February Wrap Up--
Tumblr media
February was a pretty odd month for me reading wise. I got to a lot of the things I've been wanting to find time for and read, but my overall average rating for the month was still pretty low. The highest rating I gave this month was 4 stars. The lowest was 2.75 stars. But almost all of it sat in the three star range. I'm hoping next month gets a bit better on that front. Let's see the books.
Comics/Graphic Novels-
Novellas/Short Stories-
Novels- 1. Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros--3.5 stars.
2. The Exiled Fleet by J.S. Dewes--3.25 stars.
3. Cursed Cruise by Victoria Fulton and Faith McClaren (NetGalley)--3.5 stars.
4. The Fake Out by Stephanie Archer (Kindle)--2.75 stars.
5. Floating Hotel by Grace Curtis (NetGalley)--3 stars.
6. Iron Wolf by Siri Pettersen--3.25 stars.
7. Such a Lovely Family by Aggie Blum Thompson (NetGalley)--4 stars.
8. Live Your Best Lie by Jessie Weaver (Library)-- 3.25 stars.
Overall, that gives us an average star rating of 3.30 stars for the month.

"Horror Hotel" by Victoria Fulton & Faith McClearen
I finished reading this book. I was hoping it would be a little more scary but I think this book is more for the teens than an adult. There is a fair amount of teen angst throughout the book. The story line is pretty good if you can overlook all the teenage drama going on. I did like the way the book ended though. Overall, I think it’s a decent book for teens who are interested in this type of…

[The use of police dogs as a novel technology, one adopted by rank and file police officers with enthusiasm, ostensibly to enhance 'crime-fighting' by tracking bank robbers and escaped prisoners, but one that consistently failed to deliver results due to poor training and poorer handling. A consistent theme of police dogs, whether bloodhounds or narcotics dogs, is their high rate of error and general inability to deliver consistent results.]
"To further ensure the CPR’s profits were not affected by American “desperados,” [General Superintendent, Canadian Pacific Railway Pacific Division, Richard] Marpole recommended that troops of Royal North West Mounted Police be stationed at critical points along the CPR’s main line and at a strategic point in the south Okanagan or Kootenays.
At the expense of the B.C. Provincial Police, his editorial described the Mounties as “a magnificent body of men” that Alberta and Saskatchewan were lucky to have to maintain law and order in those provinces. Marpole also was not averse to incorporating American law enforcement techniques into Canada. “I am strongly in favour of keeping bloodhounds at certain points in this province,” he wrote. He went on to praise the handlers of the dogs that had come up from Spokane as “men of experience as hunters of outlaws.”
....
Despite the spectacular lack of success experienced by the bloodhounds brought in to hunt down the Ducks robbers, [B.C. Police Superintendent F.S.] Hussey was getting pressure from some of his constables in the Kootenays to authorize the use of the hounds in their regular work. On 20 June 1906, Hussey wrote Attorney General Fulton on the topic. He noted that some Provincial Police members kept their own bloodhounds and wished to be able to use them at their discretion without checking with Victoria first. Constable Young in Nelson, who had such a pitiful lack of success with his dogs south of Ducks, owned six, and Constable Darraugh of Midway had one or more. Other officers had solicited him for permission to be able to own and use such animals.
Hussey advised the Attorney General [Fulton] that in his judgment the dogs were almost useless unless they had been highly and competently trained in man hunting and were in the hands of exceedingly skilled handlers. It is under only the most favourable circumstances that these animals could be successful and do useful work.
He noted also that there exists a strong feeling from the general public against such use of bloodhounds excepting perhaps in the most extreme cases. Hussey recommended to Fulton that under no conditions should the use of bloodhounds be authorized except under the direct permission of the Superintendent’s office in Victoria.
He requested instructions from Fulton so that he might advise the constables in the field, and Fulton agreed that they should not be used in B.C. unless under emergency conditions.
...
[B.C. Provincial Police] Chief Constable Campbell had been eagerly anticipating an emergency situation to make use of the services of a local bloodhound and its trainer, Bradford Nanton of Vancouver. Despite Hussey’s reluctance to utilize the animals, the rule was initiated that under special circumstances they might be employed. As soon as Campbell received the call from [Acting Warden] Bourke about the prison breakout, he assigned Constable Spain that evening to escort the hound and handler to the B.C. penitentiary.
When Campbell and Spain, the handler and his hound arrived at the prison, they were met by some prison guards. The guards escorted the party to the brickyard, where the hound was given Miner’s scent from the straw hat he had left behind. Immediately the hound picked up the scent in the brickyard, and after circling the compound a few times, it tracked the scent to the hole under the fence.
Moving into the outer yard, the hound picked up the scent again which led the party to the door in the perimeter wooden wall. Here it was determined by the dog’s actions that Miner had tried the latch on the door before leaning the ladder on the fence and clambering over. The hound sat down and whined at the base of the ladder that was still leaning against the wall. Outside the prison walls, the dog led them alongside the ravine that held Glen Stream and into the brush to the north. As it was too dark to be thrashing about in the thick underbrush and risking destroying the scent, the handler and his hound, Spain and the guards called off the search until daylight.
Daybreak at 5:30 A.M. found the previous night’s bloodhound party joined by two newspaper reporters. The guards included Keeper W.A. Patchell, Instructor Doyle and guards Devine and McLure. ... The handler led the hound to where they halted the search in the dark the previous night, and again presented the animal with Bill Miner’s scent. The trail was picked up once more, and the party was led through the brush about a mile and a half from the penitentiary wall. The dog was able to show the guards and the trackers that Miner had separated from the other convicts at a location close to Thorne Road and the city boundary. Here the dog inexplicably seemed to have a change of heart, and the newspaper reporter described the animal’s antics in a scathing paragraph.
The bloodhound chase was a total failure, the animal seemingly being out of whack, and its owner out of sorts. The animal, a highly bred English hound, seemed to be primed for work, but after a few whiffs of the damp alfalfa, he apparently lost courage, and could not pick up the scent. He ... sulked fearfully Friday morning.
Patchell also described the hound as “sulky,” and after the searchers had wandered through the brush for two hours, he reported that the seemingly moody and sensitive animal refused to work any more. The fruitless search with the dubious aid of the emotionally challenged canine and his handler was abruptly terminated.
Colin Campbell’s expectations that the hound would be able to enhance the search efforts proved groundless, and it was to be some time before the Chief Constable, later to inherit Superintendent Hussey’s mantle, would again cast his eyes towards a dog to aid in the apprehension of criminals."

