Summary: Jared goes to London before it's too late to repair the damage his brother James can cause. Alfie Solomons hears the word he never expected to hear from his wife: Divorce. And for the first time in over two years he realises, he really realises, the pain he caused in Rose. || Tommy denies his new feelings.

"I'm going to London. You're welcome to come with me," Jared said to Tommy while they were walking through the dirty streets of Birmingham.

Tommy's heart stopped when he heard that. Unaware of the war that was about to startt in the heart of Camden Town, last thing was Alfie hearing from him. And especially not Rose.

"My brother," Jared said looking at him "is doing an innapropiate use of his dick. This fucking idiot."

"I'm sure your brother is a big boy that knows what he's doing."

"Not always. I'm not forbidden him doing anything, I'm just trying to make him understand that some pussies are not worth of a bullet."

"Is he fucking the queen consort?"

Jared smirked "something like that. So, for a few days I'm not going to be here. Are you going to miss having me around?"

"No."

"Keep sayin' that, Thomas Shelby. Say it until you believe your own lies."

Things in Camden Town were going from bad to very bad.

Few people didn't enter in the category of "no one bother Alfie Solomons when he orders it" and one of them was Samuel, Rose's brother. And his personal lawyer.

The last few days, after Rose kissing James, Alfie's mood was worse than ever before. Now, not even Ollie talked to him. Alfie's days start going straight to his office in the mornings, the one that didn't leave until the sunset. No one knew what was happening and didn't dare to ask either. But Samuel was there because he needed answers.

Far away in time was than thin kid that used to mock the young couple when they were still teenagers. The Samuel entering Alfie's was a 30 year-old man and he was furious. Before Alfie could known what was happening, Samuel's fist found his brother-in-law jaw and the blow resounded inside the office.

"What the fuck did you do to my sister. Give me a reason, Alfie, give me a fucking reason to not destroy your fucking face! What did you do to her!!"

Alfie looked at him angrily. Touching his sore face, just let out a grunt.

"Fuck off, Samuel."

"I'm not going to fuck off a shit, Alfie! I'm not one of your men! I'm your family!"

"What do you want, hmm? What do ya want me to tell ya?"

"Tell me why Rose called me this morning asking how much time it'd take a divorce. I thought it was for a friend, one of the women she hosts in Pebblebrock, but no… I couldn't believe my ears. Not she and you. So answer to me, fucker. What the hell did you do to Rosie?"

Alfie let himself fell in his chair. Whoever the bastard was, he was brainwashing Rose because there was no way that she was ready to leave him, if it wasn't for her new love. No, Alfie shook his head, Rose wasn't easy to manipulate and let alone by a man. His Rosie had found comfort in someone else and the one to blame was him and that was what made him angry.

"She gave you everything, son of the bitch. If I didn't bring the papers it's because I'm giving you the chance to fix your fucking mistakes before it's too late. Don't doubt for a second that I'm going to do whatever it's the best for her, even if that means divorcing you. Of all people in universe, you decided to hurt her. If what I think it's true, then I wish you the worst, Solomons. Your Rosie, of all people…- you decided to hurt her. You don't deserve her, prick."

Samuel left his place slamming the door behind him.

Rose was in her own office, in Pebblebrock when the phone rang.

"Rose Coldwell speaking, good afternoon."

"Rosie, Rosie listen to me."

"Alfie."

"Yes. Sweetheart, luv, fuckin' hell, pet. I know I hurt ya, but please… your brother just left, he spoke about divorce, papers… Rosie, please. I can't live without you. Without you, I don't exist!"

"Don't manipulate me, Alfie."

"I'm not!!"

"You're repeating a song I heard here on daily basis: 'I'm going to change, Mrs. Solomons, please allow my wife to see me. Mrs. Solomons I promise it won't happen again, I love her.' So, Alfie, you're not being original. Why do you suddenly care? And you can live without me, you certainly can because you've been living with a woman that wasn't me at all for the last two years."

"I know. But I love you."

"You keep saying that but I don't see it. I don't feel your love although I know it exists. There was a time where I was everything to you. I knew an Alfie once that could give his right arm for me. The Alfie I fell in love with, could never let me cry to sleep. My first love, the Alfie who was a teen working in a bakery and who promised me the sun and the moon could be disgusted by you. And you have the toupee to call me and say you love me? Why do you care about me now? Sign the papers, Alfie."

