Dunque,…

2021 Nissan Qashqai Midnight Edition
Box-office popularity and critical acclaim don’t always align. Sometimes the biggest cinematic hits fall foul of the critics, leaving hearts of the masses and bums on seats to outweigh the minds of a learned few. Ticket sales reign supreme and it’s deemed a success.
The Nissan Qashqai has, for the most part, lived up to this scenario since its inception (previously branded Dualis Down Under). While it doesn’t top the VFACTS sales charts and it’s unlikely to win a group comparison test, the Qashqai is a consistent seller. Tied to a strong brand, the Qashqai offers families big value from their small SUV.
However, it’s been around a while – since 2014, in fact. So, to keep interest high and customers walking back into post-Covid showrooms, Nissan has delved into the gloss-black-paint reserves to create the Midnight Edition.
What does it cost to own?
The Qashqai is covered by a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty, which is pretty standard within the industry these days. Servicing is every 12 months or 10,000km (whichever comes first), but you can also opt for a capped-price servicing plan that runs for 12 years/120,000km. Five years of roadside assistance is available.
What’s the exterior like?
In PR-speak, “Nissan invites you to own the night”… what that translates to is a heap of black accents being added to the known styling. And to be fair, it does the trick, with the Midnight Edition offering meaningful flair to keep the Qashqai ageing gracefully. For a known design, the special edition adds an on-road presence.
This is created via a Gloss Black V-motion grille, while the front and rear bumper blades and roof rails gain the same treatment. Darkened LED head (adaptive) and taillights feature, too, as well as body-coloured mouldings. The auto-folding wing mirrors gain gloss black, as do the 19-inch alloy wheels.
There are five exterior colours to choose from and include Vivid Blue, Ivory Pearl, Gun Metallic, Magnetic Red and Pearl Black.
What’s the interior like?
Yes, you guessed it, the black theme continues inside, too. And in a mind-bending juxtaposition, brightens up the tried and tested Qashqai design in line with the exterior. Both gloss and brushed black accents abound, including a black roof headliner, as well as part leather/Alcantara seats and illuminated kick plates.
The benefit of the larger dimensions against the class norm (the Qashqai is 4394mm long, 1086mm wide, 1595mm tall and with a 2646mm wheelbase) is a spacious cabin. All five occupants enjoy generous head, leg and toe room front to back, with the back pews gaining a central armrest with cup holders when four-up.
Despite its almost range-topping status, the Midnight Edition misses out on heated front seats and power adjustment (even for the driver), as well as digital dual-zone climate control. Yet, overall, the styling tweaks give the ergonomically sound cabin a bit of a second wind. The new steering wheel is also a highlight, feeling nice in hand.
What’s the infotainment like?
Updated for the current-gen model, the Qashqai gains a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen to handle the infotainment. It’s on the small side, meaning you have to be precise with your inputs and the graphics are dated. Still, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is DAB+ digital radio, which plays through a six-speaker audio system. The instrument cluster gains a 4.2-inch screen for features like the digital speedo.
Something left wanting, and a sign of the Qashqai’s 2014 ilk, is a lack of USB and USB-C ports. There are none in the back, and just a single port is hidden in the centre storage bin. And there’s no wireless charging, either. The upcoming third generation can’t arrive soon enough.
What is the storage like?
Given its ‘small’ SUV category designation, the Qashqai offers space some of the competition can’t match. The boot is 430 litres, extending to 1598 litres with the 60/40-split rear seats folded. There is a bit of a step up from the boot floor when the rear seats are stowed, however, the load bay is flat and the lip isn’t too intrusive when heaving in weighty/bulky items.
The centre console is endowed with a cavernous storage compartment and further bolstered by numerous provisions for cups, bottles, keys, wallets and sunglasses. Basically, there are a plethora of places to put a family’s worth of items.
What engines are available?
You can have any engine you want, as long as it’s a naturally aspirated four-cylinder. Its relatively large capacity does its best to mask a lack of torque compared to smaller, turbocharged units, with the 2.0-litre unit producing 200Nm. Combined with 106kW of power, the Midnight Edition offers ‘enough’ grunt to cope with the 1392kg kerb weight and fulfil its intended use… just.
Within city limits, the Qashqai operates amicably and the CVT is one of the better units on the market. Where it becomes strained is open-road overtaking, especially given power and torque are developed high in the rev range (6000 and 4400rpm respectively). The 2.0-litre four-pot sounds strained, too, as the CVT perches the tacho needle high in the rev range.
What about the fuel economy?
Officially the Qashqai Midnight Edition is rated at 6.9L/100km on a combined cycle. However, throughout testing the trip computer returned eights, even when pushing the oddly placed Eco mode button for frugal driving. It’s a shame some of the Nissan/Renault alliance turbo petrol and diesel engines offered in other markets aren’t available here.
What’s it like to drive?
All the controls are light, progressive and easy to use for the daily grind and family hauling. Driven within these parameters the Midnight Edition ticks boxes by being easy to live with. The brakes are strong and progressive, the steering is light for city car parks and the stepped-ratio CVT mimics a conventional torque-converter automatic with six ratios for a ‘manual mode’. The suspension tune leans towards the stiff side. However, the dampers offer enough control on the rebound to prevent pogoing. Still, overall, it’s a bit too firm to be branded cosseting.
A somewhat interesting move is the fitment of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres (225/45 front to rear) to the test car. It’s a lot of rubber for a humble SUV, especially given its usual performance-based applications. And while the sticky hoops offer the safety of heightened grip levels, it’s almost too much as the body struggles to match their competence, exacerbating the Qashqai’s roll. There’s also noticeable kickback and rack rattle through the steering wheel on poor surfaces.
How safe is the Qashqai?
The Qashqai range receives a five-star ANCAP safety rating, but it’s worth keeping in mind the score is carried over from the 2017 model year. Nissan Intelligent mobility active-safety includes blind-spot warning, lane-departure warning, emergency braking (AEB), rear cross-traffic alert 360-degree surround-view camera with parking sensors and intelligent driver alert. ISOFIX is fitted to the two outboard rear seats.
Sadly, given the price point, active cruise control, pedestrian/cyclist detection and lane-keeping with steering intervention aren’t standard, you have to step up to the Ti for that.
What are the alternatives?
Many. So many, in fact, it’s hard to list them all, so here are some of the key combatants. The never-say-die Mitsubishi ASX which, despite its age, keeps brewing a sales storm. In terms of racking up sales accolades, it’s the Lewis Hamilton of the small SUV segment. Like the Qashqai, it offers a lot of physical car for the monetary outlay.
Others to consider are the not-so-small Kia Seltos, dynamically talented Toyota C-HR, pragmatic Honda HR-V and the ‘funky’ Hyundai Kona. The Skoda Kamiq and Volkswagen T-Roc offer Euro quality, while the Mazda CX-30 pairs dynamics with a premium cabin. The choice is seemingly endless in this burgeoning class.
The bottom line
The Qashqai is a classic case of ‘the more you spend, the less sense it makes. While the Midnight Edition jazzes things up a bit, there really isn’t much point extending into this price bracket. The metal-for-money equation that Nissan’s SUV does so well is no longer in its favour. At $28,290 (manual) and $30,290 (auto), the entry-level ST is about all the Qashqai you’ll ever need. The superior space and easy-to-live-with nature make it appealing to the masses.
So, while the Midnight Edition conjures visual delight and, somewhat out of character, offers grippy performance-orientated rubber, it isn’t the variant to buy. It’s also worth keeping in mind that a new Qashqai is, we’re told, around the corner.

