Technology adapted from NASA’s Mars rover program is being used to develop a hand-held device that will help find and fix natural gas leaks from gas pipelines, with the goal of reducing emissions of greenhouse gases.
In collaboration with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) announced that it is testing state-of-the-art technology adapted from NASA’s Mars rover program. Originally designed to find methane on the Red Planet, this laser-based technology is lightweight and has superior sensitivity to methane, a major component of natural gas. The technology applied back on Earth helps guide PG&E crews using a tablet interface to identify possible leak locations, fast-tracking their ability to repair gas leaks.
“Our pursuit of this technology is evidence of our commitment to our mission of becoming the safest, most reliable utility in the country. We are using out-of-this-woindustrial l2tp cellular routerrld technology to find and fix even the smallest leaks in our system. By investing in innovation today, we are helping build a positive energy future,” said Nick Stavropoulos, PG&E’s executive vice president of gas operations.
On September 29, a new law, SB 1371, required the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to open a proceeding to adopt rules and procedures that minimize natural gas leaks from gas pipelines, with the goal of reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, such as methane.
The hand-held device is the latest piece of advanced leak detection technology being embraced by the utility and is expected to be available for use in 2015. The development of this to IoT Remote Monitoring  ol is part of a collaborative research effort at Pipeline Research Council International (PRCI).
“It’s rewarding to be involved in projects that translate JPL technological capabilities to meet industry needs, technologies which ultimately should help enhance safety and reliability. PG&E’s role as a collaborator with JPL on our PRCI-funded effort is essential to efficiently adapt the JPL methane sensor into a field-ready hand-held leak detection system,” said Andrew Aubrey, JPL technologist.
Pacific Gas and Electric Company, a subsidiary of PG&E Corporation (NYSE:PCG), is one of the largest combined natural gas and electric utilities in the United States. Based in San Francisco, with more than 20,000 employees, the company delivers some of the nation’s cleanest energy to nearly 16 million people in Northern and Central California.

Astronomers Analyze the Di secure  stribution of Globular Clusters
www.inhandnetworks.com
An optical image of the Fornax Cluster of galaxies.
Astronomers from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics have analyzed the distribution of over eighty thousand globular clusters to infer an active history of galaxy-galaxy interactions.
Glo industrial LTE router  bular clusters are gravitationally bound, roughly spherical ensembles of stars. Some contain as many as a million stars, and their sizes are as small as only tens of light-years in diameter. Globular clusters are typically located in the outer regions (the halos) of galaxies, and our Milky Way galaxy has about two hundred of them. Astronomers are interested in globular clusters in part because they are home to many of the oldest known stars, but also because of their locations in the halos.
Collisions between galaxies are commonplace, and the locations of globular clusters can offer evidence of these encounters because they are strongly affected by such interactions. During a collision, a galaxy can grow by absorbing or merging with its neighbor, and some models even predict that clusters form during these interactions. Moreover, it is possible that in a merger large numbers of globular clusters originally belonging to a smaller galaxy may be captured by a larger one. The distribution of globular clusters around a galaxy holds therefore clues to their origins and to the history of the host galaxy. There is an additional benefit: Standard models of cosmology make predictions for how galaxies form and evolve that depend on fundamental properties of the universe like the amounts of dark matter and dark energy. The properties of globular ct scanners remote monitoring   cluster, mostly determined by the accretion histories and mergers of their host galaxies, also reflect the values of these fundamental cosmic quantities.
CfA astronomers Pepi Fabbiano and Raffaele D’Abrusco (now at the University of Naples), together with their colleagues, studied the globular clusters in the core of the Fornax Cluster of galaxies, a complex of over fifty galaxies located about sixty million light-years away. Using optical and near-infrared images taken with the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Survey Telescope, the scientists cataloged over three thousand globular clusters throughout Fornax (about two-thirds of them previously unidentified), providing a rich resource for structural analyses. They find clear evidence for an active history of galaxy-galaxy interactions, for example in bridges between galaxies, elongated groupings, and other unusual arrangements. While these results by themselves do not refine the values of any cosmological parameters, they are consistent with the standard models, and help complete the evolutionary description of this massive nearby cluster of galaxies.

