Me: In the 2003 anime adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist, most homunculi have consistent cool violet eye coloring. Lust's, however, while still undeniably purple, are a noticeably warmer shade than the others, closer to faded magenta. Closer to red. This is most noticeable in the closeups in the 4th end credits (ep 42-end), making its intentionality obvious at the same point in the narrative where her origins can no longer be reconciled with her new identity.

Ok but rewatching s2 just makes it more obvious kate & anthony’s motivations at the end of episode 5 make zero sense.
the show tries to pass it off as kate and anthony sacrificing their happiness to make edwina happy but that just doesn’t work. for starters anthony really didn’t give a shit about edwina’s feelings much less her happiness. and anthony’s honour was non-existent especially at that point. so that reason was irrelevant
kate insisting they get married did not make sense for her character. i know we are meant to believe its bc edwina says she loves anthony- but she wasn’t privy to the convo where anthony basically promises kate he will cheat on edwina with her. not to mention kate is already trying to save the engagement before that. and I love show!kate but she was definitely willing to make decisions for edwina bc she believed it wld protect her, despite whatever edwina wanted. kate wants a love match & happiness for edwina. and when anthony finally admits he cannot give that to her (like kate had been saying), she tries to change his mind?? she is smart enough to know that edwina marrying a man who wants to screw her sister will end in disaster. even if kate believes it is just lust she has no reason to believe that anthony wouldn’t then cheat with someone else. like idc if they end up cheating but show!kate is not naive enough to believe that A and E would hv a pleasant marriage.
anthony’s entire characterisation made no sense either. he sits silently while the Queen and everyone calls it a love match. and at the end of the episode anthony finally acknowledges he wont make edwina happy or love her. so him deciding to marry her anyways bc its what kate asks him to do is a bit hard to believe. he knows he cannot provide edwina the happiness that kate wants for her. he is meant to love kate. surely he realises that making kate watch as he married her sister, had children with her - would torture her more than breaking off the engagement wld. like anthony should have been willing ‘lose’ his non-existent honour and take society’s gossiping to spare kate all of that. at this point it’s pretty clear that nobody will be happy in this situation. all three of them would hv grown bitter and resentful of each other and the situation. anthony & edwina would have grown to hate each other. and the entire fall-out is so weird bc the show doesn’t bother to acknowledge that most of this was anthony’s fault?? like fine edwina doesn’t care abt anymore (lol you can be mad at more than one person). but kate never asks anthony why he proposed to edwina despite claiming to love her??
the whole bangle drop moment was entertaining. but the entire build up to the wedding just made the characters look like idiots (and not the fun kind). the show had to give lady danbury a different personality to s1 and even ep 1 for the wedding to happen. and i’m still confused on how much violet, benedict and colin knew or didnt know abt anthony’s feelings. it’s very clear that the writers wanted the drama of the wedding + forbidden love & to do that had to sacrifice character development and good storytelling.
the engagement shld have ended after the dowry reveal and the sharma’s conflict shld have been abt that. edwina deserved the truth & be able to make her own decisions. and kate should not hv even been responsible for these financial decisions as she is not the parent. that way the show could hv actually shown Mary parent her children & hv the Sharma sisters talk rather than all of them giving grand speeches to each other. and kate and anthony could hv had time to develop an actual emotional connection (rather than angst) as well.

Naur i really thought violet would be involved other than snide commentary but alas i am disappointed yet again
Idk if it was snide per se but her motivations this season really confused me!! At first she was like ‘maybe I can change Anthony’s mind’ abt the whole not looking for love thing. And like shared all those smiles with Lady D in episode 3 etc, looked happy about the courtship with Edwina.
But then she changed her mind and was always asking Anthony if he was sure he wanted to marry Edwina? Or telling him there were ways to get out of it? But really didn’t do anything beyond that at all. Didn’t discuss with Lady D or anything?
And she was clearly noticing Kathony stuff as early as episode 2 but needed Daphne’s confirmation to figure it out. And then once it was confirmed was like,,,well we can’t have scandal so you gotta marry someone else Anthony??!?!
Like. I’m not expecting her to say ‘run off be with kate right now,’ but asking him if he was going to REMARRY SOMEONE ELSE THAT SEASON???!?? Marry not for love because he’s clearly not in a place where he can do it??!!?
I’ve discussed this matter with @grantairesbottle and it’s clear violet knew he didn’t love Edwina but didn’t know he loved Kate. Or else why would she suggest that in ep 7?
She must have thought it was just lust again or using Kate as an escape like he did with the mistresses.
But then she flipped on a dime after Kate woke up with no explanation. Like what made her realize it was love with them? I assume it was him breaking down in that moment, but it was written very unclearly.
This is not violet slander it’s just a little shade. It’s clear she doesn’t know her son, who she has been running her family with for ten years, at all. He has kept a lot from her so I can’t entirely blame her, but she’s unobservant, unaware of herself and doesn’t have a clear set of priorities.

