Hargreeves siblings: who ends up crying at Vanya’s solo performance?

Probably not what you had in mind, sorry.

Somewhere between his thirtieth and thirty-fifth birthday, Five had come to the conclusion that reality did not really exist. It couldn’t.

Reality, as it is, is just the immediate consequence of a series of irrelevant and often disconnected actions, and given the extreme variability of a person's behaviour it would be illogical to assume that there is only one reality to live in. No, there have to be a lot of them, and they all stand one jump away from each other.

One jump, and he’s thirteen, really thirteen, and he never tries time traveling.

One jump, and he’s still thirteen, and his siblings are sixteen and still all alive.

One jump, and he’s there to save Ben.

One jump, and he dies before he can come back to save them all.

One jump, and he’s here, in this theatre, and he was so close to stop the whole thing, but he’s failed, and now it’s just him and Vanya, and the world outside is collapsing on itself, the earth is shaking and the buildings are crumbling down, their house is a pile of ruins and their siblings are dead bodies in the dust.

But Vanya’s playing her violin with her eyes closed and a smile on her lips, and the music is just so beautiful. They’re the last two living being on a dying planet and Five shouldn’t be here in the first place but he is, and he’s crying, not because he’s mourning his brothers and sister ― god knows for how long he mourned them already, maybe he never stopped, not even when he saw them alive again ― no, he’s crying because the Earth is ending in minutes and it has the best background music a dying planet could ask for.

Has Vanya always been so good at playing? He can’t remember. Childhood is a long lost memory that time and loneliness have gnawed away from him.

“I looked for you”, Five says, and he’s screaming and whispering at the same time. He knows that the world will end with the violin’s last chord and he needs to tell this to her, he needs to make her understand. He loved her. He loved them all. He still does.

“You were not at the house”, he goes on, and Vanya doesn’t look at him, but he knows she’s listening. “You were not with them and I looked for you everywhere, but I couldn’t find your body and I knew you were still alive.”

For years he had looked for her. Because why not?

Back then he had not known that she had been the cause of everything, but now he does. And it makes no sense. She ended the world but she survived. Then why had he never found her? Where was she? The idea of never having been alone in his post-apocalyptic future is, for some reason, even more frightening than the memory of the decades spent by himself.

“Were you there?”, he yells, and he’s angry now, even though he's still crying, and it’s stupid because this Vanya cannot answer, this Vanya cannot know. But this Vanya is all he's got, and she’s killed their siblings, and she’s going to kill him, and she had left him alone. “Answer me! Were you there with me?”

Vanya doesn’t answer. She only opens her eyes when she stops playing, and as the last vibration of her bow stretches towards Five, she winks. Afterwards there's only darkness.

I NEED TO VENT, DUDE! THIS IS JUST MY OPINION PLEASE DONT GET MAD AT ME. GOD BLESS YOU IF YOU LIKED IT. THE WORLD IS BEAUTIFUL CUZ WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT.

I haven’t read the comics or know anything about this franchise other than the Netflix show that I just finished! So I’m just ranting about this as a tv show.

Man, I had been so ecxcited for this show! It looked so cool and different and fun! A dysfunctional family with superpowers that need to stop the world from ending!? That sounds awesome! (And that cute character with the beard and eyeliner is already my favourite!) I was ready for some supporting family scenes! Siblings counting on each other after being raised by this asshole dad! They all look so cool and interesting, I can’t wait to see them intereact with each other! Since it’s probably focused on the family there might not even be a stupid boring love subplot! I can’t wait!

Yeah no.

what I got instead was:

People being constantly mean to each other, always thinking about themselves and not ever, ever put aside their problems to help another person. Especially not if they are their siblings, then they just somehow make it about themselves. “I feel bad cuz my mind is filled with ghost voices” Normal response: “I am so sorry, that must be very difficult. I don’t like that you try to block it by using drugs, but I understand why. I hope you know you can talk to me about it.” BUT WHAT INSTEAD HAPPENS: “OH MY GOD GROW UP! we’re all hurting! Me especially! Have I mentioned that I’m sad too! You’re not the only one that dad messed up! You should just pull yourself together you weak baby!” Or even this messed up mentality that they seem to have: “Fuck You! Are you seriously sad that you didn’t get hugged once when you were little!? Didn’t ever get love or felt loved by your parental figure?! You have scary powers, and the only way to practice or control them was to lock you up somewhere dark and scary!? And a monkey butler told you that it was only done to protect you!? Cuz obviously the only way to do that is to emotionally scar and destroy a 5-10 year old CHILD!? CHILDREN NEEDING LOVE AND POSITIVE ATTENTION TO GROW UP INTO FUNCTIONAL ADULTS IS A MYTH! AND YOU SHOULD ALL BE THANKFUL FOR WHAT YOUR FATHER DID FOR YOU! HE LOVED YOU ALL IN HIS OWN WAY SO ITS FINE!!!!! stop being a baby and grow up right this second without any human affection unless it’s from someone you can fuck! AAAAAAAAAA!!”

So I’m just so mad. I know they are supposed to be emotionally stunted and dysfunctional, but they don’t frame it like it’s a horrible thing. Like it’s something they need real help with from other people or each other. They also always say: “They are my family. I love them. They love me. I need to save them. They would do the same for me. That’s what a family is. we hate each other, fight constantly and say horrible things, don’t talk or support each other, never have any fun together or positive scenes of us all bonding or making good memories. We ignore the hell out of those of us who really need help, and are actively drowning in front of us. Especially if they have SERIOUS DRUG PROBLEMS or WERE EMOTIONALLY ABUSED AND IGNORED ALL THEIR LIFE BY US AND OUR FATHER.....but we love each other and I would be destroyed if anything happened to them.

