Fic Rec: Post-Canon, Injured Viktor Rediscovers His Love of Books

Just read an amazing one-shot by @carnivalgirl24 and had to come and post about it.

‘Victor Nikiforov’s Book Club’ is a post-canon story that’ll hit you right in the feels, especially if you are also someone who enjoys reading about the emotional closeness and trust that Yuuri and Viktor develop with one another in their shared future.

In this particular story, Viktor has been struggling with pain from two herniated discs in his lower back, and in the course of sitting with Georgi and Yurio in a café — after being mistreated during his wedding outfit fitting in an incident that had me shaking my fist at make-believe tailors — he begins reading Anna Karenina (which has been sitting on his shelves for years, unread).

This marks the beginning of his realization that he has quite a lot of opinions on the read, and with Yuuri’s support and offer to be an editor, Viktor starts a “book club” blog, and begins connecting with people all over the internet in a capacity wholly removed from skating.

I could go on and on about this wonderful story, but the ending got me so emotional, and I’ll just include one of my favorite parts, below. Like the fic as a whole, it is such a perfect encapsulation of Viktor’s insecurity, and his desire to be seen for something other than skating (or his injury):

Over the week Victor put his thoughts in a coherent written order and checked them against the text, drawing out the key quotes he needed. He looked up psychological realism at the library (as while he didn’t expect to win a championship of literary analysis at this point, he had to refine his techniques) and recorded the references he found. He then gave the finished article to Yuuri, whose written English was better than his, to proofread while he set up the theme and look of the blog. He resisted setting a deadline, as this was not a sport and didn't need them - but only just.

It was during a break at the rink, while everyone was eating and checking their phones that Yuuri announced, ‘It’s ready.’

Victor looked around at his rinkmates, as if their reaction in this moment determined the fate of his career.

‘You’re sure it has no mistakes?’

‘Nothing obvious. I don’t want to change it too much, it’s your words.’

Victor posted it that evening, just before bed, and put all his devices under Makkachin’s bed so he wouldn’t be tempted to check them. His heart, made of glass as it was, felt like it was burning from the inside, like a lightbulb. Uncertainty and self-doubt never got to him like this in skating. If there was a point in a routine Yuuri struggled with, he thought of ways to handle it. If trolls filled up his Twitter mentions calling him weak and probably doping, he forgot them faster than flies brushing past his face. With the book blog, though, there was no scoring system, no competition, no perfect clean vision to aspire to. He could picture the worst - literary communities across the world coming together to mock and deride him as someone who should stick to dancing for pieces of metal - but he could not picture the best.

He fell asleep at two o’clock in the morning on the thought that he’d spent all his life wanting the best, but maybe that was one more thing that had to change.

It is genuinely hilarious but also contains plenty of feels and dives into a possible explanation for Yuuri’s love of showing off his ankles 🤣

works I have read by her: I have read all of her works (she has written a lot of works), but my favourites are Pigeon Alley, The World Opened With You,and the rain before the rainbow. 

Why I’m recommending her: I’ve read a LOT of YOI fics, but I just REALLY like hers. She writes beautifully. I don’t even understand how she writes that beautifully. I’ve probably reread the three I listed at least 5 times. I created a tumblr just so I could submit this review, actually. (I found this site and blog a while ago, but forgot to submit a review for her!) I think she’s really underrated in the writing community, but I don’t even know why. I started talking to her (it was nervewracking, and it’s a little embarrassing that I’m writing this, but I’m doing it as a Christmas present… sort of), and she is SO NICE!? Her writings are just so good. She brings her own touch of originality to her stories too. Pigeon Alley is one of my favourite fanfictions I’ve EVER read. I think everyone should read her works. She has written a lot for YOI too. Her stories… made a big impact on me. She honestly inspired me to write again (I kind of already let her know this, but it’s TRUE, and I want other people to know that too). Her writing is just something to look up to, I think. She uses a lot of repetition to get her meaning across, which is ! so cool! Her writing just feels very RAW and REAL, and not many other writers can do it to her level. At least, I haven’t read many others. She just captures emotions really well and her writing is so gorgeous. Please go read at least one of her works!