- May need to rewire source
- Gets noticeably loud
For those of us clinging to (presumably leased) routers supplied to us by our ISPs, the Starry Station makes Wi-Fi easier without handing over your clean money month after month to a greedy conglomerate. Not only is it fast, bearing download speeds that are typically around the same as a Verizon FiOS stock router, but the Starry Station is stylish enough where you won’t have to tuck it away in a cabinet that will inevitably obstruct its signal. What’s more, it manages to avert those pesky numerical gateways that no one wants to memorize.

Back to Basics with the 2017 Verizon DBIR
Those who don’t know (cyber) history are destined to repeat it
For anyone who has followed the the Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) through its many iterations, the findings for 2017 come as no surprise. Credentials theft, phishing and ransomware remain the top attack vectors, and the best defense is still to focus on the basics of cyber hygiene with the goal of achieving cyber operational excellence across the organization.
Credentials theft, phishing and ransomware remain the top attack vectors, and the best defense is still to focus on the basics of cyber hygiene
Now in its tenth year, the DBIR is an annual glimpse into the murky world of cybercrime and its impact on the enterprise. The data-driven report still carries significant influence within the information security industry, but has earned criticism for not having anything new to say in recent years. But you can’t shoot the messenger just because you don’t like the message. If the DBIR findings are starting to sound repetitive, it’s because most organizations are still making the same mistakes with cybersecurity that they have been making for over a decade, by failing to prioritize security at the board level and not investing the time and resources to do security right.
Guard your credentials
Weak, stolen or compromised credentials remain the leading cause of breaches. With more than one billion credentials stolen in 2016 (page 7), relying on passwords alone without augmenting them with two-factor authentication is throwing caution to the wind. Since users like to reuse credentials from one site to another, you not only have to worry about protecting your own credentials from being stolen, but you also have to worry every time someone else’s database of passwords gets leaked online. This is why two-factor authentication is so important.
Teach and be vigilant
Links were made to be clicked on – that is their sole purpose. Users must click on links to do their jobs, but clicking on links in phishing emails is also one of the top ways attackers can gain entry into your networks. According to the DBIR, security-awareness training exercises, while somewhat effective, will never get you to zero links clicked; there is no significant difference in industries where users click links more frequently (page 11).
Source: Verizon 2017 Data Breach Investigations Report, page 11
Regardless of the amount of security-awareness training you provide, your users are human and they will make mistakes, sometimes clicking on the wrong things. The key then becomes detection, containment and rapid remediation so that an incident doesn’t turn into a breach.
Don’t pay, remember to backup
When looking at ransomware figures in this year’s report, keep in mind that ransomware attacks seldom result in data disclosure. That means that ransomware numbers do not fall under Verizon's definition of a breach, so the report’s charts and graphs may not include ransomware attacks. But there is an interesting ransomware statistic on page 23: ransomware accounts for 72% of malware incidents in the healthcare industry as reported by DHHS. That seems like an absurdly high number. While it could be that healthcare has been disproportionately targeted due to their predilection to pay the ransom, it could be that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has stricter reporting requirements. Either way, the message is clear that ransomware should be considered a significant threat. The really sad thing about these numbers is that ransomware is easily defeated by proper backups. Make sure you not only do proper backups but you also test restores to assess the integrity of your data before a crisis occurs.
You can think of ransomware as the monetization of poor cyber hygiene, because when you come right down to it, ransomware is simply an exploitation of the most well-known vulnerabilities to gain entry into enterprise networks. This is especially true of the healthcare industry, where overall cyber readiness lags behind other industries such as financial services. Keeping all your assets patched and up to date – not just servers, but mobile devices, virtual machines, cloud apps – goes a long way towards preventing ransomware attacks. Patching works, as Verizon reported in Appendix B (read on).
Patching works
Verizon takes a deeper dive into the patching process in Appendix B (page 64) of the report. The good news is that:
Only a single-digit percentage of breaches in the DBIR involved exploiting a vulnerability.
Patching vulnerabilities and configuration weaknesses is still a highly effective deterrent to attacks. But there is still more patching to be done.