Škoda k tomu používá i umělce
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Příspěvek Škoda už chystá facelift modelu Karoq. Velké změny ale nečekejte pochází z auto-mania.cz

2022 Hyundai Kona N spy shots
A hot version of the Kona subcompact SUV is coming, as evidenced by a camouflaged prototype at the Nürburgring sporting some performance upgrades.
Hyundai N boss Albert Biermann in early 2018 revealed he had already tasked his engineers with starting work on a potential Kona N in order to persuade senior management to give the vehicle the green light for production. Guess they were convinced.
The Kona N prototypes feature a dual-tip exhaust system, upgraded brakes with red calipers, new openings in the front fascia, and a rear wing above the hatch. A radar sensor can be seen in the lower grille for the automatic emergency braking system.
The Kona N is expected to benefit from the same powertrain and chassis upgrades that existing Hyundai N models like the Veloster N and i30 N have received. At the top of the list would be the tuner’s 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4, which at present offers outputs ranging from 246 to 275 horsepower. A 6-speed manual is likely standard while an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic from the 2020 Veloster N should be on the options list.
The standard Kona is offered with a 2.0-liter inline-4 delivering147 hp, or an electric motor delivering 201 hp.
Look for the Kona N to debut in 2021, and if approved for the United States we should see it arrive as a 2022 model. Given the current popularity of SUVs, a Kona N seems like a no-brainer, especially with Volkswagen having developed the 296-hp T-Roc R.

