Whether you are a seasoned PHP / MySQL developer, or a beginner, it really helps to have a local development environment. This allows you to test your code as you develop your web application before publishing it 'live' to the Internet.

Choose a remote MySQL connection method. You can use either of the following methods to access your MySQL databases remotely: SSH tunnel: This is the more secure method. You set up an SSH tunnel that forwards a port on your local computer to the remote MySQL server.

In this quickstart, you connect to an Azure Database for MySQL by using Node.js. You then use SQL statements to query, insert, update, and delete data in the database from Mac, Ubuntu Linux, and Windows platforms. This topic assumes that you're familiar with developing using Node.js, but you're new to working with Azure Database for MySQL.

The following power tip will guide you through setting up a PHP, Apache, and MySQL development environment on your local Windows system. We'll also take a look at the UEStudio features that can make your PHP / MySQL development easier.

Please keep in mind that PHP, Apache, and MySQL are software provided by third party entities. Therefore we (IDM) cannot provide technical support for the installation of these on your system.

Step 1. Download the installation files

In days past, you would have had to download Apache server, PHP, and MySQL all separately. However, there are now solutions which include these components bundled together and pre-configured to run 'out of the box' on a Windows system. We recommend using WampServer, which provides the basics for setting up your local Apache / PHP / MySQL environment on Windows.

If you do not wish to use an 'all-in-one' solution, you will need to download and install the Windows installers for each of the below components:

Apache, the web server software.

PHP, the general purpose scripting language that runs on Apache.

MySQL, the database server software that works hand-in-hand with PHP and Apache.

Step 2: Install everything and make sure it works

For the purposes of this power tip, we are assuming that you've chosen to install WampServer. To install it, simply double-click the setup file and follow the prompts.

You can confirm that everything has installed properly by pointing your browser to http://localhost/ while Wamp is running. If you see the WampServer 'welcome' page, you know everything is installed and running properly. You can also verify this by checking the Wamp icon in the system tray – if the icon is green, then everything is up and running.

Note: You may need to download and install the dependencies described in this community forum post in order for WampServer to run properly on your system.

Step 3: Set up MySQL

Since Wamp installs MySQL, all you need to do is set up a user and a database. Click the Wamp icon in the system tray, then go to MySQL » MySQL console. If the console prompts you for a password, just hit Enter.

Create a MySQL database

Now you need to create a new MySQL database. You can do this by issuing the following command in the console:

Make sure to include the semi-colon at the end of the command! The console should give a 'query ok' response.

You can verify that the databases have been created by using the 'Show databases' command. If you type, 'Show databases;' and hit enter, you should see something similar to:

For the purposes of this power tip, we will create a table called 'names' that includes the following fields: key, first, last. Create this table in our 'uestudio_test' database by using the following commands:

USE uestudio_test;

CREATE TABLE names (id INT NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, first VARCHAR(48), last VARCHAR(48), PRIMARY KEY(id));

We won't cover the syntax of these commands in the scope of this power tip.

You can see the structure of the table and confirm it was created correctly by typing:

Now, we need to insert some sample data into our table. For example, if we want to create an entry to insert the name 'John' (first) 'Smith' (last) into the table 'names', we would do so using the following command:

INSERT INTO names (first, last) VALUES ('John', 'Smith');

You can insert additional data by modifying the VALUES. Because you created the column id as an auto increment, you don't need to specify a value for this field.

To display all the data in the table, simply type:

Create a user

It's never a good idea to use the 'root' user in MySQL to interact with your databases. Create a new user and assign it to your database in the MySQL console by issuing the following command:

GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES on uestudio_test.* to 'SomeUser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'SomePassword';

Obviously you will want to modify the user name and password in the above to suit your preferences. You should see the console spit out:

Step 5. UEStudio and PHP/MySQL

PHP Support

UEStudio has built in PHP support which allows you to run scripts, check syntax, and more. To configure PHP support, click the Coding tab then open the PHP drop down. Click the last item here to set the location of the PHP executable.

Click the Browse button to browse to and select the folder containing the PHP executable, which in a default Wamp installation would be:

Of course this folder path may vary based upon what version of PHP you have installed and running.

After you've set the PHP executable's parent folder, you can use the PHP options in the Coding tab. Simply open a PHP file then click on any of the options from the PHP icon.

UEStudio offers additional options that make developing PHP scripts easier, but before we demonstrate those options we will create a sample PHP script that we can work with.

Learning to code PHP is not within the scope of this power tip, so we won't go into great detail about the script below. This script is simply provided as an example.

