go to her

When he is under mind control by braillyn he turns the knife on himself bc he would rather kill himself then hurt nesta…

*Hofas- When Bryce shows up to return the mask cassian is on the defense.. Bryce sees this and thinks to herself he’s a good mate

(These are all just things I can think off the top of my head I’m sure there is more)

I just think there is this new wave of ultra extreme Nesta Stan’s who pick him apart for everything but then act like Nesta never did anything wrong. Nesta is my favorite acotar character but when people act like she’s perfect and never did anything wrong you take away from the beauty of her journey and growth in Acosf.Cassian was in no way abusive to Nesta. Cassian is our consent King. I love him, Nesta and them together whole heartedly. They are one of my fav bookish couples of all time.

I think some people just need to accept that they are endgame. They had their mating ceremony, Nesta calls him her mate in Hofas, they are still together and happy in Hofas. Bryce even notices Cassian is a good mate.

Yeah, I'm happy to stick with my headcanon version of Miquella. The DLC certainly has some interesting editions (particularly regarding Marika's history) but I hate what they did with Miquella and Radahn.

Disclaimer: I haven't played the DLC yet, I'm going off of Fextralife and my mutuals. So if I get something wrong, sorry in advance.

The sad thing is that I think the DLC concept of Miquella could have worked. In fact, it could have been amazing. The idea of Miquella trying to ascend to godhood by sacrificing pieces of himself rather than sacrificing others, only to lose so much of himself that he forgets the compassion that originally motivated him, could have been beautifully tragic and fitting for his character.

Don't get me wrong, that's not how I hoped Miquella's story would end. But this is Fromsoft we're talking about. I don't want Lady Maria to make every possible wrong decision until the guilt consumes her, then die (twice) in service to a lie. I don't want Artorias to die alone and consumed by madness, only able to be put down like a rabid dog. I don't want Lothric to be executed and dragged to the Kiln despite his brother's best efforts to save him. I don't want Vyke to fall to Frenzy because he refused to sacrifice his companion. But all of these ends feel narratively satisfying. The tragedy feels earned, beautiful in a way rather than pointless.

The broad concept of Miquella's arc could have been a classic Fromsoft tragedy. But instead it ends up feeling... deeply stupid, once you look into the details. From what I understand, the entire thing could have been resolved by Malenia and Radahn engaging in single combat at an agreed-upon spot. If Radahn was the one insisting on a match, why did Malenia march her armies across an entire continent of hostile territory? Why involve two armies-worth of collateral damage? If Radahn needed to die to reach the Land of Shadows, why the everliving fuck did Malenia hit him with the one thing that would ensure he lived on for centuries in undying agony? Why did Miquella leave Malenia and the Haligtree to literally rot (before he cast aside his love, mind you) when presumably the whole point of his ascension was to save them? If Miquella was the one manipulating Mohg, why didn't he manipulate Mohg into doing the blood-ministration thing at his cocoon at the Haligtree instead of staging a fake kidnapping?

So in short, yes, I will be sticking with my interpretation Miquella 😊

Strengths: the fact that he is a genius and resembles his ancestor. He is loyal friend and relies on Toto so much.

Flaws: That reliance on Toto so much. It will break him if Toto leaves him. Also he’s quick to be angry. Mood swings

Strengths: His resilience, his ambition of being a truly capable investigator, his determination, his dedication

Flaws: saying things without filter, lack of confidence, he gets to be rattled easily that Ron reminds him of taking his time in order to make a proper deduction.

Now that we have the anime version of the plateau Auberge arc ending, one of the most poignant and at the same time ridiculous criticisms I have read is that Toto, as a police investigator, seems to have lacking in self-preservation. This reminds me of one of @tamikayosa former asks. Is Toto so depressed to think about dying with Ron?

There’s something romantic about it in some ways. He knew that at this moment there was nothing he could do anymore. They were trapped with every possible exit hindering their way. What to do? He and Ron gave up. He did what he could. He saved the others.

On the other hand, I wouldn’t begrudge him for coming back for Ron. He was full of gratitude to this man who had given him more credit and affection than any people in his life combined. Ron gave him that chance to be good in his work. Maybe that’s the Japanese side of him. His work completes him. And Ron has become part of it. So when they seated alone surrounded with the crackling sound of fire and destruction, at the brink of death, it was an honour to die with Ron. Because if Ron died, not only his conscience would disturb him but also he didn’t want to miss the chance to be with him at the last hour of their lives. In short, Toto fell hard for Ron. That’s the only possible explanation.

The moment Toto said he’d support Ron no matter what. Ron was taken aback bc it was the first time a human being offered him some helping hand. It was the moment Ron took a look at him, perhaps intrigued who this person was. Toto didn’t look bad and what counted then was the case. Then they found out they had one thing in common. This love of cases. And to help people.

