Six Rivers National Forest, California
This loop may include Jeep trails, but it can only be completed on foot. I explored some ridges and met Mad River Rock.

The Smith House or Sidman’s Tavern along Route 17 in the Ramapo Pass is an important New York and Sloatsburg historical asset that also has a plot of pre-Revolutionary War Cemetery and last vestiges of the Clove Road, or Revolutionary War Highway. Photo Credit: SloatsburgVillage.com

It was mid-May, 2018, when the chainsaws bit the air in a flurry of activity at the site fast-becoming Ramapo Woodmont Apartments. The massive apartment development along Route 17 just south of Sloatsburg, NY, is located at the former, longtime home base of the Ramapo Land Company, and, as an historical note, is the last bit of a land tract that dates back to the very beginning of what is now Sloatsburg.

Trees were cleared, earth was moved and the huge excavated area, which for many years was sloping woodland and nearly hidden from view, was suddenly exposed brown dirt, complete with those familiar Rockland County boulders.
The Town of Ramapo Planning Board approved Woodmont in 2014, the waning days of Christopher St. Lawrence long run as town supervisor. The Village of Sloatsburg battled the development throughout the planning board process and, even after approval, into Supreme Court in Rockland County. The Village lost an Article 78 decision in 2015 but was able to stall the proposed project until construction finally broke ground.

Where Sloatsburg Started
With the removal of the thick tree coverage, the old white Smith House has been left standing like some lonely sentinel left over from a bygone era. It is known more recently as the former home of the Pierson Mapes family. But it’s history goes way back to the very beginnings of what would become Sloatsburg.
Before Stephen Sloat married Martha Van Dusen and built the Sloat House in or around 1753-55, there was the Van Dusen Tavern. Built by Issac Van Dusen possibly around 1714, the origins of the old house and tavern remain in the foundation stones, timbers and walls of the Smith House, or as it was widely known in its time — Sidman’s Tavern.
Tumblr media
Part of Ramapo’s 2014 Planning Board agreement with Woodmont Properties, the New Jersey developer building Ramapo Woodmont, calls for the dedication to the Town of the Smith House (historically known as Sidman’s Tavern), a pre-Revolutionary War Cemetery next door and the last vestiges of the old Clove Road or Albany Highway. The Clove Road ran north/south to the west of the Smith House and parallel to what is now Route 17.
The Albany Post Road was the Colonial and Revolutionary War north/south land route from lower New York to Albany. The road followed the Ramapo River Valley through the Ramapo Mountains. The Ramapo Pass, also known at the Clove (from the Dutch kloof, which means chasm or gap), was strategically defendable at the bottleneck in Hillburn, NY.
During the pre and post Revolutionary War period, the Albany Highway was a main route and circled from the Hudson River through these parts and then north, curling to Albany. People riding through the Clove Road only had a few public houses to spend a safe night.
Taken together, these historical assets provide the origination story of Sloatsburg.
The dedication to the Town has put Ramapo and Woodmont into a predicament as Ramapo has been trying to reduce it’s historical property portfolio, leaving Woodmont in a sort of limbo about what to do with the Smith House/Sidman’s Tavern.
Woodmont Properties General Counsel Stephen Santola has said that Woodmont intends to preserve the Revolutionary War Cemetery. The Woodmont plans also calls for an historical marker to acknowledge the Albany Highway/Clove Road — with eventual input and oversight of the project by the Town of Ramapo Historian (currently Craig Long).
But both Ramapo and Woodmont are uncertain just what to do with the dilapidated Sidman’s Tavern, which has stood empty now for nearly 20 years.
The Historical Society of Rockland County and a contingent of Sloatsburgers prefer that the house be preserved and rehabilitated. Taken together the house, cemetery and vestiges of New York’s original highway provide a unique trifecta of historical assets for this area — and imbue the Ramapo Woodmont Apartments with a certain significance. Some wonder why the house can’t be restored during the building phase of Woodmont and then used by the property as a sort of public space.
Sloatsburg’s Original Land Grant: The Ramapo Clove
According to historical records documented by Corridor Through the Mountain by Richard Koke (written for the Orange County Historical Society), Isaac Van Deusen (also spelled Van Deursen and/or Van Duzen) came to the Ramapo Clove in 1724 with his father and settled on land purchased from the local Indians by John Van Blarcum. Clove is a Dutch word for a narrow valley with steep hills surrounding it.
Van Deusen land in the Ramapo Pass consisted of two main tracts that, together, shaped the Ramapo Valley and Sloatsburg. The northern “Pothat” tract was purchased from local Indians in 1738 by Dutch settler and Isaac Van Deusen brother-in-law, Wynant Van Gelder, and the southern tract, purchased from Van Blarcum.
Tumblr media
Part of the original stone and timber foundation of Sidman’s Tavern which could date back to the early 1700s.
In 1747, Van Gelder deeded the Pothat tract to Van Deusen and it was this tract that was deeded to Stephen Sloat in 1763 when he married Marretje Van Deusen, daughter of Isaac Van Deusen — the marriage apparently took place in the mid 1750s. These Sloat lands eventually became the Village of Sloatsburg and ranged from the current boundary line of Sloatsburg at the Orange/Rockland County line in the north to the Sloatsburg village line in the south near Auntie El’s. The tract ran from where the New York Thruway now snakes all the way west to Sterling Mine Road, and had the Ramapo River running through the middle.

