In winter it's a marshmallow world
This story was written for the LoVe Gift Exchange for @nicemom93
It was incredibly nerve-wracking to write for you because your stories are always perfection. But I hope you enjoy it!
It is Part One of the (hopefully) three-part story titled In Winter, It’s A Marshmallow World (based on the Christmas song A Marshmallow World).
ao3 link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/22021237
Veronica scanned the flight information board for the third time since sitting down in the gate waiting area. Rolling her neck and shoulders to ease the building tension, she relaxed into her seat and closed her eyes. There was an hour to go before her flight to Neptune. As bored as she was, she was grateful this was a connecting flight and she didn’t have to go through security again.
The security at JFK had been a nightmare. Literally, a nightmare. Nothing like fighting through thousands of rushed, angry, screaming people to get you into the holiday spirit. She didn’t like crowds on the best of days, but the holidays were infinitely worse.
She wouldn’t even be here if her dad hadn’t bought her tickets without actually asking her first. Her initial reaction was disappointment. The allure of an empty campus and the library to herself, so she could study without distraction, was nigh irresistible. But when she heard the excitement in her dad’s voice after he told her his plan, she changed her mind. If it made him happy… well, she was all about making him happy these days, why not add this to the list.
Logan couldn’t believe he was going back to Neptune again. Dick all but begged him. Logan had declined, initially. But he hadn’t seen Dick in almost a year and so here he was, struggling his way through the airport crowds to catch a last-minute flight back to Neptune.
He made it to his gate just before the first call to board. A personal worst. I’m never traveling this close to a holiday again.
Scanning the crowd reflexively, his eyes caught on a shade of blond hair he’d never forget. He thought he must be seeing things, willing into reality what he’d had so many fantasies about. It’s never been her before.
He turned away, looking for an open seat, but his eyes kept drawing back to the blond. The curve of her neck, she shape of her shoulders - it felt so familiar and he couldn’t look away.
He stepped towards her involuntarily, desperate to know for sure, then shook his head and turned away. Get a hold of yourself and stop acting like a hormonal teenager. Whoever that is doesn’t need you being creepy. Then he heard her sigh and watched her stretch her arms over her head.
It wasn’t a fantasy, it wasn’t another case of mistaken identity, she was here. Veronica. The name alone was reserved only for his dreams. Until now.
Rubbing the back of his neck and adjusting his carry-on back to his shoulder, he debated what to do. Should I approach her? Leave her alone? It had been so long. Perhaps she wouldn’t appreciate seeing him as much as he was desperate to see her.
The call for priority boarding shook him out of the anxiety-driven haze he’d been caught in, and he realized it was now or never. If he didn’t at least try, he’d regret losing this chance forever. Five years is a long time, maybe long enough that she’ll have softened towards me.
_______________________________________________________________
The din of airport noise stirred Veronica from her half-slumber. Ignoring the call for priority boarding, she rubbed her eyes to dispel the last of her sleepiness.
“Veronica?”
She froze and didn’t dare look up. She had to be imagining it, that voice. She’d heard he joined the Navy, surely he couldn’t really be here. But the light hand on her shoulder, followed by another-
“Veronica?”
-told her she hadn’t imagined anything. Now if only she could get herself to look him in the eye. Cowboy up, Mars. It’s not like you haven’t been dreaming about this exact moment for years. She didn’t realize how long she’d been silently still until the hand left her shoulder and that voice, soft as a whisper, said:
“Sorry, I thought you might not want to see me. I’ll leave you alone.”
“No!” She found the strength to move, flipping around and reaching for his retreating hand. The tightness in her chest and throat released only when he stopped and looked back, hand clasped in hers.
“Logan,” she managed to breathe out.
His trademark smirk flashed across his face before settling into the most beautiful, genuine smile she’d ever seen. God, I thought I imagined how good he looks and here he is, aged like a fine wine.
They stared at each other far too long, hands still linked until the next boarding call broke them both from the trance they were under. Their hands fell, Veronica’s to her lap and Logan’s to his side.
Veronica managed words first. “What are you doing here? Are you on this flight?”
“Yeah,” Logan affirmed. “It’s my first holiday not stuck in a tin can, and Dick practically promised me his firstborn if I spend it with him.”
“I’m not sure that’s such a good deal for you.”
“Well… you take what you can get.”
“So.” She hated the stilted awkwardness overshadowing their conversation and tried to break the ice, so to speak. “You were coerced into holiday celebrations too, huh?”
“I take it returning to Neptune wasn’t your idea?”
Veronica returned his knowing smile. “All my dad. He booked the flight without even asking. So I really couldn’t say no.”
“You’ll have to thank him for me.”
The conversation stalled. Veronica was a little unsure of what to say, or where she stood with Logan. Just say something. Ask him about the Navy!
“So, the Navy...”
It was still hard to wrap her mind around Navy Logan. She’d heard, of course, but she’d always struggled to envision it.
Logan hesitated a moment, eyes boring into hers with an intensity that made her want to avert her eyes. Don’t you dare look away, Mars.
“Yeah, it’s been a lifesaver. Gives me a direction when I was pretty adrift before.”
Veronica swallowed the guilt, responding with all the enthusiasm she could muster, “That’s great!”