The onsen scene without a doubt.

Ron telling him that if he’d lost the table tennis match Toto would be his slave all his life. What a vague and bold statement to be with Toto forever.

After the Solitary Island arc, Toto has refused to stay away from Ron. And that goes on until the cruise ship arc where Toto goes wherever Ron goes. It is canon.

You’ve lived in Coco Village for as long as you can remember. You’ve never left and never thought you would ever want to. Things were absolutely perfect here for you. Your family lived here, your best friends were here, you had everything you could ever need. That was until Arlong and his men came. The day they took over the village was the worst day in the village.

Many people died, they became bankrupt, they weren’t able to get many supplies, and they were constantly worried about their village being torn down by Arlong. Though, to you, something even worse happened to you. Nami left the village and joined forces with Arlong. You remember being so angry at her when you found out from Nojiko what she did. Every time she came to the village to collect money, you were always glaring at her with a ferocity you didn’t know you were capable of.

These feelings changed when you found out the truth. When you were walking in the forest one night, you found the girl digging up something near her mother’s grave. When you saw all the treasure, Nami felt like she had no choice but to tell you the truth behind her actions. She told you how she was saving up money and other expensive things so she could take back that village from Arlong. You felt so badly about the way you treated her after that.

That day, you decided to help her. You wanted to join forces with Arlong as well so she wouldn’t be alone, but she refused. She refused to have you place yourself in a dangerous situation like that. With no way to convince her, you had to help in other ways. Ways which included traveling and stealing expensive objects and money. It felt nice for you both to be on the same side again.

Eventually, the reinforced bond turned into something more. You came back from traveling, and it just so happened to be on the same day that Nami was supposed to collect money from the village. But she didn’t show up. A fishman showed up in her place. This worried you beyond belief. Nami was always the one to collect money from them. Why wasn’t she there to collect it now?

That night, you went to Bellemere’s grave. Relief flooded you when you saw the orange-haired woman sitting there. Anger took over you next when you saw a bruise on the girl’s face. Nami tried to avoid the subject first by telling you everything was fine. You persisted, and she finally came clean. She apparently pushed Arlong too far, and he took his anger out on her by hitting her.

You tried to convince her to leave Arlong. You told her that you could come clean to the village about everything, and they would hide her. You even told her that you could both run away together. She refused to do either of those things, saying it was for the good of the village that she stayed. You broke down, telling her that you didn’t like that she had to be put through so much pain. It wasn’t fair. You’d been rambling so much to the point that Nami couldn’t get a word in. She shut you up in the best way possible. She kissed you.

This was the start of your secret relationship. At night, you would meet at Bellemere’s grave to be together. You stayed around the village more in case Nami ever needed your help for any reason. Things were great. However, this sparked some interest in the village.

It was a regular day so far. It was a day that Nami was supposed to come and collect money, so things were definitely a little tense. All of the villagers were together in the middle of town. They were putting all their money together in a box that they could give to Nami. They barely managed to scrape together enough money, but they thankfully did.

The sound of someone clearing their throat got your attention. You looked over to see Nojiko was by your side. She gave you a look of suspicion, “I’ve noticed something, (Y/N)” You hummed in question. “It’s usually on these days that you disappear at night. Where do you even go? What are you doing on these days?”

Was making out with her sister an acceptable answer? Thankfully, you didn’t have to worry too much about answering the question. A woman with orange hair walked through the village's front gates. People parted ways as their eyes found her, and everything went quiet.

It’d been two weeks since you had a moment alone with her. Arlong was starting to get suspicious of Nami’s frequent trips alone out of Arlong Park. Nami decided it was best to distance yourselves for the time being. Seeing her now caused your mind to wander. What you would give to drag her off into the woods so you could finally be by yourselves. God knows you both needed it. It almost felt like she was teasing you with the way her hips swayed while she was walking.

The thoughts were interrupted when she “accidentally” bumped shoulders with you. At first, you thought nothing of it. That was until you saw something on the ground. A slip of paper. You quickly bent down to pick it up, hiding it so no one would see it. You opened it up and saw something written on it. On it read, “Tonight. The usual place.” A grin grew on your face.

This wasn’t the ideal relationship for you. When you were younger, you dreamed of having a relationship where you could be out in the open with it. But with how things were now, this would have to do. You would make do with what you had and wouldn’t complain. Wait.. How? Bakugou was still alive..