Happy 73rd Birthday, Scottish screen and stage actor Hilton McRae, born on December 28th 1949 in Dundee.
A close friend and University of Edinburgh classmate of Ian Charleson, McRae contributed a chapter to the 1990 book, For Ian Charleson: A Tribute. While McRae was studying international law at The University of Edinburgh, he developed a love for theatre as a member of the 7:84 Troupe. After graduation, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company embarking on a long career on stage and screen, but in an interview he says he has always been interested in acting, even from a very young age citing;
"I had a lisp, and when I was 4 or 5 my mum got me an elocution teacher who taught me poetry. She also wrote little plays and we would do them in Scottish community drama festivals."
McRae’s first big screen film was The French Lieutenant’s Woman, he went on to have an unaccredited part as Arvel Crynyd in Return of the Jedi and also starred in the 1984 film The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes.
Hilton has been in some of the best British drama series over the past 40 or so years, including The Justice Game, Monarch of The Glen, Silent Witness, Lewis, New Tricks, Endeavour, Darkest Hour and Victoria. We last seen McRae as Judge Milan Kadnikov on the HBO/Sky mini-series Chernobyl.

Joe Biden says his White House had nothing to do with any of the charges brought against President Trump. But, in her blockbuster story about the implosion of the RICO indictments against former President Trump by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and her alleged Special Counsel paramour, PJ Media's Athena Thorne points to coordination with the White House. And now we're learning just how much coordination there was.
The White House fingerprints on these cases couldn't be more clear when one starts connecting these dots.
Whose fingerprints are all over these lawfare indictments of Trump?
Hmmm. pic.twitter.com/vULtqiheii

Trump supporter and constitutional law expert, Mike Davis, the founder of the Article III Project, is calling for immediate House Judiciary Committee hearings to look into the connections between Joe Biden's White House and "three different prosecutors on these four different indictments against President Trump," including Willis's very special prosecutor Nathan Wade.
Davis says there is "clear, obvious coordination" with Joe's White House Counsel's Office and the Justice Department to bring charges against Trump. Surprise, surprise.