Skoda is preparing a rival crossover Hyundai Creta
At the end of the summer, we reported that Skoda will develop a simple and low-cost cars for emerging markets. A launching pad for the project will be India, where these machines will begin to produce in 2020. Autocar India revealed the details of this plan: the first model in the new “budget” range will be a compact crossover that will compete with the popular SUV Hyundai Creta.
In the range of the Volkswagen group already has a car of this class: Volkswagen T-Roc and Seat Arona. Soon in Europe should appear similar to Skoda, but the car for India will be different. Cheap Skoda are developing on a simplified platform MQB-A0 (new Volkswagen Polo, Skoda Fabia), which, apparently, many elements unify honored with the “truck” of the older generation of PQ25. In addition, the Assembly of the Indian cars will have a large share of local components, and this means giving up many advanced solutions. The main engine should be derated diesel 2.0 TDI of the EA288 family.
The second cheapest model will be the compact sedan, which will be released in 2021, and a year later, Skoda will release a similar hatchback. While these plans relate only to the Indian market, but the company does not exclude local export cars to other countries.

The Frankfurt motor show is, by far, the largest motor show in Europe and held every two years. Geneva might be the darling of the supercar manufacturers, but Frankfurt is a tour de force for the big German car companies and other major brands.
This year, the overwhelming theme for almost everybody was electrification. Almost every concept car and new production model featured either a hybrid or fully-electric drivetrain of some sort. With numerous governments planning to ban purely petrol and diesel cars in coming decades (the UK expiry date for non-electrified new cars is 2040), the car manufacturers were rolling out their latest ideas for electric vehicles.
Three-pointed star of the show
There was no doubt about the leading attraction at Frankfurt this year. Mercedes-Benz finally took the wraps off its long-awaited Mercedes-AMG Project ONE supercar. As close as you can possibly get to a Formula One car for the street, this 1,000hp monster is powered by a hybrid powertrain developed from Lewis Hamilton’s championship-winning F1 car.
Bentley’s next big leap
We’d already seen the photos, but Frankfurt marked the public debut for the all-new Bentley Continental GT, powered by a substantially reworked 6.0-litre W12 petrol engine. The original model revolutionised Bentley when it was launched in 2003, and was updated in 2010. Now the third-generation model promises to lead Bentley into the next decade, with a plug-in hybrid and possibly even a fully-electric model to follow.
Ferrari redefines the “entry-level” model
Replacing the successful California model, which has marked the gateway to the Ferrari range for the last decade, is the new Ferrari Portofino. With 600hp on tap and a handy 70kg weight reduction, however, its performance is anything but pedestrian. Styling is also smoothed out compared to the rather fussy California, especially with the folding hard-top roof in place.
Audi finally builds a rear-wheel drive car
For decades, Audi has championed the safety benefits of all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive over the driving dynamics of rear-wheel drive. When the brand took control of Lamborghini nearly 20 years ago, the first thing it changed was to add all-wheel drive to the Italian supercars to make them safer and easier to drive.
So it was to everyone’s great surprise that Audi whipped the covers off a special version of its R8 supercar called the RWS, which stands for Rear Wheel Series (as usual, Audi is great at catchy names). Only 999 are planned to be built, and they are likely to sell out quickly.
Next page: Living in electric dreams Nearly every car company at Frankfurt was keen to talk about electric power. Given the spectacular nose-dive of diesel sales in the UK, and governments everywhere looking to ban diesel cars from entering major cities, electric power appears to have reached a tipping point. Suddenly the UK government’s plan to ban non-electrified new cars from 2040 seems very conservative.
Whether a familiar hybrid setup, a plug-in model with more electricity and less fossil fuel, or a fully-electric motor powered by a battery or hydrogen fuel cell, there was electricity everywhere in Frankfurt as manufacturers showed off their plans for augmenting or replacing the internal combustion engine.
BMW’s i division steps up
BMW showed off a concept for an electric sports saloon called the i Vision Dynamics, which previews an upcoming i5 saloon to join the company’s i3 and i8 all-electric models. Longer, lower and wider than a regular 3 Series saloon, the i5 is set to reach roads by 2021.
Also on the BMW stage was the Concept X7 iPerformance, previewing a large luxury SUV to take on Range Rover. Powered by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, as well as regular petrol and diesel models, the production BMW X7 is set to arrive late next year.
Finally, Frankfurt marked the public premiere of the already-announced upgrades to the successful BMW i3 city car, including a high-performance i3s model.

