#can’t help but recognize how kieran is a fantastic unspoken representation of autism #i see a lot of myself in him and the way that he is so isolated and lonely and yet cannot help but perform and find solace in his daily #routines is so heartbreaking in its own way to me. like no matter what you do or where you are you have no choice but to be yourself and fun #nction the only way you know how and it will never not be vastly different from everyone else. and when you’re surrounded by people who DONT #like you and will not accommodate and are not at all willing or curious in understanding WHY you are the way you are you’re left to just ….#live in your own head forever. i’m certain kieran thinks many wonderous things and sees the world in a beautiful light and i know this becau #se i am autistic myself and because of that i see the world in colours that neurotypical people will never comprehend but we’re never allowe #d to see the world through kieran’s eyes. we are never allowed to see where his heart rests or the poetry he waxes or what he believes or wh #at his triggers are or what’s a stim and what’s just habit or anything. anything. the breeze sounds different to him and he can hear birds f #or miles and the sun makes every hair on his arms tingle and that’s why he wears layers everywhere and every green he sees sings a beautiful #song to him and yet we’ll never know. because he is too different even for the van der linde gang. he is incomprehensible to them and he doe #s all of his 4/5 daily tasks over and over and over again and while he would always do them and will always do them because they are innate #to him no one will ever know just what they mean to him. no one will ever know that kieran duffy can distinguish the horses behind him by th #eir breathing cadences behind him as he scrubs the spare saddle with the sun high above his head and he can know when something is wrong bec #ause he can hear it. no one will ever know that he CAN read but the only thing he’s interested in is books about wildlife and horses and fis #h in particular and no one will ever know because he knows no one will ever understand or even care and if they do they’ll be sure to make #it a point to tell him how DIFFERENT he is. and realistically even if the vdl’s DID come around to liking him he STILL would NEVER be unders #tood. i know for certain he would always be described as odd and despite its new affectionate approach he would still be the odd one out wit #h his daily routines and his texture preferences and his inability to make eye contact and his erratic seemingly random triggers and his #anxiety that seems to have a mind of its own. no one would ever know how bright the tree leaves are in his eyes or how every horse smells di #fferent or why sometimes it’s more fun to reel his rod in over and over instead of actually catching a fish. he will always be …. different.#sorry. novel moment. he means a lot to me.#i’m not super happy with how he looks in these but i’m just trying to draw more :’) i always say that but i always mean it too #also if my novel makes no sense then just ignore it. it’s late and my head hurts. i tend to get tangential #rdr2 #red dead redemption 2 #kieran duffy #image #art #hero draws sometimes

#mine musings #liveblogging link click #link click #okay the metaphor thing works out a little bit in that. it's on brand #70% of what we know about liu xiao are implicitly gained from other characters #e.g. how xf and ltc relate to him. how the liu family talk about him. how he thematically juxtaposes other characters like lg and cxs #the 30% are the things we know explicitly from him e.g. he's a rich kid with a sports car. he can hear heartbeats #he wants to merge the parallel lines or whatever #the rest are inferences like. oh okay no parallel lines? he doesn't like uncertainties i guess #the way he talks about friendship with xf and ltc? he values a transactional view of relationships #(maybe because transactions imply a certain level of certainty?)#he's the current favored child of the liu family but he wasn't before #he's a “manipulator” but really that's mostly from marketing stuff and implications from canon #like. we know a lot about him but at the same time we don't #the way we just know his uncertainty -> certainty thing contrasts with lg's certainty -> uncertainty thing #we know his heartbeat hearing implies he knows everyone's level of sincerity and both xf and cxs exist as foils to that #the hunter thing with ltc. why does he believe that?#lots of “bringing the darkness” lines in three of his songs for some reason #so like. i can't say that the show hasn't told us anything. they have but in circular ways #we don't know much about him from him directly but we do. know stuff. kinda. do you get me #all i want from YE6 is veinxiao friendship being shown so i can have new dimensions on how lx views friendship #and maybe like. a hint at what his motivations are. like why is he Like That #<- again funnier if he's just Like That from the womb. even if the liu family isn't fucked up he's still Like That #but that's not this show's style so probably not #lx notes #like the INSISTENCE of writing lx as a point of comparison or through other people's perspectives and very rarely from his own #is fascinating to me

Throwing my hat into the elves and culture discussion, I think one of the things that I find most... upsetting is _what_ Bioware took from Judaism to make their elves. Which is to say, not a lot. What they took was Jewish history - ghettos, diaspora, and blood libel. The bad parts. Stuff about our oppression. Not stuff from Judaism as a religion or Jews as a culture. We don't get to see elves celebrate any cognates to Jewish holidays. There's no equivalent of kashrut or Yiddish or Ladino (despite that not making sense with the Dales being around for four centuries). The two most defining features of Dragon Age elves, the vallaslin and the Evanuris, directly contradict Jewish teachings. Jews started writing down our history and laws as soon as we lost our homeland and independence to Babylon, but it's written into the fabric of Dragon Age that the elves didn't, and their story is one of obtaining a lost past, not preserving a remembered one. It's even indicated that the city elves largely worship the Maker.

In thoughtful hands this could be a story about how Jews are seen as a religion when it's convenient to oppress us one way and a race when it's convenient to oppress us another, but it's not. Instead the impression I am left with is that in the mind of Dragon Age, Jews are defined solely by our oppression.

this came up earlier when an anon asked about making an elven oc from a (marginalised) cultural context they themselves aren’t from and i think it always comes down to a question of whether oppression and suffering are the only things you’re interested in or whether you care enough to learn about community, family and joy. and bioware seems to fail to clear this bar every time it comes to the elves.

i truly think some of the most incredible work in this fandom has come from fans putting those things back into the setting.

#coding can be good! it can be meaningful! it doesn’t have to be tropey and only focused on violence and loss!#fine. make an alienage. but tell us about their cultural traditions! festivals! what do they eat? what songs do they sing?#‘we do what we can to remember the old ways’ is what we have the alienage culture codex saying. so where are they?#if the old ways are fading then what new traditions have come about in diaspora?#btw the other codex from that hahren refers to the evanuris as the ancient gods & ‘THEIR prophet’ & ‘THEIR maker’ as impositions.#implying the andrastianism may only be a veneer. which *could* be an exploration of something like dönme & sephardic jewish populations #facing forced conversion while trying to covertly practice their own religion.#that’s always been my read of the ‘andrastian’ alienage & digging into turkish dönme history for uh. reasons. has only reinforced that read #u could do something with that! maybe tabris has more insight into the alienage culture! sprinkle in those ‘old ways’ the codices mention!#but we don’t get to see ANY of that even playing as a tabris except a dagger named after fen’harel. okay. sure thing bioware 😐👍#<- that is WAY too much yapping from me sorry. thank you again for sharing ur perspective!!!#bioware critical
