The chase

Here, have a random dreamswap fic that I wrote as action scene practice

(TW: swearing, mentions of gun use, mentions of injury)

Everything seemed to happen so fast. 

One moment, Nightmare was curled up in an abandoned apartment complex, bundled up in a ragged blanket with the scent of rotting carpet and dusty, old wallpaper invading his senses.  The next, he was running with barely a moment to catch a breath.

He’d figured he’d laid low enough to spend a night there. It was abandoned too, and by all means he shouldn’t have been caught. But clearly he’d underestimated how hot on his trail JR was.

When it all started, he’d at first tried to hide. He crammed his small frame into the bathroom, letting the lock click quietly and holding his breath as the sound of distant footsteps on old floors thudded across the abandoned building.

 It wasn’t a pleasant hiding spot, and by no means a smart one. It was simply the best he could think of in the heat of the moment.

Nightmare grit his teeth as he felt a sudden coldness seeping into the fabric of his trousers. The damp smell alone was enough to tell him that the toilet in this room was leaking, and he wasn’t so enthused that his only set of clothes were now soaking in that cold, dirty water. His thoughts were quickly silenced, breath hitching as he heard the door to the apartment he was hiding in creak open, followed shortly by those footsteps.

 They were so close now. Nightmare wasn’t sure if that thudding noise was the thump of his own heartbeat, or the footsteps that were stepping dangerously close to him.

He held his breath, knowing that the only thing separating him from the JR soldiers was a thin, aged wall. His violet eyes peered warily at the door. Even in the darkness of that unlit bathroom, he could see the outline of light that peeked through the door frame, flickering every few moments as bodies passed by in search. If it weren’t for his back already being pressed up against the cold tiles of the wall, he’d have kept pushing himself away to distance himself further from that door.

His eyes never left the door as he listened out, hearing frustrated voices and the sound of a closet being opened. 

For a moment, he thought they’d give up and leave if he waited long enough. How wrong he was. Dread settled in his chest like a weighted knot of putrid vines as the door’s handle was rattled.

Then a muffled, “Hey, this one’s locked.” Came through the door. Nightmare hissed a curse under his breath, tensing up and slowly lifting himself to inch across the room carefully. His body never left those walls as he carefully slid across them, until he’d managed to get beside the door itself.

The door’s handle started to rattle again, and then the door itself rumbled and shook as it was met with the force of several soldiers attempting to force it off its hinges. Even through the sudden eruption of noise, Nightmare could still hear his heart drumming in both his chest and ears. He clenched his jaw so hard he could’ve sworn he felt the pop of bone as a tooth cracked under the pressure.

He practically choked on his own breath as the frail door exploded into a cascade of raining splinters, followed by those same footsteps that were now inches away from him. Nightmare was momentarily blinded by the sudden light that poured into the room, and his eyesight blurred with a flurry sparkles as the remains of the door itself swung open with so much force that it had slammed into the side of his head, causing him to blearily stagger on his feet. 

The soldiers didn’t see him immediately, facing the bare tiled walls. But it didn’t take them long to turn around and spot him sputtering at the side of the broken door and inching for the exit.

“STOP RIGHT THERE, CRIMINAL!” One of the JR soldiers yelled, attempting to back Nightmare into a corner with force. Even through the haze of his vision, the pounding pain of his now aching head, Nightmare pushed past the soldier and made a break for the room beyond the bathroom.

Before he knew it, he was shoving through the apartment door and sprinting across old hallways, the sounds of yelling following close behind him as his mind kicked into flight mode. 

His mind went blank, only focused on evading the soldiers that gave chase. His legs were aching from running, throat feeling almost ripped raw from his sharp and rapid intake of the musty dust filled air that this place had, but those pains were numbed by the adrenaline and drive to escape.

