I really wanna see a part 2 to the above. There's about two different scenarios I thought up for this (you can pick either one). Either A) Audie quickly gauges from Fish Boy's reaction that his tail fin is a lot more sensitive than he might've admitted to it being, and they take full risk opportunity to tease him for it, tickling it more purposely. Or B) Do a reverse version where Seb is curiously examining Audie's features (mainly the thick blubbery skin & flesh around their abdomen) which ends up tickling them a lot~ Accidentally at first but then... ;-)

I ran out of drawing energy tonight but I genuinely did wanna build on this. Like I warned y'all earlier, this ended up just kind of being an exploratory piece than tickles, but they're still there if you squint.

So that, long and short, was how Audie ended up seated against the wall behind Sebastian’s tail, practically being crushed by the weight but not seeming to mind too much. Anyone else, and he might’ve actually finished the job – but the Assets were different from the Expendables, and he’d been patient enough until now to know they’d respect a firm no when he’d truly had enough.

Too sweet for their own good – but in this case, he couldn’t truly complain. He’d take their hand gently running across the length of his scales over scalpels and vinyl gloves any day.

Not that it stopped him, of course. But still.

There was a mutual curiosity he was interested in exploring, at least passively. They’d both been subject to very similar experiments and changes, though the result was certainly wildly different between them. At least they had their legs, he mused somewhat bitterly, though he knew it still came at a cost.

“Your tail must be crazy strong,” They commented, applying a little pressure with the heel of their palm and just missing a knot in the muscle he hadn’t realized was there. He fought to swallow a groan at that, his fins twitching; “You’re built like a brick house under there.”

“It has its uses. Carries all the stock, after all.”

Sebastian turned his gaze upon the scattered straps and belts and supplies on the ground, silently bemoaning the process of re-attaching them all he’d have to go through once Audie’d had their fill. The asset themself giggled softly, giving his tail a gentle pat as they moved downwards.

“It’s cool! Yours is smoother than I thought it would be, too.”

“Seriously?”

“Yeah! The way the light hits your scales, I thought it’d be more bumpy.”

He decided to withhold the fact that his scales would stiffen up underwater for now – had to keep some things a mystery, after all – and simply rolled his eyes, leaning a shoulder against the wall nearest to him and watching them with his arms crossed. Admittedly, it was a little endearing how fascinated they seemed to be.

It was almost enough to distract him from how much he despised his new form.

Almost.

“Are you done yet, or…?”

“Do you want me to be done?”

They met his gaze evenly, and he could only huff in reply, the tip of his tail twitching in their hands. Yes, but no, was the honest answer – and fuck that. Regardless, Audie took his silence as ongoing permission, and continued onwards with their investigation.

More than once, their claws dragged in just such a way to prompt his tail to jerk – more than once, he’d choked on a snort and cast them a withering look that they either ignored or missed. The sensation was more annoying than anything, yet still sent nervous butterflies through his system.

And then their hands were on his fins, and his breath hitched – barely-perceptible, thank God, but still embarrassing. Their thumbs gently pressed down where the flesh of his fins met the scales of his tail, tapering into either texture, and that almost felt nice.

Their claws trailing over the delicate skin, however, was not something he could tolerate for long – and with a stifled snort, his tail jerked. Audie squeaked with annoyance as he smacked them in the face. An unintended attack, granted, but still…

“T-Time’s up, knock it off,” He chimed quickly, pulling his tail off of them entirely and willing his gills to relax where they’d flared up from the nerves. God, that would’ve sucked immensely. Audie pouted, but allowed him the opportunity to call it, standing up and stretching with a groan of their own.

“Alright. My turn, then – how d’you wanna do this?”

It took a little thought and finagling, but the two of them settled for letting them sit on his tail and lean against his body, their back to his front. Their tail curled up between their legs like a pool toy, and they playfully drooped the fins over their own head before allowing him to take the limb in his hands.

Just like his, Sebastian could feel the muscle underneath – powerful and developed, though the joints themselves felt stiff as he manipulated the limb. Audie seemed to wince when he pressed down, and he grunted – concerned, against his better judgement.

“Doesn’t hurt,” They assured without further prompting; “I mean – it does, when the meds wear off, but it’s good for now. It’s just – the bone problem… My tail was grafted on.”

“Mm. That’s right… You mentioned.”

They hadn’t. But they overshared so much that they didn’t remember that. He, meanwhile, remembered reading their file.

“Is it numb right now?”

“No… Soft touches don’t feel like much, with the painkillers n’ all.”

