Blessed Are The Pure In Heart
Tumblr media
Victoria amazonica or Victoria Water Lily growing nicely in the tropics here. Photo credit: Eleanor Chua.
A native of South America, this giant water lily was so named in honour of Queen Victoria of England in 1837 who had ascended the throne that year. It was an era when many exotic plants, such as this water lily, were cultivated.

Reproductive System of Victoria Waterlilies
Victoria amazonia in botanical garden Victoria amazonica white flower Victoria amazonica pink flower Yesterday, we looked at the amazing design and structure of Victoria amazonica waterlilies. Named after Queen Victoria of England and the Amazon River where they grow, the huge leaves of these plants are amazing, and their flowers are beautiful. However, I think the most impressive is the…

Dolthruk
Tumblr media
Another one where I deliberately went in the opposite direction of the (suspected) Real Beast.
The pose is referenced from a giant river otter, while the colors, pointy face, and tail are from the water possum, and the giant armadillo provided the shell, ears, and feet. The water lily is based on Victoria amazonica, and the banana is for scale.
Close up for increased gel pen visiblity:

Fun water possum fact! They're only of the only known marsupials where both females and males have pouches :o so that's how my parent dolthruks trade who's incubating the little dolthruckings

Heya, Nari! How was your trip? See any cool plants while you were gone?
For the mod: Welcome back! Are you alright?
I found some Rafflesia Arnoldii, Ficus Virens, Victoria Amazonica.
There were many.

World’s largest water lily is a species of its own
An artist’s observations, two botanists’ suspicions, and DNA tests uncover a case of mistaken identity among giant water plants
When 19th century European botanists came across majestic water lilies with leaves bigger than a pingpong table, they first thought these South American plants constituted just one species.
Soon they realized the Victoria genus—named after the contemporaneous British monarch—comprised two species, V. amazonica and V. cruziana.
Now, researchers have discovered there are really three species, and a specimen of the newly indentified species, V. boliviana, growing in La Rinconada Gardens in Bolivia, holds the world record for leaf size at 3.2 meters across...

Small Beginnings
Tumblr media
An Amazon Water Lily pad having its small beginning in a small pond in the botanic gardens. Photo credit: Jonathan Chua.
This pad was probably only under a foot wide (about 30 cm). It could apparently grow up to 8 feet across but won't likely here as the pond was less than 10 feet wide.

11. favorite myth?
This is a native Brazilian myth I learned about in school when I was 8, and we performed a dance number inspired on it. Now, as an adult, I'm basing part of my worldbuilding for my fantasy novel on it.
A girl fell in love with the moon, and tried climbing to the highest places she could, trying to reach her. No matter how high she climbed, she could never get high enough.
One night, she climbed to the highest place she had dared to, and still couldn't reach the moon. She looked down, and saw the full moon reflected on a lake below, and she jumped.
The moon, who was actually a goddess, was touched, and transformed the girl into a flower that would float on the lake's surface -- that is the origin of the Victoria amazonica.
43. do you play any instruments?
Yes! I play the bass, ukulele, guitar, recorder, ocarina, and piano.
57. favorite movie?
It's hard to pick just one, but I'm going to go with Black Swan (2010).