I wish the engagement had ended in ep 5 as well. They could’ve kept all the scandal and interpersonal drama basically the same.
However, I don’t know how it could play out differently for Edwina to suss out Anthony/Kate. Her obliviousness was past the point of believability to me, so short of Kate and/or Anthony coming clean I don’t think Edwina could’ve realized on her own to then end the engagement. What’s an equivalent of the altar bangle drop? Daphne, Lady Danbury, and Violet all caught on to varying degrees before the wedding. While most of the Anthony/Kate interaction was in private, the fact that Edwina didn’t catch on to her own sister’s feelings/behavior (however discreet/private Kate was) and her own fiancé’s was kind of ridiculous. So I don’t see how the engagement ends without it being Anthony to call it off because Edwina was not perceptive about anything until the literal eleventh hour.
True. I guess Edwina would have to walk in on Kate and Anthony breathing heavily on each other's faces for her to realize, or Kate/Anthony could fess up, and the inevitable chewing out would occur.
That being said, I disagree- it's not ridiculous Edwina that didn't catch on, particularly since there were no overt signs of them violently lusting liking each other when they were around her. To put the onus on her to "figure it out" is incorrect, particularly since this is her sister we're talking about, someone Edwina trusted implicitly and probably could never imagine conducting an emotional affair with her fiance behind her back. I mean really, how was she supposed to "perceive" it when Kate was like "no I HATE him" until they were engaged? I don't know if y'all have sisters, but I'm more willing to take my sister's word for it and trust her implicitly rather than magically "perceive" an attraction Kate/Anthony purposefully hid, suppressed, and barely recognized the depths of themselves.

Trying to decide if the stills of the Sharma’s all in purple dresses that seem to match what Kate’s wearing in the sexy clip from the trailer is theit wedding or just an engagement ball for Kate and Anthony. Because the two families seem way too close for it to be anything more casual and I don’t think everyone would be that happy if it was a party for Anthony and Edwina? Kind of hope it’s an engagement ball and they’re getting it on a bit before the wedding.
Yeah, the closeness of the families (Violet being all tight with Mary and Edwina) seems to be too much for people who aren't in laws or about to be in laws. I'm not sure if we got an episode number for the still with the women in purple; I could've sworn it was kind of an early ep, but maybe not?
But yeah, at a glance the dress she's wearing in that still seems to be similar to the dress she's stripping out of... and so do the gloves. I do think that stripping clip is probably after the wedding, as he's wearing a flower at his lapel, which seems to be a wedding thing. But it would be truly WILD to me if they released stills of Kate in her wedding dress in advance, even if it isn't an obvious wedding dress; plus, it would honestly be weird for me if Mary and Edwina dressed in like... matching tones lol. I know this isn't a modern wedding, but damn, you don't dress even in the same color family as the bride (in western weddings, at least--idk if that's a nod or not, as they seem to be giving a lot of "nods" to India in the clothing this season.... or trying to).
I would love it if they fuck around a bit before the wedding. Let them have fun! Anthony and Kate did (mildly) fool around a bit before the wedding in the book.
What I'm pretty sure of based off that trailer is this:
--Edwina will get married at the end of the season. Kate looked way too happy in the haldi scene with her, and additionally her hair is down.... which imo, is probably more of a married and well-fucked Kate thing. We've barely seen any stills or clips of Kate with her hair down (outside of nightgown or "riding across the glen like Merida" moments) and I think that's because a lot of them happen after she's married/in love/has gotten some good head.
--Speaking of, the moment when Kate and Anthony are together in the ballroom, marigolds strewn about? Probably Edwina's wedding, or engagement party, or an extended haldi ceremony. Kate's dress is that same color. Her hair is down. She's wearing a tiara.... which she does in other scenes, but not with her hair down. It's the viscountess look. Also, they're holding hands offscreen. There's no way they'd hold hands in public, outside of a dance, if they weren't married. I suppose it's possible that it's Kate's own haldi ceremony, but idk that they'd show that twice--imo, she gets married too quickly for one. I'm getting strong "putting on a brave face in the midst of marital woes"/finally coming together after marital woes vibes from that bit.
--I didn't think they'd have the balls to do it, but they might just be keeping that bee sting based off the moment in the trailer where Kate has a mark on her collarbone. What else could that be from? Why would they have the bee sting if it wasn't the (ultimate) reason they got married? And the moment *fits*. Edwina is all "he's not so bad" and Kate is all "I SAW HIM KICK MY DOG EDWINA, HE IS BASICALLY A DOG MURDERER, actually I made that up and I *do* want to fuck him but that's irrelevant". It feels like Edwina is talking Kate down post-bee pre-wedding. It might even be that big moment where Edwina and Kate get a little real.
--Sorry to that man (people who want Kate and Anthony to do nothing wrong ever) but illicitaffairs.mp3 is happening. They're longing and lusting and shit welllll before he and Edwina officially shut down the possibility of an engagement. That doesn't mean Edwina is *in love* with him (maybe infatuated) but they're going for LE SCANDALE with this. And good! Glad. Let's do it.