Excerpt from Richard J. Koke’s Corridor Through the Mountains (see full link below)
Smith’s Clove: Wartime Line of Communication and Passageway for the Continental Army, 1776-1783. Published and copyrighted by the Orange County Historical Society.
English born Samuel Sidman entered the Ramapo Clove in 1746 and shortly thereafter married Isaak Van Deusen’s daughter Angneitje Van Deusen — making Stephen Sloat his eventual brother-in-law. Stephen Sloat went on to build Sloat’s Tavern, probably in the 1750s — the rear part still stands as part of the Sloat House & Inn and the entire house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Sidman’s wife Angneitje Van Deusen was born at her father’s tavern in 1724 — which would make the Smith House or Sidman’s Tavern the oldest commercial and residential structure in these parts, and one of the oldest in Ramapo. Sidman and Angneitic inherited the tavern and lands south of the Pothat/Sloat tract in the Ramapo Valley which included all the land that is now known as Torne Valley.
Tumblr media
A cemetery stone found at the Revolutionary War Cemetery next to Sidman’s Tavern or the Smith House at the current Ramapo Woodmont Apartment development.
Both Sidman’s Tavern and Sloat’s Tavern, a mere mile north of Sidman’s, were two of the original seven Revolutionary War taverns above the New Jersey line on the Clove Road, that also included John Suffern’s Tavern.
Of the seven original taverns along the Clove Road, Sidman’s and the Sloat Tavern (now known as the Sloat House & Inn) may be the sole remaining structures from the pre-Revolutionary War period.
Sidman and John Suffern were signatures in 1775 of the General Association which pledged support of the Continental Congress.
The cemetery beside Sidman’s Tavern dates to before the American Revolution and is the known burial plot for the Van Deuser family, including Samuel Sidman who died in late 1777 or 1778. Significantly, the cemetery beside Sidman’s Tavern was likely used to bury members of the Colonial army who died while guarding the Ramapo Pass.
Woodmont and Ramapo and Historical Preservation
Tumblr media
A photograph of the old Clove Road, a remnant of the original New York and Albany Post Road, also known as the Revolutionary War Highway, which ran through Rockland County and, significantly, the Village of Sloatsburg. Parts of Clove Road road in this area of Orange and Rockland Counties eventually became Orange Turnpike/Route 17.
To date, the fate of the Smith House is undecided. Woodmont awaits Ramapo’s direction and Ramapo possibly awaits whether preservation is worth the effort.
The Smith House at Ramapo Woodmont is part of the story of Sloatsburg. As importantly, the three assets are nationally significant and their preservation would celebrate the character and culture of the Village of Sloatsburg, Hudson Valley and New York State, especially as the nation prepares to mark the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.

