The i300 drives up to 100 km/h and has a range of 60 km - special features include the deep battery position and the removable batteries There are now many electric scooters, but few have such a futuristic look as the i300 from the British startup company Zapp. A Carbon Launch Edition will be launched to mark the start of the new model. The Zapp i300 was introduced last summer. One of the special features is the free-floating seat. The construction is made possible by an exoskeleton that carries the seat and the rear wheel fork. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="620"] Zapp i300 Electric Scooter (2023) Zoom[/caption]   In addition, the battery, which weighs only six kilos, can be easily removed and charged in the apartment. The battery should be able to charge from 20 to 80 percent in 40 minutes. The battery is under the floor. Firstly, this lowers the center of gravity and secondly, the space under the seat can be used for a luggage compartment. Two such batteries are supplied with the scooter. The total storage capacity is 1.44 kWh, which should be enough for 60 km. The permanent magnet synchronous motor (PSM) has a peak power of 14 kW. The power is transmitted to the rear wheel via a carbon belt. This means that the sprint to 50 km/h takes about 2.3 seconds, and acceleration to the top speed of 100 km/h takes 5.0 seconds. As competitors, Zapp names the Vespa Elettrica (report at Motor1), the BMW CE 04, the Gogoro Supersports, the Niu NQiGT/S, the LiveWire DelMar and the Silence SO2. According to a table by Zapp, these rivals all take longer to sprint. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="620"] Zapp i300 Electric Scooter (2023) Zoom[/caption] The i300 Carbon Launch Edition features carbon fenders, diamond cut wheels, a red rear spring and a plaque with the company founder's signature. Only 1,000 copies will be built. According to the Zapp website, the price is 9,490 euros. The cheapest model in the series, the i300 Ocean, is said to be available for 6,900 euros. You can now already configure and reserve the i300. A first Zapp branch was also opened in Paris; more are to follow. There you can find out more about the i300 from Zapp experts, test it and order it. Alternatively, you can order the scooter on the website. The i300 is to be delivered directly to the customer's front door, by van. Maintenance is to be carried out in a similar way in a workshop vehicle. Zapp is targeting France, Italy and Spain as the first markets, but you can also reserve the scooter in Germany. The investor report says "We are SOP ready", so you are ready for series production. For production, Zapp cooperates with the Thai company Summit Auto Group (company website). A pilot production started already in 2022; the scooter is made by hand by 14 workers. For the current year, Zapp states a production capacity of 10,000 pieces, in 2024 this should increase to 100,000 pieces and then year after year to 200,000 and 300,000 pieces. For the future, Zapp is planning cheaper and less sporty models, including an i125 with 7 kW drive power and an i100 with 4 kW, which should be available from 4,500 euros. Apparently, what keeps Zapp from serial production is money. In order to raise capital, Zapp appears to be planning to merge with a publicly traded shell company called CIIG Capital Partners II. That company appears to have $294 million in cash on hand. 274 million of which will probably go to Zapp. This should make it possible to start series production. The merger is expected to be completed in the first half of 2023.

We all love our 2-strokes – but they’re not the most environmentally friendly of machines. Many people think the future of transportation is electric. With the likes of VW, BMW and even Jaguar joining Tesla in bringing electric vehicles to market, is the writing on the wall for fossil fuels? After all – when even Milan – the home of the Lambretta – bans classic scooters – you have to start taking…

Piaggio, Honda, KTM and Yamaha form consortium for replaceable batteries
Honda Motor, KTM, Piaggio Group and Yamaha Motor join forces to promote replaceable batteries for electric vehicles.
Subscribe to our Telegram channel for instant updates!
Piaggio Group (PIA.MI), Honda Motor Co., Ltd, KTM F&E GmbH and Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd have officially signed the agreement to form the Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium (SBMC). This will take place after the letter of intent has been signed on March 1st.
As big names in the motorcycle industry, the Top 4 have expressed their commitment to promoting the widespread use of light electric vehicles in the transportation sector. These include mopeds, scooters, motorcycles, tricycles, and four-wheelers. This is on the way to a more sustainable life cycle management of batteries in the context of international climate policy. The founding members of the consortium believe that the availability of a jointly developed replaceable battery system is the key to the development of low-voltage electric mobility.
“Urban mobility is in a delicate phase of transition to electrification. Thanks to our consortium, which represents four major global players, motorcycles will continue to play a key role in the urban context. Replaceable batteries give the right answer to reduce vehicle charging time and provide users with an additional valuable choice. Urban mobility is part of Piaggio’s DNA and history: our aim is to bring all of our technological know-how and our approach to innovation to the consortium. ”- Michele Colaninno, Head of Strategy and Product, Piaggio Group
Piaggio Vespa Elettrica
The main goal of the consortium is to find solutions to customers’ concerns about the future of electric mobility. This includes the range, the charging time and infrastructure as well as the costs. The consortium sets four main objectives to support the process to achieve this:
Development of common technical specifications of the exchangeable battery systems
Confirm the general use of the battery systems
Make and promote the common specifications of the consortium as a standard in European and international standardization bodies
Extend the use of the consortium’s common specification to a global level
The members of the consortium will work closely with interested actors and national, European and international standardization bodies in the creation of international technical standards. The availability of charging stations varies from country to country and there is limited information available to end users. Therefore, PIAGGIO, HONDA, KTM and YAMAHA aim with this consortium to involve the decision-makers for the development and use of charging infrastructures in order to promote the increase in light electric vehicles.
“Honda believes the widespread adoption of electric motorcycles can play an important role in creating a more sustainable society. To do this, we have to solve several challenges such as extending the range, shortening the charging time and reducing vehicle and infrastructure costs in order to increase the convenience for customers. In the consortium we have created, founding members from the motorcycle industry and other stakeholders will work together to standardize replaceable batteries, their charging systems, and the surrounding infrastructure to create the environment for their use. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that motorcycles continue to be chosen as a useful means of getting around in the mobility of the future. ”- Yoshishige Nomura, Chief Officer, Motorcycle Operations, Honda Motor Co., Ltd.
The four founding members encourage all interested stakeholders to join the cooperation in order to enrich the expertise of the consortium in order to ensure a wide spread of replaceable standard batteries in the future.
Those interested in joining the SBMC can contact one of the founding members for more information.
“The signing of this consortium agreement is an important step to ensure that PIERER Mobility AG can make further progress, deliver innovations quickly and advance its clear strategic vision for electrically powered two-wheelers. Together with our partners, we will work on the delivery of an interchangeable battery system for low-voltage vehicles (48V) with an output of up to 11kW based on international technical standards. We are very much looking forward to the fact that motorized two-wheelers will continue to play their role in the future of urban and extra-urban mobility. ”- Stefan Pierer, CEO PIERER Mobility AG
There is no doubt that this will be a game changer in the electric motorcycle industry.
“The Swapable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium in Europe is finally ready to start work. I hope that this first step forward will be a beacon that will attract like-minded parties to our mission and lead to transformative change for the future. At Yamaha Motor, we are confident that, through this initiative, we can help harmonize the various technical specifications and standards and help maximize the benefits of electric power for customers around the world. ”- Takuya Kinoshita, Senior Executive Officer, Chief General Manager of Land Mobility Business Operations, Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd.