I’m sorry this is so long!!! I just really wish she wasn’t so underrated! Her blog is also a really good blog! It’s one of my favourites. (: Thank you so much XD

Fic Rec: Power Exchange between Ace/Dom Yuuri and Allo/Sub Viktor

Back with another post-canon fic rec, this time with a gem I discovered during my recent Ace Yuuri reading kick (speaking of which, I would LOVE if you shared your favorite ace-spectrum works, too).

In part 3 of the excellent series japan’s ace, katsuki yuuri by ao3 user FullmetalChords, after an unexpected drop-in on Viktor masturbating — an incident that Viktor feels/expresses major guilt around, not wanting Yuuri to feel that he thinks their relationship is lacking in any way just because they don’t have sex — Yuuri develops an idea around how he might be able to bring Viktor sexual pleasure without feeling pressured into doing something he doesn’t want.

I love reading Dom/sub intimacy between Yuuri and Viktor and absolutely love the way in which this fic went on to depict a perfect middle ground for allosexual Viktor and asexual Yuuri to share in a new experience together (hint: it involves vibrating sex toys with Yuuri largely being in a different room for the vast majority of the scene).

Below is an excerpt that captures the incredible care between them that this story portrays.

He sets down the knife, rinsing his hands before going back to the vibrator, this time slowing it way down. He’s rewarded with impatient, breathless sounds coming from the bedroom.

“Ahnn… fuck, I can’t…”

There’s a slight whump that comes from the bedroom, and Yuuri’s head snaps in its direction, unable to keep from feeling a little alarmed.

“Color, Vitya?” he asks, letting his voice carry through the doorway, finger still hovering over a button on the remote.

He hears Victor laugh, breathlessly.

“Green,” comes the immediate answer. “Ohh, green, Yuuri, green…”

Reassured by the answer, he changes the pattern of vibrations, simultaneously ramping up the speed once more. A garbled rush of Russian obscenities is the only reply he gets. It’s clear, just from listening to Victor, that he’s enjoying this immensely.

Yuuri is amazed, in fact, by how much he is enjoying this. What he feels isn’t arousal, per se, but is more of a… tender feeling. Knowing the absolute trust Victor has placed in him, that the man he’s admired, the man he’s longed for, the man he loves, is entirely at his discretion. That kind of trust is a heady responsibility, and Yuuri is honored beyond words that Victor has allowed him to have it.

I highly recommend the entire 4-part series, and part 1 in particular is an excellent character study of Yuuri’s feelings around his ace identity.

Below is another excerpt (from part 1) that made me melt 😭 🥰

“If I asked you to kiss me,” Yuuri says, his mouth feeling very dry all of a sudden, “would that… would that be enough?”

Victor’s eyes meet his with that warm smile Yuuri loves so much. Corners of his mouth curling up, showing off the dimples that the cameras never get to see. It’s all the answer Yuuri thinks he needs, and then Victor bends down, just slightly, to press his lips softly against Yuuri’s. It’s reverent, like Yuuri is Victor’s dearest treasure, and Yuuri thinks he might cry at the tenderness of it.

When Yuuri thinks of eros, he thinks of flames curling the edges of newspaper, consuming until nothing is left. It’s the kind of love he still has no idea what to do with, a demand where refusal only means losing it altogether. This kiss is not a demand. It doesn’t consume, doesn’t take anything Yuuri isn’t freely giving.

I spent January 1 watching YoI and it’s the best way to start a new year, I guess

So, yes, after all these years I finally watched Yuri on Ice. The biggest thanks to all people, who recommended me to do it, because it was amazing :) 

Now, beware of my incoherent rambling about the characters, the plot, figure skating, Victuri (Victuuri?), LGBTQ+ representation, and Russia, just because I need this 🙃

First of all, I had never thought that one day I would end up having a crush on a Russian man, but here I am, having crush on a Russian 2D man. Victor Nikiforov, how dare you steal my heart like this! He’s some kind of a damn Russian Apollo... So I perfectly understand Yuri’s gay panic in the first couple of episodes 🤣 dude, I feel you.....

What I specifically liked about the characters, it’s their growth. They were not frozen, but gradually developed to become more mature towards the end. Victor becoming less selfish, more compassionate and empathic; Yuri becoming mentally stronger and more confident. And Yurio... he’s such a lovely pirozhochek!!! :D Really, this “I-am-strong-and-independent-grown-up” kid with his love to pirozhki is just 🥰 But yes, he also mentally grew.