Coast Report
Fishing the North Coast reports on 3.1.18
Storms breathe new life into steelhead rivers
fishingthenorthcoast
Following a dry and unseasonably warm first half of February, there is finally some good news to report – widespread rain and heavy mountain snowfall are imminent across nearly all of California. For the North Coast, weather models are indicating above normal precipitation in the coming weeks, which could turn March into a heck of a month for steelhead fishing. Up until these last storms that hit on Sunday and Monday, the majority of the coastal rivers were running on fumes. Other than the main stem Eel, everything was low and clear, and steelhead were few and far between. The few fish that were being caught were low in the river systems, which could indicate there’s plenty of fish just waiting for the rivers to rise. Could we be in for another “Miracle March” ? I sure hope so.
The weather ahead “We should see some decent rainfall totals over the next week, and we’ll continue to see low elevation snow”, said Ryan Aylward of Eureka’s National Weather Service. “We’ll see mostly rain on Wednesday, with two-thirds to an inch falling at the coast and one to one and a half in the mountains. Beginning Thursday, snow levels will drop to around 1,500 to 2,500 feet. We could see another two-thirds of an inch of rain, with snow falling above 2,500 feet. Friday’s forecast is calling for roughly the same. Rain will taper off on Saturday with only three-tenths falling in the mountains and maybe a half in Del Norte. Between Wednesday and Saturday, we’ll see about two inches of rain in Humboldt and up to three inches in Crescent City. Southern Humboldt could see three to four inches. Six to seven inches is forecasted for the hills, but most of that will fall as snow. Sunday and Monday are looking mostly dry, but there is another storm sitting off the coast that will hit sometime on Tuesday. The timing of this one is uncertain right now. It is looking like we’ll be in a wet pattern all next week, but the rainfall amounts are uncertain. It does look like we’ll see above average precipitation for the next few weeks.”
Klamath/Trinity springers could be added to protected list Following a 90-day review, the National Marine Fisheries Services (NMFS) on Tuesday published a notice in the Federal Register stating that the petition filed by the Karuk Tribe and the Salmon River Restoration Council to add Klamath Spring Chinook to the Endangered Species List provides “substantial information” and that “listing may be warranted” according to a press release. The federal fisheries’ move comes after a UC Davis study showed the spring Chinook are more of an evolutionary rarity than realized when compared to Fall Chinook salmon that return later in the year. Before the age of dams, industrial mining, and clear-cut logging, spring Chinook salmon were the most abundant run of salmon in the Klamath and many other Pacific Northwest Rivers. Today these fish are nearly extinct throughout much of their historic range. The report led the Karuk Tribe and the Salmon River Restoration Council to petition NMFS to add Klamath-Trinity spring Chinook the Endangered Species List.
Spring Chinook enter rivers in the spring when snow melt swells rivers allowing the fish to travel into the upper reaches of a watershed. Then they must reside in cold water areas all summer until they spawn and die in the fall. Fall Chinook migrate into rivers in the fall where they spawn and die relatively soon after entering fresh water.
Tuesday’s notice initiates a 60-day public comment period to solicit information on Chinook salmon in the Upper Klamath/Trinity Basin. To read the notice or comment, visit https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2018/02/27/2018-03906/endangered-and-threatened