“S-SHIT-” He hissed out between his clenched teeth as the sudden sound of a bang echoed and bounced across the walls. Hot metal brushed the tip of his ear, tearing at the flesh as it passed and shattered one of the windows up ahead. The scent of burning, smokey gunfire filled the stale air as Nightmare skidded the turn, narrowly avoiding slamming up against the window and falling through. His head spinning, yet ignoring the broken glass that was slicing through his boots and into the heels of his feet. His senses were flooded with a rush to his ears, the damp warm blood running down the side of his face, the ringing, the smell, the panic. His vision was blurred, but even through all that he pushed forward. He couldn’t allow himself to falter for even a moment.

He felt as though his heart would crack his ribs as it drummed faster through the panic and rush of the chase. For a moment, he considered finding another room to hide in. But that was quickly shaken off as he turned his head to see how close his pursuers were. They couldn’t have been more than a few arms lengths away. Not to mention they were armed. “God damnit.” He cursed as his head turned back to the path ahead of him.

His eyes widened. Hope finally shining before him as he caught sight of a set of stairs. Finally he could descend down this cursed old apartment complex. His hand gripped the side of the doorframe, knuckles turning pale as he swung his body into a sharp turn at the set of stairs. He didn’t have time to slam the door shut as he hastily skipped steps and ran down toward the lower levels of the building. His hand slid on the rusted stair rails, getting scratched upon the descent, but keeping his body from stumbling forward in his rush to escape. His feet stung from the splintering glass shards that still dug into them, trailing small spatters of bloody footsteps, but he didn’t care, he didn’t care as long as he could get away from those damn JR bastards.

“FUCK-” Nightmare yelled as he lost his footing. Hot pain flared through his ankle as it twisted and he staggered, his body falling and rolling painfully down those rough steps in a spectacular stupor. His body hit a wall at the turn toward the next set of stairs, wincing as his ears rang again and his head vibrated and spun. He could hear the yelling of JR soldiers as they too, were descending the stairs. He didn’t have time to lay there until his head stopped spinning, forcing his body up and back to his feet despite the jolt of pain from his ankle begging him to stop putting pressure on it.

The soldiers were now within reach of him, which pushed him back into a sprint down the final set of stairs.

He felt relief wash over him when he saw the lobby come into view, with those glass doors that lead to freedom. The air that blew in tasted of sweet free air that flowed through an open window. 

He was so close, ever so close. It was only when he was mere feet away that he felt a sudden spur of wrongness to the atmosphere. 

As he pushed those glass doors open, he expected to see a wide open path. He was wrong, very wrong. The entire structure was surrounded, and before he could even take another breath, he felt a weighted yet quick and blunt strike to the back of his head. The last thing he could sense was the pressure of someone pressing him to the cold concrete ground, the side of his face roughly scraping against the concrete, the taste of blood and acid in his mouth and the sound of a metallic click as his hands were bound by cuffs. His vision faded into unconsciousness right there, and regret was on his mind. 

He should’ve tried to find a back exit instead.

Samone Blaze

Not even she could fight off the rising despair. It was too intense to ignore, and the pain seared through her chest. It felt as if a spear had impaled her heart, and fire was puncturing her throat. She wanted to scream and cry, but she was unable to muster the tiniest sound. Her mind swirled with the thoughts of what had just happened. 

 Her brother had opened the gateway between them and the murderers. Her brother-in-law had tried to fight back, but was killed for his bravery. Her sister had been hiding her children when they attacked her. She had been killed, and her daughter was taken away. The son was nowhere to be found. Her parents had gone missing since the beginning. They were most likely dead by now. Violet, her niece, could be seen fighting alongside her father, Silas. 

She could not move. Everything was happening so fast. So many dead... and yet the fight had only just begun. Her entire family was gone, dead, or with the Manifests. She had never married, for she devoted all of her time to her siblings, nieces, and nephews. But they were all lost to her... and now she was completely alone. 