Bakugou managed to dodge the shot but caused himself to fall down on his side, still tied onto the chair. “Y/N, YOU REALLY NEED HELP!” Bakugou angrily said. “WHY CAN’T YOU JUST– DIE?!” Y/N cried, her face was twisted with anger and sadness. She has been tormented by the memories, almost becoming deaf, almost dying from drowning and from his Quirk, and she hated it. Her breakdown was worse this time. She was yelling, trashing her surroundings while Bakugou tried his best to get out of his restraints. “Why can’t you leave me alone? I hate you! Stop! Shut up!!” She said to herself, her hands gripping her hair hard.

Bakugou managed to get out of the restraints and quickly walked towards Y/N. “Y/N, calm down.” He said in a stern voice, almost demanding. Y/N just looked at him with her E/C eyes that glowed a pink glow. “Leave me ALONE!” She screamed, pushing him away.

“Y/N, listen to me. I know I haven’t been the nicest to you in the past but what I know, I can change. Someone showed me that I could change to be a better person, a better hero. I hate that I couldn’t mend things with you but this is my chance to mend things with you if you let me help you. You can become the hero you always dreamed of with Deku.” Bakugou softly said, extending both his hands out as he walked slowly towards Jinx who was looking at him with widened eyes, her hands fidgeting.

“I don’t need your pity.” She spat with venom. “I’m not pitying you, I’m trying to help you.” Bakugou replied, getting close to her by the second. “I don’t need anyone’s help. I’m hopeless! I’m a freak case! What makes you think you could fix me?!” Jinx asked, her body was in an unstable, angered, and vulnerable state. She was shaking as she heard the voices messing with her head.

By now, Bakugou was standing close to her, looking straight at her but she was standing on her left side, not noticing Bakugou as she held her head in a tight grip. Bakugou felt guilty, how is that possible? He feels no quilty over bullying Deku but he felt the guilt twist his guts when it came to remembering his torment on Jinx. If he wanted to be a hero, he needed to make some changes. His hands reach towards Jinx’s trying to get her attention. But as his hands reached closer, she turned her head to look at him with frightened eyes as she looked at his hands that were reaching for hers.

She couldn’t help but sob more as she pounced on him, crying hysterically. Bakugou was stunned but soon hugged her back, combing her hair to soothe her. “I don’t think I can fix you.. But I can help you.” Was all Katsuki said.

She lifted her head to look him in the eyes. “Do..Do you think I can be a.. Hero too..?” She asked in soft hiccups. Katsuki had a small smile on and nodded, “Yes.” He answered.

Jinx couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief? Of what? Oh… Relieved that she could change paths, that she could follow her dreams instead of following her nightmares. Relieved that she could make new friends, friends with the same goal.

That all faded away when she saw someone behind Katsuki. Toga, and she looked furious. Furious that one of her close friends in the League was hugging a hero course student, the League’s target no less! She grabbed her knife and swung it towards Bakugou’s back. Jinx’s eyes widened and quickly hugged Katsuki tight which shocked him. What shocked him more was when she quickly turned around, swapping their places when she was stabbed by the thrown knife, its very tip grazing her heart.

“Y/N!” He called out. He was furious, blasting Toga away from them. Katsuki didn’t pull the knife out since it was impaled in her and would only cause her to bleed out if he were to take it out. “Why the fuck would you do that?!” He angrily asked. Y/N just smiled. “A hero would do that… Right?” She asked with a smile. Katsuki couldn’t stop the water from pouring out of his eyes. “...Right.” He grinned.

“Shit- I’m always a jinx so I guess I deserve this fate.” She chuckled. Katsuki couldn’t help but tear up a bit. He quickly grabbed her to try to pick her up to bring her to the hospital– But she stopped him. “You won’t be fast enough.” She protested. “I will be fast enough!” Bakugou protested back, picking her up and ran as fast as he could to bring her to the hospital.

Just as they were a mile away from the hospital, someone yelled from a distance. “IT’S NOT OVER YET!” Bakugou didn’t look but he knew it was a member from the LOV. Shigaraki was furious that he lost his little play toy. Using two of his fingers, he grabbed a crystal that was long ago made by Y/N. He smashed it to the ground, inches away from Y/N and Katsuki.

Bakugou managed to blast away before it exploded, creating a hole in the city’s ground but only caused the knife to slip even deeper by the impact. “You’ll make it.” He promised to the girl who had fallen unconscious, running as fast as he could.

The hospital’s walls were white and clean, the air was fresh, and patients and medical staff crowded the halls and rooms.

In one of the rooms, Katsuki Bakugou held the hands of Y/N L/N who lay unconscious on a hospital bed. He hoped for the best for her.

Slowly, she opened her eyes to the bright light of the hospital room, taking quick glances around the room before her eyes landed on Katsuki’s figure. He felt eyes on him and looked up to see her looking at him. He couldn’t help but show a small smile before hugging her softly.