He probably saw right through her. He always had before. But she kept the facade up, willing him not to look too close and realize how responsible she felt for his feeling lost. For feeling like he needed something to save him.
He broke her out of her guilt-spiral.
“So, where are you sitting?”
Veronica realized how empty the gate seating had become. Shit. How did I not notice that? Luckily, there was still a bit of a line waiting to board so their chance meeting wasn’t holding up the flight.
“Uhm, C34.”
“Window seat, huh?”
“My dad knows me well.”
“Well, hey what if…” he trailed off a moment, scrunching up his face. “I could upgrade you.”
He spoke so fast he nearly stumbled over the words and it took a couple seconds for Veronica to register what he said.
“Upgrade my seat?”
“Yeah. I could get you in first class. We can keep catching up.”
Veronica wanted to say yes. She wanted so badly to say yes and spend the next hour and a half getting to know Logan as he was now. God, do I want to say yes. But, though she’d done a lot of work on herself and truly tried to be more open and willing to ask for help, she still couldn’t handle feeling like a charity case.
“I can’t let you do that.”
“Is it really you letting me when I offered? I’m glad to do it.”
“Thank you, Logan, really.” She shook her head. Why am I saying no, again? Oh, yeah. Pride. As mad at herself as she was for passing up a first-class upgrade with Logan as her companion, she couldn’t accept the offer. “But I can’t.”
Rather than getting upset, which was what she was expecting, Logan smiled slightly. “I thought you might say that. Well, another time then?”
“Final boarding, flight D224 non-stop to Neptune.”
“I think that means us.” Veronica stood as she spoke, draping her bag over her shoulder. “But yes, definitely. Another time.”
Logan followed her to the gate and down into the plane. As they stepped up into the narrow hall, Veronica realized it might be years before she saw him again. She stopped just before showing her boarding pass to the flight attendant and made an awkward turn in the cramped passage.
“It was great to see you again, Logan.” She stood on her tiptoes and threw her arms around his neck, clinging to him like she wanted to cling to this moment. “I’ve missed you,” she whispered. Dropping her arms, she gave a mock salute. “Catch you later, sailor.”
________________________________________________________________
Logan hadn’t felt this unsteady in years. The therapy and coping techniques he learned were supposed to keep him from feeling like this again. But he wasn’t too surprised. Veronica always had a way of destabilizing him.
“Boarding pass?”
The flight attendant’s clipped tone told Logan he’d missed the first, and probably the second, time she asked. He moved to hand it over when he had an idea.
“I’m in first class,” he told the attendant. “But that woman I walked on with? She’s an old friend. I’d like to see if the person sitting next to her wants to take my first class seat so I can sit with her.”
The raised eyebrow of the attendant betrayed her suspicion. “You want to downgrade to economy? Why don’t you just upgrade her?”
“I already offered,” Logan sighed. “But she declined.”
“She declined?” Her piercing stare made him feel he was being judged. “Well, maybe that means she doesn’t want to sit with you.”
Logan sighed out his frustration. “Did the hug she gave me look like she was dying to get away from me?” He took another anger-expelling breath. “Can you just go ask the person sitting next to her if he or she would like to upgrade?”
“I guess.” The attendant didn’t manage to hide her skepticism.
“She’s in seat C34,” he called to her retreating form.
Logan tapped his feet, leaning against the flight attendant seat while he waited. He’d run through five relaxation techniques before the flight attendant returned, a greasy old man following close behind.
“This is the gentlemen,” the inflection on the word said she thought Logan was anything but, “who would like to trade seats with you.”
“Trade to first class?” The man looked to Logan, a hint of understanding in his eyes. “I never could resist a blond, either.”
“She’s an old friend,” he said back, voice stoney. All the therapy tools in the world would never get him to feel less protective of Veronica. “So, you’re willing to trade?”
“Gladly.” He rubbed his hands together and turned to the flight attendant. “Lead the way.”
The attendant rolled her eyes but turned towards first class. “I’m assuming you know where to go?” she shot back over her shoulder to Logan.
“Yeah, I’ve got it.”
But they had already disappeared through the dividing curtain. Logan made his way to row 34, near the back of the plane. He spotted Veronica staring out her window and smiled at the sight. Five years. It changed nothing and everything.
“Excuse me.” He slipped past a girl, who looked barely old enough to fly on her own, sitting on the aisle seat.
He’d settled in his seat before he felt Veronica’s eyes on him. He waited for the confrontation he knew was coming.
“What are you doing back here?”
His eyes widened then he frowned slightly. “What, you disappointed? That guy I traded seats with did look like excellent company.” He broke into a grin, unable to hold the ruse any longer. “Though I’m not sure I could pull him away from the luxury of first class to get him back for you.”
“Aww,” Veronica replied in her trademark Amber voice. “You remembered how much I love sleazy old guys!”
He chuckled, taking satisfaction as she played along with him.
“For real, though. You traded seats? Did you at least get a refund?”
Logan scoffed. “Of course not. Do you think Mr. Grease was going to fork over the seven hundred dollar difference between his seat and mine?”
“Losing seven hundred dollars just to sit by me? If I didn’t know better I’d think you have a crush on me.”
Her fluttering lashes, her lightly flushed cheeks, her teasing smile. It was all he could do to not kiss her right there. He shook his head slightly at the ridiculousness of that thought.