A bitter twinge of mild jealousy sprouted in Sebastian’s chest – at least they wouldn’t be having an embarrassing, dumb reaction – though he was quickly proven wrong when a bit of pressure applied on either side of their tail made it twitch and prompted a strangled noise from them.

“Uh?”

“Uh.”

A beat, and he snorted, tilting his head down at them as he let up on the squeeze.

“... You good?”

“Kinda? It felt like – you know when someone pinches that point at the back between your shoulders and neck?”

Well. It’d been literal decades, but – “Sure.”

“That - hhHAAH, hey!”

Sebastian chuckled to himself as he pressed down again, and Audie whined, pressing back against him as their tail jerked in his hand – woefully helpless, what with their size difference. With a second hand, he experimentally ran a claw of his own over their fin, pressing down just enough to prompt a soft squeal.

Audie’s back arched, and they kicked lightly at the new addition to their torment, shaking their head.

“Nonononono that’s so bad that’ssobadstop!”

“Geeze, you’re gonna break the sound barrier at this rate…”

He longed to push his own luck a little – but courtesy given was courtesy returned, at least, and Audie hadn’t done him wrong. So, begrudgingly, he relented, and Audie slid off him to plop on the ground, curling their tail around their body and holding it close. Sebastian craned his neck to grin down at them, amused.

“So much for not being sensitive, huh?”

“Shut it. As if I didn’t catch your reaction earlier.”

“... Touche. I won’t take advantage if you won’t.”

“Deal.”

That deal would, inevitably, break – but not before they helped him get all the belts and supplies back on. Hopefully.

if there was one thing remus liked as equally as reading, it was thrifting. there was nothing you couldn’t get for a cheap price and second hand—which was usually better than getting it new. music, books, clothes, chunky sweaters and even the odd knick knack—he loved it. but what he even loved more, was doing it with you.

“this! this would look perfect on you,” you beamed at remus, holding up a brown jumper.

remus examined the jumper for holes and stains, finding nothing that could stop him purchasing this item. of course, he would have to try it on first.

“give it here then, love,” he smiled, dropping his plastic bag of books he’d already bought earlier in the day.

he took his forest green sweater off and asked you to hold it before slipping on the brown one you’d found. it fit him like a glove, truly it did, and he could tell by the way your face lit up that it suited him.

“i like it,” he grinned, kissing your forehead.

“great! and i also found an edith piaf vinyl tucked away back there, i think someone was trying to hide it,” you giggled mischievously.

“can you blame them? that’s a good find.”

“i know, i almost feel bad for finding it because now i really want it,” you frowned.

remus chuckled faintly. “hey, finders keepers. if you want it, you should get it. who knows how long it’s been sitting there?” he reassured you.

you took in remus’ words, mulling them over, and decided that he was probably right. he always knew what to say to make you feel better about whatever was bothering you, whether it was big or practically insignificant.

“you’re right,” you smiled, shuffling along to the back of the shop to retrieve the precious vinyl.

The blood was still a bright cherry red despite the rain that attempted to distill it. Its tin-foil scent burned Detective Ava Silva’s throat in the same way it did when she had first graduated from the academy and came across her first dead body. It was easy to tell when something like this was fresh.

A uniform that bordered the forming crowd lifted the yellow caution tape and Ava slipped under it with ease. She pulled a cloth handkerchief from the pocket and pressed the fabric diligently against her nose to stifle the stench.

It was more for the dumpster of the seafood restaurant than the body that was wedged between it and the wall. Ava was careful to avoid the yellow markers and the gurney they had brought out for the hauling of the corpse.

Rain that fell in sheets washed the rustic red color down the drain, even as Yasmine worked gently to examine the scene. Ava removed the cloth and made herself acclimate to the metal and the soiled clams.

“What are we looking at here?” She asked.

“Caucasian male, approximately forty years of age. Significant mutilation to the left omohyoid muscle. Not much damage to the Common carotid.” She tsked and shook her head with a frown.

“English, Yasmine.”

She sat back on her heels, took the pen from her vinyl examiner jacket, and used the butt end of it to run it just close enough to the skin for Ava to get the picture, which she often didn’t. Not with stuff like this. To her, it was a mess of mutilated skin hardened by the elements.

“Something tried to rip his throat out with its teeth but not very successfully. Whatever the endgame was, didn’t get completed. Ripped the larynx to shreds so he couldn’t call out or anything. He probably bled out.”

“You’re telling me he crawled behind this dumpster to die?”

