Me: Fun fact: Did you know that every year, many Global North countries provide around 2 trillion dollars and millions of free products to the Global South under the guise of "foreign aid" in order to destabilize and crash their markets, and then impose regressive neoliberal economic policies on them, which makes them vulnerable to the exploitation of richer nations and causes further corruption, civil conflict, and global inequality
Him: I can tell why people think you're a bit "extreme"
Me: What why?
Him: See normal people's fun facts are things like "Did you know in Idaho, it is illegal to fish on a camel's back?"
Me: Yes...?
Him: and your fun facts usually ruin people's whole perception of reality.
Me:...I mean, these Global North countries take a net total of 3 trillion dollars from the Global South every year...they put pressure on smaller countries to provide them with cheap and exploitative labour and the WTO gets to set all the rules for international trades that benefit only the large rich countries. Soo like yeah facts tho, abolish the WTO, WB AND IMF

Option #1: Global Governance The incredibly complex challenges facing the globe today will require some form of global governance. So far, all we have is the UN, the WTO, the WB, and the IMF. We’ve covered criticisms of the UN and IMF in earlier sections of the course. The WTO and the WB face similar criticisms. But, what should we do? Should we abandon the idea of global governance and go for an…

Uuden ajan sanakirja
EBRD – European Bank on Reconstruction and Development, Euroopan jälleenrakennus- ja kehityspankki. Euroopan Unionin hallinnoima Maailmanpankkia vastaava instituutio, joka on kunnostautunut Itä-Euroopan ympäristöä tuhoavien ja puhdistavien hankkeiden rahoittajana.
GATT – General Agreement of Tariffs and Trade. Maailman kauppajärjestön ITA:n kariuduttua 50-luvun alussa monet maat kuitenkin laskivat hyötyvänsä maailmankaupan vapauttamisesta, ja halusivat perustaa GATT:in ITA:n suppeammaksi versioksi. GATT oli sopimus enimmäistulleista, jota uudistettiin useaan otteeseen vuosikausia kestäneillä neuvotteluilla, viimeisin niistä oli ns. Uruguayn kierros 1986-1994. Uruguayn kierroksen päätteeksi syntyi WTO, joka on siis GATT:in laajennus.
GMO – Genetically Manipulated Organism. Kasvi tai eläin jonka geenejä on muunneltu, yleensä tähän tai johonkin esi-isään on istutettu uusia geenejä alkiovaiheessa.
FDI – Foreign Direct Investiment, Suorat investoinnit ulkomailta.
IMF – International Monetary Fund, Maailman valuuttarahasto. 1944 Bretton Woodsissa perustettiin kolme instituutiota sodanjälkisen maailman vapauttamiseksi – kansainvälinen kauppajärjestö ITA, Maailmanpankki ja IMF. ITA kaatui Yhdysvaltain kongressin kieltäydyttyä allekirjoittamasta perustamiskirjaa, ja sille suoraa jatkumoa oleva WTO saatiin perustettua vasta 50 vuotta myöhemmin GATT-sopimuksen laajentamiseksi. IMF:n ero Maailmanpankkiin on lähinnä se että Maailmanpankki rahoittaa yksittäisiä hankkeita, IMF taas antaa valtioille lainoja lähinnä valuuttojen ja yleisen finanssitilanteen vakauttamiseksi. Näistä kahdesta IMF pyörittää suurempia rahoja ja on suurempi valtakeskittymä, Maailmanpankin aiheuttamat tuhot ovat enemmän paikallista laatua sen rahoittamien projektien alueella.
Maailmanpankki – IMF:n sisar, josta oli puhetta edellisessä.
MAI – Multilateral Agreement on Investiment, ”Monenkeskinen investointisopimus”. Vuonna 1998 laajaan kansalaisvastarintaan kaatunut yritys ”uudeksi maailmanlaiksi”, joka toteutuessaan olisi antanut ylikansallisille suuryhtiöille suuret oikeudet, muun muassa haastaa kansallisvaltioita oikeuteen jos he olisivat kokeneet tulleensa väärin kohdelluksi. MAI-klooneiksi kutsutaan uusia yrityksiä vastaavanlaiseksi sopimukseksi, joita poliittiset päättäjät eivät tietenkään julkisesti uskalla kutsua MAI-sopimukseksi.
Multilateraalinen – Monenkeskinen. Sopimus johon monta maata on sitoutunut, vastakohdat bilateraalinen ja unilateraalinen.
MIA – Maailman kauppajärjestön WTO:n investointisopimus, suppeampi kuin vuonna 1998 kaatunut OECD:n piirissä neuvoteltu MAI-sopimus.
NAFTA – North American Free Trade Agreement. Vuoden 1994 alussa voimaan astunut Yhdysvaltain, Kanadan ja Meksikon välinen vapaakauppasopimus, Euroopan Unionin sisämarkkinoiden rinnalla maailman pisimmälle kauppaa vapauttava sopimus. NAFTA- sopimukseen sisältyy paljon sellaisia elementtejä, joita yritettiin MAI-sopimuksessa saattaa koko maailman laajuisiksi, muun muassa yritysten mahdollisuus haastaa valtioita oikeuteen.
NTM – New Transatlantic Market, ”Uudet poikki-atlanttiset markkinat”. Haudattiin (ilmeisen väliaikaisesti) Ranskan kovan vastustuksen takia.
NTEP – New Transatlantic Economic Partnership, ”Uusi poikki-atlanttinen taloudellinen kumppanuussopimus”. NTM uuteen kuoreen pakattuna, Clintonin ja Blairin toukokuussa 1998 esittelemä hanke Euroopan ja Yhdysvaltain väliseksi vapaakauppasopimukseksi.
OECD – Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, teollisuusmaiden ”etujärjestö” joka jakaa jäsenilleen ohjeita esim. siitä miten työelämän joustoja kannattaisi lisätä. Tällä hetkellä OECD:llä on 32 jäsentä.
PGA – People’s Global Action Against ”Free” Trade and WTO, Ihmiset ”vapaa”kauppaa ja WTO:ta vastaan.
UNCTAD – United Nations Commission on Trade and Development. YK:n kauppa- ja kehityskomissio. YK:ta pidetään WTO:ta demokraattisempana
Unilateraalinen – yksipuolinen. Yksipuolisia ovat säädökset joita yksi päättää ja muut tottelevat – esimerkiksi USA:n EU:lle määräämät rangaistustullit EU:n banaanipolitiikan vuoksi.
Uusliberalismi. Likimääräinen nimitys Ronald Reaganin ja Margaret Thatcherin politiikan takana olevalle ideologialle, jonka pääideana on, että verotus ja kaupan rajoitukset hidastavat rikkaiden rikastumista. Uusliberalismin mukaan rikkaiden rikastuminen on kaikkien etu, koska ennen pitkää myös köyhät saavat osansa rikkaiden omaisuuden liikkuessa talousjärjestelmässä, raha kiertää eikä pysy paikallaan. Empiirinen todistusaineisto väitteelle on ristiriitaista – mediaanitulot, eli rikkaudeltaan keskimmäisen kansalaisen tulot uusliberalismia eniten soveltaneissa maissa (Englanti, Yhdysvallat) ovat pitkän alamäen jälkeen kääntyneet nousuun 90-luvun toisella puoliskolla, mutta heikoimmin toimeentuleva viidennes väestöstä on köyhtynyt yhä edelleen, mikä on jo 20 vuotta jatkunut kehityskulku.
WB – katso maailmanpankki.
WTO – World Trade Organization, Maailman kauppajärjestö. WTO:n päämäärä on maailman kaupan vapauttaminen.

