Imaginary (2024)
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
Imaginary works only enough to make you understand why we keep getting movies with this premise every few years. It’s not scary or innovative enough to make a lasting impression, practically guaranteeing that you’ll forget it in no time.
Jessica (DeWanda Wise) and her new husband, Max (Tom Payne), move into her childhood home with his two daughters. There, young Alice (Pyper Braun) finds a teddy bear she names Chauncey. Soon, the two are inseparable and Alice starts telling wild stories about her new best friend. When Chauncey starts "asking" her to do bad things, Jessica wonders if the imaginary friend is more than imaginary.
From the premise, I bet you can deduce a lot of what this movie has to offer. Director Jeff Wadlow (who co-writes with Greg Erb and Jason Oremland) spells it out from the first couple of scenes. Jessica has recurring nightmares of being chased by a spider-like monster while her now mentally ill father, Ben (Samuel Salary) tries to protect her. These nightmares are set in her childhood home (a home she hasn't lived in for years) and in them, she appears as a child. Hmm. I wonder. While Jessica gets along fairly well with Alice, she’s constantly butting heads with her older stepdaughter, Taylor (Taegen Burns). It’s obviously so Alice can be taken away at one point, forcing her sister and stepmother to set aside their differences and come to her rescue. Imaginary clocks in at 104 minutes. That’s way too long for a movie whose first half is dedicated to slowly revealing that, indeed, Chauncey is sinister.
There’s a point about halfway through when Jessica brings Alice’s therapist (Verónica Falcón) into their home. There’s a twist about Chauncey that’s actually clever and pretty shocking. Now, the movie feels like it’s picking up, and it does… but silly moments, visuals and/or twists bring it right back down. For instance:
Chauncey has a monstrous form and it’s introduced in an effective scene. Taylor is alone in a room with a spinning night light that plays Chauncey’s jingle (a nice little piece by Bear McCreary). The light moving across the walls is in the shape of a bear. There’s a matching shape on the wall facing Taylor. The two will line up at any second. You know something bad will happen then. There’s genuine suspense that’s undone when we actually see Chauncey's grotesque appearance. I wont necessarily call the monster design bad but all I could think of when I saw it was "What if we crossed the creature from Cellar Dweller and the Muppet Sweetums?".
There are nightmare versions of several characters at key points during the second half. Their designs are scary in concept but in execution, they just look silly. Coraline did it better.
Finally, there's Betty Buckley as Gloria, Jessica’s neighbor and former babysitter. At first, you think she’s only there to reveal something obvious about Jessica’s childhood but she’s got a bigger part to play in the story and in the end, it doesn’t make much sense.
After Alice mysteriously disappears, Jessica and Taylor learn that it was Chauncey's doing. The imaginary friend had Alice collect various objects to perform a ritual. The ritual opens a door to the Never Ever, Chauncey’s realm. They don't see it happen. They learn what happened from Gloria, who also gives a detailed explanation of what Chauncey is, what it wants and examples of it (or creatures like it) appearing throughout history. The explanation is unnecessary and there had to be a better way for Jessica to find out what happened but if Gloria wasn’t included, the film couldn’t have this lame twist that comes later on. Once she, Jessica and Taylor enter the Never Ever, Gloria reveals that she’s been conspiring with Chauncey and closes their exit so the three of them - and Alice - can stay in the Never Ever forever. Moments later, Chauncey devours her. If something needed to be trimmed, this was it.
Imaginary contains as many clever twists as it does groan-worthy ones. The premise has been done before but this take on it contains new ideas that could’ve carried it over the finish line if it was scarier. Alternatively, it could’ve been shorter by ditching some of the eye-rolling revelations or overcomplicated lore. I like the last scene, I like some of the musical beats and it’s got some clever moments but they don’t make the film worth your time, not when there’s another movie just like this one coming in a couple of years. Horror Movie Review: Imaginary (2024)
Blumhouse sure are spitting them out now, aren’t they? Which, as anyone knows, means diminishing results and while Imaginary isn’t a terrible film by any stretch, it is sorely lacking in imagination. It’s the epitome of dull and uninspired horror.

Levanta
- Veronica Payne

Do you have a ludography for Eureka? If so, what games are on it?
Yes we very much do! Here it is, straight from the rulebook.
Inspirations
Though Eureka is an original TTRPG built from the ground up to suit the particular needs of our vision, that doesn’t mean we don’t stand upon the shoulders of giants. Below is some media that either served as inspiration for Eureka, or could at least serve as some inspiration to you for what sort of stories Eureka is best at telling.
TV & Movies
Being Human
The Big Sleep (1946)
Columbo
Doctor Who
Friday the 13th
Halloween
Hard Boiled (1992)
James Bond
Knives Out/Glass Onion
Kolchak: The Nightstalker
Laura (1944)
The Maltese Falcon (1941)
Midsummer Murders
Murder, She Wrote
Scooby-Doo
Scream (1996)
The Third Man (1949)
Twin Peaks
Veronica Mars
What We Do in the Shadows
The X-Files
Video Games
Disco Elysium
Blood (1997)
DUSK
Gabriel Knight
Hitman
Hotline Miami
L.A. Noire

Tomb Raider
Books & Comics
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Dick Tracy
Harrow County
Metro 2033
The works of Agatha Christie
The works of H.P. Lovecraft
Tabletop Games
Call of Cthulhu
Delta Green
Monster of the Week
Warhammer 40,000[1]
Advanced D&D, 2nd edition[2]
[1 sidebar] Warhammer 40,000 may seem like an odd pick, but it actually loosely inspired parts of the combat system of Eureka, like how it makes many inaccurate shots better than one highly accurate shot. It also lends Eureka the idea of providing bullet point summaries after each section. The “Command Point” mechanic in more recent editions of Warhammer 40,000 also served as some inspiration for the Eureka! Point mechanic in Eureka.
[2 sidebar] Meanwhile, AD&D 2nd edition, unlike D&D post-3rd-edition, is a game that is focused on travel and surviving a dungeon more so than fighting and killing everything in it. Despite that, the game has mechanically complex combat rules, and Eureka also does for similar reasons - if combat is going to be dangerous, it also needs to be deep and tactical.