“So you’re not denying it?”
Veronica snapped him back to the present. He couldn’t remember the last time he was so scattered. He’d need a double session with his therapist to help him unravel his jumble of emotions.
“Sorry,” he quipped. “That’s classified information. Top secret. You have to have special clearance to access it.”
“And how does one get this special clearance?”
Is she flirting? This feels like flirting. But he had a tendency to see what he wanted to see when it came to Veronica; he’d have to wait for something more concrete before making any assumptions.
“That is also classified.”
“Then how does anyone get clearance?”
“You don’t get clearance, clearance gets you.”
Veronica laughed and his whole body felt light and warm. He missed this so much, having someone to banter with, someone to understand him in a way no one else could.
He and Veronica continued chatting about everything small and unimportant. Though the conversation paused as Veronica prepared for take-off. She clutched the armrests tightly until the plane leveled out.
After a few minutes of neither of them knowing what to say, Veronica broke the silence.
“So,” the trepidation in her voice was overt. “Direction from the Navy? How’d that come about.”
Chuckling at her not-so-subtle dig for information, Logan took a moment to consider what she was really asking him: What changed you so much that you joined the military? The answer was too heavy for a first reunion plane ride. The diluted version will have to do.
He pulled his hand from the armrest and rubbed the back of his neck. Three years in the Navy wasn’t enough to purge him of this particular nervous habit.
“You remember what I was like our first year of college?” He started off simple, trying to ease into what would be a difficult conversation, watered-down or not.
“Brooding? Tortured? Drifting?” Her soft shoulder bump, and all the time he put into building his confidence in himself, took the sting from her assessment.
“Basically. All of the above.”
“Yeah.”
Her eyes glistened ever so slightly and he had to look away. I don’t want her reading me like I am her. Not yet.
“Well,” he cleared his throat. “You can only drift for so long before you get lost. The Navy was like a life raft for me. It came unexpectedly, but when I needed it most. And it’s no exaggeration to say the Navy literally saved me, mostly from myself.”
Veronica’s reassuring grip on his arm helped him lift his gaze back to hers. The space between them crackled with an energy that was so familiar, almost like no time had passed at all.
________________________________________________________________
Veronica felt the familiar spark of energy and excitement that always seemed to permeate the air whenever she was within fifty feet of Logan. She realized, much to her delight, in five years nothing had changed. Logan’s ever-pulsing magnetism had only strengthened in their time apart. The difference now? The current warmth cast in stark relief the devoid meaningless of life without him.
And she never wanted to feel that emptiness again.
The realization hit her like a freight train.
You don’t want to live without him… so what are you going to do about it, Veronica?
She knew how she felt, knew what she wanted, but would Logan want the same? Was their turbulent history too much to overcome? Have I pushed him so far I can’t ever get him back?
There were only so many things she could control and guaranteeing Logan would feel the same as her wasn’t one of them. But she could control herself and make sure she did everything possible to try.
Her mind went into overdrive, thinking of how she could make up for the past, how she could convince him she was a safe bet to place. I have to show him how much I’ve grown.
Veronica hoped Logan would see and appreciate her resolve and progress. She had a feeling this would be their last chance to make it work.
Logan was still staring, and she was still clutching his arm. He seemed open and vulnerable in a way she’d rarely ever seen. Her heart swelled at the man Logan made of himself.
When Logan offered no further commentary on his life change, Veronica decided it was time to start talking herself up. Nothing like presenting yourself interview-style to show your progress.
“Well.” She pulled her hand back to her lap, giving him her most mischievous smile. “You’ll never guess what I started doing three years ago.”
Her inability to trust had always been a sticking point for Logan. She hoped voluntarily going to therapy would show him she was actively working on it.
Logan rubbed his chin, eyes lifted in mock contemplation. “Mmm, pole dancing? No. Drug smuggling. Or, maybe working as a hitman?”
Veronica laughed as she shook her head. Same old Logan. “Don’t I wish. I could have paid off my bachelor’s degree, my law school debt, and probably had money to spare!”
He leaned closer, one elbow now propped on their shared armrest supporting his head in the classic Toddlers in Tiaras pose. “Well, if it isn’t about money I have to know.”
“Not all of us have had a trust fund from birth,” she scoffed, waving his words away like nagging flies. “Though I’m assuming most of that sits in an investment account while you live off your salary.”
“Right on both counts. But we were talking about you.”
“Were we? I can’t seem to remember now.”
“Oh, I’ll get it out of you, one way or another.”
“Logan,” she mock-scolded in a growling whisper. “We are in a very public setting right now.”
He crinkled his eyes, adopting his brooding look. “Sorry, Bobcat, you make it impossible to resist.”
Veronica’s heart fluttered with excitement. He called me Bobcat. That has to be a good sign, right?
“Okay, okay. If you stop looking at me like a kicked puppy I’ll tell you.” She steadied herself with a deep breath, then blurted out before she could reconsider: “I’ve been going to therapy.”
Logan’s mouth popped open and his eyes went wide. His chin almost slipped from its perch on his hand. Does he believe me? “So… yup. That’s what I’ve been doing.”
“Veronica.” His voice choked with emotion. “That’s really amazing.”