Marc Scarr, pictured left along with brother Mike, landed the biggest fish during last weekend’s Rowdy Creek Fish Hatchery Steelhead Derby. The steelhead, which measured 38-inches, was caught on the Chetco River with guide Chris Griffeth. Photo courtesy of Chris Griffeth/Get Sum Guide Service
The Rivers: Chetco/Elk/Sixes “The Chetco was back in shape on Tuesday, and just about everybody was catching fish,” said Andy Martin of Wild Rivers Fishing. “Drift boats caught a mix of fresh hatchery and wild steelhead, and some downers, from the South Fork clear down to the water tower. The heavy rain in the forecast could blow the river out for the weekend, especially if the snow along the upper river melts. Should be good fishing again next week. The Elk fished well Monday, but was slower Tuesday. A few boats went to the Sixes on Tuesday but reported limited success. The Elk fishes best in high water, and should be in decent shape this weekend.”
Smith River The Smith was low and clear over the weekend and fishing was tough. A total of 17 fish were caught during the two-day derby by a total of 80 anglers. The rains finally came on Sunday, and the river went up a couple feet by Monday. Unfortunately, the fishing didn’t improve much. Boats drifting from the top to the bottom reported very few fish caught. Another good rise is forecasted for Wednesday into Thursday, with flows hitting 12,000 cfs on the Jed Smith gauge by Thursday night. Hopefully we’ll see a new batch of fish enter the river, and we should see some more spawned out fish making their way down.
Eel River (main stem) The rain over the weekend added some color, but the main stem never blew out reports Fred Grundman of Rio Dell’s Grundmans Sporting Goods. “The river didn’t rise all that much, mostly because of the freezing in the mountains held the water back. We’ve had a real good stretch of fishable water this month, and the fishing has been pretty productive. There’s quite a few boats around, and they’re here for a reason. With the storms coming later this week, it looks like the main stem will blow out early Thursday morning,” Grundman added. The Eel is predicted to jump from 1,300 cfs to nearly 20,000 by Friday night.
Eel River (South Fork) Not much to report for the last couple weeks, but the storms on the way should get the ball rolling again. Flows were right around 350 cfs on Wednesday afternoon and forecasted to hit 7,400 cfs by Friday morning. It will be blown out for the weekend, but could come back into play sometime next week, depending on the next round of storms. When the water turns green, there should be plenty of fish around – both fresh and downers.
Van Duzen According to Grundman, the Van Duzen was muddy on Tuesday. If the forecast holds, flows are predicted to jump from 315 to 2,750 cfs by Thursday morning.
Mad River The Mad has been pretty quiet this week reports Justin Kelly of RMI Outdoors in Eureka. “There’s not a lot of hatchery fish in the river right now, which is likely why the pressures been light. The fish, which have been mostly wild, are still scattered. You can catch them from top to bottom. We’ve got a pretty good rise coming on Thursday, that will hopefully trigger some more fish to come in,” Kelly added.
According to Philip Bairrington, Anadromous Fisheries Resource Assessment and Monitoring Program for CDFW, 52 pairs of Mad River steelhead have been spawned as of Tuesday. He said, “On a normal year we would have spawned 104 by now. It is turning out to be a lower run amplitude year. I predict we’ll spawn another 10 to 20 pairs by the end of the hatchery’s spawning season. We’ll be okay, thanks to the Mad River Steelhead Stewards Volunteer Program.”