Verizon found that organizations tend to patch everything that they are going to patch rather quickly, and everything else tends to stay unpatched for a very long time:
Source: Verizon 2017 Data Breach Investigations Report, page 64
Verizon also breaks its patching data out by device type (page 65) with User and Server devices receiving the most patches, followed by Network patches and Embedded devices:
Source: Verizon 2017 Data Breach Investigations Report, page 65
This is something that information security professionals have known for a long time: that routers, switches and other “closet” devices seldom see any patch love. It is nice to see data to back this up.
Back to basics
With data collected and collated from over sixty different organizations, the DBIR is a valuable tool to help CISOs determine how to allocate security resources to best defend their networks. such as how best to improve your threat response time, or how to make things more difficult for attackers.
A common theme throughout the report is that proper cyber hygiene, or simply following infosec best practices, will go a long way to protect your organization. Conduct a proper inventory of your hardware and software, patch systems in a prioritized manner, verify that your network equipment is properly configured and deployed, stay on top of inactive user credentials and enable two-factor authentication. Oh, and don’t forget your backups.

New Post has been published on Add Crazy
New Post has been published on https://addcrazy.com/four-things-we-expect-from-mobile-world-congress-2017/
four things we expect from Mobile World Congress 2017
Cell Global Congress, the Davos of wi-fi era, is happening next week in Barcelona, and it’s going to be a mainly important year, as the Cellular panorama readies itself for more than one fairly predominant shifts.
Right here’s our brief look in advance to subsequent week in sunny Spain and the four primary points we expect from the MWC display.
5G, or as minimum previews of it
There’s been a huge school of 5G press releases floating into our inboxes Here in tech media simply ahead of MWC (i.E., “Verizon plans 5G wireless trial provider in 11 cities this 12 months”), and it’s no actual wonder – subsequent-technology Cellular networks are going to do loads more than just raise speeds. They’ll additionally join massive numbers of devices – no longer simply telephones and tablets and laptops – to each other.
Certain, finalized 5G specs from 3GPP are nevertheless years away, however, organizations like Ericsson, Intel, GE, Mimosa Networks, and lots of others have announcements around MWC targeted on trying out, gadget reviews and more this 12 months. Classes at the display consist of a panel dialogue featuring new FCC Chairman Ajit Pai dubbed “Constructing the 5G Financial system” and every other titled “5G Beyond the Hype: Price and Constructing Blocks.”
Internet of factors
We touched on this above already, but IoT’s arguably the unmarried largest-deal technological location at this 12 months’ MWC. Linked houses, Related vehicles, industrial IoT and untold pitches for diverse elements of the infrastructure around all of it will be found in Barcelona.
“Clever living will perhaps be the most important normal customer subject matter at MWC this yr,” said United kingdom-primarily based evaluation firm Ovum. “The concept captures an array of gadgets and offerings so as to more and more augment customers’ each day lives – from energy metering to fitness tracking, Smart motors, fridges and washing machines.”
New gadgets, of route
It’s now not just going to be excessive-degree stuff about 5G and IoT, of course – there’ll nevertheless be plenty of gadgetry accessible. Samsung’s in all likelihood now not going to launch a new flagship at MWC this 12 months, though may at the least deliver a clue about while the anticipated Galaxy S8 cellphone might be announced. One at a time, LG is almost clearly going to come out with the G6, HTC could launch a new flagship, even though it probable gained be known as the HTC eleven, and Huawei’s probable aboard the flagship bandwagon as well (renders of its new P10 flagship have leaked). So Android cellphone will seize the spotlight, while Apple as regular will not make itself heard at the event.
no longer certainly a ton of wearables
Oh, there’ll certainly be some of them – HTC and Sony, among others, should roll out a smartwatch or two – however, the hour of the wearable as freshest new shape thing inside the gadget Global is probably over at this factor. There’s relatively little buzz around ability smartwatches, although become independent from MWC, Apple Watch Series 3 rumors are heating up. nonetheless, seeing that smartwatches are greater or much less what we’re speak approximately whilst we speak about wearables, it appears safe to say that they won’t be the splashiest of subjects at this MWC.
What Modifications Can we count on in 2013 in the Cellular World? Anyone has extraordinarily excessive expectancies within the Mobile International in 2013, in particular seeing that 2012 turned into an awesome 12 months for Cellular. The fact is that the Cellular enterprise is converting at a rapid pace, therefore we ought to see a few top notch improvements in this modern industry that belongs to each Mobile purchaser global.