Book Review #9 of 2024--
Tumblr media
Cursed Cruise by Victoria Fulton and Faith McClaren. Rating: 3.5 stars.
Read from February 7th to 9th.
Before I get into the review, a quick thank you to the publishers over at Random House Children's and NetGalley for allowing me access to the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. Cursed Cruise is the second book in the Horror Hotel series. In this one, we follow our Ghost Gang as they board the Queen Anne in an attempt to learn more about its haunting and possibly get picked up for a TV show pilot. But things start going wrong the moment their resident psychic, Chrissy, boards. With a hundred deaths to her name, what if Queen Anne isn't just haunted? What if she's cursed? Cursed Cruise comes out on March 19th and is available for pre-order now.
There is so much I love about this group of ghost hunters. In this one, they've just graduated from high school and are set to film aboard the most haunted ship to sail the seas. I loved seeing the interactions between Emma and Kiki. Their relationship still feels so new and having them try to tip toe around their chaperone (AKA Kiki's mother) while also wanting to be accepted as a couple by her was sweet. The dynamic between Chrissy and Chase was good but not the romantic subplot I was really there for. I liked the mystery in this one. I kind of loved that we got a couple of mysteries for the price of one.
I would have loved so much more detail about those mysteries though. And that's a complaint I think I also had with the first one. The world and characters and their shenanigans are so much fun but this book is just so short. I think it's good at maintaining the YA age range and not being one of those YA books that's really an Adult book marketed as YA so maybe the length of the book factors into that feeling. It was more plot heavy than anything else which I don't love but it's also something you have to have if you're going to be in the Mystery/Thriller genre. I think if you had given me another 50 to 75 pages to dive into the meat of everything this would be a solid 4 or more star rating from me.
Overall, this was such a fun and quick read for me. I've been struggling with my reading time for the past few months since I transferred for work and that has meant a longer commute plus longer hours. And yet this was something that felt so easy to make the time for. A fast paced mystery ride that just keeps you invested.

"People in the media are aware of how illegitimately they've done their jobs that they think they're on the verge of being locked up" —Scott Adams
James Howard Kunstler
Nov 11, 2024
You must admit, it’s a little spooky how quickly and rigorously Mr. Trump intends to deconstruct those parts of the government at war with the people: clean out “rogue bureaucrats,” firehose the malignant agencies, release and expose their document trails on spying, censorship, lawfare, and abuse-of-power. The consequence would be the return of consequence in our national life. It’s been absent for so long you can hardly imagine its power to get people’s minds right.
There are already reports of frenzy among the culpable DOJ lawyers, and FBI Director Wray is set to resign before Mr. Trump can fire him. Attorney General Merrick Garland has gone radio-silent for his own good since Election Day. Expect many abiding mysteries to get unraveled, such as exactly how many federal agents did work the crowd around the Capitol on J-6, 2021 — which Mr. Wray has pretended to not be able to discuss “due to ongoing investigations.” Expect to learn more about the pipe-bomb caper at the DNC HQ a few blocks away that same day. Prepare to be amazed at how deeply criminal these schemes were. You must wonder if the document-shredding party is already underway, despite calls to preserve all the emails, memos, and texts.
Then there are the poisoned realms of the intel blob located at CIA, DHS, State, DOD, and elsewhere being subject to inquiry and overhaul. Think: John Brennan, James Clapper, Bill Barr, Michael Atkinson, Mayorkas, Judge Boasberg, Mary McCord, Col. Vindman, Senator Warner, Avril Haines, Victoria Nuland, Samantha Power, Gina Haspel, Marie Yovanovitch, Jen Easterly, all their deputies, and many more unknown to the public. Some of these names may yet seem obscure to you. They were all neck-deep in what looks a lot like sedition, treason, real conspiracies, not theories. Even state officials such as New York AG Letitia James, Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, and Fulton County, GA, DA Fani Willis, would be subject to federal charges under 18USC Section 242: willful deprivation of constitutional rights acting under color of law. That is exactly what the Trump lawfare cases amounted to.