"Samuel refused to fill the papers."

"Then I'm going to hire a better lawyer."

"You don't want to divorce me."

"No. But for the first time in over two years I opened the eyes."

"Someone else made you open the eyes," Alfie couldn't help but let his jealousy and resentment talk. "Who's that fucker? I saw you."

Rose remained in silence for few seconds before answering "his name is James. And he helped me to understand that you're not the only man in the world capable of feeling something nice for me. Maybe we started our relationship too soon, Alfie. We were kids playing to be young adults in love. Maybe I didn't give you the chance to explore your real desires. Maybe I didn't have the chance to prove myself that I'm worth to be loved."

"My real desires? Rosie, I'm not homosexual. I love you and I desire you same as ever. And you are more than worthy to be loved."

"Then, why did you put him before me? Since when Thomas Shelby was the only one in your mind? Every time you look at me and you say you love me your eyes are empty. There's no love in your eyes. Without me, you're free because me, unlike you, I always looked forward your happiness before mine."

Rose ended the call before she was betrayed by her own trembling voice.

Alfie was right. She didn't want to divorce him, but she was also tired.

James was waiting for his brother in the lobby of the hotel with Oscarwilde next to him. It was about time that Jared was taking back his pet, but James knew too well that despite how much he loved the white borzoi, Jared's real reasons to be there were far from being related to the dog.

Once Oscarwilde recognised the man in front of him, the guests, and people working, there were witnesses of the most genuine happiness they'll probably see the whole day when the animal began to jump around his real master, wagging his tail and whimpering at his feet.

"It's okay, baby! Papa is back. He's back!" Jared kneeled in front of him and let his dog kiss his face. Even sophisticated dogs as Oscarwilde was, missed the most beloved person in their world.

Two glasses of whiskey were in front of them not longer after both brothers finally entered the bar that the hotel had and when finally Oscarwilde calmed enough to let them talk.

"I know why you are here and I know it's not because of the dog." James spoke first looking at Jared.

"Then you know me," he said.

"Of course I fucking know you. You're here to tell me that I need to leave Rose alone."

"Not exactly. I'm here to warn you that she's a vulnerable woman who is hurt because her stupid husband didn't take care of her, but that if he opens his eyes then you have no chance."

"And you are here to be the saviour."

"God, James…" Jared sighed "I'm not Cupid, but I know love make us do stupid things. Tommy didn't spoke so nuch, almost nothing really, but for what I know the Solomons have a long story together. And even if not, she has her own business here, she's not going to go to Dublin because of you and I can't imagine you living here without losing your head in few months. It's new, you like her I understand… but I- James, I know you're smarter than this and it's not going to work. Not in this universe at least."

"But you are ready to have a chance with Thomas Shelby. Only you can't do it if Solomons is in between and that means putting Rose again in his life."

"Tom is a single man, I told you. He doesn't have any spouse and business are perfectly fine with him and me. It's different. You're going to end hurt and honestly James, I can't fix everyone's life. I just want to be in bed with the man I like, Oscarwilde, some drinks and food. I'm not asking for so many things."

James grunted. Jared didn't understand it was easy to say that when he was looking the situation from the opposite side of the street.

"Do you want to fuck her?" Jared continued, "go and do it. I'm not putting a chastity belt around you or her, I'm just trying you to understand how things are going to end. Married couples hardly ever divorced, believe me I know what I'm saying. Remember Fred? I fucking loved Fred and he loved me, but he was married. It was a miserable marriage and yet, he didn't leave her. Well, you don't want to wait for centuries until the divorce, that never is going to happen, happens. You don't and it's a fact."

"She mentioned a divorce…"

"I bet she did. And not because she's a shitty person but because she was never in such situation. It's the hardest decision: a bit of happiness or the hope that he's going to change."

James didn't say a word and his brother put a hand in his arm "go back to Dublin until it's too late. It's going to hurt for a few days but it's going to pass quickly."

Tommy was in London as well. He left Arrow House nit longer after Jared left Birmingham despite he, Tommy promised himself that he wasn't going after Jared.

It was in his sister's house now and while Ada was playing on the floor with little Karl, she was talking to him as well.

"Polly told me you're busy with the Irish these days. I thought you said you didn't want nothing to do with them."

"Times change, Ada. They have access to the Americans in Boston. It's good for business."