Jinx was no more… It was just.. Y/N. A soon to be hero.

i know, colin and pen were SO cute. in the books i’m pretty sure colin stays by her side even when he’s mad at her about whistledown, so i didn’t like how distant he was in the show. he’s supposed to be more “im so angry but im also so in love with you” but in the show he was more “im so angry and i don’t know if i want you anymore” which wasn’t my fav, but they were still adorable. although him leaving her in the street, alone, at night, after he found out her secret was the most out of character thing i’ve ever seen. colin would never. that choice was not thought through. but when they fought and yelled at each other in the street and then got spicy immediately after??? i was LIVING for that

Awww thank you ♥️ It does get pretty lonely sometimes when the community is small, I wouldn't say it's the sole reason to get demotivated by that fact. I'll still draw or yap about FJ whenever I want, shamelessly too. 😂 I don't particularly care that it spawns hate or makes people uncomfortable. I get quitting as AoT has long finished so it's natural that the fandom fizzle out especially so if its for ships/characters that are less popular. I also encourage people to actively interact with each other! Go talk to people @ bsky/X. Make silly headcanon posts, polls, anything to make the fandom alive! As for the haters part, unfortunately it can be a strong deterrent from encouraging ppl to make content. I don't blame them for leaving tbh. It is mentally exhausting and especially so if you're in small communities which means having to deal with it alone.

Ok to answer the first part of your question: Canon Jean never actually says who he loves more, so I don’t think anyone can ever give a definite answer in regards to canon. Just a bite sized explanation on what I think of RJ and FJ:

Jean admired Reiner a lot during their cadet days, like most of the 104th. Reiner was that strong, dependable guy who everyone looked up to. So when the betrayal happened, Jean was completely appalled and it probably hit him even harder when he found out the full details later. In Shiganshina, like Connie and Sasha, he was struggling to accept that they have to end Reiner but ultimately learn that he has to. But by Reiner's luck, they failed. When presented with the opportunity to argue for Reiner's life, Jean took his chance. You could argue he was arguing for science and stuff. I chose to see it as that AND Jean trying to save his ex comrade life despite feeling betrayed.

Still, after everything, Jean managed to push those feelings aside to stop the Rumbling. He even saved Reiner multiple times. People argued that it’s just because they couldn’t afford to lose Reiner, which is fair, but Jean didn’t have to give him that pep talk mid-battle, risking his own life. Then there’s that banter between them near the end. Some people see it as joking around and getting comfortable with each other again. I have seen others taking it as serious insults. Personally, I think it shows they’ve reached a point where they can move past the betrayal and just be themselves again.

Now with Floch, he and Jean started out in pretty similar places, but then they were hit by their own traumatic event except they took completely opposite paths. Floch went full extremist, while Jean tried to stick to his morals. Jean was the only person we saw in canon who actually “comforted” Floch or is friendly with him judging by how Floch stuck to him during pre ceremony. Most of their interactions later on is of Floch leaving Jean speechless with his arguments because, as radical as they were, there was some logic to them and that spoke to Jean the practical guy. Jean understood Floch and how he came to be what he is.

I’m sure Jean was super disappointed and disgusted with what Floch did during the Rumbling, but he never wanted him to die! (People need to stop saying that!!) And it says a lot that Jean stayed by Floch’s side as he died, something none of the other Paradis alliances (except Hange) did. In the og manga, he was also seen stopping Floch from bleeding out. I also just realized that Jean showed sadness and was not shocked upon realizing it was Floch who was shot. That shows that Jean still cared about Floch, despite it all.

So, who did Jean love more?

Honestly, I don’t think it’s a matter of “more.” It’s about the different ways he cared for both of them. He forgave Reiner and respected him as a comrade again. With Floch, it was more about empathy and understanding, even if they ended up on opposite sides.

Jean trusted Reiner again.

Jean understood Floch.

Both mattered to him, just in different ways.

Also, I want to point out that even though I used canon events to explain my thoughts, it’s still not canon! Different people interpret these moments differently. In the end, it’s all a figment of our minds. 🙂

Ranking My Favorite Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) Songs

Twenty-two songs. Five hours. One helpless, JCS-obsessed tumblr user who has so many other things they could be doing with their time. Get ready!

Disclaimers: I'm going to try to base my ranking on the soundtrack alone, but for some numbers, I really can't separate the song from the visuals. I won't be including "The Crucifixion" or "John 19:41," since those don't really count imo. The former, I will say, has some of my favorite chaos jazz that's ever been produced, so I'll give it that. Also! I LOVE this musical, and I LOVE this movie. Even the lowest songs have made it onto my playlists once or twice. So if I bash your fav, don't be too offended <3

22. Peter’s Denial - This one is really only low on the list because of how short it is. All things considered, I really like that funky little intro. Also, I think Mary, Peter, and whoever that third guy in the scene is with them (John??) would make a good throuple YEAH I SAID IT.  

