The relentless negativity about AEW in certain spaces on the Internet is so bizarre.
I've been watching wrestling for a very long time, and I have done a lot of complaining about it in that time. However, people usually complain loudest with the show is actually bad. The negativity around AEW is completely divorced from the actual product, which is somewhere between pretty-good-to-great.
Like, I need you to understand, people complained about WCW because it got really bad. It really started with them retreading a tired nWo storyline to continue to feature Hulk Hogan (after ending their megastar Bill Goldberg's epic winning streak) but by the end they were giving guys like Mike Awesome a "Fat Chick Thriller" gimmick and making Sheriff Dewey from the Scream movies their world champion.
From about 2006 to, like, last year, WWE just beat their tropes into the ground. Every women's and midcard title feud was "X beats champion in nontitle match." Storylines frequently went nowhere. Plot points would get completely dropped as Vince was insisting on changing plans right up until the shows aired. People would get promo videos but then never debut. Vince bought up your favorite indie wrestlers but never used them, collecting toys so that no one else could play with them. Roman Reigns is the top guy in wrestling now, but it took five absolutely, grueling, miserable years to get there as they sent this poor man out there to do twenty-minute promos before he was ready and they were death. There were bright spots, but a lot of it was not fun to watch.
AEW, however, has been loads of fun! Even the maligned Devil storyline with MJF was mostly bad due to circumstance (CM Punk's firing and Cole/MJF's injuries totally derailed whatever plans they had). But I watch the shows. I have fun. People who watch the shows are excited about things. You go to shows live, and the crowd loudly cheers the faces and boos the heels. No one is hijacking the show with protests like crowds did frequently during mid-2010s WWE shows. Fans really seem to be largely satisfied.
And people who actually watch the shows have very different criticisms than what gets blasted in the comments every time AEW posts something on a Meta platform.
I want to be clear that criticism is fine. You are allowed to be a fan or a critic or even decide AEW isn't for you and talk about why it is bad. However, the relentless, constant barrage of negativity online is just echoingly hollow. It doesn't seem tied to what AEW is actually doing at all, like they are criticisms emerging from echo chambers of people who just decided to be grumps for some reason because they heard some asshole on a podcast maybe. I know we are in a "vibes-based economy" now, so the vague shifting feelings of what people perceive the perception to be matters more than reality for some reason. And I know some of the negativity generates clicks and views, but I'm not sure what you get out of it if you aren't making a buck.
It's all negativity that just sounds so very, very out of touch.

WRESTLING ALL STARS: Heroes and Villains : JUNE 1996
A LOOK AT THE LADIES! Female Managers are the New Trend in the Sport.
By George Napolitano
[Woman is rumored to be returning to WCW as we go to press. That would put her right smack in the way of Miss Elizabeth.
Will Miss Elizabeth’s surprise return establish her as the First lady of Professional Wrestling?]
Have you noticed how many female managers there are these days? It’s absolutely mind boggling. What was once a profession dominated by men has now been overrun by women!
Heading the list in Sensuous Sherri. Sherri has been managing much longer than her counterparts, and in her illustrious career Sherri has guided quite a few men to super-stardom! Sherri began her managerial career in the AWA, and men under her influence have won titles in the AWA, WWF and WCW. Sherri was the first person to notice that Shawn Michaels had what it takes to be a champion. And even though her “Boy Toy” didn’t win a title while under her guidance, Michaels credits Sherri with instilling in him the moves, style and attitude that have catapulted him to the top.
Goldust, the bizarre character who is the new WWFIntercontinental champion, didn’t get to be the champion on his “gay” mannerisms and good looks. The Director, Marlene, had quite a bit to do with directing the bizarre Goldust to the #1 position. It’s believed that Marlene orchestrated Goldust’s entire look and persona, even going as far as directing Goldust’s intimidating “Crush” on Razor Ramon. Now that Goldust has the IC title his Director must be given due for orchestrating the entire thing.
[Sunny’s gym attire drives males nuts. Whenever she keeps the opponents from concentrating, she helps the Body Donnas: Skip & Zip]
The person emulated by many of the new breed of women managers is the sexy, alluring, beauty known as Woman. Woman has been around for quite a few years. Before maturing, she was known as the Fallen Angel. She was brought into the sport in the mid eighties by Kevin Sullivan. Later, she became known simply as Woman, and she was instrumental in taking Doom to the top. After her success with Doom, Woman gained notoriety as Ric Flair’s manager, and this arrangement lasted a couple of years. After a short time in retirement, Woman returned to the scene and she immediately helped the Sandman win the ECW heavyweight title. Although she is still with the Sandman, there is a strong possibility that Woman could soon be Macho Man’s new lady.
[Bad Girl: Miss Alexandra is a real hell-cat who is part of Damian Kane’s Bad Crew.]
No one can deny that Sunny of the Body Donnas is the driving force behind her team’s success. Although the Body Donnas have yet to win a title, Sunny has created quite a bit of excitement in the WWF. RIght now Sunny wants to help her team to the WWF tag team title, but if Skip and Zip are unsuccessful in their title quest, look for Sunny to dump them and hook up with someone who will produce a championship.
Kimberly, the Diamond Doll, began her career as Diamond Dallas Page’s main squeeze but after a falling out with DDP, Kimberly wound up in the corner of his arch-rival, Johnny B.Badd. If Page ever changes his evil ways, KImberly could be back in his corner.