"Fine. I just asked." Ada, same as Polly, was suspicious about Tommy's desires but she never mentioned it. Ada didn't know if Polly knew, but she was sure that his business with Alfie Solomons were more than rum and bread. But who was she to judge them?

"I need fresh air," he said suddenly walking to the door "see you later, Ada."

"See you, Tom."

No, he couldn't do that again. Not with a man, no matter how nice and warm he was.

He had sex with women, he tried to fall in love with more than once but it didn't work. And always he tried to convince himself that it was because he was too young or too busy to pay attention to them. But then, in France, the touch of a soldier showed him how different it was a man from a woman and how much he enjoyed it. But then horrors came and him, Freddie and Dan had to dig out to survive and behind him, underground, was left the soldier that showed him a new world.

For years after the war, he visited whores to have sex because he convinced himself that she liked women like Arthur and John. If his brothers were normal, he was too.

And then Alfie appeared. Alfie and all his mannerisms and way to talk. Alfie and his loud voice and laugh. Tommy couldn't say that was love at first sight but definitely it was something like that. Married as he was, in love with his wife as he was, Alfie made room in his heart for him. And even when those two years were awful because their relationship meant the sadness of Rose, Alfie gave him something that no one else before him gave to him: love.

And yet, the Jewish man chose his wife over him.

So, why he was there in London after a new man? What would be different for him if he never was lucky? Jared Walsh was a handsome man who seemed to be comfortable with who he was, and probably was flirty with dozens of men besides him.

And it was this thing, Tommy thought as he kept walking through the noisy streets. The fact that he enjoyed male lovers didn't mean he was homosexual. He wasn't, he couldn't be! If Arthur and John liked women, then he liked women too.

Tommy went to a whorehouse and paid for a girl, but they didn't do anything because he never had an erection, no matter how much he tried.

"It happens all the time," the girl said patting his shoulder "don't worry."

Tommy hid his face between his hands. He wasn't homosexual.

"I'm not!" he yelled, furious , full of anger. But no one heard him because not even the prostitute was there to accompany him.

He left the building not looking at anyone. His mind was spinning around the same thought over and over again.

"I'm not homosexual. I'm normal."

fair warning this will either seem like incoherent rambling because my thoughts are hard to formulate or just me wanting to be rude about the sequels past we love katamari despite never playing them (i wrote this line after i finished the whole post)

anyways im about to list alot of king's outfits over the games and then rate them on 1) whether i like them personally (partly removed from context), and 2) whether i think they actually fit king. im doing this for absolutely no fucking reason and honestly im scared ill be very wrong or biased but im mnot being paid to do this for gods sakes im writign a tumblr post. i wont get cancelled for getting king incorrect. anyways

katamari damacy

1#: yeah i like it. he looks stupid and i like it. the cape and whatever the collar is called, in combo with the chain and gold accessories looks so silly. he doesnt look like a king besides the crown. he looks like he wants to be cool but doesnt know what that means but he knows nobody will question it cuz hes the king after all.

headdress: perfectly over-loaded. you have way too much going on. you dont need those blinking lights. and you really dont need those patterns and colors. can i try it on

2#: well its hard to say since this is the first one. and of course the first one fits him cuz. its the first one. but i think it gets his impression off very well. its a prussian blue v neck and a golden chain, with sort of maroon tights and a golden belt with the face of a lioness. bracelets and rings, and of course the triangle ruffle collar and purple flower pattern cape. its a mixed warddrobe, kind of silly, i think it works well with how you cant really take him seriously, too. rude and hurtful, yet also he. dresses like this. a kings crown, cape and collar, but his personal style underneath it. also expresses how he may be king, but hes not really taking that as being his role - rather, being himself means to be king. or being king is like, a side thing, not as important as just doing what he wants. maybe a bit of a reach, dont know if i managed to explain what im feeling properly... also, his actual clothing besides his headress isnt actually complicated, which is an interesting contrast. you would think he wants you to pay attention to his face, and not his body. he is egotistical, it makes sense that he wants you to look at him and pay attention to him in general, but the emphasis on his face is interesting.

headdress: absolutely fits. very extravagant in a way that works. the colors arent bright as hell either, which im glad they did because if they were neon and too flashy itd look too obnoxious. well itd look bad but also hes not about exactly "standing out". he loves attention, but he still has his style, and that style IS colorful, but not neon. i think it fits him well, it teeters on being over the top and subtle at the same time, like complex embroideries perhaps

we love katamari

1#: also like it. has the same color scheme of blue top and magenta purplish bottoms. though here its a bit less saturated and lighter in color. the flowers on the sleeves are a nice touch since hes no longer wearing his flower cape, and the golden ankle ring, as hes wearing nothing on his hands but his wedding ring.

headdress: neat!! i like this more than katamari damacy, but just because its kind of cute. well i like them both, but this one is easier to draw (lol) and the color scheme is nice. the lights are now flashing from the spaces of color, instead of looking like round lightbulbs, if that makes sense, and it seems more casual this way, somehow.

