The Kids Want Communism | Part 3 -- And the re-opening of the Ben Ari Museum

Opening of the third and final installment and the re-opening of the Ben Ari Museum after its renovation is Thursday 22 June, 8pm!

"The Kids Want Communism” is a yearlong exhibitions project at MoBY-Museums of Bat Yam that is held in conjunction with a number of different artists and institutions around the world, including exhibitions, lectures, exhibits, screenings, and publications throughout the year of 2016-2017. Partner institutions include the Tranzit Prague, VCRC Kiev, Free / Slow University of Warsaw, State of Concept in Athens, Škuc Gallery in Ljubljana, Westspace in Melbourne, and MoBY. As part of the third round of “The Kids Want Communism”, the entrance exhibits the paintings by the artist Toy Boy, who was born in Luanda, and grew up as a street kid in Angola after the Cuban war against South Africa and the United States. The unique story of this unknown war, which led to the fall of the Apartheid, is being told through the artist’s experiences. 

Beside him, is the installation of Hila Laviv and Dana Yoeli, ‘In the Corner This Morning’, an installation poster inspired by the utopian rooms designed by the Soviet artist El Lissitzky (1890-1941). The visitors are invited to take with them a poster with a paper self-preparation model and are encouraged to touch, cut, fold, paint, and decorate in handicrafts tradition of DIY (Do it Yourself). In this way the painting becomes an object.

On the second floor, the large-scale installation of Max Epstein “Dacha", which was created especially for the exhibition, restores not only the traditional Russian wooden summer house, but also provides the uncanny features it involved. Tamar Nissim presents "I am Simha Sabari", which tells the fascinating story of Sabari (1913-2004).

Mati Lahat exhibits “Titans", an installation created especially for the exhibition and composed of original frescoes created by Shraga Weil and Shmuel Katz in the communal dining hall of Kibbutz Ein Hamefratz in 1954. Lahat rescued the frescoes before the dining hall wall was destroyed. At MoBY he presents them against graphite drawings of the Liquidators monument in the Ukraine. These volunteers sacrificed their lives to seal the nuclear reactor at Chernobyl with concrete in 1986 in order to prevent further leakage of radioactive radiation.

Tal Gafny's installation "Atidim" was also created especially for the exhibition. In its center is the image of Alyssa Carson, an American girl who has been practicing for the last nine years in order to participate in the first manned expedition to Mars planned by NASA for 2033. The work represents a summary of the first chapter of the project which will accompany Alyssa on her departure to Mars in 17 years. "Structure for Rest," a formation of beds for daydreaming by Ohad Meromi, is moving in the second floor to construct new constellations between the exhibits. In addition, the mural by Jonathan Gold showing people standing in line has been completed during the year and is now presented in its final form. The exhibition "Notes on Division,” curated by iLiana Fokianaki of State of Concept in Athens, one of the international partners of "The Kids Want Communism" activities, focuses on a return to the Greek civil war of 1946-1949 and the political discourse surrounding the current economic crisis in the country. The exhibition will host six major artists from the art scene in Athens, including: Konstantinos Kotsis, Yota Ioannidou, Antonis Pittas, Yorgos Sapountzis, and Vangelis Vlahos.

“The Kids Want Communism” is an annual exhibitions project at MoBY-Museums of Bat Yam, and is held in conjunction with a number of different artists and institutions around the world throughout 2016. Vendredi 22 Septembre 2017 – Santee Alley, Downtown LA, Hollywood Boulevard, Walk of Fame, Beverly Hills, Rodeo Drive… Voyage dans le ventre de la bête !

Partie 01/04 : Santee Alley & le Fashion District : J’irai looter à Mexico.

Missionné par mon compère Loïc de lui trouver un maillot pas cher de Shaquille O’Neal aux couleurs des Lakers, il m’a été recommandé par Eleshwa d’aller fouiner dans les magasins de Santee Alley, qu’elle m’a décrit comme un quartier organisé comme un gigantesque marché du dimanche.