21. Hosanna - I don’t know why I’m putting this one so low, either. It’s very fun and pleasant to listen to, and it’s got some great ensemble work, which is always something I jive with. I guess it’s just not as captivating to me as some of the other songs in this film. I actually like some other versions of this song better than the 1973 one (!!) Nevertheless, this song is genuinely really good and it shows that, hey, Jesus can smile! 

20. Then we are Decided - This is the only production of the musical I’m aware of that contains this song. I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, it’s a great song. I don’t know if ALW+Tim Rice are physically capable of collaboratively making a bad song. Also, I love Bob Bingham and Kurt Yaghjians’ voices, so anytime I get to hear them, I’m happy. On the other hand, I can see why this one was taken out of most productions. It wasn’t in the original concept album, and it kind of breaks up the story. It does provide extra context for Caiaphas’s motivation, but it doesn’t say much that isn’t reiterated in “This Jesus Must Die.” There just really isn’t a place for it in most productions, which is such a shame. At least we got this amazing screengrab out of it. Annas, you creepy little shit, I love you.

19. Pilate’s Dream - It took me far too long to recognize that this is the same song as the second part of “Poor Jerusalem,” which is funny given that they are right next to each other in the movie. I love the acoustic guitar in this one, and Barry Dennen is seriously one of the most subtly expressive actors I’ve seen. You could watch this scene 1,000 times and still be picking up new context on your 1,001st viewing. As far as the song goes, it’s a very nice introduction to Pilate’s character. Also, I think that discordant “Pilate” the chorus sings at the end doesn’t get enough praise.

18. King Herod’s Song - First of all, the way this scene just. 1) Inserts itself into the film 2) Refuses to elaborate 3) Leaves. I love it. I love how uncomfortable Herod’s whisper singing makes me, I love his campy friends, everything about this scene is amazing. It’s an absolute 180 in terms of tone, but I kind of love it for that.

17. I Don’t Know How to Love Him - I find it interesting that the most popular song from this soundtrack is also what many consider to be the most boring. Personally, I find the song very beautiful and fascinating, but I can see why it’s skippable for some. I’m just a massive fan of Yvonne Elliman. I think the only people that have come close to her version are Helen Reddy and Sara Bareilles. Also, I like to read this song as someone rediscovering their own self-worth through love after experiencing trauma from past relationships, which I think is a very relatable struggle.

16. Pilate and Christ - Pilate is just. So sassy. What’s most impressive about this performance is that Barry Dennen considered himself an actor first and a singer second. His acting is certainly spot-on, but his singing is pretty fantastic as well! The tension between Pilate and Jesus in this scene almost rivals that of Jesus and Judas… almost.

15. Overture - An overture is meant to provide the audience with a bit of musical context for what they’re about to hear. This piece does a very good job at that. The electric guitars immediately invoke intrigue- then the horns come in, then the strings and percussion get going, and at this point, any viewer of this film would be hard-pressed not to be at least a little excited. Then the “Heaven on Their Minds” riff starts, and I, for one, was instantly hooked. I especially like the violin bit near the end. The chorus wordlessly mimicking what will be Judas’ sung betrayal is chilling. The whole thing is a beautiful combination of rock music and traditional broadway styling, which is a good description of the rock opera in general. 

14. The Arrest - I really like the leitmotif that is used whenever Jesus is overwhelmed by a crowd. It was used with the temple-goers, the lepers, and now with his own people that have turned against him (and some who cautiously maintain their support for him). Also, like Matt Berry said, the “Now we have him, now we’ve got him” bit of the song is pretty bone-chilling. 

13. Could We Start Again Please? - I really like this song. I know it wasn’t in the original concept album, but its placement actually makes sense, and Ms. Elliman, naturally, sounds heavenly. The melody of this song is really nice, and it doesn’t sound at all out of place in the movie. 

12. What’s the Buzz/Strange Thing Mystifying - This is one of those songs that’s hard not to move around to. It’s just so much fun! It also is Jesus��s first physical and vocal appearance, and WOW. Neeley is a truly underrated 70s rock singer. His voice is impeccably strong and gorgeous. He’s somehow been criticized for this role (mostly by angry Catholics) for being too untouchable and emotionless. I just can’t agree with that. Did any of those reviewers even listen to the movie they were watching? Neeley’s far-off gaze is not something he can change, and I for one think it adds to the character. He provides what I think is the best portrayal of Jesus Christ in any production of JCS. Besides that, the ensemble is doing great here, too! I promised not to get too involved in the visuals for this ranking, but I have to mention the movements in this scene. The apostles and women are just so jumpy and full of energy. It really makes the scene fun to watch. And Mary! I’m a long-time fan of Yvonne Elliman, and she was the only person I knew of beforehand going into this film. Her voice is so mature and unique, which is perfect for the role of Mary. She was the initial performer of this role in the concept album, the broadway show, and the film, and it shows. This role belongs to her. Obviously, it’s a bit annoying that we got yet another portrayal of Mary as an ex-sex-worker, but if we got “Strange Thing Mystifying” out of it, I can’t be too mad. Judas really gives off jealous bitch vibes here, but he does make some good points.