The script below will connect to the 'uestudio_test' database running on localhost. This is the database we created earlier. The script connects, then retrieves all the data from the 'names' table and output the results in an HTML table.

If you used different values for the variables, you would need to change them for the script to work according to your environment.

Create and save this script with any file name and a .php extension, like 'mysql_test.php,' in the www directory, which is the same location as the phpinfo.php script from above. If you click on Run script in the PHP drop down, you'll see the output of the script in the output window.

You can try the other commands available in the PHP drop down.

To see the contents of the script in the web browser, type http://localhost/mysql_test.php in your browser. You should see something similar to:

Create a Project

You don't have to create a project to develop using PHP/MySQL in UEStudio, but there are added benefits to creating a project. If the files you are editing are part of a project, then UEStudio's IntelliTips will parse the PHP script, which provides you a visual representation of classes, functions, etc. in the Classviewer, and provides some context-aware auto-complete when typing source code.

To create a project, click on New project in the Project tab. Name and save the project file. The 'Project settings' dialog will open, and you can add the 'mysql_test.php' to the project by clicking + Active file.

To view the parsed representation of the file, click on the Tags tab at the bottom of the Workspace manager. If the Workspace manager is not open, you can open it by checking Workspace manager in the Layout tab. Using the mysql_test.php file you created in this tutorial, you should see something similar to the below parsed representation:

By adding your source files to a project, you can also access IntelliTips functionality in the Project tab, like Find symbol definition, Display functions, etc.

For a single file like in this example, there really isn't much advantage for this. However, if you are using an object-oriented style of PHP programming, and your project includes many files, you would see something that looks more like:

As you can see, with a large project, this feature can be very helpful.

Link local to remote

If your local development environment is intended to 'mirror' your live site, you can link a local folder to a remote folder. This will allow you to sync or upload / download files between the local and remote folder in a single click. Learn more about linking local folders to remote folders.

The package is located inside a disk image (.dmg) file that you first need to mount by double-clicking its icon in the Finder. It should then mount the image and display its contents.

Before proceeding with the installation, be sure to stop all running MySQL server instances by using either the MySQL Manager Application (on macOS Server), the preference pane, or mysqladmin shutdown on the command line.

To install MySQL using the package installer:

Download the disk image (.dmg) file (the community version is available here) that contains the MySQL package installer. Double-click the file to mount the disk image and see its contents.

Double-click the MySQL installer package from the disk. It is named according to the version of MySQL you have downloaded. For example, for MySQL server 5.7.35 it might be named mysql-5.7.35-osx-10.13-x86_64.pkg.

The initial wizard introduction screen references the MySQL server version to install. Click to begin the installation.

The MySQL community edition shows a copy of the relevant GNU General Public License. Click and then to continue.

From the Installation Type page you can either click to execute the installation wizard using all defaults, click to alter which components to install (MySQL server, Preference Pane, Launchd Support -- all enabled by default).

Although the option is visible, the installation location cannot be changed.

Click to begin the installation process.

After a successful installation, the installer displays a window with your temporary root password. This cannot be recovered so you must save this password for the initial login to MySQL. For example:

MySQL expires this temporary root password after the initial login and requires you to create a new password.

MySQL server is now installed, but it is not loaded (or started) by default. Use either launchctl from the command line, or start MySQL by clicking 'Start' using the MySQL preference pane. For additional information, see Chapter 3, Installing a MySQL Launch Daemon, and Chapter 4, Installing and Using the MySQL Preference Pane. Use the MySQL Preference Pane or launchd to configure MySQL to automatically start at bootup.

When installing using the package installer, the files are installed into a directory within /usr/local matching the name of the installation version and platform. For example, the installer file mysql-5.7.35-osx10.13-x86_64.dmg installs MySQL into /usr/local/mysql-5.7.35-osx10.13-x86_64/ . The following table shows the layout of the installation directory.

How to Create an Organizational Intranet (or Extranet) with WordPress

An intranet is a “closed-circuit internet”. It is available only at a certain location or via certain protocols. Some companies may have a network for their business that is only available while in their building. Or perhaps a college has a campus-wide network for faculty, but outside of that campus, it is inaccessible.

The difference in an intranet and the internet is that you are hosting the intranet yourself. Instead of being a distributed web of servers talking to each other via remote protocols, your network is localized and hosted on local servers in your own physical space. It’s basically a tiny internet that lives in your IT department’s office.