Caleb tries to talk to Lucien the same way Beau did. Instead he gets both Lucien and Molly(Who's been inside Lucy's head the whole time.) Have fun.💜
Caleb didn’t know what he expected. He wanted to know what Lucien did and what the eyes did. Beau had a conversation with Lucien, and He only managed to piss her off. He missed that in the group. 
He also missed that voice. The voice that condemned him and promised him love. The lips that kissed him and hissed at him. Caleb was… nervous. Did Lucien still hate him?
Was Lucien still clawing under his skin? The who thing was a pale reflection of Trent Ikithon. 
Lucien was a viper personified. He was bright and colorful, but venom dripping from those fangs. Caleb wondered if that would be the last thing he saw; if Lucien’s would be the last voice he heard. 
That being said, Caleb missed Molly. He wanted his friend back. He wanted to hear that purr again. 
So Caleb Widogast did something stupid and self-damning.
Caleb sat down in his private room, shirtless. His heartbeat was even but loud. Caleb focused on a point in front of him. Caleb placed one of his hands over the eye on his back. It matched the exit wound on Molly’s own back. Caleb wondered if Molly’s back tattoo was ruined, now that the skin healed over the wound. Maybe Orly could do something about that. Caleb hummed and pressed two fingers into the center of the eye. 
Caleb took a deep breath and counted the heartbeats. One...Two
Well, this is a surprise.
Fuck. Caleb both stiffened and relaxed into the voice. Lucien’s voice was soft, practically humming next to his ear. Caleb put that thought away for later. Now was not the time for that.
“Lucien, I trust that you are well.”
Even better now that you asked after me.
Caleb scoffed. The charm was laid on thick despite their last shared moment being that Lucien wanted to kill him. That being said, there was more of a layered voice there, like it wasn’t just Lucien talking; even though it was only his voice. 
“I wish to…” His voice cracked. The screaming of the crazed city seemed to quiet down. Caleb had no idea what he wanted. 
It was terrifying. 
Caleb could practically feel Lucien bare his fangs, ready to strike. 
You want me. Oh, what would your precious group think if they saw you yearning for the enemy? 
That had hurt, but there was something in his voice like the undercurrent was disagreeing with the flow of words. The words themselves reminded him of Trent, the same play on loyalty and Caleb wondered briefly if, in the worst possible scenario, if Trent would have lead the Tomb Takers in the way that he leads the volstruckers. 
Caleb shook that thought out of his head. That possibility wasn’t relevant. 
“I find that you are the one yearning, not me.” 
You brave fool. You could never lie to me.
That voice was different. It was softer, full of affection, contrasting with the destructive lust that Lucien usually spoke with. This was the kind of voice that Caleb truly missed. This was the same voice that spoke as Lucien, but this was different in the way it resonated with Caleb. Oh. ok. That made things very different.
“Well, you’ve told me more than you planned to. I thank you for that. May we see you and finish this. 
The dual tones responded in opposite directions. Lucien hissed angrily in infernal, losing the cool that he treasured keeping so much. The soothing undercurrent purred and it soothed the pain in his soul for just a moment, like this was where he was meant to be. Caleb ended the connection. Lucien tried to pull him back, one more eye searing into his skin. It failed. Caleb pulled his head away from a false gaze, no one was looking at him. He no longer felt the anger from Lucien and the affection from the other voice.

The other shoe dropped. The rest of the Tomb Takers laid dead and dying. The Mighty Nein stood bloodied and alive. Things were looking up, at least for the group as a whole. Lucien stood in a secluded section of the battlefield, caleb at his feet. The screaming city had been dissolved, the nonagon had no power over caleb, but Caleb was beaten. Lucien smiled. 
“You know the worst part is, Your friend is still here. I can feel him. He actually is fond of you. I see the appeal.” Lecien whispered, venom spewing from his tongue. Caleb kept his eyes locked on Lucien. Lucien’s face was cold, angry furious. There were bruises all over his face. The eyes were sad a full of grief.
“You shouldn’t take things that don’t belong to you,” Caleb spoke quietly, more rasp than vocalizations. 
Lucien hissed. Caleb grabbed Lucien’s ankle. It was skinnier than what Molly had. Lucien wasn’t taking care of that body. It was a shame. Lucien was standing between Caleb, The Nein, and Molly. That was not going to stand. 
There was electricity shooting through the tiefling. Lucien screamed in shock and pain, but Caleb didn’t let go until several moments later. 
Lucien fell limp. A second passes. Followed by two more. Caleb could hear the rest of the group catching up to them. Caleb waited until the magic died in the air, then he grabbed the transmutation stone.

The violet tiefling opened his eyes. He seemed to be in a bed with warm sheets and soft pillows. Magic seemed to float in the air. There were smells and sounds coming from rooms over. The tiefling went to sit up, but there was a white mass of fluff and purrs sitting on his chest. The cat was just staring at him. 
"Hello, beautiful, what is your name?" The tiefling whispered. 
The cat blinked, but the true response came from his mind. There was a beat of silence before a comforting voice whispered in his mind. Oh, that brought ideas into his mind. 
“Hello, Mr. Mollymauk,” Caleb whispered, relieved.

