Navratri: A Celebration of Faith and Devotion
As the festive vibes start rolling in with the advent of autumn, the Hindu calendar becomes rich with multiple festivities, and Navratri is undoubtedly one of the most significant among these. Navratri, literally meaning 'nine nights', is not just another celebration in the cycle of Indian festivals; instead, it carries a deep spiritual essence and represents a heartfelt expression of faith and devotion.
Primarily, Navratri is an elaborate spectacle of devotion dedicated to the goddess Durga and her various forms. It is celebrated twice a year - once at the onset of the summer season, known as Chaitra Navratri, and then at the beginning of the autumn season, known as Sharad Navratri. However, it’s the latter that most individuals think of when the word 'Navratri' is mentioned.
Commenced with the new moon, each night of Navratri symbolically represents a stage of the spiritual journey undertaken by a devotee. It is a journey of self-discovery, an opportunity to connect with the divine, and a time to immerse oneself in prayers and rituals. These nine nights stand for the nine forms of goddess Durga, each embodying a distinct power and energy, signifying the victory of positivity over negativity.
An essential part of Navratri is the artistic expression of devotion through "garba" and "dandiya-ras". Everywhere you look, there are swirls of vibrant dresses and sounds of rhythmic clacks from dandiya sticks – a sight of inclusive community joy. Evolving from traditional religious practices, these dances have become a cultural phenomenon, transcending geographical and cultural barriers and uniting individuals from all walks of life.
Navratri also tells the tale of human fortitude and spiritual discipline through the practice of fasting. Fasting, during this period, serves as a means of physical detoxification, mental focus, and spiritual uplifting. It's not just about renouncing food; it's about adopting a simplified, satvic lifestyle that helps channelize one's energy towards the divine. The breaking of the fast involves sharing meals amongst family and friends including dishes like sabudana khichdi, aloo vrat ki kadhi, kuttu ka dosa, etc.
What makes Navratri such a captivating celebration is its sheer diversity. From the eastern belt of Bengal, where it is celebrated as Durga Puja with vivacious pandals and intricate idol making; to the north, where the last day known as Dussehra reenacts the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana; and to the western states of Gujarat and Maharashtra, which becomes a riot of color and dance - Navratri manifests in a myriad of ways but with one common thread - reverence for the Goddess.
In essence, Navratri is more than just a religious event on a calendar. It is a profound journey of faith, a veritable celebration of devotion, and a manifestation of collective jubilation. The festival serves as a reminder of the inherent good within all of us and reaffirms our collective faith in the power of good over evil, light over darkness, and truth over falsehood. Navratri, therefore, is not just a festival; it is a transformative celebration of faith and devotion that possesses the power to uplift and unite everyone it touches.

Vrat Ki Kadhi an easy and simple yogurt based curry made for the fasting period.
Kadhi is a yogurt based curry made with yogurt with besan(chickpea flour added to it). It is tempered with spices likes fenugreek seeds cumin seeds , chilli powder and herbs like curry leaves and coriander leaves.
Vrat Ki Kadhi is made with the flour that Singhara Atta(Chestnut Flour), Rajgira Atta(Amaranth Flour). The curry can be tempered with the spices as per one’s dietary preference during fasting period. I usually like to keep it simple with curry leaves and green chillies and ginger. I like to have Vrat Ki kadhi with Plain Sama Rice or Sama Rice Pulao. Both are no fuss dishes and can be prepared in jiffy. During fasting when you need to go to work, you can make these quickly and pack for lunch. Since there are no spices used in these recipes these come under Satvik food and are light on stomach. Many times I also love to have it like soup, it is so warm and comforting with the flavor from curry leaves and ginger.
What I need to make Vrat Ki Kadhi
Plain Yogurt, Chestnut Flour(Singhara Atta) or Amaranth Flour(Rajgira Atta), Curry leaves and green chillies.Let’s see the easy and simple recipe.
Vrat Ki Kadhi
Vrat Ki Kadhi, a yogurt based curry that can be consumed during fasting days like Shivaratri, Navratri. A gluten-free yogurt based curry with simple and easy recipes.
1 Cup Yogurt/Curd
1 Tbsp Rajgira Atta(Amaranth flour)/Singhara Atta(Chestnut flour)
3-4 Curry Leaves
1-2 Green Chilies
1 tbsp Desi Ghee
Sendha Namak/ Himalayan Salt
2-3 tbsp Crushed and roasted peanuts (optional)
In a bowl, add Kadhi, flour and mix well.
In a pan add desi ghee, when the is hot enough, add curry leaves, crushed and green chillies.
