I think that Gru and Maxime are "exes".

Here's my explanation (copy and pasted from discord messages i sent):

i was thinking about gru and maxime being "exes" and i thought of a possible headcanon that could be tied to that

i think that neither gru or maxime were particularly popular when they first started at lychee pas bon - gru because he is generally offputting, and maxime because of the cockroach thing

gru would tend to keep to himself, while maxime would try to hang around more popular kids to try to fit in

at some point the kids would want to pull a prank on gru, and would use maxime for that because he was the least liked and they wanted to see how far he'd go to gain their friendship - that prank would be to ask gru to date him and pretend to be his boyfriend for a while. very mean-spirited, but something that should be expected from a bunch of future villains

maxime would ask, and gru - not realising it was a prank - would say yes. he'd be excited to have someone to hang out with

after a while of maxime pretending to like gru, he'd actually start catching feelings, as gru would be the only person to care about his interest in cockroaches. theyd be happy

that is, until maxime's "friends" would push him into telling gru that the whole thing was a "prank"

their relationship would end, and their rivalry would begin

i also think that when maxime tells him its a prank hed be mean about it and thats where hed start calling him "gru-ser the loser"

i imagine that after that interaction gru goes home and cries to the minions snd they all try to do things to make him feel better 🙁🙁

maxime would go home and talk to his cockroaches about it. i envision this event to be the beginning of (my version of) maxime's imminent descent into derangement

I think that Gru and Maxime are “exes”

After-events of the “breakup”:

like i said in the other post (https://www.tumblr.com/dev-fan-fr/758214194466275330/i-think-that-gru-and-maxime-are-exes) the reactions that gru and maxime would have to their "breakup" would be vastly different

gru would go home, as it would have been revealed at the end of the school day that the entire thing was a prank, and rush down to his lab almost immediately.

he'd be feeling incredibly embarrassed, and would probably usher all of the minions out of the lab so that he could start to plot his "revenge" on maxime. I think that after a few hours or so gru would be approached by dr nefario - or even wild knuckles - who would give him the chance to vent out his upset over the whole maxime thing.

maxime wouldnt go home after the breakup, i think that he likes to spend most of his time outside of school in parks and forests because of his spinterest (cockroaches and insects in general). he would sit down by a tree or something, and just think.

obviously, he'd be racked with guilt over the whole thing, but would try to convince himself that he did the right thing. after all, he does want to be a villain, right? what he did was bad, it was evil. thats good.

this whole experience, and the pressure i think his parents would put on him to be a great villain, would cause maxime to begin to prioritise himself, his popularity/status, and his power over all else and everyone else, as well as when he'd start to lose the ability to empathise with others out of a need to protect himself

also, because angst makes me sad and because i would like to bring joy to those who’ve read this, i drew marppy. i think theyre neat

DESPICABLE ME HEADCANON TIME!!!

personally i think the conditions in the AVL prison are really good for the inmates and that the prison would have more of a focus on kind of rehabilitating their inmates over just containing them

obviously none of the main villains of the series would be allowed out of the prison without any kind of supervision, because they are SUPERVILLAINS and - even after being 'rehabilitated' - they would still be pretty dangerous.

one thing i think they would do is have group therapy sessions to help towards rehabilitation and everyone seems fine with them.

bratt likes the therapist and thinks shes nice, vector takes part but finds it kind of boring, perez thinks the sessions are pleasant but he doesnt really need them, valentina just goes because maxime has to go though she also doesnt really need it, the villains from minions come and go as they please - theyre all fairly calm and dont need the therapy as much as the newer guys.

then theres maxime.

maxime. does not like therapy. he doesnt like the therapist. he hates everything about group therapy and thinks its a waste of time, he has to be tied down to his chair for him just to be there

out of everyone in therapy, maxime probably needs it the most, because he really really needs to work on:

his temperment

his obsession with murdering gru

his vendetta against literally everyone

his ability to hold grudges for way longer than he should be able to

not solving his problems via murder or violent death threats

his violent tendencies in general, actually

his crumbling mental health (he is actually insane)

he doesnt think he needs to work on any of those, though

i think that after a while of group therapy and group activities and such, maxime would start liking a few of the other inmates

his favourite thing to do is mess with people, his usual target would be bratt, but overtime his constant targeting of him would make bratt kinda grow on him

theyd become friends and start tormenting vector instead because hes easy to mess with

AGHHHH OC COMING YOUR WAY DONT WORRY SHES RELEVANT!!!

meet: Dr Bingo! a therapist in the avl prison! 'Bingo' is just a codename she chose for herself, because she thought it sounded fun and would make her less intimidating - as well as be a good protection for her actual name and identity.

bingo covers both group and one-on-one therapy sessions, as well as interventions and group activities. shes literally just there for the inmates to rehabilitate -- she also handles the i mates getting visits. regulars that visit the dm villains are:

gru and dru, for bratt - dru and bratt are best friends, and bratt likes to give dru a variety of tips and advice for dru to become a better villain, while dru brings bratt bubblegum to fuel his poorly hidden addiction

gru and antonio perez, for eduardo perez

just gru for vector because his dad is also in prison

gru for maxime. not because he likes rubbing it in that maxime is in prison - which maxime thinks hes there for - but because he just likes checking in on him

gru likes to regularly check up on his many enemies to see how they are, he also likes to hear about whatever the hell they might be trying to scheme against him (none of those schemes will come to fruition, they arent gonna break out). visiting his enemies is one of his favourite things to do on his days off :^)

despite doing a lot of work in the prison, shes underpaid for what she does. the worst part of her job is having to deal with unnecessarily aggressive and violent inmates, namely: maxime.

most of her one-on-one sessions are with maxime when he gets arrested, and it takes a very long time for him to actually participate in either kinds of therapy. the most she gets out of him for the first few months are death threats and aggressive verbal warnings (only because maxime is always like tied to his chair during therapy, for bingo's safety)

all of the other inmates seem to like bingo a lot more than maxime does, as theyre all on fairly friendly terms with her

bratt really likes her, though, and is always happy to see her :^) theyre friends!

i could write a lot more here about bingo, like how she has a girlfriend or why she decided to become a therapist in the first place, but this post is already super long so. thatll have to wait for another time. toodles!
