sua atenção então foi pras canecas, empurrando uma pra ele enquanto a outra acolhia em ambas das mãos dando uma bebericada sutil por ainda estar quente. "vou aceitar a camisa como pagamento pelo café então!" apenas presumiu. ele claramente não teria mais escolha. "a não ser que tenha uma recompensa melhor." e só então o sorriso lateral voltou aos lábios. yumi era ótima em deixar suas vontades bem claras e gostava que maverick sempre sabia como interpreta-las.

Film: Pavarotti in China, in 'Distant Harmony

LUCIANO PAVAROTTI and China make a formidable match in ''Distant Harmony,'' a cheerful documentary about the tenor's tour of the country in June 1986. The director, DeWitt Sage, had the playful notion of playing off Western grand opera against traditional Chinese music and, in the course of these 85 highly entertaining minutes, reconciling them. So beginning today at the Carnegie Hall Cinema, you can hear a version of ''O Sole Mio'' performed on Chinese instruments while residents of Beijing do their morning exercises on screen. Even more exotic, you can witness Mr. Pavarotti, hidden behind a marvel of a mask and a warrior's costume almost as colorful as the shirts he favors, take part in a Chinese operatic trio. This Western ear could detect no Italian accent.

Accompanying Mr. Pavarotti was the cast and crew of the Genoa Opera production of ''La Bohème.'' Pavarottian high notes from the opera set off big bursts of applause. There are also recital performances of such standards as ''Vesti la giubba'' and shots of the China that Mr. Pavarotti apparently saw on his visit. If you have a low tolerance for cute kids, you may feel as though you have walked in on an official travelogue. But Miroslav Ondricek's photography is vivid, and the youngsters are appealing, whether singing little songs or doing a chorus number to a rock beat; their displays of acrobatics and martial arts are startling.

Mr. Sage finds diverting ways of making the point that East and West can meet. There is Mr. Pavarotti bicycling rythmically along to the strains of ''La donna è mobile.'' (In a show of Chinese hospitality, the guest has the normally thronged thoroughfare pretty much to himself.) There he is coaching a local singer in the finer points of ''Musetta's Waltz.'' And there he is sharing Italian song and Chinese pasta (the ''first problem,'' one of the tour managers reports, is ''food for Pavarotti'') and then clapping exuberantly for a young Chinese cook who performs a delightful number in his own language.

If Mr. Pavarotti ever wears down, he does it off camera. (The complicated backstage preparations glimpsed here invite applause for the crew's energy, too.) Good will gets briefly out of hand, when in an interview the star expresses the belief that the Chinese people have achieved freedom, possibly drawing that optimistic assessment from the fact that they are free to applaud him.

The climax comes with Mr. Pavarotti, glistening white handkerchief unfurled, treating an audience of 10,000 at Beijing's Great Hall of the People to ''Come Back to Sorrento.'' To judge by the response, old Sorrento can keep the pot on as high a boil in the East as it long has in the West. One of the singer's hosts points out that 100 or 200 million Chinese might have watched ''La Bohème'' on television, and asks, ''Since the whole world likes these operas, why should we not like them?'' Well, there may be reasons, but on the evidence of ''Distant Harmony,'' if anybody can do away with culture clash, Luciano Pavarotti is the man.