It’s miles a verified fact that the Mobile trend has entered every thing of our non-public and expert lives. But, that allows you to see the realistic approaches that the Cellular generation will have an effect on or even exchange our lives this new yr, It’s far vital to take a look at some international tendencies of the Cellular World.
Thrilling Cellular developments in 2013
1. An even Faster App Boom. Increasingly more customers have come to understand that the usage of a Mobile cellphone whilst getting access to the Net is way extra smooth and beneficial than using a computer or a computing device Laptop. Consistent with Forrester Studies, the app Net marketplace is really worth over $2.2 billion. Forrester’s chairman predicted that this massive market will expand by over 80%. However, his point of view isn’t always the identical of many other advertising and marketing experts, who are expecting that the expansion won’t be bigger than 50%.
All Android, iOS, Blackberry and Windows phones have tens of hundreds of apps which can be promoted on Google Play or other phone app websites. Many talented programmers from all around the World are developing step forward apps which can be breaking new floor on this market, so there may be no other trend for Cellular apps than an upward one this new year.
2. An Advanced Browsing and Navigation Enjoy. An amazing example of such improvement become promoted via Kindle remaining year after they brought a brand new function that allowed its readers to pick up analyzing from in which they left off. This option is much like Google Docs’ offline mode, which routinely saves your articles, so in case the computer suddenly shuts down, you may without problems cross on writing from wherein you left.
The effects of a lot of these enhancements deliberate for this yr will permit the Cellular users to have a pinnacle-notch Surfing Enjoy, being capable of browsing the Internet even in offline mode. It’s far expected that the Cellular Net Surfing will attain 1.five billion customers this yr, at the same time as the desktop Internet utilization can be most effective 1.6 billion. If the fashion continues, maximum researchers agree with that by using 2015 the number of Mobile users will reach 2 billion, even as the range of folks who get entry to the Net on their laptops will reach 1.7 in step with the month. consequently, It’s miles vital that the Surfing Experience and navigation Revel in to be the high-quality viable, with the intention to fulfill even the savviest consumer.
3. Transferring to the Cloud. Box.net, Dropbox, and other cutting-edge cloud garage devices ease the process of connecting on your preferred media, inclusive of films and Television, each time you’re on the move. on the cloud, you may preserve together all your preferred video games, Tv shows, news, weather, social networking websites, and song.
four. C084d04ddacadd4b971ae3d98fecfb2a. This new area of the Mobile World will simply continue its steady Growth. Consistent with a few specialists, we might even see a few get entry to factors and routers embedded in pills and Mobile telephones. Furthermore, the rate between Cell gadgets will increase, bearing in mind a better and Quicker records transfer, and therefore an Advanced consumer Experience.
5. New Smartphones. In 2013, we will be without a doubt amazed with the aid of the brand new variety of smartphones on the way to hit the headlines. For most people, it will be likely quite difficult to hold up, especially in view that new phones are introduced on a weekly basis. However, on the pinnacle of all, two phones are taken into consideration to be certainly else: the one from Microsoft and the new release from Amazon. Alternatively, Nokia and Blackberry won’t be driven away so without difficulty because of their new releases: RIM’s BlackBerry 10 and Nokia’s Lumia 920.
6. Cell Video. Finally, one very last trend with a view to sweep throughout all countries this yr is the over-the-top video trend, for you to truly make the Cellular cross international. More and more clients are leaving behind their everyday cable Television subscriptions for Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, Apple and different over-the-pinnacle Net assets. Quickly, we might even see smartphones that include a Television receiver chip embedded in them.
There are numerous other Modifications we will count on in 2013 in the Mobile International, but the tendencies showcased above are among the most important we will Enjoy.
Cell advertising is constantly at the upward thrust, in particular given that Cellular users have taken over computing device Internet users. Check out greater precise and applicable information about the exquisite strength of Cell advertising and marketing by using clicking on the following hyperlink: The energy Of Cell marketing.

Astronomers  wireless  Measure Precise Rotation Pattern of Sun-Like Stars
www.inhandnetworks.com
Sun-like stars rotate differentially, with the equator rotating faster than the higher latitudes. The blue arrows in the figure represent rotation speed. Differential rotation is thought to be an essential ingredient for generating magnetic activity and starspots. MPI for Solar System Research/MarkGarlick
Researchers at NYU Abu Dhabi reveal that sun-like stars rotate up to two and a half times faster at the equator than at higher latitudes, a finding that challenges current science on how stars rotate.