She let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding, unclenching her hands from their death grip.
“I’m really proud of you.”
Her cheeks flushed. He’s proud of me. She didn’t predict how much she longed for his perspective, his approval.
She grinned, hope blossoming. “Thanks.”
“I actually started therapy a few years ago as well.”
She hadn’t been expecting that. Though, it’s not surprising given his history. It might have even been mandated.
“That’s great!” she managed through her shock. “That’s really great. I mean, if therapy was made for anyone, it was probably us.”
He chuckled at her quip, understanding the truth of the words and the need to make it a joke.
“It’s really helped me, anyway.” She settled herself back, half leaning against the side of the plane and halfway still in her seat. “After a year I was able to date without resorting to planting trackers or phone stalking.”
Please understand me. Please realize I’m trying so hard to be open with you. Please understand how much I’ve worked on trust.
Logan lifted one side of his mouth, giving her his classic half-smile and nodded. “It’s been years since I last broke someone’s nose. I’d say we’re both doing pretty good.”
She noticed how he kept himself laid bare, never moving to cross his arms or shy away. Of course, he always wore his emotions on his sleeve.
“We sure are!” She lifted her hand and he chuckled as he reciprocated her high five. “I even went out all on my own and made friends. As in, multiple friends.”
See? I’m not shutting everyone out.
“I’m impressed. Bobcat of old was always more of an ice queen.”
“I guess I’ve thawed out a little. I even told my dad and Wallace all about therapy, and making friends, and what I’m hoping for the future.”
I can’t be blamed if my future plans have changed a little since we last talked. The universe obviously wants us together. There is no other explanation.
“That’s really great, Veronica. I’m really happy for you.”
She reached towards him, ready to share the sentiment, when one of the flight attendants announced their impending landing and the need to, “Make sure your tray tables and electronics are stowed away and fasten your seatbelts.”
Perfect timing, as always. She huffed and rolled her eyes, even though she knew it wouldn’t matter. Not to the pilots and definitely not to the universe. I just hope I told him enough.
She positioned herself back into the proper seating position and snapped on her buckle. Logan followed suit, casting glances at her every few seconds.
“The plane hasn’t landed yet, Logan. I’m not going to evaporate.”
She offered a knowing smile and fidgeted to get more comfortable in the seat. Twenty minutes to prepare for landing and then it would be over in a second.
This time, as they went in for landing, Logan reached over and squeezed her hand. Thank you, Logan. You always know exactly what I need. She gripped his fingers tightly.
Deboarding and luggage collecting passed in a haze of “I’m so glad to see you again” and “we have to meet up while we’re both in town” and crowded hallways and the ever-present airport noise.
They were past the gate, moving towards the arrivals before she thought to ask how long he would be around. He was due to fly back in a week, just before New Year’s. She wouldn’t be leaving until closer to the start of her next semester, mid-January.
Spotting her dad in the crowd, and unfortunately Dick who stuck out like a sore thumb, Veronica turned back to Logan. If ever there was a time for you to read my mind, it would be now. She repeated her quick hug from earlier but caught and held his gaze as she pulled away.
“It was really good to see you, Logan.”
________________________________________________________________
Logan stared after Veronica, watching as she greeted her dad and then she was gone.
Pinpointing how he was feeling wasn’t possible. The short two hours since he’d reconnected with Veronica were more emotional than he’d experienced in years. But he did have one prominent, crushing thought: She’s doing good, really really good. Without me.
He never imagined Veronica would voluntarily go to therapy. Of anyone he knew, she was one of the last he would have pegged to go. Though he supposed the same could be said for him. She seemed to be flourishing away from Neptune. Away from him.
Logan was pulled from his ruminations by a shake to the shoulder.
“Dude, was that Ronnie?” Sarcasm and surprise warred in Dick’s voice.
Still recovering from the whirlwind that was Veronica Mars, Logan barely managed a “yeah” in reply.
Dick was more astute than most gave him credit for and let the subject go while they made their way to his beachfront bungalow. Though he couldn’t help but mention the multiple parties with very available women that he planned for them to attend during Logan’s visit.
Logan gave noncommittal responses; not saying no, but also showing no enthusiasm. And Dick kept up his pestering until, settled in his room, Logan had enough.
“Hey man, thanks for the ride and the invite. I’m exhausted from traveling, so we can talk more tomorrow, yeah?”
“Yeah, dude. Sleep, so we can party hardy tomorrow.” He exited the room with a hip thrust.
Sighing at the conversation he knew was going to have to happen in the morning, Logan readied himself for bed and settled himself on the soft, silky sheets.
Veronica is doing great. She got away from Neptune… and me… and now she’s doing better than ever.
He rubbed his palms into his eyes, dispelling the dew gathering there. If Veronica was better off without him, he would let her go. He had hoped… but it didn’t matter. What was best for her, that’s what mattered. And maybe we can still be friends. I can keep her in my life, even if it isn’t the way I want.
He drifted into a fitful sleep, thoughts of Veronica and what was and what might have been plaguing his dreams.

6, 7, and 13?
from this meme
6. Name three stories you found easy to write.
Oh, L. I don’t think there will ever be a story I’ll find easy to write because agonizing is sort of my brand, writing-wise. These three were not as painful to put together as the others, local anesthesia as opposed to general. This is a bad comparison, but you get where I’m going with this.