11. Everything’s Alright - Oh Yvonne, who allowed you to steal my heart? Seriously, she sounds so, so lovely in this song. This song is so calming. It uses a 5/4 time signature, which gives it distinction. The contrast between the cool comfort of Mary’s voice and the angsty gravel of Judas’ voice is very striking. Both Judas and Jesus hit some insanely difficult belts here, and they do so flawlessly. This scene also expands on the relationship between Judas and Jesus, which is jam-packed with not-entirely-heterosexual intensity. As the chorus repeats the titular line at the end with increasing volume and intensity, we get the distinct impression that everything is, in fact, not alright.

10. The Last Supper - I could go either way on the apostle’s part. It’s good, and it has some good harmonies in the latter parts, and it also reminds me of John Denver somehow? Anyway, the mellow gold aesthetic is one of my favs, but that’s not why I love this song. The absolute release of tension that is the fight between Jesus and Judas is captivating. My head moves as if I’m watching a heated tennis match when these two get going. I’ve seen versions of their interaction that just don’t go well on stage because the parts require so much energy and intensity, and sometimes they have this, but it just doesn’t sound good. But since this is a film, we can be confident that we are seeing and hearing the best takes from the actors. In this version, I can feel the heat between J and J, but they also sound fucking amazing while arguing. Their final interaction tugs at my heart. And these two actors portray their relationship with such authenticity that it’s almost hard to watch any other version without holding this up as the standard. Also, fun fact: they separate at exactly 1 hour into the film.

9. This Jesus Must Die - I have a big crush on both Caiaphas and Annas. Their voices just mesh so well together; Annas has these Al Stewart-like whimsical vocals, and Caiaphas has this deep, sexy growl. (I have a raging hard-on for good bass voices if you couldn’t tell). They sometimes put baritone singers in this role, which just doesn’t really work. This part needs a man who sounds like he just came out of the black lagoon and desperately needs a drink. Along with how it sounds, the lyrics of this song are super clever. The “Jesus is Cool” line is an inside joke in the community- they removed it from many popular productions, which is disappointing as hell. It’s one of the best lines in the song! Anyway, as far as “villain” songs go, this one is top-tier for sure.

8. Damned for all Time/Blood Money - I love me some good Judas angst. But in all seriousness, this song is ridiculously hard to sing. It would be enough with the sheer number of words sung in quick succession, but it is also written in a pretty high register. I, as a female alto, struggle to comfortably reach some of the notes, but Carl Anderson, of course, does it flawlessly. Of course, I’m also obsessed with Caiaphas and Annas, so any song they’re in makes me kick my feet like a schoolgirl. This scene, being the turning point in the show, makes its mark and has impeccable pacing for such a chaotic number.

7. Judas’ Death - Carl Anderson is a performer. I felt everything Judas felt in this scene. His reprise of “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” is impossible to look away from or tune out. When I first watched this scene, I didn’t know Judas was going to reprise the fucking love ballad. My jaw was on the floor the whole time. Other actors sometimes make this part sound ugly and raw, which is fine, but emotion can be portrayed while singing while still sounding good. That’s what really gets me about this version. You can feel the raw emotion, and yet you can’t deny how good the singing is. I also didn’t know Judas was going to straight up hang himself, and that kind of shocked me. To think this movie was rated G back in the day! 

6. Simon Zealotes/Poor Jerusalem - Oh man. I’ve gotta be careful here if I want to keep my ranking based on sounds alone, cause this scene is just visually AMAZING. I might make a post about how much I adore this scene- the choreography, the craftsmanship, the absolutely iconic shots, the goofy ass freeze frames- I just love it all so much. The song is nothing to sneeze at, either. It feels like something you’d hear in one of those fun-loving, joyful churches that promote same-sex marriage. Larry Marshall has such a cool voice; you can tell he really put his all into it. Apparently, he initially tried to reign it in so as to respect the source material, but Norman Jewison just told him to go all out. So that’s what he did. It makes for a damn good number. As for “Poor Jerusalem,” I love hearing Ted Neeley’s softer voice. When he reaches into his falsetto, it sends shivers up my spine. 

