After dealing with an incredibly obnoxious work email exchange earlier, I have concluded that in a modern AU, Percy de Rolo would be the absolute king of passive-aggressive emails that trash the recipient via both wording and strategic CCs without ever saying something overtly rude/unreasonable.

As for the rest of VM:

Vex is probably second best at the passive-aggressive email, but a little too prone to slipping over into overtly aggressive that someone can push back on.

Scanlan is deeply persuasive, but he usually skips over passive-aggressive for charm or outright deception.

Keyleth occasionally attempts to write a passive-aggressive email because she thinks it's the kind of thing she should know how to do, but she usually overthinks it and lets her anxiety and tendency to over-explain get in the way.

Pike doesn't do passive-aggressive emails because it feels mean. If she's mad enough for the gloves to come off, she's going to confront the person directly.

Vax either full-on vents his spleen onto the keyboard or ghosts the person--no real middle ground. (He also has his email set up to automatically reject all read-receipt requests, so you won't even get the certainty of knowing that he opened the email and is deliberately refusing to respond.)

No one knows whether Grog is passive-aggressive in email, because it's too hard to tell one way or the other when they're exclusively written in emojis.

VM (Summer) Olympics AU (fed with info from the perc’ahlia server)

Percy: Shooting (duh) likely 10m or 25m pistol.

Vex: Archery (duh)

Vax: Sprinting (boots of haste)

Grog: Wrestling, or Judo, but honestly you can make a case for a lot of sports. Hammer throw? Weightlifting?

Pike: Rugby (she’s a monstah on the field)

Scanlan: Gymnastics (they’re all short kings)

Keyleth: Modern Pentathlon. Master of the four planes, master of five sporting disciplines. Backstory is that she originally entered the Olympics as a diver, bellyflopped so badly, then changed to pentathlon.

Taryon Darrington: look I forgot about my King until now. Sadly robotics isn’t an Olympic sport. Tempted to say something slightly random like table tennis.

Keyleth and Percy know each other through shooting (shooting is in the pentathlon, though it’s vastly different). All meet at the Olympics and became besties.

He attends with the intention of completing whatever requirements are necessary for him to move on with his life, while participating as little as possible. That is, until a fellow attendee throws a cold bucket of water (metaphorically and literally) on his plans.

Scanlan - I figured he would be the type to have a band in modern AU, and invite you to concerts

Grog - I see a boxer AU type with him, cheering him on at all his fights

Percy - a specialized craftsman type who runs his own shop, and you stopping by to visit to remind him to take breaks

Keyleth - probably going on dates to those botanical gardens or a greenhouse style date

Pike - either going for walks in the park or sneaking away in a library

Vex’ahlia - spa days, coffee shop dates or the fanciest dinners one could buy

Vax’ildan - night life style dates!! For some reason I see him as a painter/tattoo artist type, so you two have a night skyline view of a wall portrait he made, with you as the inspiration

Modern AU

It’s pretty obvious that Percy has always had a thing for you; and just about everyone could see it. You constantly visit all the time, talk all the time, spend the most time with each other.

Plus any text he gets makes him think it’s you first

The day everyone realized you two were together was when they noticed things you left behind at each other’s apartments (hoodies, glasses, etc.)

Hey yall! For my modern au, I have made Outfit Inspo Boards for all of VM!

First up is gonna be the ladies:) The dudes of vm will be here!

Keyleth: Keyleth loves fun patterns and funky clothes, she didn't have a lot of confidence to express herself growing up, so when she moved to Emon she took a box of Vilyas old clothes (vilya dressed vaguely hippie, she told me herself) and decided to try new things:) I think it took a while for her to reach this point in her style, she had to build the confidence and throughout the years she's bought a lot of second hand stuff, locally commissioned sweaters, handmade jewelry, and sewn her own maxi skirts. And it doesn't hurt that the flow and looseness of it is sensory friendly:).

Pike: Listennnn Pike works long hours and when she isn't working shes baking (and drinking) or sparring with Grog, she prioritizes being comfortable and practical. In uni her and keyleth would often go thrifting together as a way to decompress, but these days she mostly steals the graphic t-shirts straight out of Scanlans closet.