For me as a Russian, it was a pleasure to see normal Russian characters in a foreign show. They were talented and nice, wow, that really happened!!! Honestly, I’m so sick of this “bad-drinking-vodka-prison-tatoos-nucklear-weapon-terrible-accent” narrative (I watched Tenet the other day, and I was literally sitting like this 😐 the entire film; they forgot to add a bear for the full picture). And normal Cyrillic! Not perfect or 100% correct, but at least it was readable and understandable, not just a classic American movie with a Russian text, which looks like this - зжэщгардгрвъ шщыралойцы фвзпролдрппппп (yes, I just hit my keyboard). The same applies to the athletes from other countries. Kazakhstan!! Otabek!!!! 

I also needed to pause one of the episodes just to scream at this

Aeroflot (rus - Аэрофлот) is a Russian airline. And yeah, it sucks 😄

But seriously, you can clearly see that they did their research, cared for details and payed attention to things, and I, as a foreign viewer, really appreciated this. I really hope, that one beautiful day shows’ producers start to make characters from different cultures, who are just... you know... ordinary normal people? and not just a bunch of stereotypes?? or necessarily devilish evil just because they are from another country??? 

And now, the ship! 

I’m not really familiar with a lot of anime, and definitely not familiar with genres like yaoi, although I’ve heard about its stereotypes and certain common patterns. Here, however, it was a pleasure to see a same-sex relationship, which was not just a cool fetish for some young straight girls (nothing against young straight girls), but like... an actual relationship? Plus the creators successfully embedded it into the main plot, without shifting the central focus of the show and abandoning the actual sport competitions. 

I really enjoyed the delicate approach to the relationship’s development. Considering the characters’ own path of progress, the relationship they formed were equal and mature. Also their care and clear tenderness towards each other were speaking louder than words.

Sidenote. I had never realized how much I needed a Russian non-straight character in my life until, well, yesterday. Thankfully, I had the Internet since I was around 11, so I spent my teenage years watching a lot of American/ West-European tv-series. LGBTQ+ representation was not something out of the ordinary, it was not a taboo; and it mattered to me, a young girl, who tried to figure out what the F was going on with my own self. But I had never seen a Russian LGBTQ+ fictional character on the screen. Ever. Honestly, I had never payed attention to this fact. Normally I don’t really care about a person’s nationality, so I couldn’t even think that having some queer character, who is Russian, would be somehow important to me. As it turned out yesterday, it was actually important. And, I guess, one of the deeply personal reasons why I liked YoI, was the fact of seeing someone from my own country and my own culture, who was non-straight and being just fine and perfect the way he was. Even though I’m not a struggling young girl anymore. 

Okay, back to the tale, before I become a teary mess again. 

Their relationship was heartwarming to watch. Although there were clearly some sexual undertones, it didn’t end up being just some sexy gay boys. It was definitely about the growth of love, firstly fragile but becoming stronger and more affectionate with time. Their bond became psychologically equal; and they do complement each other, being codependent in the best sense. And it was beautiful. 

However, from what I quickly gathered while reading a few comments, some people still claimed that there was not enough clarity in terms of their relationship?? I have to disagree with this completely. Excuse me, but you don’t exchange matching golden rings in a church with your friend to wear it on your ring finger. You definitely don’t passionately kiss it seconds before an important performance. And you don’t cry your eyes out if your friend suggests you to end your partnership. If you do, I have some news for you, dear 🤡

I honestly can’t figure out what kind of a bigger clarity some people want. If the same plot was shown between a man and a woman, you would get the message from the episode 1. Or at least from that episode, where they were naked making out i mean...... practicing some moves?? wtf it was, honestly, I was too busy laughing 😆 However, seriously, what do you need? Is this really necessary to show an R-rated sex scene for some people just to get it? Lame. 

Sure, YoI was not perfect. Some bits with figure skating were off, and there was some obvious magic going on in terms of homophobia, more specifically - its absence. I mean, I’m not an expert in LGBTQ+ rights in Japan (although I know it’s not  that great), but if a Russian figure skater came out or just had some kind of (publicly known) unidentified close relationship with a same-sex partner, their successful career would be over. And not just Russian, I guess, any figure skater would face similar problems. It’s a very conservative sport. 

But, actually, I was grateful that they showed it the way they did. Fairytale-ish. A show doesn’t have to be realistic to be great. It’s enough if it warms our hearts and gives hope to the brighter future. The real world may be cruel and unjust, but we all need kind and reassuring stories to keep us going. And such story about caring relationship and love is the great example of this. 

