@knowseverythingaboutyou sent: "You sound like an artist" Daredevil Sentence Starters | Accepting
By design, it is late in the day when Namor enters the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Talokanil planned it as such, to better avoid any lingering second glances from overworked security guards or harried museum curators. He's here specifically to see the museum's latest exhibit on Maya Art and Divinity, which features some rare artifacts predating even his mother's people. The stelae and artwork tells the stories of who K'uk'ulkan would become -- both the God and the Man.
Namor loathes that such connections to his Peoples' spiritual origins are kept in colonizer institutions, but he has learned to play the long game, regarding certain... reparations.
K'uk'ulkan is immersed in his thoughts, peripherally aware of the people still milling around him, most of which are utterly unaware of his presence in the way only truly distracted surface-dwellers can manage. The Heavy boots hiding his ankles and knit beanie covering his pointed ears are both stifling, while the absences of his nose and ear adornments leaves the leader feeling strangely naked. He murmurs translations to himself as he scans the hieroglyphs carved into massive stone monuments, but falls silent at the words spoken from his left.
Turning, Namor regards the woman, his expression shuttered. There is something about her that makes a current of awareness pass beneath the Talokanil's skin.
"...Do I?" He asks at last,  mouth tilting ruefully. "Is it because I appreciate the mastery of Maya Artists? Or because I am muttering to myself in an art museum?"

Through the Bible with Les Feldick LESSON 1 * PART 4 * BOOK 73 THEOPHANIES:  GOD THE SON APPEARING IN HUMAN FORM - 4 Genesis 17:1 and Various Other Scriptures Again, I want to thank all you folks for coming in and making this possible. For those of you out in television, again we never want to forget to thank you for everything.  Your loyalty and your faithfulness—how we appreciate that. All right, we’re going to keep right on going on the Theophanies today.  I think we can finish up most of them. We’re going to jump back to where we left off in Genesis chapter 26 with Isaac.  And the reason I’m using this is because again the word is used that the Lord “appeared” to him. Genesis 26:2a “The LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt;” Plain language?  Can’t get any plainer, can it?  Go not down into Egypt. All right, now here’s where people get curves thrown at them. They say, “Well, the Scripture contradicts itself.”  Well, on the surface maybe it does. But God changes His program from time to time.  Now come back with me just for comparison sake to chapter 46, where God doesn’t give us a theophany.  He, in a vision, speaks to Jacob.  Now this is interesting. On the one hand, face-to-face with Isaac, He says don’t you go down into Egypt.  You stay back here in Canaan, and I’ll take care of you.  But now 100 years later look at the difference.  Genesis chapter 46 and we’ll start at verse 1, just for comparison sake. Genesis 46:1 “And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac.”  This is all down in what today is called the Negev.  This is that area south of Jerusalem, south even of Hebron, which is due east of Egypt. Genesis 46:2-3 “And God spake unto Israel (that is Jacob) in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob.  And he said, Here am I.  (Now watch verse 3.) 3. And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; (For what reason?) for I will there (in Egypt) make of thee a great nation:” Opposite directions?  Just as opposite as you can get.  On the one hand Isaac is told you stay here in Canaan.  Don’t even think about going down into Egypt, because Egypt was the world.  That’s where later on the nation in general got in trouble. Because if they heard of a Babylonian invasion, who would they run to for help?  Well, the Egyptians.  If they thought the Egyptians were invading, who would they run to for help?  The Syrians.  And God said you don’t need outside help.  You rely on Me.  But now here God has the whole plan of the establishment of the Nation of Israel.  While they were under slavery in Egypt is when they really became a Nation. So, if it ever comes up in your Sunday school class or a discussion about where did the Nation of Israel really come together – it’s while they were in Egypt.  And then when the Nation is now well on its way, all the tribes are established.  Then God raises up Moses.  He sends Moses in to bring the Children of Israel out of Egypt. If you noticed in the programs lately, I made the point that when they came out of Egypt did they come out like a bunch of ragtag know-nothings?  No.  They were what.  Organized.  Every tribe had its own banner, its own standard.  And when they encamped, it was always in the same order—Judah to the east, and then three tribes and three tribes and so forth.  But just for the sake of comparison now, yes, God told Isaac go NOT down into Egypt. Then He turns around and He tells Jacob to fear not, because after all food was down there; Joseph was down there. And God knows that the Nation will begin to appear under slavery in Egypt. All right, now then, if we can come back to chapter 26 for a little bit.  Reading on in verse 3 the instructions to Isaac are: Genesis 26:3 “Sojourn (or remain) in this land, (That is the land of Canaan, up there between the Mediterranean and the Jordan.) and I will be with thee, and I will bless thee; for
unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I swear unto Abraham thy father:” Now to me, the very fact that He’s standing there before Isaac as one man to another, this makes it all the more believable than if it would have been a vision or if it would have been a prophet.  This is from God Himself.  He means what He says.  It’s going to happen.  And it did, see?  Exactly as God has promised here to Isaac, the Nation of Israel received those covenant promises, and they began to grow in numbers and in occupying the land of promise. All right, now you go on through these succeeding verses.  We won’t take time to read all of them, but come all the way down to verse 23.  Of course, in the meantime he’s had that run-in with Abimelech over his beautiful wife Rebecca.  Much like Abraham and Sarah.  And again God spared the King Abimelech for not having touched Rebecca.  But then, of course, they more or less got booted out of the country.  So verse 17, if you want to stop there a moment. Genesis 26:17 “And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.”  He’s still in the border area.  He’s not removing too far.   But come down to verse 23. Genesis 26:23-25 “And he went up from thence (Gerar) to Beersheba. (Now like I said, Beersheba is further inland from the border of Egypt.) 24. And the Lord (What?) appeared (In a theophany, in human form once again) unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham’s sake. 25 And he built an altar there, and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac’s servants digged a well.” So Isaac then becomes more obedient, and things begin to move on.  They have Jacob and Esau, and then we have the account of Jacob’s getting the blessing some 37 years later.  He gets the birthright first, and then 37 years later he gets the blessing.  So 20 years have gone by.  Now jump up to Genesis chapter 32.  This will be the last real theophany of God the Son appearing in human form to one of the patriarchs.  If we’ve got time yet this afternoon, we could go on into Ezekiel and Daniel where God appears to them in a theophany, but in a vision experience.  Not literal man-to-man like we have here. All right, in chapter 32, if you remember the story of Jacob and how his family is growing up there, working for his Uncle Laban up in Syria.  Remember he’s up there in Syria because he had to flee for his life, because Esau is mad at him for having stolen the blessing.  And at the same time it fulfilled a statement that Rebecca made when she told Jacob to flee.  She didn’t want to have Esau kill him, and she loses both her boys at one time.  So she made a vow and helped Jacob to escape.  But one of the sad things of Scripture is Rebecca never again saw Jacob in this life.  Those are what I call tragedies in Scripture.  Jacob had more than one. All right, as you come into chapter 32, Jacob is now coming back from his sojourn up with Laban.  He’s established his flocks and herds, but he’s still scared to death, as I put it, of Esau.  What is going to happen when he meets Esau?  So he sets apart a great number of livestock to pacify him, bribe him, or whatever.  He’s going to send that ahead.  Then he’s going to put all of his family and his flocks and his herds across the River Jabbok.  Now, we’ll pick it up in verse 19. Genesis 32:19-21 “And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, (of animals) saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when you find him.  (Tell him that these are all his.  They’re my present, if we can just have peace between each other.) 20. And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us.  For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept me.
21. So went the present (Or the bribe, whatever you want to call it.) over before him: and he himself lodged that night in the company.” In other words, he’s going to be surrounded by all of his other wives and children and so forth. Genesis 32:22.a “And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two women servants, and his eleven sons,…” Now remember, little Benjamin hasn’t been born yet.  That’s going to be another several years later.  So, he’s got eleven sons. Genesis 32:22b-24a “…and he passed over the ford Jabbok. (or the little River Jabbok.  And it’s a beautiful, beautiful, scenic area) 23. And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.  24. And Jacob was left alone;…”  Now, that’s the part you’ve got to get down first.  He’s all by himself in the dead of night. Genesis 32:24a “…and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.”  Now some may try to water that down, that it was just an imagination or it was a dream.  But I don’t buy that.  I think it was a literal knockdown wrestling match.  And these two men went at it for a good portion of the night. Genesis 32:24b-25 “…until the breaking of the day.”  And that’s what it says. “And there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. 25. And when he (Jacob) saw that he prevailed not against him, he (the stranger) touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint as he wrestled with him.”  In other words, he crippled him. Genesis 32:26 “And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he (Jacob) said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.”  What does that tell you?  What does Jacob now know?  That this is a theophany.  He now knows that this is another appearance of God the Son.  Now I’ll show you it from Scripture definitely, but nevertheless, we have to make the assumption that when Jacob demands to be blessed, he knows who he’s been wrestling with. Genesis 32:27-28 “And he (The LORD in this theophany, in this appearance in human form.) said unto him, What is thy name?  And he said, Jacob. 28. And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.”   Now, if you know anything about Scripture, what was the meaning of the word Jacob in the Hebrew language?  The deceiver.  The supplanter.  And that’s what his life was comprised of all the way along.  He was constantly taking advantage of one person or another, and that’s why Laban finally got after him. But after this experience, Jacob was never like that again.  Never.  It’s a good example of a new birth when a person becomes a true believer, a child of God, and these people experienced that.  Don’t think for a minute that they didn’t have an experience of a new lifestyle.  They became men of faith.  Oh, they still failed.  But they were basically born from above believers.  Jacob is the prime example of someone who has a complete change of lifestyle as a result of their faith.  Verse 28 again. Genesis 32:28-29 “And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.   29. And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name.   And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name?  And he blessed him there.”   That’s always uppermost on the ancient’s thinking.  And the reason was that every pagan society had gods and goddesses, and they were all named.  My, if you want to get an interesting read, just read a little bit of mythology.  It’s enough to turn your stomach, but on the other hand it gives you an idea of what these people were up against.  I mean it’s just unbelievable what the multitude of people have been believing over the centuries.  But it shows you over and over what the Lord meant when He said, “Broad is the way that leadeth to destruction and many go in thereat.  But narrow is the way and straight is the gate and (How many?) few there be that find it.