Vex: Look me in the eyes and tell me she wouldn't absolutely rock low-rise jeans. exactly. you cant. Anyways Vex works outside in the wilderness a lot so she also prioritizes practicality, but still knows how to look very good while doing so. Similar to Keyleth, Vex didn't have a lot of ways to express herself growing up outside archery, so I think she takes a lot of pride in her style. plus, wink wink nudge nudge she wear he coat

Ok ok ok we all collectively will not shut up about how Percy is endeared by Vex's ears, right? well UNO REVERSE CARD! His lil round human ears are so fucking cute to Vex. It's also very funny for her to parse out how sensitive they are vs half-elven or elven ears.

In modern AUs their taste in music seems very different at a glance but meshes SUPER well. Percy is rocking to MCR and anime intros and Fallout Boy and old rock'n'roll (that his dad and Julius loved), Vex is grinding to pop and country, and everyone is like 'surely not' until they pull up to give Pike a ride and are just blasting a Taylor Swift song together (she joins in obviously). Or on a train sharing earbuds and the poor folks the next seats over can hear Monster by Skillet from there and these two are mouthing along and sharing Dramatic Looks.

Trinket keeps bringing cubs home. He's a male bear, bears don't raise cubs in pairs (males don't participate at ALL), but he's a Ranger companion and lives as long as Vex does. And given he's a fit specimen he's probably the sire of a lot of cubs in the area (Vex and the Grey Hunt have got to watch out for inbreeding effects KJTRNHRKN). So every now and then he'll find a hurt or abandoned or sick cub and bring it back, and Vex nurses it back to health (and Dan too), and suddenly they Have Another Bear. Oh Dear. Sometimes Vex and Trinket make a conscious effort to train the cubs to live in the wild and release them a ways away once they're old enough, but the three bears we see in C3 is Only The Beginning.

The first time Percy tried really growing a beard, Vesper made Unhappy Faces when he'd give her kisses and in a fit he shaved it all off. He needed some talking-tos about it. His baby girl was SO upset and it make HIM upset OKAY -

It's advised that guests do not wander the halls of Castle Whitestone alone at night. They assume, naturally, that this is due to Ghosts or Restless Spirits - no the de Rolos are just. like that. Cass would rather everyone avoid the trauma of hearing them having a good time. Also the kids' darkvision means they have shining pupils if light hits them in the dark and someone fell down the stairs once so there's that too.

Percy fucking agonizes over blue now. Getting a gift to match Vex's feather takes up at least 3-12 hours of a given project. At this point he has custom paints mixed for it and will scour stalls and shops for gems of the right turquoise.

He also owns way more fur than he'd expect, because Vex is a ranger and can at least make a decent muffler or trim for mittens or ruff for his winter coat out of some of her more impressive catches. His favorite, though, is a tiny fur thing that's badly worn. Vex insists it's a bird. *it does not look like a bird,* it looks like a pointed rock with two bead eyes. It was the first thing she tried making him and it, well, it didn't come out as she'd expected. He still stims with it often, it practically lives in his pocket - like she was in Pandemonium, when VM were transformed into birds. She says she hates it, but his earnest adoration for this little silly thing she made really makes Vex so damn happy.

YOUR MUSIC TASTES FOR THEM ARE SO IN LINE WITH WHAT'S IN MY HEAD NGKJRNGK. vex imo has the most chaotic playlists because there's just one for all of her music. it switches from lizzo to mumford & sons without rhyme nor reason. and they WOULD be taylor swift stans with pike i LOVE THIS. AND GOD,, THE MENTAL IMAGE OF HER AND PERCY DRAMATICALLY LIP-SYNCING LIKE HUGE NERDS..... MY CROPS ARE WATERED. MY SKIN IS CLEAR

THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING NGKJRNKJGNR i simply think vex deserves an entire legion of bears who love her, and many of them on the castle grounds. only the best for the grand mistress of bears. (trinket mimicking vex's adopting behavior is SO CUTE I'M GONNA CRY)

2024 FRC - February🖤

Hello Friends! Happy March! It's my favourite month of the year and things are going to be BUSY at my house - so I'm not sure if that means more fic reading or less. We shall see.