2#: it kinda fucks me up. but judging king in we love katamari, from how different he is compared to katamari damacy, this outfit seems kind of perfect to showcase how (almost eerily) laid back he seems to be in we love. his ruffle collar is now smoothed out, its wiggly instead of sharp. hes wearing a very wide sleeve light cyan top, a purplish flower on each sleeve, with a squiggly cut on the lapel, open to reveal his chest and a golden chain, with a piece that looks perhaps like a flower attached to it. he now has a band wrapped around his waist instead of the golden belt, with a golden lioness head piece holding it in place. lighter wine color tights. its so- i dont know. king starts off obviously excited at the fanbase and attention hes getting, so its curious he puts down the iconic outfit and gets into something so comfortable. he wants to stand out less, all of a sudden. its still very much a king outfit, but he dropped so much, i wonder why. hes laying back as usual to let prince do his work but hes really leaning into it now. not just that, but he seems almost less hurtful than katamari damacy. more open. hes still full of himself, but its toned down, muted. his occasional interjections talking about his childhood and papa are offputting in the sense that its unusual. and this outfit is unusual, too, in comparison. katamari damacys impression is that hes pompous but a bit silly (and also just a dick), we love katamaris impression is that hes egoistic- but aimless. he seems more forgetful and more lost in thought. the cape missing could also be symbolic of his openness, even if a bit cheesy. i noted that his cape might also hold some emotional weight similar to the crown, but thats based on my feelings.

headdress: reflects the casuality. its got a smaller color palette now, less patterns, and more flat spaces of color. reminds more of his headdress patterns in his childhood. its also longer now, but i dont have anything to add for that.

me & my katamari

this is where i start to get a bit iffy in general. the games are no longer directed by keita, and king doesnt actually progress any. he stays the same or changes purely because different people are writing his dialouge. me & my katamari seems to have no story otherwise, or cutscenes, even - so from here on i suppose i do get biased but there isnt much character to go off of. however- i did not play any of the games besides the first two, so i am watching gameplays.

1#: i think its alright. i dont really like the combo of colors, it feels weird with the super yellow thin cape, but it is a swimsuit style thing. i wish they changed the collar, though, or outright removed it. it feels wrong to be in there.

headdress: ehh too neon, doesnt help with colors.

2#: this is. alright, its ok. the swimsuit is relatively simple too, thought the yellow cape doesnt seem like something hed wear, especially since its supposed to be a swimsuit- a cape would make it very hard to swim, though kings zaniness could get him to wear a cape if it means looks over functionality. it isnt his normal cape of course, though im a bit sad the flower pattern is entirely missing here, or even a hint of it. instead its a swimsuit.. something... with wine and orange, and what looks like a necklace. its not a necklace exactly, but i dont know the name for this. its also got a lioness head. i dont really get the golden armband around his left arm, but eh. i think its passable overall but straying further from kings personality, though given he is just like. having a splash and having fun. and it is skin tight, which isnt really that important, but its not swimming boxers or something. swimming suit still with a touch of decency. i guess it wouldve been repetitive if this one also had a v cut, but to continue onward from we love katamari, if it had to be real casual and open as a sort of conclusion to we love katamari, i could imagine something similar to this swimsuit, but its a one-piece that covers his legs and chest but leaves his arms free. idk though. i also added this bit in an edit, so now im starting to think about actually sitting down and redesigning it, but im uh. not able to rn. and you cant save edits as drafts. oh well.

beautiful katamari

1#: really very stupid looking. i think the sleeves and puffy pants are very funny but boy i dont like this. dont really like the colors. id try it on myself tho. again, with the wiggly collar- this straight up just doesnt change in all games after we love katamari.

headdress: meh. not a big fan. its getting a bit boring now.