Add yogurt mix, add a cup of water and ix well. Aad salt as per taste. Cook it till it boils and starts to thicken.
Once it comes to desired consistency, take off the flame and enjoy with Vrat ka pulao or vrat ke paranthe.
You can make this gluten-free Kadhi while not fasting also.In tempering, add a 1/4 tsp of fenugreek seeds, cumin seeds.
Add crushed ginger and garlic, along with green chillies and curry leaves. Add yogurt and flour mix, add water and cook it till thickens to desired consistency.
Add table salt instead of sendha namak.
You can keep the consistency of this Kadhi as per your preference. To make it thick add less water and add a tbsp more of flour(Singhara/ Rajgira flour). These flours are gluten-free and so this kadhi can be consumed by those on gluten-free diets. When not fasting you can temper it with, fenugreek seeds, cumin seeds and fresh garlic. Please see notes in the recipe card.

Top 3 Navratri Vrat (Fasting) Recipes for 2022
It is that time of the year again when Goddess Durga is worshipped with decorative items, jeweled clothing, kumkum, and a delicious spread of food. This festival is popularly known as the Tomorrowland of Gujaratis; however, the Hindu festival of Navratri is celebrated throughout the country at a magnificent scale by worshipping the nine incarnations of Goddess Durga.
People often observe fast (vrat) on all the days of Navratri. We have collated some not-so-common recipes that you can try in this Navratri in place of your usual fasting dishes.
Banana Walnut Lassi
A great recipe where you will not have to compromise on your cravings. And also, it barely takes 10 mins to make it!
Ingredients: 1 cup yogurt, a couple of bananas, walnuts, 1 tsp mixture of flax seeds and sesame seeds, and 2 tbsp honey.
Method:
In a food processor, blend yogurt, bananas, walnuts, seeds, and honey;
Blend it till the mixture is creamy and smooth;
Transfer it to a glass. You can garnish it with chopped walnuts and serve.
Alu Ki Kadhi
This is one of the perfect dishes to make for lunch while observing Vrat. This is a very easy yet filling recipe made with our very own oh-so-versatile potatoes.
Ingredients: 1kg potatoes that are boiled, peeled, and mashed smoothly, 2 tsp rock salt, ¼ tsp chili powder, ½ cup singhara flour, ½ cup curd, a few curry leaves, ½ tsp cumin seeds, 2 red chilies, 1 tbsp chopped ginger paste, ½ tbsp coriander powder, and 3-4 cups of water.
Method:
Make a thick batter out of potatoes, flour, and chili powder. Separate ¼th of the batter and set it aside.
Heat some oil in a wok. From the batter set aside, make pakoras by dropping in spoonful of batter in the oil so that they look like small balls. Fry till they are golden brown and set them aside.
Turn the ¾th batter into smooth paste by adding curd and water.
In a pan, heat 2 tbsp oil and add curry leaves, and cumin seeds. Once the cumin seeds are done crackling, add the whole red chilies and ginger paste.
Add the curd paste from point c, salt, and coriander powder and bring it to a boil. Remember to keep stirring over low flame till the paste thickens slightly.
Now add the pakoras made in step b above. Let them simmer for a couple of minutes.
Garnish with coriander leaves and serve it hot.
Makhana Kheer
This is a traditional Indian pudding that is really creamy and flavorful, one that you may desire to make even on normal non-festive days!
Ingredients: 1 cup makhana, 3 cups milk, 2 tbsp ghee, a few saffron strands, ¼ cup sugar, and 1 tsp cardamom powder.
Method:
In a heavy bottom saucepan, pour in the milk and heat it on a medium flame for ~7 to 8 minutes while stirring occasionally to avoid milk getting stuck to the bottom of the saucepan.
Heat some ghee in a separate frypan on another stove and fry the makhanas till they are light brown and crispy. Transfer to a bowl and set it aside.
Once the milk is thickened, add saffron, sugar, and the makhanas. Simmer the mixture for another 5 to 7 minutes till all the sugar has melted.
Sprinkle the cardamom powder and stir it. You can now turn off the gas.
Garnish with some roasted cashews and serve hot.
Festivals like Navratri offer an opportunity to cleanse your body. Fasting is an art and if not done correctly, can make you irritable. But worry not, these delicious recipes will keep your cravings at bay and also help you follow the traditions with happy feelings!
Apart from the colorful clothes, prayers and dancing, we hope you embrace joy and festivities with these delectable yet cleansing recipes! Do let us know which ones you liked the best and how they turned out in the comment section below.