Until now, little was known about the precise rotational patterns of Sun-like stars, only that the equator spins faster than at higher latitudes, similar to the Sun.
Scientists at the NYU Abu Dhabi Center for Space Science used observations from NASA’s Kepler mission and asteroseismology — the study of sound waves traveling inside stars — to determine with precision how Sun-like stars rotate, which no other scientif m2m communication  ic method has been able to achieve.
Their study found that Sun-like stars, characterized as being like the Sun in mass and age, do indeed rotate in a similar manner as the Sun in that their equatorial regions rotate more rapidly than at mid- to high latitudes. But there’s a key difference.
The equator of the Sun rotates about 10 percent faster than its mid latitudes, while equators of Sun-like stars spin up to two and a half times faster than their mid latitudes.
“This is very unexpected, and challenges current numerical simulations, which suggest that stars like these should not be able to sustain differential rotation of this magnitude,” said Othman Benomar, research associate at the NYU Abu Dhabi Center for Space Science and lead author of the study published in Science.
“Understanding differential rotation — how fast one part of a star spins compared to the rest — is not only important for a complete understanding of how a star works, it will help us gain deeper insights about their magnetic fields,” explained Katepalli Sreenivasan, principal investigator of the NYU Abu Dhabi Center for Space Science.
Magn Industrial LTE Router  etic fields on the Sun have been known to cause enormous solar storms that frequently disrupt orbiting space satellites and have knocked out power grids on Earth.
Scientists agree that the rotation of the Sun plays a crucial role in the generation of the solar magnetic field, but the exact details still remain a mystery, despite the Sun having been observed and studied in great detail.
Sreenivasan added, “learning more about how stars rotate and generate their own magnetic fields could help us gain further insight into the solar dynamo, the physical process that generates the Sun’s magnetic field.”

“Intel power sensor  ligent knife” Alerts Surgeons of Cancerous Tissue
www.inhandnetworks.com
Scientists from the Imperial College London have developed an “intelligent knife” that can inform surgeons about the tissue they are cutting, alerting them to whether the tissue is cancerous or not by using rapid evaporative ionization mass spectrometry.
In the first study to test the invention in the operating theater, the “iKnife” diagnosed tissue samples from 91 patients with 100 per cent accuracy, instantly providing information that normally takes up to half an hour to reveal using laboratory tests.
The findings, by researchers at Imperial College London, are published today in the journal Science Translational Medicine. The study was funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Imperial Biomedical Research Center, the European Research Council and the Hungarian National Office for Research and Technology.
In cancers involving solid tumors, removal of the cancer in surgery is generally the best hope for treatment. The surgeon normally takes out the tumor with a margin of healthy tissue. However, it is often impossible to tell by sight which tissue is cancerous. One in five breast cancer patients who have surgery require a second operation to fully remove the cancer. In cases of uncertainty, the removed tissue is sent to a lab for examination while the patient remains under general anaesthetic.
watch?v=P9LMzGpZD1s
The iKnife is based on electrosurgery, a technology invented in the 1920s that is commonly used today. Electrosurgical knives use an electrical current to rapidly heat tissue, cutting through it while minimizing blood loss. In doing so, they vaporize the tissue, creating smoke that is normally sucked away by extraction systems.
The inventor of the iKnife, Dr Zoltan Takats of Imperial College London, realized that this smoke would be a rich source of biological information. To create the iKnife, he connected an electrosurgical knife to a mass spectrometer, an analytical instrument used to identify what chemicals are present in a sample. Different types of cell produce thousands of metabolites in different concentrations, so the profile of chemicals in a biological sample can reveal information about the state of that tissue.
In the new study, the researchers first used the iKnife to analyze tissue samples collected from 302 surgery patients, recording the characteristics of thousands of cancerous and non-cancerous tissues, including brain, lung, breast, stomach, colon and liver tumors to create a reference library. The iKnife works by matching its readings during surgery to the reference library to determine what type of tissue is being cut, giving a result in less than three seconds.