[Freaky Francine loves leather, as does the tag team she manages, the Pit Bulls.]
Beulah and Francine from ECW are two of the new breed of women managers. Both are young, beautiful and daring. Each has a tag-team title to their credit. Beulah with Raven and Richards and Francine with the Pit Bulls. Both of these ladies would think nothing of jumping in the ring and lending their men a helping hand. Using this approach, however, both Francines and Beulah have suffered broken bones and bruises, but this hasn’t stopped them in the least from helping their men.
[The lovely Miss Patricia has taken the Warlord and Rick Martel to championships. Can she do the same for The Border Patrol.]
The “Brooklyn Babe” Miss Patricia is another relative newcomer to the managerial ranks. Although PAtricia hasn’t been around that long, she still has two championships to her credit. The Babe was in the corner when the Warlord won the USA heavyweight title, and she was also in Ric Martel’s corner when he won the USA belt. Presently, Miss Patricia is doing her thing in the USWA where she is managing the Border Patrol.
[Sherri was the first person to notice that Shawn Michaels had what it takes to be a champion.]
Bad Girl: Miss Alexandra is part of Damian Kane’s Bad Crew. She’s a real hell-cat who’s been known to do anything imaginable to assume that her Crew comes out on top. With Bad Crew now a part of ECW you can bet that it won’t be long before Miss Alexandra gets the recognition that she craves.
Destiny is another in the long line of beautiful and daring female managers. Destiny has been guiding the career of Damien Storm in the NWA and she is also Jerry Lawler’s female attendant whenever he wrestles in New Jersey for the NWA.
Last, but certainly not least, is the latest addition to the managerial ranks, the lovely Elizabeth. On January 24, after more than five years away from the wrestling scene, Elizabeth returned to the sport at the Clash Of the Champions in Las Vegas, Nevada. Elizabeth was at ringside to manage her former team “The Mega-Powers”: Hulk Hogan and “Macho Man” Randy Savage in their battle against Ric Flair and the Giant.
[Sister Sherri (left) had her wedding to Colonel Park disrupted by the colonel’s “cupcake-on-the-side”: Madusa!]
In the early eighties Elizabeth was all the rage! She was instrumental in helping “Macho Man” Randy Savage become the star that he is today. The two eventually married in center ring at Madison Square Garden during a Summer Slam card, but their story book romance eventually crumbled. Afterwards, Liz left the sport, while Randy continued on to even greater heights.
Elizabeth’s appearance at the Clash caught the wrestling world completely off guard. Although it had been rumored for months that Elizabeth was going to return, no one really believed that it would ever come to pass. Now that Elizabethe has climbed back into the ring, everyone is wondering if that was only a one-time thing or a sign of things to come.
From this it is obvious that the female managers are giving their male counterparts a run for the money. With the success that these female managers have enjoyed we should be seeing even more join the ranks in the coming months.

𓆩♡𓆪 episode two: The Torch.
first day on the job and y/n is already a needle mover??? icon behavior fr fr. i know it took a little for this ep to come out but i rly hope y’all like it 🫶🏽 it’s also kinda long my bad i got carried away lmao lmk what y’all think tho‼️
“i have an offer to make”
this couldn’t be bad. …well
it’s Vince McMahon. only so much can go wrong.
“surprise me” you challenge.
“so, one of our women, Alundra Blayze to be specific, she hasn’t been .. the most cooperative. we haven’t been seeing eye to eye exactly regarding her contract and we’ve decided to terminate it. that means tonight will be her last Raw” he said.
you could feel that he was pointing to something, but to be completely honest, you had no idea where this was going. again, this is Vince McMahon, anything can happen. you’ve heard of Alundra before and have seen some of her matches. she’s pretty damn good.
Vince leaned back in his chair, “I have no issue with her leaving the company, the only issue is that she’s currently the women’s champion, and she’s considering signing with WCW” he explained.
“okay..?” you mumbled, confused.
“I want you to become the women’s champion” he stated.
your eyes widened, and you aggressively blinked shocked at what he was saying. “you want me as champion?” you ask, he nods. “this quickly?” you ask again and he nods. he looked a bit angry and seemed quite pissed at the fact that Alundra is leaving.
“has anyone won a title on their debut match, like .. ever?” you ask
“why don’t you be the first one?” he suggests.
that sounded insane. it two ways.
you were concerned about how Alundra would react to being stripped off of her title. did she know this was going to happen? was she okay with it? not that it mattered really, it was her last day her anyways, but you couldn’t help but over think.
on the other hand, you felt giddy. excited. you were going to debut, and win the women’s title on the same night? sounds like absolute fun. hopefully the WWF crowd reacts well, you just needed their support and that’s all that matters.
“are you sure this is a good idea? i don’t want the crowd to turn on me on my first day” you hesitantly say. he shakes his head, “don’t worry about it, they’ll love you. i just need to know if you’re on board” he says.
“i’m in” you say, you can almost see the cogwheels turn in Vince’s head as he looks down at his desk.
“i have a lot planned for you, you know?” he says, half zoned out. you smile, “that’s great to know”.
2:37 pm, catering.
“so what did Vince want?” Lita asked. should you tell her? it’s not like she’s not going to know, everyone will at the end of the night.
but what if Vince was using this as an opportunity to know wether or not you’re the type to blab about plans publicly?
“Y/n?” Chyna asked noticing you zoned out, “oh, we just talked about my debut later” you answer, sipping on some orange juice. you weren’t exactly lying, but you also didn’t want to spoil the show.