Volkswagen wants you to forget dieselgate
Frankfurt 2017 marked Volkswagen’s most determined effort yet to set out its plans for an electric future and try to make people forget about the diesel scandal that continues to dog the company (and the rest of the car industry).
VW showed off its T-Roc small SUV, which offers nothing revolutionary but which will follow the likes of the Range Rover Evoque and the MINI brand in offering enormous personalisation. Compared to the more strait-laced models in the Volkswagen range, the T-Roc attempts to be more emotional and exciting. We’ll see about that when it hits showrooms next year.
Volkswagen also served up further evolutions of its electric vehicle concepts, the ID Buzz and ID Crozz. Leading the way for up to 80 new electrified models from across the Volkswagen Group by 2025, the production Crozz should arrive in 2020, ahead of the Buzz in 2022.

Mercedes-Benz makes the case for hydrogen
While most car manufacturers are looking squarely at batteries to deliver electricity, Mercedes-Benz remains part of the minority who still insist that hydrogen fuel cells will play an important role in powering electric cars over coming decades.
In Frankfurt, Mercedes showed off a different kind of plug-in hybrid; a GLC SUV that combined a hydrogen fuel cell with a battery to delivery electricity in two ways. Promising considerable advantages over a regular plug-in hybrid (the fuel cell and the battery both supply electricity to the same motor, rather than having to fit both a petrol engine and an electric motor on board), the GLC F-Cell could enter limited production in the next year or so.
Mercedes also previewed an upcoming electric small car and its next-generation A-Class hatchback with the EQA concept car. The production EQA will not replace the A-Class, and will likely be built on a completely different platform to maximise the advantages of its electric drivetrain. It’s possible that the next A-Class, due in 2019, could be the last conventionally-powered small car from Mercedes-Benz.

MINI and Honda preview new electric city cars
With large cities likely to be the major battleground for electric vehicle sales over the next few years, both MINI and Honda rolled out concepts that preview production models that will go on sale by 2019.
The MINI Electric Concept gave an early indication of what the production model will look like, smoothing out some of the traditional MINI design cues to improve airflow. Interior design was not part of the project, so the car on the Frankfurt stand had simple blacked-out windows. Also not up for discussion was any detail of the electric powertrain, which will be revealed at a later date.
The Honda Urban EV combines retro design cues with future tech in a far more successful way than any MINI design since the original BMW MINI back in 2001. Paying homage to the original 1970s Honda Civic, the Urban EV previews an all-electric city car that is set to hit the streets by 2019.
Set to be the flag-bearer for Honda’s electric programme, the Urban EV will lead a wave of electrified models starting with the CR-V Hybrid, set to be launched next year. Honda’s target is for two-thirds of all European sales to be hybrid or electric models by 2025.

Jaguar goes electric SUV racing
Despite many thousands of Jaguar fans wishing that the manufacturer would throw its hand into world-class racing series like Formula One, WEC/Le Mans or even GT3 racing, the company has again dodged its major rivals by announcing a single-make race series for its new I-Pace electric SUV.
Billed as a support series for the Formula E championship (best not to ask about how Jaguar’s debut season went), we can expect to see the I-Pace eTrophy series get underway in conjunction with the 2018/19 Formula E season.
Meanwhile, the F-Type sits in the corner, just begging to be developed into a GT3 race car…