@LoreeMcKague: @NikkiSixx Oh man, I'm so jealous. Gosh, I miss living next to a river and dipping my line into one of the best fishing holes with my dad. We had salmon in the Van Duzen, and my dad had the gift of catching them. Me, I caught trout. Ruby could be your trout River buddy one day. 😊 🐟 https://t.co/RxTNiVxTCW

Bridgeville
This is Bridgeville, California, the first town ever to be auctioned on eBay.  And auctioned and auctioned.   Not a bad piece of dirt, and your prospective tenants seem like a bunch of chill dudes (pictured via Google maps)  There’s about 10 houses and 81 acres of land fronting the Van Duzen River way up north in Humboldt County. And one post office. And a private zip code, 95526. And a school district with a public elementary school. And a volunteer fire department. It’s attracted the attention of several interesting characters as potential developers but at the end of the day, it’s just an out-of-the-way classic California town, crumbling, undervalued, yet somehow still defiant. It’s a world away from San Francisco and Los Angeles. The old bridge was built in 1875, if you think about it, that’s hardly 30 years after the Donner party wagon train and the Oregon trail. At the time the place was called Robinson’s ferry after local awesomely named hooligan William Slaughter Robinson. Pictured is the new bridge, for Highway 36. It’s just upstream from Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park -  the haven of conservationist and lumberman Owen R. Cheatham founder of Georgia Pacific Plywood and Lumber Company, who set aside the thousand acres of virgin redwood forest as a park in the early 1900s. It’s where George Lucas shot the ewok scenes from what was once known as Star Wars III. So if you visit, drive slowly and remember to look at the road, or you may crash your car into a tree and go up in an improbably large fireball.
Or you could anger a forest god or something

Payday Loans rely upon specific income for their repayments (such as your next paycheck or a pending tax refund). Moreover, an Auto Title Loans is designed to give much larger Loan amounts (thousands of dollars) and can be paid back over a longer period of time (usually 12 to 36 months). To puts it simply, a Payday Loan could be seen as a temporary fix, whereas an Auto Title Loans is designed to fulfill your longer financial needs.

Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park – Health, Inspiration and Education
Beyond Cuckoo took to the road last week to find sanity among the Redwood Forests of Northern California. We camped at Grizzly Creek, a small and mighty nook of a place, along the Van Duzen River in Humboldt County. It’s not surprising that we often look to nature to understand where we’ve been and our potential to become sturdy and strong like the Redwoods.
Redwoods have 66 or more chromosomes (six copies of each chromosome) which help the tree fight disease. When attacked the tree has a chance to protect itself. These trees can intercept dense coastal fog and absorb it through their leaves to stay hydrated during dry summers. Which brings us to the issue of climate change. I’m saddened that this term is over-used to the point that it has lost meaning. However, one trip in nature brings the point home.
We were fortunate to arrive at our destination on a day that included a campfire program about owls. Who knew that there was so much controversy surrounding habitats for the Northern Spotted Owl, the Barred Owl and a recently sighted hybrid, the Sparred Owl? I’ve included links for you to investigate and learn about these complicated issues.
Inspiration comes with getting outside. Grizzly Creek is a traveler’s and a local’s destination. The day use area is a popular picnic and swimming spot. Well-marked hiking trails allowed me to venture off for a “tree bath” and a few conversations with the nature spirits. At the nearby Owen R, Cheatham Grove where George Lucas filmed the Return of the Jedi, I swear I saw an Ewok or two peering out from under the forest ferns.
Finally, I encourage you to become familiar with the work of the Save The Redwood League. They have been paramount in protecting redwood forests since 1918 and helped to keep Grizzly Creek open during the dismal state budget years.

Bear River Casino, Loleta, CA
Had a good night sleep in Red Bluff, despite the heat. Turned off the A/C at 11:30 and climbed into bed…did not even hear Marcia when she came to bed just a little later.  Left at 9:00 am, but ran into a minor problem…for some reason the TV antenna did not go down in the proper position, and rattled something fierce as we started to depart the park.  Took me a bit to realize what it was, then when I tried to raise it so that I could position it right, the handle pops off and the handle, positioner and spring land on top of the slide out, which was, of course, “in” for travel.  Then, as I tried to crank the antenna up, I break the handle.  (This is like the fifth or sixth time I have broken a cheap plastic handle since 1986 when I first started living in a 5th wheel!)  Anyway, by 10 am we were rolling out of Red Bluff.
I had decided to give California highway 36 a shot…not pulling the HHR, it seemed like it would be a nice scenic route.  Scenic it was…nice for 90% of it, but it was very hard near the Humboldt/Trinity County line…at times it was barely better than a one lane road.  But that only lasted about five or six miles…and there were three or four sections which had road work being done, with about 5 minute wait at one area until the escort truck arrived and took us along the road for about three miles.
We were going to stay at the Swimmers Campground at the Van Duzen County Park, along the Van Duzen river…but there was no Internet, so we drove on.  My back up plan was where we are, the Bear River Casino just outside of Fortuna in Loleta.  I had to get a player’s card in order to register…but there is no cost to stay up to three nights..and they put $10 on the player's card to entice you to gamble.  We were the first RV to arrive, at 3:30 pm, but now there are about ten RVs in the parking lot.  We can come and go as we wish, and tomorrow we will probably drive over to the ocean, about ten miles away, and find a place to stop and enjoy…after the morning fog burns off.  By the way…when we arrived at the Safeway in Fortuna it was a blistering 72 degrees.