Heureux d’avoir retrouvé mon véhicule présent et intact, je me mets en route en fin de matinée sous un beau ciel bleu baigné d’une température agréable, la fleur au fusil.

 La route vers le Fashion Discrit passe par le quartier voisin du centre-ville, où je navigue sans encombre entre les buildings d’affaires. Je m’attendais à y trouver un cœur de fourmilière battant de foule, mais force est de constater que ce centre-ville n’échappe pas au sort des quartiers d’affaires : on y trouve essentiellement des bureaux, et donc peu d’animation dans les rues (toute proportion gardées, car on est quand même à Los Angeles et pas à Coursegoules), où la circulation ne bouchonne pas.

 A l’orée gratte-ciels du centre se déploie donc une ceinture de quartier d’architecture plus basse, plus vieille, beaucoup plus modeste, et faisant part belle aux vieux bâtiments industriels. Toujours soucieux de ne pas me faire racketer quand vient le moment du parking payant, je me paye trois tours de quartier autour de Santee Alley, à l’affût d’une place devant un parcmètre, pour éviter les parkings privés et leurs prix que j’imagine prohibitifs. Par deux fois je croise des mecs en gilets jaunes faire de grands signes en ma direction, et pointer dans une direction. Je ralentis une première fois pensant qu’il y a un problème, avant de comprendre qu’il s’agit juste de rabatteurs cherchant à guider les gens vers leurs parkings privés (dont les prix ne sont finalement pas si délirant, bien moins chers qu’à Nice en tout cas). Mes efforts payent puisque je trouve finalement une place en bord de route au 253 Olympic Boulevard, à l’ombre d’un des très rares arbres du quartier.

Et me voici donc en plein cœur du « Fashion district » ; plongeon dans l’ambiance unique d’un quartier populaire comme il n’en existe aucun autre.

Engagé dans ses ruelles, je réalise rapidement que ce district n’a de « Fashion » qu’un titre honoraire. A mi-chemin entre un souk marocain et le marché à ciel ouvert de St Laurent du Var, le quartier est construit comme un quadrillage de rues, ruelles, allées et contre-allées toutes bordées de petites échoppes, dont 95% peuvent être répartis dans ces catégories : - Parfums/maquillage/produits capillaires bon marché - Magasin de jouets contrefaits bon marché - Magasins de fringues bon marché - Magasins de maillots de foot contrefaits/bon marché - Magasins de chaussure et de casquettes - Magasin de gadgets/accessoires bon marché… De ce labyrinthe s’élèvent quelques vieux hauts bâtiments aux vieilles vitres poussiéreuses, probablement d’anciennes usines.

Pour la restauration, tout (ou presque tout) se passe dans des camions de hot-dogs garés en bord de route, qui parfument l’air ambiant de leur vapeurs d’épices et d’oignons fris. Cette épaisse fragrance très particulière, mélangé aux senteurs des parfums pas chers, me surprend dès mes premiers pas dans le quartier, m’extirpant d’abord une grimace, avant de doucement se faire oublier. A 95% hispanique la foule nombreuse s’affaire, les mamas occupées à comparer la qualité des robes et tshirts, pendant que les gamins lorgnent sur les jouets en plastique ou une console de jeu contrefaite qui fait tourner en continu la démo d’un Mario Bros piraté sur un écran cathodique. Chaque petit magasin est une copie presque conforme du précédent, et on retrouve les mêmes produits en devanture tous les 50m : je m’étonne que tant de boutiques indépendantes puissent ici vivre, tant la concurrence est nombreuse. Mais les prix étant les mêmes partout, et la clientèle abondante (même en ce vendredi midi. Je n’ose pas imaginer la cohue pendant le weekend), tout n’est finalement qu’une question de proximité.

Vrai gringo dans une foule à 95% hispanique, je me régale de me retrouver un peu dans cette ruche populaire urbaine, qui ravive des sensations familières de promenades dans les ruelles de Cagnes sur Mer avec ma mère et ma gran-mère.