What i wish for in future seasons of Bridgerton
No one asked but i want to share what i want to see in future seasons of the Bridgerton series ( inspired by watching too many reviews of the show on youtube). Also very spoilery for the books. Under the cut because i basically made up an entire plot for Eloise in later points that is far too long :)
I am full on lusting and yearning after the kind of psychological dynamic we got in the book once Anthony and Kate married and i am kind of sad we didn't get it in the show. It seems we are missing the entire honeymoon phase. I didn't exactly love either that Kate had no interaction with the Birdgerton's or her own family once they were married for family gatherings to provide levity in the book. At that point Anthony had his separate apartment away from the main house so it was just the two of them most of the time. We were hyperfocused on the two, which kind of makes sense because it was their honeymoon. Now i want an alternative timeline ( which in my opinion is the original timeline) where this needs to happen, maybe in season 3, where we get Kate and Anthony poping up in the sibling stories ( like in the books) but also living their own lives, discovering things in their own marriage, showing them understanding and growing together while expecting their first child.
 I really didn't like the love triangle, aka the darkest timeline possible. It was all made icky and kind of gross with Edwina sizing up, lusting after, falling in love and almost MARRYING her future brother in law. They didn't even show Edwina and Anthony interact in any way in the last episode and in my opinion was for the better, because how do you recover from that?! I like the actress that plays Edwina, but i hope she doesn't return for next season if it means we have to rehash anything from the past with her and Anthony. She can stay with the queen and marry the prince in that other show they have in production. I think it was stupid to not give Portia scenes with Violet (or the other mamas) because the one scene they had together in ep 8 was hilarious and they should lean into that more then adding subplots to her subplot that just lead nowhere.
I really kind of want season 3 to have more chaos in the family, partly because i want Anthony and Kate to deal with it but also because i like chaos. I want Benedikt to meet Sophie at the ball and have his epic love story and that to be the main plot ( including the necesary time jumps and the highs and lows of Sophie's life to be a focus because she goes through a lot so it is satisfying to get to the good part after the bad and actually to get to see that). I really don't care for Colin and Pen and i don't want them to be the main plot for a whole season so i hope whatever happens to them is a side plot which involves him discovering she is LW and trying to keep her secret from the ton so we can deal with that bullshit already and not have to think about it. Also i want Francesca to debut and meet and marry her first husband.
 Basically, what i am trying to say is that i am a little tired of the ton and i want to spend some time in Sophie's world in season 3. To really see her journey, because she deals with real things out there in the world, she has to provide for herself. I want her’s and Benedic's love story kind of only ocasionally intersecting with the ton, mostly taking place at his estate after the rescue and maybe a bit with the Bridgerton's after she is hired as a servant. Until the final act of course where all the tension builds and she has to deal with her family and Benedict. They can give the high society story to Colin and Pen and whoever wants to follow LW in her adventures can deal with that in the B plot of the season.
In the 4th season i want the focus to be on Francesca and her being a widow and the love that blossoms with Michael. I feel like season 4 could work well as a more mature season and Francesca would be a great dramatic character because she is heartbroken but pragmatic, she is reserved but witty and i like that about her. Her being a widow and still deciding to present in front of the ton again because she is still young and wants kids and a family takes a brave woman to do and I love that this is something she decides for herself. I hope they keep this ( if they show her love story at all lol) and emphasize that this is not something she is pushed to do because that is a woman's role or whatever reason that could be an excuse to take her agency but its her desire. It could be fresh to put the emphasis on her story because we know so little of her so far and very rarely interacts with her brothers. I also want an emphasis on this plot because i want to see Michael jealous.
I have no idea what they could do with Eloise, like i genuinely think she should end up with Theo in the 4th season, just meet him again when she is older and just ravish and marry him to provide some levity to the more serios plot of what is going on with Francesca. Plus it would be a good theme to have Francesca wanting kids and subjecting herself to the marriage market again and Eloise who does not want kids and kind of embraces this life outside of the ton with Theo, a life where she does not have to be idle and i don't know, go to university, travel , get a job lol. The story of Eloise with Lord Crane is theoretically interesting because he is an older man with kids and those stories are cute except it was boring and kind of unhinged in the books , and is it really appealing when you know he is Marina's husband and the kids are also hers? Also her running off to Lord Crane's house because Pen marries Colin and she feels alone when she is not the kind of person to feel dependent on others...i don't know , that book is a mess.
I was never interested in the last 2 siblings books and i don't necessarily like their plots, but if they are thinking of a season 5 i want all the cast to come back and give us snippets of the Bridgerton's siblings life while Gregory and Hyacint have their romance and shenanigans at this family reunion. Breaking and entering for Hyacint and full on stealing a bride for Gregory while Anthony just wants to enjoy his family dinner sounds fun to me. Sorry for all this, i just have a lot of feelings.

Hi to anyone reading,
Hope you’re okay! AND that you didn’t end up here because you searched the Lana Del Rey tag so you could see people ranting about her-you’re about to be very disappointed. Sorry. This is not about to be some Question for the Culture discourse because the world is bleak enough right now and the last thing we all need is to be reminded of that saga. 
Being a Lana Del Rey fan is easy, they said. She’s not a controversial artist, they said. And yet 2020 had to do what it does best and fuck everything up. 
Whether people like her or not, it’s made me so angry reading all the abuse she’s been getting about her appearance for the last couple of weeks, because I really thought that if we could agree on anything it was that attacking individuals for the way they look because you dislike something they’ve done (with the exception of shit like racist tattoos and blackfishing) is, you know, awful and judgemental as fuck? Like you do realise when you treat the word fat as a pejorative that the fat people you don’t have a problem with understood that you meant it as an insult too? I think what all those people tweeting about Lana’s weight, and that includes some of her fans, are forgetting is that she was in her early 20s when she was thrust into the limelight. As much as there’s this conspiracy that her dad bought her a career in the music industry, she’d made the decision to go it alone and had lived in a trailer park as a struggling musician for years. On top of that, we have the unreleased tracks with lyrics seemingly referencing an eating disorder in her younger years. OF COURSE her body is going to look different. Why is it that we treat weight gain as an inherently bad thing without any insight into the other factors that constitute a person’s “health”? It’s fucking insane that so many feel they have the right to comment on other’s bodies in the first place and it breaks my heart that she might be reading these comments. This wasn’t intended to necessarily be a rant about how much I love this woman but all the shit I’ve read about her on the internet these past few months have pushed me to it. You'll respect your queen of alternative music or I shall stan twice as hard on your behalf. You can thank me later when you come to your senses xoxo
I’d love to say it was intentional that I finally finished this post the week Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass was released but that would imply I have my shit way more together than I actually do. If I’m being completely honest, I’ve only heard L.A Who am I to Love You so far 1). because I want to wait for the hard copy for the rest and that doesn’t turn up til September and 2). because I do not have my shit together, lol. That being said, there is no doubt in my mind that I am going to love it-one thing I have always loved about Lana’s lyrics is how well they paint a picture and this is something that poetry only more freely allows for the exploration of. That ability to create such a strong narrative voice and atmosphere is a talent that extends to her visuals and the production of her records too, and is something I really missed when it comes to the Norman Fucking Rockwell era. I’m just going to say it: a strong aesthetic is to NFR as memorable songs are to Lust for Life. Lacking. Am I allowed to say that as a fan? The collaborations don’t do it for me, okay, and as as NFR is concerned, aside from The Greatest/Fuck It I Love You video which went down the whole neon surfer girl route, it’s hard to identify a cohesive theme. It’s understandable that at this point, she would want to just focus purely on the music, and it goes without saying that NFR will stand the test of time in that regard but I don’t think we can deny that when people think of Lana in the future, it’s not gonna be a green windbreaker that comes into their heads.

