Villefranche-sur-Mer
Nice | Villefranche-sur-Mer | Monaco | Eze | Ventimiglia | Food | Travel Tips
Tumblr media
After the bustling Nice, we very much enjoyed our stay at the quiet resort town of Villefranche-sur-Mer, just two stops East from the main Nice station on the train. The beach here is actually sandy and very enjoyable. :)
Tumblr media
Our Airbnb is in middle of the charming town. A minute to the seacoast where they are many restaurant options, 7 minutes to the train station.

The town is small and chill, very different in feel from bustling Nice. As usual in this part of French Riviera, there's a lot of walking up and down stairs. When the walk is this pretty, you really don't mind. And the restaurant options are plentiful and delicious.

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild
Next, we checked out the Rothchild Ephrussi Villa, just a short Uber ride away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Béatrice de Rothschild (1864-1934) who built the villa is a pretty remarkable woman: daughter of the richest man in France, married at 19 to a Jewish Russian friend of the family who's 15 years older. It wasn't a great marriage: he gambled a lot and gave her syphilis, which meant she couldn't have kids. So at 40, she separated from her husband. She also is a great art collector, joined a flying club when flying was in its infancy, had a telephone, and modern plumbing in her villa. And collected artifacts such as silk dress and tiny shoes from China.

The garden is divided into different areas, including formal French and cute Spanish, peaceful Japanese, and more.