“that’s cool” Chyna said, “i hope we work with each other a lot” she added. “yeahhh” Lita smiled. “is this what you’re wearing later?” Chyna asked. you look down at yourself, you completely forgot that you’re still wearing your unofficial gear.
“i’m still figuring it out” you fix your hat, “i want something that’ll scream ‘y/n is here!’ y’know” you say. Chyna hums, “i think you should get something custom made” she suggests.
“any ideas?” you ask, Lita sits up. “shorts! but leather, kinda like same design as my pants, but shorts, y'know. and a top like Chyna’s, keep the coat ‘cause it looks cool” Lita says.
“i think the top should be white instead of black, to make it resemble you New Japan gear” Chyna said. “oooh, what if i wrap a white ribbon around the hat and wear white boots with my name on them?” you propose. “see that sounds pretty!” Lita says.
the mental image of that looks really pretty. “how am i supposed to get those done quickly though?” you ask.
“i have someone that’ll do it, don’t worry about it” Chyna winked.
these two are the real ones.
all three of you continued chatting about random segments and matches Chyna and Lita had, until you were interrupted.
“excuse me Y/n?” a staff member approached you, “yeah?” you reply, “there’s someone who would like to see you” he stated.
you look back at the girls concerned and they mirror your look, “okay” you say getting up. you walk behind the staff member down the hallway, until you’re lead to the … rehearsals ring hall?
“there” he pointed towards one of the rings, “thanks..” you say slowly stepping in. you walk towards the ring the man pointed at, and you can see someone sitting there. they look at you, getting up and leaning against the top rope. is that…?
“you’re Y/n, right?” she asked.
Alundra Blayze.
the blonde had a smile on her face, but you can tell she looked tired. “yeah! nice to meet you!” you smile, stepping in between the ropes. she gave you a hug which took you by surprise a bit, but after all, you’re the one taking her spot as champion. you might as well warm up to each other.
“i’m assuming Vince told you..?” you say, you both sit down on the ring mat. she chuckled, “i wish he told me directly” she began. “overheard him discussing it with one of the producers” she explained. your eyebrows furrowed in confusion, if he can tell you directly, he can tell her too.
“well that’s rude” you say taking off your hat putting beside you. “and unprofessional” she adds. “i wanted to discuss with you our match later, ‘cause if i’m gonna go out, i wanna go out with a bang y’know?” she said. you nod, “oh yeah, i get it”.
you both began building your match. Alundra would go out and issue an open match to any who wished to get a shot at her title, then you’d come out. you were responsible for the highflying spots in the match and she would bring in some technical wrestling.
you both found yourself fantasizing about spots you’d like to do, it felt really good knowing that you both were on the same page before even meeting each other.
she seemed like such a sweet person, you couldn’t help but feel a bit sad about her leaving.
“Y/n” she said, she look very determined yet a bit upset. there was change in the air. everything felt very serious all of a sudden. “yeah?”
“i know we barely know each other, but i want you to promise me” she began, placing her hand on your shoulder. oh, this is that kind of serious.
she got up and jumped off of the ring, you couldn’t see what she was doing but she seemed to be grabbing something. as soon as she sat back down next to you, you knew where this was going.
she placed the women’s championship between you.
“do not let this belt lose it’s value” she said, looking deep into your eyes. “i’ve seen a lot of your work in Japan, and i know what you’re capable of. Vince never took women in wrestling seriously, and I want you to change that. I want you to be that change” she explained.
“there’s no place for women in this company” she sighed “but there soon will be, i trust you with the championship. I hope you can put some respect on our name in this industry”.
it felt like a lot of weight was placed on your shoulders, but she was right. you’re here to wrestle and to make a name for yourself. everyone deserves respect in this business, everyone. women deserved a chance, and it’s time to make some changes around here.
“I promise”.
9:00 pm, RAW.
“it’ll only be six minutes, and that’s the end of it!”
you and Alundra just left gorilla after arguing with Vince about your match. he wanted it to only be six minutes but the match you planned was twenty minutes long, now way will you have even began the match at the six minute mark.
you both were very fucking angry. this was Alundra’s last match was your debut match, the least he can do is be a little generous. but okay.
okay.
you knew what you were going to do, this match is twenty minutes and it will be twenty minutes, because you fucking said so.
“what are we gonna do now?” Alundra asked. it wasn’t looking good for you two, but what looked good was tonight’s card.
UNDERTAKER VS. GIANT GONZALES
THE HART FOUNDATION VS. THE ALLIED POWERS
*ALUNDRA BLAYZE VS. Y/N Y/L/N (women’s title)*
OWEN HART VS. THE RING MASTER.
1-2-3 KID VS. RAZOR RAMON
FAROOQ VS. GOLDUST
BIG VAN VADER VS. BAMBAM BIGELOW
D'LO BROWN VS. AHMED JOHNSON
SYCHO SID VS. SHAWN MICHAELS
your match was right after the Hart Foundation's and you knew you could get Bret to do something. now, you weren't going to ask him to talk to Vince about it, because if you're the one wrestling and he's doesn't want to listen to you, he obviously will not listen anyone else.
"stay here, I'll be back" you say. you quickly jog your way to the men's locker room as show had began and the first match was about to start. you knock on the door and Bret and Jimmy come out to. "I need y'alls help" you breathe out.
you explain the predicament that Vince put you in and they are both visibly agitated by Vince's decisions. "now, I may be asking for too much but is there anyway you guys can shorten your match?" you ask.
both men are quite for some time, and it feels like all it's over.