Malgré l’opulence de produits pas chers, impossible de mettre la main sur un seul maillot de basket. Chaque pâté de maison dispose d’au moins un magasin dédié aux maillots de football (incroyable), et je réalise l’ampleur de l’adoration du peuple mexicain pour le football. C’est dans un discret magasin, dédié aux fringues de sport marqués de l’identité « L.A » que j’aperçois, sur le portant le plus haut du magasin très haut sous plafond, le maillot de Shaquille O’Neal tant convoité. Le gros bonhomme me le décroche avec sa perche, et passe la chasuble, beaucoup trop grand pour moi. Il fait chaud dans la boutique, mais une bouffée de chaleur finit de m’estouffer quand le vendeur m’annonce le prix très coquet de 140$... Ouch. Un rapide coup d’œil aux étiquettes et à la qualité des coutures et je réalise qu’il s’agit d’un maillot authentique officiel, vendus à prix d’or par la Nba. Dans l’antichambre de la contrefaçon, le seul maillot disponible sur une surface d’un hectare est un vrai. C’est à n’y rien comprendre. Et surtout, pourquoi cette absence de produits de basketball dans cette ville qui compte deux équipes NBA et qui vit au rythme des résultats des Lakers ? C’est à n’y rien comprendre, et je poursuis ma quête en m’enfonçant dans le centre nerveux du district : Santee Alley, la vraie, l’originale. Cette ruelle, en angle droit, se distingue de toutes les autres par son haut aux vitres jaunies. Je reconnais immédiatement l’endroit pour l’avoir visité en jeu vidéo. Finalement, je m’éloigne de l’agitation du Fashion District  et de son logo placardé sur les murs et les trottoirs, marchant en direction des rues plus lointaines où mon GPS me promet d’autres magasins de maillots sportifs, dont l’un d’entre eux vendrait des maillots de basket. Je marche, je marche, les trottoirs se font beaucoup moins fréquentés, et les petits magasins ont laissé place aux habitations, aux églises et surtout aux longs bâtiments spécialisés dans la vente en gros de textile, preuve que j’évolue bien dans la version californienne du Sentier.

Je trouve finalement le magasin indiqué par mon GPS, qui vend certes des maillots de basket, mais des chasubles vierges, en gros et pour les équipes sportives. J’ai trouvé un Casalsport mexicain, avec lui le constat que je ne trouverai pas mon bonheur dans ce quartier où j’ai beaucoup plus de chance de trouver un maillot de l’OM que de Kobe Bryant (véridique). La rue s’étend encore plus loin, et je reconnais à l’horizon les paysages des ghettos de Los Angeles se dessiner, avec leurs maisons en bric à brac et leur réseau éléctrique aérien bancale. Non merci, je n’irai pas plus loin ! Je repars donc vers mon véhicule, empruntant un raccourci dans une galerie commerciale (où je trouve encore et toujours les mêmes magasins et produits), dans laquelle je vais néanmoins un peu serrer les fesses car plus j’avance, plus sombre est le couloir, moins nombreux sont les échoppes ouvertes, et je me dis que le coin a tout du parfait petit spot de racket. Il n’en sera rien, et c’est bien vivant et avec toutes mes affaires que je retrouve mon jeep, avec une vingtaine de minutes encore dispos sur le parcmètre. J’en profite pour aller m’acheter un plateau repas chez Good Grill, le snack mexicain voisin. Pendant que je boulotte mes fajitas, je cherche un peu mieux sur le web pour trouver ces foutus maillots. Seul résultat tangible : la boutique officielle du Staples Center, le stade officiel des Lakers et des Clippers, un choix qui ne me convient que peu car je cherche un revendeur de maillots copiés, à bas prix et petite qualité, tels ceux qu’on trouvait si facilement sur le marché de Melbourne. Soudain je connecte mes deux neurones, et comprends que je suis sur le sol américain, là où le capitalisme et la Nba peuvent exprimer leur puissance et leur contrôle, et que par conséquent, il doit être facile pour eux de combattre l’industrie de la contrefaçon, particulièrement quand le GQ des Lakers se trouve à 5km d’où je suis. Un autre magasin m’est indiqué, du côté d’Hollywood, spécialisé dans les maillots vintage d’occasion.