We Must Refuse to Disappear (The Handmaid’s Tale) - I read The Handmaid’s Tale, watched the show, read several volumes of Atwood’s poetry and then tried to do something that blended all those things. I took to June’s voice pretty smoothly.
Unheard Music (Veronica Mars) - the hardest thing about this fic (written for a holiday exchange as a gift to the lovely @nightlocktime) was just making sense of the Veronica Mars timeline which, if you write fic for the show you soon find out is a fuzzy concept. I had invaluable help from @bryrosea and together we discovered that these kids were in school on the weekend as well as evenings because time doesn’t exist on that show. Not as we know it. The rest though, came together pretty quickly.
but everything must be dared (Call Me By Your Name) - the genderswapped Call Me By Your Name fic no living soul asked for has been a joy to write so far perhaps because it is just a fun project I’m writing for myself. I’ve put it on a short pause so I can wrap up fic series in the same fandom but it will return, hopefully breezily, very soon.
7. Name three stories you found difficult to write and 13. Name three favorite characters to write answered here.
Thank you for the ask, @theawkwardterrier!

A Storm We're Meant To Ride
by casket4mytears
It’s just a piece of paper… or is it? A moment of clarity and advice from one of her oldest friends has Veronica reconsidering her stance on marriage. An upcoming and long overdue vacation in a private beach villa with Logan is the perfect chance to discuss taking the plunge. The universe, however, has a wicked sense of humor... and perhaps an invaluable lesson for LoVe to learn first.
Canon compliant through movie/books – I acknowledge no events beyond them except a few borrowed trinkets. HEA guaranteed (this is true LoVe – you think this happens every day?)
Rated T for light swearing and sensuality. A 2019 Holiday Fic Exchange gift in 3 parts for the dynamic duo of CubbieGirl1723 & MarshmellowBobcat, both of whom I adore.

Merry Friggin’ Christmas
Happy December everyone and do you know what that means? It is time for the annual Christmas blog entry here. This year I am covering a 2014 film I discovered via snail mail Netflix a couple years ago that I enjoyed so much I tracked down the BluRay online and busted it out again this fine yuletide season. I am covering 2014’s Merry Friggin’ Christmas (trailer) which will also go down as one of Robin Williams’ final films as it released a few months after his tragic passing. Boyd (Joel McHale) wants to keep the spirit of Christmas alive in his family and wants just one last Christmas season for his son to maintain his innocent youthful love of believing in Santa. His Christmas cheer is challenged to new heights when his brother Nelson (Clark Duke) invites him back home to the family for Christmas in time for his son’s baptism. Boyd dreads the trip there because he has kept a distant relationship with his father, Virgil (Robin Williams) and the two waste no time at squabbling away throughout Christmas Eve but must put their differences aside when Boyd realizes he forgot his son’s presents back home a few hours away and now must do an all-night overnight drive to get back in time Christmas morning with the precious cargo.
I immediately fell in love with this film for telling the dysfunctional family story of trying to get everyone under one roof, rivalries and everything, all in the name of Christmas. I identified with many elements in Merry Friggin’ Christmas for having the chaotic family holidays and throughout it I could not help but resonate with many themes for parents going out of their way to make sure their children get their ‘Santa’ gift. In my GameBoy retrospective earlier this year I lamented how I accidentally broke my GameBoy a few days after getting it for Christmas and how my folks did not have to, but they went above and beyond and bought another GameBoy despite my 10-year old goofball mistake. Merry Friggin’ Christmas has plenty of entertaining bickering throughout with all members of the family. Even when Boyd and his father have to drive back home to get Boyd’s gifts for his son the two do not skip a beat at taking potshots at each other. There are some fleeting moments of hope after a kind exchange with Boyd and his dad while taking a pit stop at the gas station, but quicker than a bathroom break they are right back breathing down each other’s necks. Eventually Nelson gets in the mix too, and I have to admit until this film I was never a huge fan of Clark Duke, but the way he was written and how Duke pulled off Nelson’s bouts of PTSD acting up whenever the family succumbed to discourse resulted in Clark winning me over! Bravo to Phil Johnston for the wonderful script! There were a few clips I wanted to link to throughout this entry, but the only clip I can find on YouTube is Nelson phoning home during the road trip in not-so-desirable quality, so enjoy!
Throughout Boyd & Virgil’s drive there are a couple other subplots with the rest of the family back home. Both Boyd & Virgil’s wives (Candice Bergen & Lauren Graham) spend the night worrying about their spouses until progressively drinking their troubles away reminiscing about the past. I found this angle both hilarious and worrisome because Merry Friggin’ Christmas points out several times Virgil’s past problems with alcoholi-ism. Another alcohol related theme throughout the movie that has a delightful payoff was how Virgil encouraged his grandkids to leave Bourbon out for Santa instead of milk. The grandkids have their own subplot too getting into all kinds of mischief in the wee hours of the night with the highlight being trippy nightmares from eating a whole jar of pickles canned in 1973. There are not that many extras on the BluRay, though that may be due to a third party Amazon seller not disclosing they were selling the Canadian version to me that does not even have subtitles. It does however have nearly a half hour of cast interviews going over the bullet points of the film with a lot of them also agreeing with the natural family discourse that transpires at Christmas gatherings. The highlight of the interviews though is when McHale & Williams are both interviewed and go on a five minute spontaneous improve bit mixing in their one-of-a-kind comedy while somehow keeping it related to hyping up the film.