And here’s where this Filip Kozak illustration comes into it; after years of it sitting in my camera roll for years, it finally has a use. There’s really nothing better to illustrate how mundane life has become this year than the disproportionate level of excitement my photo-hoarding-self experienced realising it would fit perfectly into this post and is thus eligible for deletion. Up there with being able to fit a whole box of biscuits onto the shelf at work rather than having to individually take out as many as I can and then shove them on top of the existing box of biscuits one by one. Truly riveting content on this Tumblr page. Back to the point-by using this as my stimulus for the post rather than the Lana Del Rey albums as outfits tag that went round on Twitter, I can conveniently exclude NFR as an outfit inspiration category, and that saves me from having to buy a charity shop windbreaker with its price bumped up 150% by some upper middle class Depop e-girl or boy who uses the word peng as a descriptor like it’s a nervous tic. To make up for leaving out NFR, I’ve tried to branch out a bit and do the outfits not just based on the music videos or album covers but also from street style and stage looks and photoshoots from around the same period too. It was hard not to be influenced by the general “vibe” and sound of the albums either when I was planning outfits, whether it’s the grand, orchestral instrumentals of Born to Die or the 70s psychedelic rock inspired riffs of Ultraviolence and hopefully that’ll show as well! Born to Die (Release Date: 27th January 2012)

It’s been 8 years, and when you ask most people what they think of when they hear the name Lana Del Rey, they’ll probably dismiss her as the one who sings about being sad and doing coke and sleeping with older men. That’s the Born to Die impact. Say what you want but it’s one of only a handful of albums released by a female artist to have spent more than 300 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart and it really established the mythos of “Lana Del Rey” because before all this, before all the think pieces from other women claiming she’d set feminism back hundreds of years with her music, before she ousted grayscale Effy Stonem as the queen of angsty teen Tumblr (which as you can probably guess was a subsection of the internet I was very much engulfed by, lmao), she was just Lizzie Grant, a relatively normal aspiring singer songwriter in her early twenties. But as Lana Del Rey, she was someone else-some beautiful, mystical being that personified the sentiment of being born in the wrong era. Whilst every other singer’s record labels seemed to be trying desperately to thrust them into the future and keep them on top of all the musical and stylistic trends, it was refreshing to hear someone whose music and visuals captured all the most glamorous elements of the past. Part Priscilla Presley/Jackie O reincarnation (the National Anthem video really illustrated how Lana is just as much a storyteller as she is a musician), part high level mobster’s wayward wife à la Michelle Pfeiffer in Scarface, she was the good girl by day and the bad girl by night, and I think that’s a duality we can all relate to or would like to think we’re interesting enough to relate to deep down.
Her style from around this period was EVERYTHING. She had those grungy Tumblr girl elements, the camo jacket and the oversized pieces and the leather jackets, but she also heavily drew on the styles and silhouettes of the 50s and 60s with the beehives and the new look Dior inspired cinched waist dresses. Even now in 2020, I think this period is what most people would think if they were asked to describe Lana’s style. I made sure I got the grungy pieces in there with the chunky boots and the vinyl and the oversized leather but the foundation of her looks back then were usually these daintier throwback pieces like the white silk dress and the corset and the mint fur trimmed coat (House of Sunny’s Penny Pistachio coat).
Favourite lyrics from the album? “Now my life is sweet like cinnamon, like a fucking dream I'm living in” from Radio. Nobody asked but I’m gonna give it to you anyway.