An extranet is not all that different. Instead of being housed on a local server, accessible only to those connected to the same network, an extranet is housed in the cloud and accessible only to folks within a certain IP range (or another factor you set). Mostly, an extranet serves folks on distributed teams because they can’t access a physical location.

Companies use intranets and extranets to facilitate private and secure mass data sharing and collaboration. Such as company wide access to internal documentation, announcements, time off calendars, and more. In this article we’ll cover why WordPress is a good fit for your intranet or extranet and then show you how to create one.

Let’s get to it!

Why Use WordPress for an Intranet or Extranet?

Well, the first reason is that it’s free. Obviously, you will have to spring for the server and bandwidth to host the thing, but if you’re looking at setting up an intranet in the first place, you likely have that covered already.

You will probably be using your intranet for some of this stuff:

storing private documents

posting various announcements and memos

hosting training manuals,

providing updates to policies

securely locking away any files that really shouldn’t be posted anywhere the public has even blocked access

keeping an updated company directory

maintaining a company calendar

allowing access to internal collaboration tools

setting up various project management environments

running an internal, private social network

and doing mostly anything you could do on the public web

Lucky for you, WordPress has all of that functionality built into the core. And with just a little bit of work, you can use it to do the exact same thing that expensive intranet platforms charge a lot for.

Most other platforms charge per user. That makes having an intranet potentially out of reach for a number of small businesses and non-profits. With WP, you don’t have to worry about that. Outside of normal IT costs, you’re going to be able to really spare your tech budget a big hit this way.

Setting up a WordPress Intranet

The first thing you need is a network. That may sound obvious, but you won’t get anywhere if your on-site machines don’t talk to each other. And the hub of any network is the server. After all, the internet is just a series of servers that talk to each other and to our browsers, so an intranet is the same. Only those servers are on-site.

Step 1: Pick a Local Server Platform

First thing’s first: you’re going to need a pretty good computer. If you think you can run an intranet on a last-generation, beat-up machine, think again. This is going to be a workhorse computer that’s left on pretty much all the time (or at least while people need the intranet during work hours). So you’re going to want something moderately beefy.

Once you have that picked out, it’s time to make it the center of attention. To do that, we just need to install WordPress. Simple, right? Actually, yeah.

You will want to use MAMP / LAMP / WAMP. MAMP, LAMP, and WAMP let you turn your Mac, Linux, or Windows (hence the M, L, and W in the names). There’s also a version called XAMPP that works on all three; however, it is a bit more advanced than the others and not quite as stable.

Note that if you do go with XAMPP yourself, do not download any version marked with a VM. You will want the versions listed above those. You’re not setting up a virtual machine. Instead, you’re putting together the real thing.

For this particular example, however, I will be using MAMP. The process on each platform is similar, and you can find it documented more fully here.

Additionally, you might be considering a local environment such as Local by Flywheel, and while it can work, we don’t suggest it. Any member of the AMP stack is designed for workhorse-level strain, and Local is not. You may have no trouble with it as a core platform for your intranet, but that’s not what it’s designed to do, unlike the AMP stack. So we suggest going with one of those.

Download and run the software, and you will have a couple of new additions to your Applications folder. We aren’t concerned with MAMP Pro right now, so go into the MAMP folder and launch the program.

MAMP is really simple to use. Just press the Start Servers button to start the servers.

Congrats, you have an up-and-running local development server. But…you don’t have WordPress installed, and you haven’t given access to the people on your network. But you will!

Step 3: Installing WordPress on Your Local Intranet

The first thing you need to do at this point is download WordPress. You will be doing a manual install this time, rather than using a quick installer. Honestly, there’s not a lot of difference.

You will get a file that’s likely called WordPress-4.9.8.zip (or whatever the current version is). Unzip it. Now, you have a folder simply titled “wordpress” on your computer. If you open it, you will see a file and directory structure identical to that of hosted online installations.

Now you want to find the MAMP folder in Applications and navigate until you find one named htdocs. That’s where your new installation of WordPress is going to live. Just drag the unzipped folder into htdocs. In fact, that’s where all of your local web files will be stored.

At this point, you will create the database that WP runs on. So head to the MAMP window and press the Open Start Webpage button.

Your browser will open to the default MAMP help page, and you will see a toolbar of menu items. Navigate to Tools and find the link that says phpMyAdmin in the dropdown.

When the new page loads, you see the real heart of your WordPress installation. The vast majority of your data will live here. Click on the Databases tab, and name your new DB under the Create Database heading. We chose et_intranet. Hit Create when ready.