Water Lily (Oni × Namora)
Cont. to Grief
This is the link to Grief
Tumblr media
Namora stared at the priestess as she sat beside her below the water's surface, hiding from the world while wearing her rebreather behind her veil.
She looked angelic as her lilac dress and veil swayed with the slow current.
Sitting in a comfortable silence.
It was peaceful sitting on the river floor.
Fish swam by.
River plants swayed.
Smooth stones sparkled in the sunlight that reached them.
The warrior only wished Oni could see how beautiful everything was when it rained.
The soft pitter patters that disturbed the surface, playing a soft lullaby for the world below.
Or even being in the presence of a waterfall.
Feeling the strength of the element she lived in made her feel powerful.
Her heart swelled at the thought of her swimming out to sea with her.
Gently pulling her through a kelp forest.
Showing her the grand reefs.
Swimming with animals.
Maybe showing her Talokan and watching her interact with the people of her world.
A small smile decorated her lips as she thought of things she wished to show the priestess.
"Namora."
"Mm?" She blinked, now realizing the priestess had been watching her just as intently.
"Your smile." She pointed out as her kimoyo beads translated. "It's like watching the first flower blossom in spring."
The warrior's face flushed at the compliment. "A flower?"
"Yeah." She nodded. "Have you ever seen a water lily before?"
She tilted her head before touching her chest. "Can you show me?"
The priestess swam forward and tapped her kimoyo beads until a hologram displayed an image of the flower. "They float on the water's surface and come in different colors." She pointed at the flower. "They remind me of your headdress, too."
Namora stared at the flower with soft eyes before looking up at the veiled woman.
"Do you like them?"
"Yes. I think they're beautiful."
Namora tilted her head as she looked at the flower. "Do they grow in Wakanda?"
"No. I've only seen them in movies, pictures, and books." She tapped her kimoyo beads a few times before an article appeared. "Most species of this plant originate from the eastern part of North America, but there is a larger one that can be found in parts of South America." A larger hologram appeared between them, revealing the plant. "It's called The Amazon water lily or Victoria amazonica."
"The flower is small."
"Yes. But look at how big the lily pads are."
Namora gave the hologram a second glance, eager to find what earned the plant the priestess' praise.
"I am not sure I understand your enthusiasm."
"They're massive. They could easily hold a toddler."
"It is this big?" Namora arched a brow.
"Yes." Oni showered her another image. "See."
"Hm."
Oni allowed her to look at it for a few minutes before deactivating the hologram.
"I've been meaning to ask..." Namora refocused on the floating priestess. "What does your name mean?"
"I was named after my cousin." She watched the priestess as she spoke. "His name is Namor to his enemies. It comes from a wicked surface dweller who harmed the surface dwelling descendants of our ancestors. They called him Un Niño Sin Amor. It means the boy without love. And from then on, he was called Namor."
"And you are, Namora."
"Yes. Una Niña Sin Amor."
Oni pondered the meaning before tilting her head.
"What about your family?"
"I do not know them. They gave me to the king in hopes of having their firstborn be of great service to the people."
"And you've never wanted to know them?"
"I will not disappoint them by looking for them. I will do as they wished."
"Are you happy?"
"I wouldn't wish to do anything else." Namora smiled. "Aj K'uk'ulkan raised me with Attuma. They are my family."
"Then you're not without love."
"I think you misunderstand my lack of love. I do not have love for the surface world."
"So you hate the surface world?"
"I do."
"And there's nothing good up there?"
"There is nothing good up there." She repeated in agreement.
The priestess allowed herself to sink so that she landed on the warrior's lap.
"I am from the surface world." Namora's eyes widened at her sudden invasion of space and leaned back. "Does that make me bad?"
The warrior shivered at the question.
Even though she could not see her face, she could only imagine her expression was somewhere between coy and smug.
"You are not bad."
"Then there are exceptions?"
"That does not mean I love the surface world."
Oni looked up that surface. "I think you'll learn to love the surface world with time."
"It is unlikely, but I may grow to love a few things."
"Am I one of those things?"
Namora stared up at her veiled face as she kept her veiled gaze on the world above.
"Yes."
Oni looked down at her.
Her veil not moving fast enough to cover her two-toned lips and a bit or her nose.
A genuine smile graced her lips for a moment before it faltered.
"Out of respect for you, I have to tell you that you'll never be able to get closer than we already are." Oni gently cupped her cheeks. "I have vows that I cannot break."
Namora stared for a moment before looking away out of respect.
"I understand."
"I should head back." Oni pulled back her hands and looked back up. "I'm sure Cebisa and the others are worried about me." She exhaled as she began to ascend.
Namora swam up and stopped when she was floating over the priestess like the rising sun.
"Will you see me tomorrow?"
"T-Tomorrow?"
"Yes."
"You want to see me tomorrow?"
Namora smiled at her surprise. "Yes, yuum k'iino'."
"But-"
"-If you have vows. I will not break them. However, I can still be your friend." Oni shivered as the warrior's face lowered until it was inches away. "Yes?"
"Yes."
"Then say yes. Come see me tomorrow."
"Where?"
"We can meet here tomorrow, whenever you're free."
"I'll be busy... so maybe a little before sunset."
Namora offered a small nod before moving back and holding out her hand.
Oni held out her hand hesitantly.
Namora smiled when her hand rested on hers. "I meant the rebreather, in lool." She squeezed her hand gently before letting go.
"In lool?" Oni tilted her head, noting how Griot struggled to translate nicknames.
"You'll have to figure it out." Namora smiled.
"Always making me learn." She deactivated her translator before laughing softly. "Two can play this game, in ba'ate'el."
Namora tilted her head in slight confusion when Griot didn't translate her words.
"Thanks for spending time with me. I pray Bast will let this become something more."
Oni lowered her head to remove the rebreather before holding it out.
The warrior gently took it and watched the priestess swim to the surface.
She swam up and poked her head out of the water to watch Oni look back and wave.
She offered a small wave back and watched her leave the leafy shore before slipping back below the surface.
The warrior began to swim away.
She was going to create a gift for the priestess and present it to her.
Something she could keep to herself and hide from the world.
It wasn't courting.
It was just... a friendship gift.
Or something.
Her face burned purple as she zoomed through the water to her destination.