”  It’s always been that way, beloved, and it still is today. All right, now moving on with Jacob, he asked for His name in verse 29. “…And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name?  (What’s that to you?)  And he blessed him there.”  That’s the thing that mattered.  All right, Jacob understood the blessing.  I don’t know what it was, but now verse 30. Genesis 32:30a “And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God (How?) face to face, and my life is preserved.”  Now, that’s just exactly what we’ve been seeing all afternoon.  Adam and Eve did.  Hagar did.  Abraham did.  Isaac did.  And now Jacob, they see God face-to-face, but only in a temporary human form that goes back up to the invisible Godhead.  Whereas when Christ becomes flesh in Bethlehem, we no longer need a theophany.  We no longer need a temporary appearance, but rather we now believe in the One who is flesh and blood and bone, and once He resurrects from the dead, He is still flesh and bone.  All right, so the part I want you to remember is verse 30. Genesis 32:30b-31 “…I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. 31. And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted (or limped) upon his thigh.”  He was a marked man, of course, until the day he died. All right, now in the few minutes we have left, that’s the end of the literal Theophanies that I can find back here in the Old Testament account, we have to go all the way up to Ezekiel.  Ezekiel and Daniel both see God but in a vision form of a human being.  Ezekiel and I want chapter 40 verse 3.  We won’t have time to cover all these verses, but you can read them in your spare time.  But nevertheless, we know that here we have again the appearance of God the Son to the prophet Ezekiel while he’s out there during the Babylonian captivity, out there in the area of present day Persian Gulf.  Let’s start at verse 1 so we get the full flow of it. Ezekiel 40:1-2a “In the five and twentieth year of our captivity, (Which totals 70 remember?  This is the 70-year captivity down in Babylon.)  in the beginning of the year, in the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after that the city was smitten, in the selfsame day the hand of the LORD was upon me, and brought me thither.  2. In the visions…”  Now we’ve got to realize we’re not confronting man-to-man like in the past, now we’re in a vision experience. Ezekiel 40:2-4a “In the visions of God he brought me into the land of Israel, and set me upon a very high mountain, by which was as the frame of a city on the south.  3. And he brought me thither, and, behold, there was a (What?) man, whose appearance was like the appearance of brass, with a line of flax in his hand, and a measuring reed; and he stood in the gate.  4. And the man said unto me,…”  So, we know now that we have another appearance of God the Son, but it’s in a vision experience rather than a literal face-to-face. Ezekiel 40:4a “And the man said unto me, Son of man, behold with thine eyes, and hear with thine ears, and set thine heart upon all that I shall show thee; for to the intent that I might show them unto thee art thou brought hither:…” In other words, God has a distinct purpose in bringing Ezekiel all the way up to this mountaintop.  But only in a vision, his body is still back there in Babylon. Ezekiel 40:4b “…declare all that thou seest to the house of Israel.”  Now, beginning at verse 5 all the way to end of the Book of Ezekiel, God the Son, in this vision experience, is explaining to Ezekiel this glorious temple that’s going to come on the Nation of Israel there in Jerusalem during the thousand year reign.    I can just hit bits and pieces of it.  Come all the way up to chapter 44, if you will, verse 4.  This gives us a little glimpse of the millennial temple that will be established on the planet while Christ is ruling and reigning those thousand years. Ezekiel 44:4 “Then he brought me the way of the north gate before the house: and
I looked, and, behold, the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD: and I fell upon my face.”  Can you imagine what’s that’s going to be like?  When the glory of God will come in and just literally fill that millennial temple? The result of it was that Ezekiel, even in the vision, had to fall on his face.  And, oh again, this is everything pertaining to the glory that’s awaiting us, and we can take heart that it is coming. Well, let’s see.  I just want to hit a few of these.  Come to Chapter 47, this is all part of this same vision being described by God the Son in this vision experience with Ezekiel.  You just follow the pronoun all the way through. This comes from the lips of this same person, the man who we know is God the Son. Ezekiel 47:1a “Afterward he brought me again unto the door of the house; and, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward:…” Now we’re talking about Jerusalem.  And if you understand geography, Jerusalem sits up there on the hills and down 1100-1200 feet to the west is the Mediterranean and down 2500-2600 feet to the Dead Sea.  All right, this river is going to flow both directions from underneath this glorious millennial temple in Jerusalem.  If that can help you picture it in your mind, this glorious river of supernatural water is going to flow both directions. Ezekiel 47:1b-2 “…and the waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward: for the forefront of the house stood toward the east, and the waters came down from under the right side of the house, at the south side of the altar. 2. Then he brought me out of the way of the gate northward, and led me about the way without unto the utter gate by the way that looketh eastward; (toward the Dead Sea) and, behold, there ran out waters on the right side.  Ezekiel 47:3-4a “And when the man (Here it is again.  This is God the Son.) that had the line in his hand went forth eastward, he measured a thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the waters were to the ankles.  4. Again he measured a thousand, and brought me through the waters; the waters were to the knees.” That sounds like preachers about the flood, doesn’t it?  But this isn’t.  This is the flow of the water coming out of this temple complex. Ezekiel 47:5-6 “Afterward he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not pass over:  for the waters were risen, waters to swim in, a river that could not be passed over. 6. And he said, unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen this? Then he brought me, and caused me to return to the brink of the river.” Ezekiel 47:7a “Now when I had returned, behold, at the bank of the river were very many trees on the one side and on the other. 8. Then he said unto me, These waters issue out toward the east country,…” Now, that’s desert today.  That’s down through the mountains leading down to Jericho and the Dead Sea. Ezekiel 47:8b-9 “…and go down into the desert, and go into the sea: (into the Dead Sea) which being brought forth into the sea, (The Dead Sea, which today won’t even give life to a shelled-fish, to a mollusk or anything.  Nothing lives in the Dead Sea.) the waters shall be healed. 9. And it shall come to pass, that everything that liveth, which moveth, whithersoever the river shall come, shall live: (It’s going to be a literal river of life.)   and there shall be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters shall come thither: for they shall be healed; (In other words, they’ll lose all their minerals and all their saltiness, and it’ll become a glorious fresh water sea.) and everything shall live wherever the river cometh.” Now verse 10, for those of you who have been there, you’ll know exactly what this is talking about.  There are a bunch of hotels and a park now in what is called here En-gedi. Ezekiel 47:10-12 “And it shall come to pass, that the fishers shall stand upon it from En-gedi even unto En-eglaim; they shall be a place to spread forth nets; their fish shall be according to their kinds, as the fish of the great sea, exceeding many.
11. But the miry places thereof and the marshes thereof shall not be healed; they shall be given to salt. 12. And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and that side, shall grow all trees for food, (That’d be the dates and the figs and you name it.) whose leaf shall not fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.” Here we have, from the Lord Himself, the description of this glorious Kingdom, whatever you want to call it.  It starts with the sanctuary, the temple, but it will affect everything wherever the Lord will have His control.  So it’s nothing to scoff at.  It’s coming.  It’s going to happen.  And everything we see coming in the Middle East is going to bring it about. In fact, I like to ask the doubters once in a while; do you ever stop to think why all the oil is in the Middle East?  Was that an accident?  Well, of course not.  All of these things should prompt us to realize that everything is coming according to God’s plan.

41. Parsha Pinchas. "The Oracle." From Numbers 25:10-30:1.
Pinchas AKA Phineas means "the brass mouth".
Tumblr media
*Brass* is the most reflective surface mentioned in the Torah, one in which man can face himself. The mouth that speaks the truth is pinchas, the brass mouth one we want to listen to because it bring salvation to the self.
Recall from Parsha Balak, to whom to listen was an issue:
In the middle of the Big Sojourn from Egypt, after Moses told the Column of Israel it was time to visualize the future, a civilization called Canaan, a place of vineyards, orchards and plenty to go around, the people refuse, and are besieged by strife.