Born to Die: The Paradise Edition (Release Date: 9th November 2012)

Lana’s Paradise EP contains probably my absolute favourite song of her’s, Ride, and with that, the beautiful opening monologue that will stay in my mind forever. This era was of course ushered in by Tropico, the short film that included the premiere of the songs Bel Air, Body Electric and Gods and Monsters, which established the ethereal tone of this period-it’s in the name, after all. Both the album and the videos were other-worldly and leaned heavily on religious symbolism which I’m sure pissed off many a middle-aged bible basher at the time. Most prominent in her lyrics were reflections on the freedom of the open road which corresponded with visuals of biker gangs and desert dwellers and modern interpretations of the Wild West, as was an attempt to capture the nature of the so-called “American spirit” which as Lana portrayed it shared more qualities with a kind of celestial, transient being than any kind of solid concept or identity. She played an emotionally detached stripper and a haunted saloon-style-bar singer (almost looking like a runaway bride) and Eve the “first woman” all in the same album and honestly, if that’s not iconic, I don’t know what is. We saw SO many incredible red carpet looks in this period too which built upon this idea of her as the fallen angel tempted by original sin that Tropico established; I feel like this era was all about laying bare the soul of the character she played, this broken, delicate but ultimately liberated being that was so dangerous to the idea of the strong, stable modern feminist ideal. She went about it in COMPLETELY the wrong way in a post that betrayed the ignorance of the privilege she has as a white female performer, but I think this is what she was getting at in it and Ultraviolence only went on to bolster her critics.
In response to the criticism she still receives about the choice to wear a Native American war bonnet in her Ride music video, I’d like to say that it really seems like she’s learnt from that-actions speak louder than words and so though it’s not my place to say whether this makes up for that error, the work she’s done with Native American reparations-focussed foundations since and the money she’s donated to the cause says a lot about her intentions. Again, I want to stress that it’s not my place to say! But it’s a detail that is often overlooked so I thought I’d mention it here. 
“I was a singer, not a very popular one. I once had dreams of becoming a beautiful poet. But upon an unfortunate series of events saw those dreams dashed and divided like a million stars in the night sky, that I wished on over and over again, sparkling and broken. But I didn’t really mind because I knew that it takes getting everything you ever wanted and then losing it to know what true freedom is.”

Ultraviolence (Release Date: 13th June 2014)

AH, Ultraviolence. My favourite of Lana’s albums and imo, a masterpiece. ONE skip. ONE. Sorry Guns and Roses. I got stoned in my back garden and listened to this (for research purposes ofc, heh) and ended up deciding that this is what I want to listen to when I die (also whilst stoned). It sounds dramatic but listening to this album in that state of mind is such a heavenly experience that I’d be too zen to notice myself slipping away into nothingness on the basis that if I didn’t as long as I could stay in that bubble of awe, nothingness forever wouldn’t be so scary after all. I know, I know, that sentence has big Jaden Smith’s old tweets energy. But if an album is what helps me get over an existential crisis, I beg you allow me the nonsensical ramblings about how I felt like I was ascending into the stars.
Though in terms of the lyrical content the public perception is probably correct, I think the reputation Ultraviolence has as Lana’s darkest, most gothic album (which is something I’ve in incorporated into the outfits I put together) is mistaken; instrumentally and visually it drew more on 70s psychedelic rock and the bohemian counter culture of the period than anything, and her stage looks are a clear reflection of that, and also the outfits I was most excited to channel. It seems counter-intuitive to the moody atmosphere I associate the tracklist with but it’s my go-to summer album; it’s raw (probably her most stripped back work along with NFR, lots of the songs are barely edited) and it’s gloomy but let’s be real, hot as fuck-don’t bother making a sex playlist, just put Ultraviolence on shuffle, and you’re good to go. This was the album where Lana debuted some of her most criticised lyrics and where the notion that she glamourises abuse comes from, one of the points she also seemed to be getting at in the Instagram post, but imo it’s fair to say that she sang truthfully about the initial allure of a dangerous relationship and the nature of the mindset that facilitates staying with somebody poisonous where you do feel like you’re nothing without them. Turning horrific experiences into romantic tragedies is how Lana has always made her music and yeah, out of context there are some fucked up lyrics on the album, but policing how a woman expresses her trauma and complaining that she glorifies weakness because she wrote honestly about the reality of a complicated partnership is hardly any more “feminist” than the lyrics themselves. I can only guess that the reason Lana felt the need to bring up this criticism in 2020 is because these darker themes are going to be revisited in her upcoming album and that in spite of the issues with the way she expressed herself, this time critics will be more accepting of how she chooses to address these themes. 
On a lighter note “yeah my boyfriend's pretty cool, but he's not as cool as me” will always be a great line. Simple but effective. If my boyfriend ever is cooler than me it’ll be doing Lana a disservice.

Honeymoon (Release Date: 18th September 2015)

Considering that a lot of other Lana fans are of the opinion that this is her best album, I find it weird that I really don’t remember all that much about this period, other than High by the Beach being released and then hearing Salvatore and Freak for the first time. I guess because she didn’t do a Honeymoon specific tour and didn’t make that many public appearances in this period? It was definitely harder for me to find visual reference points beyond the HbtB music video and the cover art, so I mostly drew on the general vibe of the album, a cinematic accompaniment to a summer in Italy or the South of France, filled with exotic instrumentals and the sense of impending romantic doom that Lana does so well. I suppose if I associate the visuals of this era with anything it’s idyllic florals and warm tones, bygone country club pool days, a rich American’s vacation in Southern Europe, long walks on the beach (and as our Lord and Saviour Jujubee once said, big dicks and fried chicken). Apparently inspired by Lana’s relationship with Francesco Carrozini, it’s a hazy story of some ultra-feminine, submissive archetype becoming unhealthily enchanted by a mysterious “foreign man” who’s ultimately not all that good for her, which as the story goes turned out to be quite prophetic. Going against the grain, it’s my least favourite of her albums after Lust for Life, but in spite of that, I will always remember how obsessed I was with the sax riffs (I think? I don’t know my instruments all that well so forgive me, lol) on Freak and I definitely understand why it’s a firm favourite for so many.
“You could be a bad motherfucker, but that don’t make you a man.” was truly a cultural reset of a line.