Bret hums, "how much time do you need?" Jimmy asks. you're a little surprised, "wait really?" you ask, "and don't worry about Davey and Lex, I'll tell them" Bret said, hand on your shoulder. "like ten, twelve minutes" you say.
"you got it" Jimmy said.
"I owe you one, big time" you sigh, "don't stress it" Bret pats your head.
both men make it back into the locker room and you can hear Bret call out to Lex and Davey. thank god for them.
you jog back to Alundra, who was anxiously standing where you left her playing with her hands. "I bought us time! we'll do it all" you smile and Alundra physically relaxes. "thank fuck, oh my god". you quickly run her down through what's going to happen, before hearing your name being called from down the hallway.
you look behind you and it was Chyna and Lita, "just another moment please'" you say. you head in their direction and they spot you. "what's up?" you ask, "your gear is ready!" Chyna says handing you some folded clothes, "c'mon, I need to see you in it" Lita enthusiastically said.
everything was going great.
9:20 RAW.
you and Alundra closely watch the boys' match, you look down at your watch. it's going to end any moment now, right now, come on...
Bret slipped through the ropes and landed outside the ring, the referee ran out to check on him, and almost immediately held up the 'X' sign. you both jump to your feet, "we should stand by gorilla, right?" Alundra asked, you didn't hear what she said. you were concerned that Bret was actually hurt, but a part of you wanted to believe that that was his way to end the match early.
"y/n?"
"h-huh? oh yeah, let's go"
as soon as you approached gorilla all you could hear is chaos. from doctor's rushing to check up on Bret, to Vince freaking out over the time that was going to be wasted.
you pass by Davey, Lex, and Jimmy who winks at you.
he must be okay.
"BRING ME Y/L/N AND BLAYZE!" Vince bellows, "WHERE THE HELL ARE THEY? WE CAN'T STOP HERE!" he screams. you smirk at each other, before entering gorilla with innocence as a halo above your heads.
"what happened?" you ask, lips in a barely visible pout and brows furrowed. "is he okay?" Alundra asks referring to Bret. "LISTEN, listen. I need you two to go out there right now" Vince explained, "the show can't stop." he adds.
it was so funny seeing him panic over an episode of RAW, what would he have done if this was a pay-per-view?
"can we use up the extra time?" you ask, Vince answers without thinking, "do whatever the fuck you want, just put on a goddamn show!" he says settling back into his seat.
"are you sure?" Alundra asks, "will you draw me money?" Vince asks. you quickly nod, "you got it" you say.
less than a minute later, Blayze was out in the ring. you fluffed you hair and adjusted your boots. 'Y/N' was written on them, on the waistband of your new shorts and the ribbon on your hat.
you breathed in, then out. you felt more excited than anything.
"to any woman back there, if you want to try to beat me for this championship, this is your chance. come at me, no disqualifications, so you can do whatever you want. this is an open challenge and any of you are welcome" she boasted.
the tips of your fingers began feeling tingly, and you couldn't contain your smile. you began fiddling with the microphone you were handed.
then your New Japan theme hit.
as you walked out onto the ramp, your pyro went off, and that was the loudest crowd pop you've ever heard. it was so loud, and they cheered for so long. the fireworks made for such an amazing visual, and your titantron displayed your standing at the top of the ramp with a huge smile.
it felt so good being in front of a crowd again.
you walk down towards the ring, and bring the microphone to your mouth. "you said anyone?" you smirk, and crowd cheers again.
"anyone." Alundra nods.
you both throw your microphones to the ground and you slide into the ring. you take off your coat and hat, and the referee rings the bell.
and to say that the fans were invested in every last thing you two did, would be an understatement.
from every kick, to every punch. every flying elbow to every submission hold. this was the first women's match to truly feel like one in a hot ass minute, and they way you were fighting each other made it feel like the title meant something to you both.
it was so fun. it was your first night here and the fans felt fully invested in your match.
and everything got more interesting when the fight moved outside of the ring. you picked Blayze up and put her right through that damned spanish announcement table, to a thunderous pop. Jim Ross and King Lawler's commentary made it all the better.
you threw her back into the ring and locked in and 'Bank Statement', and another pop deafened you. you were facing the main camera, and Alundra began reaching out to the lower ropes only for you to shift your weight on her and move your legs to stomp on her hand. the crowd cheered again.
she held on for as long as she could before tapping out.
and just when you thought the crowd couldn't get any louder, they did. you pull away from Blayze and the referee calls for the bell to be rung, the arena felt like it was on fire.
you stood up both hands in the air, and the referee announced you as the winner. Alundra stood up and asked for the referee to give her the belt.
you both stood in the middle of the ring as she handed you the belt, successfully passing the torch. you both hugged and by now the crowd was chanting your name.
you pull away from her, "thank you" you smile as you raise her arm up.
9:42 pm, backstage.
you knew you had gone over the time you had, even over the extra time you were given and you were ready to take the tongue lashing you were about to get for it.
you walk through the curtains into gorilla, and what you saw scared you a little more than it should've. Vince was sat in his seat in front of a monitor, with a smile that could've stretched from ear to ear. you and Alundra look at each other nervously.