2#: not sure what to say. king wouldnt wear this. its really not his style. it looks more like a jesters outfit, and the lack of shoes makes it look even stranger. the weird random opening that shows a bit of his stomach is also a bit nonsensical, alone in terms of how the hell this piece of clothing works. the pants are too puffy- stripes arent something that make sense as a pattern for him. and the whole theatrics thing, with king talking to you from behind curtains he opens up, on a stage like background, feels out of character. hes not one for theatrics (literal). he likes admiration but he performs by showing off what he can do physically, not through theater or a play. not that its said he does, but the theater bit is just weird. doesnt fit him as a character.

headdress: in combo with the outfit it just doesnt make much sense, it doesnt really harmonize. its alot of shapes and colors, but not with much consideration. the colors seem to be random. the headdress and outfit are kind of at equilibrium with how much they catch your attention. obviously the headdress is more saturated and in game it has blinking lights, but you do have to look longer at the outfit, and it kind of sticks out with how it seems like such a weird pick for him. also it is just kind of a silly looking thing. maybe im just looking too hard though.

also ill b real im just getting more mad at the gameplay. the physics are missing and the katamari feels way too fast and responsive, which is frustrating me, and the game is basically back to basics with you and king and nobody else, which makes kings lines disappointing, but once again, i handle watching a game and playing it differently, and i already have bad feelings about the sequels besides we love katamari as they arent directed by keita, and king is such a specific character. the gameplay part is irrelevant though but it is making me want to watch it less. lol.

katamari forever

1#: curious! i like this outfit, removed from context. i cant say i like it as a king outfit at all, but i just like this type of outfit. fucking. no idea what that thing hes wearing at his collar is called but i have a little soft spot for that thing. hehe. dont care that its a king outfit though.

headdress: i like the colors! its mainly blues, purples and greens, but i like it. the patterns work fine for me. still boring though.

2#: this is hard. katamari forever has a bit more substance, but the whole plot literally is that king loses his memories. though he IS wearing this before he loses his memories. he has dialouge as he has levels, but technically, roboking is the main character in this. doesnt really matter, you can choose between either of their levels at free will i believe. thissss outfit is. sssssss. i dont know. the direction its taking with the fancy dandiness isnt out of place for *a* king, but it is out of place for *the* king of all cosmos. his suit and whole shebang being so bright is incredibly juxtaposed to his comfy darker pallette of katamari damacy and we love katamari - yet hes still the same character? hes not changed. he still belittles prince for low scores and small katamaris, still pretty egotistical. his outfit doesnt reflect anything on a deeper level. if anything just reflects a change in taste, but thats really not that interesting. theres cutscenes (finally) but these say nothing as hes asleep in those cutscenes. so theres nothing more to pull out of that. his responses to low or high scores seem to be mostly the same, and rather short, to be honest. when he requests something, its also pretty short. theres not alot to take out of that.

touch my katamari

1#: scared. scared of touch my katamari. i dont like this outfit but also i just dont like kings 3d model. like i dont need to tell you his face his scary and uncanny looking. its not that bad in this image but if you see even one closeup of his face its just. uncomfortable. his collar is sharp and triangle-y again, though.

headdress: i like the hearts hehe. thats about it though. dont like the fabric overlay over the texture, was kind of unnecessary. i want to spare you from looking at a closeup of the kings face though.

2#: man i dont know bro

im also getting tired and Hooo shit look at the time. i know i shouldnt do these things but you know how it is. i dont know why i did this, to be honest, but i just felt like talking a bit. my mind is a little too full on things around the cosmic family(s) and im already thinking more about queens family. oh well. i have no idea whether to tag this. i suppose i would conclude it here, despite the indeed dry touch my katamari review... this is just my little thing for me. im sure if i tag it with the katamari tag Nothing bad will happen. im going to sleep.

amazing katamari is just a mobile endless runner so theres no story but i will say: i like this! its cute! its simple, and a combo of the katamari damacy and we love katamari outfits. yea its not special, but its ok! though again with the collar... would've liked if they kept either one or the other collar piece. but thats about it, no deep analysis. i just think this render and art style is cute in general, so exclude this from the review. headdress is neat too. again nothing special but atleast it isnt so neon, mainly pinks purples and blues. completely taking it as being cute art though.

bonus AGAIN:

roboking. there will be no outfit review its just king but robo. hes also an entirely different character anyway so an analysis doesnt make sense. but i like that his belt looks stupid and his colors go pretty well, purple yellow blue. and that his eyes are always angled down. i just like robots. all im putting him here for is to say i think his pathetic self is entertaining and i kinda wish katamari forever was better. it couldve been good. but yeah ending this off with sad little roboking. thanks for reading. bye bye

What is 2024 going to be like?