Lust for Life (Release Date: 21 July 2017)

Lust for Life is a controversial one. On the one hand, I appreciate that this album was the victory cry of a happier, more independent, politically-aware Lana in spite of it apparently being a far more optimistic sounding album than the one she wanted to release, but on the other there were way too many collaborations for me and this meant that the album lacked a sense of cohesion and the characteristic narrative thread that usually runs throughout her tracklist. Aside from Love, Cherry, Get Free and Tomorrow Never Came, most of the songs on the album aren’t hugely memorable and it’s a crying shame that a collaboration with STEVIE FUCKING NICKS of all people left so much to be desired. Coming from two witchy icons, I expected something absolutely magical so maybe I was setting myself up for failure, but come on. We could’ve had a real anthem there.
Aesthetically speaking however, this is one of my favourite eras for Lana, which is unsurprising when you consider the tracklist contains references to both Woodstock and Coachella. I’m not gonna lie, I think seeing Coachella fashion in my early teens was my style awakening-I remember seeing Vanessa Hudgens’ outfits and being like, wow, I want to be her (oh, what a fall from grace)-so the late 60s/early 70s flower power groupie style Lana adopted in this period really spoke to me. It was all long hair and dreamy pastels, and this era included some of the most head-to-toe coordinated looks we’ve ever seen from her. Of course I couldn’t completely abandon the grungy touches that I love, that I tend to associate with the early Lana street style days and the Paradise and Ultraviolence music videos rather than with this album, but I’m never gonna pass up an opportunity to whack out a good floral two piece and putting together Lust for Life inspired looks is the perfect excuse to do that.

I have a Yesstyle lookbook and review to edit but now that I’ve finished that, I’m trying to go down more of a style inspiration focussed  route with my lookbooks rather than just putting together outfits from clothes I’ve just bought (though I might still do one every so often to bring in a new season-let’s just ignore the fact that they’re all blending into one bc climate change for now, one catastrophe at a time please universe). I find that if you have a specific idea in mind of what you want, it’s super easy to find something similar on Depop and Ebay and that way you avoid buying new things and also take old things off a person’s hands that might otherwise end up being thrown out by a charity shop and then dumped into a landfill from there. Something I’d LOVE to do before this year is out is put together a lookbook based on the most stylish TV shows of the last decade, but that probably won’t be for a while-even so, if you have any recommendations of series to watch which could fit into this category, let me know! 
To finish, I need to go a little bit off-topic so forgive me, but I truly don’t know why this even needs to be said: WEAR A FUCKING MASK. IT IS NOT A POLITICAL ISSUE. IT IS A BASIC HYGIENIC PRACTICE THAT HELPS SPREAD THE STOP OF A HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS DISEASE! RUDIMENTAL SCIENCE! NOT A CHANCE TO PROVE HOW “EDGY” YOU ARE! SERIOUSLY, STOP MAKING A FUCKING PANDEMIC ABOUT YOURSELF! NOBODY ENJOYS WEARING THEM BUT THEY HELP PROTECT OTHERS! SO UNLESS YOU HAVE A VALID MEDICAL REASON NOT TO BE WEARING ONE, DON’T BE A SELFISH PRICK! 
Sorry to sign off on a rant-y note with something that has nothing to do with Lana, lol, but all the stupidity has been grinding me gears lately and I had to let it out on behalf of all retail workers: if we can wear a mask for 9 hours at a time, YOU can tolerate the mild discomfort of wearing one for 10 minutes. I know this doesn’t apply to the majority of people but there’s always a couple of arseholes, isn’t there!?

WITH THE TAIL BETWEEN HER LEGS ep. 1-2: Ladybug
(A RWBY fanfic for big league perverts)
(AND FUTANARI FETISHISTS)
Blake Belladona was rushing in her motorcycle down the street, her punctuality was an important deal to her, and she was not gonna risk it because her boss is a bitch. Her old friends from Beacon were gathering for Yang's B-day in her favorite bar, and she had to be there for her partner's party. The black cat crossed the streets as if they were her own, ignoring the cars in her sides and dodging any traffic lights and officer she could, trying to waste the less time she could to get to the place of the party, and after 20 minutes of races, she stopped at the parking lot of a western themed place. 
As she turned off the black sport bike, she got off her famous ass, and walked to the gatekeeper, pulling a yellow card with a flaming heart as it's logo from a little white purse. "Xiao Long invited me" said Blake at the same time she showed the card to the 6'11" monster blocking the access. "Huh?, Oh so you are the one who was missing, kitty?" answered the man after opening the door and crossing her name from that night's guest list. "Thanks Bruno, I'll bring you some cake later" replied the Belladona, as she passed the door and squeezed in the crowd. The cat eared lady was waved from a private table in the second floor, almost isolated from the noise of the dance floor and the counter. Jaune opened the chain to the stairway and thanked Blake for coming: "Thanks Monty you're here! Yang and Nora has been making me drink all this time, and I don't think I could have any more whisky without vomiting" said the blondie at the same time he went up to the stairs. 
"Kitty cat!" Album Review: ‘Petals For Armor’ - Hayley Williams

