What is 2024 going to be like?

As of this moment, I have been out of work for a year and five months.

I decided that I would invest the time into building something I could do on my own, that I love doing. I've hosted events off and on since 2004 and made a little money. I've had a ton of one off projects that didn't make that much money. I could do a ton more events, which are a ton of work and sometimes very little return. I love podcasting. However, I have four shows currently, none of which make any money and all of which aren't getting enough traction to justify making it a full time thing.

I was on Youtube one day and came across this young woman who is crushing Youtube Shorts right now. I mean simply killing it. She has over 22mil views and a ton of subscribers, from just doing shorts. She was being interviewed and laid out her secret to making her videos and that's when I decided that I would delve into youtube seriously. Because it combines a lot of things I love doing and if I succeed, I can funnel some of those people into other things I'm doing like podcasts and events.

So, I am working currently on soaking up the appropriate knowledge (I've already taken a few certificate courses on YouTube Shorts and Chat GPT and a 5-day YouTube Challenge by Sean Cannell), and starting to formulate what my content will focus on. I experimented with some existing content I had to see how it would play. I decided that I needed to start fresh, even if it's just some simple videos. Once I start I just need to do a video or two a day, every day. I am going to start posting possibly tomorrow.

What will 2024 be? It will be reinvention. I think I just need to work for myself. So diving into content is what I am going to do. Youtube, IG and TIktok will be my focuses. I will also create some tshirts and hoodies to sell. But first things first, YouTube. I want to startt by making $1000 a month and work up from there. I want to make 500k by end of the year.

so i jump thru a portal of some kind and it takes me to this tropicalish wetlands reiver were im meeting him. at thius point i reveal i can just shapeshift in general so like ok cool whatever.

some irelevent dream stuff happens and im partially in the water and theres these giant fish and someone goes oh no pirahnahs and im like no, piranahs r small and reltivly harmless to living creatures actually.

but like these weird fish r still there so its like ok, then the dude is there and aparenlty industrialism has goten wildlife fucked up and its a big secret. but suposedly thats also how i can shapeshift i tell him. at this point ive turnd one of my arms into a long alien tentical and i have tenticales sticking out from under the dress im wearing.

so its this big thing. and uh, lil time skip here more dream stuff that dosnt translate to awakeness.

so at this poijnt its kind of revealed that the end of the world is coming from higher forces. this dudes wife desends like and angel and shes holding this rly fleshy blobby constantly shifting baby that also has a halo made of flesh. she tells me their name is angel and the world would have already been ended if angel didnt come to like the world and decide not to.

so now angel is the only thing that can stop whats coming. its all baby themed for some reason. theres this didy as the dreams changes perspective to show the armies coming that goes like “we must fix it from the startt!”

everythings super body horrory at this point to anyway his wife tells me abt his daugter aparently angel has been watching over her for a long time and thats why angel dosnt wana doomsday stuff..

and so aparntly the daughter likes to eat in bed at night and thats cool but ig some of the doomsday babies came down and stated force feeding her and she nearly died. and idont want to describe it bc it was in incredibly sigurbing detail involing a tube and shit anyway so angel comes in later to find this out and angel is rly upset

so angel tells her mom and there out to stop this doomsday stuff.

cue one of the ppl on bord mentining glitter. hes been infected. the infection spreads rapidly thru the ship till one person remains who has to jump onto this device and start searching for the save file on a shrunken down earth.

they find it. but this dude whos like a rectangle gets hungry and eats it. so our protag has to, jump thr the screen and go INSIDE this dude all shruinks down.

and its all like machinary themed but still fleshy in there and he jumps into this elevator going into the stomache and this flesh dude pulls him out bc ig thats part of the imune system and hes like hey u cant do that yank.

but going down there is the only way to get the save file so our protag tries again. cant rly explain to this imune system dude tho so the imune system dude thinks hes trying to comit susicde and is trying to console him on the conveyer belt. and describing whatl happen if he does go down there. protag dosnt care hes saving reality hes doing what he must.

imune system dude gets crushed in the converyer as some rly sad music plays and the protag reaches the end of the convery. and thats kinda were i woke up.

right. if this is long and sappy whateVER okay,,, but really i dunno where to startt but here we go anyway. first off, he’s really hardworking. i can say it for the rest of seventeen too, but even though we’ve been told that he sleeps a lot, it probably to make up for the nights that he hasnt and all the nights he’s been stuck in the recording studio just working on the next song. he makes me really happy even if i get a small moment of seeing him speak or talk or just stand there, when i listen to albums i take time to let his angelic voice sink in, i like the moments he’s goofy and all stupid in, its especially cute when he starts to laugh and clap at the same time. he’s always isolated to being aggressive and cold(?) but to be honest this boy just needs all the love in the world. his tiny mannerisms make me giggle, theres so much talent within him and so many charming points, his members know to follow him to get the best result and he also considers listening to what the members want to do, he cares so much for the group and puts in all he can to make sure their next song is a hit which, they always are when they guy gets loud he gets loud and i love seeing that! from his smile, to his eyes, to his fingertips and toes he’s truly an all-rounder. he never fails to surprise me and honestly, i just want to thank him for everything he’s done and worked for ever since he was a trainee years ago in that small green practice room to the admirable man he is now. i really want him to see his worth and potential because to me he’s everything ive asked for

Hope heads home in a fog an hour later. What in the world was that? Was kissing her the right thing to do? She wasn't sure now. She didn't mean to startt anything. And now she has her friend, at the very least, courious. That wasn't her intent.

She walks silently into the house.

"Hope." Her foster mom calls out.

