I have been participating in #13days13shorts since it started 11 years ago in October of 2007. A year after Omar and I graduated from San Jose High School (formally known as San Jose High Academy). Every year @omarnajamfilm out does himself with amazing theme selections and ways of including everyone from beginners to those of us who are seasoned. Each year I pick 1 to 3 themes and I try to be creative in some way. The submissions that 13 Days 13 Shorts gets are no joke there are some really amazing talented people out there and happy to say that my submissions are sprinkled in there surrounded by the best. This year I’ve decided to #challenge myself and submit for every day and every theme. “Vampire with a Toothache.  I know, I know, it’s serious.”

Vlad is not a fan of The Smiths.  He is not a fan of dentists even more.  So how he ended up laying almost completely reclined in a polyester-lined chair that started upright but then whirred and whined back is beyond what his 300+ year mind can handle.  

“It’s Halloween,” She said.  “Let’s go Trick-or-Treating,” She said.

“She” is Larissa and “She” is way too young for him at 87 years to his 300+.  But his therapist told him he needed to get out there and date again.  He’d been pining for his Sire for way too long and it’s not Vlad’s fault that his Sire had become disenchanted with his 1,728 years on the planet Earth and chose to walk out of his crypt and into the morning sunlight one morning with no explanation.  No note, no words to any of his creations.  Not that there were many left these days.  There’s Vlad, Cordelia, Pumpkin (not his real name but they’d been calling him that since the 70s and it just sort of stuck).

Which brings Vlad back to this present moment.  The dentist is a “Friend of the Order of the Fangs”, which was a ridiculous secret society created in 1932 during the height of the Golden Age of Hollywood when vampires decided it was a good idea to get some human helpers with power in the human world to do the tasks (AKA: being in the daylight) that the vampires couldn’t do themselves.  So basically, human pets hidden behind a cult with fancy ceremonies and rituals to make them feel special and keep them in line.

“Both the fangs have got to go,” the dentist was saying.  “I’ve never seen tooth rot this bad in a human before, let alone a vampire.  What the heck have you been feeding on?,” he asked judgmentally.

Vlad had been feeding on Timmy but Vlad didn’t want to admit that to this lapdog.  Feeding on children was a no-no.  Even after Sire walked into oblivion, that rule stayed in effect even though the nest chose to drop many of the others.  No feeding on Sundays was gone.  So was wearing orange after Devil’s Night (no one even remembers the origins of that one).  Oh and they could ride on elevators again, that was particularly handy.

Larissa assured Vlad that no one would possibly find out.  Timmy was an orphan and the nuns didn’t particularly like him.  How could she have known there was a witch’s curse on him?

Because you see, someone else already had their wicked heart set on Timmy’s delectable chubby body.  A particularly nasty witch named Sylvia Snitch and she’d been fattening Timmy up for the slaughter.  He was on a steady diet of enchanted Kit Kats and Snickers bars.  The nature of the enchantment was really a security measure...if any other magical creature was to sink their teeth and/or fangs, in Vlad’s case, into Timmy, they would then endure the worst torture that Sylvia could think of.

They’d have to go to the dentist.

“Will they grow back?,” Larissa asked with concern.