The Spear of Government enters the picture and forces the issue. Civilization and the Fruits of its Actions, yes, strife and "talkers" no. God's anger at the Israelites over their lack of conviction about this mounts but resolves itself as this Parsha begins:
The Lord said to Moses,
11 “Phinehas "the oracle" son of Eleazar "God has helped", the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites. Since he was as zealous for my honor among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. 12 Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace with him. 13 He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood, because he was zealous for the honor of his God and made atonement for the Israelites.”
14 The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri "musician, song of Yah" son of Salu "maker of highways" , the leader of a Simeonite "law abiding" family. 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi "a liar" daughter of Zur, "rock" a tribal chief of a Midianite "cavilers" family.
16 The Lord said to Moses, 17 “Treat the Midianites as enemies and kill them. 18 They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor "dirty hole" incident involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of that incident.”
-> When you have intercourse in the dirty hole with lying bitch and make a crying, shitty baby, God, He getteth angry.
Ears get dirty too...the liar, the daughter of a complainer, sullied the ears of a song maker, an Israelite and both were cast out. No sing along songs with lies in their verses, please.
The Oracle showed up and explained how killing liars and the lying cunts they schcrew with is essential if the future is to be born pristine, a reflection of the past from which it came.
The Second Census
26 After the plague the Lord said to Moses and Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, 2 “Take a census of the whole Israelite community by families—all those twenty years old or more who are able to serve in the army of Israel.” 3 So on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho, Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them and said, 4 “Take a census of the men twenty years old or more, as the Lord commanded Moses.”
-> I think these are the Traits associated with the First Two Commandments and or the first Two Days. The Rabbi from the Chabad.org essay says 20 years of age are the minimum for the Age of Reason, and this corresponds with both, but read the actual definitions before drawing conclusions:
These were the Israelites who came out of Egypt:
5 The descendants of Reuben the Leader, the firstborn son of Israel, were:
through Hanok, "inauguration."  the Hanokite clan;
through Pallu, "distinguished."  the Palluite clan;
6 through Hezron, "village" the Hezronite clan;
through Karmi, "the vineyard." the Karmite clan.
7 These were the clans of Reuben; those numbered were 43,730.
There are 12 Second Generations of Israel, according to the Torah and 12 more Root Tantras associated with the end of the Sojourn into Canaan:
"Distinguished leaders alone should be inaugurated. Those that cluster men together in villages like grapes in the vineyard by telling the truth. They exalt God the Most High and follow the Decrees [instead of worshipping liars as if they were gods.] "
8 The son of Pallu "distinguished" was Eliab "God is my father", 9 and the sons of Eliab were Nemuel* "God is with us", Dathan "decree, or a well" and Abiram "father of loftiness" .
The same Dathan and Abiram were the community officials who rebelled against Moses and Aaron and were among Korah’s followers when they rebelled against the Lord. 10 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them along with Korah "to make bald, to mark", whose followers died when the fire devoured the 250 men. And they served as a warning sign. 11 The line of Korah, however, did not die out.
->The earth swallowing the rebels means time passed and left bodies in its wake, but history, unchanged, went on to become an era, one that did not look promising because of strife so the government used "a spear" and cut it off in it tracks.
What happens in an era must be clearly ascertained at all times, sans religion, politics, any kind of dogma. Should strife surface, any kind of proposed agitation from within politics or the polity, the government, so the Torah says needs to resort to its Principals and shut it down at once.
Rebellious Community Officials, the Torah says, are not to be tolerated.

This belief pays dividends to everyone."
51 The total number of the men of Israel was 601,730.
52 The Lord said to Moses, 53 “The land is to be allotted to them as an inheritance based on the number of names. 54 To a larger group give a larger inheritance, and to a smaller group a smaller one; each is to receive its inheritance according to the number of those listed.
55 Be sure that the land is distributed by lot. What each group inherits will be according to the names for its ancestral tribe. 56 Each inheritance is to be distributed by lot among the larger and smaller groups.”

(Kohath "to obey" was the forefather of Amram "enthralled"; 59 the name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed "Yah is impressive", a descendant of Levi, who was born to the Levites[e] in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses and their sister Miriam. 60 Aaron was the father of Nadab "to donate" and Abihu "Father's house" Eleazar "God is my help" and Ithamar "palm tree coast". 61 But Nadab and Abihu died when they made an offering before the Lord with unauthorized fire.)
="Enthrallment with all Yah has made should inspire obedience. To be enamored of creation and its provisions is the remedy to slavery to want, to the god of Egypt"
62 All the male Levites a month old or more numbered 23,000. They were not counted along with the other Israelites because they received no inheritance among them.
=Men good, women bad.
63 These are the ones counted by Moses and Eleazar the priest when they counted the Israelites on the plains of Moab "strife" by the Jordan "the descendant" across from Jericho "fragrant place". 64 Not one of them was among those counted by Moses and Aaron the priest when they counted the Israelites in the Desert of Sinai "I brought you to me". 65 For the Lord had told those Israelites they would surely die in the wilderness, and not one of them was left except Caleb "faithful" son of Jephunneh "Beholds" and Joshua " deliverer" son of Nun "faith".
="To behold God, the source of all happiness, is all the help one needs."
Zelophehad’s Daughters
27 The daughters of Zelophehad "ruptures fear" son of Hepher "dig, shame", the son of Gilead "testimony stones" , the son of Makir "to know", the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. Whose daughters names were Mahlah "disease" , Noah "respite, from violence", Hoglah "partridge", Milkah "queen of counsel" and Tirzah "Goodwill"
= "The Ephod, the imprint of the Principals upon the current generation by those of the past ruptures fear and digs out the shame, reveals it and allows us to put it behind us. The call of goodwill ends the diseases, provides respite from violence."
They came forward 2 and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the whole assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting and said, 3 “Our father died in the wilderness. He was not among Korah’s "bald, frosty, without intelligence" followers, who banded together against the Lord, but he died for his own sin and left no sons. 4 Why should our father’s name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father’s relatives.”
5 So Moses brought their case before the Lord, 6 and the Lord said to him, 7 “What Zelophehad’s daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father’s relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them.
="You may not leave a land that is war torn and in a state of upheaval to future generations to figure out."
8 “Say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. 9 If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. 11 If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to have the force of law for the Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.’”
=see my notes below on how to interpret the Offerings.
Joshua to Succeed Moses
12 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain in the Abarim "across the Jordan" Range and see the land I have given the Israelites. 13 After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was, 14 for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin "thorns, dry place", both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy before their eyes.” (These were the waters of Meribah Kadesh "Holy place of strife, in the Desert of Zin.)
=We must leave whatever it is that causes strife on our world behind. We have to "cross the Jordan" into Canaan, an era where the Principals named in the Censes rule the land.
This is not an option. We are indentured to this by the Maker of Heaven and Earth, their Owner and Supreme Governor.
15 Moses said to the Lord,
16 “May the Lord, the God who gives breath to all living things, appoint someone over this community 17 to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.”
18 So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit of leadership,[f] and lay your hand on him. 19 Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence. 20 Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him. 21 He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Urim "the Fire" before the Lord. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in.”
22 Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. 23 Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the Lord instructed through Moses.
Daily Offerings
Epahs are "glooms" or sins that are diametrically opposite the Commandments. All sin comes from sins against the First Commandment. The following says if you offer a hin "a little Grace" in response to an ephah, things turn out all right.
Food = what you read, study, learn, the substance that is eked from the company you keep. If you eat a nasty creep or a freak, for example you simply won't eke.
Grains= raw ideas, swear words, lies, "inedible, not digestible."
Flour + oil= words, books, sciences, arts, creations that come from civilized persons and institutions. These we are indeed to consume.
Aromas= thoughts, words, deeds that honor the Decrees.
Olives= grown like libraries and schools and governments only by secure, stable and civilized persons.
Fermented Drinks= wine, also the product of civilization. Any jackass can squeeze a grape. The process of fermentation and serving the juice in a glass, from a bottle, both of which are sitting on a table around which sit your family, friends and guests is the culmination of the work of a firmly fluent and prosperous host.
Lambs are idiots, but willing to go with the flow.
Bulls are persons possessed of the personalities of toddlers.
Rams are arrogant, stubborn, egoistic.
Goats are hairy lads that have finally grown up. When we sacrifice a goat, or any animal for that matter we are putting him to work, applying effort equivalent to those listed in the Torah Tantras.
Days and nights: today vaults yesterday from tomorrow and don't you forget it. History lasts but a day, and if it wasn't a good one, then that day must come to an end and never repeat itself.
= "Boys are like Kleenexes. A fresh one should come out of the box every time."
Tenths: any kind of tenth refers to one or more of the Decrees. Two tenths = the Second Commandment. Three Tenths= the Third, etc.
Days, months numbers of animals by species: It's too complicated to create every set here but if you are so moved, all you have to do is look at the Day of the Week, which is a stage of evolution between troubling or unformed moments in life and their resolution in some newly enlightened place in life.
Take each scenario and recipe and decode according to the key I have provided and you will see the different ways the Torah can be used to put an end to all those bleak yesterdays.
ex. Food offerings are teachings that feed the intellect. A pleasing one would be a language class instead of a comic book. Two lambs a year old are two perfect days spent offering Grace (hin) instead of strife to repair some damage done by violating a Commandment, something called an Ephah and bringing upset to another person.