The next page is scary. Ignore it. You haven’t created database tables yet because you haven’t set up WordPress yet. It’s okay.

Now, you are ready to go and get WP up and running. Start MAMP up if you haven’t already by pressing the Start Servers button.

Then navigate to either http://localhost:8888/wordpress or http://bit.ly/2QH6W7B to access your new installation. Keep in mind, also, that you can rename the folder called wordpress whatever you want. You then use whatever the folder is named in the URL. So if you rename the wordpress folder to intranet, it would be https:localhost:8888/intranet.

Whatever you name it, you will choose a language for the installation, and then you will see this screen.

If you have used quick installers before, this was generally handled for you. However, since this is a manual installation, it’s up to you to name the database and get it up and running. It’s very easy to do, and you’re not going to mess anything up. When you’re ready to start, press the Let’s Go button to be taken here.

Change Database Name to whatever you used in phpMyAdmin earlier when you created the DB. Use root for both username and password.

Keep in mind, also, that under Table Prefix, you absolutely 100% must include the underscore afterward. So if you change it from wp_, you will need to make sure it’s intranet_ or whatever you choose. When you press the Submit button, you will give a few confirmations and set up your WP username before being taken to your shiny, new WP admin panel.

One that’s running on your local machine.

Now, it’s time to get it set up for your team. And your team only.

Step 5: Providing Network Access to Your Intranet

Since the term localhost is actually what it says, the local host, only your machine can use that term. But the computer running MAMP has an IP address that anyone on the same network can access. You can find it in two different ways.

The first is going into your network settings and checking under the Connected heading.

The second way is via the command line. You can use the Terminal utility to do this. Simply enter ifconfig |grep inet and hit enter. Yes, that’s the special character for the vertical bar. Thank you OSX Daily for teaching us that command. You will find your computers IP address where it says inet.

Now, you want to make sure you have the right ports open for your team, so go into the MAMP preferences and see what they’re set at. By default, it’s 8888, and that’s okay to use as long as there aren’t other applications on this local server running on those ports. If that’s the case, press the button to use ports 80 and 3306.

With those two numbers in hand, anyone connected to the same network can connect to your new WordPress installation as long as the MAMP server is running simply by going to the IP:Port/wordpress, or 10.0.0.152:8888/wordpress for example. The IP and Port will always be separated by a colon.

And if you would prefer to use a domain instead of an IP address (because they’re a bit easier to remember than strings of numbers), you can do that, too. Siteground has a great walkthrough of using the hosts file to set it all up.

Need (or Want) a WordPress Extranet Instead?

A WordPress extranet works just like the installation above except it’s available only to a select number of people on a select number of machines. Because of the way that the .htaccess file works, you can still whitelist entire networks, while blocking all other traffic. So even if you have a distributed team, you can still physically limit logins.

Simply open up your site’s .htaccess file.

Then insert the following code and save/upload the file again. Make sure to add your own IP address to the file.

Just add any other IP addresses or IP ranges on additional lines, and you’ve restricted access to your extranet just like it were a WordPress intranet.

How to Install WordPress on your Windows Computer Using WAMP

Do you want to install WordPress on your Windows computer locally? Working with WordPress on your computer allows you to test new WordPress features, learn how to develop with WordPress, and make websites before migrating them to the live server. In this article, we will show you how to properly install WordPress on Windows using WAMP.

Why You Should Install WordPress on Windows?

Installing WordPress locally on your computer gives you a testing environment that doesn’t affect your live website or blog. A WordPress install on your computer is also referred to as local server or localhost.

Normally WordPress developers use local WordPress install to develop their plugins and themes. Beginner users can also install WordPress on their computers to learn WordPress, test new WordPress theme and plugins, and experiment without affecting a live website.

Note: If you install WordPress locally on Windows, then the only person who can see that site is you. If you want to make a website that is available to the public, then you need to have a domain name and web hosting. We recommend that you follow this guide on how to start a WordPress blog.

That being said, let’s take a look at how to properly install WordPress on Windows using WAMP.

What is WAMP?

WAMP, is a compilation of Apache web server, PHP and MySQL bundled for Windows computers.

All of them are separate open source software. However, installing them separately is not quite easy even for experienced users. Software like WAMP allow you to easily install them and have a working local environment within minutes.

Step 1. Installing WAMP on Windows Computer

First, you need to download the WAMP software and install it on your computer. Simply go to the WampServer website and click on the ‘Start Using WampServer’ button.