She shrugged “That’s not my job. Once we get him back to the lab I’ll be able to tell you more definitively what happened based on signs of struggle.”

Ava cast a pale gaze on the man. His hair was graying at the roots, and a faux dye job of a mousy brown took up the rest of his remaining hair. There was a suit jacket strung out here somewhere, a uniform would have to dig through the trash once the weather lets up. She imagined him as one of the millions of stock-market guys who started their day before the sun rose and ended it when the orange of dusk took over.

She pulled a glove onto her hand and tentatively reached for his wrist. His gold Rolex had stopped ticking from the elements, right at midnight. The clasp looked worn and scratched and there was the thinnest amount of blood against the gold plating.

“Whoever did this tried to steal the watch and got spooked.”

“Fascinating,” Yasmine grunted, and Ava leveled her with a glare that earned a sheepish smile. “Detective Silva, it’s not that I don’t enjoy our conversations. But isn’t this the type of thing you should be discussing with your partner?”

Ava hadn’t called her partner, but she wasn’t about to tell Yasmine that. It was her fifth one in the span of seven months and the chief had warned her already that this would be her last. It was a rough move, and she knew that, but if she’d learned anything from Detective Beatrice Alexander is that she liked routine, and getting a call for a corpse before sunrise decidedly did not fit into that.

At least, that’s what Ava told herself. She’d pick up coffee and donuts as a peace offering, not at all deterred by the scent of a dead body. She was starving and exhausted. She frowned before pulling the wallet from the man’s pocket and flipping it open to an ID. His smiling photo was distorted by the falling drops of rain.

“Barry Palmer,” Ava lifted a brow and bagged the wallet and the watch before handing them off to Yasmine. “Call me when you finish the examination. I have a name to run.”

Richard ‘Barry’ Palmer didn’t work for the stock market. He worked as a branch manager at a bank. The wife had filtered into a precinct in the fourth district. She attempted to report him missing and was laughed out of the station because it hadn’t even been an hour. A drunk man with money often went missing when women were involved.

She had refused to leave and now it was morning. She had barely blinked, staring at the night clerk with wide blue eyes rimmed in red, her pocketbook in her lap, and her ankles tucked under the chair. Rim-rod.

“I don’t want your pity coffee Ava!” Beatrice hissed as Ava reached her hand into her pocket. The Cadillac was unmarked and required quarters for the meter. “I want your honesty. How many times do I have to tell you? We’re partners.”

“We’re not shit,” Ava swore as she dropped the coin onto the sidewalk, a miracle that the rain didn’t sweep it away. She turned the dial on the meter for fifteen minutes and faced Beatrice. “The bureau assigned you to keep me in check. A pigeon.”

“A what?”

“A pigeon. You work for the county, some big-shot, robot-like detective that has no idea how this city works. Birds aren’t real, and neither are you. A pigeon.”

Ava turned and started to scale the stone steps to the precinct. Beatrice was stunned into silence for half a second and it brought a small smile to Ava’s face. She was being hard on this woman and she knew it, but it was in her nature to drive people, especially people like Detective Alexander, away in a fit of anger and defiance.

How had someone with properly laced boots and a pristine British lilt to her voice ended up in the slums of a crime-ridden city? To babysit. Ava had run her partners away diligently. No one had lasted more than six months.

A hand gently grabbed her elbow. Ava turned around with a fiery glare. Beatrice Alexander had been soaked through to the bone, her coat taking the brunt of the rain. The muffled moss color of her stare shifted greatly from the color they were in the office, which was the only time Ava had seen her. Freckles dusted her cheeks, and anger pulled at her lips.

“Your logic is flawed. Pigeons are simply birds, and you are simply a stubborn narcissist. We both know that you were listening outside of Chief Superion’s office. This is as much of a last chance for you as a first one for me. I’d appreciate some honesty and trust.”

Ava stared at her for a long, quiet moment. Two uniforms stared at them openly as they reported to their patrol car, but didn’t say a word. The brim of Ava’s hat was tipping from the weight of the water.

“Ever seen a baby pigeon?”

“You’re impossible.”

“Yeah, maybe. But you have access to the same radio I do. Where were you when the 187 was called?”

Beatrice had faltered in her hard exterior, but eventually settled on the word “Asleep.”

When they entered the police station, the clerk behind the bulletproof glass looked relieved and lifted his chin towards the woman who didn’t budge at the rush of cold, damp air that accompanied them inside. She only stirred when Ava lowered herself into the seat next to her, Beatrice stayed standing, her hands in the pockets of her coat.