RETHINKING THE MODULAR

Een systeem moet niet bedacht worden, je kan het overal vinden. We verdelen oppervlakten in grids, ruimtes in kamers en tijd in ritmische delen. Modulaire structuren kan je overal herkennen, ze zijn als een hulpmiddel om te communiceren. Het is niet de bedoeling om een universeel principe te ontwikkelen, maar om makkelijker te kunnen communiceren tussen verschillende systemen. In het boek “Rethinking the modular” staat een kort interview met Nathalie Du Pasquier en enkele andere kunstenaars/designers die afwijken van de norm. Hieruit haalde ik mijn inspiratie om het interview aan te vullen met enkele extra vragen en quotes van Nathalie.

Nathalie haar werkt beanwoordt aan het modulaire toen ze nog werkte als textielontwerper en designer voor Memphis. De vele patronen die ze ontwierp hadden een bepaalde eigenheid gekregen, terugkerende vormen en figuren. Ze pasten perfect in de denkwijze van de Memphis Group “opvallend en verhoudingen die volkomen verstoord waren.” Nathalie haar tapijten zijn wonderschoon, haar exuberante dessins komen het best tot zijn recht in een interieur waar simpel meubilair staat in gedempte kleuren. Haar tapijten zijn dan ook een van de meest succesvolle producten van Memphis gebleken.

 Vooraleer we starten over alternatieven, kunnen we ons eerst afvragen of er wel nog een soort van alledaags design bestaat dat nog vraagt om een alternatief. Alles is redelijk divers dezer dagen. Het gewone, alledaagse manifesteert zich op veel manieren. Ik zou wel graag meer te weten komen waarom je je hebt geïnteresseerd in het zoeken naar alternatieven, ook waarom je iets produceert en het materiaal waarmee je werkt?

NdP: Ik startte met werken als een designer in 1980 en ontwierp toen veel textiel. Die textielen beantwoorden in een zekere zin aan het idee van het modulaire. Niet zo lang geleden heb ik ook opnieuw patronen ontworpen. Natuurlijk, als ik nu een design maak, start ik vanuit een ander ontwerppunt dan wanneer ik vroeger begon met het ontwerpen van patronen, ik heb het al even niet meer gedaan. Ik ben nu meer geïnteresseerd in de constructie van ruimtes en objecten. Die dienen als model voor mijn tekeningen en schilderijen. Ik ben in de eerste plaats een schilder, maar ik bouw ook sets. Mijn constructies creëren relaties tussen volumes en ruimtes �� eigenlijk ook wat gebeurd in architectuur, op een andere schaal weliswaar.

Je startte met schilderen als alternatief van het textielontwerp …

Inderdaad, ik koos voor schilderen als een alternatief omdat het me iets geeft waar ik dan compleet verantwoordelijk ben voor wat ik doe. Ik kende helemaal niets over schilderen, ik zag het als een avontuur en heb het mezelf aangeleerd.

 Denk je dat je eerste werk als designer je heeft beïnvloed in de manier waarop je kijkt naar design en je werk als schilder?

Ik wou echt helemaal weg van de design wereld. In feite, mijn eerste schilderijen waren niet eens presentabel. Ik wou enkel een volledig andere manier van leven.

   De andere reden dat ik stopte met  werken in de design was omdat ik het gevoel had dat we omringd werden door zoveel dingen, zoveel objecten, zoveel designers, zoveel industrieën. In de plaats was ik meer geïnteresseerd in dingen gebruiken in mijn werk dat al bestond, kijken naar bestaande objecten en gebouwen. Als je een alternatieve manier wil vinden om te kijken naar het leven, dan weet je eigenlijk niet waar dit naar zal leiden. Natuurlijk, kunst kan geen producten of gebouwen vervangen, maar je kan wel op een andere manier naar die producten en gebouwen gaan kijken. Dat op een andere, meer poëtische manier. En ja, ik denk dat ik in het werk dat ik de afgelopen jaren gecreëerd heb, de designer af en toe naar boven is gekomen. Om deel te nemen in de constructie van mijn stillevens.

 Waarom en hoe kan je gezien worden als iemand die alternatieve dingen maakt?

Ik denk wat ik doe is ook een reactie op al de dingen die ik niet leuk vind. Op die manier is het wel een alternatieve manier van werken. Elke manier van creatief werk, is alternatief op zijn eigen.

 Naast het ontwerpen van zetels, vazen, tapijten en alles dat we rondom ons zien, zouden designers een alternatieve toekomst moeten ontwerpen als onderdeel van hun werk?

We zijn verantwoordelijk voor onze wereld, zelfs verantwoordelijk voor iedere actie dat we ondernemen. Om alternatief te zijn of iets alternatief te kunnen ontwerpen, moeten we weten wat we afwijzen, zelfs als je niet weet waar alternatieve routes of ideeën naar kunnen leiden.

 Je hebt ook enkele capsule collecties ontworpen, onder andere voor HAY, Valentino, American Apparell en onlangs ook voor Mutina. Hoe kijk je hier naar, om terug in de huid van designer te kruipen?

Voor Hay heb ik onder andere geborduurde en geprinte kussens ontworpen, ook handdoeken behoorden tot de collectie. In 2017 heb ik samengewerkt met mijn man voor Valentino. Piccioli, creatief directeur van Valentino, wou met zijn collectie twee verschillende culturen naast elkaar plaatsen. Zo kwam hij uit bij victoriaanse figuren en levendige patronen. Deze manier van werken is zeer postmodernistisch. In mijn ogen is het dan ook heel interessant om te zien hoe twee werelden kunnen samenkomen.

Ik zou wel nooit deze ontwerpen maken in 1980, maar het is nog steeds ik die ze ontwerp. Mijn stijl is niet zodanig veranderd.
