Ch 4: Tujh Sang Bair Lagaya Aisa

“Khushiji, kaisi hai aap?” [Khushiji, how are you?] Shyam said, his face contorted into an expression of worry as he stepped closer. “Kya zarurat thi Rani Sahiba ko bachane ki? Woh toh hamare beech bas ek rukavat hai. Yahan hum itni koshish kar rahe hai unhe raste se hatane ki aur aap ho ki hamara kaam aur mushkil kar rahi hai.”

[What was the need to save Anjali? She is only an obstacle in our path. I am trying so hard to get rid off her but you are making my task more difficult.]

Khushi shrank back into the bed, anything to get further away from this monster. “Kaise insaan hai aap?” [What kind of person are you?] she shouted, “Chale jaiye yahan se!” [Just get the hell out of here!]

“Nahi, Khushiji, aap hume galat samajh rahi hai. Hume toh bas aapki parvah hai. Aapko khush dekhna chahte hai. Woh khushi jo sirf hum aapko de sakte hai.”

[No, Khushiji, you misunderstand me. I’m just concerned about you. I want you to be happy. And only I can make you happy in that way.]

“Kitni baar kehna padega ki door rahiye hamari behen se!” [How many times you need to be told to stay away from my sister!] Payal’s voice came from the doorway. She had brought Khushi’s medicines. “Aap jaise ghatiya aur gire hue insaan se hamara koi lena dena nahi hai.” [We have nothing to do with someone as sick and disgusting as you.]

“Aap ab aisa keh rahi hai. Lekin hum aapse vaada karte hai ki hum phir aap sab ka bharosa jeet lenge.” [You’re saying this now. But I promise you, I will win back your trust] he said as he walked out.

As soon as he was out of the room, Payal went over to Khushi and hugged her. “Hame maaf kardo ki tumhe inke saath ek hi chhat ke neeche rehna pad raha hai, Khushi. Hum jaante hai ki tum bahut niswaarthi ho lekin apna khayal rakhna kab seekhogi? Yehi wajah thi ki hum tumse naraaz the jab tumne jaldbaazi mein Arnavji se shaadi ki. Par phir hum samajh gaye ki woh tumhari raksha karenge.”

[I’m sorry that you have to live under the same roof as this man, Khushi. I know you have always been selfless, but when will you learn to take care of yourself? This is why I was angry with you when you impulsively married Arnavji. But then I understood that he would protect you.]

“Jiji, hum vaada karte hai ki hum apna khyal rakhenge.” [Jiji, I promise I will take care of myself] Khushi replied.

“Achha ab davai kha lo aur araam karo. Hume neeche kaam hai.” [Okay now take your medicine and rest. I need to go downstairs.]

Payal stepped out into the hallway and found her path blocked. Arnav was standing there. Having seen Shyam walk out of the room, he had ended his phone call but had stopped himself from entering when he overheard Payal talking to Khushi.

“Mujhe tumse bahut zaroori baat karni hai, Payal. Main Khushi aur Shyam ke baare mein jaanta hoon.” [Payal, I need to talk to you. I know about Khushi and Shyam.] He said. Payal was happy knowing that she could now speak openly with him and make sure that Khushi was safe. She walked with Arnav to her room so they could talk.

“Hume nahi pata ki aapko sachai kaise pata chali par hum bahut khush hai ki aap sab jaante hai. Humne socha that ki shaadi ke baad woh ghatiya insaan Khushi ko pareshaan karna chhod dega par yeh abhi bhi haath dhoke uske peeche pada hai. Lucknow se.”

[I don't know how you found out but I am very happy that you did. We had thought that this disgusting man would leave Khushi alone after her marriage but he still harasses her. Since Lucknow.]

“Lucknow se?” [Since Lucknow?] Arnav repeated. He was confused. This didn’t align with his facts. “Mujhe sab shuru se batao.” [Tell me everything from the beginning.]