Things in the @fanfic-reading-challenge are progressing nicely. If you’re looking for a fun way to get out of your comfort zone, you should come check it out.

I decided to reread the entire collection of @ozmathegreatand's work. I'm about half-way now and it's been a delight. If you're looking for a fun Shakespeare themed fic full of hijinks and hilarity - you should check out Violent Delights (Wenvier - T 4/4). It features and absolutely obsessive Wednesday (she has a shrine!) and a pining but oblivious Xavier - and Romeo+Juliet. It's fun!

Alternately, you could check out the Hearts Wild series by KNSkns - an alternate view on what would have happened in Star Trek: Discovery if Ash Tyler had come to the future with the crew instead of staying back. Ash is my favourite character and I miss him. So this soothes my broken heart. It's Ashburn - 3 fics. Canon Divergent mid-S2.

Or if you wanted to stray into The Witcher fic - check out Missed Connections by @powerofadyingsun - a Modern AU that deals with royalty with a side of ptsd thrown in. SO good. It was my first Cahir/Cirilla fic but it won't be my last because it was wonderful and I was VERY emotional reading it.

And lastly - the folks over at @allthevmff have been doing an amazing job - because I read an abnormally large number of Veronica/Logan fics this month at their recommendation. A wonderful story that I'd never read before was Inevitable by snuffybaby (LoVe - 5/5) - set pre-series. What would have happened if there had been a witness to Lilly's murder? Well this story tells you and it's super super good. If you're hankering for a VM fic - give this one a try.

I think modern AU Vax would usually have a fair number of tattoos, whereas Vex would take a while before getting anything permanent. Vax is very much someone to throw all he has into what he loves, including a great design or a moment he wants to remember. Vex, though... Vex holds onto that hope that she could be enough for their father for longer, trying to be appropriate and pretty. Maybe she gets something small and easily hidden at first, but any visible tats would likely wait until after she’s been with VM for some time. (But she can also be impulsive af, so I wouldn't put it past her to have small matching tats with Vax, and maybe Percy)

I touched on this in Cat's Cradle, but!! I like the idea of Simon being a corn snake in modern AUs, 90% because I have a huge corn snake bias. They're the perfect size and great beginner snakes and so chill Vax probably COULD wear him as a belt (jokingly, with support and under careful supervision). Snakes are perfectly good pets and wonderful animals and I hate to see them brushed aside in contexts where they work (ex: modern AU). Color-wise he'd likely be a snow morph of somesort, which in my limited experience can be fussy eaters and very skittish due to bad eyesight. Vax's sun-warmed black clothes would be the perfect hiding spot <3 I think he'd be very hesitant bringing up that he owns a snake to Keyleth, given how people react to these animals (especially when they realize how you feed them), but Kiki is absolutely delighted and can ramble on about their ecology and some morphs she heard about and eagerly asks if she can watch next time he's fed. (Vex thinks this is the weirdest date she's ever heard of)

I personally HC the twins as Métis in modern AUs. As a result, the migratory bird act does not apply to them. As Vex gleefully points out if anyone gives her shit for the feathers she wears. Silly HC: at one point VM get word that Kiki might get in trouble for some bits and bobs she has, including feathers and hippie-ish things, so her entire collection gets moved to the twins' place and ends up being the first step of her moving in with Vax.

when I lived in an apartment by myself during the loneliest time of my life, sometimes my downstairs neighbor would play the piano or the cello and when I was extra sad or homesick, I would lay on the floor with my ear pressed to the wood and listen to the music and it made me feel a little less alone.

If you like found family and Percy angst modern aus, I’d recommend this fic. Percy goes on a road trip to find his sister and Vox Machina tag along. I quite like the tone and feel of this fic so far as a modern au, and I like the description of VM breaking down Percy’s walls through friendship. It doesn’t seem to have lots of ppls reading it? Canon pairings tagged, only three chapters in so far.