"uhm.." you begin as you walk up to Vince, "was that alright?" you ask. "alright?" he asked, "that was fucking phenomenal!" he said, and the relief that washed over you was unmatched.
"that was hands-down the best women's match I've ever seen! it was so good, and all the spots - especially that table one - were fantastic and fans clearly loved it." he praised, he walked over to you and gave you a hug, then shook Alundra's hand. "I should've listened to you" he said, head a little low.
you smile, good. great.
you walk to your locker room, championship slung over you shoulder. you could pat yourself on the back right now. you saw something hang off of your door, it looked like... a paper? as you got closer, you realize it was note. you grab the little yellow paper and read what's written, it was a little hard to read since the handwriting was a little messy.
'I'd like to have a word with you' - Undertaker.
huh?

Royal Rumble Marathon: 1994
We’re rumbling into 1994.
Spoilers for past Rumbles.
The undercard:
Tatanka vs Bam Bam Bigelow (accompanied by Luna Vachon). Another okay Rumble match for Bam Bam. I like Bigelow but his Rumble matches are rather uninspiring. Let’s talk about Luna – an underappreciated and underrated woman of wrestling, From 1990 to 1993, it was slim pickings for women in North American wrestling (Japan is a different story – the joshis were on fire in this era). The 1990 to 1994 era had three of the all-time greats (Sherri, Luna, and Woman) dominating the scene. Madusa, Missy Hyatt, and Elizabeth made sporadic appearances, but it was the trio I mentioned above that dominated the WWF/WCW/ECW scene. Luna’s first run in the WWF had a great if short-lived feud with Sherri but she was never used to her full potential. Luna could have had a fantastic feud with Madusa but it didn’t happen. Luna’s second run with the WWE was a complete waste of her potential. Jobbing to Sable? Seriously? The fact that Luna was never a WWF women’s champion is a crime against wrestling. Her WWF career can be summed up as “wasted potential”. At least she’s in the Hall of Fame. Still waiting for Nancy to be recognized for her contributions.
Recap video of the worsening relations between Bret and Owen Hart. One of my all-time favorite feuds in wrestling.
Bret and Owen Hart vs the Quebecers (accompanied by Johnny Polo aka Raven). Fun match – let’s be honest, Bret and Owen don’t have bad matches. The match continues the road to Wrestlemania and the classic Bret vs Owen match. Bonus feature of a non-grunge/alternative/goth/etc Raven.
Referees and other officials attend to Bret as Owen rants into the camera.
To quote Owen: “And that’s why I kicked your leg out of your leg!”
I.R.S. (Mike Rotunda) vs Razor Ramon (Scott Hall). Another win for the Bad Guy.
A way too long Undertaker/Yokozuna recap video
Undertaker (accompanied by Paul Bearer) vs Yokozuna (accompanied by Mr Fuji and Jim Cornette) in a casket match that sees everyone and their grandmother interfere, specifically: Crush, the Great Kabuki, Genichiro Tenyru, Bam Bam Bigelow, Adam Bomb, Jeff Jarrett, the Headshrinkers, and Diesel (Kevin Nash). Taker loses due to the interference of eleven men. Taker doesn’t sell the defeat long as he disappears from the casket in a mist, reappears on the screen, mumbles nonsense that would make the Ultimate Warrior proud, and ascends in a cloud of smoke. Both meh and stupid at the same time. So many people were involved in this match that they might as well have started the Rumble early. I think the recap video and the aftermath lasted longer than the match itself. Remember when Yokozuna was booked as a monster heel? Yeah, me neither.
Comments from various participants in the Rumble: Savage, Jarrett, Tatanka, Diesel, Doink and Dink, Shawn, Luger.
The Taker-Yoko match must have run too long because Vince announces that due to time constraints there will be 90 seconds between entrants as opposed to the traditional two minutes. I’m telling you; they should have started the Rumble during the Yoko-Taker match.
The entrants, in order of appearance:
Scott Steiner
Headshrinker Samu (accompanied by Afa)
Rick Steiner
Kwang (aka Savio Vega, accompanied by Harvey Wippleman)
Owen Hart
Bart Gunn
Diesel (Kevin Nash)
Bob Backlund (Backlund was considered “old” during this era but he was the same age as the current generation’s main eventers)
Billy Gunn (Tenyru and Kabuki are attacking Luger backstage. Why? I don’t know, I guess all foreign wrestlers must attack men in patriotic tights).
Virgil (per the commentators, he’s the alternate for Kamala)
Randy Savage (Time to see if Randy has finally grasped the rules of the Rumble)
Jeff Jarrett
Crush (Brian Adams)
Doink (accompanied by Dink)
Bam Bam Bigelow (making his 3rd appearance of the night, accompanied by Luna)
Mable (aka Visera, accompanied by Oscar)
Sparky Plug (aka Bob Holly, the alternate for the 1-2-3 Kid who is out with a knee injury)
Shawn Michaels
Mo (Men On A Mission)
Greg “The Hammer” Valentine
Tatanka
The Great Kabuki
Lex Luger
Genichiro Tenyru
Bastien Booger (aka Norman from WCW, apparently, he was “sick” and never came out
Rick “the Model” Martel
Bret Hart
Samu of the Headshrinkers (accompanied by Afa)
Marty Janetty
Adam Bomb (accompanied by Harvey Wippleman)
Bret and Lex eliminate each other to end the Rumble. The refs argue over whether Bret orLex won the Rumble. Jack Tunney enters the ring and declares the event a tie. But who’s going to Wrestlemania? To be decided.