So Payal proceeded to tell him everything—about how Khushi met Shyam in Lucknow when he saved her from the men who were harassing her after the video from the fashion show had been released. How he tricked Buaji into becoming a paying guest in their home and then got Khushi the job at AR. She told him about how Buaji pressured Khushi into the engagement, who only agreed to it on Diwali. She had seemed particularly disturbed that day and had cried all night. When Payal told him about the discovery of Shyam’s identity on the day of the Satyanarayan Puja, Arnav remembered seeing Khushi in tears, asking if her fiancé had hurt her. He heard about how, once again, Khushi had sacrificed her own happiness for his Di, when she saw her panic at the broken mangalsutra and decided not to tell the Raizada family, not to destroy Anjali’s faith.

He listened to all this in a daze, his own interactions with Khushi fitting into the puzzle. His guilt at having misunderstood and misjudged her was almost unbearable. But nothing hurt more than Payal’s final words:

“Holi ke din jab aapne Shyamji ko roka aur Khushi pe khud rang lagaya, tab Buaji, Amma aur hum bahut khush hue the. Kyunki hum samajh gaye the ki ab uski zindagi mein aisa koi hai jo use Shymaji jaise logon se bacha sakta hai, uska khayal rakh sakta hai. Usi din hum sab ne sirf Khushi ko hi nahi, aapko bhi maaf kar diya tha.”

[On the day of Holi, when you stopped Shyam from putting colour on her and did it yourself, Buaji, Amma and I were very happy. Because we had understood that now there was someone in her life who can protect her from people like Shyamji, someone who could look after her. That day we not only forgave Khushi, but you, too.]

Arnav found himself driving with no awareness of where he was. His mind was full of thoughts of Khushi, of the many times that she had shown genuine care and concern for him. And he had only given her pain in return.

She had taken care of him every time he was sick or hurt. That first time she had fed him a jalebi. The time she had stayed up all night taking care of him after he had fainted. Had tended to his wounds or bruises.

She defended the things he cared about; had prevented his company from being scammed, despite the fact that he had shouted at her for it. She had always looked after his family.

She understood what he needed before he realised it himself. Like when she brought one of his plants with her while they had to stay in Buaji’s house to make sure that he would have something familiar and comforting in this new setting. Or the time he lost his voice but she was able to convey his words to the world—better than his own family. She had even known when he called out to her, soundless.

The world spun around Arnav, his vision blurred. What had he done to have this beautiful, wondrous woman as a part of his life? Nothing. Her sister, her entire family thought that he protected her, took care of her. But they didn’t know that he was the real cause of her pain. He always had been. If he hadn’t released the fashion show footage, her reputation would not have been damaged, she would have never had to meet Shyam, or leave Lucknow.

Time and time again he had questioned her character and motives, had belittled her.

Itne mahino se main yehi soch raha hoon ki tum iss hadd tak kaise gir sakti ho.

[I have been wondering for months how you could stoop so low.]

It’s sad ki meri aur tumhari families tumse kitna pyaar karti hain. Kyunki tum unke pyaar ko deserve hi nahi karti. Achha hai ki tumhare mom aur dad aaj yeh din dekhne ke liye zinda nahi hai.

[It’s sad that our families love you so much. Because you don’t deserve it. It’s good that your parents aren’t alive to see this day.]

He had actually thought her capable of hurting Anjali, someone who Khushi had always looked out for, just as Arnav had.

Himmat kaisi hui tumhari meri Di ki zindagi ke saath khelne ki?

[How dare you play with my sister’s life?]

Main apni Di ke liye kuch bhi kar sakta hoon. Tum jaisi ladki se shaadi bhi.

Every time he had ended up doing something that revealed his feelings in any way, he had deliberately used his words to cover it up.

He had blackmailed her into marrying him, had not even told her what she had done; had not given her a chance to explain.

He had thrown her out to the poolside, made her sleep in the cold. On the day of the chauka puja he had grabbed her arm where she was burned, had once closed the window on her hand in his blind rage. He had hurt her, over and over again, and then held her responsible for it.

Tumse nafrat karne ke bavajood mujhe har roz tumhari shakal dekhni padti hai. Phas gaya hoon main chhe mahine ke liye tumhaare saath, iss stupid temporary marriage mein.

Her words came back to him then.

He had never felt the sting and truth of them more than he did in that moment.

The car swerved. The tires screeched to a halt.
