Of Galdrastafir and Cipher Runes
Galdrastafir – Icelandic Staves  Often conflated with bind runes the Icelandic magical staves are an hybrid outgrowth of the ancient runic alphabet being incorporated into the Icelandic grimoire tradition and the latin alphabet. These creations are creative expressions of magical spells and often appear upon amulets and within magical books. The runes themselves do not appear often or clearly,…

Vegvísir inspired sigil from tonight's rune spread. Basically means "I am strong. I am growing. I am in control of my own path."

Wait NVM I read the description.
I know what the runes are now.
Ignore my non observant ass 😆
Oh my god I love it! 😍
But I wanna know what all the runes are. Just, y'know, double check.
And I need to message the vendor and ask if he'll add an insert of translucent material to diffuse the light a little.

Tagged by @punchandspade, thank you!
Share your wallpaper: My wallpaper on my phone changes every hour, currently it's a picture I took on a summer morning as sea fog rolled in over the dune-y heath shortly after sunrise:
Tumblr media
The last song you listened to: At the start of this post: Runaway deer by Arc de Soleil. At the end of the post: Hand Cannot Erase by Steven Wilson
Currently Reading: Spatort fics and what feels like 365927 scientific papers
Last Movie: Does the theatre play Much ado about nothing count?
Craving: For my exams to write themselves.... also, a good home-made chai, which I hope to have time to brew next week
What are you wearing right now: Jeans, knitted socks and a t-shirt. Simple and cozy <3
How tall are you: 169, pretty average for a gal here, but small compared to most of my friends
Piercings: A set of earrings
Tattoos: None as of yet
Glasses? Contacts?: Glasses
Last drink: Freshly brewed coffee to my breakfast
Last show: The sad German cop shows.... Tatort Saarbrücken, Soko Leipzig or Polizeiruf Świecko, pick one
Last thing you ate: Breakfast bun with (salted!) butter, berry jam and cheese. It's a real shame that jam and cheese doesn't seem to be a universal combination on bread, 'cause it tastes damn good
Favourite colour: Green <3
Current obsession: Aforementioned sad German cop shows
Unrelated Obsession: Birds. My ongoing and eternal obsession
Any pets: Nope
Do you have a crush on anyone: Also nope
Favourite fictional character: Oh I don't have a favourite above all else, but there are a lot I hold dear in my heart. If I'd have to highlight some, I really love Mollymauk and Beau from Critical Role, and Sissix from The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet.
The last place you traveled: I was in Germany over the weekend :D
Tagging @triscribe, @sinnsenke, @silverysnake and @schuerk, hope you have as much fun with this as I had :)

Imma say something brave but yet important
Just 👏🏻 because 👏🏻 the 👏🏻 Symbol 👏🏻 wasn’t 👏🏻 used 👏🏻 in 👏🏻 a pre Christian 👏🏻 context 👏🏻 does 👏🏻 not 👏🏻 make it 👏🏻 invalid to 👏🏻 use in 👏🏻 a modern practice
Shit if you want to use the Vegvísir sigil because the meaning of it connects with you then bestie you can use it. Just be mindful it’s not pre-Christian and be careful of neo-n@zi influences of modern symbols within the Norse pagan community. But that sigil I mention we can use it if we want to yes it ain’t ancient but it holds a lot of significance to many people.
The Hekate’s wheel though her wheel is ancient documented in archeology but even then many pagans and witches connect her with that symbol that made it her own symbol. Ancient symbols were once created by people….it doesn’t make it any less valid if someone made a their unique sigils or symbols of the gods. This goes for depictions as well. Best example of this, Angels, Biblically accurate angels do not look like a human with wings that’s a Roman Catholic and Orthodox depiction from pagan spirits after the rise of Christianity. Yet many people have used that depiction for centuries giving it power and influence and that’s what angels show up to people today.
It’s my two cents like I give hare/rabbits to Freyja even though that isn’t her traditional sacred animal I just thought she would like rabbits because of fertility. Same with Cats, I for some reason always link Cats with Hestia, as I always see cats sleeping by the fireplace guarding the home, etc. the only thing I will say do not go around misinformation about these symbols if it is neo pagan or not just check sources it’s okay to be wrong and learn!

This bronze rune compass is based on an Icelandic magical symbol called  Vegvísir. This roughly translates as 'guidepost' and the Huld Manuscript states: 'if this sign is carried, one will never lose one's way...'