Contemplate the wrongs, ask the person out for food or a cocktail, bring yourself back into their graces and this will achieve Sinai, "unity with God".
Sometimes sins are cooked up, others are burnt or washed away, there are sacrifices of ignorance in exchange for incense, each offering places different evolutionary pressures on self and society in order to get them to comply with the expectations named in the Torah.
28 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Give this command to the Israelites and say to them: ‘Make sure that you present to me at the appointed time my food offerings, as an aroma pleasing to me.’ 3 Say to them: ‘This is the food offering you are to present to the Lord: two lambs a year old without defect, as a regular burnt offering each day. 4 Offer one lamb in the morning and the other at twilight, 5 together with a grain offering of a tenth of an ephah[g] of the finest flour mixed with a quarter of a hin[h] of oil from pressed olives. 6 This is the regular burnt offering instituted at Mount Sinai as a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord.
7 The accompanying drink offering is to be a quarter of a hin of fermented drink with each lamb. Pour out the drink offering to the Lord at the sanctuary. 8 Offer the second lamb at twilight, along with the same kind of grain offering and drink offering that you offer in the morning. This is a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.
Sabbath Offerings
9 “‘On the Sabbath day, make an offering of two lambs a year old without defect, together with its drink offering and a grain offering of two-tenths of an ephah[i] of the finest flour mixed with olive oil. 10 This is the burnt offering for every Sabbath, in addition to the regular burnt offering and its drink offering.
Monthly Offerings
11 “‘On the first of every month, present to the Lord a burnt offering of two young bulls, one ram and seven male lambs a year old, all without defect. 12 With each bull there is to be a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah[j] of the finest flour mixed with oil; with the ram, a grain offering of two-tenths of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil; 13 and with each lamb, a grain offering of a tenth of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil. This is for a burnt offering, a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord. 14 With each bull there is to be a drink offering of half a hin[k] of wine; with the ram, a third of a hin[l]; and with each lamb, a quarter of a hin. This is the monthly burnt offering to be made at each new moon during the year. 15 Besides the regular burnt offering with its drink offering, one male goat is to be presented to the Lord as a sin offering.[m]
The Passover
16 “‘On the fourteenth day of the first month the Lord’s Passover is to be held. 17 On the fifteenth day of this month there is to be a festival; for seven days eat bread made without yeast. 18 On the first day hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. 19 Present to the Lord a food offering consisting of a burnt offering of two young bulls, one ram and seven male lambs a year old, all without defect. 20 With each bull offer a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil; with the ram, two-tenths; 21 and with each of the seven lambs, one-tenth. 22 Include one male goat as a sin offering to make atonement for you. 23 Offer these in addition to the regular morning burnt offering. 24 In this way present the food offering every day for seven days as an aroma pleasing to the Lord; it is to be offered in addition to the regular burnt offering and its drink offering. 25 On the seventh day hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work.
The Festival of Weeks
26 “‘On the day of firstfruits, when you present to the Lord an offering of new grain during the Festival of Weeks, hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. 27 Present a burnt offering of two young bulls, one ram and seven male lambs a year old as an aroma pleasing to the Lord. 28 With each bull there is to be a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil; with the ram, two-tenths; 29 and with each of the seven lambs, one-tenth. 30 Include one male goat to make atonement for you. 31 Offer these together with their drink offerings, in addition to the regular burnt offering and its grain offering. Be sure the animals are without defect.
The Festival of Trumpets
29 “‘On the first day of the seventh month hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. It is a day for you to sound the trumpets. 2 As an aroma pleasing to the Lord, offer a burnt offering of one young bull, one ram and seven male lambs a year old, all without defect. 3 With the bull offer a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah[n] of the finest flour mixed with olive oil; with the ram, two-tenths[o]; 4 and with each of the seven lambs, one-tenth.[p] 5 Include one male goat as a sin offering[q] to make atonement for you. 6 These are in addition to the monthly and daily burnt offerings with their grain offerings and drink offerings as specified. They are food offerings presented to the Lord, a pleasing aroma.
The Day of Atonement
7 “‘On the tenth day of this seventh month hold a sacred assembly. You must deny yourselves[r] and do no work. 8 Present as an aroma pleasing to the Lord a burnt offering of one young bull, one ram and seven male lambs a year old, all without defect. 9 With the bull offer a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil; with the ram, two-tenths; 10 and with each of the seven lambs, one-tenth. 11 Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the sin offering for atonement and the regular burnt offering with its grain offering, and their drink offerings.
The Festival of Tabernacles
12 “‘On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, hold a sacred assembly and do no regular work. Celebrate a festival to the Lord for seven days. 13 Present as an aroma pleasing to the Lord a food offering consisting of a burnt offering of thirteen young bulls, two rams and fourteen male lambs a year old, all without defect. 14 With each of the thirteen bulls offer a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil; with each of the two rams, two-tenths; 15 and with each of the fourteen lambs, one-tenth. 16 Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and drink offering.
17 “‘On the second day offer twelve young bulls, two rams and fourteen male lambs a year old, all without defect. 18 With the bulls, rams and lambs, offer their grain offerings and drink offerings according to the number specified. 19 Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering, and their drink offerings.
20 “‘On the third day offer eleven bulls, two rams and fourteen male lambs a year old, all without defect. 21 With the bulls, rams and lambs, offer their grain offerings and drink offerings according to the number specified. 22 Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and drink offering.
23 “‘On the fourth day offer ten bulls, two rams and fourteen male lambs a year old, all without defect. 24 With the bulls, rams and lambs, offer their grain offerings and drink offerings according to the number specified. 25 Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and drink offering.
26 “‘On the fifth day offer nine bulls, two rams and fourteen male lambs a year old, all without defect. 27 With the bulls, rams and lambs, offer their grain offerings and drink offerings according to the number specified. 28 Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and drink offering.
29 “‘On the sixth day offer eight bulls, two rams and fourteen male lambs a year old, all without defect. 30 With the bulls, rams and lambs, offer their grain offerings and drink offerings according to the number specified. 31 Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and drink offering.
32 “‘On the seventh day offer seven bulls, two rams and fourteen male lambs a year old, all without defect. 33 With the bulls, rams and lambs, offer their grain offerings and drink offerings according to the number specified. 34 Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and drink offering.
35 “‘On the eighth day hold a closing special assembly and do no regular work. 36 Present as an aroma pleasing to the Lord a food offering consisting of a burnt offering of one bull, one ram and seven male lambs a year old, all without defect. 37 With the bull, the ram and the lambs, offer their grain offerings and drink offerings according to the number specified. 38 Include one male goat as a sin offering, in addition to the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and drink offering.
39 “‘In addition to what you vow and your freewill offerings, offer these to the Lord at your appointed festivals: your burnt offerings, grain offerings, drink offerings and fellowship offerings.’”
40 Moses told the Israelites all that the Lord commanded him.[s]
Vows
30 [t]Moses said to the heads of the tribes of Israel: “This is what the Lord commands."
Thus ends Parsha Pinchas, "the Oracle" numbered 41 of 54 contained in the Holy Torah.
*Mentions of brass in the Torah also certainly date it past 250 BCE. Brass, unfortunately, was mainstreamed by Rome and used to make those spiffy helmets the boys all liked to wear after they volunteered for the Legion.

Note
Ellie, my darling, I'm here to request some soft, cute shit.
In honor of the landing of Mars Perseverance rover landing, I would love to see Jaskier getting emotional over it!
That little rover, up there all alone, doing its scientific duty!
I imagine he'd be especially emotional thinking about how the Curiosity rover sang itself happy birthday out there, all alone.
(I'm thinking Geralt is confused but loving and supportive - but very confused by his friend/boyfriend/husband/whatever)
Thank you darling. ILU
Thank you for the prompt! ilu2 <3 and thank you for proofreading this :D
thank you @stinastar for the idea for this <3
In which Jaskier and Geralt watch the landing of the mars rover Perseverance. Jaskier gets emotional and Geralt is there for him. Modern AU with an established relationship, 900 words
This is a silly little fluffy fic and I did absolutely zero research for it, so I'm sorry if you find any incorrect stuff
CW: sex is mentioned without detail, Jaskier get's emotional about the Rover being all alone on a foreign planet (but this is fluff with a happy ending!)

Perseverance
“What are you watching?” Jaskier asked as he walked into the living room. Geralt was sitting on the couch with a beer in hand.
“NASA live stream,” Geralt said - as always his taciturn self.
Jaskier rolled his eyes in fond exasperation.
“Anything interesting?”
Geralt huffed. He knew that his boyfriend found most of these things boring. The only thing that could mysteriously hold his attention were nature documentaries and (not so mysteriously) dating shows.
“The landing of Perseverance,” he said and turned his head to look at Jaskier. As the younger man lifted his eyebrows in question, Geralt continued, “the rover they send to mars.”
“Oh, that is in fact interesting,” Jaskier said, “move over.” He waved his hand at Geralt to make room on the couch and plopped down next to him. He drew up his legs to sit cross- legged, pressing his knee into Geralt’s thigh.