She didn’t know how, but she started walking towards where her sister had died. The war that raged around her faded into the backround of her mind. The death and suffering became only white noise.Each footstep felt heavy, but she managed to find the strength to continue on. She reached to house in what seemed like hours, but also only seconds. She spotted her sister a few feet away.

 Aviana’s body was bloody, but not mangled. If it weren’t for the sanguine stains, she maybe would’ve looked alive. Maybe. Her throat had been sliced, and her limbs were stiff. She had been dead for awhile. Who knows how long. But she would not let Aviana’s body rot beside this old house. She needed to be somewhere better, away from the battle that ended her life. 

She picked up her sisters body slowly, stumbling away from the cottage. She spotted trees and had a weak, weary idea. She began bringing Aviana to a nearby forest. They wouldn’t find her under the cover of the leaves and branches. It was quiet, and peaceful, and Aviana always loved the forest. It would be a good resting place for her. 

She staggered into the center of the woods and knelt by a large oak tree. It was beautiful there. Aviana would surely love it. A bed of flowers covered the base of the oak, serving as a comfortable bed for Aviana’s body.  She would suffer no longer. 

After Aviana was laid to repose, she made her way up to the old house where Aviana had tried to hide. Her steps started to carry more strength, and she walked faster. She reached the entrance quickly. She opened the door, and didn’t bother to close it. She didn’t care if they found her. She had nothing to live for anyway. Why should she bother with this life anymore. She was alone. Nobody depended on her anymore. 

She started shaking and, before she even realized it, rage flowed freely out of her. She opened her jaws in a painful screech and pounded the wall in anger. She let the tears come, not caring who saw or heard her. She let her mind wonder through the memories, her fists hitting the wall repeatedly. 

This was all Silas’ fault. If he didn’t kill Lionel, everything would be fine. If he wasn’t a Manifest, if he wasn’t her brother, if he didn’t fall for Vanity, if he hadn’t of been born. 

No, it was Lionel’s fault for dying. If he had fought a bit harder, everything would be fine. If he hand’t of married Aviana, if he hadn’t of angered Silas, if he hand’t of taken them in when his parents died, if he hadn’t of saved Silas from falling off a cliff.

 No, it was everyone’s fault. It was everyone’s damn fault for causing this stupid fucking reality. They were all to blame. Violet died, Pierre seduced Silas,Lady Lily Elice called the Cage family special. Everyone did the wrong thing. Everyone was a horrible person. Why didn’t they all just die? Why didn’t it just go away?!

...

No.

It was her fault. She pushed Silas to the edge. She gave Lionel false hope. She let Aviana die... She enabled all of this... She should just get out of there and fight the battle for her family, not sitting in this old house feeling sorry for herself. 

“Who are you?”

A voice sounded behind her. She turned her exhausted body to see a boy, around six or seven. She recognize this boy instantly: it was Aviana’s son. He was alive. 

That’s when she realized what she had to do. She realized her true purpose. She let Aviana, Lionel, and Tora die... but not this boy. 

She would make sure that he was different. 

“My name is Samone. I am your mother, Leo. And I promise I will never let anything hurt you ever again.”

Summary:            

Dread rose and fell into the pit of Virgil’s stomach. His whole body froze, like a rosebush in winter. Stalk dark and woody, leaves wilted and dry. Rose petals brown, falling off in a draft. A cascade of grey and faded violets, Virgil stood, rooted in place.

It could have been millennia.

He stared into the window behind her, he saw the stars, tiny red lights flickering in place. He wanted to cast himself back out into space, a much preferable fate than this.

Trapped and forced to work for the Dragon Witch, a 'successful businesswoman' and 'universe-renowned scientist and philanthropist,' Virgil must learn how to survive and find a way to put a stop to her 'experiments.'

While Virgil was a cascade of vibrant violets and deep and dark purples, Andy and Anton were mirages of black and grey. Andy was like a dullish evergreen. Anton was like a night sky, full of stars as his skin glittered in the light with freckles of crimson and violet. Virgil was like a sprouting zwartkop, a black rose, with bright maroon petals reaching high towards sunlight.