As of this moment, I have been out of work for a year and five months.

I decided that I would invest the time into building something I could do on my own, that I love doing. I've hosted events off and on since 2004 and made a little money. I've had a ton of one off projects that didn't make that much money. I could do a ton more events, which are a ton of work and sometimes very little return. I love podcasting. However, I have four shows currently, none of which make any money and all of which aren't getting enough traction to justify making it a full time thing.

I was on Youtube one day and came across this young woman who is crushing Youtube Shorts right now. I mean simply killing it. She has over 22mil views and a ton of subscribers, from just doing shorts. She was being interviewed and laid out her secret to making her videos and that's when I decided that I would delve into youtube seriously. Because it combines a lot of things I love doing and if I succeed, I can funnel some of those people into other things I'm doing like podcasts and events.

So, I am working currently on soaking up the appropriate knowledge (I've already taken a few certificate courses on YouTube Shorts and Chat GPT and a 5-day YouTube Challenge by Sean Cannell), and starting to formulate what my content will focus on. I experimented with some existing content I had to see how it would play. I decided that I needed to start fresh, even if it's just some simple videos. Once I start I just need to do a video or two a day, every day. I am going to start posting possibly tomorrow.

What will 2024 be? It will be reinvention. I think I just need to work for myself. So diving into content is what I am going to do. Youtube, IG and TIktok will be my focuses. I will also create some tshirts and hoodies to sell. But first things first, YouTube. I want to startt by making $1000 a month and work up from there. I want to make 500k by end of the year.

and its all like machinary themed but still fleshy in there and he jumps into this elevator going into the stomache and this flesh dude pulls him out bc ig thats part of the imune system and hes like hey u cant do that yank.

but going down there is the only way to get the save file so our protag tries again. cant rly explain to this imune system dude tho so the imune system dude thinks hes trying to comit susicde and is trying to console him on the conveyer belt. and describing whatl happen if he does go down there. protag dosnt care hes saving reality hes doing what he must.

Hope heads home in a fog an hour later. What in the world was that? Was kissing her the right thing to do? She wasn't sure now. She didn't mean to startt anything. And now she has her friend, at the very least, courious. That wasn't her intent.

She walks silently into the house.

"Hope." Her foster mom calls out.

"It is me." She enters the kitchen where she is chopping vegetables.

She stands beside her and goes to help her. She needs to tell someone. And Amy is the most logical person. But she can't do it looking at her. So with her eyes on the cutting board, she tells her what happened.

"I know. I shoulda asked. And I didn't expect her reaction."

"No. I guess not. So what now? How did you leave it?"

Hope sighs, graps a rag to wipe her hands, and takes a seat at the table before answering her.

RETHINKING THE MODULAR

Een systeem moet niet bedacht worden, je kan het overal vinden. We verdelen oppervlakten in grids, ruimtes in kamers en tijd in ritmische delen. Modulaire structuren kan je overal herkennen, ze zijn als een hulpmiddel om te communiceren. Het is niet de bedoeling om een universeel principe te ontwikkelen, maar om makkelijker te kunnen communiceren tussen verschillende systemen. In het boek “Rethinking the modular” staat een kort interview met Nathalie Du Pasquier en enkele andere kunstenaars/designers die afwijken van de norm. Hieruit haalde ik mijn inspiratie om het interview aan te vullen met enkele extra vragen en quotes van Nathalie.

Nathalie haar werkt beanwoordt aan het modulaire toen ze nog werkte als textielontwerper en designer voor Memphis. De vele patronen die ze ontwierp hadden een bepaalde eigenheid gekregen, terugkerende vormen en figuren. Ze pasten perfect in de denkwijze van de Memphis Group “opvallend en verhoudingen die volkomen verstoord waren.” Nathalie haar tapijten zijn wonderschoon, haar exuberante dessins komen het best tot zijn recht in een interieur waar simpel meubilair staat in gedempte kleuren. Haar tapijten zijn dan ook een van de meest succesvolle producten van Memphis gebleken.