Coastal Steelhead Report
Kenny Priest at Fishing the North Coast Reports on 2.15.2018
While the lack of rain has most steelhead anglers singing the blues, there are however, a few bright spots. Especially if you like to throw on a pair of waders and head to the river bar. The Mad River is probably as good now as it’s been all season. With plenty of bank access, it’s probably the best steelhead option at the moment. The river is on the low side, but the snowmelt has kept the color a beautiful shade of green. Chrome-bright hatchery steelhead are being caught by anglers working the river from the hatchery to the bridge. Both the South Fork Eel and the Van Duzen are getting too low for boats, but both have excellent bank fishing opportunities. Neither is chalked full of fish, but if you put your time in, a steelhead or two is not out of the question. You’ll want to cover some water, so comfortable wading shoes are a must. If you’d rather fish from a drift boat, you’re options are somewhat limited. The main Eel is your best bet as it still has plenty of green water. There’s also a real good chance of catching a few bright steelies. The Klamath and Trinity rivers are both good options as well. Both are green, and should have their share of winter steelhead moving through. With no substantial rain since the end of January, and very little predicted for the coming weeks, the coastal rivers are all headed towards low and clear conditions. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t ample opportunities to hook into a big ole’ winter steelhead.
The weather ahead “We’re heading into a more active pattern, but it doesn’t look like we’re going to see a lot of rain over the next two weeks,’ said Ryan Aylward of Eureka’s National Weather Service. “We’re going to see some low elevation snow, but not much in the way of moisture. The systems will be coming down from the north, which if they stay inland we’ll see mostly snow. If they come down near the coast, they can pick up moisture and we could see some rain. The next system should arrive on Sunday, with snow levels around 1,800 feet. A quarter-inch of rain is expected, but it will likely fall as snow. Another half-inch is forecasted for Monday, but with snow levels dropping to 700 feet, we won’t see much rain. Unfortunately, the next couple weeks are looking like we’ll see below normal precipitation.”
The Rivers:
Chetco/Elk/Sixes “The Chetco is now at its lowest level of the season, and steelhead fishing is hit and miss,” said Andy Martin of Wild Rivers Fishing. “During the cloudy and rainy weather on Sunday most boats had at least a couple of fish. With clear weather on Monday and Tuesday it was slow again. There are fish but they are easily spooked right now. This weekend’s rain isn’t expected to increase flows much, but could get the fish in the river to bite better. Boat pressure has been light as most of the out of town guides have moved to other rivers. The Elk and Sixes are low, clear and slow right now and very few anglers are trying.”
Chico resident Evan Oetinger landed this nice winter steelhead on a recent trip to the Smith River. With very little rain in the forecast, coastal rivers are running low and clear, making conditions tough for steelhead anglers. Photo courtesy of Evan Oetinger
Smith River The Smith remains low and clear and in need of a good shot of rain. Flows were 7-feet on the Jed Smith gauge on Wednesday and dropping. Boat pressure has been light as most guides have moved to other rivers. There are reportedly a few fish around, but overall, fishing is tough.
Eel River (main stem) The main stem is in great shape and holding a nice shade of green. Boat pressure was fairly heavy over the weekend, but has since slowed. Boats are averaging one to four fish per trip. There’s some nice adults in the mix and some bluebacks have shown up. There’s also a good number of half-pounders around. Flows are predicted right around 1,800 cfs by Saturday.
Eel River (South Fork) According to Darren Brown of Brown’s Sporting Goods in Garberville, the river is low, but there’s still a few boats drifting. He said, “There were a couple boats at Sylvandale on Tuesday, but it’s definitely gotten quiet. Most boats have moved way down on the South Fork or to the main stem,” Brown added. Flows are predicted to be around 375 cfs on Saturday.
Van Duzen The Van Duzen is getting skinny, with flows hovering around 275 cfs on Wednesday. A few fish were caught by boats earlier in the week, but it’s getting too low to drift. The water is clearing, but bank anglers are still finding a few fish.
Mad River The Mad is in great shape and holding color reports Justin Kelly of Eureka’s RMI Outdoors. “The fishing definitely got better this week, seems like there’s more fish around now. All the deep holes are holding fish. The fish are scattered throughout the river, but from the hatchery to the bridge has been good. There’s a pretty good mix of both wild and hatchery fish around, and lots of bright ones in the mix too.’ added Kelly.