This re-watch marked the first time mixing in Merry Friggin’ Christmas in my rotation of Christmas movie to watch during the season. It is a bittersweet watch knowing it is one of Williams’ final films, but also simultaneously wonderful with Williams still being on top of his game here, especially in some powerful moments where Boyd & Virgil are at their zenith of their bickering and when they eventually reconcile. A few days ago I caught Christmas Vacation at our local theater that will occasionally showcase older films and Merry Friggin’ Christmas is the perfect contemporary take of that film and is essential holiday viewing for everyone! Hello :) I'm back again, your Yousana exchange giftee. I have been pretty busy lately so I am back only now but I hope you're having a good last month of the year, hope you found almost all your presents you want to give (since you had said you weren't that good with it so far). and I just wanted to drop by and ask if there's a movie or a TV show that is your all time favorite or something you can watch over and over again? :)
Hii!
Hope you were busy with good things! :) This last week was tough, but I’m very excited to get back to joining in the Christmas spirit. Today I went with my mom to see the Christmas markets in the city centre and they were crowded but amazing. I did find almost all! All that’s missing is a dishtowel for my friend (she’s moving to her first house and after much pressure from my side as to what she wants as a gift she came up with a dishtowel, bless her lmao) bc I haven’t managed to find one that I really like, but I’m going shopping tomorrow morning so that’ll be fine.
Ooooh, all time faves in movies and TV. Hmmm.
Since it’s xmas season I just HAVE TO start off with Three Wishes for Cinderella/Tři oříšky pro Popelku, because it’s a national treasure, classic of all classics and a must for every Christmas. The best live acting fairytale that exists on this planet. It’s also for some wild reason popular in Norway and seeing our Cinderella on Skam cast ig stories was crazy haha.
But as to my real faves... I really like The Man From U.N.C.L.E., not really sure why exactly. I just really like the kind of humour they use, and tons of other aspects. The first Potter movie is basically a year of my childhood. I like the 2011 Jane Eyre. Easy A is a classic weekend afternoon movie in our household. Oh, and also Stardust. And To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before!
When it comes to TV shows, besides the obvious fave that is Skam, I really really really loved Agent Carter and am and will be forever bitter about the cancellation. Growing up me and my mom religiously watched Gilmore Girls (but please please please don’t get me started on the revival miniseries, ewh). I also really like Buffy and the Angel spinoff. Veronica Mars is also incredible. I (not regularly) watch The Mentalist whenever there are reruns on TV. I liked Daredevil the most out of the Marvel x Netflix series, but I can’t say I really rewatched it. I’m sure there’s tons more, but I can’t really think of anything else... well I guess this list is way too long anyway lol.
I hope you have really lovely, warm, peaceful, and happy Holiday season!!
#yousanaexchange#there's a little tradition with my mom and i that we go out and shop a bit for whatever last things we need on the morning of 23rd#which means i'm waking up at six thirty next morning RIP me

A Comprehensive List of Royal Rules Broken by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry
Prince Harry has always been a royal renegade. When he was 17, the red-headed prince was taken to a rehab centre after he admitted he had smoked marijuana and illegally drank alcoholic beverages. When he was 27, TMZ released naked pictures of the royal, who was reportedly playing strip billiards in a Las Vegas hotel suite. For over two decades, Harry has been rewriting the royal rule book — and in the process, became known to the world as the fun and charming prince. (No offence, Will.)
And now, Harry has found the perfect partner-in-crime. With American-actress Meghan Markle on his arm, the British Monarchy is receiving the modern treatment it so desperately needs. From pantyhose to PDA, here are all the times that Prince Harry and the future Her Royal Highness Meghan Markle broke royal protocol:
Meghan’s coat of arms does not include her family name
With the tiara and the title also comes other cool royal perks, like your very own emblem. Now that’s she’s officially a member of the British monarchy, the Duchess of Sussex has received a personalized coat of arms. Traditionally, the symbolic gift usually goes to the father of the bride ahead of the royal wedding—Kate Middleton’s coat of arms not only reflects the Middleton family, but also her mother Carole’s maiden name (Goldsmith). With the newest addition to the family, however, the palace has decided to bestow the honour on only Markle herself.
A Coat of Arms has been created for The Duchess of Sussex: https://t.co/mJb3mqZfaZ pic.twitter.com/0EgbiS29Rb
— Kensington Palace (@KensingtonRoyal) May 25, 2018
The coat of arms, however, does pay homage to Markle’s roots. The custom design includes a blue background (the Pacific Ocean) and two golden rays (sunshine), which Kensington Palace says is representative of the Duchess’ home state of California.
A two ring royal wedding ceremony
Usually, royal men don’t sport wedding bands after they marry. Harry’s grandfather, father and brother have all opted to follow this tradition by not wearing a ring after they wed their respective wives. However, Markle and Harry have chosen to break this tradition, exchanging rings in the ceremony that they will continue to wear. This signifies equality in the marriage and is a modern step for the monarchy.
