Happy 2b Hardcore: Chapter Four by Anabolic Frolic 2000 Happy Hardcore / Rave

So, there’s things about happy hardcore that I like a lot, and then there’s one thing about it that I don’t like at all. The things I like come from one of the genres that happy hardcore derives itself from, breakbeat hardcore. I love a fast, prominent drum break, I love a rich, anthemic piano melody, I love a sped up female vocal, and I love a pleasant bed of strings. And when you combine all of those things together, I’m probably gonna end up digging the tune. But the thing I don’t like about happy hardcore is the pounding, breakneck, bouncy 4/4 kick drums. They’re just too hard, too heavy, and too fast for my liking way too often (it’s also why I totally despise gabber). Sometimes I can get over them, but other times they just totally sour a track for me. 

Case in point, the closer on this mix, which might I add, is a really well made mix, even if I don’t totally vibe to, like, half of it. The vocal and piano melodies from “See Me Climb” by Stealth are still rolling around in my head as I type this post out, and you can tell that the track is intended to be a total, epic beast, but still, those 4/4 kicks just end up rubbing me the wrong way. I really want to love this song, but I just cannot get myself there.

However, there is one song on here that I think is really, really good: “Run to Me” by E-Logic. It has everything that I like about happy hardcore and its vocal melody is fucking tremendous. I don’t listen to much happy hardcore, but I think that that’s the best tune I’ve ever heard come from the genre.
