i have never, EVER seen posts like the one OP mentions like, actually gain traction and importance or have the majority of ppl agree with them.

what OP is ACTUALLY describing however are posts i have seen: posts which discuss how categorizing men as inherently bad or prone to violence and cruelty, or positing men as the root of all evil in the world, ignores the nuance of a lot of patriarchial and societal issues which aren't so much focused on gender or sex as they are on gender and sex roles, the gender and sex binary, and the pressure of conformity placed on literally everyone, as well as the fact that not all men and not all women are on equal platforms of power or privilege.

a white man has more power and privilege than a black man and so does a white woman, and both of them have these things due to their race and also their gender. there are countless examples of white women utilizing their societal status and gender/sex roles to get black men literally murdered. you all know about emmett till i'm sure, but there are even more recent examples if you go looking

#i do find it very weird how the discourse surrounding taylor swift seems to have a recurring theme of “she doesn’t understand her own art”#as if her singing about mental illness = some republic exec told her to create a tiktok trend that capitalizes on anxiety#rather than her venting her anxiety about being The Most Famous Woman Ever through song. which is what her job is.#this isn’t a new phenomenon btw ppl do it to LDR to this day#idk i just find her work to be very self-aware

I have been waiting all day to finish work and get to these tags because I feel like you've hit on exactly what my issue was with this particular criticism of TTPD and I just hope I can articulate myself well enough.

Back during TTPD release week, a lot of people on this site and the clock app were taking the opinion that the themes of mental health were generic and basic because, essentially, "she's a rich billionaire who has never had any real problems" and she was simply making music that romanticised and simplifies mental illness because it's "trendy". Setting aside that I just don't agree with the first part because I think TTPD gives us a depiction of someone who was having very clearly struggling with alcoholism, passive suicidal ideation (seriously the amount of times she references wanting to die or feeling dead on this album is insane), manic phases (the title track and ICDIWABH come to mind) and self-sabotage via relationships. And these are just the broad strokes, you can break each thing I mentioned into sub-categories that still feature on TTPD. I am tempted to do so now, but that's not the point of this reblog and it would just feel like belabouring the point, so one we go. Basically, when you actually listen to the album, Taylor draws attention to specific struggles in a way that is so intimate because it is from personal experiences and is too personal have been made by some record label exec to be relatable and consumable. If that were the case, there would be generic "I'm sad" songs, not "getting lovebombed then ghosted has left me feeling broken, alone, naked and like I will never love again" or "this man is repulsive but it is my duty to fix him" or "I can't greive the end of a six-year relationship because people are already hounding at me for the juicy details". Each song highlights a new aspect of Taylor's psyche at the time and some of them feel like they can only exist in her circumstances.

But moving onto the second part, I think people made up their minds about TTPD before even listening to it, because Taylor is White Billionaire, and these words exist to handwave away any possible struggle she could have or sympathy another person could have for her. I remember seeing a comment on a TikTok saying "she's a billionaire, she hasn't had a non-generic problem in years". Which on the one hand feels strange given that a few months ago there was AI porn of her being shared on the internet, but I'm also interested in the phrase "generic problem". What is a generic problem and why does it matter? Do people who have quote-unquote "generic" problems deserve no sympathy and should not make art about their feelings? And again-who decides what these 'generic' problems are?

It is also worth noting that Taylor's wealth comes with the price of being the most famous person alive. As she said in the Lover music video, her life is a fishbowl. She gained insane amounts of wealth and influence but in turn lost privacy and basic normalcy and as such her "problems" are pushed so far down the spectrum to things most of us cannot understand.

I feel people made the assumption before listening to the album that Taylor Swift has no 'real' problems because she is Taylor Swift and therefore all the struggles she sings about are fake, generic, made up to capitalise on a mental illness trend. They don't want Taylor to have struggles, because they don't like her and don't want to sympathise with her, so any and all struggles are brushed off.

