Thrilling.

Cliff Steele is kidnapped by Garguax; Valentina Vostok is attacked by Reactron.

Sure, having your heroes attacked by villain is a lazy way for a writer to set a story in motion, but it really works here. In Cliff's case, it works because he finds himself in a brutal and unwinnable battle with a shocking conclusion. In Val's story, we are invested because teammate Larry Trainor is the one behind the attack on her. The ending here, too, is shocking. Cannot wait to read the next issue, and see how they get out of this.

I agree with you on Val Vostok and the Blood Pack, but Triumph totally lost the plot and got what was coming to him as a result.

(Although that was more because Morrison treated any incarnations of the Justice League between the end of the satellite era and his run as complete and total jokes. Comparing how the Detroit League was treated in JLI and how the JLI was treated in the Morrison book isn't a good look for Morrison.)

i have. things to say about tv val’s feelings on geiger counters as someone who was probably obsessively checking how radioactive she was in the hopes she’d be able to get a chance to hang out with her crewmates again and how she probably isolated herself in some corner of their ship for years with only that sound and the alien living inside her to keep her company

but also like. theres a song out there about how a geiger counter sounds just like a heartbeat and i think now that she’s back on earth she sometimes she listens to it and calls it ���our (her & her spirit’s) song”

i know boost has a post that’s almost exactly like this but the fact that these are all different characters some of whom have vastly different backstories from the others is the reason why comics are bad.

Arani, Val, and Josh are all living together and raising a clone baby and every year Val sends a picture of them to the doom patrol with a note that says “this could be you but you’re still living with that asshole you call team leader”

the only two ways val is allowed to show up in doom patrol is if she has her own negative spirit that happened because niles was trying to recreate larry’s accident in an attempt to access negative space but gives her a slightly different power set and no radioactivity (that’s a larry problem, not a negative problem) or if due to some weird manor hijinks larry ended up bedridden for like a year or so while the spirit inhabited negative woman and that’s why josh was so uncomfortable when larry asked if they meant. he didn’t want larry to know that the thing inside him temporarily belonged to josh’s ex and he’s not sure if they’re bitter about the break up
