Animal Crossing: New Horizons is arguably the most talked about topic (and video game) trending across all social media platforms at the moment… why? The world is in the midst of a stressful and uncertain time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which is why a cute, innocent and cheerful fantasy cartoon video game like Animal Crossing has quickly gained such popularity and is thriving during social isolation.

The game’s purpose is to give players a feeling of empowerment and community, visualized through an adorable and pastel aesthetic. This “warm-hug” environment is particularly appealing and important during times like this, when a global pandemic has dramatically altered everyone’s day-to-day lives.

Therefore, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is an excellent example of social gaming, interactivity and illustrates the power of video games to connect people.

Assignment 1 - Logline/Theme

Logline: 

An ambitious photographer is outraged when she discovers that the mythical creatures she photographed have disappeared.

Theme:

I want the story to revolve around the theme of animal conservation and the coming of age of an artist. After some research, I learned that there are many photographers who intrude into an animal's habitat, which disrupts their lifestyle.  Ultimately, people are destructive and animals have lived on the planet in peace many years before us. I want to send a message to the audience that we should not interfere with animals in the same way that we should not interfere with our own kind.

Logline:

A distracted girl tries to track down alluring fireflies, but she is greeted by a strange presence.

Theme:

This story is about the innocence of youth and the pros and cons that can come out of it. On one hand, the girl is experiencing complete bliss and wonder when discovering what a firefly is, but she is also easily susceptible to manipulation. This dichotomy of innocence has always been an interesting topic to me, and one that I sometimes miss in my own life, because I find that with age surprises are less common.

Sorry for bland unedited photos, I recently came across the story of the Gaming Grandma who at age 87 has been playing her town for last 4 years with 3500+ hours! I have to say this is the most wholesome story I've ever seen. People donated money for her to get a new Ds when hers broke so she could keep playing, and recently a nintendo switch was donated to her for the next game!