“Is the rover still in space?” Jaskier asked.
When Geralt nodded, he asked, “when will it land?”
“Probably in half an hour.”
“And what do all those people do?” Jaskier asked after a while. The stream showed the control room full of people on computers.
“Do you actually want to know?” Geralt asked, one eyebrow raised.
Jaskier hummed non-committedly, reached for Geralt’s beer and emptied it one go.
Geralt sighed but didn’t complain and put his arm around his boyfriend.
A moment later Jaskier burped loudly.
“You’re disgusting,” Geralt said but hugged him closer.
“But you love me anyway,” Jaskier replied with a smile.
Geralt grunted but stroked his thumb over Jaskier’s arm.
“Say it,” Jaskier said, jabbing his index finger on Geralt’s knee.
Geralt grunted but said, “I love you anyway.”
Jaskier smiled and snuggled closer to Geralt, so he could lean his head on his shoulder.
As the moderator of the live stream gave updates about the velocity of the spacecraft and the distance to the surface of mars, the tension grew not only in the control room on the tv but also in Jaskier.
“Will there be a countdown?” Jaskier asked.
“Don’t know,” Geralt said, “it’s not like at the launch where they can time it precisely, so probably not.”
Jaskier reached over, grabbed Geralt’s hand and squeezed it.
“Do you think everything will go according to plan?” Jaskier asked with worry in his voice.
Geralt shrugged and said, “probably not, there is always something they couldn’t plan for.”
Jaskier squeezed Geralt’s hand harder as the updates about the distance to the mars surface grew smaller and smaller.
“I hope he will be alright,” Jaskier whispered.
And suddenly everyone in the stream cheered!
The moderator announced that the rover had landed. Safely!
The worry on Jaskier’s face was washed away by a wide smile and he threw his arms around Geralt. Geralt hugged him back and drew him in his lap.
Jaskier gasped but smiled softly at his boyfriend. Slowly he leaned forward and brushed his nose against Geralt’s. All of a sudden the cheering and the landing of the mars rover were forgotten. Jaskier weaved his fingers through Geralt’s white hair and tucked at it just a bit.
Geralt hummed deep in his chest, which sounded almost like a growl and leaned forward to kiss him. Jaskier’s soft lips tasted like beer and the strawberry chapstick he used. They had been together for a few weeks now but it was still thrilling for Geralt that he could just kiss Jaskier - something he had been thinking about for way longer.
Without breaking the kiss he got up with Jaskier in his arms bridal style and made his way to the bedroom.
Jaskier giggled, “if I’d known that space and mars rovers turned you on…” But he was silenced by another kiss from Geralt.
----
After some mind-blowing sex (where not only minds were blown), they lay lazily in bed. Geralt was dozing and Jaskier was scrolling through his phone.
And suddenly his mood changed.
Someone had posted the first photo the rover took of mars, with the caption: “this is now my forever home.”
Something in Jaskier’s chest felt tight and he inhaled sharply.
Geralt opened his eyes to look at him closely and frowned as he saw tears glitter in Jaskier’s eyes.
“What’s wrong?” he asked as he reached over to tuck a soft brown curl behind Jaskier’s ear.
“Everything okay?”
“No,” Jaskier said, his voice oddly thick.
“Geralt, do you think the rover is lonely?”
Geralt tilted his head and drew his brows together in confusion. “What?”
“The mars rover. He is all alone up there.” Jaskier looked in Geralt’s hazel eyes with utter despair.
“Jaskier, that is a rover, a machine, it doesn’t feel.”
“How do you know that he doesn’t feel?” Jaskier whispered.
“It,” Geralt interrupted him, “not he.”
This was utterly ridiculous, but as a single tear started to roll down Jaskier’s cheek.
He knew that Jaskier was prone to sudden mood swings.
Then he remembered something.
“Jaskier,” he said softly, “there are other rovers on mars.”
“Really?”
“Yes,” Geralt said, “Sojourner, Opportunity…” he counted on his fingers, “Curiosity, probably one or two more…”
A smile broke over Jaskier’s face.
“And if I remember correctly, they send some kind of small helicopter or drone with the rover this time.”
“So he has a friend with him?” Jaskier said and Geralt nodded.
“They can visit his brothers!”
Geralt smiled at his wonderful and silly boyfriend and nodded once more.
“Yes, they can visit his brothers.”

💥 || There would be a highly probable chance that the world would either break or harden Hanzo Hasashi’s heart; in the blue liquid of the unknowing tapestry of the flowing history, bits of inevitable and unmistakable tragedy and despair surfaces to the horizon like corpses or trash. With the mellowed intoxication comes what people call solitude, an elation for his soul. A surreal feeling he has come to hone, to be absorbed into his own thoughts, a never-ending sojourn of freedom from the unkind world.
How Hanzo Hasashi’s unspoken words remain entrapped in his throat; bitter and quiet in his mouth. He wishes to turn them around and try to spit them out, but in his throat, they stay - defiant and lost and stale. Ever since Hanzo Hasashi lost the proverbial blossom of a rose, with beauty coming from within, his unadulterated essence was wilted away, leaving nothing but a memory. Despite it, what was dead did not remain dead and the dualism of stormy, zealous passion and the resplendent light and warmth of his newfound love would considerably mitiigate the ice, cold mold that he once placed around his heart. Lest he often would find himself swallowing them down, with the onslaught rush of strong liquor burning its track ablaze down his throat, Ryou Sakai would become his safe haven his shattered soul was yearning for.
Days have become excruciatingly heavy, as if his feet were sinking into the quagmire, bearing the weight he is struggling to carry. More than often, Hanzo musters strength enough to withstand the bearing weight, as his confidence and defiant assertiveness valiantly forces his feet up out of the mud, lest dirt keeps his head on straight. Life had been abundance of heavy weight and his knees lodged in the dirt; as he keeps on persevering and continuing on. Brow furrows deeply, pinching tightly as his proverbial, mysterious strength rises deep within. The fathomless depth of his torment and despair, lest filled with sorrowful reverence as telltale feverous heat burning ablaze in the depth of his heart and soul manifests itself as what used to be a nonchalant furrow transforms inevitably into an aggressive declaration.
“If you are going to annihilate our precious time of solitude and bliss, waving hollow pistols in front of us will only aggravate us, thus exacerbating your unfortunate predicament,” the night bestowed upon them may continue to be tender; soft black over the light of Hanzo and his beloved, entangled in affections of the body and mind. Even without the literal exemplification of coalescing limbs redefining the state of their inconspicuous unity, Hanzo Hasashi’s shared abundant light of judgment becomes eager to swallow the drunkard’s own, lest his words are cast without fathomless enmity. “Do not let the watery intoxication of your tragically misplaced judgment birth further despair and tribulations, and I do speak from my own experience.”  💥 ||

[Me after reading Viv ‘n’ San’s “fuck you shitlords”-going-to-the-Hollow-Earth Ask and the Abraxas April Fool’s Ask:]
Honestly, what I’m really wondering wondering after GvK is how long it’s gonna be before Godzilla finally decides modern human civilisation has had enough second chances and they just aren’t going to stop, and he nukes all of humanity back to living in caves, hunting with sticks and huddling around campfires again, so humanity will start over like when the Hollow Earth civilisation perished. I mean, when the Kongs started enslaving and killing other Titans, Godzilla decimated them to just a few exiles; when the Hollow Earth civilisation tried to control and enslave all the Titans as war beasts, Godzilla blasted them back to the stone age… But modern human civilisation has gotten no more than a slap on the wrist for: letting Space-Satan out of his prison to wreak an apocalypse, and then even worse following up on that by bringing said Space-Satan back to life while ACTIVELY TRYING TO USURP GODZILLA AFTER EVERYTHING HE DID TO SAVE THE WORLD, before even HALF A DECADE had passed.
If Godzilla does eventually nuke humanity back to the stone age in Abraxas-verse in the future because modern civilisation has gone too far and just won’t calm down, maybe Viv ‘n’ San being on vacay in the Hollow Earth will mean Vivienne in particular won’t have to struggle with watching the one she worships as a god bring the proverbial Great Flood upon her former-species because Viv ‘n’ San probably won’t even know what’s happened on Earth’s surface until it’s already been done and dusted.
Boy is Monster X in for one hell of a bad day when they sojourn up-top to see how things are, only to find the aftermath of Godzilla unleashing the wrath of, well, god on mankind. Suffice to say, they’re furious. They don’t challenge his dominion, no point in that, but they challenge his decision to nuke humanity back to the Stone Age based on the actions of what must have been comparatively only a few humans.
It only takes a few, Godzilla responds. Only a few to reawaken things that should have been left alone, only a few to make weapons intended to kill Titans, only a few to encourage more.
But that doesn’t justify destroying so many innocent lives, Monster X argues. My father didn’t sacrifice his life just for you to turn your back on them!
Whether it results in a fight or something else, it ends with Godzilla just looking so TIRED that he’s just like, Fine. Do as you like. Take my place above and become their new protector if it please you. See how long it takes for a few to set their wits to work and plot your death and gut their own world.