“Miss Palmer,” Ava tried.

“Are you going to take the report for my husband?” Her fingers shook so she braced them harder on the bag in her lap. When she flicked her stare towards Ava, the tears that were brimming wet her cheeks. “I… I kept telling them that this is not like him. Barry, he works too much, but last night was special. Our ten-year anniversary. He promised to be home. He promised.”

Detective Silva glanced at Beatrice, for the first time, showing some type of humanity to her partner. There was a certain tremble to Mrs. Palmer’s voice that rattled them both. The way she clung to the only thing she had that reminded her of before.

“No one would listen.” It came out in a whisper. “But you, you called me Miss Palmer. So whatever the hell you have to say, just say it. Just say it.”

The despair had shifted to anger, well deserved. Perhaps, if someone had listened, Barry would have made it home in time to make up for the lost anniversary. Perhaps, but not likely. He’d been a dead man the second he took the alleyway as a shortcut to get home to his wife just a little faster.

“I promise you, Mrs. Palmer” She made a point to correct herself, “We’ll find who did this.”

She collapsed into Ava’s side, sobbing against the crook of her neck. It was a reflex, to stifle her broken, pained, cries by hugging her close. When Ava looked up at Beatrice as she rubbed small circles on the woman’s back as she shook, she saw nothing but a hard, calculating gaze.

“That was foolish.” Beatrice hadn’t touched the burger that was in front of her. It dripped grease onto wax paper. She had squirted a pile of slowly-spreading ketchup that sopped into her fries but had yet to do anything other than pick at the sesame seed bun.

“Comforting a woman in her time of need?” Ava said between bites, “I’m sorry if my human nature showed through on that one.”

Beatrice diligently passed her a napkin and tapped the side of her mouth. Ava narrowed her eyes and didn’t wipe the brown grease away from her skin as a show of defiance. Though, the more she left it there, the more she became aware of its presence. She’d never correct it with Beatrice watching. That’s what she expected.

“No. That’s part of the job, we both know that. But you shouldn’t have promised that you’d find out who did it. Do you know how many robberies go wrong in this city? Petty thugs that get away with it too.”

“Except it wasn’t a robbery.” Ava finally took a thumb to the corner of her lip. “The wallet was there, and so was the watch. How many petty thugs have you seen that use their teeth as a weapon?”

“An animal, then.”

“An animal? You’re kidding me, right? Animal control would be on anything with teeth that big in a God Damn second. This was a person.”

“Find me a person with canine teeth that can make marks like that and maybe I’ll go along with your wild fantasy for a minute. But until then, stop making promises to the victim’s family that you can’t keep.”

Ava picked at the wet fries. She hadn’t eaten for most of the day. Instead, they had combed over Barry Palmer's work and home life. He was dedicated to his job and would spend long nights in the office, all caught on security cameras. He hadn’t left early that night, but when he did, he seemed to be in a guilty hurry.

He had promised his wife he wouldn’t get lost in the bank that day, and he had. They had footage from a bar on the corner that caught his contemplation of taking the long way home or going through the alleyway that would ultimately end up taking his life.

On that very same footage, they saw a shadow of a person, small and fast, that was barely registered. They’d followed Barry into the dark, but the footage was too blurry to get any definitive features. They had a uniform interviewing the bouncers at the bar. But those affected by alcohol were never credible witnesses.

No one saw a thing.

Ava threw the wadded-up napkin into the red basket and nodded gratefully as the waitress took away both of their plates. Beatrice sipped thoughtfully at her coffee, the only thing Ava had ever seen her swallow down. The peace offering of a donut was collecting dust on her desk.

“Okay. Fine. That wasn’t my greatest move, pigeon.” She drank her own coffee, clearing away the fast-food taste. “I don’t care if it takes five years, ten, fifteen. Those cops at the precinct didn’t take her seriously, so we will.”

“Fine, fine. If you want to lock this down, then we need to find a solid lead. Right now, you’ve got a Rolex that wouldn’t unclasp and some grainy CTV footage that makes it look like someone followed Palmer into the alleyway.”

“Right. Yasmine is looking to see if she can pull any DNA from under the fingernails.”

Beatrice had her mug raised in the air for another long gulp of black coffee. Instead, she stilled, one eyebrow lifted at the woman in front of her. “DNA testing? You’re serious?”

“As a heart attack. The precinct has spent a lot of time and money on the new, high-tech machines. They say that DNA testing is going to be the next big advancement in law enforcement. I think it’s a load of shit, if it can help us identify our suspect, I’ll eat my words.”