Meghan starts her bridal procession alone
With the world watching, Meghan Markle will make a striking feminist statement as she walks down the aisle of St. George Chapel. Markle has chosen to walk solo for the beginning portion of her bridal procession, becoming the first royal bride in UK history to walk into their wedding ceremony without a father-figure on their arm.
When she reaches the Quire, she will be joined by Prince Charles, who stepped in to escort his future daughter-in-law after her own father, Thomas Markle, fell ill.
The plan for Markle to begin her wedding walk alone, however, was in place even when her father was scheduled to give her away at the alter. The plan is said to be her own, and the decision shows that she is ready to assert herself as an independent woman prepared to shake up royal norms.
They served lemon elderflower cake at their wedding
The reason why this is a big deal is because they’re forgoing the ‘traditional’ royal wedding cake in order to have this tart, buttercream-covered confection on their big day. What’s the customary royal cake, you ask? Alison McGill, editor in chief of Weddingbells tells us it’s apparently fruitcake.
“Queen Victoria and Prince Albert served the traditional British wedding cake, as have countless royals through the years including Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip, as well as Prince William and Kate Middleton, whose elaborate eight-layer cake was filled with fruitcake!”
Fruitcake has been the cake of choice for upperclass and aristocratic British families for generations, Chris Dodd, pastry chef at London’s Dalloway Terrace, explained to Vogue.
“A fruitcake was originally a symbol of wealth and prosperity because of its precious ingredients such as dried fruits, alcohol, and spices. Furthermore, the cake, in a way, represented the vastness of the British empire, using ingredients from far-flung corners of the globe.”
It may be a royal tradition for various reasons, but if there’s one thing we know about the royal couple, it’s that they don’t shy away from unconventional choices. And who’s the person helping them flout tradition this time? It’s California-born, London-based pastry chef Claire Ptak, who owns a bakery in East London, and has been featured on Markle’s now-defunct lifestyle blog The Tig. Ptak shared the news on her bakery’s Instagram page, adding that she and the couple “share so many of the same values regarding food provenance, sustainability, seasonality and of course, flavour!”
Kensington Palace gave us a few more details, stating on Instagram that “The couple have asked Claire to create a lemon elderflower cake that will incorporate the bright flavours of spring. It will be covered with buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers.” We’ll take that over a fruitcake, any day of the week.
For their wedding cake Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle have chosen pastry chef Claire Ptak, owner of the London-based bakery @violetcakeslondon. The couple have asked Claire to create a lemon elderflower cake that will incorporate the bright flavours of spring. It will be covered with buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers🍰 Claire Ptak, who was raised in California, focuses on using seasonal and organic ingredients in her cakes. Ms. Markle previously interviewed Chef Ptak for her lifestyle website The Tig. Prince Harry and Ms. Markle are looking forward to sharing the cake with guests at their wedding at Windsor Castle on May 19th. 📸PA

Meghan gets political
As a rule, members of the royal family aren’t supposed to make political statements. (This, we can only assume, is why Kate Middleton opted for a green dress for this year’s BAFTAs, rather than wearing a black gown in solidarity with the Time’s Up movement.)
When Markle joined Prince William, Kate Middleton and her fiancé Prince Harry for the first-ever Royal Foundation Forum, she may have broken this protocol by sharing her opinions on the subject of female empowerment.
“I hear a lot of people speaking about girls’ empowerment and women’s empowerment; you will hear people saying they are helping women find their voices. I fundamentally disagree with that because women don’t need to find their voices, they need to be empowered to use it and people need to be urged to listen.” She specifically referenced the current #MeToo and Time’s Up movements as well: “Right now, with so many campaigns like #MeToo and Time’s Up, there’s no better time to continue to shine a light on women feeling empowered and people supporting them.”
Meghan wore a crossbody bag
The princess-to-be arrived at Edinburgh Castle wearing an appropriately chic and seemingly inoffensive outfit: Burberry coat, Veronica Beard pants, Birks rings and a Strathberry bag. But it’s not what Markle was wearing that broke protocol, per se, it was how she was wearing it.
Photography via Max Mumby/Indigo/Getty Images
GASP! A crossbody! What a shockingly common and un-royal — AKA comfortable and practical — way to carry one’s lipgloss and cellphone.
According to royal expert William Hanson, royals always carry a clutch as a means to avoid shaking hands. “It is protocol that you do not extend your hand to any member of the royal family (blood royal or those who have married into the family) unless their hand extends first,” Hanson told the Daily Mail. “The Duchess of Cambridge may well prefer not to shake hands with certain people—but there are other ways to achieve this, as used by the Queen and other members of the royal family, [rather] than opting for a clutch over a bag with a strap.”
Meghan will give her own wedding speech
In the distinguished realm of royal weddings, it’s relatively uncommon for the bride to deliver a speech. The honour of lifting a glass and sharing your thoughts has long been reserved for the groom, the father of the bride, and the best man (AKA, all of the important men in the room.)
But Meghan Markle has never been one to shy away from using her voice. According to The Sunday Times, Markle will be giving a toast at her wedding reception this May, with a source saying that Meghan will pay an “affectionate” tribute to new husband Prince Harry and say thank you to Queen Elizabeth, who is so graciously hosting the celebration at her castle. Harry, of course, gives his full support.