Which honestly brings up some interesting questions on how far should your personal opinion of the author influence the art. And if I wanted to be spiteful, I could say it shows a significant unwillingness to sympathise with anyone whose mental illness doesn't present in a way you would like it to.

once again being reminded of how weird being a taylor swift fan on this website is because the people who claim to hate her just clearly do not listen to her. I saw someone say "does taylor swift even know she's been turned into a brand and stripped of her humanity? is she aware of the fact she lives in a gilded cage where she can't be imperfect?" like my sibling in christ that's what her past two albums have been about about. what exactly did you guys think anti-hero was?

god. long post as i port over some twitter thoughts but. im catching up on tuc2 and i just don't want to gloss over the fact that d20 wrote a white woman becoming the chosen one of a culturally asian tradition and organisation. like it was already :/ in the first season but tuc2 making it clear that sofie made said organisation change bc they were doing things wrong makes it feel worse lol!

I'm a writer on here and i always see ppl discuss lack of inclusion/diversity in fics when it comes to the reader. Which deeply concerns me as a writer (the fact that ppl don't feel included) and even upsets me when i see such things in fics, as a reader. (like common things in fics about y/n as a blonde, skinny and white, 'porcelain/snow' kinda white woman, as they say.) [I'm white btw. South Europe white - just white with a tan, lol]

And I have a question is: do u think it's okay for white writers to write about a poc reader? Or should we just leave it for poc writers?

I’ve thought about this. I thank you for wanting to do something different. However, I think you should focus on making OCs that aren’t blonde/blue eyed, OCs or reader inserts that are more like you/your culture than to write a Reader of color.

Some may disagree with me but there are cultural things that even if you immerse yourself in a particular culture, may not come out right when you write the fic. while you may have good intentions, it is a way of silencing voices of writers of color.

The best thing for you to do is to reblog and amplify the voices of writers of color in the fandom. And, you can include characters of different cultures/ethnicities in your fics as side characters.

I Redesigned Mal's Wedding Dress!

Ok so I've been a fan of the costume design in the Descendants movies since the first one came out. However, when we were shown through the animated youtube shorts what Mal's wedding dress is going to look like, I was APPAULED and felt personally attacked by how hideously plain it was!

Like...SERIOUSLY?! THAT is the best they could've come up with?! This Isn't even dropping the ball, this is just not even bothering to throw it at all! especially when we compare it to the other dresses we've seen Mal In! Aka....

THESE!

So yeah I was not about to let this mediocre mockery slide. I knew for a FACT that I could design a better wedding dress for her in my sleep, and it was gonna eat away at my soul until I did I! so here it is!

I decided to try and do a fusion of Mal's coronation dress and her cotillion dress while adding my own personal touches! I kept the silhouette and color pallete of the Coronation Dress and added in my favorite parts of the cotillion dress which are the scorch marks and burn holes in her layered skirt and cape! But instead of regular black scorch marks, i made them lavender instead! I also added tiny white pearls around the edges of the scorch marks and on the bodice! And of course I had to go ham on the dragon motif so I gave her a pair of transparent dragon wings (that are shaped a little more like fairy wings cuz mal's half fairy) and a matching collar! Like a nice little Ever After dress moment (which you will see in my little reference collage below)

and of course we need a little commotion on the back of the dress, so I made this beautiful beaded dragon for the back of the dress! Which also serves a practical purpose because the wings will fuse with the dragon and the beading will cover up where the wings are atatched! The dragon is made of lavender and white pearls with chunky amethyst crystals to add different texture and to match mal's crown! (which I also redesigned for this! It's based off of sansa stark's crown from game of thrones because the body looks like dragon scales!

