"Nature, red in tooth and claw"Β
Michael Crichton evokes Lord Alfred Tennyson's epic poem In Memoriam in the chapter Big Rex of Jurassic Park, alluding to the concept that Nature herself is brutal and gruesome.Β
In this clip from Episode 29 - Big Rex of the Juras-Sick Park-Cast, this quote is contextualized for its comments on nature, building legacies and ... how unforgiving Nature can be to how we are remembered.

"YOU have no enemies, you say?Β  Alas! my friend, the boast is poor;Β  He who has mingled in the frayΒ  Of duty, that the brave endure,Β  Must have made foes! If you have none, 5 Small is the work that you have done.Β  You’ve hit no traitor on the hip,Β  You’ve dashed no cup from perjured lip,Β  You’ve never turned the wrong to right,Β  You’ve been a coward in the fight."

It sits at the gothic intersection of scifi and Victorian horror, depicting an interplanetary war between our world and Mars. β˜„ First published in serial form in 1897, H. G. Wells' novel follows an unnamed male narrator, attempting to make his way home to his wife. At his side, the reader experiences a recognisable landscape descend into chaos; simultaneously, monsters fall from the sky as fear transforms the humans on the ground into monsters themselves. β˜„ Wells' original story has seen many successful adaptations, including Orson Welles' infamous radio performance and Jeff Wayne's musical imagining. I am lucky enough to have seen the latter on the stage in pre-pandemic days. Following the real world events of the past year[? Years? Lifetime?] how could my first journey into the big city be for anything but Jeff Wayne's 'The War of the Worlds' immersive experience? Short answer: it could not! A combination of live action drama, virtual reality, music and film, the fourth wall was shattered upon entry. β˜„ Putting the horrors of reality out of mind for a few hours, it was the perfect treat. Really, what better way to unwind than with a simulated Martian invasion?! β˜„ Oh, and a little anonymous shout-out to my future bro for surprising me with a stunning edition of the novel that I had long coveted! πŸ™ . #thewaroftheworlds #hgwells #ofmonstersandmen #scifi #victorianliterature #victoriannovel #gothicnovel #generallygothic #gothic #bookstagram #bookish #hardback #edwardgorey #illustratednovel #jeffwayne https://www.instagram.com/p/CTHyJ7_DniM/?utm_medium=tumblr

Hounding Holmes
I am very happy that this reading was assigned to us. Without this class I would have never found this, let alone looked for it. However I believe it was extremely beneficial in my understanding of not only The Hound of the Baskervilles, but all of the Sherlock Holmes stories. The points brought up, along with the examples to support the points really tie it together to make an outstanding article that not only argues a point but creates a different lense to read through.

The Doll Factory by @elizabethmacneal was captivating and authentic book set in historic LONDON of 1850, it is a dark book yet beautifully written. I am not much into historical novels but after reading this I am looking for more books which is set up in historic times. It’s a strong debut novel I would say , it’s starts slow but captivates your mind within seconds, I am a slow reader but I finished the book within three days because it was so engaging and exciting to put it down so easily. I can’t wait to read more books by the author in near future. . . . . . . . . . . . . . #bibliophile #bookworm #vscobookstagram #igreads #bookishfeature #bookstagram #instabooks #bookreviews #booksathome #london #londonlife #literature #victorianliterature #gothicbooks #picadorbooks #thedollfactory @elizabethmacneal @picadorbooks (at London Borough of Camden) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx-SbQanNWF/?igshid=15xjuor2ejr16