Coastal Steelhead Report
Fishing The North Coast Reports on 2.7.2017:
Following another week of heavy rain and soaring river levels, green water is finally on the horizon for two of the quick-clearing coastal rivers. Sunshine is in the forecast for the weekend, and Monday and Tuesday are looking dry as well. For steelhead anglers, this means both the Smith and Chetco will be on the drop and heading towards greener waters. Boats should be back to side-drifting Sunday on the Smith, and possibly by Monday on the Chetco. For the rest of the coastal rivers, no such luck. They’ll remain high and muddy and won’t clear before the next round of storms roll through starting next Wednesday. As it’s been the case all year, expect a crowd if you plan to fish either of these rivers once they turn green.
The weather ahead “Precipitation will be with us through Friday, but we’ll finally see a few nice days beginning this weekend,” said Ryan Aylward of Eureka’s National Weather Service. “We’ll likely see anywhere from three to five inches fall between Wednesday and Thursday, with the heaviest rain falling Thursday morning. Showers are in the forecast for Friday, with possibly an inch falling in Del Norte and a half-inch in Eureka. A high pressure will build, keeping us dry from Saturday through Monday. We may see a slight shower on Tuesday, with rain returning on Wednesday as we head into another wet pattern. Several systems are forecasted to hit the North Coast through the following weekend.”
The Rivers:
Chetco “The Chetco was fishing fair last week before the big rain started on Friday”, said Andy Martin of Wild Rivers Fishing. “Now it looks like it will be blown out until early next week. We should see good numbers of hatchery and wild fish when it comes back into shape, although there were some down runners already being caught before the river blew out.
Smith River The Smith has been bouncing back and forth between 14 and 19 feet on the Jed Smith gauge since last weekend. It was back on the rise as of early Wednesday, and predicted to reach nearly 25 feet by midday Thursday. With very light rain forecasted for Friday, it will drop quickly and should be under 13 feet and driftable by Sunday. Earlier this week, boats plunking between Ruby and the water tower were picking up a few steelhead while the flows were receding.
Eel and Van Duzen Rivers The main stem Eel, South Fork Eel, and the Van Duzen were all on the drop as of Wednesday. That’s the good news. Bad news is they are all forecasted for steep rises on Thursday, with the main Eel and Van Duzen both predicted to surpass flood stage. The South Fork Eel is supposed to hit monitor stage Thursday evening. It’s doubtful any of these rivers will fish prior to the next round of storms, especially the main Eel.
Mad River According to Justin Kelly of Eureka’s RMI Outdoors, the liners did pretty well this past weekend. “From what I heard, it was probably the best fishing so far this season. I also heard there’s quite a few fish in the ladder. The next storm coming will likely push the water level past monitor stage on Thursday, but it looks like it will drop quickly. Liners should be able to get back on the water by Sunday,” Kelly added.