Piaggio India is looking at developing a made-for-India Vespa electric scooter which is likely to be based on the Vespa Elettrica offered in Europe. The new electric scooter will likely share some design aspects and features with the Vespa Elettrica, but it will be designed keeping in mind the Indian electric two-wheeler market requirements and consumer profile. Speaking to Carandbike, Piaggio India CEO and Managing Director Diego Graffi said that the Italian brand's first electric scooter will be a Vespa, and not Aprilia. "The electric scooter will be designed in Italy, but we have to finalise the final product specifications keeping in mind the requirements and sensibilities of the Indian market. It will take some time, but it will come. The new electric scooter will be a Vespa, and we are working towards finalising the details of the product," Graffi told Carandbike during an interaction at the Auto Expo 2020. Vespa’s first electric scooter is coming in 2018 with 62 miles of range
Four hours of charging from a “normal wall outlet” will bring the batteries back up to full, according to Piaggio. On the more technological side, the Vespa Elettrica has a 4.3-inch TFT color display between the handlebars that shows information like speed and range and charge level. A Vespa Elettrica app will allow users to connect to the scooter over Bluetooth so that the scooter can serve up messages and incoming phone calls. The app will also be able to relay diagnostic information about the scooter, as well as locate it on a map.
Piaggio says the Elettrica should have “superior performance” but even if that’s true — which is possible considering the jolting acceleration you typically get with electric motors — it will come at the cost of range.

VESPA ‘ELECTRIC’ - FUCK THAT
Our homework task was to rename the Vespa Elettrica in 3 ways - One for men, one for women, one that’s unisex. The begin research for this, I looked at Vespa itself - it’s current ranges and it’s history. Vespa has always named it’s scooters something Italian, and I wanted to try and keep with that as much as possible, at least in the aesthetic of the word, as this seemed like an important part of their branding and identity. They pride themselves on being free and being for speed, boasting about their racing ties.
Tumblr media
I then split up by demographic, looking at why men AREN’T buying Vespa’s, and why women ARE buying vespas, as it seems as though their main demographic of buyers is women - so what isn’t appealing to men? I found a website that’s dedicated to all things manly  (hyperlinked for your viewing pleasure) and telling men what’s manly, helping them to protect their maniliness (yes, websites like these actually exist) - on this site, it had an entire article dictating why men are not attracted to Vespa’s, and mostly, it’s because they’re feminine in both appearance and sound. Yes, sound. That is apparently a bit thing for guys. Sound. Vespa’s don’t make that sexy and ‘I’ve got a massive schlong’ vroom vroom that a motorcycle does.
Women on the other hand are attracted to Vespa’s on account of the idea of the perfect, idyllic Italian summer thats romanticised in movies. They want the scooter through the cobbled streets with a scarf around their head, and they want the sexy Italian man that sweeps them off their feet in a steamy romance. They want the adventure, the fantasy.
WOMEN:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CREATIVE RATIONALE:
Capturing the sound of Italy, whilst promising an immersion in life. Using the newfound soundlessness of the Vespa to give women the fantasy of plunging into life and living through their surroundings in an ethereal, escapist way.
MEN:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CREATIVE RATIONALE:
Challenging the perception of loud = big, and inverting the need for sound as compensation to make it so that men feel threatened by loud engines, as if it outs them as making up for what they don’t have. Promoting silence as confidence.
UNISEX:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
CREATIVE RATIONALE:
A feeling you can’t describe, a feeling you have to experience for yourself - highlighting Vespa as the vehicle that lets you live the journey, not just take it, and bringing silence into the forefront by painting sound as the wall that blocks us from seeing the small wonders of every day life.
FEEDBACK - INDIVIDUAL AND CLASS:
My feedback was that the line for the women’s vespa - ‘For those quiet nights out’ - is not really a tagline for the brand, or this scooter, but rather it’s the tagline for a campaign, or the idea for a campaign. It’s good, just not for what I was using it for.