Lovely, funny, refreshing, and heartwarming.

Okay, I just hit 500 followers and I thought it was a good occasion to share some of my favourite YoI fanfics! I hope you find some you like!

Viktor x Yuuri

Beside the Dancing Sea by lily_winterwood and MapleTreeway:  Rating: Explicit, finished (13/13 chapters), words: 186584 This has to be my favourite fanfiction of all times. It is just everything you want a fanfiction to be and more: fluffy, sexy, emotional, funny, and creative.The story takes place in a fictional town in Scotland, Viktor is an author seeking for inspiration and Yuuri is a selkie. The setting is amazing, the characters are all beautifully portrayed, the writing is amazing, it is even multimedia, adding a nice touch to everything and it is overall just amazing and wholesome and an experience. Once you start reading, you don’t want to stop.

starstruck by shizuoh: Rating: Teen and Up Audiences, finished (18/18 chapters), words: 58955 An AU in which Viktor is a famous actor and single father of a young little boy named Yuri.Yuuri, who is a simple barrista, somehow ends up as the babysitter. A beautiful slow burn fanfiction with a lot of feels and dorks who are pining and and the sweetest little boy Yuri. One of the first fics I read after getting into the fandom and still one of my absolute favourites.

Rise Above the Tides by Kashoku: Rating: Explicit, finished (11/11 chapters), words: 34869 This fanfiction, my guys… It’s very angsty, dark (in the truest sense of the word) and sad. But it’s amazing and it won’t leave you alone after you start reading, you just want to know how it goes on and you really want to hug the heck out of poor boy Yuuri. The story revolves around Yuuri who becomes blind after an accident and how he has to deal with his new disability… which isn’t good. It’s gonna be okay, though.

It Doesn’t Have to be a Lie by Recesskup: Not Rated, unfinished (20/? chapters), words: 54986 This fanfiction is set in a College AU and is about Dance major Yuuri who has a raging crush on Photography major Viktor and accidently tells his parents that Viktor is his new boyfriend and will come with him to Japan. To his surprise Viktor is willing to visit Yuuri’s family and pretend they’re in a relationship. Overall just really fluffy and cute, mostly two dorks who are pining over each other with a little bit of angst as well. Tu meum Animum by bratinella: Rating: General, unfinished (13/? chapters), words: 47879 My favourite Hogwarts AU out there. Unfortunately I don’t know if the story will be continued, but it’s either way worth to read it. It’s about a certain Russian Slytherin boy who is pining over a certain Japanese Gryffindor boy and how they become friends and very slowly even more than that. But there is also the Triwizard Tournament which is making things a little bit more dificult, for Viktor at least.

What happens in Vegas Stays In Vegas by Gayson: Rating: Teen And Up Audiences, finished (4/4 chapters), words: 21525 The most hilarious bachelor party. In Vegas. Honestly, I laughed so hard while reading this fanfiction. All of our boys are really drunk and do some really stupid things, but they have the time of their lives. Also Viktuuri wedding, what more do you want?

Otabek x Yurio

More Than He Bargained For by Follow Your Dreams: Rating: Explicit, unfinished (15/20 chapters), words: 60838 My guys. I’m hooked since I started to read this fanfiction and I always wait anxiously for the next update, because it is that good. Because Yuri has done something wrong his parents sent him to the Altins in hope that their son Otabek maybe is a good influence on him. Lots of feels, lots of fluff, lots of moments in which you just want to hug them and tell them they will be okay. There is some angst going on, but at the same time it just. So. Sweet. My heart.

Wolves of the Wilderness by NinjaMatty: Rating: Teen And Up Audiences, unfinished (33/? chapters), words: 127277 This story is set in a dystopian future in which Otabek is a citizen who knows he has to die, because he is seen as useless for the society due to his unability to have children. Someday his doctor Viktor Nikiforov appears at his doorstep and leaves him with a blond, wounded boy…. This story leaves you on edge the whole time you read it. It is something so entirely different from everything I’ve read so far and you could easily think this was a real novel. Beside the amazing plot with a lot of unexpected twists and turns, it’s also the most bitter-sweet slow burn ever. Hashtags by abrandnewheart: Rating: Teen And Up Audiences, one shot, words: 7192 This fanficition devasted me. This is the saddest shit you’ll ever read, probably. No, really, it is amazing and I loved it, but it’s just very sad. So if you’re in the mood for a little heart break and a few tears, than go ahead and read this. For a little twist is this not an AU, but canon compliant if I remember correctly and is based on Otabeks unrequited love towards his best friend.