The camerawork had a big “miss” when Diesel was eliminated. The commentators hyped up that Shawn helped the group eliminate Diesel from the Rumble. All the viewers saw was Michaels standing back and hesitating to join the group. At no point did we Shawn assist in eliminating Diesel.
First-time Rumblers: Scott Steiner, Rick Steiner, Kwang, Bart Gunn, Diesel, Billy Gunn, Jarrett, Crush, Doink, Bam Bam Bigelow, Mabel, Sparky Plug, Mo, Great Kabuki, Lex Luger, Adam Bomb
No one received entrance music, not even the first two entrants.
Random/Surprise Entrants: Great Kabuki, Genichiro Tenyru
Big Man Goes On A Rampage Spot: Diesel
Unite To Throw Out The Heavyweight Spot: Diesel, Mabel
Feuds in the Rumble: Shawn-Marty, Lex – Tenyru/Kabuki
Rating: 4 out of 10 (and the four goes to Bret and Owen, without those two this event is entirely skippable). The Taker-Yoko shenanigans went entirely two long, Kabuki and Tenyru are reduced to generic foreign heels allied with Fuji (or so were told by the commentators, we never see the pair interact with Fuji onscreen but all three are Japanese so they must be connected, right?), average at best undercard matches, even the Rumble itself is boring. My recommendation: watch Bret and Owen’s bits, skip the rest.
Wrestlers and others who have passed away: Howard Finkel, Bam Bam Bigelow, Luna Vachon, Owen Hart, Pat Patterson, Joey Marella, Gorilla Monsoon, Scott Hall, Paul Bearer, Yokozuna, Mr Fuji, Crush, Virgil, Randy Savage, Crush, Mabel, Jack Tunney
Total number of deceased individuals: 17 (tied with the previous year)

Reviewing the All Elite Wrestling personnel 2024 Edition (Part 1) -
PUSH -
We'll start with a new talent in AEW who has a lot of upsides and little requirement to believe as a top female in the division. The match between her and Jamie Hayter should be protected as a huge clash of power vs power with a time-limit draw followed by another one to emphasise the league these two ladies are in - it's not a difficult formula to focus when you have fans willing to buy into it. Kamille should be heavily protected and whilst it is easy to compare her to Wardlow the truth is at one point Wardlow was the most important guy in this company. Anyone can be the guy of AEW but it'll be better if Kamille can distance herself from the most expensive waste of money AEW has burned this year - especially if they paint it as Kamille's only protecting her because she can be comfortable as 2nd best whilst Kamille goes for No.1. If Kamille can even wrestle the guys then I could see her becoming the first ever female TNT champion - I mean weaker people than Kamille have held it. Make her demolish every former female AEW champion and you'll have new fans.
Congratulations to the only veteran who gets it - Christian Cage is a rare talent these days. He can stay relevant without having to schedule like he's in his 20s or 30s. He's 50 now. He did the time, the work, the many many matches. He's been to the top. He deserves all the credit for being healthy and smart about his choices in wrestling. His 4th decade in the business and he doesn't look or sound washed up. He's turned Chicken-s*** into Chicken-salad with Killswitch and Nick Wayne. He's a literal miracle worker for AEW. When he eventually decides to hang it up I hope to all the powers one can believe in he gets to be Head Booker for AEW.
Far be it for me to support a lot of Tony Khan's originality given much of it is born from his desire to play out an e-fed in real life, but if there's one cardinal rule about a promotion is you pick an original talent, you strap a rocket to them, and you see if it works. Goldberg was WCW's decision and it ultimately became the defining part of its success and failure. The trouble with Hologram is he has absolutely no promo skills and his look doesn't distinguish himself from many other smaller high flyers including the recent Ricochet. All he can rely upon is being protected in an undefeated winstreak but long as he keeps it, stays healthy, and wrestles enough, people will remain interested. Never forget there was a time a guy like Eddie Kingston was red hot despite the fact he lost all the time, looks like a living tin of beans, and didn't wrestle to impress - personality can go a long way. If Hologram could be built up from the backs of others praising him it'll circumvent his problem.
It seems every year I'm almost ready to finally give Kris Statlander her fair dues and yet something happens to deny it - simple fact is Willow is a better Kris Statlander. Throughout the year she has been a cornerstone of the women's division and if it doesn't have her rewarded by the end of next year with a world title run then Tony Khan doesn't understand wrestling. As mentioned above, Kamille and Jamie Hayter are the big money but so is Willow's involvement in the title hunt. The women's division is far more impressive than it is being allowed to showcase and stacked with excellent talent given how many established talent have not been mentioned. Willow could be plugged into participating in any match with any top talent and thrive.
All but confirms the Don Callis Family is Team Taz 2.0 - a litany of great talent all around and with 'The Protostar' Kyle Fletcher the growth is immense. If he stops trying to be a high-flyer and focus on being a power wrestler, mixing it up with a more complete moveset, bulk his body up, you could envision him as a modern-day He-Man! I mean Triple H! I am not kidding - his biggest challenge is to be his own big-time player rather than let others mould him. He has an improved look, his promos are getting more serious and intense, he's got the size and aptitude to get better, and there's no downside other than the general hang-ups of AEW wanting certain types of wrestlers. Build around him in a way AEW doesn't build around guys - if anything make him the counter-wrestler to AEW's cliche style and you'll have a genuine future star.