5. The Temple - I love a good ⅞ song. Additionally, I love a good ensemble song. In addition to that addition, I love seeing Jesus go off and flip tables and shit. But that’s not why this one is so high on my list. This song skyrockets up my personal ranking due to what happens between the temple and the leper scenes, when Neeley scream-sings “MY TEMPLE SHOULD BE A HOUSE OF PRAYER, BUT YOU HAVE MADE IT A DEN OF THIEVES! GET OUT! GET OUT!” I get actual chills every time I listen to him do that. I also really like the way the leper scene ramps up musically. It starts off slow and creepy, and ends in a wholly claustrophobic panic-inducing chant. The harmonies are also very pleasing. 

4. Trial Before Pilate - This song is a masterclass in rock opera composition. Barry Dennen’s performance is absolutely, without a doubt, the most incredible embodiment of this role that I’ve seen. Pilate’s songs were essentially made for him, because like Ms. Elliman, he was the first to play his respective role. I genuinely don’t know how he was able to perform Pilate night after night on tour, because this role is supremely demanding vocally. You can tell he is a professional, though, because you can’t just scream at the top of your lungs every night without good technique. I could say a lot more about this one, but I’ll save that for another time.

3. Superstar - I really wish the little guitar intro was kept in future versions of this song. (How many times can I talk about guitar intros in this ranking??) This song is SO! MUCH! FUN! I have to take a second to talk about the cinematography in this scene… it’s really something else. It mayyyy have influenced the ranking, just a bit. Nonetheless, it’s Carl Anderson singing, so of course, this song sounds stupendous. He hits those high notes like it’s nothing. Also, I have to say: this number is very clearly directly influenced by motown-style music, and hearing a black man singing it just feels right. In fact, rock as a genre can be traced back to music created and sustained by black folks. It makes sense that my favorite versions of this musical involve diverse casts. Anyway, I really like this song because of how direct it is with its message. It’s not only Judas asking these things of Jesus, but us as the audience. Why would he put himself in such a bad position? How could he let it get this out of hand? Did he lose his message along the way? Contemplative shit like that set to a 70’s disco dance scene has me losing my mind, and I’m absolutely in love with it.

2. Gethsemane - I was considering putting this song lower, both to piss off my discord friends and because I genuinely enjoy listening to other songs from this soundtrack more, but I just had to give it a high-ranking spot. By this point you must be well aware of my love for Ted Neeley and his rock-god voice, but he really, truly steps it up here. It says a lot that he is still able to perform this song at almost 80 years old. He cares about what he’s doing. A lot. And while I’m not religious, some of my favorite music comes from religious people simply because they believe they are singing for something bigger than themselves. I strive to achieve that passion with my own voice and music, and I believe it can be done without a connection to a higher being. You just have to trust your own voice and focus on your message/role, and Mr. Neeley does not fail on this front. All of this, and he hits the g5 note perfectly. He seriously sounds so goddamn amazing and I’m tired of people saying he’s overrated. Give this man the respect he deserves.

1. Heaven on Their Minds - I could gush about Carl Anderson’s performance of this song for hours, and I mean HOURS. Not only does he completely embody the role of Judas, but he sounds damn good while doing it. He combines this gravelly rasp with clean, clear notes, and every belt is perfectly executed. The agonized fade-out at the end is not something that’s really possible on-stage, so I appreciate it all the more in the movie. This was the first song in the musical that I saw in full, and it’s really what started my obsession. Even though HOTM is a nearly perfect musical theater/rock song, it was Mr. Anderson’s performance of it that got to me.  To me, he IS Judas whenever he’s on screen. His voice is just… spectacular. Additionally, as an agnostic person, the lyrics in this song really resonate with me. “You’ve begun to matter more than the things you say” instantly became one of my favorite lines in musical theater upon first listen. Like I said, I could go on and on about this one, so I’ll just go ahead and stop myself here.

Jiwoong believes everyone around is born with a flame inside them. A soul in a very literal sense. That flame is their innocence, their light. Jiwoong believes if your innocence is broken, or your love of the world weakens, your flame begins to die down and light begans to dim. Eventually leaving nothing but darkness.

That’s what he feels like. A flame that has been put out. A dark all consuming soul. Never to shine on anyone. He doesn’t remember when it came to be this way. But it’s his truth.

He stays alone, always. He doesn’t want to put out anyone’s light. Until another character enters this tragic story. The brightest soul you will ever have the pleasure of meeting. Seok Mathew.

Kim jiwoong met Seok Mathew in university. Mathew was a few years younger than jiwoong, so he enrolled during the olders boy’s third year. Jiwoong could help but stare. His eyes were drawn to his energy. How he held himself. How he smiled, and how he seemed to never stop smiling.

He watched the younger boy in every class they’d have together. This is what he was content with. Watching Mathew from afar, for however long he could. Watching him was like watching the sun rise. Always to be admired, but never touched.