“Yeah,” Beatrice shook her head, talking into her mug “a load of shit.”

Beatrice had removed her coat but kept her firearm secured to the holster around her chest. It was a weighted and comfortable weight that was mostly just for show but brought her some heir of relief. She had convinced herself long ago that it was pointless to have bullets in the chamber, just as it had been pointless to agree to a job in the city in the first place.

Something had told her deep down that this was a bad idea. Moving here was one thing, but integrating herself into everyday civilian life was another thing entirely. It gave her a rush she had no intention of explaining away. The same type of rush that a freshly unsheathed record could provide.

Beatrice hung her coat from the small hook by the door and rolled her shoulders back. She had never been somewhere that saw this much rain. She’d never seen the city dry and became used to the view from her top-floor apartment, warped by the sheets of water.

Detective Alexander walked into the kitchen and poured herself a glass of buttery bourbon. She swallowed it warm and without consequence. It burned her stomach and threatened to come back up, so she leaned over the sink and undid the tie holding her hair up.

She didn’t open her eyes, just worked her fingers through wet locks. “You have to be more careful. And get your feet off the coffee table.”

Beatrice heard large, most likely muddy; boots hit the floor. The page of a magazine flipped, though she knew that Lilith wouldn’t have read or retained a thing. Instead, she did it for show, practiced the human nature of things so she didn’t look so disjointed in the real world. The uncanny valley of the way she walked in the daylight, and talked under the moon, could catch up with her quickly here.

“It wasn’t me. Do you think I’d ever be that sloppy? Talk to your protégé. Teach her that a Rolex latches twice. She’s sulking on the roof.”

Beatrice finally opened her eyes. She poured herself another drink and swallowed it down in one long sip. She would let Camila’s skin grow numb from the rain before she went out there. She’d like to feel the warmth of the alcohol first. When she didn’t answer, Lilith glanced over the back of the couch twice before registering the woman’s demeanor.

“What’s got you rattled?”

“Nothing. I’m fine.”

Lilith let out a long sigh and hauled herself off the couch before standing on the other side of the island in the kitchen. Her deft stare flicked to the gun still strapped to Beatrice’s side and then up to her face in amusement. “No, you’re not. You’re forgetting that I can easily tell your truths from your lies, sister.”

She eyed the decanter of bourbon, contemplating a third drink before returning it back to its natural resting place between the toaster and the coffee maker. She crossed her arms over her chest and swallowed the oaky taste on her tongue.

“My partner said something today that’s disconcerting.”

“I’m on the edge of my seat.”

“They’re advancing. We knew that they would at some point. Law enforcement has been getting more and more clever, saving things that have no use behind them. Blood samples, and hair found at the crime scene. It’s not something investigators trample over anymore.”

“Police have never been of our concern.”

“That was before they brought in new equipment that can match DNA strands to the crime. The man in the alleyway, they have skin flakes from under his nails. Do you know what that means?”

Lilith narrowed her eyes and stared at the marble workings of on the island. She had become tense, but not entirely disturbed, not the way that Beatrice was when Ava had first mentioned something in that Podunk diner outside of town. She had excused herself to the bathroom and was sure she threw up, but it was a blur.

She swished warm sink water around her mouth to get rid of the taste and acted as if everything was perfectly fine. They’d have time before the results came in, but Beatrice didn’t’ feel right about letting it get that far. Seeing the wife… it was a discomfort to her.

“Okay, worst case scenario, they run the DNA and it’ll lead them to a French orphan from the 1900s.”

“No, the worse case is it leads back to the bartender at the Halo who just started last week.” Beatrice hissed. “Detective Silva is a thorn in my side. I can only redirect her for so long.”

“Mm. Looks like you’ll just have to sneak into the morgue and steal the sample. Make it look like a robbery, get some blood on your hands, and make a kill for once instead of skirting around it.” Lilith got an excited look about her as she clasped her hands together. “Better yet, make the kid do it.”

“You’re sick,” Beatrice grimaced “You know that, right?”

Lilith shrugged noncommittedly and went back to the couch, this time, she toed off her boots before resting her legs against it. She opened up the magazine and possibly committed to reading to get her mind off the conversation. Beatrice knew how to read her. She was rattled too, calculating how to get away with the same crime they had been committing for centuries.

Beatrice decided to have that third drink, after all. Stealing the samples wasn’t the worst idea. Still, she wouldn’t stoop low enough to shed blood. It simply wasn’t in her nature.