Bless her for perseverance. It would of been easy to have given up on her during her time in the Dark Order, the Jericho Appreciation Society, being associated with Jack Perry, or her shoulder injury burdening her growth. So much stood in her way and yet she's still standing despite it all. It hasn't run her off or made her look less capable and to survive this long deserves some reward since she's now tenured enough to be taken seriously - she has a superstar look, no doubt, and her wrestling has certainly gone up a notch. She just needs to somehow figure out the promo skills and she'll easily be the woman to replace Mercedes as TBS Champion (or maybe if they ever do a Tag division with the ladies finally have Tay Melo join in). I think everyone is naturally rooting for her success since she's been an underdog for so long.
AEW is running out of known homegrown talent to make better over burrowing established talent to ruin. Thankfully they have an incredible prospect who has been tearing it up against the likes of Ethan Page, Shawn Spears, likely to be managed by the great MVP, and looks to be destined to be the next big star of the promo-wait what do you mean he's not in AEW? Hold on…checking notes…oh sorry I had this dream where Trick left and AEW treated talent by the merits of their ability and thought Ethan Page had stayed and anyways AEW is making so many belts I must of forgot NXT isn't a better RoH in every way…ironic given how NXT was just RoH for a time. My bad.
Not my favourite at all and personally felt he would flounder but color me corrected he has something weirdly unique. In many ways I could echo what I said about Willow, inserting him into any match with a male talent, and he'll do well. Juice is due for a push and was part of last year's match of the year. This year he's returned and has not been given enough screentime to elevate him to a level of serious contendership beyond supporting titles. A singles run may be in the future for him if he remains focused. Underrated promo, look, and overall wrestler.
The irony is there are moments I had him in the GET RID OF catagory for some of the most ridiculous bridge burnings I've ever seen to other companies but if there's one person I can compare him to in terms of franchise player in AEW it is Darby Allin. I think Ospreay is going to work extra hard to prove AEW is not just a one-trick pony in terms of appeal but if he wants to keep up with his own ambition he'll need to work smarter too. He'll need to ultimately be the catalyst of showcasing other talent too and not be relied upon to be the only top talent in 2025 as the roster ages. If he can lead a new generation by scheduling and pacing his routine, adding less predictability to it, maybe he'll end up being an egoless Shawn Michaels. Time will tell.
Not as a wrestler though he didn't embaress himself after a 13-year layoff. No the value is in his voice and verbal wit. Commentary is yet another place aging badly and needs better talent but the one not to replace is McGuinness. There's not much else to say since he speaks for himself - unless you're put off by the accent there's no downside to his continued success in the commentary box. A wealth of knowledge too and a true student of the game. You know - the complete opposite of Excalibur.
There are many unsung heroes of AEW and referees are often overlooked until their careers are over or at the very least winding down. For me I notice - credit where credit is due - this is the one referee who has not been pigeonholed into certain matchtypes nor becomes insufferable due to personal antics - a steady success over many matches. He also is quick to step in and protect talent fars I recall. AEW desperately needs professionalism in all areas not just the talent everyone focuses upon.

Pairing: Diamond Dallas Page x Fem reader
Description: You and Page walk back to your shared hotel after a night out with the rest of the roster leading to a sweet moment on the fifteen minute walk
The bar was filled with the WCW roster from Nash, Hall, Hogan, and Goldberg to Eddie Guerrero, Sting, DDP, Rey Mysterio, and yourself along with many others the night was filled with celebration after an adrenaline filled night on Starrcade with you winning the women's intercontinental title from Malia Hosaka along with DDP becoming US champion and Sting becoming WCW champion and finally finishing his long battle against Hulk Hogan but also the neverending war between the NWO and WCW ending the NWO's control over the company and threatening the livelihood of everyone on the roster. After two hours you decided to head back to the hotel with Randy trying to walk back with you until sting stepped in to your much needed relief before an arm grabbed your shoulder only to turn and see Page behind you as he grabbed his jacket from the stool saying he was going back as well and would walk with you which sent a warm flutter through you before the two of you left the bar and began the fifteen minute walk from the bar to the hotel the whole roster was booked in for the next few days, "You did damn good" you looked at him and smiled at his words as the two of you slowly walked side by side as the wind blew and lightly rustled the trees as a comfortable silence washed over the two of you before a cold chill ran through you making you shiver which page noticed seeing that you had a light jacket on but you definitely were still cold and shivering as you watched the leaves fall off the trees knowing it truly was fall at this point. You were lost in your thoughts only to feel something brushed over your shoulders looking to see that page was putting his larger leather jacket with soft lining inside which made your heart flutter than shake erratically with a pink dust forming on your face as you turned to look at him with a sweet smile not even realizing that both of you had stopped walking until you were staring at each other taking in his facial features and the curls of his hair looking down when his hand gently grabbed and held yours, "You know for a bit now...I've had an eye on you" you were surprised by his words at him being attracted to you but him having feelings for you definitely caught you off guard but you had developed a liking to him over the last few months from random moments shared backstage to small talks in between traveling across the states and country all had slowly formed an attraction and feelings between the two of you which all came to a head now as he caressed the side of your face and your hand laid on his chest before you both leaned in and shared a soft kiss gently pressing your lips together before walking back to the hotel agreeing to have dinner tomorrow night giggling when you realized that you had accidentally taken his jacket but he didn't mind as he chuckled when he remembered that you had it on.