This story begins the day this barrier was broken.

“Hey!” A small voice calls.

Jiwoong turns around to see the man he’s been eyeing all term, holding his jacket. A shiver goes down his spine. How did he know that was his? Why does he care?

“I think this is yours, you left it in class.”

Obviously. Jiwoong thinks. The younger boy had such a oblivious innocence about him.

“Yes that’s mine. I must’ve been in a rush leaving that lecture. Thankyou.”

Mathew smiles wider as he hands the older boy his jacket. They’re eyes meet and Jiwoong seems to freeze for a moment. He’s never seen him so close before. He starts noticing new things about him. He was a lot shorter than he thought. Easily half a foot shorter than him.

“I’m sure you were in a rush, that lecture wasn’t too fun. He didn’t let us talk.”

The truth is Jiwoong has no memory of the contents of the lecture. He was a bit preoccupied watching Mathew fiddle with his pen and doodle in his paper.

“Yeah, sure.” He replies aloof. He had to create a new wall because physical distance wasn’t an option. He couldn’t help but shut people out. Even how bad he wanted them. He was too scared to let people in.

“It’s cold out today. I wouldn’t want you to freeze out there.” The young boy said concerned. As if they’ve already known each other.

Why does he care? Nobody has ever cared. Why now? Why him?

“Thanks again, Seok Mathew.” Jiwoong quickly relizes he had made a mistake. Oh shit. He never told me his name. Fuck.

“Oh! You know my name?” Mathew asks suprised. Jiwoong did his best to cover up.

“Oh, yeah uh, I’ve heard the professors call on you.”

“Oh, of course.” Mathew agreed blindly. What a stupid excuse. And what an even stupider person to believe it.

“Well I don’t wanna bother you for too long,” Mathew starts as he slowly steps away.

Please bother me. Please don’t go.

“See you around, Kim Jiwoong.”

He starts to walk away, when he realizes the younger boy just said his name. He feels his ears getting red. He feels ashamed for feeling excited about something so small. Just the sound of Mathew saying his name in passing gave him such a reaction. He wanted him to hear it more. And he hated wanting that.

When Jiwoong turned back to look for him, he was already gone. Who are you, Seok Mathew? And why do I want to let you in?

Hii there! Absolutely loved all your posts about Charlie (and Pit Babe in general) pleeease keep them coming it can’t be over 😍 Just wanted to ask how your felt about the reunion scene specifically, their expressions and words for each other ?

(ps: I chose to see how they wrote Babe sort of / seemingly letting go of his hurt / resentment towards Way as freeing himself from all of this experience to be able to move forward with a lighter heart (and certainly not because Way taking the bullet made it all okay and made all those conflicting and difficult feelings disappear), as he tells his father “I don’t want to keep all of this in my heart” when they meet… But honestly it’s just that I don’t wanna keep being frustrated about it to enjoy the rest haha)

(ps’: this last scene ??! the open sky, this beautiful horizon of possibilities, Babe wearing lighter clothes and not sticking to the “constructed image” black and white clothes (not that he isn’t gorgeous in them!) he always wore, all of them enjoying their time outside without worries or fears of what could be looming over them… Aesthetically beautiful shots yes but also narratively for me this scene felt really important… plus I loved how the way both couples are hugging or standing really fits their emotional dynamics and personalities!)

Oh how I love Charliebabe asks, you are so right anon, about the last part especially, within the horizon where the sky meets the water, we have our eternal lovers finally holding their beloved in their arms, seeing charliebabe being so happy within each other's arms will always be my fav..

About the reunion, I absolutely love it. Ik some wanted it to be more dramatic and all but it fit the show Charliebabe perfectly. Babe was beyond help during the absence of Charlie, he was hardly functional and the only fuel to his broken vehicle was the urge to seek revenge against Tony...seeing Charlie alive must have felt beyond anything, anyword ever...Charlie who was right there saving him, breathing, his scent, his warmth, HIM, he was there infront of babe, breathing, alive after a long unwanted seperation, Babe's anger, his pain, his grief just washed away. Babe is forgiving, yes, but the way for Babe Charlie sacrificing everything he had left to be with was beyond belief, he just desperately wanted Charlie to live and be safe, he wanted to be the one to save Charlie as much as he craved protection. Babe may be forgiving, but his grief about Charlie's death was more about "he didn't deserve to die, not after all that, he should not have been the one to die" than the more common "why did he have to die and leave me alone". It was Babe's guilt more than anything associated with grief that made him so miserable, he blamed himself for ever letting charlie be involved in this whereas Charlie griefed through the guilt of hurting babe again, especially when he knew how much pain babe would go through, he knew it yet he couldn't stop himself from feeling the guilt. That's what it was.