Next page: Looking further ahead – will we even drive in the future? As with the Geneva motor show earlier this year, the development of autonomous vehicles continued to throw up some fascinating concept cars.
Some manufacturers worked on the transition between manual and automatic driving, while others showed off concepts for a fully-automated future.
Audi Aicon predicts a first-class future
Audi’s Aicon (short for AI concept) envisages a completely self-driving future, with not a steering wheel or brake pedal in sight. Instead, passengers can relax in a cabin that has been inspired by first-class aeroplane cabins.
Cabin space is huge, thanks to an overall vehicle size longer than the Audi A8 flagship saloon. Passengers can stretch out in comfort while the car takes care of the driving. And since the car’s “brain” uses radar and laser systems to see where it’s going, there’s no need for traditional headlights. Instead of being used to see where you’re going, the Aicon’s elaborate LED units are used for people to see it coming.
Renault makes your car a part of your home
The Renault Symbioz concept was very similar to the Audi Aicon, forecasting a fully-autonomous electric luxury vehicle for 2030 or thereabouts. But Renault has also been thinking about how such a vehicle can integrate with the rest of your life, for those times when it’s not delivering you from A to B.
Inspired by the design of living rooms, Renault sees the Symbioz being used as an extra room of your house, where you can either sit and chat with a friend (or whatever else you might want to do in the privacy of your back seat), or lock yourself away to do some work away from the disruption of the rest of the family.
The Symbioz would also sync with your diary to manage energy consumption for best efficiency. If you don’t have any trips planned, it will use the electricity in its battery to power your house. Then it will charge up overnight when electricity is cheap to be full of charge before you need it again. Of course, if you’re rubbish at keeping a diary or like being spontaneous in your driving, it might not be for you…
A smart vision for future car use
Daimler’s city car brand, smart, has already announced plans to go fully-electric in coming years. At Frankfurt, smart showed off a concept car called the Vision EQ, a self-driving city car that will act like a driverless cab to pick up and drop off passengers as it goes along.
There were no great surprises at Frankfurt, with every major new model having been already announced, previewed or teased in advance of press day. The major reveal of the show was the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE, and the only real surprise was that it was uglier than almost every media rendering had predicted…
Unsurprisingly, there were no great announcements about any new diesel engines or models. Industry figures continue to insist that diesel cars will play an important role for the foreseeable future, but the end point for diesel seems to be getting ever closer. A flurry of new electrified vehicles that will arrive over the next few years will only hasten its demise.
Next up is the Tokyo motor show, where we can expect to see what the major Japanese manufacturers have to offer in the way of concept cars and new metal.
Car manufacturers electrify Frankfurt The Frankfurt motor show is, by far, the largest motor show in Europe and held every two years.

SUVs and EVs: Volkswagen Outlines Future-Product Strategy
–
Volkswagen has been running on slim margins in the United States and beyond—further squeezed by the costs related to the diesel-emissions scandal. To increase its profitability, it’s shifting as quickly as it can toward the growing market of SUVs and crossovers. It has a lot of ground to make up. The company is ramping up some 19 SUV and crossover models globally by 2020, according to Herbert Diess, head of the Volkswagen brand. By 2020, Volkswagen’s global sales will be 40 percent SUVs and crossovers, versus its current level of less than 15 percent.
–
Diess pointed to the new Tiguan, which recently launched in the United States, China, and Russia, as “a very good example” of this strategy, saying, “It’s working worldwide.” The 2018 Tiguan is significantly larger than its predecessor and has a third row of seats; at the moment, it’s selling alongside the decade-old previous-generation model, now called the Tiguan Limited. Volkswagen also recently unveiled the T-Roc subcompact crossover in Europe, but, even though that segment is red hot in the U.S., VW brand bosses said the T-Roc may never be sold in this country. “There are other options that potentially fit better to the American market,” said Hinrich Woebcken, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America.
–
A five-seat version of the Atlas also is possible, Woebcken said. Production of the seven-seat Atlas, in Chattanooga, is currently running at about 400 per day, and VW has the capacity to double that. It also builds the Passat there, and VW execs did not rule out producing an electric vehicle in Tennessee as well.
–
Meanwhile, the German automaker is advancing further in areas such as electrification—with a sharp prod from regulators—and connected-vehicle technology. In California, VW is required to offer at least three all-electric vehicles by the end of 2020, including two all-electric SUVs, as part of settlements from its emissions cheating. The automaker has agreed to sell those models in the state at least through 2025.

Last month in Pebble Beach, Volkswagen showed off the all-electric I.D. Buzz microbus, an homage to the old Grateful Dead–chasing vans of the 1960s. The I.D. Buzz won’t arrive until 2022. Matthias Erb, Volkswagen’s chief engineering officer and head of product strategy for North America, said that there is nostalgia among Volkswagen’s ranks for these kinds of off-kilter vehicles that connect with consumers—so a future with more “emotional” vehicles is part of VW’s strategy for the U.S. market.

Interestingly, both Diess and Erb named Tesla as an automaker they’re watching. “Tesla is going to become much more of a competitor for us,” Diess said while speaking about the Volkswagen’s own electrification strategy. Asked if there was anything specific about Tesla that Volkswagen would like to compete with, he said the young EV company has done a good job of making the passenger car a “key point in the internet,” with over-the-air updates, the capability to send and receive information from web-based cloud-storage systems, and the ability to improve its functionality during its life cycle. Volkswagen will add updatable technology as part of its new electric-vehicle architecture, starting in 2020 or 2021, according to Diess.

“So I think Tesla is challenging the industry in various ways,” he said. “And we have to take them very seriously.”
