look at my boy!! gideon "walsh" walsh (he/they) by the unparalleled @crownedinmarigolds ~
they're from my friend's original game, Chrono-Rogue, set in a future where time travel imperialism has mutated space-time beyond repair. walsh is a former codex inscriptionist; sort of an archivist-historian-scribe tasked with documenting the details of original timelines and all of their subsequent variations (the codex bracer on his wrist still allows him access to the mass inscriptionist information network). now they're a time pirate just trying to keep their friends from being ritualistically sacrificed to space demons <3

A Year Without (4/?)
Tumblr media
Summary: After the curse returns Killian to the Enchanted Forest, he struggles to acclimate to his old life and his old ways. When a bird with a letter and memory potion arrives on his ship, he accepts the challenge to find Emma and help her save her family. Getting to Emma won't be easy and will cost him dearly, but what choice does he have when he cannot go a day without memories of her haunting him?

New York Three Months
Emma thought the move from Boston to New York may be difficult for Henry, but he was settling in so well that she could hardly remember a time they were not in the city. Bonds and bounties were still proving to be a steady income and she had finally found a decent place to finish furnishing their new apartment without eating into their vacation fund.
Emma sat at her normal table in the little coffee shop she’d found in the first week they’d moved. Despite the bitter coffee, Emma found herself drawn to the black ink drawings accented with bold red showing scenes from the original tellings of fairytales popularised by Disney’s less grim tellings.
She was looking at the deep, blood-red apple held out to the beautiful young princess, sipping at her hot coffee, when someone stepped in between her and the canvas. “Emma! I am so glad, I’ve run into you,” a male voice interrupted her musings. Emma took in his mop of brown hair, grey sports coat, thick eyebrows and broad, easy smile. Obviously, he wasn’t someone she knew from work with such an open smile directed at her.
Her confusion must have been clear on her face, because he continued quickly, “Walsh. From Wizard of Oak.”“Ah, yes. Walsh. Sorry, I was just…” she wasn’t sure what she was just, but he didn’t give her a chance to finish before continuing. “I was going to call you, today. Your end table is ready,” he was still smiling so brightly.
“Oh, that’s great,” Emma tried for a smile, but they never seemed to reach her eyes these days. She blamed it on the recent move and did not dare to investigate the unsettled feeling with any more effort. It always came back to the same pain and the same trauma, so she let it alone and mostly it didn’t bother her. But, some days, it seemed to weigh heavily on the corners of her smiles.
“If you have time now, I would love for you to see it before we wrap it up for delivery. It would be easier for me to make any changes prior to it leaving the shop.” Walsh continued, still with that easy smile.
“Oh,” Emma could not seem to grasp an excuse and would like to make sure she liked the custom piece before it arrived in her apartment. It would be such a hassle to have to send it back to the shop and her afternoon was open, “Um, okay.”
He chatted and she hummed responses as they walked the short distance to his shop. She laughed at a few of his jokes, which seemed to please him significantly. The walk with his easy company had her smiling genuinely as they walked toward the back of his store.
Her end table was sitting on the clean workbench, exactly as she’d specified. “Is everything to your liking?”
“Um, yeah. It’s very nice. Thank you, Walsh.”
He beamed when she said his name. “Perfect. Well then, I will wrap it up and have it to you by this evening.”
They chatted a bit longer about the trade tricks he’d used to make the legs curve so naturally, he pointed out some fancy technique he’d used to hide the joining of the two different types of woods, and other things that were probably impressive to someone who knew what he was talking about, so Emma just nodded along.
She knew Henry would put hot chocolate on it without a coaster before the end of the month, marring the surface and welcoming it into their lives properly, scarred but perfectly functional. It was just an end table.
Yet, she was entertained by Walsh’s seemingly boundless excitement and passion for his work. He was easy to be around, his presence light and airy. She had more coffee in this cup anyway and nowhere better to be until Henry was off school.
After she finished her coffee and they’d started chatting more about the area and what things she just had to try to be a real New Yorker, she made her excuses to leave. Walsh’s eagerness for her attention was impossible for her to miss. So, she wasn’t surprised when he asked her out on a date.
She was surprised by her own words, “I’m usually free for lunch.”
New York Five Months
“This cannot be your favourite Classic Disney movie!” Walsh groaned playfully.
“I can fly! I can fly! I can fly!” Henry and Emma sang at him in unison.
“I have always liked all the sword fighting. And, Mum has a soft spot for the villain,” Henry offered by way of explanation.
“No, I just don’t see how he is even the villain.” Walsh gave her a questioning look, so she continued, “Peter Pan literally stole these children from their beds. If he were to ever try to snatch you away from me, I’d take more than his shadow from him, kid.” She paused, shovelling popcorn coated in melted milk duds in her mouth.
“I know,” Henry smiled, but rolled his eyes at her.
“And, I just think that Captain Hook could prove useful to my rescue mission - he knows the island and the little prick’s hideouts. At the very least, his ship would be required,” she continued.
“Because you always need an escape route,” Henry finished, having heard the advice several times before.
“So, you’ve thought this out a bit?” Walsh laughed, pulling her into his side for a hug and kissing the top of her head.
“Just a bit. Henry has always taken stories so seriously - we have strong opinions on all the classics.”
“You should have been here for the debate about the beast,” Henry added.
“Yeah, we still aren’t sure if we think he is a hero or not. But, we agreed that Belle is pretty great.” Emma said, leaning into Walsh’s embrace. She could feel more than hear Walsh’s low laugh at their story and for the first moment in a long while, she felt something like contentment.

[No out of a mold with this one. No. No molds. Chaos was Steve’s strategy, said Walsh. They just take about 5 minutes to cook. Look at the size of these monsters.]

for del: "You own a cat now? Tell me about the cat and show me a picture of it."
For Ptolemy: "You've seen actual ghosts? Are they scary or cool or both?"
For Ayoni (disclaimer i dont. remember anything about ayoni.): "What's the most important trait in a friend?"
DEL: name's hex. i'd kill for her. she's crazy about bells and chimes, anything that jingles. neville's got some bells hanging from the door handle upstairs in the shop, so she's decided she works here too. get her stoned enough on catnip and she chases her own tail, then acts surprised when she catches it. weirdest yowl/rumble/hoarse whisper of a meow you ever heard.
Tumblr media
PTOL: I'd say "fascinating" moreso than cool or scary. A lot of them are harmless; just lost, or lonely, or confused. On the whole they're much more deserving of respect and kindness than fear. I think it's cool that they exist and I enjoy speaking with them, but it's not a state of existence that I envy. Then once you get into the realm of things that are ghostlike but not ghosts--poltergeists, spirits, other non-corporeal entities of that nature--that's when it gets scary. That's the shit I do not care for one bit, keep it, no thanks.
AYONI: sincerity, I think, is the most important trait in a friend. I've not had friends before until very recently, but I'm learning that people don't always show you their true selves; and that it's quite special to look at someone and trust that they really are who they present themself to be.

Don Walsh: The man who made the deepest ever dive
Image source, Take legal action against Flood By Rebecca Morelle Science Editor, BBC News Ocean explorer Captain Don Walsh has actually passed away at the age of 92. More than 60 years ago he made the very first descent to the inmost location in the ocean, the Mariana Trench which lies nearly 11km (7 miles) down. I was fortunate sufficient to count him as a buddy. This is the story of an…