The technology was then transferred to the operating theater to perform real-time analysis during surgery. In all 91 tests, the tissue type identified by the iKnife matched the post-operative diagnosis based on traditional methods.
While the iKnife was being tested, surgeons were unable to see the results of its readings. The researchers hope to carry out a clinical trial to see whether giving surgeons access to the iKnife’s analysis can improve patients’ outcomes.
“These results provide compelling evidence that the iKnife can be applied in a wide range of cancer surgery procedures,” Dr Takats said. “It provides a result almost instantly, allowing surgeons to carry out procedures with a level of accuracy that hasn’t been possible before. We believe it has the potential to reduce tumor recurrence rates and enable more patients to survive.”
Although the current study focused on cancer diagnosis, Dr Takats says the iKnife can identify many other features, such as tissue with an inadequate blood supply, or types of bacteria present in the tissue. He has also carried out experiments using it to distinguish horsemeat from beef.
Professor Jeremy Nicholson, Head of the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College London, who co-authored the study, said: “The iKnife is one manifestation of several advanced chemical profiling technologies developed in our labs that are contributing to surgical decision-making and real-time diagnostics. These methods are part of a new framework of patient journey optimization that we are building at Imperial to help doctors diagnose disease, select the best treatments, and monitor individual patients’ progress as part our personalized healthcare plan.”
Lord Darzi, Professor of Surgery at Imperial  industrial cellular modem  College London, who also co-authored the study, said: “In cancer surgery, you want to take out as little healthy tissue as possible, but you have to ensure that you remove all of the cancer. There is a real need for technology that can help the surgeon determine which tissue to cut out and which to leave in. This study shows that the iKnife has the potential to do this, and the impact on cancer surgery could be enormous.”
Lord Howe, Health Minister, said: “We want to be among the best countries in the world at treating cancer and know that new technologies have the potential to save lives. The iKnife could reduce the need for people needing secondary operations for cancer and improve accuracy, and I’m delighted we could support the work of researchers at Imperial College London. This project shows once again how Government funding is putting the UK at the forefront of world-leading health research.”

New Biofuel Production Process Improves Ener Android vending computer  gy Recovery
www.inhandnetworks.com
A new biofuel production process created by Michigan State University researchers produces energy more than 20 times higher than existing methods.
Using bacteria to breakdown and ferment agricultural waste into ethanol, MSU microbiologists have developed bioelectrochemical systems known as microbial electrolysis cells, which use a second bacterium, Geobacter sulfurreducens, to produce energy more than 20 times higher than existing methods.
East Lansing, Michigan — A new biofuel production process created by Michigan State University researchers produces energy more than 20 times higher than existing methods.
The results, published in the current issue of Environmental Science and Technology, showcase a novel way to use microbes to produce biofuel and hydrogen, all while consuming agricultural wastes.
Gemma Reguera, MSU microbiologist, has developed bioelectrochemical systems known as microbial electrolysis cells, or MECs, using bacteria to breakdown and ferment agricultural waste into ethanol. Reguera’s platform is unique because it employs a second bacterium, which, when added to the mix, removes all the waste fermentation byproducts or nonethanol materials while generating electricity.
Similar m remote diagnostics  icrobial fuel cells have been investigated before. However, maximum energy recoveries from corn stover, a common feedstock for biofuels, hover around 3.5 percent. Regu industrial IoT router  era’s platform, despite the energy invested in chemical pretreatment of the corn stover, averaged 35 to 40 percent energy recovery just from the fermentation process, said Reguera, an AgBioResearch scientist who co-authored the paper with Allison Spears, MSU graduate student.
“This is because the fermentative bacterium was carefully selected to degrade and ferment agricultural wastes into ethanol efficiently and to produce byproducts that could be metabolized by the electricity-producing bacterium,” Reguera said. “By removing the waste products of fermentation, the growth and metabolism of the fermentative bacterium also was stimulated. Basically, each step we take is custom-designed to be optimal.”
The second bacterium, Geobacter sulfurreducens, generates electricity. The electricity, however, isn’t harvested as an output. It is used to generate hydrogen in the MEC to increase the energy recovery process even more, Reguera said.
“When the MEC generates hydrogen, it actually doubles the energy recoveries,” she said. “We increased energy recovery to 73 percent. So the potential is definitely there to make this platform attractive for processing agricultural wastes.”