I SERIOUSLY DONT FEEL ANY LOVE BETWEEN THESE Characters! They also are almost never all in the same room, and many of them don’t even ever talk! I would have loved to see how Klaus and Vanja get along! Or Nr 5 and Vanja! Or Just ANYONE IN THAT FAMILY WHO MIGHT BE NICE TO VANJA! And not just Allison because she’s her sister and only sisters can be friends blah blah blah! Luther can go die in a deep hole. SHE CAME TO YOU GUYS FOR HELP! THE WORLD IS ENDING BECAUSE YOU ARE ALL TO FAR UP YOUR OWN ASS TO HELP ANOTHER PERSON! NONE OF YOU EVEN TRIED TO TALK TO HER! (except Allison and she lost her voice cuz fuck you) HER POWERS ARE NOT “TO BE EVIL” SHE WAS NOT DESTINED FOR THIS! Your dad was a fucking idiot who thought: “Goodness me! This BABY is not responding well to me being angry and demanding of her!? SHE MUST BE LOCKED UP IN A SPIKY BOX THIS INSTANT! MAKE SURE EVERYONE IGNORES HER TOO, SO SHE’LL FEEL LONELY ALL HER LIFE! I THINK THAT WILL GREATLY HELP WITH KEEPING HER SAFE! I AM A GOOD PARENT AT THE END OF THE DAY!”

JUST.....! Fuck these people. (Except for Vanja, Klaus, Agnes and Hazel....and nr 5 was kinda alright. I liked him a bit.)

I hope to god they get better in the next season. This is all over the place sorry. 😅

Meanwhile Luther goes through the same torturous abusing childhood everyone goes through and still thinks it’s his fault that he couldn’t manage a mission all alone and his dad sent him to the moon FOR FUCKIN FOUR YEARS

Everyone on the show is with faults and Luther has a lot of them but he gets a hate he doesn’t deserve

I think we're alone now

As I thought about this super awesome scene, I realized something.

No one was even slightly surprised as Luther started to play the song. They were recognizing, remebering. Obviously this wasn't the first time they danced to this song. But the last time they were all together is years ago. So it must been a a while since the last time.

As they were dancing, they were remembering something they did years ago. It was just a shadow of what they used to do. But this shadow was enough to let them break lose. Even in this tension filled situation after Luther accused them that one of them had killed Reginald.

Now just think what that means. They couldn't just had listend to the song. This would never cause memories wich are that strong.

Just imagine the hargeeves as little children. Reginald had left the house shortly for some reason and they finally have the freedom to be kids. They turned on "I think we're alone now" as loud as possible and then they just lost it and went wild.

Also the it's "i think we're alone now" and not "I think I'm alone now".

The Hargreeves used to dance their hearts out together whenever Reginald left.

Vanja and Allison get these bracelets together.

Klaus looks at them with puppy dog eyes so they buy him one as well

Diego and Luther buy one for eachother as a joke but they secretly love it

Klaus gets one extra for Ben

All of them look at five

"I hate all of you," he says, while slamming the bracelet around his wrist.

The best change from the comics: 1. Vanja’s storyline! Her change is not all of a sudden like in the comics and doesn’t depend on other people’s will: it’s slower and all about HER will, HER power, HER desire. There still is someone else involved who’s essential to the discovery of her true power, but nevertheless i’d say tv Vanja is def her own person! 

2. KLAUS’S INTERACTION WITH ***** (can’t say and won’t say! it’s a nice surprise that’s pivotal to his character development)

3. More generally, the show’s focus on the characters, their psychology and their relationships with one another. As I said in another answer, this truly feels like The Royal Tenenbaums (with superpowers). I don’t know if you have watched The Haunting of Hill House (if you haven’t: DO IT NOW. Great show), but I’ve found a common leit motif: both shows use a genre or a set of tropes (horror, spec. haunted house for Hill House, superhero movies/shows for TUA) as a way to portray a dysfunctional family trying to cope with loss and, you know, just learning to communicate. I really loved the introspective twist and I think most of people will too!

The worst change… it’s not exactly a change because it’s hinted at, but I would have loved to see them fighting against the tour eiffel! But I mean, this depends on the show’s budget

Your son Diego doesn’t exactly have a girlfriend BUT we see him interacting with a lovely detective and it’s immediately clear that the two have a history! Her character is super interesting, even if we don’t get to see her that much. 

As for the other pairings… Vanja has a romantic affair! But I won’t say too much because it’s a big change from the comics (and it’s a way to develop her character even more, giving her depth while making us realise just how alone and loney she has been) - i think people are gonna like her storyline (let me just say that the series takes things slower than the comics with vanja)

it’s not stupid at all, i love this question! and have been meaning to answer since last night but was too tired so SORRY FOR THE LATE REPLY

anyway, here’s the list:

- luther with tony stark bc he’s like an emo cap america and i’m all for it. wanna see them BICKER 

- diego would be a black panther fan boy (but would never admit it). and he would team up with hawkeye, the two of them would constantly be doing challenges to see who has the best aim

- Allison with black widow because GIRLS SUPPORTING GIRLS while roasting their male team mates who are, tbh, a bit stupid sometimes

- Klaus with guardians of the galaxy. ALL of them. he would have so much fun

- Five with peter parker because he would NEVER wrap his head around the fact that he’s actually a sixty-something man in the body of a teenager and would be so annoyingly fun CAN YOU IMAGINE omg i need this like i need air

- Ben with bruce banner for obvious reasons “oh you turn into an uncontrollable green monster? cool i have tentacles coming out of my body that i use to kill people! also i’m dead”

- Vanja with scarlet witch because they would make such a great duo??? i mean they’re the most powerful ones. also the conversation would start like this: “i had a twin brother” “just one? past tense?? lucky”