The truth of altruistic development
(not sure why i am posting an assignment on here)
Deepening my understanding of neoliberal institutions like the IMF, WB, and WTO, along with the use of Keynesian economics have a profound impact on my view of global issues, specifically in regards to poverty, economic development, gender, and race. The deployment of these ideas changed the scope of international relations. The success of Keynesian economics in America during the New Deal era definitely contributed to our success as the world superpower after WWII. Due to his esteemed theories, and having surmountable proof of success, I find it peculiar that Keynes’ ideas about how the IMF should be run was not given more thought at the Bretton Woods Conference. If the IMF gave unconditional loans to countries experiencing debt- supporting domestic demand and maintaining employment, like Keynes proposed- how different would the world be? Would this foster independence, or only create more dependence? The idea of balance is crucial for this way of thinking, but ironically, Bretton Woods and the institutions that emerged from it have created more global stratification. Providing help based on conditionality has yet to prove itself as successful.
Something I found horrifying about this past week's content are the neo-Malthusian methods of population control being used on women in the global south. I have not learned about Thomas Malthus before this week, and the way his theories intertwine themselves in the policies implemented is disgusting. The widespread use of long acting birth control, like the Depo Provera shot (which has a bad reputation among women I know) and various implants deemed unsafe, only to make women of childbearing age more fruitful to the idea of smart economics is so corrupt. In a previous class, I learned that in some cases, women having access to discreet, long-acting birth control was beneficial. This information was in the context of abusive relationships, providing security against an unwanted pregnancy- which would only tether them to their husbands even more. So at first, reading this material was conflicting. But neoliberal institutions and corporations framing population control under the western-femenist guise of reproductive choice to increase the profitability and productivity of women is so disheartening. To make this worse, remembering that the World Bank historically values market based criteria over social policy makes the idea of justice seem far-fetched and idealistic. Is working against harmful policy from the inside of these institutions the only way to dismantle hegemony?