Reguera’s fuel cells use corn stover treated by the ammonia fiber expansion process, an advanced pretreatment technology pioneered at MSU. AFEX is an already proven method that was developed by Bruce Dale, MSU professor of chemical engineering and materials science.
Dale is currently working to make AFEX viable on a commercial scale.
In a similar vein, Reguera is continuing to optimize her MECs so they, too, can be scaled up on a commercial basis. Her goal is to develop decentralized systems that can help process agricultural wastes. Decentralized systems could be customized at small to medium scales (scales such as c vending vms ompost bins and small silages, for example) to provide an attractive method to recycle the wastes while generating fuel for farms.

Nanostructure Increases Solar-to-Hydrogen Conversion Efficiency by a Factor of Ele vending telemetry  ven
www.inhandnetworks.com
PCN nanolayers under sunlight can split water. Image: Nannan Meng /Tianjin University
Polymeric carbon nitrides exhibit a catalytic effect in sunlight that substation monitoring   can be used for the production of hydrogen from solar energy. However, the efficiency of these metal-free catalysts is extremely low. A team at the Tianjin University in China, in collaboration with a group at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, has increased the catalytic efficiency of these polymeric carbon nitrides by a factor eleven through a simple process resulting in a larger surface area. The paper was published in the journal Energy & Environmental Science.
One of the major challenges of the energy transition is to supply energy even when the sun is not shining. Hydrogen production by splitting water with the help of sunlight could offer a solution. Hydrogen is a good energy storage medium and can be used in many ways. However, water does not simply split by itself. Catalysts are needed, for instance Platinum, which is rare and expensive. Research teams the world over are looking for more economical alternatives. Now a team headed by Dr. Tristan Petit from the HZB, together with colleagues led by Prof. Bin Zhang from Tianjin University, Tianjin, China, has made important progress using a well-known class of metal-free photocatalysts.
Nanolayers with large pores
Bin Zhang and his team specialise in the synthesis of polymeric carbon nitrides (PCN) that is considered a good candidate as a catalyst for hydrogen production. The PCN molecules form a structure that can be compar wastewater treatment  ed to thin layers of filo pastry dough: sheets of this material lie on top of each other tightly packed together. The Chinese chemists have now succeeded by means of a relatively simple two-step heat treatment in separating the individual sheets from each other – the same way that puff pastry separates into individual crispy layers in the oven. The heat treatment produced samples consisting of individual nanolayers with large pores containing different amino groups with specific functionalities.
A heat treatment produced samples  Wireless ATM  consisting of individual nanolayers with large pores containing different amino groups with specific functionalities. Image: Nannan Meng /Tianjin University
Amino- and oxygenated groups analysed at BESSY II
Petit and his team investigated a series of these PCN samples at BESSY II. “We were able to determine which amino and oxygenated groups had been deposited in the pores”, PhD-student Jian Ren and co-first author of the publication explains. They could analyse how specific amino groups pull electrons to themselves, a particularly favourable property for splitting water, and how new oxygen-based defects were formed.
Efficiency increased by factor eleven
When combined with nickel as a co-catalyst, those samples of nanostructured PCN actually exhibited record-breaking efficiency, eleven times that of normal PCN under visible light irradiation.
Photocatalytic processes at BESSY II unraveled
“This demonstrates that PCN is an interesting potential catalyst for solar-to-hydrogen production, approaching the efficiency of inorganic catalysts,” explains Petit, who is a Volkswagen Foundation Freigeist Fellow. “Furthermore, this work also shows that soft X-ray spectroscopies are essential tools to unravel possible catalytically active sites on photocatalysts.”

Ancient Antarctica Was Much Warmer and Wette LangShan Technology  r than Previously Suspected
www.inhandnetworks.com
A new study finds ancient Antarctica was much warmer and wetter than previously suspected, with a climate that was suitable to support substantial vegetation—including stunted trees—along the edges of the frozen continent. This artist’s rendition created from a photograph of Antarctica shows what Antarctica possibly looked like during the middle Miocene epoch, based on pollen fossil data. The landscape featured freshwater algae growing in meltwater ponds, low tundra vegetation on coastal plains and tundra with shrub-like southern beech and low podocarp trees growing on warmer sites, with shrubs as high as approximately 20 inches (50 centimeters). Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/Dr. Philip Bart, LSU
In an effort to better understand what the future of climate change may look like, a team of scientists examined plant leaf wax remnants in sediment core samples taken from beneath the Ross Ice Shelf, finding that ancient Antarctica was much warmer and wetter than previously suspected.
