Faith Alone
And certain men which came down from Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye cannot be saved. (Acts 15:1 KJV)
For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; That ye abstain from meats offered to idols, and from blood, and from things strangled, and from fornication: from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.
(Acts 15:28-29 KJV)
This is such a vital chapter for us to study. I mean really in depth study as to what the apostles were actually saying. But also what they were responding to.
Firstly, scripture or God's revelation is progressive. Noah had a glimpse of the Gospel, Abraham had a little more insight, David had far more. But the practices were also progressive.Revelation of various covenants is also progressive.
Covenant of circumcision was given through Abraham. Moses confirmed the covenant, and added the covenant between God and Israel. These men that had gone out from Judaea was not going back to Moses, they went back to Abraham.
I would love to have been a fly on the wall at the Jerusalem Council. I can imagine the debate being rather fierce. I can imagine the shock on some realizing that the old covenants were no longer in effect. I can imagine that the penny would drop more slowly for some than for others.
I find the letter and the conclusion that the apostles arrived at to be most enlightening. It does in a way, lay the foundation for much of Paul's letters. Others too, but mostly Paul. It in no way contradicts what the apostles had been teaching up to now, namely Repent and Believe.
The fact is that the apostles completely ignored the law of Moses including the sign of the covenant (Sabbath), they ignored the covenant with Abraham as well as the sign (circumcision), what covenants are left? Noah and Adam. Adam doesn't really matter in this discussion, however, when we read what was said to Noah, we certainly hear echoes in what the apostles wrote in their letter. The details can be found in Genesis 9:
1) Not to eat blood.
2) Sign is the rainbow,
3) Whoever kills a human must be put to death.
The other pieces of this letter can be derived from this covenant:
1) eating meats sacrificed to idols - eliminates idolatry.
2) Things blood and things strangled. A strangled animal still has it's blood within.
3) Fornicaton - may be the odd one out, until we see why God sent the flood. Sexual sin was rife as was idolatry.
The apostles knew that the law saved no one. The best it did was point out that we are sinners.
Today, we have people being far more subtle than that. They start off using Hebrew names for Biblical characters. Forgetting that vowels were only added much later, so exact pronunciation may not be exactly as the vowels suggest. This may be the reason why Jesus' Hebrew name is spelled with so many varieties.
They do not end there, then they insist on sabbath keeping and keeping of the Jewish feasts. None of which we have been commanded to keep. I have yet to hear people needing to be circumcised, but I am sure this is not far off.
The Gospel since Jesus taught it has not changed. Repent and believe, get baptized. Baptism being a witness to others of your faith, which lines up with Romans 10:9 "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."
Two Ways to Live? Are you a follower of Christ and of Moses? You really should choose only one. You cannot be under both law and grace. But be warned, if you want to save yourself through keeping the law, you must do so perfectly, from birth to natural death. Believe on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved.
Father, thank you for your word. Thank you that you have done everything to ensure that we can be saved. I pray for any here who may be caught up in one of the false cults that teach salvation by works, I pray they may see the glorious truth of the Gospel that we are saved by faith alone.

Remembering God's Promises: A Lifeline of Hope
God's memory is often described as being focused on His promises and covenants with humanity. This divine aspect of remembrance serves as a vital encouragement for believers, reminding them that they too should hold onto these promises in their own lives. In a world filled with uncertainty and change, the notion that God remembers His commitments to us can bring immense comfort and hope. This article dives into the importance of God’s promises and how they can shape our lives, making faith a source of strength.
Throughout the Bible, we find numerous examples of God making promises. From the covenant He made with Noah, promising never to flood the earth again, to His promise to Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars, these commitments serve as powerful reminders of God’s faithfulness. Each story illustrates how God’s promises are not just words; they are the foundation of His relationship with humanity. When we reflect on these covenants, we understand that God wants us to have confidence in His plans for us, despite any adversities we may face.
One of the most famous promises found in the scriptures is expressed in Jeremiah 29:11, where God declares, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This verse stands out as a beacon of light for many believers today. It reminds us that God has a purpose for our lives and a desire to see us flourish. In times of doubt and struggle, recalling this promise can inspire us to keep moving forward and trust in God’s overarching plan.
Moreover, the act of remembering God’s promises is not a one-time event. It is a continuous journey that requires mindfulness and commitment. Practicing gratitude and reflection can help us acknowledge and celebrate times when we have experienced God’s faithfulness in our lives. Keeping a journal, sharing stories with friends, or even creating a vision board can each serve as tools for reinforcing our faith in God’s promises. When we actively engage in remembering, we create a stronger foundation upon which to build our lives.
However, it’s important to remember that life will not always be easy. Challenges will arise, and at times, it may seem as though God’s promises are far from reality. During these moments, it is useful to lean on our faith and the community around us. Surrounding ourselves with supportive friends and mentors can help us navigate hardships, reminding us that we are not alone. In addition, prayer can be a powerful way to reconnect with God and seek clarity during difficult times.
In conclusion, God’s memory of His promises invites us to foster a deeper connection with Him. As we navigate life’s challenges, we can draw strength from the knowledge that He remains committed to guiding us. By actively remembering and holding onto these promises, we position ourselves to experience hope and renewal. We encourage you to take a moment to reflect on how God's promises have influenced your life. Consider writing them down or sharing your experiences with others. Challenge yourself to trust in these promises more deeply and watch how faith can transform your perspective.