And Monster X decides, Yeah, maybe we’ll do just that! Don’t bother calling us next time you need help, BECAUSE WE WON’T BE LISTENING! It feels like a weird mix between a breakup and a bad falling out with a teacher/family figure. They try not to think about how much it hurts to think about Godzilla now. They return up-top and work to defend survivors from opportunistic hunters; it doesn’t take long for humans to make little idols of their new god (Bone God, The Thrice-Born, Executioner).
Sometimes the Bone God hears a familiar call from the Hollow Earth, one that used to warm their heart, but pretends not to hear it. Sometimes there are nights when they expect to hear the call, maybe even yearn to hear it, but the earth is painfully silent. Eventually mankind begins telling of a Great Enemy from the sea who brought floods and death to their ancestors, and an old hurt reopens inside Monster X’s chest.
Don’t hate him, the Thrice-Born sings to those who can hear. This world is his home, too. He has been betrayed so many times. Don’t hate him. Please.

The Union of the Companions Chapter One
Part one of my Dungeons and dragons style four fandom crossover.
Summary: The land of Faerun is just one of Chuck’s many realities, as is Middle Earth, and Kenshin’s Meiji era Japan. He’s been toying with Kenshin, Drizzt, and Fili, and Kili just like he toys with the Winchesters. Now, as the Winchesters rebel against him, he’s decided to bring them all together for one final showdown.
This is a dungeons and dragons style story of eight companions traveling Faerun, looking for a way home and encountering many villains.
Pairing: Castiel/Hannah. This will be the only romantic pairing as this fic will focus primarily on platonic love and brotherly love. The characters will be Drizzt Do’Urden, Kenshin Himura, Sam, and Dean Winchester, Castiel, Hannah, and Fili and Kili.
Fandoms: Rurouni Kenshin, Supernatural, The Hobbit movie verse, The Legend of Drizzt Dark Elf Trilogy by R. A Salvatore
Warnings and tags: fandom typical violence, massacres, blood, and gore. Tags may change as the story progresses as I haven’t planned details for that far ahead. Note that this story does fall within a canon timeline, it is AU. For Supernatural, it takes place shortly after the events of s15 e03 “The Rupture.” For the Hobbit, it takes place after the battle of the five armies except for an alternate ending in which Fili and Kili survive. For Drizzt, it takes place during the early events of the book “Sojourn,” and for Kenshin, it takes place after his fight with Shishio in season two of the anime. Although for Kenshin, this will be a blend of the anime and the live-action movie trilogy.

Chapter One
“How long will they pursue me, Guenhwyvar?” Drizzt lamented as he peered down into the ravine to see the small band of adventurers who had been on his trail for days. No matter how he tried to evade them, they pursued him, spurred on mostly by a large burly human and his dog.
That human wanted revenge on Drizzt for their encounter which had ended the life of one of the man’s dogs, and had left him without an ear. Drizzt hadn’t wanted to hurt him, and it pained him to have to kill such a loyal companion. After all, where would he be without Guenhwyvar? His faithful black panther had stayed at his side and accepted him where no other had.
But the human had left him with no choice. He’d been cornered, and forced to defend himself. His need for acceptance and his distaste for violence hadn’t yet extended to the idea that he should sacrifice himself to such principals.
After all, he’d avenged the bloody murder of the farming family, a murder scene that he still couldn’t get out of his head. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the terrible slaughter, the children dead in their beds.
As Drizzt stood on the lip of the ravine, peering down at the humans, shrouded from their view by a copse of trees, he imagined himself being accepted by them. If only they could see past his drow heritage. Belwar the gnome could attest to that. Of course, it would help if Drizzt could speak their language.
The sun was beginning to set and Drizzt was getting tired. He was still wounded from the barghests. His chest ached, although the bite of pain was less than it had been before. He was healing, but he continued to walk with a limp.
“Let’s find a secure place for the night,” Drizzt said to his panther companion as he struggled towards the mountains, searching for a cave. When he rounded the sheer cliff and came upon a thick growth of trees, he saw a twinkle down by the trees. Kneeling, he picked up a thick blade laying in the grass. It was broken in two, but the hilt bore a strange insignia, and the design was reminiscent of a goblin.
Looking further, Drizzt saw what seemed to be blood smeared in the grass. With a frown, he exchanged a glance with Guenhwyvar before getting to his feet and putting a hand on the hilt of his one remaining scimitar, moving slowly into the forested grove, cautious and alert.
He ventured further into the forest, the trees dimming the light above. He walked a few feet until he came to a small clearing, and there, he discovered a travesty. Bodies were scattered everywhere, spears impaling some corpses, and others were hacked to bits. Drizzt counted about six prone bodies.
Upon closer inspection, Drizzt discovered that they were elves. Four females and two males. The image brought up haunting memories. The last time he had witnessed such a sight was after his own kind had murdered and massacred an entire village of surface elves. Drizzt squeezed his eyes closed, silently praying to any gods or goddesses who were just, that this was not the work of his kin.
He opened his eyes, steeling himself, and examined the torn bodies, looking for the telltale sign of drow weapons. There would be the slashing wounds caused by swords of the Underdark, and crossbow bolts. There certainly would have been a priestess in the party, so Drizzt looked for signs of enchantments.
He let out a sigh of relief upon finding no signs of such weapons. The bodies were surrounding the remains of a campfire. A few feet away lay an overturned cart and two dead horses.
“Traders, perhaps,” Drizzt murmured to himself. He wasn’t sure what kind of creatures could have caused this atrocity. He was unfamiliar with the creatures of the surface world. He thought perhaps they could be gnolls or goblins, as he recognized the spears. But he couldn’t be sure. One thing he did know is that he would have to remain in the region for longer than he had hoped if he was going to ensure that nothing threatened this village.
The villagers may hate him and they may blame him for their recent calamities, but Drizzt bore them no ill will, and he was determined that before he could leave the region and search for a new home and possible acceptance, he would have to find the killers of these magnificent elves, his cousins.
Drizzt had hoped that he would meet elves upon coming to the surface. He’d been curious about them ever since the massacre more than ten years ago now. They were slender, agile, light on their feet, with ears shaped like his. The only thing that differed was Drizzt’s dark skin and white flowing hair.
And indeed, one of the members of the party currently chasing him was an elf. Drizzt longed to make contact with him, talk to him. But he did not dare get close. He knew his pursuers were likely after his life, spurred on by hate and a need for revenge over the massacre they assumed he had caused.
But here, strewn across the forest floor, were more of his elven kin. Silenced forever by some unseen foe. Drizzt promised to himself that he would avenge them. One way or another. Silently, he slipped away and further into the forest, searching for tracks that could lead him to his new enemies.
**
Chuck watched as Drizzt set about burying the bodies of the slain elves and then limped off in search of shelter. The smug deity smirked. There were only a few of his worlds left. He thought he should be upset at all his failed projects, but this was all the Winchesters’ fault, after all.
He’d saved the last couple of worlds because they were his favorites. The drow elf experiencing the surface world for the first time, the samurai who vowed never to kill again, the dwarf brothers who followed their uncle into battle and saw more than they were prepared to, and of course, those pesky Winchesters. They’d always been his favorites.
But lately, his favorite creations were causing him far too much grief. He was the writer after all, and they were only his creations. How dare they try to control themselves? He had ultimate control.
As he wandered through the woods, he wondered where the story should take him next. Juggling this many projects at once was challenging, even for a god. He had been indifferent to all the others, but these last few were the most challenging, with characters as willful as these. Writing was hard after all. And Amara was being a total bitch to him. Well, he hadn’t bothered to tell her of these other projects that he’d kept. He fully planned to get around to destroying even these last few worlds, but he wanted them all to go out with a bang.
Then, just as it always had, inspiration struck. He grinned as the idea came to him. Maybe instead of juggling these projects separately, he’d put them all together! But that would take some major planning. There would need to be a plot, a setting, and of course, plenty of conflicts. But it could work. When he glanced around at this world, he couldn’t think of a better setting for his master plot. The world of Faerun was certainly one of his masterpieces. He’d created the entire reality just so he could watch his favorite pet in this particular reality- Drizzt. Unlike Sam and Dean, who were a constant thorn in his side, Drizzt wasn’t even aware of his existence. Sure he knew of all the other gods and goddesses who had stepped in to help him with this place, but he didn’t know that he was simply a playing piece on Chuck’s massive chessboard. And he certainly didn’t know how many chess boards Chuck had.
Well, maybe now was a perfect chance for his favorites to meet each other. Chuck rubbed his hands together as he set about putting everything together Prepping this world for the others would be quick work for a god, but it still took perfect planning.