I was re-reading an old post of yours about RIc Flair, and I was wondering: what do you think makes it a proper world title? Is it just being the most important belt any promotion has (so, teeny-tiny ones can just say they have the world champion) or is there some measure of size or prestige (if such a thing exists in a fake sport) that a belt has to have before you can say you are an x-time world champion?
I've thought about this over the years, but I don't think a "proper" definition of a world title is possible in pro wrestling. Usage of the term within the business has become totally divorced from the literal meaning of the words.
Semantically, it'd be fair to say a "world title" is any championship with "world" in the name. Realistically, we might limit that to the promotions with a worldwide audience. But by this standard, ROH world six-man tag team champion Austin Gunn has a world title, and undisputed WWE universal champion Roman Reigns does not. And we instinctively know that's not right.
In the context that the term is used, a "world title" is clearly a promotion's main event championship, with the implicit assumption that only a men's world heavyweight singles title could be that top prize. So if we're talking about a 7-time world champion, we might mean Harley Race, but probably not Danny Hodge.
In the old says, the aura of a (men's) world (heavyweight singles) champion was that of a man who could carry the entire company, and defend himself in the event of a double-cross. The mentality was that the world champ had to be the legit toughest guy in an otherwise fake sport, because if he wasn't, someone might take a payoff to go off-script and break his leg. That all kind of faded away 40-50 years ago, but the perception that you have to be on a higher level to win a world title persists. So there's a sense that you have to be the top champion in a promotion big enough for it to mean something that you're on top.
Since anybody can call any championship a world title, there's no obvious place to draw the line as to which of them really matter. It seems to me, though, that a promotion has to have (or once had) nationwide exposure for its world title to be taken seriously. That sounds contradictory, to say that being a national-level promotion makes your top title a "world" title. But going by that definition we can count the top belts in WWE, AEW, WCW, the NWA, the AWA, New Japan, All Japan, Pro Wrestling NOAH, CMLL, the UWA, and AAA, which sounds about right. Of course, this would also include TNA, ECW, and ROH, which would be controversial, but any definition would put somebody on the bubble.
Going forward, I expect the top women's titles in those companies will be treated more and more like "world titles," not just in name but in terms of that tippy-toppy aura. And sooner or later I figure GCW and at least one British promotion to have the credibility to join the club. So even if we could settle on an objectively useful definition, it'll probably need to change within the next 10-20 years.

Joining The Family Business: Wrestlers Who Followed Their Families Into The Squared Circle Part 1
A lot of families have a business, including mine. It’s common for members of a family to take over and or follow their elders into a business after they retire. The is also a popular occurrence in pro wrestling. Over the years , there have been many families who’ve made a name for themselves within the business and have a new generation of wrestlers carrying the family name and creating their pwn legacies .
Hook ( Tyler Senerchia ) - 2nd Generation . Hook is the son of ECW and WWE Legend, Tazz. Both are currently signed to AEW , where Hook is a 3x FTW Champion and Tazz is a Color Commentator. The FTW Championship was created by Tazz in 1998 during his time in ECW.
Lexis King ( Brian Pillman Jr) 2nd Generation - Lexis is the son of WWE and WCW Legend, ‘ Flyin ’ Brian Pillman. King was signed to MLW in 2018 before being signed to AEW in 2019 and becoming a member of The Varsity Blondes alongside Griff Garrison and Julia Hart. Since 2023 , King has been signed to WWE and is currently in NXT.
Leati Joseph Anoa’i ( Roman Reigns ) and Matthew Tapunu’u Anoa’i ( Rosey) - 3rd Generation. They are the grandsons of Amituana’i Anoa’i and the sons of Sika and the nephews of Afa. Rosey is a one time WWF Tag Team Champion and Roman is the 4th longest reigning Undisputed WWE Universal Heavyweight Champion. Rosey passed away in 2017.
Leah Van Dale ( Carmella )- 2nd Generation . She is the daughter of Paul Van Dale . Paul Van Dale was mainly used an Enhancement Talent in WWE for their top stars. Van Dale was the opponent for Razor Ramon when he made his WWE debut in 1992. Carmella was signed to WWE in 2013 and is the Inaugural Ms Money In The Bank, 4x 24/7 Champion, 1x Women’s Tag Team Champion ( with Queen Zelina ) , 1x Smackdown Women’s Champion, 2019 Wrestlemania Women’s Battle Royal Winner , and part of the Mixed Match Challenge with R-Truth
Ashley Elizabeth Fliehr ( Charlotte Flair ) - 2nd Generation. She is the daughter of The Nature Boy , Ric Flair. She made two appearances in WCW in 1993 and 2000. Charlotte was signed to WWE in 2012. She is the final WWE Divas Champion, a 2x NXT Women’s Champion, a 6x and Inaugural RAW Women’s Champion, 7x Smackdown Women’s Champion, Participant in the 2014 NXT Women’s Championship Tournament, 1x Women’s Tag Team Champion ( alongside Asuka ) , 2020 Women’s Royal Rumble Winner ,5th Women’s Triple Crown Champion, 4th Women’s Grand Slam Champion
My Final Thoughts:
I’m writing this article series to explain wrestling family dynasties and how we have new stars out of each family . While working on this one , I never knew that Carmella was a second generation wrestler. I briefly discussed her father in my article about Razor Ramon. I’ll probably have part 2 up later.
Love You All,
- Kay
