headcanon; types in Isshu! Basically, pokémon types have sort of always been around, but also are sort of a very modern idea. Generally speaking, in the past they were used as a general means of grouping similar pokémon based on characteristics, environments, and/or abilities. It was less concerned with battle, advantages, and disadvantages and more just,,, general classification. Naturally, different cultures had different ideas and types taken into account. The Isshu “types” were also generally accepted well into early Unovan times; Isshu and Kalos actually didn’t have all that different ideas about type categories on the grander scale.
The standard types are generally self-explanatory: fire (RES), water (UNDI), and ice (ICIR) were all more or less the same as they are in modern Unova. Those are all pretty face-value, easy to understand, etc.
Next is steel (FERUN) - again, primarily the same, but one thing to note is that there were no dual-types in Isshu; a pokemon was categorized by its primary traits. If it spat fire, it was a fire type.
Ground (TERI, earth) encompassed both ground and rock types as there was no distinction between them at that time and normal (ASIN, a word meaning truthful, but also connotations of “simple” or straightforward) collectively referred to not only normal types, but most fighting types as well. Storms (YUSI) was associated with both flying and electric types. And Nature (VIRI), encompassed bug and grass types.
Ghost, psychic, and a number of dark types fell under a joint typing of “supernatural” or “otherworldly” (AMUS, pronounced a-moosh). this included all psychic and ghost types, as well as the zoroark and liepard lines. all other dark types (scraggy, hydreigon, pawniard) fell under the category of their secondary typings.
Finally, there’s Dragon (REMA)--however, while this included dragons alone, it also collectively referred to all of the legendaries as well due to the word’s double-meaning of “guardian”--so by Isshu Standards(TM), victini and meloetta were the same “type” as kyurem.

Viris: "what do you call a clock on a belt?" Silence. "A WAIST of time.." Satisfied giggles.
Blayz had no idea what this creature was but, he looked at it with a deadpan expression before covering his mouth and quickly turning away.“Pffftsnrk! Ahaha! That’s a good one!”

Mic: "Oooooh Viris, you glow like a golden beauty, and you have the charms that many can't compare.
You are a shining sun, and as white as natural snow.... with your fur having a valiant flow through the air.
My dear, you will always be my diamond... and to that I say amen."