Completed fics? Or one shots? Ur amazing
A Foolish Wit - seabiscuit
Lena Luthor needs a husband, Clark Danvers needs an easy resolution to his cash flow problem. Unfortunately, the best laid plans often go awry. Or, Lena Luthor is actually rich, but Clark Danvers isn’t actually Clark Danvers. It’s complicated.
sojourn - concreteskies
When Lena has to move to London for a month, she asks Kara to come along and join her. As friends of course. (Friends that smile at each other a lot. Friends that think about each other’s lips a lot. That kind of friends.) It goes about as well as you’d imagine.
you are the fire (and i’m gasoline) - youmeandem
Lena forgets all about the stars and how pretty they are at the sight of Kara laughing, because even in the bad torch lighting, Kara is prettier than all the stars combined. Something twists in Lena’s stomach. She wants to lean forward and press her lips against Kara’s, and she almost does, but then she realizes what she’s doing and she stops herself just in time before Kara notices anything. or: kara and lena meet as teenagers au
A fiancée for Christmas - kellsbells
Alex is, as always, being hounded by Eliza about Kara’s life. In particular, her personal life. Alex blurts out a lie on a whim, pretending that Kara is engaged, and begs Kara to go along with the lie. Kara mentions the situation to her very platonic friend Lena Luthor, who offers to step in. Hijinks ensue
Monster Under The Bed - BiJane
Lillian Luthor wants everyone to fear Supergirl. That includes her daughter.
The Fifth Wall - Black_Tea_and_Bones
Kara goes to bed with Mon-El, and wakes up with Lena Luthor. But it isn’t Kara’s bed, and they’re not in Lena’s apartment, and that is definitely not their baby… Right?
Kara is Terrible at Keeping Secrets - Rhino (RhinoMouse)
Twenty-eight ways Lena Luther could find out that Kara is an alien. Surprisingly that doesn’t necessarily mean she finds out she’s Supergirl. Because Kara is really terrible at keeping secrets.
Destruction (sometimes means rebirth) - BloodInTheFields
There’s not much that she can do. The heat, she doesn’t feel. She walks through the flames and uses her x-ray vision to spot any survivor, but there’s nothing. Only devastation. or, in which Kara loses Lena, but does she really?
Giant - coeurastronaute
Kara and Lena meet in high school, but then life. (not a high school AU). Lena leaves and they meet up again, this time as Supergirl and Lena Luthor.
no one but you (got me feeling this way) - AgentJoanneMills
It’s not like Kara deliberately sets out to make her life harder than it should be. It’s not her fault that she’s excitable, okay, and she forgets things sometimes and maybe those things should not be forgotten under any circumstances. Maybe those things include, well, housing forms, which as it turns out are super important to submit on time if she wants to not be homeless in her sophomore year of college. Her sister’s going to give her so much crap about this (Alternatively: in which Kara forgot to fill out the housing form and was left with no choice but to live in the most exclusive apartment on campus.)
If you don’t love me, pretend (just for a few more hours)… - Khrat9
Kara Danvers had been a recent development she never saw coming. They weren’t friends. Lena didn’t like to blur the lines; she made a point to be professional with everyone in her workspace and especially reporters, however cute they may be. Au : where Kara and Lena aren’t friends. One night stands… but like several nights per month, sometimes more.
Not Afraid to Fall - prettyaveragewhiteshark
Lena Luthor has a strictly sexual relationship with Supergirl, but when her feelings for amateur journalist Kara Danvers begin to grow, everything gets a lot more complicated. See inside for smut, feelings, rogue DEO agents, feelings, explosions, angst, and more feelings!
Unavoidable Dreams - C_AND_B
“Kara had sex dreams. About Lena. Kara Danvers had extremely vivid sex dreams about Lena Luthor and she couldn’t stop thinking about it. It comes in snippets, and flashes, and visions and then it slams into her all at once, so fast she can barely breathe through the palpitations in her chest. Then it lingers. It’s there when she blinks, and when she sleeps, and every time she turns and finds Lena by her side (which seems to be increasing with every passing day).” Or, Kara has sex dreams and then just awkwardly fumbles through interactions with Lena.
Swipe Right for a Super - eluigih
Lena Luthor matches with Supergirl on tinder and she’s convinced that she’s being catfished.
Whispers - gabs88
“Lena is pale, her face washed out. Her knuckles are white where they grip her glass. Lillian is standing in the doorway as if this is any normal meeting, her face humourless. A mask. It’s what Kara noticed most, trapped with Mon’El in that place. Lillian is a difficult person to get any kind of read on. In some ways, so is Lena. But she’s warm where her mother is not. Smiles softly, grins like seeing Kara is the highlight of her day. She throws expressions around with ease. Ones that make Kara’s heart speed up, make her want to bite her own lip in return. Or bite Lena’s for her. But have they been real? That’s an entirely different question.”
Secretaries Know Best - Rhino (RhinoMouse)
Jess has been Ms.Luthor’s assistant long enough to know that she has terrible taste in women. So when her boss finally starts crushing on newbie reporter and loyal beam of sunshine Kara Danvers, Jess rejoices. But there are vultures hovering, unworthy boys and a pesky caped wonder and Jess will damned before she lets them ruin things.
but i’m weak (and what’s wrong with that?) - exprsslyfrbidden
Lillian threatens to hurt Supergirl if Lena continues their friendship. Naturally, this means they should become friends with benefits.
a necessary ingredient - geoclaire
Kara and Lena go out for drinks after work, and end up talking about how the general public think about Supergirl. And how Lena does. Things flow from there. But how exactly are an alien and the sister of the country’s most famous xenophobe supposed to build a relationship?
One Shots
make my wish come true - falsealarm
“Kara said she could come over whenever she was free, had literally texted Lena saying she would welcome the company so she knows she isn’t going to intrude but Lena’s three hours early and she doesn’t know if that welcome extends this far ahead.” AKA Lena shows up early to a friend get-together at Kara’s and things get festive (and flirty) real quick.
we are what we pretend to be - C_AND_B
After the unrestricted office access, and the flowers, and the surprise visits to Catco, everyone just kinda starts to assume Kara and Lena are dating, and maybe they should let them. (AKA, Lena and Kara really just date whilst pretending they’re fake dating).
I Just Want to Love You in My Own Language - lynnearlington
“In the center of it all, on her desk, is a gorgeous glass vase full of over two dozen lavender roses. “Pretty,” she murmurs as she comes around to look at them. In the middle of the light purple flowers is a small card, thank you written in elegant script over the surface. There’s no name, but there doesn’t need to be.” [A love story, told with flowers]
wonderful electric (cover me in you) - falsealarm
Lena makes Kara feel like she’s vibrating, like her nerve endings are alight with electricity and it’s intoxicating to say the least. (Tentatively, 4 interruptions + 1 free night.)
in the sun - isawet
Lena needs a date and Kara needs a job. (fake dating supercorp)
You to Me, Me to You - wtfoctagon
When Kara sees a vase of flowers on Lena’s desk, she doesn’t get jealous per se– it’s just that she thinks that Lena deserves so much better than a measly, cliche bunch of roses.
you can hear it in the silence (you’re in love) - C_AND_B
“Kara who always makes her feel trusted, and believed in, and safe. Kara who makes her glance up at a shooting star and make a wish. Kara whose frame is sturdy but soft. Kara whose slight touch makes a shiver run down her spine. Kara who she’s fairly sure she’ll be irrevocably in love with before she can figure out a way to stop it.– She might already be too late.” (the evolution of Kara and Lena’s relationship alongside the lyrics of ‘you are in love’)
Our Circle Meets - uhpockuhlipz
Meeting one’s soulmate is supposed to be monumental. It is supposed to be the most important event of one’s life and from everything Lena’s seen, that moment is almost sacred. So it’s a bit baffling when Lena finds hers and the whole world seems to stop spinning in that moment… but Kara Danvers doesn’t seem to notice it at all. OR the quintessential red string of fate AU (though it’s woven into canon 'verse).
cops, robbers & incredibly bad decisions - C_AND_B
Kara’s been trying to catch a masked criminal for months, and Lena, well Lena is just trying to steal from the rich and give to the poor (or something along those lines).
The Six Times Lena Tries to Tell Kara She’s Pregnant and the One Time Kara Takes the Hint - JediFighterPilot2727
Can you write a one shot where Lena finds out she is pregnant and then gives little hints to Kara and then because Kara is obvious Lena has to yell it out to her. Extra points for over the moon Kara and smut!!!
pain - cautiouslyoptimistic
lena’s never felt her soulmate’s pain and she’s sure that it’s because her soulmate doesn’t exist at all or, it takes twenty-one years and thousands of light years for lena to find kara
Luthor Escort Services - uhpockuhlipz
Kara needs a last minute date to her sister’s wedding. Luthor’s Escort Services is there to help, but Lena is nothing like what Kara was expecting or a fake dating AU that is just… ridiculous.
when i think about you (well, you know the rest) - Jazzfordshire
“The world comes to a grinding halt for a moment when she sees something bad. Something horrific. Possibly the worst thing that’s ever happened in human or Kryptonian history. A solid little purple arrow, coloured in, next to Lena’s name.” OR - Wherein Lena makes a realization during a private moment, and Snapchat almost ruins Kara’s life.
Lena Luthor’s Apartment - 13lxclkr
Lena Luthor actually has an apartment and sometimes, a certain blonde likes to crash on her couch.