Happy new year! I finished the cover for Chapter 23 (it's on Patreon) and felt compelled to collect all the previous covers together in one post.
The covers started off with the idea of mimicking the art styles often found on picture stones, being even more figurative and abstract than the style used in the comic itself. Over time they became less detailed but were always a fun departure that allowed me to play around with different layouts or design elements.
It was especially fun to bring in historic designs connected to cultures featured in the comic. Some specifics include:
Swirls inspired by Newgrange carvings for "The Thrall" and others that focus on Hedda/Saoirse.
Various Andalusian/Islamic design elements from the Mosque of Cordoba, the Madinat al-Zahra, and of course the Alhambra used in "Al Andalus" and "The Moor."
A magical stave is mixed with a hnefatafl board for the "Iceland" cover. The symbol is the Vegvísir stave meant to help someone find their way in rough weather. Arne also has a Helm of Awe on his chest in "The Skraeling." These staves would not have been used by Vikings (they're from the 17th century), but they look cool and that's reason enough to use them!
The "Homeward" cover features Arne split between a more Viking-like art style and one inspired by carvings from his birth culture, the Dorset.
Ogham inscription stones are the focus for "Freedom." They transliterate the Hail Mary prayer, which Hedda prays when we first meet her.
The ancient "red dancers" surround Angrboda's cave entrance in "Compensation." I already went into more detail about the red dancers in this post if you'd like to read more about them. They're really cool.
The cover for Chapter 23 also has a non-Viking inspired design to it, but it'll be a few weeks before it becomes public. If you'd like to see it now, and new pages as they're created, please consider joining my Patreon.
I hope you enjoyed this little glimpse into my thought process and inspirations. History is full of amazing things and people have been creating art since they had time to do so. It's as close to time travel as we'll ever get.

well once I have the money set aside for it (lmao) I'll get these kennings (top one's for Óðinn and bottom's for Þórr)
ᚨᚾᛊᚢᚱᚨᛒᚾᚨᛉ (ansuhrabnaz; raven-god)
ᚲᚢᚾᛁᛉᚺᛇᛗᚨᛊ (kuniz haimas; descendant [of the] land)
I’ve been thinking about getting a runic tattoo for fucking ages for religious reasons and I think I want to get a kenning translated into runes— the question now becomes 1) what kenning(s) and 2) do I take the extra step to translate the kenning into proto-Germanic so I can work with the elder futhark or do I just stick w/ the kenning as is and use the younger futhark

🍀🎬🌻 throws these at you
Dragonnn hi ty!
🍀 Do you have any good luck charms or amulets?
I put my main one in one of the other asks so I’ll put a different one here—aww I don’t have it with me to take a picture but I went to the coin minting place at the ren faire and got one with the vegvísir compass on one side and a dragon rampant on the other! And since I like using little everyday things for inspiration when I write fantasy, I had the idea that in my fantasy world I play with a lot this would be a decently common enchanted amulet type thing that points travellers where they need to go, kinda like Jack Sparrow’s compass. So now I like taking it on long trips with me
🎬 Is there any book/movie/song/show that you would be embarrassed to admit enjoying in real life?
…dream smp……look I just lurked ok. I was not part of the crazy part of the fandom. I was mainly there for Technoblade. And I do still have fond memories from those days and I do still like the characters and the story but…yeahhh that…could have ended up better…good thing I never really care about content creators themselves. Technoblade himself tho I will never be ashamed of liking I love himmm :(
🌻 Share a random fact about yourself
Oo another one hmm…how about. I have a bunch of random auxiliary percussion instruments around my house for fun because I used to be in marching band and hated the environment but loved the instruments! Fun fact if you take a video of a slapstick being played in slow motion it sounds like a shotgun sound effect. Also look up a vibraslap I love them and Zack Fair would be absolutely insufferable if he ever got his hands on one

WAAAH okayokayokay
so her name is marilynn, she grew up with her mother while her father took care of her older brother (divorce child). While she got older her mother started suffering from artheritis, her knees started giving out so she had to do basically anything around the house. Child protective services found out (even though she wasn't against it) they made her stay with her father and brother. Her brother was studying law at that time so she was absically alone with her father who thought she didn't get enough disipline so he sent her to her grandmother. She used to love staying there but since her grandfather died at war her grandmother's been going back to her old fashioned roots wich made her critisize everything about marilynn. Her figure, her face, her grades, just anything. When she finally turned 18 she moved to another city, however still kept in contact with her family (and they still regularely meet up for dinner every few weeks) hiwever the first few week of 'freedom' she had the urge to do something that she wasn't allowed in the past two years with her grandmother so she got snake bites. She also got to be good friends with the piercer (who also does tattoos) so they met up a but more and kinda fell inlove but they're both to shy to tell one another sonthey keep their mouths shut. She also had a tattoo on her chest, near the heart. It's a vegvísir (also known as a norse compass, it's often sadly seen as a nazi symbol even though it is an old symbol of old norse languages meaning oreantation and safeness) wich is supposed to keep her heart safe! So this tattoo guy (his name is trik) helps her find a joby by introducing her to the man who raised trik, he didn't rlly adopt him since they kinda live in the slumps but they still act like father and son. The father's name is Hárkon (again the name from the norse) by the way. So she starts working in the bar that Hárkon owns :3