You’ve probably heard Hayley Williams’ debut album by now… 
Originally split into three parts, the Paramore frontwoman aimed to ‘include people on the journey in the same way that I experienced it.’ But with each EP delivered in such quick succession, it killed some of the hype for Petals For Armor. At least for me, it did. Either release it as separate EPs or as a whole album. Otherwise, it just feels redundant.
When criticised for this approach, Williams called out the ‘men of Twitter that just hate the way that I��m putting out my album’ and wondered ‘How have you released YOUR albums?’ Which is rather unfair considering some female fans also felt that so many singles at once was unnecessary, myself included. That and it’s a little arrogant to suggest that just because I haven’t released an album of my own, I don’t get to have an opinion. How many times do I have to say it already: ‘You don’t get to dictate how others respond to your work. That’s the risk you take releasing it to the public.’
That’s not to say Petals For Armor isn’t good. In fact, it’s downright compelling, the singer providing a rather brutal examination of her past while imagining femininity ‘in different ways than people are used to seeing – it is primal and ferocious and gross and beautiful.’
First single ‘Simmer’ attempts to draw a line between ‘wrath and mercy’ amidst a fidgety, Radiohead-meets-Fiona Apple-meets-HAIM bass thrum; where rage begins as a ‘quiet thing’ but grows into something raw and visceral as Williams projects her maternal instinct onto her younger self (‘And if my child needed protection/From a fucker like that man/I'd sooner gut him/'Cause nothing cuts like a mother’).
‘Sudden Desire’ sees lustful urges explode in a haze of fuzzy bass and galloping snares, along with the post-coital angst (‘Don't know if I can deny/A sudden desire/Your fingerprints on my skin/A painful reminder’). ‘Leave It Alone’ is a mellow, bass-flecked ballad that has the singer coming to terms with grief in all its forms, written after her grandmother suffered serious head trauma in a fall. ‘Dead Horse’ confronts old shame with a deceptive, West-African-inspired pop lilt, Williams admitting to having an affair with her former husband, New Found Glory’s Chad Gilbert, who was married to Eisley’s Sherri DuPree-Bemis at the time.
‘Pure Love’ is carefree 80s pop that more than snatches Carly Rae’s wig, complete with power ballad high notes. The New Wave punk of ‘Over Yet’ finds ‘it’s the right time/to come alive,’ while ‘Sugar On The Rim’ celebrates rave culture with 90s techno club decadence; rediscovering love under neon lights. 
‘Crystal Clear’ is a semi-duet with Williams’ grandfather awash in skipping beats and other atmospherics to reflect the singer’s newfound romance (allegedly with longtime friend and Paramore bandmate Taylor York, who also helped produce the record). On ‘Creepin,’ Williams confronts a ‘poor little vampire baby’ that sucks the life out of her atop a sluggish yet menacing bass crawl. ‘Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris,’ though, is a force of divine feminine energy, with Williams backed by the haunting harmonies of female supergroup boygenius (Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker) as she proclaims: ‘I myself was a wilted woman/Drowsy in a dark room/Forgot my roots/Now watch me bloom’).
Standout track ‘Cinnamon’ also revels in femininity, this time in the context of domestic bliss (‘Eat my breakfast in the nude/Lemon water, living room/Home is where I'm feminine/Smells like citrus and cinnamon’). Twitchy, syncopated beats find themselves entangled in a knotty bassline, all frayed around the edges. The result is a feverish blend of 90s indie, sultry RnB and folk pop, indebted to a host of other female artists who exude strength, individuality and fearlessness, including Kate Bush, Janet Jackson, St Vincent, Tune-Yards and the aforementioned Apple. And there’s no better way for Williams to pay tribute than on her solo debut, where womanhood sits front and centre.
Petals For Armor doesn’t reach any comfortable conclusions. There’s no neat bow tied around it nor is there any sudden epiphanies. Rather, it’s an ongoing journey, mostly imperfect and at other times heartbreaking. It’s a natural progression from Paramore’s 2017 album After Laughter, the sparky, colourful yin to Petals For Armor’s dark, turbulent yang.
Something that’s always bothered me is how some people try to curb your anger, that you must always choose forgiveness, to be diplomatic, to always give the benefit of the doubt. That it’s somehow a sign of maturity to stuff your feelings down.
Here, Williams completely obliterates that concept. Rage is now a beautiful, restless creature. It’s something to savour, to embrace, something to revel in. Dating all the way back to ‘Misery Business,’ the singer always been a fine purveyor of rage. 
Bold, lush instrumentals also help to strengthen it, thick with the kind of basslines you can bounce a 20¢ piece off thanks to the nimble fingers of Joey Howard; the synthwork tight yet playful; the beat forever steady. Nature motifs prove incredibly vivid, but, much like life, take on a certain ugliness. Some tracks can feel repetitive here and there, especially in the record’s second half, but overall it’s a pretty consistent effort.
A cathartic slow burn, Petals For Armor is Hayley Williams (almost) born anew. Now watch her while she blooms…

End of Year Wrap-Up 24/12/2018
Happy Merry to all you readers!
I’ve had a great year but all us music fans have had an even better one! Streaming services mean that now more than ever we can experience the musical output from all corners of the globe (though overwhelmingly the English-speaking parts of it) to understand different points of view, learn of the goings on in other parts of the world and most importantly indulge ourselves in a bit of a boogie. All the moods, genres and feels you could think of are out there, so over the holiday period perhaps try and listen to something new.
