August 18: Orphan (2009)
I feel like the real punch of this one is the twist, which I won't give away for those of you who have not seen the film. I was spoiled for both this twist and the one in Orphan First Kill, the prequel, but the twist comes much earlier in the 2022 film.
There's something so fun about taking the villain/antagonist of one film and then making them the protagonist of their own film in the second installment (obviously Pearl following X is an excellent example of this). Leena is the same character in both films, but the tones are delightfully different.
Orphan sets up Kate (Vera Farmiga) as the protagonist in the battle of wills between her and Leena that follows. First Kill sets up a similar dynamic between Tricia (Julia Stiles) and Lena, but Kate is fighting to protect her young and, comparatively in Daniel's case, sweet children, while Tricia is fighting to protect herself and, well . . . Gunnar.
I'm still thinking about Gunnar's death and smiling hours after I finished First Kill.
So, Orphan is very effective, and I think people who saw it first (without being spoiled for the twist) probably had the best experience. But First Kill is a joy whether you've seen the first film or not and whether you know the twist or not because it is so wickedly funny!

Orphan (2009)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ .5

This one has been on my watchlist for a while and oh my lord, I adored it. In a stomach-churning, vile sort of a way. This film was SICK, and did indeed keep me guessing.
What really sticks out in this film is how seamless the performance of Esther is, she is so clever and cunning. I almost wish the runtime was longer so we could have seen more of her setup to the final crescendo. A must-watch indeed.
Watch this if:
You don’t mind the classic horror trope of ‘man thinks wife worries too much’
The faux long-game home infiltration is a compelling narrative
Similar titles:
Insidious (2010) (demonic child, supernatural)
Hereditary (2018) (its coming from inside the house)

I watched "Orphan," for the first time today. Well, that was a surprise.
Just kidding! I already knew about the twist. Still enjoyed the movie, though.