Not your usual love story by arcsinx: Rating: Explicit, unfinished (18/? chapters), words: 62034 Not gonna lie, this fic is very smutty and full of sexual tension. But I really like the idea of Model!Yuri and DJ!Beka and how it’s portrayed. I really love their dynamics here and also Gentleman!Otabek. I have a great weakness for Otabek being a gentleman, to be honest (and so does Yuri). Six Kinds of Love by Frilly_Axolotl: Rating: Explicit, unfinished (13/? chapters), words: 50920 I put it to the Otayuri fraction of this list, because Viktuuri already has so many fics, haha. This fanfiction is really dark and if you are interested, please read the tags beforehand. There might be some triggering things… The story is set in a world in which slaves are legal and the Yuris have been slaves of two terrible men until they are rescued by Viktor Nikiforov. The story is very interesting. It shows the process of the Yuris to adjust to the new situation, which isn’t abusive anymore and their new masters Viktor and Otabek, who both insist that they aren’t really their masters. Needless to say, it’s very angsty and not very fluffy or romantic.

sea town by dolcette: Rating: Mature, one shot, words: 1682 This is a short and sweet fanfiction about our boys going on vacation, but way better put into words. This one is more about the feeling and the atmosphere of the story than the actual plot itself. The writing is beautiful and poetic.

Review: This is an amazing ATLA universe fic with an original storyline! The character development was so well done and I never felt bored reading it. I definitely recommend it for anyone who love ATLA, or just wants a nice AU with fluff, angst, and getting together. 

Icebreaker by Cesare

Summary: Yuuri's husband is possibly not as oblivious as he seems, because he grins and asks, "Have you never looked up Yuuri?"

Review: Okay this one is my absolute favorites of all of the skygemspeaks fics where Yuuri goes back to school and no one recognizes him. It’s so sweet to see outsider POV for Victuuri written so sweetly. This one gave me all the feels.

Young and Beautiful by WinglessCrows

Summary: Yuuri and Viktor go on a date, but people keep mistaking Yuuri for a teenager, which then makes Viktor look like a… not so good person.

Review: The stereotype of Japanese/Asian people always look young but on steroids. This is HILARIOUS! Absolutely made me giggle while reading, especially with how Victor reacts. It’s super short and a really fun read!

Never Met Anyone I Could Laugh With by thehobbem

Summary: "If you could read all that so ravenously, wouldn't you also have opinions, thoughts, ideas circling ‘round your head that wouldn't let you be until you talked them out of your system?

Victor did. Victor had for years, swallowing it all down because there was no one to listen to it. And there she was, waltzing into his library and dangling the temptation of a like-minded companion in front of him every Friday, before whisking it away along with the book of the week. A literature companion, at least. He'd love a companion companion, but that wouldn't be Miss Katsuki, with his being very, very gay; but that was even harder to come by, so a friend to talk to would be more than enough at this point. Review: This was a strange mix of light angst and awkward but endearing fluff and I LOVED it!! This was the librarian Victor AU we always needed! Also I love Yuuri as a dancer, I really think that it’s such a good AU role for him and he plays it off well here. 

 Just Hold On (We’re Going Home) by kiaronna

Words: 23k

Summary: Where Yuuri remembers the banquet, Viktor forgets, and Yakov Feltsman has his own plans.

“I’ve been made aware of your recent break with Celestino Cialdini, and would like to offer you a trial period where you train under me, in St. Petersburg. There are only three conditions: you will board with another one of my students, you will take ballet with Madame Baranovskaya, and you will help me coach Yuri Plisetsky, who refuses to listen to my criticisms of his spins.” Yakov nods at this point, leans forwards and looks Yuuri in the eye. “I will charge no coaching fees.” With a deal like that, even if it means he has to face Viktor again, Yuuri has no choice but to agree.

 Review: SO MUCH ANGST! But also so much fluff! This feels like a very plausible scenario and characterizes Yuuri’s anxiety and Victor’s burnout really well. This one has scenes in it that still stay with me.