And as you can see in the reference collage, I also decided to give Mal viking braids in her hair because I thought it would look cool and I was right! I hope you all like it, because I sure do! And now my soul can finally be at peace knowing I did it better XD

Ok time for an out of nowhere rant about something that’s been on my mind recently. It’s kinda been an inside meme/joke in the monster high fandom for years that all of the characters regardless of how terrifying the creature they’re based off of are “pretty”✨ I mean ppl inside the fandom know it’s all in good fun and we get some SWEET fanart out of it, but ppl outside the fandom kinda take it way too seriously and that they should look just as scary as their monster parents. And I was thinking about how Frankie Stein in particular is a lot more accurate to the Original Frankenstein’s monster than a lot of people realize. In the original book by Marry Shelly, Frankenstein’s Monster wasn’t an ugly, unintelligent, hobbling amalgamation of dead body parts like he is in the movies. Victor Frankenstein (who was NEVER a real doctor btw) made him a beautiful man-almost entirely human looking- the ONLY reason Victor declared his creation a monster and a failure is because HE GOT HIS EYE COLOR WRONG. As in he had glowing yellow eyes. That’s literally it. Frankie being pretty and having 2 different colored eyes is WAY closer to that description of him and idk if that was intentional or not, but I can tell they based her off of equal parts book and movie Frankenstein due to her green skin and neck bolts. With a hint of bride of Frankenstein thrown in because of her black and white hair. So really, Frankie herself is actually an amalgamation of all iterations of Frankenstein’s Monster that came before her. And I just think that’s really flipping cool! :)

That she got mauled by Cinder and Jaune helped her commit assisted unalive? Or are we going to spare an old man’s heart (because honestly that’s too much for ANY parent to take in) and tell him that Penny died when she got hacked and her body was destroyed beyond repair and leave it at that?

So as of today it’s been one whole year since we got that teaser for Ice Adolescence (which was originally shown in Japan exclusively year ago) at this point I’m starting to get worried. Especially since MAPPA has been spread so thin and have been announcing one new project after another. Ice Adolesence has pretty much become the elephant in the room at this point that they really need to address. I mean I’m trying to b patient just like everyone else. But we’ve had nothing but delays, 1 trailer, and complete and utter radio silence. I’ve already heard and seen some fans starting to give up hope for the movie coming out at all. The movie never coming out has pretty much become a meme at this point. I just hope we hear something soon.

Been seeing this get reblogged by a lot of people on my dash, and guys, this is gross and paternalistic (not to mention classist/racist)

How about don’t be mean to people ebegging for their pets period? How about we stop passing judgment on poor folks? How about we recognize how harmful it is to collectively and arbitrarily decide who deserves to have basic life-enriching human experiences?

We are a species so aggressively social that it’s practically encoded in our DNA to pack bond with other species. There are hundreds of thousands of homeless animals, particularly in poor urban areas that lack the infrastructure and resources necessary to keep stray animal populations down. There is so much evidence showing relationships with pets literally save peoples lives. Pets are increasingly being recognized as family members in their own right.

Who are you to decide what someone’s financial situation must be in order to deserve life-saving familial relationships?

When you say “you should only have pets if you can afford the vet” you’re holding up the middle finger to all those who are unable to succeed at capitalism due to systemic oppression. You must not understand the history of paternalistic, white supremacist animal welfare proponents passing legislation that results in animals being systemically removed (stolen) from poor black and brown people. We white people impose conditions under which it is incredibly difficult if not impossible for black and brown folks to succeed economically, and if they don’t succeed to our white standards, we add another injury by asserting they don’t “deserve” certain basic human experiences and resources. You all sound just like republicans who freak out that poor folks own smart phones and refrigerators.

What about the disabled person who hauls ass across the city on public transit twice a month (an incredibly difficult feat for her) to take advantage of one of the few free pet food programs so that her cats (not to mention the strays she regularly looks after) have something to eat? What about the black trans woman who has been disowned by her entire family, but she scraped up enough money a couple years ago to buy a chihuahua from her neighbor and that dog is her entire life? (Both real ppl btw) They don’t deserve their pets? Because those are the people you’re talking about.