Comfort and Warmth - spacemanearthgirl
Kara’s heart is pounding in her chest, this certainly isn’t the way she wanted Alex to find out about her small (giant) crush on Lena.
your sunday best (looks best on my floor) - Jazzfordshire
“Siri, is it possible to die from sexual frustration?”   “I’m sorry, I don’t understand.”   Lena sighs. “Of course you don’t. Fine. Siri, make a note – give incentives to the R&D team for finishing the red sun lamp. As quickly as possible.”
exception - cautiouslyoptimistic
kara keeps doing strange things, and lena doesn’t know what to make of it or, kara is in love and it takes lena an absurdly long time to notice
Hey, Are You Lena Luthor? - gveret
Those first words a soulmate is destined to say to you are supposed to be magical, indescribable, life changing. But for Lena Luthor, they’re just an everyday occurrence. (In which Lena has the most infuriatingly mundane soul mark.)
out of the darkness (and into the sun) - intolauren
“I hit you with my car and was the only one to visit you in the hospital, this is sort of awkward, are you okay?”

Abide in Me
Jesus discusses relationships in today’s Gospel lesson, relationships between himself and the Father and between himself and his disciples. God, the Father, is the vinegrower, the creator, the very source of life. And Jesus is the vine through which this life blood flows. We are the branches, free to accept or reject our connection to the vine. Accepting or rejecting God's gift given through Jesus has profound implications.
In his book entitled I and Thou, theologian Martin Buber describes two relational spaces people inhabit. There is the “I-It” space and there is the “I-Thou” space.
“I-It” is when we treat each other as objects, as tools to provide for our needs, or as supports for the roles each of us play. It’s the cashier’s job to take our money for items purchased at the grocery store. She functions to provide a specified service. And there’s nothing inherently wrong with seeing her in that light. She is an “it,” a thing that provides for our needs and she is paid to do so. The “I-It” is a well-used relational space that all of us live in for large portions of our lives. But it isn’t the only relational space available to us.
The “I-Thou” space is different. Sometimes we leave the “I-It” space and enter “I-Thou.” This happens when we connect in a deeper way with another person. I believe it is that space that Jesus is encouraging us to enter in his words from John’s Gospel.
Here’s an example from my life. I went to visit a new patient and encountered him asleep with a spouse and daughter at his bedside. The spouse asked if we had anywhere on the unit where she could get away briefly, from time to time, just to sit and think. So, I took her for a brief tour, showing her the unit’s great windowed space with an attached outside sitting area. I was doing my job, unmoved, somewhat mechanical. She was the patient’s family member, an “It” whom my job requires I tend to and serve. We returned to the room.
After a few minutes of conversation the woman got serious, approached me, and asked, “Can we pray?” She reached out her hands and I grasped them. The daughter too reached out and we all held each other's hands.
“What should we pray for?” I asked. The woman began to cry. With time, and after staring at her sleeping husband, she was able to stammer out, “for him to get well.”
We prayed. And I knew I wasn’t in Kansas anymore. I had left the “I-It” space and entered the “I-Thou” space. I could feel strong empathetic emotions rising up within me. She had moved me to feel. She had drawn my humanity to the surface and the separation that had clearly defined me from her now became less obvious. In that moment, we were together, joined in our shared humanity.
Through the experience she, an “It,” had become a “Thou,” a person, a fellow sojourner on a common human journey. And not only was she transformed. The “I” of the “I-It” dyad was transformed as well. The “I” of the “I-Thou” dyad transcends the materialistic world of things and becomes undifferentiated, connected and whole.
Consider the words of Jesus from today’s gospel lesson. 15:4 “Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me.”
“Abide in me as I abide in you.” When we, as branches, open ourselves to our connection to Jesus, the vine, we are altered, transformed, into complete beings into whom the love of God can enter. Empowered with God’s love we can bear the fruit of God, for without it we can only bear worldly fruit, which will decay and die.
Reading over the gospel lesson this week I marveled at verse 2. Was it really saying what I was reading?
In it Jesus says of himself: “He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit.”
Jesus, the Son of God, undergoes pruning? Jesus, the object of our faith and worship, requires adjustment and nurturing?
Why would he speak this way? Because while Jesus is indeed the Messiah, the Son of God, we mustn’t limit what he offers us by seeing him only as an “It,” as a thing to be worshipped and honored, a thing beyond our ability to connect with relationally.
No, Jesus purposefully exposes his vulnerabilities as a human being so that we can know him as a brother and fellow fruit bearer for God, the Father. We must go beyond an “I-It” relationship with Jesus and enter into “I-Thou.” When we resist this movement we say no to God's love and disconnect ourselves from Jesus, the vine, and inevitably we wither into lifeless, separate, branches.
Therefore, be open, beloved, to the connection with Jesus and with one another, that God’s love may not be impeded by separations between vine and branches. It is through our deep, relational connections that love flows and God’s fruit is borne into the world. Amen.

I wear robes with well-worn hems,
Reminding me of my dear wife
I fondly think of always,
So as my sojourn stretches on tabi
Ever farther from home,
Sadness fills my thoughts.
This elegiac love poem is drawn from The Tales of Ise, and in its original form the first letters of each verse spell out the word kakitsubata, the Japanese word for irises.
In a short moment we will return to the significance of this poem, and why the lord or lady dining of this plate would have been reminded of it.
Introduction
Subdued, but yet majestic, the grace and elegance of this plate is as captivating today as it would have been to its contemporary audience. Small in size measuring merely 184 mm in diameter and 27 mm in height and dating from sometime in between 1750 and 1799, that is the Edo period, this is an exquisite example of Nabeshima ware: an exclusive type of ceramic produced for the highest ranks in society. Its thick glazing and smooth surfaces, together with the blue and white iris motif express a sense of timeless beauty.
Development of Nabeshima ware
The story of Nabeshima ware begins in the 17th century in the Arita kilns, where Japanese blue and white porcelain was first developed.
The Arita kilns were owned by the Nabeshima lord, who in order to gain favour with the Shogun spurred the development of a new type of exclusive china significantly different from what could be obtained on the open market. By the late 17th century he succeeded, and particularly noteworthy was the innovation of Polychrome Nabeshima, which in the words of Mikami ‘over glaze enamels were used to cover the under glaze outlines drawn in blue’ (1972, p.162).
When the Shogun gained power in 1603 he introduced a strict social hierarchy somewhat based on Confucian ideals: at the top were the samurai, followed by farmers, then craftsmen and last came the merchants. However, as the Edo period was a time of peace and prosperity the Samurai’s warrior abilities were no longer needed where as the mercantile class grew wealthy. Nabeshima ware functioned as a part of a larger culture policy which would keep the social order intact.
Therefor these kilns were meticulously protected to preserve the ware’s exclusivity and the techniques employed were kept secret. Also Nabeshima ware could not be bought but only obtained as gifts by the lord himself, which meant that the ownership of these ceramics were a clear indication of class.
Many attempts to copy this type of porcelain were made, but without success.
And as it was produced for Japanese high society the aesthetics were rather different to the products aimed at the European market. Thereby it is often said that Nabeshima ware captures a specifically Japanese taste- the taste of the status quo that is.
The Iris
In similarity to the Art Academies established in Europe in this time the Tokugawa Shogunate nourished a court aesthetic and supported traditional art schools as the Kano school of painting, that engaged with motifs from nature or classical literature in a Zen aesthetic (the state religion). Thus naturally Nabeshima ware was ornamented with similar motifs.
One of the most famous depictions of Irises from the Edo period is a Korin screen Irises at Yatsuhashi (Eight bridges). The work, in ink and gold leaf, depicts a scene from the classical epic The Tales of Ise.
More specifically it refers to the poem cited at the beginning of this podcast. After having been exiled from Kyoto after an affair with a courtly lady the protagonist of the story stops at the eight bridges of Yatsuhashi and the irises inspire him to write the love poem.
Possibly the artist behind this plate also had this literary reference in mind when decorating it. Hence in order to appreciate the design of the plate fully an aesthetic and cultural education was needed, again subtly asserting the plate as a status symbol.
L’Art de la Table
Unlike European dinner services that come in sets the philosophy of traditional Japanese dining functions according to a different system of aesthetics where each plate is designed to accompany the food but also to contribute to complete aesthetic sensation. Furthermore this plate also demonstrates, that unlike in Western society, art and functionality were interlinked in Japan at this point in time.
As the plate belonged to an aristocratic household it is likely that it was served according to the tradition of Honzen-ryōri, which was a form of stylized and rather strict form of dining that developed during the 16th century.
Most often each guest would receive three trays served simultaneously. The main tray was placed directly in front of the guest, the second to right and the third to the left. Each tray had contained a soup, served in a lacquer bowl, placed in the right hand corner. Only the main tray contained a bowl of rice that was placed in the left hand corner. In addition to this each tray contained a number of side dishes. This plate would have contained one of these side dishes, such as a pickled salad or sashimi.
The dinnerware used also varied depending on season, and since this plate is ornamented with an Iris it can be assumed that it was used during spring or summer.
Conclusion
In conclusion the meanings of this object are multifaceted. Not only does it evoke a poetic sensation on a visual level by the impression its beauty renders. But it also tells the story of a society with an anxious ruling class in which this plate was one of many cultural status markers. It epitomises an extreme form of luxury only accessible to a tranche of society who were granted their status not by wealth but by lineage and education. Lastly it is a remaining piece of a today abandoned dining tradition, whose refinement would have put the court etiquette at Versailles to shame.
