NYCSAFF: Kaamyaab Review
Tumblr media
November 20, 2019
by Inakshi Chandra-Mohanty
In the past few years, the new technology and media has allowed the commercial film industries in India to evolve in numerous ways. There are more options for aspiring filmmakers to broadcast their work and better opportunities for actors. Writers are getting more credit and women are breaking barriers. Yet, the curse of being relegated to a side role remains. The fear of typecaste is not as omnipresent as it was earlier but it still exists. And the struggle of being one of those side actors is the essence of this film. Realizing he is one film short of the round figure of 500, supporting actor Sudheer (Sanjay Mishra), decides to come out of retirement, and find one memorable role, that will be the satisfying finish to his career. Along the way, he attempts to mend fragile relationships, and make new connections.
Kaamyaab is a treat for every Bollywood trivia junkie. It is an ode to the Kaalia’s and Mac’s of the industry, actors like Viju Khote, Iftekhar, Jagdish Raj, Mac Mohan, Keshto Mukherjee, and many others who have made a career out of playing the same side role in every film. Writer/Director Hardik Mehta has weaved together a heartwarming tale, of a man rediscovering his passion as he attempts to complete this one last film. This film is not about the 500th film. Its about a journey, triggered by the need for a 500th film, in which a side actor tries to regain the respect he deserves. These actors are renowned and respected, but constantly sidelined. In Kaamyaab, there is a scene when Sudheer interacts with the hero of the film in which he is playing a supporting role. While the hero gives Sudheer respect for being senior, it is clear that he is forcing the kind words, when in fact he believes himself to be above Sudheer due to his immense popularity with the masses. The industry is filled with many such people like this hero who give “fake” respect to senior actors, but don’t consider them on the same level of the hierarchy as they are. This film is just a mirror of the state of the film industry, which is why it resonates so strongly with the audience, many of whom are struggling artists themselves.
Sanjay Mishra doesn’t just excel in this role, he completely embodies the character. Essentially, he is playing himself. He has made a career out of films like Golmaal and All The Best, as a commercial comedy star. But he has worked hard to break the mold by choosing films like Aankhon Dekhi and Masaan, showcasing his versatility and ability to play leading roles. In this film, he is playing the man he would have been if he didn’t have the opportunity to get out of the niche he had created for himself. The man he would have been if he had been working in the same era as Viju Khote or Mac Mohan. His character, Sudheer, is someone who has spent his whole life rehashing the same acting style for similar roles, and after 499 films, is completely obliterated, in need of a fresh and more meaningful start for his final film.
A leading actor has money and fame, even if his/her personal life is in shambles. But a supporting actor has none. And he/she still pushes through. Sudheer has nothing. He has a troubled relationship with his daughter and a developing camaraderie with his neighbor. He struggles. He fails. But he never gives up. That’s the core message of this film. Because a supporting actor has one thing that many leading actors may never have. The grit to continue.

45 Years Of Sholay (15/08/1975)
Sholay is a 1975 action-adventure film directed by Ramesh Sippy and produced by his father G. P. Sippy. The film follows two criminals, Veeru and Jai (played by Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan), hired by a retired police officer (Sanjeev Kumar) to capture the ruthless dacoit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan). Hema Malini and Jaya Bhaduri also star, as Veeru and Jai’s love interests. Sholay is considered a classic and one of the best Indian films. It was ranked first in the British Film Institute’s 2002 poll of “Top 10 Indian Films” of all time. In 2005, the judges of the 50th annual Filmfare Awards named it the Best Film of 50 Years.
The film was shot in the rocky terrain of Ramanagara, in the southern state of Karnataka, over a span of two and a half years. After the Central Board of Film Certification mandated the removal of several violent scenes, Sholay was released with a length of 198 minutes. In 1990, the original director’s cut of 204 minutes became available on home media. When first released, Sholay received negative critical reviews and a tepid commercial response, but favourable word-of-mouth publicity helped it to become a box office success. It broke records for continuous showings in many theatres across India, and ran for more than five years at Mumbai’s Minerva theatre. By some accounts, Sholay is the highest grossing Indian film of all time, adjusted for inflation.
The film drew heavily from the conventions of Westerns, and is a defining example of the masala film, which mixes several genres in one work. Scholars have noted several themes in the film, such as glorification of violence, conformation to feudal ethos, debate between social order and mobilised usurpers, homosocial bonding, and the film’s role as a national allegory. The combined sales of the original soundtrack, scored by R. D. Burman, and the dialogues (released separately), set new sales records. The film’s dialogues and certain characters became extremely popular, contributing to numerous cultural memes and becoming part of India’s daily vernacular. In January 2014, Sholay was re-released to theatres in the 3D format.