El profético discurso de Putin en Valdai
Tumblr media

[ad_1] Glasgow to host Commonwealth Games 2026 (PC: Commonwealth Sport) Just 10 disciplines at the 2026 Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2 is bad news for Indian sports. After Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) president Chris Jenkins came to India recently and met Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha, it became well known that the Glasgow Games would be a condensed affair. In one swoop the Glasgow Games hosts knocked off cricket, badminton, hockey and wrestling from the programme, and it hits India badly. Reactions have started to come from athletes at home but nothing can be done about it. As Indian men’s hockey team coach Craig Fulton said: “It is what it is.” That’s the best way to sum it up. Officially, India had written a protest letter last week to the CWG hosts when they got to know major disciplines were being removed. But then, nothing could be done about it as the event is held after financial support had been promised in substantial sums from Victoria State in Australia. They had refused to host the CWG in 2023 and for the CGF, it had become embarrassing as no nation wanted to host it. Glasgow was finally chosen as the host after hectic parlays and a promise that the Games would not cause financial distress. In fact, it was surprising, Jenkins came to India and started speaking about the 2030 edition of the CWG which needs to be hosted by more than one nation. There are just no takers for these Games. From the Indian athletes’ point of view, a reduction in events and important disciplines being knocked off will hit the medal tally for sure. In 2018, when the CWG was hosted by Gold Coast, Australia, India won 66 medals. Four years later, in Birmingham, the medal tally came down to 61, of which 12 were from wrestling alone. India did win medals in athletics (8) in Birmingham, despite Neeraj Chopra’s absence. Indian boxers won seven medals and badminton provided six medals. For the Latest Sports News: Click Here Commonwealth Games. Source: X A definite reduction in India’s projected medal tally in Glasgow is just one part of the story. There are some sports like weightlifting where India has no depth at all. Mirabai Chanu has been part of Indian campaigns for so long, there is no new face who can be showcased by the Indian federation. Solid work has to begin now. Maybe, it will make sense for the sports federations which still have a role to play in Indian sports vis-a-vis the 2026 CWG to get back to the drawing board and chalk out details. More time is being wasted on the IOA politics at present, which has come in for flak even from the IOC (International Olympic Committee). There is already heartburn among some Indian athletes who will not participate in Glasgow. A similar situation had arisen after the highs of the 2018 Gold Coast CWG, when Birmingham said it will not keep shooting in the programme. India protested, threatening to pull out even. However, all that was just tough posturing. If anyone says India should protest at the exclusion of key sporting disciplines, it will be meaningless. It is well known, Glasgow has finalised the Games plan with enormous budget constraints. The more drastic view would be to scrap the CWG, but if that be the case, India would not have been cozying up to the CGF bosses in New Delhi just after the Paris Olympics. It is also believed the CGF bosses are even looking at India as part hosts of the 2030 Games, though it is not on record. Viewed from another angle, the CWG has served as a precursor to the Asian Games for India. In 2022, the situation was different as Hangzhou had postponed the Asian Games due to the Covid pandemic to 2023. India did compete in the Birmingham CWG where the women’s cricket team won a silver medal. Cricket has been junked by Glasgow, though it will be a medal sport at the Olympics in 2028 in Los Angeles. Ideally, those who plan sports in India need to accept the reality of Glasgow and plan for the 2024 Asian Games in Nagoya as well.
There are 22 months to prepare for and it will be defining. From the 2026 Asian Games to 2028 LA, there will be need for more detailing and to see how India can win quota places. Rather than crying over what Glasgow has done, Indian sports needs to stay positive. Blog Post 5 - Research of bridges in Hamilton and the Waikato River
Victoria Bridge
152m long road bridge was opened in 1910, connecting Hamilton East and West together. The bridge was constructed on a ferry crossing based in the colonial settlement. Victoria Bridge now stands in place of what was once a bridge made of timber in the 1870's called 'Union Bridge'. The bridge is a steel-arch road bridge which was an ambitious project due to its open spandrel arch of 104m, it was designed by international and national engineers and supervised by James Fulton. The construction of Victoria Bridge contributes to NZ history of transport and technology.

Built in 1937, a ferro-concrete structure of bowstring design. The bridge was named as a historic place in 1990 due to a conservation programme. It is nationally significant due to the concrete technology used to make the bowstring bridge. It is seen as a perfect example of a concrete bowstring bridge in New Zealand.
The Waikato River
Aotearoa/New Zealand's longest river, starting at Mount Ruapehu, travelling out to the Tasman Sea at Port Waikato. The river is mauri, a spiritual life force according to tangata whenua. The people from Tainui waka settled in the area of the river and it was the route that they traded and communicated. The river was used for its healing properties.
The river is 425km in length, 8 hydro electric dams are across the Waikato river, this area generates the most power in New Zealand.
For a single drop of water it takes several weeks for it to travel from Lake Taupo to Port Waikato, without dams the single drop of water would only take seven days. This is what inspired my project name.