Pasadena, California — A new university-led study with NASA participation finds ancient Antarctica was much warmer and wetter than previously suspected. The climate was suitable to support substantial vegetation — including stunted trees — along the edges of the frozen continent.
The team of scientists involved in the study, published online June 17 in Nature Geoscience, was led by Sarah J. Feakins of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, and included researchers from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.
By examining plant leaf wax remnants in sediment core samples taken from beneath the Ross Ice Shelf, the research team found summer temperatures along the Antarctic coast 15 to 20 million years ago were 20 degrees Fahrenheit (11 degrees Celsius) warmer than today, with temperatures reaching as high as 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius). Precipitation levels also were found to be several times higher than today.
Pollen grains and leaf waxes record vegetation on Antarctica during a time of global warmth 20-15 million years ago, when greenhouse gas concentrations may have been similar to projections for the end of the 21st Century. Image credit: Sophie Warny and Kate Griener (Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge
“The ultimate goal of the study was to better understand what the future of climate change may look like,” said Feakins, an assistant professor of Earth sciences at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. “Just as history has a lot to teach us about the future, so does past climate. This record shows us how much warmer and wetter it can get around the Antarctic ice sheet as the climate system heats up. This is some of the first evidence of just how much warmer it was.”
Scientists began to suspect that high-latitude temperatures during the middle Miocene epoch were warmer than previously believed when co-author Sophie Warny, assistant professor at LSU, discovered large quantities of pollen and algae in sediment cores taken around Antarctica. Fossils of plant life in Antarctica are difficult to come by because the movement of the massive ice sheets covering the landmass grinds and scrapes away the evidence.

“Marine sediment cores are ideal to look for clues of past vegetation, as the fossils deposited are protected from ice sheet advances, but these are technically very difficult to acquire in the Antarctic and require international collaboration,” said Warny.
Tipped off by the tiny pollen samples, Feakins opted to look at the remnants of leaf wax taken from sediment cores for clues. Leaf wax acts as a record of climate change by documenting the hydrogen isotope ratios of the water the plant took up while it was alive.
“Ice cores can only go back about one million years,” Feakins said. “Sediment cores allow us to go into ‘deep time.'”
Based upon a model originally developed to analyze hydrogen isotope ratios in atmo router industrial  spheric water vapor data from NASA’s Aura spacecraft, co-author and JPL scientist Jung-Eun Lee created experiments to find out just how much warmer and wetter climate may have been.
“When the planet heats up, the biggest changes are seen toward the poles,” Lee said. “The southward movement of rain bands associated with a warmer climate in the high-latitude southern hemisphere made the margins of Antarctica less like a polar desert, and more like present-day Iceland.”
The peak of this Antarctic greening occurred during the middle Miocene period, between 16.4 and 15.7 million years ago. This was well after the age of the dinosaurs, which became extinct 64 million years ago. During the Miocene epoch, mostly modern-looking animals roamed Earth, such as three-toed horses, deer, camel and various species of apes. Modern humans did not appear until 200,000 years ago.
Warm conditions during the middle Miocene are thought to be associated with carbon dioxide levels of around 400 to 600 parts per million (ppm). In 2012, carbon dioxide levels have climbed to 393 ppm, the highest they’ve been in the past several million years. At the current rate of increase, atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are on track to reach middle Miocene levels by the end of this century.
High carbon dioxide levels during the middle Miocene epoch have been documented in other studies through multiple lines of evidence, incPower Fault Detectionluding the number of microscopic pores on the surface of plant leaves and geochemical evidence from soils and marine organisms. While none of these ‘proxies’ is as reliable as the bubbles of gas trapped in ice cores, they are the best evidence available this far back in time. While scientists do not yet know precisely why carbon dioxide was at these levels during the middle Miocene, high carbon dioxide, together with the global warmth documented from many parts of the world and now also from the Antarctic region, appear to coincide during this period in Earth’s history.