Je prévois de m’y rendre en fin de journée, car pour l’instant je prévois de mettre le cap vers le Walk of Fame du quartier d’Hollywood, point d’orgue de toute visite touristique de Los Angeles qui se respecte.

Les premiers jours

Les premiers jours ont été un peu hors du temps et cela fait maintenant une semaine que nous avons atterri. Effectuer un voyage vers les fuseaux horaires de l'Est est toujours quelque peu épuisant car on va à l'inverse de son sommeil. Comprenez, c'est toujours plus facile de se coucher plus tard que plus tôt et du coup obligé de prendre des pilules pour faire dodo. Depuis deux jours nous ne subissons plus les affres du décalage horaire.

Nous sommes hébergés par mon ami Michael qui vit à Waterloo, un "suburbs" ou ville de banlieue qui se trouve à 20 min du centre ville par le train et 30 minutes par le bus. Nous préférons prendre le bus car il nous permet d'observer les paysages urbains et de nous imprégner un peu plus de la ville.

Waterloo est une ancienne zone industrielle où les usines ont laissé place à des immeubles de standing à l'architecture contemporaine. C'est l'une des zones les plus en vogue où les appartements se vendent à prix d'or et pourtant il ne s'y passe pas grand chose. (Matthieu reviendra plus longuement dans une section annexe sur l'organisation spatiale et historique de l'Australie). En attendant nous ce qu'on préfère c'est aller à Newtown et Marrickville qui sont des suburbs plutôt "punk" et "engagées" où on peut écouter des concerts, manger dans des restos sympa et rencontrer des australiens avec des looks rigolos.  

Lorsque nous sommes arrivés, Matthieu a également retrouvé son cousin Youssef qui travaille à Melbourne depuis 3 mois et qui était à Sydney pour y passer la semaine. Youssef bosse dans une start-up qui s'intéresse à la gestion de l'énergie, ce qui est plutôt d'actualité. Contrairement à ce que l'on pouvait imaginer, l'Australie n'est pas épargnée par l'inflation et l'augmentation des prix de l'énergie. Pour y remédier, Youssef est en Working Holiday Visa comme nous et sa société va lui proposer un "sponsorship" pour qu'il obtienne un statut de résident. On compte sur lui pour faire des économies d'énergie ! D'ailleurs n'oubliez pas d'éteindre votre box internet après avoir lu cet article.

Nous avons aussi l'occasion de retrouver Kelly que j'ai rencontré via Michael lorsqu'il vivait à Nantes en 2007. Elle participait au même programme d'échange linguistique et nous avons toujours gardé contact en se retrouvant lors de ses quelques venues en France.

C'est vraiment rassurant de pouvoir retrouver à l'autre bout du monde des personnes sur qui on peut compter. Cela multiplie également les occasions de découvrir des supers endroits et de rencontrer de nouveaux amis.

On se pose la question de rester à Sydney pour pouvoir profiter de la qualité de vie et de ville. Par contre, l'accès au logement c'est une autre paire de manche ici et comme partout le covid a fait exploser les prix des locations. Une chambre en colocation se négocie autour de 400$/semaine   soit 1050€ pour un mois, gloups. Il faut qu'on trouve un travail pour considérer cette piste.

On va conclure ce premier article par le bulletin météo. Le printemps met visiblement un peu de temps à arriver. Il y a d'énormes inondations au Nord et au Sud de la Nouvelle Galles du Sud qui ont dévasté des villes entières... Ils n'ont jamais vu ça et dans les territoires menacés par les soudaines montées des eaux, les populations tentent de construire des digues à la dernière minute.

En tout cas, l'air est humide, nos cheveux ne ressemblent plus à grand chose et on su comme des cochons dès que les températures augmentent un peu.