 Vooraleer we starten over alternatieven, kunnen we ons eerst afvragen of er wel nog een soort van alledaags design bestaat dat nog vraagt om een alternatief. Alles is redelijk divers dezer dagen. Het gewone, alledaagse manifesteert zich op veel manieren. Ik zou wel graag meer te weten komen waarom je je hebt geïnteresseerd in het zoeken naar alternatieven, ook waarom je iets produceert en het materiaal waarmee je werkt?

NdP: Ik startte met werken als een designer in 1980 en ontwierp toen veel textiel. Die textielen beantwoorden in een zekere zin aan het idee van het modulaire. Niet zo lang geleden heb ik ook opnieuw patronen ontworpen. Natuurlijk, als ik nu een design maak, start ik vanuit een ander ontwerppunt dan wanneer ik vroeger begon met het ontwerpen van patronen, ik heb het al even niet meer gedaan. Ik ben nu meer geïnteresseerd in de constructie van ruimtes en objecten. Die dienen als model voor mijn tekeningen en schilderijen. Ik ben in de eerste plaats een schilder, maar ik bouw ook sets. Mijn constructies creëren relaties tussen volumes en ruimtes – eigenlijk ook wat gebeurd in architectuur, op een andere schaal weliswaar.

Je startte met schilderen als alternatief van het textielontwerp …

Inderdaad, ik koos voor schilderen als een alternatief omdat het me iets geeft waar ik dan compleet verantwoordelijk ben voor wat ik doe. Ik kende helemaal niets over schilderen, ik zag het als een avontuur en heb het mezelf aangeleerd.

 Denk je dat je eerste werk als designer je heeft beïnvloed in de manier waarop je kijkt naar design en je werk als schilder?

Ik wou echt helemaal weg van de design wereld. In feite, mijn eerste schilderijen waren niet eens presentabel. Ik wou enkel een volledig andere manier van leven.

   De andere reden dat ik stopte met  werken in de design was omdat ik het gevoel had dat we omringd werden door zoveel dingen, zoveel objecten, zoveel designers, zoveel industrieën. In de plaats was ik meer geïnteresseerd in dingen gebruiken in mijn werk dat al bestond, kijken naar bestaande objecten en gebouwen. Als je een alternatieve manier wil vinden om te kijken naar het leven, dan weet je eigenlijk niet waar dit naar zal leiden. Natuurlijk, kunst kan geen producten of gebouwen vervangen, maar je kan wel op een andere manier naar die producten en gebouwen gaan kijken. Dat op een andere, meer poëtische manier. En ja, ik denk dat ik in het werk dat ik de afgelopen jaren gecreëerd heb, de designer af en toe naar boven is gekomen. Om deel te nemen in de constructie van mijn stillevens.

 Waarom en hoe kan je gezien worden als iemand die alternatieve dingen maakt?

Ik denk wat ik doe is ook een reactie op al de dingen die ik niet leuk vind. Op die manier is het wel een alternatieve manier van werken. Elke manier van creatief werk, is alternatief op zijn eigen.

 Naast het ontwerpen van zetels, vazen, tapijten en alles dat we rondom ons zien, zouden designers een alternatieve toekomst moeten ontwerpen als onderdeel van hun werk?

We zijn verantwoordelijk voor onze wereld, zelfs verantwoordelijk voor iedere actie dat we ondernemen. Om alternatief te zijn of iets alternatief te kunnen ontwerpen, moeten we weten wat we afwijzen, zelfs als je niet weet waar alternatieve routes of ideeën naar kunnen leiden.

 Je hebt ook enkele capsule collecties ontworpen, onder andere voor HAY, Valentino, American Apparell en onlangs ook voor Mutina. Hoe kijk je hier naar, om terug in de huid van designer te kruipen?

Voor Hay heb ik onder andere geborduurde en geprinte kussens ontworpen, ook handdoeken behoorden tot de collectie. In 2017 heb ik samengewerkt met mijn man voor Valentino. Piccioli, creatief directeur van Valentino, wou met zijn collectie twee verschillende culturen naast elkaar plaatsen. Zo kwam hij uit bij victoriaanse figuren en levendige patronen. Deze manier van werken is zeer postmodernistisch. In mijn ogen is het dan ook heel interessant om te zien hoe twee werelden kunnen samenkomen.

Ik zou wel nooit deze ontwerpen maken in 1980, maar het is nog steeds ik die ze ontwerp. Mijn stijl is niet zodanig veranderd.
