Vuzix will sell Blade AR glasses in November, retail bundle in 2019
Having originally planned to sell its lightweight Blade AR smart glasses in 2017, VR/AR headset maker Vuzix has announced separate 2018 and 2019 ship dates for two versions of the product. The initial commercial version — called Blade Edge — will begin shipping in the first week of November, followed by a January 2019 release of Blade General with retail packaging and accessories.

Vuzix has been making smart glasses for well over a decade, primarily for enterprise use such as medical applications or stocking shelves in warehouses. Last year, Vuzix teased a prototype of the Blade, a smaller, slimmer pair made for consumers. Not only does it come with a floating display a la Google Glass, it's also compatible with Alexa (and, eventually, Google Assistant). Now the company says it's ready to ship the Blade for $1,000 as it attempts to pick up where Google Glass left off.

Vuzix reveals Blade AR smart sunglasses with Alexa capabilities
Vuzix has come up with some pretty interesting smart glasses in the past, but this does not mean that they should rest on their laurels. In fact, Vuzix has figured out that the next big step in the world of smart glasses would be the incorporation of Amazon Alexa capabilities. Taking advantage of Vuzix’s intellectual property patent portfolio and leadership position when it concerns the area of…

2019-01-03 Daybook
2019-01-03 -- Actually, officially, back to work.
Need to finish vol 3 of the Work Technologies report for Gigaom in the next few days.
Launched sponsor memberships on Work Futures yesterday. Led to some issues, since I discovered I can only post one newsletter issue per day on Revue even though I have two classes of subscribers now.
I tried to troubleshoot, but no response from Revue: I bet they are still vacationing.
No big deal: I have reverted to Substack, which has better social functionality, anyway, and fewer headaches in formatting. I have ported over all existing subscribers.
Work Futures
Modus Cooperandi | adding to my list of organizational 'design' companies to interview, like Nobl, August, The Ready, Corporate Rebels, Postshift, and so on.
Cute name. I think I will appropriate cooperandi as a term to refer to those in the movement pushing for a revolution in organizational theory and practice. #wfd
Forbes is building more AI tools for its reporters | Max Willens reports on new featres from Forbes Bertie CMS tech that writes first drafts of articles for writers.
Bad Decisions Make Good Stories | The Corporate Rebels have good primer on models of decision making. I will weigh in with a response -- drawing deeply from cognitive behavioral science, specifically the work of Daniel Kahneman and his colleagues. In particular, I'm not a fan of the advice process, because structuring decisions around someone researching and developing a proposed solution cuts short the period of unresolved and open-ended discussion of alternatives. Everything is skewed by the pitch process.

What Everyone Needs to Understand About Millennial Bosses | Only 38% of Millennial bosses say they want to learn from boomers. Oh, great. But they are right about a lot of things: 42% view business as a whole as conservative, and 55% prefer small-group conversations over other forms of communication.

How big should your house be? | Kate Wagner says The entertaining rooms meant to make us social actually foster isolation:
For a recent study, UCLA-affiliated researchers in fields ranging from anthropology to sociology used cameras to record in great detail how 32 dual-income families living in the Los Angeles area used their homes. Their findings link real data to something about which I have been yelling into the void for years: Nobody is actually using their formal living and dining rooms. Families actually spend most of their time in the kitchen and the informal living room or den.
Yet we continue to build these wastes of space because many Americans still want that extra square footage, and for a long time, that want has been miscategorized as a need.
Must read for futureheads. Prediction: people will stop building formal living rooms into new homes, and make bigger kitchens and airbnb apartments, instead.