They lived together in a small apartment-like home on the planet Aerth. This was a temporary arrangement.

Virgil was but a small sapling compared to Andy and Anton, yet they all shared many physical traits. They were not only of the same species but were all propagated from the same being. Andy was the oldest of the three, but Anton was close to his age. Virgil was still a small sprout.

Andy was lucky. He had lived for a long time—millennia, even.

This never stopped him from worrying about death, especially since he had watched Aerth slowly become worse, more dangerous, as tensions between other species on his planet grew, and his own planet caught the eye of others.

So, it hurt, tangled the cords inside of his chest and rippled throughout his body—it hurt that he knew that Virgil was not so lucky. That the conflicts of this beautiful planet would consume them both.

Anton entered their home loudly, interrupting Andy’s thoughts, and Virgil trailed in behind him. Virgil’s hand was wrapped around one of Anton’s fingers—oh Virgil was so small, and Andy felt like he was buzzing. Virgil looked up at Anton, scrunching his face, silently communicating with him, talking about his day.

Virgil glanced around the home, and his face lit up when he saw Andy. He untangled his hand from Anton’s, tiny roots flying off into the air as they detached, and Virgil jumped into Andy’s arms.

Virgil, excited to talk about his day, could not speak his thoughts aloud. Instead, he communicated so many buzzing thoughts, sensations, and feelings directly to Andy, through the little roots that sprouted from across his body.

It was all over the place, quite literally, because Virgil was determined to cram everything he had learned that day through the tiny roots that sprung from his arms and head. Andy laughed, amused by his excitement—this small little thing was explaining this all to him like it was a new scientific discovery. Andy could not remember the time when the world was so exciting.

Andy cradled Virgil in his arms, but when he looked back up at Anton, he did not need any signal from him to see the dreaded news twirling in his eyes. Andy tensed, holding Virgil in his arms tighter. Anton looked down at Andy sadly, placed a hand on his shoulder.

Andy was careful to not let the sadness seep through the many different connections he shared with Virgil. Yet all of Virgil’s new and exciting discoveries, his stories about the plants and the sky and the earth and his new friends, made him feel even worse—because he knew that he would have to leave them all behind. There were so many vines and flowers and bushes and people that he had known for many years—he had watched them grow and change and learn and discover new songs and words—but all that progress would soon be lost.

And maybe Andy had never been lucky. The constant migration, moving from place to place, he had to endure to ensure he stayed alive felt like a constant ache in his chest. Many people had to stay rooted in one place, and thus could not travel Aerth and survive like he could, but that could not stop the pain of leaving from tearing out his insides.

<<One labay

And that was urgent. Andy felt along the top of Virgil’s head, gently touching the small plants growing there. He ran his fingers through the trailing vines that fell over one of his eyes, purple pea-like leaves grew from the stems. He watched as tiny violet flowers glowed and buzzed, singing songs into Virgil’s ear.

They did not have much time to pack things, take seeds and cuttings of their favorite plants, but he would try, for Virgil’s sake. Virgil had grown rather attached to everyone in the neighborhood here.

>>One of these days there will be nowhere left to run to.

Andy took a moment to tune back into Virgil’s excited ramblings. He let himself picture the soft blue sky full of violet clouds. ‘that’s me,’ Virgil had said.

Andy could see through Virgil’s eyes as he ran through the field, chasing his friends in a game of tag. He could feel the excitement and joy spilling from Virgil in waves, but it slowly dimmed into a content warmth as Virgil began to doze.

Andy’s limbs felt rooted to his chair. His woody vines hardly paid attention to him. Veins flowed languidly, lulling his eyes downward, half-lidded. Tired.

He grasped Anton’s hand on his shoulder, squeezed it, before dozing as well. Anton slowly detached his hand and began to pack their things.

My ‘sweetest’ Favorite 2019