Christmas with the Queen
After weeks of rumours, Kensington Palace has officially confirmed what we all were wishing for: Meghan Markle will be spending Christmas with her prince. Markle’s invitation is, of course, a break from royal tradition, with Markle being not yet being married into the monarchy. But it seems with Prince Harry, rules don’t apply, because a palace spokesperson told AP that “you can expect to see the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry and Ms. Markle at Sandringham on Christmas Day.”
Here’s what’s expected to go down: Markle will attend church with the Windsor family Christmas morning, then she will join the royal’s holiday lunch and and will participate in the family-wide gift exchange. Does this mean Markle has to buy the Queen a present? Will she have to bring a pie for the holiday feast? We have so many questions… And on a side, but very important, note: this is the first time we can expect to see Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle together! (Cue the paparazzi pics.)
Meghan ignored the pantyhose policy
The royal family has an unspoken policy about wearing pantyhose in public. It’s not a style-code that’s set in stone, per say, but it’s a tradition that’s long been upheld by Queen Elizabeth, Kate Middleton and the ruling ladies that came before them.
Photography by Samir Hussein/Samir Hussein/WireImage
Until now! When Meghan Markle stepped out with Prince Harry for their official engagement photocall, the world ogled every inch of the American actress’ outfit. The Internet went wild for Markle’s snow white overcoat by LINE the Label and her opal earrings from Birks, but royal watchers were quick to note the one thing she wasn’t wearing: pantyhose.
They’re tying the knot in May
There’s nothing better than a spring wedding, right? WRONG. It turns out, a marriage in May would not have been approved by the Prince’s great-great-great granny, Queen Victoria. The late, great monarch believed it was unlucky to marry in the fifth month of the calendar year, buying into the superstitious rhyme: “Marry in May, and rue the day.”
Meghan’s been married before
Before hooking up with Harry, Meghan was in a long-term relationship with producer Trevor Engelson. They Hollywood powercouple married in 2011, after seven years of dating, and divorced in August of 2013. Now, Engelson is making a show about a man who has to share custody of his child after his ex-wife marries into the British monarchy. According to Deadline, this is the plot: “Divorce is hard. Sharing custody is harder. Sharing custody with the British Royal family when your wife marries a prince, in the unforgiving spotlight of London’s tabloid media, is next level.” GROSS.

Previously, members of the Royal Family have not been allowed to marry divorcees. As you may recall — from history books, or from season one of The Crown — Princess Margaret had to break off her relationship with Peter Townsend because he was divorced, and Edward VIII abdicated from the throne in order to marry American socialite Wallis Simpson. But it’s not that big of a deal anymore: Prince Harry and Prince William’s father, Prince Charles, married fellow divorcee Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, in a civil ceremony in 2005.
This means that Prince Harry will be the first royal family member to have a church wedding with a divorcee. In 2002, the Church of England agreed that divorced people could remarry in church — with the discretion of the priest, of course. After all, it’s only 2017.
Meghan isn’t Anglican
For centuries, it was forbidden for royals to marry a Roman Catholic. However in 2015, an amendment to the Act of Settlement of 1701 made that allowed British royals to have an interfaith marriage. Markle has never *actually* discussed her religious affiliations openly, though it has been widely reported that her father is Jewish and she attended an all-girls Catholic high school in Los Angeles.
Before her Windsor Castle wedding to Prince Harry, Meghan will be baptized and confirmed in the Church of England. By completing these religious sacraments, Markle honours Queen Elizabeth, who, as the sovereign, holds the title of “Defender of the Faith and Supreme Governor of the Church of England.”
They’re all about the PDA
Okay, so calling a hand-holding PDA is a little extreme. But hey, *technically* it is a public display of affection!

There are no specific anti-PDA rules, but public displays of affection have previously been avoided by the royal family at official events, due to their position as working representatives of the British monarchy. For example: Prince William and Kate Middleton have been photographed holding hands less than a dozen times in the past 10 years (!!!).
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have ignored this unspoken rule at pretty much every opportunity. When they made their first public appearance, the couple shared a smooch. During their joint appearance at Toronto’s Invictus Games, they were photographed holding hands. Even when they stepped out together as an engaged couple, Markle and Harry couldn’t keep their hands off of each other. Not that we’re complaining or anything…more PDA-filled moments please!
Meghan’s Vanity Fair cover
In Vanity Fair’s October cover story, @MeghanMarkle opens up about living in the spotlight, starring on @Suits_USA, and her whirlwind royal romance: “I think it’s really simple. We’re two people who are really happy and in love.” Photograph by @therealpeterlindbergh.

It’s not unprecedented for a royal to grace a magazine cover (after all, Kate Middleton was in British Vogue), but to open up about her private life with Harry pre-engagement was a big shock for royal watchers. Here’s the major takeaway: Prince Harry and Markle are madly in love and they’re not afraid to share it with the world.
“We’re two people who are really happy and in love,” she said. “We were very quietly dating for about six months before it became news, and I was working during that whole time, and the only thing that changed was people’s perception. Nothing about me changed. I’m still the same person that I am, and I’ve never defined myself by my relationship.”