It will take you to the downloads section. You’ll see two versions here: WampServer 32 bits and WampServer 64 bits. You need to select the WampServer version that matches the operating system type of your Windows computer.

To find out whether you are using 32 or 64-bit operating system, go to Control Panel » System and Security » System in your computer. There you will be able to see your operating system type.

Once downloaded, you can click on the wampserver execution file to run the installation. Make sure that you carefully follow the instructions on the installation screen.

During the installation process, you need to define the location for the web browser. By default, it will be Internet Explorer. You can change that to Google Chrome or any other web browser by locating it in the Program Files of your computer.

Once installed, you can launch the WampServer to continue.

Step 2. Setting Up a Database for Local WordPress Setup

Next thing you need to do is to create a blank MySQL database. On launching WAMP, you’ll see a green WampServer icon at the bottom right corner of your screen along with other icons. Simply click on it and then click on phpMyAdmin (a web based application to manage MySQL databases).

Note: If the WampServer icon is red or yellow, then it means the services (Apache, MySQL, PHP) are not running. You need to start the services by clicking on the icon before setting up the database.

It will take you to the phpMyAdmin login screen on your web browser. Simply enter the username: root and leave the password field blank. These are the default credentials to login into your localhost phpMyAdmin.

Click on the ‘Go’ button to continue.

Once logged in, you need to click on Databases in phpmMyAdmin to create a new database for WordPress. It will ask you to choose a name for your new database (we named ours test_db). After that click on the ‘Create’ button.

Your database is ready which means you can now install WordPress on localhost.

Step 3. Installing WordPress on Windows Using WAMP

The next thing you need to do is download the latest version of WordPress from the WordPress.org website. It will download as a zip file.

You need to extract the zip file and copy the ‘wordpress’ folder.

Now you need to navigate to the folder where you installed WAMP.

In this tutorial, we installed WAMP in C:\wamp64, so we’ll refer to that folder going forward. But keep in mind, it may be different for you depending on where you installed the program.

Paste the ‘wordpress’ folder into the C:\wamp64\www folder.

You can rename the ‘wordpress’ folder to anything you want, such as mysite, testsite, etc. This will be the URL of your local WordPress site, so be sure to choose something you’ll remember easily.

For the sake of this tutorial, we renamed the folder from wordpress to mysite.

Next, you can open the web browser and go to http://localhost/mysite/

First, it’ll ask you to select a language and then show you the database setup information. Once you have read it carefully, go ahead and click on the ‘Let’s go’ button to continue.

After that, you need to enter your database details like database name, username, password, host, and table prefix.

The database name will be the one that you entered in the previous step. In our case, we called it ‘test_db’. The username will be ‘root’, and you can leave the password field blank. You can also leave the database host and table prefix as-is.

Next, click on the ‘Submit’ button and WordPress will create a configuration file for you in the backend.

On the next screen, you will see a success message stating that WordPress is connected to your database, and you can proceed with the installation.

Go ahead and click on the ‘Run the installation’ button to continue.

It will take you to the welcome screen for WordPress. You need to add a title for your new WordPress website, choose an admin username, enter a strong password, and provide an admin email address.

Once you’re ready, click on the ‘Install WordPress’ button.

After the installation process is complete, you’ll see a success message. In the background, WordPress has created new tables in your database and it’s ready to use.

You can then proceed to your WordPress dashboard by clicking on the ‘Log In’ button.

Congratulations, you have successfully installed WordPress on a Windows computer using WAMP.

Step 4. Enabling Pretty Permalinks in WAMP

The new version of WordPress doesn’t break your local site on changing the permalinks setting.

However if you still see the ‘page not found’ error on your pages after changing the permalinks from Settings » Permalinks in WordPress, then simply follow our guide on how to enable custom permalinks in WAMP.

Step 5. Troubleshooting WAMP Issues

WAMP is quite easy to use even for beginners. However, if you are unable to get it running, then the following troubleshooting tips would help.

Fixing the WAMP Skype Conflict

If you have Skype installed and running, then WampServer may not be able to work properly due to a conflict with Skype. The conflict is caused by both Apache and Skype using the same port 80. There is a simple fix for this problem.

Open Skype and go to Tools » Options. This will bring up a dialog box, from here you need to click on Advanced and then Connections.

Uncheck the box that says Use port 80 and 443 as alternatives for incoming connections. Save options and restart Skype.

Install Visual C++ Redistributable

WAMP needs Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 to run. If you don’t have it installed on your computer, then you can download and install it from the Microsoft website.

Bonus: Migrating from WAMP to Live