It does not matter what someone’s financial situation is. For the thousands of stray pets in poor urban areas, they have a better life with a poor person who can’t afford vet care than they would dying on the street alone and unloved. You are not in a position to know who is “responsible” enough to own pets or not, and people are going to own pets regardless of you deciding whether they are “allowed” to have pets. If someone is reaching out for help to afford vet care for their pet, either keep scrolling or contribute. Any other reaction just makes you look like a judgmental asshole. Don’t kick people who are already down.

There's a difference between "if you can't afford the vet don't get pets" (which is true unfortunately) and like, someone starting a gofundme/donation post bc their pet has some sort of crazy unforeseen illness that was impossible to predict...dont be mean to ppl ebegging for their pets bc they budgeted $250 for shots and worm medicine and don't have $2,000 laying around for feline MRI scans

idk, I listed the first five that came to mind but there’s more of them. also I don’t particularly care whether you do (I also do btw), I care that most people don’t, so going like ‘japanese americans or chinese americans are damaged by bad representation’ when people in general don’t care about those shows or throw the asian characters under the bus and it’s always complaining about ONE thing vocally (ie scarjo or finn j0nes) rather than promoting shows that have asian characters (have I ever seen any post promoting fresh off the boat in my life? nah I just know from three gifsets reblogged by europeans). like, if someone complains and then doesn’t support, which is the destiny of 90% of the shit discussed on tumblr since everything I watch with minorities that’s done well gets ignored or canceled. aha. there won’t be more if people complain about everything rather than watching it. without even going into asian americans... people wanted the peggy carter show for years, they got it, they complained about lack of nonwhite characters and din’t watch it, in S2 they did what fandom wanted and quality plummeted (I couldn’t even finish it) and it didn’t get renewed. it’s exactly the same story. you can’t expect majors to make more shows with asian characters if whenever they make them they tank. it’s not the point that there’s little of them. it’s that you will never have more of them if you don’t watch what little there is as imperfect as it is.

like, it’s basic capitalism. it’s the principle of demand/offer. if you demand and they offer but you don’t take what they offer then they won’t offer, if they know they’ll make sure cash off white actors. and you might not be the problem but the majority of people complaining about this shit who then doesn’t put their money where their mouth is is a problem. amazing, innit?

You do realize that the moment you say that ‘it doesn’t hurt japanese or chinese or koreans or what have you but japanese/chinese/korean-americans so their opinion doesn’t matter’ you’re... basically superimposing your values over theirs because it implies that their opinion is worth something but their opinion is more worthy, which is a thing that is inherently appropriative since it means that you have more right over their roles than them.

anyway, whenever people on tumblr complain about that shit, as above, white people appropriating culture by whitewashing characters is a thing that happens 99% of the time, so.

also, as stated, just mentioning the last two fiascos: with ghost in the shell as the other user who reblogged this with the addendum the movie itself was appropriative and a bad idea because it wouldn’t have worked with anyone but the japanese so an X-american playing scarjo’s role would still have been appropriative/incorrect. in iron fist the main character was white already so there’s no taking rep away, and the problem is that it’s culturally appropriative that he does martial arts and a bunch of other things, too bad that the chinese don’t care but their opinion doesn’t matter. so whose representation got taken away since they didn’t *whitewash* anyone else in that show? who even fucking knows. also: taking away roles from asian-americans means that you are adapting something and changing the characters’ ethnicity because if something’s taken away then it had to belong to someone in the first place. if white actors TAKE AWAY a role from an asian then the original role is asian and the white actor plays it (like scarjo in theory), but like then it means you’re adapting something. and if you’re adapting someone asian then having asian-americans in it is not the same thing at all. now the asians themselves don’t care so whatever but you can’t just go and say that it’s the same fucking thing all around. and if we’re talking original things you need more people to write roles created for asians or blind cast more asians, but in neither of these cases white actors are TAKING AWAY ROLES FROM ASIANS. I mean, it can work with death note because it’s taking a japanese story that makes no sense anywhere else and putting it in america and at this point having japanese-americans would have been way better than the shit going on now -
